ABSTRACT Evidence of triggered star formation at large spatial scales involving stellar clusters is scarce. We investigate a Galactic region (l = 130${_{.}^{\circ}}$0, b = 0${_{.}^{\circ}}$35) populated by several open stellar clusters that according to the last Gaia data release, are located at a distance of about 2.9 kpc. By analysing the interstellar medium (ISM) at infrared, centimeter, and millimeter wavelengths towards this group of clusters we discovered a shell of material of about 2° in size at the same distance. We suggest that the shell, mainly observed at 12 μm and in the H i emission at 21 cm, was generated by the action of massive stars belonging to clusters Berkeley 7 and UBC 414, which lie at its centre. Five clusters (MWSC0152, Czernik 6, Czernik 7, Berkeley 6, NGC 663, and NGC 654) lie at the border of this shell. From the comparison between the dynamical time of the discovered H i shell and the analysis of the ages of stellar populations in these clusters, we conclude that the expansion of the shell could have triggered in the past the formation of stars in some of them. We point out that in order to find physical evidence supporting a genetic connection between stellar clusters, it is necessary not only to study the individual clusters and their stellar populations, but also to investigate their surrounding ISM at a large spatial scale.

AbstractVery metal-poor (VMP) stars preserve chemical signatures of early generations of stars, and are crutial to understand the early nucleosynthesis and first stars. Millions of stellar spectra obtained by LAMOST provide an unprecedented chance to enlarge the currently limited VMP star sample. Since 2014, a joint project on searching for VMP stars has been conducted based on the LAMOST survey and Subaru follow-up observations. So far, the project has obtained chemical abundances for about 250 VMP stars and a number of chemically interesting objects, e.g., three ultra metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] ~ − 4.0, a dozen Li-rich VMP stars distributed in a wide range of evolutionary stages. Statistics of the large homogeneous sample of VMP stars will be of great interest and importance to probe the chemical enrichment in the early Galaxy and low-mass star evolution.

Relic galaxies are thought to be the progenitors of high-redshift red nuggets that for some reason missed the channels of size growth and evolved passively and undisturbed since the first star formation burst (at z > 2). These local ultracompact old galaxies are unique laboratories for studying the star formation processes at high redshift and thus the early stage of galaxy formation scenarios. Counterintuitively, theoretical and observational studies indicate that relics are more common in denser environments, where merging events predominate. To verify this scenario, we compared the number counts of a sample of ultracompact massive galaxies (UCMGS) selected within the third data release of the Kilo Degree Survey, that is, systems with sizes Re < 1.5 kpc and stellar masses M⋆ > 8 × 1010 M⊙, with the number counts of galaxies with the same masses but normal sizes in field and cluster environments. Based on their optical and near-infrared colors, these UCMGS are likely to be mainly old, and hence representative of the relic population. We find that both UCMGS and normal-size galaxies are more abundant in clusters and their relative fraction depends only mildly on the global environment, with denser environments penalizing the survival of relics. Hence, UCMGS (and likely relics overall) are not special because of the environment effect on their nurture, but rather they are just a product of the stochasticity of the merging processes regardless of the global environment in which they live.

AbstractObservations at high redshift reveal that a population of massive, quiescent galaxies (called red nuggets) already existed 10 Gyr ago. These objects undergo a significant size evolution over time, likely due to minor mergers. In this work we present an analysis of local massive compact galaxies to assess if their properties are consistent with what is expected for unevolved red nuggets (relic galaxies). Using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data from the MaNGA survey from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we characterized the kinematics and properties of stellar populations of massive compact galaxies, and find that these objects exhibit, on average, a higher rotational support than a control sample of average sized early-type galaxies. This is in agreement with a scenario in which these objects have a quiet accretion history, rendering them candidates for relic galaxies.

The distribution of black hole (BH) masses M• in galaxies is constrained by photometric and kinematic studies of individual galaxies, and by the properties of the quasar population. I review our understanding of these topics, present new results of adiabatic BH growth models for HST photometry of elliptical galaxies with brightness profiles of the ‘core’ type, and discuss the implications of ground-based stellar kinematical data. It is not yet possible to uniquely determine the BH mass distribution, but the available evidence is not inconsistent with a picture in which: (i) a majority of galaxies has BHs; (ii) there is a correlation (with large scatter) between M• and spheroid luminosity Lsph of the form M• ≈ 10−2Lsph (solar B-band units); and (iii) the BHs formed in a quasar phase through mass accretion with efficiency ε ≈ 0.05.

AbstractIn the local Universe there exists a rare population of compact galaxies resembling the high-redshift quiescent population in mass and size. It has been found that some of these objects have survived largely unchanged since their formation at high-z. They are called relic galaxies. With the goal of finding relic galaxies, we searched the SDSS-MaNGA DR15 release for massive compact galaxies. We find that massive compact galaxies are mostly composed of old, metal-rich and alpha enhanced stellar populations. In terms of kinematics, massive compact galaxies show ordered rotation in their velocity fields and σ* profiles rising towards the center. They are predominantly fast rotators and show increased rotational support when compared to a mass-matched control sample of average-sized early-type galaxies. These properties are consistent with these objects being relic galaxies. However, to confirm their relic status, we need to probe larger radii (⪎3Re) than probed with the current data.

This PhD Thesis is part of a long-term wide research project, carried out by the "Osservatorio Astronomico di Bologna (INAF-OABO)", that has as primary goal the comprehension and reconstruction of formation mechanism of galaxies and their evolution history. There is now substantial evidence, both from theoretical and observational point of view, in favor of the hypothesis that the halo of our Galaxy has been at least partially, built up by the progressive accretion of small fragments, similar in nature to the present day dwarf galaxies of the Local Group. In this context, the photometric and spectroscopic study of systems which populate the halo of our Galaxy (i.e. dwarf spheroidal galaxy, tidal streams, massive globular cluster, etc) permits to discover, not only the origin and behaviour of these systems, but also the structure of our Galactic halo, combined with its formation history. In fact, the study of the population of these objects and also of their chemical compositions, age, metallicities and velocity dispersion, permit us not only an improvement in the understanding of the mechanisms that govern the Galactic formation, but also a valid indirect test for cosmological model itself. Specifically, in this Thesis we provided a complete characterization of the tidal Stream of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy, that is the most striking example of the process of tidal disruption and accretion of a dwarf satellite in to our Galaxy. Using Red Clump stars, extracted from the catalogue of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we obtained an estimate of the distance, the depth along the line of sight and of the number density for each detected portion of the Stream (and more in general for each detected structure along our line of sight). Moreover comparing the relative number (i.e. the ratio) of Blue Horizontal Branch stars and Red Clump stars (the two features are tracers of different age/different metallicity populations) in the main body of the galaxy and in the Stream, in order to verify the presence of an age-metallicity gradient along the Stream. We also report the detection of a population of Red Clump stars probably associated with the recently discovered Bootes III stellar system. Finally, we also present the results of a survey of radial velocities over a wide region, extending from r ~ 10' out to r ~ 80' within the massive star cluster Omega Centauri. The survey was performed with FLAMES@VLT, to study the velocity dispersion profile in the outer regions of this stellar system. All the results presented in this Thesis, have already been published in refeered journals.

The thesis is concerned with the Hellenistic banquet and rider reliefs discovered within modern Greece, and examines their typology, iconography, and style, in order to trace the evolution of both themes and of individual motifs, in comparison with similar material from other Greek areas, and Macedonian areas now belonging outside the Greek borders. It aims to investigate the influence of sculpture of other Greek areas (predominantly Attic sculpture) on iconography and style, as well as to establish prototypes and local trends, and thus to place Macedonian funerary relief production within the broader frame of Greek relief production. It also aims to trace any relation between iconography and metaphysical beliefs of the Macedonians by exploring the cultural and religious background of the people, as attested by archaeological and literary evidence. Both themes are seen in the light of public beliefs in the Afterlife and within the context of the heroization and cult of the dead in the Hellenistic period. Both themes, as well as individual motifs, are interpreted on the basis of iconography, epigraphy and literature; it is argued that the funerary banquet represents the deceased as a hero in the Underworld, and that the theme of the rider represents the deceased both as a hero and as an important member of the society. The social status of individuals and groups who erected the reliefs is also investigated on the basis of iconography, epigraphy, and onomastics, with the aim of exploring the plausible factors which might have determined the choice of themes and particular motifs.

One of the global security challenges the United States faces is disaster coupled with political instability. The U.S. Military‘s ability to rapidly respond to disasters enhances regional and global security and stability. Foreign Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (FHA/DR), increasingly a mission that relies on a significant military component, focuses on the provision of goods and services such as health care, supplies necessary for survival, and infrastructure repair, with the goal of reducing the immediate human suffering. The disaster in this project‘s scenario is catastrophic flooding that occurs in one of Africa‘s most populated and wealthiest countries that threatens the stability and development of West Africa. This project, employing a systems engineering methodology, focuses on the 60 days after the disaster and the requirements to provide this assistance in the form of goods and services. Many system-of-systems architectures were developed to investigate the effectiveness of utilizing a Seabase for the primary delivery of aid. Two simulation tools, SimKit, and STELLA, were used to model and examine these architectures with the former addressing the delivery and throughput concerns while the latter focused on the satisfaction of the population and the limitation of criminal activity. Based on the results of modeling, the team provided recommendations relative to the most effective architectures in influencing the population of this coastal area as well as accomplishing the FHA/DR mission.

Le travail de cette these concerne la realisation d'un dispositif constitue de deux telescopes celestron de 20cm de diametre relies a une station de melange interferometrique par deux fibres optiques unimodales de 20 metres de long. Ce systeme comprend, de plus: un asservissement de la longueur optique des deux fibres incluant une stabilisation des chemins optiques vis-a-vis des fluctuations mecaniques et thermiques et une egalisation des caracteristiques de dispersion et de polarisation des guides optiques. Un asservissement de l'injection de la lumiere stellaire dans les fibres, un dispositif permettant de placer les entrees des fibres dans le meme plan d'onde, assurant ainsi la compensation des chemins optiques lors de la propagation des rayonnements dans l'air. Le dispositif a d'abord ete teste en laboratoire a partir d'une etoile artificielle, et l'on a pu obtenir des franges de contraste 64% en selectionnant une polarisation, la bande spectrale de la source s'etendant de 600nm a 900nm et la longueur de coherence etant de quelques micrometres. Ensuite le dispositif a ete transfere sur le toit de l'i. R. C. O. M. Afin d'effectuer des tests sur l'etoile polaire. La lumiere de polaris a ete injectee simultanement dans les deux fibres, le flux collecte correspondant a environ 150 photons durant les 10 ms de coherence de l'atmosphere. Mais faute de temps, les franges n'ont pas encore ete detectees

We aim to identify some of the first extremely metal-poor stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) based on photometric selection of red giants. The photometric data were from observations using the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope and MOSAIC-II imager, covering 5.4 square degrees of the LMC, extending from the central bar to a projected distance of 8 degrees. Candidates were identifed using Washington photometry, paired with a custom narrowband filter centred on the Calcium II H & K lines - in which metal-poor stars would exhibit greater flux. For the most likely metal-poor candidates, medium resolution spectra were obtained in the visible (R ≈ 1500), and the infrared (R ≈ 10000) using the 3.9m AAT telescope with the 2df + AAOmega instruments. The metallicity and radial velocities of these stars were derived from measurements of the near-infrared calcium triplet. Based on the candidate frequency, the photometric pre-selection proved successful, yielding 104 metal-poor candidates. Of these, 34 stars are previously unknown stars more metal-poor than [Fe/H] = -2:0, with our most metal-poor candidate having a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -2:93. This is the most metal-poor known object in the LMC. From these results, candidates for high-dispersion follow-up spectroscopy have been identifed.

The stellate ganglion blockade technique is used to treat complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). It is now well established that stellate blockades should be performed under imaging guidance. It has been suggested that alcohol may bring longer lasting relief in cases of severe intractable cancer-related pain arising from regional neoplasms invading the stellate ganglion, but frequent onset of Horner’s syndrome can outweigh the technique’s efficacy. Radiofrequency neurolysis (RFN) has become a common procedure in the management of chronic neuropathic pain. This chapter reviews indications of stellate ganglion procedures and describes the basic anatomical background, as knowledge of the anatomical surroundings of the stellate ganglion is a necessary prerequisite to a safe and successful procedure. Then it demonstrates how CT-guidance allows a step-by-step control of positioning the needle tip at target for either alcohol or radiofrequency thermal ablation, and discusses the results, advantages, and disadvantages of each approach.

The final example is the first quantum machine, which is barely macroscopic.

The pyramid complexes of kings Khufu, Khafra, and Menkaura of the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom period with their surrounding cemeteries at the Giza Necropolis contribute to our understanding of the development of a royal necropolis. Although there is evidence for pre-Fourth Dynasty settlement and burial, Khufu’s pyramid complex of the early Fourth Dynasty included a decorative program with reliefs and presumably statuary; while the decoration of the mastabas ranges from slab stelae and reserve heads to fully decorated chapels. Khafra’s and Menkaura’s pyramid complexes of the mid to late Fourth Dynasty probably focused more on statuary reflecting an evolving ideology of kingship. The quarrying of local limestone provided the necessary core blocks for the pyramids and mastabas, creating areas for the Sphinx and rock-cut tombs of the late Fourth Dynasty into the Fifth. The Heit el-Ghurab settlement (HeG), a center of production, and the tombs of the pyramid builders also contribute to our understanding of the necropolis’ functioning and its hierarchical structure. Giza continued to be used for burial through the Late Period.

The aim of this chapter is to ‘showcase’ two stellar (in more than one sense) modernist texts which met with relish the challenge presented by the pace of technological and literary change, and which remain to this day essentially uncategorizable: Wyndham Lewis’s ‘Enemy of the Stars’ (1914) and Mina Loy’s ‘Songs to Joannes’ (1915). These texts put a cosmological understanding of the universe as medium in dialectical tension with the generation of exclusive closed circuits and loops (an exclusiveness that might be thought to amount to madness). Lewis and Loy aimed not simply to represent, but to reproduce, the idea of communication as an adjustment of signal-to-noise ratio. The chapter concludes with a discussion of cryptographic modernism, and of the poems of Harriet Monroe.

Abstract As this chapter discusses, neurolytic blocks involve the destruction of afferent somatic or sympathetic nerves. This can be accomplished with a variety of methods, including radio-frequency ablation, cryoablation, and injection of alcohol, glycerol, or phenol. Choice of technique depends on the target and indications for the procedure. Diagnostic nerve blocks should precede most neurolytic blocks to ensure the correct target (and adequate relief of the patient’s pain) prior to neurolysis. Common neurolytic blocks include celiac plexus block, superior hypogastric plexus block, ganglion impar block, lumbar sympathetic block, and stellate ganglion block. Nonneurolytic blocks with local anesthetics can be performed not only for perioperative pain, but also in the setting of chronic or cancer pain. Generally, nonneurolytic blocks provide short-term relief, but can provide pain relief beyond the duration of the local anesthetic in chronic pain patients. Nonneurolytic blocks also allow for opportunities for physical therapy and strengthening and can help reduce opioid use in acute and chronic pain.

Abstract Chronic pain disorders present with different etiologies and consequently their signals are carried by different classifications of nerve fibers. Syndromes and disorders that present with sympathetically based pain are therefore treated differently than those with more musculoskeletal based etiologies. Autonomic nerve blockade primarily targeting sympathetic nerve ganglia can be used to provide significant pain relief in certain chronic pain disorders, most notably complex regional pain syndrome. Commonly targeted sympathetic ganglia include the stellate, celiac, and lumbar sympathetic chains. The purpose of this chapter is to provide recommendations on how to best perform these blocks as well as describe their indications, possible complications, and relevant surrounding anatomy.

Vishaps are large-scale prehistoric stelae decorated with animal reliefs, erected at secluded mountain locations of the South Caucasus. This paper focuses on the vishaps of modern Armenia and traces their history of re-use and manipulations, from the end of the third millennium BCE to the Middle Ages. Since their creation at an unknown point in time before 2100 BCE, vishaps functioned as symbolic anchors for the creation and transmission of religious and political messages: they were torn down, buried, re-worked, re-erected, transformed and used as a surface for graffiti. This complex sequence of re-contextualisations underscores the primacy of mountains as political arenas for the negotiation of religious and ritual meaning.

An Elymian identity given by Thucydides (6.2.3) illustrates well ethnic convergen- ces in classical Sicily. Refugees from Troy called themselves Elymians, founded Segesta and Eryx, and were later joined by some storm-driven Phokians. The Trojan ethnic component may reflect a Sicilian tradition at least as early as the late sixth century BCE (Stesichoros), strengthened through time, so that by the Roman period Segesta won tax relief on the basis of “kinship diplomacy.” Identifying what is Elymian about Segesta is challenging, and the main topic of two international congresses (Pisa 1997, 2000). The Sanctuary at Contrada Mango was partially excavated by Vincenzo Tusa in the 1950s, and yielded Archaic pottery with graffiti in Elymian, but written in the Greek epichoric alphabet of Megara Hyblaia: thus convergence began early. This article addresses convergences in religious architecture: the Unfinished Temple at Segesta (ca. 420 BCE), Segesta’s stellar attraction today, has been studied thoroughly by Dieter Mertens (1984). Not as well known is a Greek, Doric temple of similar size but earlier fifth-century date, in the sanctuary at Contrada Mango at Segesta. Pieces of its superstructure lie scattered on the ground. Whereas Mertens was able to docu- ment Athenian influence in the unfinished temple, other sources of influence, and original- ity, are evident in Contrada Mango’s earlier temple.

This contribution is focused on a translation of the first two chapters of Hanlongjing 撼龍經, one of the fengshui classical texts belonging to the School of Forms, attributed to Yang Yunsong and dating back to the 10th century. The first part of this short study tries to shed some light on some interesting features of this source: the notion of dragon qi 氣 veins shaping on large scale the topography of China, and defining on little scale the fengshui nature of a site; and the correspondence between mountainous reliefs forms and the stars of Ursa Maior’s Northern Dipper (Beidou 北斗).

During the last two years, we have developed and refined a novel approach to estimate phase distortion across an optical beam directly from focused images of starlight. The method, applicable to real-time atmospheric compensation of large telescopes using guide stars, relies on a nonlinear neural network processor to determine the phase from two distorted point spread functions, one at the exact focus of the telescope and one intentionally out of focus. Real-time phase retrieval is possible because the network is trained using simulated data to recognize and predict the near-field phase from the characteristic shapes and features of far-field images.

The territorial relations system between the fortifications of the inner Cilento. A proposal for study through GISThe landscape of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, south of Campania, is dotted with a wide variety of fortresses, castles, towers and all kinds of fortifications. The populations who settled there since the early Middle Ages have left traces of their presence through buildings that, from the initial purpose of independent defense of the individual settlement, have changed over time, especially in the Norman period, in a broader system and structured for the control of the territory. The diversity of the architecture that we still find today, determined by the different origins of the fortifications (sometimes Lombard, sometimes Norman, up to the coastal towers built in the Angevin-Aragonese period to defend against Saracen incursions), however, hides a complex system that connects these artifacts, creating a network that covers large portions of the territory. It is not easy today to recognize such relationships and rebuild this network that has in fact laid the foundations for the current layout of the Cilento landscape. The aim of the research is therefore to study, recognize and map this structure through the use of historical maps and direct relief. Starting from the portion of the territory related to the area of the Ancient Cilento, identified by the Monte della Stella Massif, we intend to start a mapping of the fortifications through GIS in order to provide the tools for the study of the geometries and territorial relations that were established between the different settlements, and how these were placed with respect to the surrounding territory. The use of the territorial information systems will also allow a systematic data collection that will open the way for a subsequent phase of survey and documentation of the artifacts scattered over the territory, through which it will be possible to create a typological abacus of the fortifications related to the different historical phases.
