The purpose of the current research was to investigate how parents? beliefs about children?s emotions are related to children?s outcomes. There were three specific aims of the current research: 1) assess the direct relationship between parents? beliefs about children?s emotions and children?s engagement during a problem solving discussion, 2) assess the direct relationships between parents? beliefs about children?s emotions and children?s security in the parent-child relationship and children?s perceptions of their parents emotional availability as well as the moderating effect of parents? stress on this relatinship, and 3) explore the moderating and mediating relationships between parents? beliefs about children?s emotions, children?s perceptions of the parent-child relationship, and children?s engagement behavior during a problem solving discussion with their parent. Participants were African American (n = 41), European American (n = 4), and Lumbee Native American (n = 38) parents and their 4th or 5th grade children. Contrary to hypotheses, parents? beliefs did not directly relate to children?s engagement or children?s perceptions of the parent-child relationship. Howerver, parents? stress in the last 24 hours moderated the relationship between parents? beliefs and children?s perceptions of their attachment security. The relationship between parents? beliefs that negative emotions are good and children?s engagement was moderated by children?s security in the parent-child relationship. In addition, parents? reported daily stress from the last 24 hours was related to children?s engagement during the problem solving discussion.

Introduction: Obesity has been recognized as a major public health problem worldwide that requires preventive action. Prevention is best targeted at children, there is lack of quantitative and qualitative research on obesity prevention in children and most have been conducted in western countries. The aim of this study is to describe the prevalence of obesity among 6-7 years old school children, investigate contributing factors and identify potential components for an intervention programme to prevent obesity amongst children in the State of Qatar. Methods The study consisted of two distinct parts: cross sectional survey and focus groups with a range of stakeholders. Results: Whilst there was a high prevalence of overweight and obesity 16%, underweight was also prevalent (21.7%). The results of the focus group discussions indicate that causes of childhood obesity are multifactorial, and a multi-sector approach to prevention would be acceptable. Some of the important barriers that need to be considered in developing interventions were highlighted. Conclusion: In Qatar there is coexistence of underweight and obesity in primary school children. Qualitative results suggest that a multi-sector approach to prevention would be acceptable toward dietary and physical activity, and suggested potential components for an intervention programme in preventing obesity amongst children in the State of Qatar.

With a trend to eradicate all forms of twelve-year-old labor outside of the home, both globally and locally, the perspectives of ten former employees of a Washington State agriculture business were studied. A study site was selected as an intrinsic case study due to the fact it adheres to state and national child labor policies, yet conflicts with global agreements on what constitutes acceptable child labor practices of twelve-year-old children. Semi-structured. face-to-face interviews, with ten young adults, between the ages of 18 - 25, who worked for the study site when they were 12-years-old, were conducted. Additionally, ten local community members were questioned about their views on the study site. Qualitative data analysis was then performed on transcribed interviews and notes to extract themes related to reasons, insights, and thoughts on their experiences or opinions regarding early work experience. The theoretical framework, consisting of the capabilities approach, was used to interpret the data and develop a discussion of the study's results and implications.

This case study demonstrated that the influence of obtaining a good work ethic and social engagement were primary motivations to start working at 12 years-of-age by the child's family and/or the child. Analysis of the semi-structured interviews revealed that work was not considered easy. Additionally, this study demonstrated that additional choices in the job market were desirable. Findings indicated that stakeholders (the participants, the participants' families and the participants' friends) and community members supported the study site's continued operation model. Results from this investigation may be used to support further research into the protectionist approach to light work practices.

This study aimed to examine the association between specific maternal characteristics (i.e., parents&rsquo
personality, depression, anxiety, affective state, and coping strategies) and childhood ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Conduct Disorder (CD) symptoms in children with and without the diagnosis of ADHD. Method: Data was obtained from 231 subjects including mothers of 77 children who were just diagnosed by Child Mental Health Departments of Hacettepe University or IMGE Child Mental Health Center and 154 children without any psychiatric diagnosis, who were receiving education from Nebahat Keskin Elementary School. Among 154 non-diagnosed subjects the ones who match best with the 77 ADHD group participants were chosen, considering ages of the children, income of the family, and education of the mother. Results and Discussion: (1) Psychometric Characteristics of the TBFI and CARSS were examined. The internal consistency coefficients of the TBFI varied from .51 (for Agreeableness) to .75 (for Neuroticism) and all subscales of CARSS had moderate to high degree of internal consistencies ranging from .65 (Conduct Disorder) to .92. (e.g., Attention Deficit). Additionally, concurrent validity of TBFI and criterion validity of CARSS were studied. Results revealed that TBFI had sufficient internal consistency and validity, and also revealed that CARSS was a highly reliable and valid measure, successfully differentiating the diagnosed group from the non-diagnosed group on each subscale. (2) Group differences on maternal characteristics were examined. Compared to non-diagnosed children, children with ADHD had mothers with higher Depression symptoms, higher Negative Affect, higher Neuroticism, lower Positive Affect. (3) Regression analyses, which were conducted separately for each group and the whole group, revealed that different maternal characteristics were associated with symptoms of diagnosed and non-diagnosed children. In general while symptom levels of children, who have ADHD diagnosis, was associated with higher maternal Negative and lower Positive Affect and higher Depression and Anxiety symptoms, and lower Extraversion scores
symptom level of Comparison children was associated more with Conscientiousness. These differences were explained by means of the fit between maternal characteristics and vulnerability, lower tolerance, lower adaptation, and compensation skills of children with ADHD (when compared to Comparison group). Results addressed the importance of maternal factors regarding its association with presence, and the severity of ADHD and comorbid symptoms of children.

This thesis examines the cognitive-psychological theory of autism, specifically the "theory of mind" account. According to this theory, autistic people lack the ability to attribute mental states to other people and this underlies their social communication difficulties. In the introductory chapters, autism is described, followed by a consideration of different theoretical accounts of the normal child's theory of mind and empirical evidence on the autistic child's theory of mind. Finally, the introduction discusses whether the different theoretical accounts can explain autism. A series of experiments are then described which investigated normal and autistic children's ability to understand knowledge as a mental state. Experiment 1 established a baseline for the subsequent experiments and included three groups of normal children with mean ages of four years nine months, five years nine months and six years nine months. In this experiment the children's ability to differentiate the cognitive mental terms "know" and "guess" with reference to their own and another person's mental states was examined. Results of this experiment indicated that all three groups of children could differentiate "know" and "guess" in reference to their own and another person's mental state. Experiments 2 and 3 compared the ability to differentiate "know" from "guess" with reference to their own and another persons mental state of high language level autistic children, low language level autistic children, children with Down's syndrome, four-year- old and five-year-old normal children. Results of these experiments showed that the high language level autistic children were able to refer to their and another person's mental state of knowledge. In addition the results were related to a number of measures of language ability. Experiment 4 compared the ability to attribute knowledge and ignorance to themselves and another person of high language level autistic children, low language level autistic children, four-year-old and five-year-old normal children. In one task the experimental question involved the mental term "know", in another task, the term "could help" was used. Results of this experiment showed that all four groups of children performed significantly better in the "know" task than in the "help" task. Performances on the tasks was again related to the children's language skills. The thesis reaches two main conclusions. First that autistic children do not totally lack a theory of mind, since high language level autistic children were able to refer to their and another person's knowledge state. Second, autistic children's language level is a strong predictor of their performance on theory of mind tasks. The thesis concludes by discussing a number of issues involved in autism research and indicating future directions for research.

Objective: Children and youth in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems or at risk of entering them are known to have high rates of mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. Many states are struggling with the provision of mental health services for these important populations, both providing timely and adequate access to services as well as providing evidence-based interventions to address their complex needs. The state of Tennessee developed a program of regional Centers of Excellence (COEs) based within pediatric tertiary centers that provide clinical and consultative services, and technical assistance to behavioral health providers and regional branches of the state child welfare agency. These are oriented to improve access, quality, and effectiveness of care. Methods: This manuscript briefly reviews the history and process of development for the Tennessee COEs for Children in State Custody. It also outlines their evolving clinical and consultative activities, and activities to develop services infrastructure on behalf of children in custody with complex behavioral health needs. Results: The COEs have provided a significant number of direct consultative and clinical services that have been formally evaluated as highly valuable by stakeholder agencies. They have also developed an infrastructure for training and dissemination of best practices and evidence-based interventions oriented to the special needs of children in state custody. Conclusions: The Tennessee COEs serve as a national model for the building and development of regional systems, both for children in state custody and for other children and youth with complex mental health needs.

This thesis provides a qualitative research of asylum seeking of unaccompanied children in Sweden. Children who find themselves traveling borders without company of a family member are in a very vulnerable position. In this thesis, the experience of unaccompanied children undergoing an asylum process in the Swedish jurisdiction is presented and the consequences of this process are also presented. With the creation of territorial boundaries embodied with an institution of state sovereignty, unaccompanied children finds themselves in a position of statelessness which produces a situation of rightlessness as they find themselves outside their own territories. This research suggests that, the territorial system provides great examples of unaccompanied children in a situation of statelessness even when they find themselves inside a new community. Even in this new state they do not automatically gain access to the community, instead through migration system, they must undergo investigations and procedures to prove that they have the rights to belong to that current community, a procedure that contributes to stress and other negative factors to the health of these children. From the findings of the interviews with unaccompanied children undergoing the process of seeking asylum and also unaccompanied children in hiding, it is seen that the asylum seeking process in the condition of unaccompanied children is characterized by the paradoxical system of national states, territorialism, totalitarianism, state sovereignty and an effort of maintaining human rights. The suggestion is that, the paradigm of territorialism and state sovereignty deprives unaccompanied children from what one in the Arendtian sense would call the right to have rights. As their journey to a new community starts off as a position of statelessness and with a 50% chance of returning back to that position. Their position slowly emerges from unaccompanied children, to a stateless adultescence and lastly to a forgotten undocumented adult.

This thesis investigates the rights of women under Islamic law, focusing on mothers and their children and comparing traditional Islamic law with the contemporary Lebanese legal system. The approach chosen here is to examine the laws pertaining to nasab (lineage). My analysis of the evolution in understanding nasab ultimately leads to a discussion on the denial of paternity, the li‘ān procedure, zinā (extralegal sexual intercourse), and so-called "crimes of honour," as well as an analysis of the modern notion of citizenship. The pre-modern jurists' understanding is then compared and contrasted with the post-colonial view as it has come to be represented in contemporary Lebanon. Ultimately, I aim to demonstrate that the flexibility with which pre-modern Islamic law was applied found itself seriously impaired by the advent of colonialism, French legal influence, and the subsequent rise of the nation-state – negatively affecting Lebanese women and their rights.
Ce mémoire a pour but d'explorer le droit des femmes sous la loi Islamique, plus précisément celui des mères et de leurs enfants. Par conséquent, le concept de nasab (filiation) sera traité. L'étude du concept de nasab entraîne une discussion sur des thèmes inter-reliés tel que le refus de la paternitée, la procédure de li‘ān, le zinā, les crimes motivés par l'honneur, ainsi que le droit à la naturalisation. Cette discussion sera suivie par une analyse comparative entre l'interprétation traditionnelle des lois relatives aux procédures mentionées ci-dessus, et la situation contemporaine au Liban. En somme, ce mémoire a pour but d'établir que la flexibilité dans l'application du droit Islamique a été sérieusement affectée par la colonisation et la naissance de l'état-nation; des changements qui ont engendré un sérieux déclin dans le domaine du droit de la femme. En effet, l'influence légale Française n'a pas – contrairement aux croyances populaires – amélioré la situation de la femme Libanaise, bien au contraire.

Introduction: In the last decade it has been proposed that individuals who are at an elevated future risk of developing psychosis compared to the general population can be identified using operationalised criteria. Those who fulfil these criteria are labelled as having an At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) for psychosis. Research in working-age adults has reported a lowering of the short-term rate of transition of such individuals to psychosis over successive cohorts. Nevertheless, such individuals report poor psychosocial functioning and high distress levels. To date, there has been a dearth of research specifically focussed on the concept of the ARMS in adolescents. Thus it is not established how these young people present to mental health services, what mental health diagnostic categories, if any, they would fulfil and what their short-term outcomes are in terms of mental health and psychosocial functioning. Moreover, it is unknown how this group may experience the label of being ‘at-risk’ and whether these individuals would benefit from the ARMS criteria being made an official diagnostic category. The aim of this study was to investigate how young people fulfilling the ARMS criteria present to services, to characterise them and report the short-term outcomes, in terms of mental health and functioning. The views and experiences of young people with the ARMS label and mental health professionals potentially working with this client group were also explored. Methods: Two separate projects were completed: Project 1; The Follow-up of the At-Risk Mental State (FARMS) project and Project 2; The Professional Attitudes towards the At-Risk Mental State (PAARMS) project. Study 1 of the FARMS project involved a prospective longitudinal cohort study and investigated how adolescents categorised as having an ARMS initially present to mental health services and fared over a six month follow-up period. Study 2 involved recruiting a purposive sample of participants fulfilling the ARMS criteria from Study 1, into a qualitative study. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework was then used to explore the personal understanding and experiences of these young people in relation to the ARMS concept. The PAARMS project used a mixed methods approach in order to evaluate the attitudes and experience of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) professionals in relation to the ARMS concept. Firstly, in-depth interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of six CAMHS clinicians who work in Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) services regarding their experience and attitudes in relation to working with young mental health service-users who have the ARMS label. Secondly, a survey involving 180 CAMHS clinicians was conducted. Results: Study 1 of the FARMS project confirmed that adolescents fulfilling the ARMS criteria present to services with significant levels of reported psychopathology and functional impairment. Auditory perceptual disturbance was the most frequently reported ‘positive’ symptom whilst 70% of participants met the threshold for at least one current ICD-10 Axis I psychiatric diagnosis. In terms of short term outcomes, transition rates to psychosis were low (1/29; 3%) with a handful of individuals (7/29; 24%) demonstrating significant remission of symptoms and/or significant improvements in psychosocial functioning. The findings from Study 2 indicate that young people wish to be told about their condition upon identification and do not report experiencing significantly negative or distressing instances of stigma, though this was a voiced initial concern. Talking to mental health professionals and possibly peers, who also experience similar symptoms, are perceived as the most beneficial elements of support offered by services. Finally, CAMHS professionals participating in the PAARMS project reported being reluctant to recommend medication as a first-line treatment strategy. However, monitoring, psycho-education and psychological therapies were widely endorsed. Identification and management of adolescents with the ARMS label was viewed as challenging and complicated by a variety of factors including maturational process and a lack of official guidelines and protocols. Discussion: The results of this study not only characterise how adolescents fulfilling the ARMS criteria present to services but also inform future debates regarding the ARMS concept as a distinct diagnosis. These findings should therefore facilitate the development of new policies for the identification and management of the condition in young people and address areas of clinical practice that require immediate attention. Future research is required to establish whether these initial findings are generalisable to services elsewhere and to evaluate plausible interventional approaches that target distressing symptoms and functioning.

The aim of this research was to investigate aspects of the spirituality of children in Victorian state primary schools. The researcher's experience as a teacher of Christian Religious Education (CRE) in Victorian state primary schools motivated her to investigate the spiritual experiences of contemporary children in this secular, and largely unexplored, context. The objective was to enhance the teaching of Christian Religious Education in these schools. The theoretical framework for this research was hermeneutic phenomenology, drawing on Gadamer's (1975) 'fusion of horizons', and Ricoeur's (1974, 1985) methods of textual interpretation and his concept of 'narrative identity'. A review of the literature of recent research into children's spirituality suggested to the researcher that children's spirituality can be expressed in four dimensions: 1) consciousness and 2) relationships, 3) identity and 4) roadmap, with an integrating central concept of worldview. This conceptualization became the basis for the research method. The research method consisted of three semi-structured interviews, two group interviews and one with individual children. These interviews were conducted in three Victorian state schools, with a total of 24 children aged eight to ten years (grades three and four). The group interviews explored the children's experiences relating to heightened consciousness (for example, awe and wonder) and their relationships with the Transcendent, other people and the natural world. The individual interviews explored the meaning-making dimensions of identity (self concept), and roadmap and worldview (values and aspirations). These interviews were video-taped, and transcribed. Profiles were prepared on each child based on Champagne's (2003) spiritual modes of being. There were four major findings of the research.;Firstly, the children demonstrated their capacity to 'reach out' with a heightened consciousness to explore their understanding of, and relationship with the natural world, the Transcendent, and other people (Hay & Nye, 2006). Secondly, the children demonstrated innate spiritual resources within themselves (Hart, 2003). The different environments in which the children were living seemed to have an impact of the development of their values, and their 'sense of meaning and connectedness' (Hyde, 2008). For most of the children the social context was non religious. This meant that the children used contemporary resources other than religion to express meaning and values. Finally, the children's sense of identity seemed to grow out of all these factors, as they tried to construct a meaningful 'story' of their lives (Ricoeur, 1985). These findings led the researcher to revise the initial conceptualization of children's spirituality to a more dynamic construction culminating in a sense of self identity and meaning. Based on this study the researcher recommends that the teaching of CRE in state schools attempts to enhance this sense of self-identity by providing the children with Biblical language and stories as vehicles for expressing their innate spiritual awareness through their own story. This may also encourage a meaningful relationship with Other. Furthermore, introduction to Christian values can both enhance the positive and critique the negative values of the society in which these children are developing their sense of self-worth and connectedness.

Introduction: Children with disabilities and other special needs present unique challenges for oral health professionals in the planning and execution of dental treatment. The oral health of children with special health care needs is influenced by various socio-demographic factors, including their living conditions and severity of the impairment. According to United States (US) Maternal and Child Health Bureau, special health care needs (SHCN) children are defined as “those who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally”. Aim and Objectives: The aim was to determine the oral health status of children with special needs. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of dental caries, periodontal disease and oral mucosal lesions among children with special needs in Khartoum State aged 5 to 15 years old attending educational and rehabilitation institutions. Methodology: A descriptive cross–sectional study was carried out. Data were collected with a data capture sheet that was a modified WHO Oral Health Assessment Clinical Oral Examination Guideline. Demographic variables, dmft, periodontal disease and oral mucosal lesions were recorded. Results: The mean dmft /DMFT scores was 2.02/1.25. The DMFT score increased with age, girls showed higher score than boys and autistic children had the poorest oral health among other disabilities. More than two third of the examined sextants were healthy, less than quarter had bleeding (18.3%) and 5% calculus accumulation. Fissured tongue was the most frequent oral lesion found. Conclusion: Children with special needs in Khartoum State demonstrated a high prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease and do not receive adequate dental care. There is an urgent need for both preventive and treatment programmes to improve the oral health of children with special needs.

In this study, I interviewed 57 low-income urban fathers about how they distribute resources between children, how they define responsible fatherhood and how they negotiate state surveillance. First, using queuing theory, I find that these fathers do not distribute their resources of time and money equally but instead give more of their resources to a smaller number of children in order to maximize their impact. I identify nine criteria that men use to prioritize among their children: timing of life course interruptions, distance, formal child support, desirability of the pregnancy, restraining orders, other resources available to the child, age of the child, gender of the child, and the child's reaching out behavior. Second, instead of financial provision or daily care, these men define a responsible father as someone who: acknowledges paternity to the child, mother, and his local community; spends sufficient time with the child to be at least a mentor or "Big Brother" figure; monitors the child's home; meets the child's basic financial needs before spending money on luxuries for himself; minimizes absences in the child's life; and voluntarily distances himself from the child when it is in the child's best interest. I analyze these findings in light of the common definition of responsible fatherhood and suggest several possible theoretical explanations to explain the divergence from this definition. Third, I find that low-income men experience surveillance through three state institutions: child support enforcement, the criminal justice system, and child protective services. They resisted this surveillance primarily by becoming invisible and dropping "off the radar." Men justified their resistance in five ways: they had their own material needs, they did not want the child, they did not want to separate from their child's mother, compliance was unnecessary, or they were incompetent to comply. I analyze these findings in light of Foucault's theory of state social control which contrasts state responses to leprosy and the plague.

This American Political Development research explains cross-state variation in aid for children at private religious schools in the United States up to the end of 2012. Using a mixed-methods approach I examine how the institutional orderings of Federalism, Constitution, Church and Party affect policymaker decisions to instigate and sustain programmes of aid. By ‘aid’ I mean education vouchers and tax credits, transportation, textbook loans, equipment, nursing and food services, and tax exemptions for private religious school property. I conduct Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis across all fifty states, supported by interview and archival research in six case-study states – California, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, New York and Utah – and by statistical treatment of the constitutional amendments known as ‘No-Aid Provisions’. All of the aid policies examined here are ‘submerged’ in Mettler’s terms, in that they help private organizations to take on state functions, re-frame such functions in terms of the marketplace, and are poorly understood by the public. In this thesis I extend Mettler’s conception of submergedness to explain when institutions matter, which institutions matter, and why they matter for religious school student aid. State decentralization is necessary for high levels of aid and a high proportion of Catholics is sufficient for high levels of aid. Republican control of the state offices is a necessary condition for the passage of tax credit or voucher scholarships but not for other types of aid. No-Aid Provisions are unrelated to aid. Of the four institutional explanatory conditions, Federalism and Church have the most important effects on aid for children at private religious schools. Party explains some types of aid but not all, and Constitution is surprisingly lacking in explanatory power.

Narrative coherence, or the measure of how well a particular memory has been structurally organized and interpreted, is receiving increased attention from memory researchers, likely due to its presumed links with effective coping and long-term remembering. The current study shed light on this important but elusive construct by exploring factors that influenced coherence in children?s personal memory narratives of events that occurred in both the recent and distant past. Specifically, 112 4- to 8-year-old children were asked to remember parent-nominated events that transpired within the past 4 months. One year later, when the children were 5- to 9-years-old, they were asked to remember both the previously discussed events that occurred over a year in the past and more recent events that occurred within the past 4 months. The research employed a recently devised standardized coding scheme to examine the chronology and theme dimensions of coherence in the children?s memory narratives. Cross-sectional analyses revealed that 8-year-olds produced memory narratives that were significantly higher in both the theme and chronology dimensions of coherence than 4- and 6-year-olds. Multilevel modeling of children?s recent memories indicated that verbal comprehension scores related positively to both theme and chronology, but only the theme dimension was affected by memory breadth. Further, a child?s current reporting ability was found to be a significant influence on the theme and chronology of children?s narratives of events that transpired over a year in the past, but these dimensions of coherence were no longer affected by the initial breadth of that memory. Overall, the influences on children?s narrative coherence differ both between the theme and chronology dimensions and between recent versus distant memories. Implications for memory research are discussed.

Current sociological research argues that children are social actors in their own right, and are capable of using race when explaining their social worlds. It is also argued that in order to examine how racial ideologies are produced and reproduced, we must look at day-to-day events as the arena where ideologies are learned and lived. In order to examine if children in the 21st century reproduce and perpetuate racist ideologies, I analyze 44 interviews with white and non-white middle school children from a small southeastern city. My results indicate that middle school children share racial stereotypes that reinforce racism. More importantly, in applying Eduardo Bonilla-Silvaâs conceptual framework of color-blind ideology, my findings suggest that although many of the respondents in this sample expressed equality rhetoric, their statements end up justifying racial inequality. The implications of color-blind ideology are discussed.

Studies of the effects of physical abuse on child adjustment have documented numerous adverse consequences on young children?s physical, cognitive, psychological, and social functioning. Given the overwhelming negative effects that maltreatment can have on a child?s life, it is remarkable that some victims prevail despite physical abuse. The present study was designed to investigate factors that predict individual differences in functioning of 78 children with substantiated histories of abuse. It was expected that parental warmth and socioeconomic status would significantly predict membership in ?resilience groups? (high, medium, and low). Children?s social adjustment was measured by teacher reports and peer interactions via direct observation. The Hollingshead Index of Social Status was used to measure SES. A Nurturing Parenting Style composite was used as an indication of parental warmth and was formulated based on a 30-minute interaction session between parents and their children. Separate ordinal logistic regression analyses were conducted to test hypotheses. Predictions were not supported. A discussion of study limitations and directions for future research is presented.

Background: Canadian Aboriginal children continue to be apprehended at a higher rate than non-Aboriginal children. Aboriginal mothers, who face significant social, political and economic disadvantage, are often under considerable scrutiny in relation to their parenting. Little is known about how the threat of child apprehension impacts the experiences of Aboriginal women accessing healthcare services. Therefore a study was undertaken to examine women’s perspectives on accessing health care when child apprehension is threatened. Methods: The study was guided by post-colonial feminist perspectives and followed the principles of exploratory, qualitative research design. Data collection and data analysis were carried out in two phases. Phase One involved a secondary analysis, using narrative interview data collected from a larger study (n=7). Phase One findings were used primarily to modify the interview guides developed for Phase Two. In Phase Two primary, face-to-face interviews were conducted with (i) Aboriginal women (N=9) and (ii) health care providers (n=8). Data was analyzed following the principles of thematic analysis and interpretive description. Findings: The findings indicated that women involved in the child protection system often experience complex socio-political and economic life challenges. The threat or fear of child apprehension did not impact the women’s decisions to seek medical services for their children; however the threat and fear impacted the women’s experiences with mainstream healthcare in a number of ways. Racism, prejudice, and discrimination within mainstream healthcare agencies along with the fear of child apprehension influenced the women’s decisions to access healthcare for themselves and impacted the women’s interactions with mainstream health care providers. In particular, women avoided engaging with health care providers when their children were hospitalized in part to protect themselves from judgment and discrimination. Discussion: Ongoing racism, judgment and discrimination toward Aboriginal mothers in mainstream healthcare agencies must be addressed. Health care providers working with Aboriginal people require education around culturally safe approaches to care and the history of colonialism and its effects on the health and well-being of Aboriginal people. Structural inequities such as poverty and discrimination must also be addressed through policy initiatives that attend to the social determinants of health.

This study examined whether cultural factors could predict parents' attitudes toward the use of harsh physical punishment on their children in Akwa Ibom state in Nigeria. Presuming that most people disapprove of child abuse, different cultural groups may define the parental behaviors that constitute abuse differently, and such variances may result in a disparity of identification of parents from some cultures as more abusive than others. Four different independent cultural variables were measured: (a) conflict tactics, (b) nurturance, (c) drinking, and (d) valuing children. Form P, Part E of Dimension of Disciplinary Inventory (DDI) was used to measure parents' perception of physical punishment. Part C of Form P of DDI was used to measure Conflict tactics. Nurturance scale was used to measure the warmth patents display toward their children. Valuing Scale was used to measure the amount of value parents place on their children, while Heavy Drinking Scale measured parents' frequency of drinking. Random sampling approach was used to select 269 parents' who were administered the questionnaires. A multiple linear regression analysis was applied to examine the contributions of the independent variables with the dependent variable of parents' attitudes toward physical punishment of children The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that all 4 cultural variables predicted parental attitudes toward physical punishment. Results will provide greater understanding of the Nigerian attitudes toward physical punishment of children, and thus offer a foundation for future public education with the goal of reducing the use of physical punishment at the individual and community levels.
