The accelerated growth of the population in recent years presents, as a great consequence, a significant increase in wastewater, which, on many occasions, is not discharged properly. This work aims to design a sewerage and wastewater treatment system in Las Mercedes commune in southern Ecuador based on geological, topographic, hydrological, geochemical and demographic parameters. All this focused on reducing pollution and complying with current national and international regulations, meeting the needs of the rural population studied. The methodology used consists of four phases: i) collection, inventory and processing of the base information ii) design of the sewerage system, ii) design of a wastewater treatment system and iv) environmental impact assessment and referential budget. The sewerage system consists of 3.2 km long PVC pipes that transport wastewater to a purification system of water pretreatment and facultative and maturation ponds. The designed system complies with a total purification of 636.27 MPN/100 ml of faecal coliforms (99.994%) and 35.30 mg/l of BOD5 (88%). The proposed design contributes to wastewater management and environmental education research, defining a combined model of a sewerage system with stabilisation ponds replicable in communities with similar conditions.

Telah diteliti kinetika fotodegradasi-UV pada PVC dengan penambahan aditif benzophenon. Film PVC dibuat dengan metode penguapan pelarut. Aditif benzophenon sebanyak 0,5% ditambahkan pada PVC. Film PVC difotodegradasi dengan sinar UV selama 30, 50, 70, 90, 110 jam. Tingkat degradasi ditentukan melalui pengukuran penurunan berat kering film, penurunan berat molekul, dan perubahan spektra UV dan IR. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penurunan berat kering PVC terfotodegradasi pada variasi waktu tertentu tanpa aditif adalah 4,91%, 6,20%, 7,97%, 9,29%, 10,07% dan dengan aditif benzophenon adalah 0,506%, 1,807%, 3,105%, 3,98%, 2,70%. Laju fotodegradasi PVC tanpa dan dengan aditif benzophenon masing-masing adalah 1,27 x 10-3 mg/jam dan 0,315 x 10-3 mg/jam, waktu paro fotodegradasi PVC tanpa aditif dan dengan aditif benzophenon masing-masing adalah 570 jam dan 2200 jam. Penurunan berat molekul PVC tanpa aditif dari 14080 menjadi 10882, 7400, 8870, 8044, 6360 dan dengan aditif benzophenon dari 14080 menjadi 13264, 12205, 12072, 11746, 11945 serta pola spektra UV dan IR yang berbeda. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa aditif benzophenon adalah inhibitor kinetika fotodegradasi-UV (stabilisator) terhadap PVC.

We put forward the concept of a novel particle stabiliser of oil–water emulsions, being the polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) formed between oppositely charged water-soluble polymers in cases where either polymer alone is incapable of stabilising an emulsion. Using poly(4-styrene sulfonate) sodium salt, PSSNa and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC, of low polydispersity and similar molecular mass, we correlate the behaviour of their mixtures in water with that of emulsions after addition of oil. In aqueous mixtures, spherical particles of diameters between 100 and 150 nm are formed through electrostatic interactions between charged polymer chains. Around equal mole fractions of the two polymers, the zeta potential of the particles reverses in sign and emulsions of oil-in-water (o/w) for a range of oils can be prepared which are the most stable to coalescence and creaming. The effects of PEC concentration and the oil : water ratio have been examined. All emulsions are o/w and stability is achieved by close-packed particle layers at drop interfaces and particle aggregation in the continuous phase. Increasing the salt concentration initially causes destabilisation of the aqueous particle dispersion due to particle aggregation followed by dissolution of particles at high concentrations; the corresponding emulsions change from being stable to completely unstable and are then re-stabilised due to adsorption of uncharged individual polymer molecules.

In economic literature, agricultural policy instruments for market and price stabilisation are classified in two broad categories: direct instruments and indirect instruments. Having the direct instruments failed, the cap proposals for years 2014-2020 are focusing on the indirect instruments: producer organisations, collective bargaining, interbranch agreements, transparency of the food supply chain, market risk management. Such themes emerged in the recent debate on agricultural policy because of two facts: strong volatility of agricultural prices and a growing disparity between basic prices and consumer prices. Objective of the present work is the evaluation of eight instruments of agricultural policy for improving the food supply chain functioning, with an analysis of potential economical consequences of the various options. The evaluation takes into account both efficiency (expenditure level, simplicity of use of the instruments, compatibility with Wto rules) and effectiveness (market and prices stabilisation, strengthening of producers position in the food supply chain, market transparency). Analysis was conduct referring to economic literature, to empirical evidences coming from sectors that use indirect instruments, and to results of studies produced by public or private organisations.

(2013) argue that an afforestation of 0.73 × 109 ha with Jatropha curcas plants would generate an additional terrestrial carbon sink of 4.3 PgC yr−1, enough to stabilise the atmospheric mixing ratio of carbon dioxide (CO2) at current levels. However, this is not consistent with the dynamics of the global carbon cycle. Using a well-established global carbon cycle model, the effect of adding such a hypothetical sink leads to a reduction of atmospheric CO2 levels in the year 2030 by 25 ppm compared to a reference scenario. However, the stabilisation of the atmospheric CO2 concentration requires a much larger additional sink or corresponding reduction of anthropogenic emissions.

We present a design methodology for hybrid lasers to realise mode-hop free operation by controlling the cavity mode spacing. In this study, a compact hybrid photonic crystal laser (H-PhCL) was employed which allowed a reduction of the Fabry–Perot length of the laser cavity and eliminated the need for an active mode stabilisation mechanism in order to realise mode-hop free operation. The H-PhCL was formed by butt-coupling a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with a two-dimensional silicon (Si) photonic crystal (PhC) cavity. Continuous stable single frequency operation with >40 dB side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of the laser was achieved for gain currents of up to 100 mA, i.e., up to four times the threshold current. The shorter length of the laser cavity enabled single frequency operation due to the selection of a single longitudinal mode by the PhC narrowband reflector. Various longitudinal mode spacing regimes were studied to explain the mode-hop free characteristics of the H-PhCL. The proposed hybrid laser design methodologies can be adapted to eliminate mode-hopping in laser wavelength.

Abstract In this work is analysing the impact of wood waste bottom ash (WWBA) on the physical mechanical properties of Portland cement concrete (PCC). WWBA is a waste generated in power plants during burning forest residues to produce energy and heat. In 2019, about 19,800 tons of WWBA was generated only in Lithuania. Usually, WWBA is disposed of in landfills, only 26% of WWBA is used in the construction or maintenance of local roads, because of that it is useful to know properties of such WWBA and to analyse possibilities of using it in cement concrete. In the chemical composition of such WWBA type was fixed a big amount ~50% of CO2. It is known, that C retards cement hydration. Due to stabilisation this process, it was used in the same amounts catalyst waste from oil cracking (FCCCw), which could accelerate hydration processes. Oil refineries worldwide generate more than 800,000 tonnes of FCCCw per year, of which around 20% in Europe and it is the big problem to landfill. In the investigation the amount of Portland cement (5-20% by mass) was replaced by mentioned wastes and properties of fresh PCC (density, slump, flow diameter) and physical mechanical properties of hardened PCC (water absorption, capillary water absorption, ultrasound pulse velocity, density, compressive strength after 28 days and 2 years curing, SEM) were established. It was determined, that by increasing amount of waste (till 20%) the workability of concrete decreases, because used wastes had higher water requirement. The best results were obtained, when 5% of cement was replaced by WWBA. Then compressive strength after 28 days curing comparing to control sample decreased 8%, but after 2 years curing it increased 1%, also the capillary water absorption decreased, denser structure was formed. The obtained results of hardened PCC density, ultrasound pulse velocity and water absorption are similar to control samples.

ObjectivesAssess the efficacy and safety of tocilizumab in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in a phase II study.MethodsPatients with SSc were treated for 48 weeks in an open-label extension phase of the faSScinate study with weekly 162 mg subcutaneous tocilizumab. Exploratory end points included modified Rodnan Skin Score (mRSS) and per cent predicted forced vital capacity (%pFVC) through week 96.ResultsOverall, 24/44 (55%) placebo-tocilizumab and 27/43 (63%) continuous-tocilizumab patients completed week 96. Observed mean (SD (95% CI)) change from baseline in mRSS was –3.1 (6.3 (–5.4 to –0.9)) for placebo and –5.6 (9.1 (–8.9 to–2.4)) for tocilizumab at week 48 and –9.4 (5.6 (–8.9 to –2.4)) for placebo-tocilizumab and –9.1 (8.7 (–12.5 to –5.6)) for continuous-tocilizumab at week 96. Of patients who completed week 96, any decline in %pFVC was observed for 10/24 (42% (95% CI 22% to 63%)) placebo-tocilizumab and 12/26 (46% (95% CI 27% to 67%)) continuous-tocilizumab patients in the open-label period; no patients had >10% absolute decline in %pFVC. Serious infection rates/100 patient-years (95% CI) were 10.9 (3.0 to 27.9) with placebo and 34.8 (18.0 to 60.8) with tocilizumab during the double-blind period by week 48 and 19.6 (7.2 to 42.7) with placebo-tocilizumab and 0.0 (0.0 to 12.2) with continuous-tocilizumab during the open-label period.ConclusionsSkin score improvement and FVC stabilisation in the double-blind period were observed in placebo-treated patients who transitioned to tocilizumab and were maintained in the open-label period. Novel targeted therapies have substantially improved the prognosis of patients with B cell malignancies. However, a substantial fraction of patients still relapse, even after initially achieving deep remissions. Many studies have characterized the interactions between tumor cells and their microenvironment as integral to leukemia/ lymphoma homeostasis and for the provision of survival signals, also contributing to drug resistance (referred to as environment-mediated drug resistance (EMDR)). Therapeutic efforts to antagonize microenvironment-emanating survival cues have predominantly focused on perturbation of tumour cell adhesion enabling the physical displacement from protective niches (e.g. BCR-inhibitors). In an effort to address whether direct stromal targeting could more precisely mitigate EMDR, we recently characterised the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor-stroma interactions in B cell malignancies and identified a protein kinase C-β (PKC-β) as an essential kinase, required for activation of NF-κB in mesenchymal stromal cells (Lutzny et al Cancer Cell 2013). The dependency on stroma PKC-β was uniformly found for acute (ALL) and chronic (CLL, MCL) B cell malignancies. Importantly, our data further demonstrate that targeting stroma PKC-β is of key importance for multi-drug resistance of malignant B cells and can be used for therapeutic interventions (Park et al Science Trans Med 2020). Here we demonstrate novel mechanistic insights into stroma-mediated drug resistance in B cell malignancies. We identified that stroma PKC-β drives a transcriptional program in tumor cells, dependent on the activation of TGF-β and BMP-signaling, which ultimately leads to the stabilisation of BCL-XL. Our data show that BCL-XL expression in tumor cells is associated with SMAD1-induction by cytotoxic therapies, which simultaneously suppress SMAD4 expression. Importantly, SMAD1 expression was strictly dependent on stromal PKC-β activity. Antagonizing stroma signals with TGF-β inhibitors inhibits SMAD1 induction, abrogates the up-regulation of BCL-XL and overcomes stroma-dependent resistance to Venetoclax and conventional chemotherapy. The TGF-β pathway operates in parallel to the activation of the transcription factor EB (TFEB) as a down-stream target of PKC-β. Interference with these signaling pathways impairs plasma membrane integrity of stromal cells by down-regulation of numerous adhesion and signaling molecules, such as ADAM17, required for the reciprocal stabilization of BCL-XL in tumor cells. The significance of microenvironment PKC-β for drug resistance was demonstrated in vivo, using C57B/6 mice, diseased with EμTCL-1 driven B cell tumors and treated with Venetoclax in combination with or without PKC-β inhibitors. Combined treatment significantly prolonged survival, based on PKC-β mediated impairment of EMDR. Similarly, concurrent treatment of PKC-β inhibitors with chemotherapy also improved survival in an ALL-PDx model Our data demonstrate that mitigating EMDR with small molecule inhibitors of PKC-β or TGF-β signalling enhance the effectiveness of both targeted and non-targeted chemotherapies and moreover, has the ability to overcome Venetoclax resistance in B cell malignancies. Vegetable production systems rely on frequent tillage to prepare beds and manage weeds, thereby accelerating losses of soil organic carbon (SOC). They are also characterised by scant crop residue input. Residue incorporation and organic fertiliser application could counteract SOC loss due to tillage. We tested this hypothesis in a Chromosol and a Vertosol in northern NSW, Australia, where the effects of incorporating sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. rugosa) residue in soil in a corn–cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) rotation under either organic or conventional system on soil C fractions were studied during two rotation cycles (2 years). A laboratory experiment was conducted to isolate the effect of tillage on the soil organic matter (SOM) fractions, because both the residue-incorporated and without-residue treatments for organic systems received tillage for weed control in the field, whereas conventional systems did not. Residue incorporation increased particulate OC (POC) by 32% in the field experiment and 48% in the laboratory experiment, whereas dissolved OC was increased only in the organic system. Concentrations of mineral-associated OC (MOC) and total OC (TOC) were increased by residue incorporation in both field and laboratory experiments. Simulated tillage had a limited effect on POC, MOC and TOC, suggesting that cultivation for weed control may have only a minor effect on short-term SOM mineralisation rates. In both experiments, MOC accounted for ≥83% in the Vertosol and ≥73% in the Chromosol. Due to frequent tillage in vegetable production systems, physicochemical stabilisation of C predominates over protection through aggregation.

BACKGROUND Nomacopan, a small protein biologic previously known as Coversin (AK576), is in Phase III clinical development for PNH. Patients completing COBALT, a three-month Phase II trial in complement inhibitor naïve PNH patients, were eligible to move into CONSERVE, a long-term safety and efficacy surveillance study. Seven of 8 patients completed COBALT and all moved into the long-term safety study and received treatment with nomacopan for between 20 and 28 months. Six of the patients were transfusion dependent prior to treatment with nomacopan. METHODS The haematological, clinical and safety results of patients in CONSERVE have been analysed. RESULTS: All patients showed reduction of intravascular haemolysis as evidenced by significant fall of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels and stabilisation of haemoglobin between 1 to 19 months. Of 6 patients who were transfusion dependent prior to entry to COBALT 3 (50%) became transfusion independent during the 12 week trial and 1 became transfusion independent in the 6 months following the trial. All 4 of these patients have remained transfusion independent. Since January 2019 both of the last two transfusion-dependent patients have been transfusion independent for more than 6 months. Patients in COBALT and CONSERVE have had no drug related serious adverse events, no major adverse vascular events, complete inhibition of terminal complement activity at all time points and the drug has been well tolerated. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS: Long term complement inhibition with eculizumab is known to result in reduction of transfusion requirements in patients with PNH. In a 66-month long-term study of PNH patients treated with eculizumab, 64 of 78 (82.1%) previously transfusion dependent patients achieved transfusion independence. [i] In this, much smaller study, 6 of 6 previously transfusion dependent patients stabilised their haemoglobin and became transfusion independent (defined here as no transfusion for 6 or more months), two of these finally reaching this point between 18 and 21 months after starting treatment. The data indicate that nomacopan is safe and well tolerated for long term treatment of PNH by patient self-administration and offers significant therapeutic benefit to patients in terms of transfusion independence, an outcome of key importance to clinicians. It is possible that nomacopan may assist in improving bone marrow activity through its inhibition of LTB4 and the effect on the innate immune system which has been linked to bone marrow failure and clonal deletion and recovery. Abstract A novel method for simulating the torque and temperature curves from a torque rheometer thermal stability test on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was developed. A mathematical model was proposed which combines the chemical kinetics involved in the thermal degradation and stabilisation process of PVC with heat transfer and viscosity relationships within the torque rheometer. The model coefficients were fitted to data obtained from previous experiments with a program written in the Python programming language using the Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (LMA) with multiple starts. The mathematical model fits the torque rheometer data successfully depending on the characteristics of the torque curve. The model fit is successful when the torque curve follows the expected behaviour. An unsuccessful model fit occurs when the torque curve deviates from the expected shape in a very specific way. In the degradation phase the torque curve increases to a local maximum, decreases to a local minimum and then increases again. The exact reason for the dip in torque is unknown.

Abstract Background Despite health centres being the first point of contact of care, there are challenges faced in providing care to patients at this level. In Malawi, service provision barriers reported at this level included long waiting times, high numbers of patients and erratic consultation systems which lead to mis-diagnosis and delayed referrals. Proper case management at this level of care is critical to prevent severe disease and deaths in children. We aimed to adopt Emergency, Triage, Assessment and Treatment algorithm (ETAT) to improve ability to identify severe illness in children at primary health centre (PHC) through comparison with secondary level diagnoses. Methods We implemented ETAT mobile Health (mHealth) at eight urban PHCs in Blantyre, Malawi between April 2017 and September 2018. Health workers and support staff were trained in mHealth ETAT. Stabilisation rooms were established and equipped with emergency equipment. All PHCs used an electronic tracking system to triage and track sick children on referral to secondary care, facilitated by a unique barcode. Support staff at PHC triaged sick children using ETAT Emergency (E), Priority (P) and Queue (Q) symptoms and clinician gave clinical diagnosis. The secondary level diagnosis was considered as a gold standard. We used statistical computing software R (v3.5.1) and used exact 95% binomial confidence intervals when estimating diagnosis agreement proportions. Results Eight-five percentage of all cases where assigned to E (9.0%) and P (75.5%) groups. Pneumonia was the most common PHC level diagnosis across all three triage groups (E, P, Q). The PHC level diagnosis of trauma was the most commonly confirmed diagnosis at secondary level facility (85.0%), while a PHC diagnosis of pneumonia was least likely to be confirmed at secondary level (39.6%). The secondary level diagnosis least likely to have been identified at PHC level was bronchiolitis 3 (5.2%). The majority of bronchiolitis cases (n = 50; (86.2%) were classified as pneumonia at the PHC level facility. Conclusions Implementing a sustainable and consistent ETAT approach with stabilisation and treatment capacity at PHC level reinforce staff capacity to diagnose and has the potential to reduce other health system costs through fewer, timely and appropriate referrals.

It is important to assess the mineralisation of soil organic carbon (SOC) to predict the short-term response of biosphere carbon reservoirs to changing environmental conditions. We investigated the labile (easily-mineralisable) SOC in volcanic soils, where the bioavailability of SOC is typically affected by physico-chemical stabilisation mechanisms that are characteristic of these soils. Ten soils were selected that represent the most typical soil types (mainly Andosols) and natural habitats (xerophytic scrubland, laurel forest and pine forest) in the Canary Islands, a volcanic archipelago. Over two years we measured several physico-chemical SOC fractions with different degrees of bioavailability: water-soluble carbon in fresh soil samples (WSC) and in the saturated extract (WSC<sub>se</sub>), hot water-extractable carbon (HWC), potassium sulphate-extractable carbon (PSC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), particulate organic carbon (POC), humic substances carbon (HSC), and total organic carbon (TOC), and performed CO<sub>2</sub> emission incubation assays. We related these measurements to the potential C inputs of plant litter and roots and to the activity of certain hydrolytic enzymes (CM-cellulase, β-D-glucosidase, and dehydrogenase) that are involved in carbon turnover. In vitro carbon mineralisation measurements from short assays (ten days) were fitted with simple first-order kinetics to investigate SOC. This procedure was simple and allowed us to obtain estimates both for potentially mineralisable SOC and for the heterogeneity of the substrates that were consumed during incubation. The investigated volcanic soils had large labile SOC concentrations in which simple carbohydrates predominated and that were mainly derived from roots and aboveground non-woody residues. Among the analysed physico-chemical SOC fractions, HWC (3.1 g kg<sup>-1</sup> on average at 0-30 cm depth in Andosols) was the most correlated with C<sub>0</sub> (1.2 g kg<sup>-1</sup>) and therefore best represents potentially mineralisable SOC. PSC (0.77 g kg<sup>-1</sup>), which represents an SOC pool of low bioavailability, was protected by its adsorption to allophane in silandic Andosols.

La stabilisation dynamique d’une articulation est une notion fondamentale dans le cadre de la performance, de la prévention, mais aussi de la rééducation. Plusieurs techniques permettent de quantifier la force musculaire en fonction de la modalité de contraction du muscle. On distingue les évaluations isométriques, inertielles, et isocinétiques. Parmi ces techniques, les évaluations isocinétiques semblent être les plus pertinentes pour apprécier l’équilibre de force entre les muscles agonistes et antagonistes tout en considérant les propriétés mécaniques du muscle in situ. Malgré tout, la technique isocinétique, telle qu’elle est utilisée, présente certaines limites, notamment liées à l’utilisation exclusive du pic de force.

The article analyses the operational characteristics of 10W LED lamps with T8 bulb manufactured by ASD (Russia), Smartbuy (Taiwan), and VOLPE (PRC) and 18W FL with T8 bulb manufactured by PHILIPS (Poland) including the dependence of these lamps on the supply voltage. The results of measurements show that: a) the period of stabilisation of electric parameters and luminous flux of LED lamps does not cause discomfort of illumination unlike the said FL, the luminous flux of which at the moment of switching on is 70 % of the nominal value, which is reached after 13 minutes; b) with nominal voltage of supply network, the value of luminous flux of 10W ASD LED-T8R-STD LED lamp (Russia) is 6 % less than the declared one, and that of Smartbuy SBL-T8-10-64K-A (Taiwan) and VOLPE LED-T8-10W/DW/G13/FR/FIX/N (PRC) is even less; c) the general colour rendering index of all studied LED lamps is less than the declared one (72 instead of 80); d) the flicker index of all studied LED lamps does not exceed the declared value of 5 %; e) the characteristics of LED lamps almost do not depend on changes of the supply voltage within the range of ±10 %. The recommendations regarding the application of the studied LED lamps are given.
