Let $\mathscr{N}_1$ (resp. $\mathscr{N}_2$) be a nest, $A$ (resp. $B$) be the corresponding nest algebra, $A_0$ (resp. $B_0$) be the subalgebra of compact operators. We prove that the nests $\mathscr{N}_1, \mathscr{N}_2$ are isomorphic if and only if $A$ and $B$ are weakly-$*$ Morita equivalent if and only if $A_0$ and $ B_0$ are strongly Morita equivalent. We characterize the nest isomorphisms which implement stable isomorphism between the corresponding nest algebras.

AbstractInspired by Franks’ classification of irreducible shifts of finite type, we provide a short list of allowed moves on graphs that preserve the stable isomorphism class of the associated $C^*$-algebras. We show that if two graphs have stably isomorphic and simple unital algebras then we can use these moves to transform one into the other.

AbstractThe results herein form part of a larger project to characterize the classification properties of the class of submodels of a homogeneous stable diagram in terms of the solvability (in the sense of [1]) of the potential isomorphism problem for this class of submodels.We restrict ourselves to locally saturated submodels of the monster model , of some power π. We assume that in Gödel's constructive universe , π is a regular cardinal at least the successor of the first cardinal in which , is stable.We show that the collection of pairs of submodels in as above which are potentially isomorphic with respect to certain cardinal-preserving extensions of is equiconstructible with 0#. As 0# is highly “transcendental” over , this provides a very strong statement to the effect that potential isomorphism for this class of models not only fails to be set-theoretically absolute, but is of high (indeed of the highest possible) complexity.The proof uses a novel method that does away with the need for a linear order on the skeleton.

AbstractUsing the Dadarlat isomorphism, we give a characterization for the Kasparov product of C*-algebra extensions. A certain relation between KK(A;𝓠(B)) and KK(A;𝓠(KB)) is also considered when B is not stable, and it is proved that KK(A;𝓠(B)) and KK(A;𝓠(KB)) are not isomorphic in general.

La classificazione dei materiali sulla base delle fasi topologiche della materia porta allo studio di particolari fibrati vettoriali sul d-toro con alcune strutture aggiuntive. Solitamente, tale classificazione si fonda sulla nozione di isomorfismo tra fibrati vettoriali; tuttavia, quando il sistema soddisfa alcune assunzioni e ha dimensione abbastanza elevata, alcuni autori ritengono invece sufficiente utilizzare come relazione d’equivalenza quella meno fine di isomorfismo “stabile”. Scopo di questa tesi è fissare le condizioni per le quali la relazione di isomorfismo “stabile” può sostituire quella di isomorfismo senza generare inesattezze. Ciò nei particolari casi in cui il sistema fisico quantistico studiato non ha simmetrie oppure è dotato della simmetria discreta di inversione temporale.

Dans cette thèse on s'intéresse au temps local d'auto-intersections de marches aléatoires. Cette quantité est définie comme la norme-$p$ à la puissance $p$ du temps local de la marche. Elle regarde dans quelle mesure la trajectoire de la marche aléatoire s'intersecte. Le temps local d'auto-intersections est lié à différents modèles physiques comme les modèles de polymères ou les problèmes d'écoulements de flux en milieux stratifiés mais aussi au modèle mathématiques des marches aléatoires en paysages aléatoires. Nous nous sommes pour notre part intéressés en particulier aux grandes déviations du temps local d'auto-intersections, c'est à dire que nous regardons la probabilité que la quantité d'intersections de la marche aléatoire soit plus grande que sa moyenne. Cette question qui a été très étudiée au cours des années 2000 fait apparaitre trois cas distincts, le cas sous-critique, le cas critique et le cas sur-critique. Nous améliorons la connaissance sur cette question au travers de deux résultats complets et d'un résultat partiel. D'abord nous prouvons un principe de grandes déviations dans les cas critique et sur-critique des marches $\alpha$-stables, puis nous améliorons les échelles de déviations au cas sous-critique tout entier de la marche simple, enfin nous sommes en train d'étendre ce dernier résultat aux marches $\alpha$-stables. Par ailleurs les trois preuves sont basées sur l'utilisation d'une version due à Eisenbaum d'un théorème d'isomorphisme de Dynkin. Cette méthode d'abord introduite par Castell dans le cas critique est donc ici étendue aux autres cas. Nous avons donc réussi à unifier les différentes méthodes de preuves au travers ce théorème d'isomorphisme.

We introduce the cup product bundle gerbe, and show it is stably isomorphic to the pullback of the basic bundle gerbe by the Weyl map. This result enriches our understanding of the basic bundle gerbe, which has numerous applications in physics.

Chapter 8 proceeds from the image of a sovereign state as a flat, two-dimensional surface and re-envisions the process of collective self-government as unfolding three-dimensionally, as a dynamic configuration of tendential responsiveness within the spacetime of a purposive constitutional order—a constitutional isomorph. In allowing us to move beyond constitutional self-government its aim is to dignify the plurality of constituent imaginations, deflate the claims of ethical and practical superiority of the liberal-democratic vision of popular self-government, render the idea of a forward-looking, and concretely purposeful constitutional order more sensible, and challenge the alleged inescapability of imagining the subject of constitutional self-government narratively.

This chapter focuses on the use of languages by Europe’s nation-states in the twentieth century, particularly after 1989. The ethnolinguistically homogeneous nation-state became the norm of legitimate statehood in Europe. At the level of rhetoric, the Soviet Union was an exception, but it was replaced by ethnolinguistic national polities. The idea of the normative isomorphism (tight spatial and symbolic overlapping) of language, nation, and state still obtains in Europe, as exemplified by the parallel breakups of Yugoslavia and its Serbo-Croatian language, so that each successor state (with the exception of Kosovo) has its own national language. The widespread normative insistence that languages should make nations and polities, and nation-states should make languages, is limited to Europe and parts of Asia, prevented elsewhere by the imposition of colonial languages. Interestingly, should the European Union persist in its official polyglotism, the normative thrust of ethnolinguistic nationalism may be blunted in the future.

After abelian varieties, K3 surfaces are the second most interesting special class of varieties. These have a rich internal geometry and a highly interesting moduli theory. Paralleling the famous Torelli theorem, results from Mukai and Orlov show that two K3 surfaces have equivalent derived categories precisely when their cohomologies are isomorphic weighing two Hodge structures. Their techniques also give an almost complete description of the cohomological action of the group of autoequivalences of the derived category of a K3 surface. The basic definitions and fundamental facts from K3 surface theory are recalled. As moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces are crucial for the argument, a brief outline of their theory is presented.

The state social contract relationship between rulers and the ruled in civil society is fruitfully understood as a governing convention. This relationship is modeled with an indefinitely repeated Humean Sovereignty game, where subjects and their sovereign maintain a governing convention by respectively obeying and providing adequate government. The ruled and their rulers maintain an implicit contract that is self-enforcing rather than an explicit contract requiring third-party enforcement. This model is motivated by the Trust problem in game theory and dynamic programming models of employment search. The governing convention idea has roots in Hume’s discussions of government. The closely allied Leadership Selection problem has roots in Hobbes’ account of commonwealth by institution. Hobbes’ original analysis fails, but his general strategy of justifying government by identifying an isomorphism between an actual regime and the regime of hypothetical choice motivates justifying democratic government via the salience of a democratic leadership convention.

This chapter considers how a discourse profile may provide a key piece of the puzzle for explaining the distribution of ergative grammatical structures within and across the world’s languages. The ergative discourse profile, isomorphic to the ergative-absolutive pattern of syntactic alignment, is found in a typologically diverse array of languages including ergative, accusative, and active. Speakers tend to follow soft constraints limiting the Quantity and Role of new and lexical noun phrases within the clause. Evidence for the universality of the ergative discourse profile is examined from typology, child language, and diachrony. A conflicting discourse pressure for topicality motivates accusativity, giving rise to competing motivations. As one recurrent resolution of competing demands, ergativity represents an evolutionarily stable strategy realized in grammar. While discourse-pragmatic and cognitive motivations contribute crucially to a functional explanation of ergativity, additional factors must include semantics of verbs, constructions, aspects, and splits; inherited morphosyntax; and more.

This study investigates determinants of socio-environmental practices, (mandatory and voluntary), as evidenced in southern Brazil’s electric energy distribution companies. It seeks to understand this phenomenon with interdisciplinary protection through theoretical constructs of Social Responsibility, Environmental Management, Evidence, Legitimacy, Reputation, and Institutional. This integration contributes to understanding the reasons why companies undertake and evidence their socio- -environmental practices to external audiences. The literature suggests that socio-environmental practices are explained by various reasons, such as: enforced by legal impositions and/or voluntariness, to strengthen legitimacy, maintain and develop a reputation, and by isomorphism of the competitive operating environment. Given the above, the objective of this work is to investigate factors that determine the disclosure of socio-environmental practices in electricity distribution companies in the south of Brazil. In the methodological aspects, a qualitative approach was used, with descriptive and exploratory objectives. As a research strategy, a multichannel study was applied through two electricity distribution companies in the south of the country, CELESC Distribuição S.A. (Centrais Elétricas de Santa Catarina) and COPEL Distribuição S.A. (Companhia Paranaense de Energia). Data collection took place in two stages, the first one with a search on documentary, physical and virtual basis, and the second stage using a semi-structured interview with professionals from the Social and Environmental Responsibility area of each of the companies surveyed. The information collected was related to the period of 2014, 2015, and 2016. The results showed that the Annual Reports, service stations, and participation in external events constitute the primary means and channels of evidence of socio-environmental practices. There was a greater tendency to develop social practices. However, there are programs focused on climate change, conscious consumption and electricity saving, social inclusion, recovery of citizenship, and people’s quality of life. The COPEL company presented a tendency to evidence voluntary practices with more intensity, also showing consistency and maintenance of the programs during the studied period. Regarding corporate and sustainability policies, it was noted that companies adopt very similar strategies. It is concluded that the age, size, and corporate reputation of companies are the main determinants of socio-environmental practices, highlighting the presence of mimetic isomorphism characterized by the use of the same types of means and channels of evidence and by the symmetry of practices and policies developed by companies CELESC and COPEL.

The structure of a given linguistic expression and the structure of the derivation that generates such an expression are two very different things; hence, they need not bear an isomorphic relationship. This chapter shows that the derivations of linguistic expressions are not recursive in the sense of computer science: there are no self-calls, and thus no deferred operations. Instead, the combination of merge, interface conditions, lexical items, and general computational properties brings about an iterative process, even if every stage of a derivation is recursively generated, keeping to the subtle distinction discussed in chapter 1 between recursively specified algorithms and the actual computational processes being executed at any particular point—in other words, a distinction between procedures and processes.

Over the past three hundred years there have been countless attempts by governments of all types to control fertility and reproduction. Currently, more than 170 countries representing over 85 percent of humanity are actively trying to engineer how many children a person will have. Democratic, authoritarian, religious, secular, Western, Eastern, and African states have all tried with little success to control individual fertility decisions. This presents a series of interesting puzzles. Why do governments want to control childbearing decisions? What are they trying to achieve? Moreover, almost all attempts to control fertility have failed. Policies rarely, if ever, achieve government objectives. Accordingly, why do policies so routinely fail? Why do governments of all shapes and sizes continue to create policies that have a robust record of failure? What accounts for such unusual cross-national trends in government attempts to instill a sexual duty to the state? This book fills the gap by analyzing the origins, growth, and development of fertility as a national and international political issue; the rise and fall of the discourses used to ascribe meaning to natality; and the global proliferation of isomorphic policies adopted by widely dissimilar states. It proposes an explanation for the widespread failure of hundreds of years of policy.

This book brings together scholars from multiple disciplines to explore how political and institutional context influences the governance of basic education in South Africa at national, provincial, and school levels. A specific goal is to contribute to the crucial, ongoing challenge of improving educational outcomes in South Africa. A broader goal is to illustrate the value of an approach to the analysis of public bureaucracies, and of participatory approaches to service provision which puts politics and institutions at centre stage. Stark differences between the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces offer something of a natural experiment for exploring the influence of context. The Eastern Cape’s socio-economic, political, and institutional legacy resulted in a low-level equilibrium trap in which incentives transmitted from the political to the bureaucratic levels reinforced factionalized loyalty within multiple patronage networks, and which is difficult to escape. The Western Cape, by contrast, enjoyed a more supportive environment for the operation of public bureaucracy. However, bureaucracy need not be destiny. The research also shows that strong hierarchy can result in ‘isomorphic mimicry’—a combination of formal compliance and a low-level equilibrium of mediocrity. Participatory school-level governance potentially can improve outcomes—as a complement to strong bureaucracies, or as a partial institutional substitute where bureaucracies are weak. Whether this potential is realized depends on the relative strength of developmentally oriented and predatory actors, with the outcomes not fore-ordained by local context, but contingent and cumulative—with individual agency by stakeholders playing a significant role.

Abstract This paper presents the application of modified standard codes in the systematic enumeration and graphical display of non-isomorphic mechanisms. A two-stage enumeration procedure is presented that involves the identification and generation of contracted graphs using modified standard codes. In this scheme, unique numbering reflecting the symmetry properties of the higher order links deduced from these contracted graphs is propagated to the second stage in which all the non-isomorphic kinematic chains corresponding to each contracted graph are enumerated. The integration of the resulting numerical code values with a robust automatic sketching algorithm provides the basis for the systematic enumeration and pictorial displays of basic kinematic chains. Illustrative examples from the enumeration of basic kinematic chains with up to 12 bar 3 degree of freedom system are presented, and the results are discussed.

Establishing School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) is one of the most widely adopted and widely studied interventions aimed at addressing the learning crisis faced in many developing countries: giving parents and communities a certain degree of control over aspects of school management is assumed to increase school accountability and contribute to improvements in learning. Examining the case of Nigeria, which in 2005 adopted a national policy to establish SBMCs in state schools, this paper reviews the evidence available on SBMCs’ ability to mobilise communities, and the potential for this increased community participation to translate into improved learning. The paper shows that while local community participation can help improve school performance, the donor and state supported SBMCs struggle to stay active and have positive impact on school performance. Yet for ministries of education in many developing countries establishing SBMCs remains a priority intervention among the many initiatives aimed at improving education quality. The paper thus asks what makes the establishment of SBMCs a priority intervention for the Nigerian government. By presenting an analysis of the SBMC-related policy documents in Nigeria, the paper demonstrates that an intervention aimed at involving local communities and developing bottom-up approaches to identifying and designing education policies is itself entirely a product of top-down policy making, envisioned, developed, and funded almost entirely by the international development community. The entire process is reflective of isomorphic mimicry—a process whereby organisations attempt to mimic good behaviour to gain legitimacy, instead of fixing real challenges. Adopting the policy to establish SBMCs, which is heavily promoted by the international development community and does not require actual reform of the underlying political-economy challenges hindering investment in education, enables education ministries to mimic commitment to education reforms and attain the endorsement of the international community without addressing the real challenges. Like all cases of isomorphic mimicry, such policy adoption and implementation has costs: national ministries, as well as state- and district-level education authorities, end up devoting time, resources, and energy to planning, designing, and implementing an intervention for which neither the need nor the evidence of success is established. Additionally, such top-down measures prevent state agencies from identifying local opportunities for delivering the same goals more effectively and perhaps at a lower cost. The paper illustrates this with the case of the state of Kano: there is a rich indigenous culture of supporting community schools, yet, rather than learning why local communities support certain kinds of school but not state schools, and trying to replicate the lessons in state schools, the SBMC model introduced is designed by development agencies at the national level and is administratively complicated and resource-intensive. The opportunity for local learning has not been realised; instead, both the agenda and the implementation framework have been entirely shaped by international aid agencies. The paper thus demonstrates how apparently positive policy interventions resulting from pressure exerted by the international community could be having unintended consequences, given the national-level political-economy dynamics.
