A need exists for a new test procedure for the Low Voltage DC (LVDC) Weapons Power System used to provide 28 volt DC power to various portions of the Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Weapons System found on Ohio Class Submarines. The present test procedure does not provide sufficient information to assure that the system will function with the required reliability. This project involved the design and implementation of a test system which would perform the following functions: 1) accurately monitor the performance of the 28 volt LVDC rectifiers in the FBM Weapons System, 2) indicate when a system failure has occurred, 3) provide information to assist in trouble shooting, 4) provide facilities for database storage and analysis. This system is portable, user friendly, and compatible with current test requirements.

I dagens affärsvärld är det i princip ett måste för verksamheter att ta del av den konkurrensfördel som Jinns möjlig via att använda affärsdata genererat av en verksamhets processer för att sedan ta eventuella beslut, detta möjliggörs inom en Business Intelligence- miljö. Dock behöver dessa beslut ofta tas snabbare, mer nu än förr, detta sätter allt större press på den IT-avdelning som skall tillhandahålla beslutsfattare det beslutsunderlag som är nödvändig. På grund av nödvändigheten för dom snabba besluten behöver verksamheter korta ner dom ledtider som den traditionella Business Intelligence-miljön skapar. Ledtiderna skapas via att en beslutsfattare skapar en förfrågan på en analys och IT-avdelningen sedan tar fram en rapport som kan svara på förfrågan. För att verksamheter tillsammans med IT-avdelningen skall kunna minska ledtider kan verksamheten införa en så kallad Self-Service BI-miljö[SSBI]. SSBI fokuserar mer på att göra beslutsfattare självständiga genom att möjliggöra för beslutsfattare att själva, utan hjälp av en IT-avdelning ta del av data och analysera data för att ta sina eventuella beslut. Verksamheter lyckas inte alltid med att införa SSBI, det har visat sig Jinnas många stora utmaningar med ett sådant införande. Att tillgängliggöra data för beslutsfattare inom en sådan miljö är en del av alla utmaningar, men vad Jinns det för utmaningar inom just tillgängliggörandet? Vilka faktorer bör verksamheter fokusera på vid tillgängliggörandet av data, detta är frågor som denna studie skall besvara. Studien baseras på frågeformuleringen nedan: • Hur bör data tillgängliggöras till slutanvändare vid införande av SSBI? Studien genomförs via en fallstudie som involverar ett Jlertal intervjuer av respondenter anställda på ett ledande företag inom Sverige som konsulterar stora verksamheter att inom Business Intelligence och dessutom Self-Service BI. En litteraturgranskning av forskning inom samma domän sker också under studiens gång för att skapa en grund inför intervjuerna. Samt också berika informationen från respondenterna. Resultatet av studien är en modell med diverse faktorer och utmaningar med tre huvudkategorier med tillhörande underkategorier som verksamheter bör fokusera på vid tillgängliggörande av data i en SSBI-miljö.
In today's business world, in fact, it is a must for businesses to take part of the competitive advantage that is made possible by using business data generated by a business's processes and then taking decisions, this is made possible within a Business Intelligence environment. However, these decisions often need to be taken more quickly, more now than before, this is putting increasing pressure on the IT department to provide decision makers with the necessary supporting documentation. Due to the necessity for the quick decisions, businesses need to shorten the lead times that an traditional Business Intelligence environment creates. This is because a decision maker creates an inquiry for an analysis and the IT department then produces a report that can respond to the request. In order for businesses to be able to reduce lead times together with the IT department, the company can introduce a so-called Self- Service BI environment [SSBI]. SSBI focuses more on making decision makers self-reliant by enabling decision makers to themselves, without the help of an IT department, to analyze data to make their decisions. Businesses do not always succeed in introducing SSBI, it has proved to be many major challenges with such introduction. Making data available to decision makers in such an environment is one part of all the challenges, but what are the challenges in the area of accessibility? What factors should businesses focus on when making data available, these are questions that this study answer. The study is based on the question below: • How should data be made available to end users when introducing SSBI? The study is carried out by a case study that involves a number of interviews of respondents employed at a leading company in Sweden that consult large businesses within Business Intelligence and also Self-Service BI. A literature review of research within the same domain also takes place during the study to enrich the information from the respondents. The result of the study is a model with various factors and challenges with three main categories with associated subcategories that businesses should focus on when making data available in an SSBI environment.

I dagens affärsvärld där konkurrensen hårdnar blir beslutsfattande baserat på data en allt viktigare faktor för att kunna utföra bättre beslut. Detta har tidigare mest berört beslut på strategisk nivå men har allt mer även börjat innefatta beslutsfattande på operationell nivå. Detta har medfört en ökande press på IT-avdelningen att bistå personer inom organisationen med rapporter och analyser. Detta har i sin tur även medfört långa väntetider då IT-avdelningen inte hinner leverera dessa i tid. Genom detta har ett relativt nytt koncept uppstått som benämns self-service business intelligence (SSBI). Detta koncept går ut på att övriga anställda ska utföra analyser och rapporter självgående utan IT-avdelningens stöd. Dock har detta visat sig vara svårt att implementera och det finns många utmaningar att överkomma för att lyckas med SSBI. Några av dessa utmaningar benämns som datarelaterade vilka denna studie ämnar ge rekommendationer för hur dessa kan hanteras. Studiens frågeställning är: Hur kan datarelaterade utmaningar inom SSBI hanteras? Studien utgörs av en fallstudie bestående av en litteraturgranskning samt intervjuer för att därmed undersöka hur dessa datarelaterade utmaningar kan hanteras. Resultatet utgörs av ett antal rekommendationer som organisationer kan använda för att hantera datarelaterade utmaningar inom SSBI.

Genome stability has great importance in maintaining cell viability and optimal functionality of cellular processes. Loss of genome stability can lead to cell death in the simplest organisms and to deregulation of the cell proliferation machinery in higher organisms, potentially causing cancer or morbid states. The Single Stranded DNA Binding (SSB) protein of Escherichia coli is an essential protein that binds and stabilises ssDNA stretches. Its role is particularly crucial during DNA replication, recombination and repair processes and it has therefore been predicted to play a prominent role in the maintenance of genome stability. The role of SSB in genome instability was investigated using an E. coli strain in which, the expression of the ssb gene was placed under the control of the arabinose promoter. The level of SSB protein present in the cell could therefore be tuned by varying the arabinose concentration in the medium. A wide characterisation of the behaviour of the strain at low SSB level was carried out. Viability and growth tests showed that a threshold level of protein is required to allow normal growth. Microscopy analyses were carried out to follow cell division, nucleoid morphology and SOS response activation. Cells grown at low SSB level, showed a phenotype consistent with impaired cell division and altered nucleoid morphology. The SOS response was activated at low SSB levels and cell elongation was detected. Lowering the arabinose concentration in solid medium allowed the selection of suppressor strains that could form colonies under the new conditions. Sequencing of the entire genome of one such suppressor strain was carried out revealing a possible candidate for the phenotype change. The stability of a 105bp and of a 246bp DNA imperfect palindromes and the stability of CAG·CTG trinucleotide repeat arrays, inserted in the E. coli chromosome, were investigated in correlation to the SSB cellular level. Lowering the SSB level in cells grown on solid medium, increased the instability of the 105bp palindrome presumably by increasing the number of slippage events. On the other hand, SSB overexpression did not have an effect on the stability of the 246bp palindrome. The stability of a leading strand (CAG)75 repeat array was highly increased by overexpressing SSB, while the same effect was not observed for a leading strand (CTG)137 repeat array. Furthermore, excess SSB caused a change in the deletion size distribution profile for the leading strand (CAG)75 strain, lowering the bias towards big deletions. This is consistent with SSB being able to preferentially impede the formation of big DNA hairpins. Also, SbcCD nuclease was shown to have an effect on the deletion size distribution profile of the leading strand (CTG)137 strain. The lack of SbcCD led to a slight reduction of the number of big deletions.

Dagens affärsklimat är under ständig utveckling och för att möta den ökade konkurrensen är det viktigt för verksamheter att snabbt kunna fatta beslut som är baserade på data. Utmaningarna i detta medför att verksamheternas arbetssätt måste bli mer innovativt för att snabbare kunna anpassa verksamheten. Traditionell business intelligence (BI) där IT-avdelningen oftast ansvarar för att ta fram rapporter åt användarna har svårt att hinna med att skapa rapporter som är nödvändiga för att fatta beslut grundade i data. En lösning på detta problem är att införa Self-Service BI (SSBI) där målet är att låta användarna komma närmre verksamhetens data och på det sätta kunna skapa rapporter utan inblandning från IT-avdelningen. Genom att ta bort IT-avdelningen som mellanhand och flytta ut visst ansvar på verksamhetens avdelningar ställs krav på en tydlig organisation med tydliga roller och detta ligger till grund för den frågeställning som denna studie ska ge svar på som är: Vilka roller krävs för att införa och driva SSBI? Metoderna som valts ut för att kunna ta fram ett svar på denna fråga är systematisk litteraturstudie och fallstudie. Syftet med att genomföra den systematiska litteraturstudien är att analysera vad den befintliga litteraturen tar upp om roller inom SSBI. Fallstudien som består av intervjuer med experter inom SSBI-området syftar till att fånga upp deras erfarenheter och åsikter om det olika roller som är viktiga inom SSBI. Resultatet består av ett framtaget organisationsschema över viktiga roller som behövs för att kunna införa och driva SSBI inom en verksamhet.

Self Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) har förmågan att i grunden förändra beslutfattningsprocessen i organisationer där självgående användare har en kunskapsmakt att använda data för att fatta insiktsfulla beslut. För att förverkliga SSBI i en organisation är utbildning av slutanvändare en essentiell byggsten för ett lyckat införande, samtidigt är detta en konstaterad utmaning i SSBI-sammanhang. Därför är syftet med denna studie att identifiera vilka utmaningar som finns avseende utbildningar av slutanvändare inom SSBI. För att besvara frågeställningen har en intervjustudie genomförts med personer som har yrkesmässiga kopplingar till utbildningar av slutanvändare inom SSBI. Resultatet av studien är elva identifierade utmaningar som kan fördelas över sju olika dimensioner inom utbildningskontexten, och presenteras i en sammanfattande modell. En generell slutsats av studien är att de flesta av de identifierade utmaningarna kan undvikas om organisationen gjort ett gediget förarbete i termer om formulering av en övergripande SSBI-strategi och en kartläggning av slutanvändarnas tekniska kompetens och analysbehov i en SSBI-miljö. Resultatet i denna studie kan användas av organisationer som står inför en lansering av SSBI och vill ha ut mer av sin utbildningsinsats mot slutanvändare, för att öka sannolikheten för ett lyckat SSBI-införande.

We analyze the cross-border effect of tax cuts on R&D activity in the context of profit shifting. A tax cut in one location of a multinational enterprise reduces the user cost of capital for the whole group if profit shifting is possible and exerts a positive cross-border effect on R&D output. Using micro-level data, we find an increase of patent output of 15% upon the implementation of a foreign tax cut for firms with cross-border links. In addition, we find that foreign tax cuts prohibiting profit shifting generate a negative cross-border effect on average patent quality.

Politicians and tax practitioners often claim that tax uncertainty negatively affects investment. In many countries, firms can request fee-based Advance Tax Rulings (ATRs) to mitigate tax uncertainty. We analyze theoretically the circumstances under which investors request ATRs, how tax authorities should price them and how they can affect investment. We assume that tax authorities integrate investors' reasoning into their decisions. We find that it is often optimal for tax authorities to charge prohibitively high fees to discourage firms from requesting an ATR. However, we find that revenue-maximizing tax authorities offer ATRs if the ruling enables them either to significantly reduce their tax audit costs or to increase the probability of detecting ambiguous tax issues. Under certain circumstances, ATRs may effectively foster investment and potentially benefit both the tax authorities and taxpayers. Our results provide new explanations for why taxpayers that face high levels of tax uncertainty often do not request ATRs, even when the fee is rather low. Our results also hold when the tax authority maximizes social wealth instead of its revenues. Regulatory changes in ATR requirements might serve as a natural quasi-experiment for an empirical study of our predictions regarding investment decisions. (authors' abstract)

I dagens affärsmiljöer är det kritiskt för organisationer att kunna ta del av sina affärsdata och använda denna för att fatta beslut och bli konkurrenskraftiga på arbetsmarknaden. Idag behöver människor i organisationer tillgång till data snabbare än någonsin vilket sätter en oerhört stor press på IT-avdelningen. Denna press gör att dem inte hinner med alla förfrågningar vilket leder till att dessa människor behöver få tillgång till och analysera data på egen hand för att fatta tidskritiska beslut. Denna miljö benämns self-service business intelligence (SSBI). Implementationen av SSBI visar sig vara svårare i praktiken än vad många organisationer räknar med då det finns många utmaningar. För att lyckas med SSBI är det kritiskt att organisationer lyckas hantera dessa utmaningar i praktiken. Denna studie besvarar frågan: ❖ Hur kan utmaningarna inom self-service BI hanteras i praktiken? Studien baseras på en litteraturanalys och en fallstudie med intervjuer för att undersöka hur erfarna människor i organisationer anser att dessa utmaningar kan hanteras i praktiken. Resultatet är en framtagen faktormodell som består av olika riktlinjer för hur respektive identifierad utmaning kan hanteras i praktiken.

The next generation of subsea process systems will combine the subsea gas compression technology currently under qualification with the previously developed subsea processing technologies, including separation, multiphase pumping and produced water re-injection. These systems will benefit from process cooling. This paper is an evaluation of the use of process cooling in subsea separation, boosting and injection (SSBI) systems including compression. Fouling is the biggest uncertainty, and potentially the biggest problem, in the design and operation of process cooling for SSBI systems when reliability, size, weight and controllability are considered as the most important design parameters. The room for optimization towards fouling reduction in the process cooling was identified to be in the process system design, in the cooling arrangement, in the heat exchanger selection and in the heat exchanger design. In each of these steps the optimization potential was identified and discussed. A case study was performed in which a direct cooling system using a printed circuit heat exchanger was found to be the most compact solution. The rate of fouling will set the reliability and maintainability of a heat exchanger installed under water. The fouling rate, and subsequently the cleaning strategy will change the design of the heat exchanger. The available information on fouling rate in SSBI systems is not complete. To develop a complete picture of fouling in subsea heat exchangers it is suggested that similar heat exchanger technology already field proven is studied for the collection of detailed operation experience and data. This infromation is useful for the design of subsea process coolers to develop the most compact, reliable and controllable solution.

Det behövs mer databaserade beslut av företag för att konkurrera på marknaden, vilket har bidragit till att business intelligence har gått från att användas på strategisk nivå till att även användas på en mer operativ nivå. Detta har medfört att behovet av analys och beslutsunderlag har vuxit hos ett större antal anställda som har resulterat i att IT-avdelningen i verksamheter blir en flaskhals. I takt med att behovet av BI har vuxit har begreppet self-service kommit, som innebär att användare själva ska kunna ta fram sina beslutsunderlag. Att införa self-service BI innebär dock en del utmaningar, och många av verksamheterna som har infört det blev missnöjda med resultatet. Det största hindret har visat sig vara användarna och det oväntade faktum att det krävs mer utbildning än förväntat. Därför är syftet med den här studien att underlätta införande av SSBI genom att undersöka hur användarrelaterade utmaningar kan hanteras vid införande av SSBI. För att besvara frågeställningen har sex stycken intervjuer genomförts på ett anonymt företag med respondenter som på olika sätt har en koppling till införande av SSBI. Resultatet av studien är en modell över de användarrelaterade utmaningarna vid införande av SSBI och de i detta arbete identifierade rekommendationerna för hur de kan hanteras. Genom att använda sig av dessa utmaningar vid införande av SSBI kan verksamheter ge användarna goda förutsättningar, vilket ökar möjligheten att införa ett lyckat och hållbart SSBI.

DNA is a highly unstable molecule. Endogenous souces of DNA damage, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), can cause DNA damage and it has been estimated that 20000 lesions occur in a cell per day. BER is the major pathway for the repair of these lesions and therefore maintains genome stability, thus preventing the development of human diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Therefore, if BER cannot accomplish the repair, accumulation of DNA damage occurs, triggering different cellular responses, such as cell cycle delay and senescence. The ARF tumour suppressor protein, the gene of which is frequently mutated in many human cancers, plays an important role in the cellular stress response by orchestrating upregulation of p53 protein. Moreover, ARF expression is upregulated in senescent cells, suggesting that ARF induction might be triggerred in response to persistent DNA damage. Although ARF has been reported to be important in the regulation of proteins involved in the DNA damage response, its role is still controversial. Here, it has been shown that ARF gene transcription is induced by DNA strand breaks (SBs) and that ARF protein accumulates in response to persistent DNA damage generated by disabling BER. These data suggest that PARP1-dependent poly(ADP-ribose) synthesis at the sites of SBs initiates DNA damage signal transduction by reducing the cellular concentration of NAD+, thus inhibiting SIRT1 activity and consequently activating E2F1-dependent ARF transcription. These findings suggest a vital role for ARF in DNA damage signalling, and furthermore explain the critical requirement for ARF inactivation in cancer cells, which are frequently deficient in DNA repair and accumulate DNA damage.

Även om SSBI utlovar mycket, är antalet nya och lyckade implementeringar relativt lågt. SSBI är helt enkelt betydligt svårare att implementera än vad många trott. Denna rapport har undersökt de utmaningar som ofta följer med implementering av SSBI, och hur dessa utmaningar kan hanteras. Utmaningarna har identifierats utifrån en litteraturstudie som efter sammanställning har diskuterats med fyra respondenter med goda kunskaper i ämnet, allt för att bättre förstå hur utmaningarna bäst kan hanteras. Utmaningarna har delats upp i sex kategorier: BI-verktyg, Lagar och standarder, Datakvalitet, Datadefinition, Användare och Datatillgänglighet. Resultatet av rapporten är att många av dessa olika utmaningar har en direkt koppling till varandra, men att var och en måste hanteras på rätt sätt för att en organisation ska lyckas med implementeringen.

Dda, one of three helicases encoded by bacteriophage T4, has been well- characterized biochemically but its biological role remains unclear. It is thought to be involved in origin-dependent replication, recombination-dependent replication, anti- recombination, recombination repair, as well as in replication fork progression past template-bound nucleosomes and RNA polymerase. One of the proteins that most strongly interacts with Dda, Gp32, is the only single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) encoded by T4, is essential for DNA replication, recombination, and repair. Previous studies have shown that Gp32 is essential for Dda stimulation of replication fork progression. Our studies show that interactions between Dda and Gp32 play a critical role in regulating replication fork restart during recombination repair. When the leading strand polymerase stalls at a site of ssDNA damage and the lagging strand machinery continues, Gp32 binds the resulting ssDNA gap ahead of the stalled leading strand polymerase. We found that a Gp32 cluster on leading strand ssDNA blocks Dda loading on the lagging strand ssDNA, blocks stimulation of fork progression by Dda, and stimulates Dda to displace the stalled polymerase and the 3' end of the daughter strand. This unwinding generates conditions necessary for polymerase template switching in order to regress the DNA damage-stalled replication fork. Helicase trafficking by Gp32 could play a role in preventing premature fork progression until the events required for error-free translesion DNA synthesis have taken place. Interestingly, we found that Dda helicase activity is strongly stimulated by the N-terminal deletion mutant Gp32-B, suggesting the N-terminal truncation to generate Gp32-B reveals a cryptic helicase stimulatory activity of Gp32 that may be revealed in the context of a moving polymerase, or through direct interactions of Gp32 with other replisome components. Additionally, our findings support a role for Dda-Gp32 interactions in double strand break (DSB) repair by homology-directed repair (HDR), which relies on homologous recombination and the formation of a displacement loop (D-loop) that can initiate DNA synthesis. We examined the D-loop unwinding activity of Dda, Gp41, and UvsW, the D-loop strand extension activity of Gp43 polymerase, and the effect of the helicases and their modulators on D-loop extension. Dda and UvsW, but not Gp41, catalyze D-loop invading strand by DNA unwinding. The relationship between Dda and Gp43 was modulated by the presence of Gp32. Dda D-loop unwinding competes with D- loop extension by Gp43 only in the presence of Gp32, resulting in a decreased frequency of invading strand extension when all three proteins are present. These data suggest Dda functions as an antirecombinase and negatively regulates the replicative extension of D- loops. Invading strand extension is observed in the presence of Dda, indicating that invading strand extension and unwinding can occur in a coordinated manner. The result is a translocating D-loop, called bubble migration synthesis, a hallmark of break-induced repair (BIR) and synthesis dependent strand annealing (SDSA). Gp41 did not unwind D- loops studied and may serve as a secondary helicase loaded subsequent to D-loop processing by Dda. Dda is proposed to be a mixed function helicase that can work both as an antirecombinase and to promote recombination-dependent DNA synthesis, consistent with the notion that Dda stimulates branch migration. These results have implications on the repair of ssDNA damage, DSB repair, and replication fork regulation, which are highly conserved processes sustained in all organisms.

The message that climate change response should be central to municipal planning is clearly communicated in policy, science, and practice; and given that municipal planning is the core function of local government, the task of climate change response mainstreaming lies with them. There is however limited guidance offered to municipalities on how to go about mainstreaming climate response into planning. This study explores how climate change response, with a specific focus on adaptation, can be mainstreamed into South African local government planning instruments and processes. The study is largely framed in critical pragmatism in that it looks into real-world situations and appreciates context-specific complexity to make recommendations relevant to practice. Using a comparative case study design, two cases where mainstreaming has been undertaken were explored. Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality in the Western Cape Province and Thulamela Local Municipality in the Limpopo Province were selected as atypical cases with core similarities and contextual differences, which are able to offer information on the phenomenon of mainstreaming. A qualitative content analysis was undertaken of their latest Integrated Development Plans and Spatial Development Frameworks for both the cases, and the Built Environment Performance Plan in the case of Cape Town. Individual interviews were done in one case and a group interview in the other. Participants included spatial planners, environmental practitioners, and an infrastructure planner, all of whom have been involved in planning, climate change response and resilience. Similar themes with different findings emerged from the two cases, indicating that planning processes and experiences are very context-specific. The themes or factors that emerged can contribute to success in one case and cause significant challenges in another. These factors are a) champions, leadership and momentum, b) networks, mobilisation and organisation, c) information gathering, use and sharing, d) capacity, resources and skills, e) institutional support and coordination, and f) intergovernmental relations and mandate. The study contributes to the fields of local government, municipal planning, climate change adaptation mainstreaming, and the intersection between these fields. Insights are provided into the factors and conditions that can either support or hinder effective mainstreaming of climate change adaptation into local municipal planning instruments and processes, and recommendations are provided to support more effective mainstreaming in local government.

In the light of increasing spectral congestion in the land mobile radio bands below 1 GHz,a renewed interest in Single Sideband (SSB) modulation has been observed world-wide. In this context, much of the work described in this thesis has been directed towards assessing and developing audio signal processing techniques that enable the spectrum and power efficient SSB systems to acheive a comparable performance with that of existing wideband modulation systems. Statistical properties of the land mobile-radio propagation are presented showing that the received signal can be adversely affected by unwanted random phase and envelope modulations. Their effect upon AM, FM and SSB systems are discussed. A novel space diversity system employing a technique termed as Feedforward Signal Regeneration (FFSR) is presented which simultaneously performs the operation of an equal gain combining and suppression of both the random envelope and phase modulations. In connection with the use of FFSR techniques in SSB systems, a phase-locked Transparent-Tone-In-Band (TTIB) pilot-tone configuration which allows the transmission of a "transparent" pilot-tone, positioned centrally within the audio bandwidth, is discussed. Finally, efficient coherent and non-coherent data transmission in the mobile-radio environment is shown to be possible by the use of the TTIB/FFSR diversity system.

Dans cette thèse, nous étudions la modulation par déplacement de fréquence à bande latérale unique (SSB-FSK), un schéma de modulation de phase continue (CPM) ayant, par essence, la caractéristique original du spectre à bande latérale unique (BLU). Tout d’abord, nous présentons l’origine du signal à partir de la physique quantique. Ensuite, nous proposons un détecteur de séquence à maximum de vraisemblance (MLSD) simplifié pour les schémas CPM conventionnels, basé sur le réarrangement montré dans le modèle de signal SSB-FSK. Pour exploiter pleinement les performances de la SSB-FSK, nous examinons la probabilité d’erreur du signal, l’occupation de la bande passante et la complexité du récepteur. Étant donné que différentes mesures de performance sont prises en compte, nous avons utilisé une optimisation multi-objectifs pour obtenir de nouveaux schémas SSB-FSK plus performants que les schémas CPM classiques. En outre, nous proposons une solution pour simplifier la complexité des signaux SSB-FSK en utilisant la décomposition de la modulation d’amplitude d’impulsion (PAM). In this PhD thesis, we investigate the single-sideband frequency shift keying (SSB-FSK), a continuous phase modulation (CPM) scheme having, by essence, the original feature of the single-sideband (SSB) spectrum. First, we present the origin of the signal from quantum physics. Then, we propose a simplified Maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) detector for conventional CPM schemes based on the rearrangement shown in the SSB-FSK signal model. To fully exploit the SSB-FSK performance, we examine the signal error probability, bandwidth occupancy, and receiver complexity. Since different performance metrics are considered, we employed a multi-objective optimization to achieve new SSB-FSK schemes that outperform conventional CPM schemes. Moreover, we propose a solution to simplify the complexity of SSB-FSK signals using the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) decomposition. The PAM pulses were achieved from an algorithm we developed. Furthermore, we offer an optimum generic training sequence for the joint estimation of symbol timing, frequency offset, and carrier phase for burst mode synchronization. The training sequence was obtained using the Cramér-Rao bounds

This thesis presents an examination of the perception and production of Standard Southern British English (SSBE) vowels by Syrian Arabic (SA) Foreign language (FL) learners. The focus of this thesis is the FL learners who learned their English in their country and mostly by non-native teachers. Thus, by definition, the FL learners do not have native English input on a daily basis. This thesis reports on an empirical investigation of the Second Language (L2) perceptual and production patterns of a group of FL learners, which has received little interest in the literature, combining insights from current cross-language speech perception (Perceptual Assimilation Model) (Best 1994, 1995, 1999) and L2 learning models (Speech Learning Model) (Flege 1995). These models were mainly developed to account for early and advanced L2 learners, respectively. Thus, this study aims to develop an account for the perception and production of FL learners based on current L2 models. Results indicate that the specific learning context of FL learners is reflected in their perception and production patterns. For example, these learners live in a predominantly L1 environment, and their L2 input is mainly taken in a classroom and mostly by local teachers. However, this study argues that though FL learners lack native L2 input, they do have access to the phonology, syntax, and structures of the L2 via direct teaching. It is also shown that the perceptual patterns of the learners succeeded in predicting their production patterns, which has implications on the perception-production link for L2 learners, in general, and for FL learners in particular. The main outcome of the present thesis is that it develops an account of the perception and production of FL learners. It outlines the main principles for a proposed Foreign Language Model, in which the peculiarities of FL learners are taken into consideration compared to other groups of learners.

Les protéines SSB sont essentielles à certains mécanismes cellulaires faisant intervenir l'ADN simple brin (ADNsb), tels que réplication, recombinaison ou réparation. Elles protègent et structurent l'ADNsb, rendant son utilisation efficace par différentes machineries qui y sont spécifiquement recrutées. Elles agissent aussi comme des connecteurs entre l'ADNsb et des partenaires protéiques avec lesquels elles interagissent. Il est récemment apparu que plusieurs protéines de type SSB pouvaient être présentes dans un même organisme, ce qui pose la question des fonctions exercées par chacune d'elles. En prenant comme modèle d'étude la bactérie Bacillus subtilis, nous avons entrepris la caractérisation comparée des deux protéines paralogues SSB et YwpH. YwpH a 80% de similarité avec le domaine de liaison à l'ADNsb de SSB, mais est dépourvue du domaine d'interaction protéine-protéine. Elle se lie à l'ADNsb et stimule certaines enzymes qui l'utilisent, avec néanmoins une efficacité inférieure à celle de SSB. Elle n'est pas essentielle et n'est détectée qu'en milieu minimum en phase stationnaire de croissance. Bien que sa fonction cellulaire ne soit pas encore élucidée, sa caractérisation biochimique a permis d'augmenter les connaissances sur cette protéine et d'avancer des hypothèses quant à son rôle. En parallèle, nous avons mis en évidence une nouvelle interaction physique et fonctionnelle entre SSB et PriA, protéine primaire du re-démarrage de la réplication. Nos résultats révèlent une implication majeure de SSB dans ce mécanisme particulier et un modèle dans lequel SSB permettrait le recrutement et l'ancrage de PriA à proximité de la fourche de réplication est proposé
SSB proteins are essential for cellular mechanisms using single stranded DNA (ssDNA), such as replication, recombination or DNA repair. They protect and structure the ssDNA, rendering it effective to be used by various proteins specifically recruited on it. In addition to that, SSB act as connectors between ssDNA and their interacting partners. Recently, it has been revealed that several SSB paralogs could be present within the same organism, raising the question of the functions exerted by each one of them. By using the Gram+ bacterium Bacillus subtilis as a model system, we undertook a compared characterization of the two paralogs SSB and YwpH. YwpH display 80% similarity to ihe ssDNA interacting domain of SSB but it lacks the protein-protein interacting domain of SSB. It is able to bind to single stranded nucleic acids and to stimulate certain enzymes that use ssDNA as substrate, although with a lower efficiency than SSB. YwpH is not essential for bacterial growth and it is only detected during stationary phase in minimum medium. Even though the cellular function of YwpH remains to be elucidated, its biochemical characterization made possible to increase our knowledge of this protein, and to suggest several hypothesis for its role. Besides, we have identified and characterized anew physical and functional interaction between B. Subtilis SSB and PriA, the primary determinant of the replication restart. Our results have revealed a major implication of SSB in this particular mechanism. A model in which SSB would allow the recruitment and the anchoring of PriA near the replication fork is suggested

This thesis examines the computation of inventory levels based on demand history aboard Submarine Tenders that use the Shipboard Automated Data Processing System (SUADPS) for inventory control. The focus of the thesis was the workload and supply effectiveness issues associated with the processing of the SUADPS levels setting program. The objective of the thesis was to determine the effect on supply effectiveness and stock churn if the levels program was processed less frequently. The thesis concludes that the likely effect of less frequent processing of the levels setting program would be an insignificant decrease in supply effectiveness and a significant decrease in stock churn. Further research involving a review of the assumptions and procedures of the SUADPS inventory model was recommended.

Les modifications post-traductionnelles des protéines de réparation de l'ADN et des facteurs chromatiniens par poly(ADP-ribose)ylation et par phosphorylation sont essentielles pour le maintien de l'intégrité de l'ADN et de la chromatine, en particulier dans la réponse cellulaire aux dommages de l'ADN induits par radiation ionisantes (RI). Parmi les protéines impliquées dans ces deux processus nous trouvons, respectivement, la poly(ADP-ribose) polymérase-1 (PARP-1) et PARP-2, et la kinase dépendante des cyclines Cdk5 : PARP-1 et PARP-2 sont impliqué dans le mécanisme de réparationdes cassures simples brin (CSBs) de l'ADN (Single Strand Break Repair : SSBR ) et la déplétion de Cdk5 a été liée à l'augmentation de la sensibilité des cellules aux inhibiteurs de PARPs. Nous avons montré, en utilisant des cellules HeLa stablement déplété pour Cdk5 ou PARP-2, que ces deux protéines sont impliquées dans les deux sous-voies du SSBR, le short- (SPR) et le long-patch repair (LPR). L'absence de Cdk5 ou PARP-2 entraîne des modifications du fonctionnement du SSBR, notamment en termes de recrutement des protéines de réparation PARP-1 et XRCC1, impliquées dans le SPR, et PCNA, protéine clé du LPR, au site du photo-dommage. PARP-2 et Cdk5 agissent aussi sur la balance du niveau des poly(ADP-ribose) car en absence de Cdk5 une hyper-activation de PARP-1 a été montrée, et en absence de PARP-2 une diminution de l'activité de la protéine poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG) a été aussi observée. Cependant, malgré ces changements les deux lignées cellulaires dépourvues de Cdk5 (Cdk5KD) ou de PARP-2 (PARP-2KD) réparent de façon normale les CSBs radio-induites, mais, intéressement et contrairement aux cellules PARP-2KD, les cellules Cdk5KDsont sensibles à l'effet létal des RI. De plus nous avons montré que Cdk5, PARP-2 et PARG sont toutes les trois impliquées dans la régulation du recrutement et de dissociation du facteur chromatinien ALC1 suggérant leur implication dans la régulation de la dynamique de la chromatine en réponse aux photo-dommages de l'ADN. Ces résultats avec l'observation de la diminution du recrutement de PARP-1 dans les cellules Cdk5KD et PARP-2KD, montrent l'apparition d'un réseau complexe de phosphorylation et de poly(ADP-ribose)ylation en réponse aux RI qui implique Cdk5 , PARP-1,PARP-2 and PARG et qui est fort probablement initié par l'activité kinase de Cdk5.

Neste trabalho foram obtidos nanocompósitos de SBS e SSBR a partir de montmorillonitas organicamente modificadas (MMT). Foram utilizados diferentes métodos de obtenção de nanocompósitos de SBS, e todos tiveram como objetivo melhorar as propriedades mecânicas da borracha pela adição de Montmorillonita (MMT). PBLH, borrachas epoxidadas e PBLH epoxidado foram utilizados como agente de compatibilização entre a argila e a borracha termoplástica. Os nanocompósitos foram obtidos em câmara de mistura fechada. Muitos destes nanocompósitos apresentaram melhoria em suas propriedades pela adição da argila e SBS epoxidada. Nanocompósitos obtidos através da borracha dissolvida, com baixa velocidade de agitação, apresentaram maiores valores de módulo, sem perder alongamento e tensão. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos para os nanocompósitos com MMT 10 A (Cloisite 10 A) e SBS epoxidada. Os nanocompósitos de SSBR (copolímero de butadieno e estireno contendo 25% de estireno), também em todos os casos, apresentaram melhoria de suas propriedades com a adição da argila e borracha epoxidada. A adição da MMT e uso das borrachas epoxidadas como agente de compatibilização aumentou as propriedades dos nanocompósitos comparados com a borracha pura, ou seja, a adição da argila e o uso do agente de compatibilização aumentam a força de interação entre a argila e a matriz de borracha, sendo este efeito maior na MMT 10 A e refletindo-se nas propriedades mecânicas, MET e análise de DMA.Para finalizar o trabalho foi avaliado o efeito destes nanocompósitos em uma matriz de polipropileno. Os nanocompósitos de SBS, também obtiveram resultados positivos como modificadores de impacto para plásticos, onde os valores de resistência ao impacto mostram ser 3 vezes maiores que os relativos ao PP puro.
SBS and SSBR nanocomposites were obtained with organically modified montmorillonites. Different methods of obtaining the SBS nanocomposite were employed, and all aimed the improvement of the mechanical properties of pure rubber by adding MMT. PBLH (hydroxylated liquid polybutadiene), epoxidized SBS and PBLH (hydroxylated liquid polybutadiene) were used as compatibilizer between the clay and the thermoplastic rubber. The nanocomposites were obtained in the mixture chamber. Most of these nanocomposites showed improvement in their properties when epoxidized SBS and clay were used. The nanocomposites from a rubber solution obtained using lower agitation speed presented higher values of modulus without losing elongation and tension. The best results were those using the MMT 10 A and epoxidized SBS as compatibilizer. The SSBR nanocomposites, also in all cases, showed improvement in their properties when clay and epoxidized rubber were used. The addition of MMT and the use of epoxidized rubbers as compatibilizer increased the properties of the nanocomposites when compared with pure rubber, which means that the compatibilizer increased the interaction between the clay and the rubber matrix. This effect is stronger when MMT 10 A was used, and it can be verified in the mechanical properties, TEM and DMA analysis.The effect of these nanocomposites as impact modifier in a polypropylene matrix was also evaluated in the present work. The blends with the SBS nanocomposites also had positive results, and the impact resistance test showed to be three-fold higher than for the pure PP.

Business Intelligence (BI) tillhandahåller beslutsfattare inom organisationer snabb och riktig information som kan användas som beslutsstöd. I och med att BI’s omfattning gått från enstaka avdelningar till att beröra hela organisationer sätter det stor press på experter inom IT-avdelningar.Det bidrar till att slutanvändare behöver en miljö som ger dem direkt åtkomst till data för egna analyser och beslut. Den miljön nås genom att implementera Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI). Det SSBI gör är att det effektiviserar processen för beslut. När SSBI implementeras kräver det att de slutanvändare som berörs av det behöver utöka sina kunskaper för att utnyttja potentialen vilket SSBI medför. För nuvarande saknas forskning kring vilka kunskaper slutanvändare behöver inneha vilket har bidragit till att följande frågeställning kommer att undersökas i studien:➢ Vilka grundläggande kunskaper bör en slutanvändare inneha vid användningen av Self-Service Business Intelligence?Studien grundas i en litteraturgranskning och en fallstudie där intervjuer av sex respondenter, vilka förfogar över god kunskap kring SSBI, använts för datainsamling. Resultatet framställer fyra grundkunskaper vilka slutanvändare bör inneha för att öka möjligheten att börja använda SSBI på ett mer framgångsrikt sätt.

Background: In the U.S., Hispanics have among the highest rates of overweight and obesity when compared to other racial/ethnic groups placing them at a greater risk for obesity-related disease. Identifying intervention strategies to reduce caloric intake and/or improve cardiometabolic health in Hispanics is critical to reducing morbidity and mortality among this large and growing population. Evidence exists to support diet-specific behavioral interventions, including beverage modifications, in reducing obesity-related health risks. However, the acceptability and feasibility of a beverage intervention in obese Hispanic adults has not been robustly evaluated. Methods: The objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a randomized, controlled beverage intervention in 50 obese Hispanic adults ages 18-64 over 8-weeks. Eligible participants were obese (30-50.0 kg/m(2)), between the ages 18-64, self-identified as Hispanic, and were able to speak, read, and write in either English and/or Spanish. Study recruitment was completed August 2017. Upon the completion of baseline assessments, participants will be randomized to either Mediterranean lemonade, Green Tea, or flavored water control. After completing a 2-week washout period, participants will be asked to consume 32 oz. per day of study beverage for 6-weeks while avoiding all other sources of tea, lemonade, citrus, juice, and other sweetened beverages; water is permissible. Primary outcomes will be recruitment, retention, and acceptability of the intervention strategies. Our study will also evaluate participant-reported tolerance and as an exploratory aim, assess safety/toxicity-related to renal and/or liver function. Fasting blood samples will be collected at baseline and 8-weeks to assess the primary efficacy outcomes: total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Secondary outcomes include fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Discussion: This pilot study will provide important feasibility, safety, and early efficacy data necessary to design a larger, adequately-powered randomized controlled trial.

Neste trabalho é apresentada a análise de técnicas para a integração de ISFETs (Ion Selective Field Effect Transitors), através do método de montagem por viragem (Flip-chip) usando pasta de solda livre de chumbo e epóxi condutivo de prata, com o objetivo de permitir sua aplicação em Microssistemas de Análise Total (µTAS). Para os testes de integração foram construídas estruturas em dois substratos, o FR-4, pelo método de ligação por fios (wire bonding), e o LTCC, que pode ser aplicado na construção de µTAS. Como os terminais de contato do ISFET tem seu acabamento superficial em alumínio não é possível realizar a montagem por viragem utilizando equipamentos SMT, sendo necessários processos intermediários. Dois processos que permitem o uso de equipamentos SMT foram aplicados: a remetalização, onde camadas de níquel e ouro são depositadas sobre o alumínio do terminal de contato, através do banho químico eletrolítico sem eletrodo (Electroless), e protuberâncias de solda (stud ou ball bumps), que são ligadas ao alumínio do terminal de contato pelo processo conhecido como Stud Ball Bumping (SBB). Na integração do ISFET foi feita a selagem dos terminais de contato e a abertura de uma janela que permite o contato da área ativa (região de porta) do ISFET com as soluções a serem analisadas. A selagem dos terminais de contato foi feita com o fotoresiste SU-8, e a abertura da área ativa foi feita diretamente sobre os substratos de FR-4 e LTCC. Ambos processos apresentaram soldabilidade com a pasta de solda apresentando ponto de refusão em torno de 250°C, indicando que equipamentos SMT podem ser aplicados na montagem por viragem. Verificou-se que o epóxi condutivo de prata foi curado a 100°C por uma hora e também pode ser aplicado na integração do ISFET. Por fim o SU-8 usado na selagem apresentou uma boa adesão aos substratos de FR-4 e LTCC, sendo curado na mesma etapa térmica da pasta de solda e/ou epóxi condutivo de prata ou após estes processos a 150°C por trinta minutos.
In this work is shown the analysis of integration techniques of ISFET (Ion Selective Field Effect Transitor) through the Flip-chip method using lead-free solder paste and silver conductive epoxy, in order to allow its application in Micro Total Analysis System (µTAS). For integration tests two substrates have been made, the FR-4, as already used in the integration of the ISFET, but assembled through wire bonding method, and the LTCC that can be applied in the construction of µTAS. As the ISFET bonding pads has its surface finish in aluminum is not possible assembly through flip-chip method using SMT equipments, requiring intermediate processes. Two process that allow the use of SMT equipment were applied: the remetallization, where nickel and gold layers are deposited on the aluminum bonding pads, through the Electroless chemical baths, and stud or ball bumps, which are connected to bonding pads of aluminum by the process known as Stud Ball Bumping (SBB). In the ISFET integration should be made a seal in the bonding pads and a window that allows the contact of the active area (gate region) of ISFET with the solutions to be analyzed. The sealing of the bonding pads has been made with the photoresist SU-8 and the window of active area were made directly on the FR-4 and LTCC substrates. Both processes presented the solderability with the solder paste reflowed at 250°C, indicating that SMT equipments may be applied to the assembly through flip-chip method, the silver conductive epoxy was cured at 100°C for one hour and can also be applied in ISFET integration. Finally the SU-8 used to sealing have showed a good adherence to the FR-4 and LTCC substrates, being cured in the same thermal step of solder paste and/or silver conductive epoxy or after these processes at 150°C for thirty minutes.

Simultaneous Switching Noise (SSN) is one of the major problems in today highspeed circuits. Power-Ground voltage fluctuation is significantly increasing due to L ∗ (di/dt)) noise known as Power-Ground bounce and can be one major noise source in modern and mixed-signal circuit design. In this thesis first SSN and its sources are studied followed by some theoretical analysis, then we present some clock shapes that cause in SSN reduction. In this thesis, we investigate different clocking techniques in order to reduce SSN. The effect of rise/fall time variation, applying sinusoidal, multi-segment and harmonic suppressed clocks have been investigated and verified by proper circuit simulations. Multi-segment clock shape and harmonic suppression clock shape produce less noise in comparison to conventional clock, so using them as clock of the whole system can be act as noise reduction technique.

Este trabalho trata da realização de um circuito integrado analógico para a conversão de sinais com modulação em amplitude de banda dupla (Double Sideband ou DSB) para modulação de banda simples (Single Sideband ou SSB). Implementado por circuitos de tempo discreto a capacitores chaveados, utiliza-se de um filtro com resposta infinita ao impulso (Infinite Input Response ou IIR) para compor um transformador de Hilbert como alternativa a implementações digitais, que se aproveitam da grande capacidade de processamento paralelo dos circuitos digitais para a obtenção do transformador de Hilbert por meio de filtros com resposta finita ao impulso (Finite Impulse Response ou FIR) de ordem elevada. Fabricado em tecnologia CMOS de 180 nm com capacitores do tipo metal-metal (MiM), a adoção de filtros estruturalmente passa-tudo reduz significativamente a sensibilidade do conversor ao descasamento de capacitores. Para alimentação de 1,8 V e sinais diferenciais de até 1 V, resultados experimentais mostram que o conversor atinge taxa de rejeição de imagem (Image Rejection Ratio ou IRR) maior que 39,5 dB para modulação Lower Sideband (LSB) e 38,0 dB para modulação Upper Sideband (USB) para sinais de entrada na faixa de 25% a 75% da frequência da portadora, valores estes superiores a propostas analógicas anteriores e comparáveis a propostas digitais do estado da arte em circuitos integrados. Com área de silício de 1,09 mm2, o conversor consome apenas 17,7 mW para frequência de amostragem de 1 MHz enquanto sua IRR apresentou desvio padrão de apenas 0,5 dB dentre 20 amostras avaliadas.
The realization of an analog integrated circuit for conversion of Double-Sideband (DSB) amplitude-modulated signals into Single-Sideband (SSB) is presented. Implemented by discrete-time switched-capacitor circuits, it adopts an Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter to realize a Hilbert transformer as alternative to digital implementations which take advantage of high processing capacity from parallel digital circuits to obtain the Hilbert transformer by means of high-order Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters. Fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS technology with metal-metal (MiM) capacitors, the use of structurally all-pass filters greatly reduces the converter’s sensitivity to capacitor mismatch. For 1.8 V power supply and 1 V differential input/output signals, experimental results show the converter achieves Image Rejection Ratio (IRR) greater than 39.5 dB for Lower-Sideband (LSB) modulation and 38.0 dB for Upper-Sideband (USB) modulation for input signals ranging from 25% to 75% of the carrier frequency. These figures are higher than previous analog circuit proposals and comparable to digital implementations of state-of-the-art integrated circuits. Its silicon area is 1.09 mm2 and the converter consumes only 17.7 mW for 1 MHz sampling frequency while its IRR presents standard deviation of only 0.5 dB among 20 chip samples.

The constant growth in network communications technologies and the emergence of Service Specific Overlay Networks (SSONs), coupled with the rapid development of multimedia applications make the management of such technologies a major challenge. This thesis investigates the SSONs management problem and proposes an autonomic architecture, a self-organizing and self-adapting algorithm, and a utility function for monitoring the Quality of Experience (QoE) of IPTV streams in SSONs. First, we examine the different issues stemming from the autonomic management of SSONs and identify the limitations of existing approaches. We then propose an architecture to ease the management of SSONs by incorporating autonomic computing principles to make SSONs acquire self-management capabilities. The proposed architecture introduces autonomic control loops that continuously monitor network components and analyze the gathered data. An Autonomic System (AS) is comprised of one or more Autonomic Managers (AM) which take control of managing other elements in the network. The proposed architecture highlights the different components of an AM and identifies its purpose. The distributed nature of the proposed architecture avoids limitations of centralized management solutions. We then propose a scheme to allow AMs to emerge among the set of nodes in the network as the most powerful ones in terms of different factors, including processing capabilities and stability. Using a self-organizing and self-adapting distributed protocol, each node in the overlay selects an appropriate AM to report to so that sensed data is delivered error-free, and in a timely manner, while the load is distributed over the AMs. Finally, we propose a utility function to monitor the quality of IPTV streams by predicting QoE based on statistical Quality of Service (QoS) information. The proposed function is simple and does not require high processing power. It allows the QoE of IPTV users to be monitored in real-time by the AMs, so that quality degradations are accurately identified and adaptation mechanisms are triggered at the right moment to correct issues causing degradations. Theoretical analysis and simulations studies are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed schemes.

SSBI-verktygen möjliggör att flytta framtagningen av rapporter och analyser av affärsdata från IT-avdelningen till användarna. SSBI svarar mot ett behov av att snabbare skapa rapporter och analyser för att ta affärskritiska beslut. Med en SSBI-implementation finns det ett antal utmaningar som behöver hanteras. Syftet med studien är att skapa förståelse för hur utmaningar relaterade till SSBI-implementationer hanteras, för att möjliggöra en lyckad implementation. Det leder till frågeställningen: Hur hanteras utmaningar relaterade till SSBI- implementationer? För att skapa förståelse för hur utmaningarna hanterats valde vi en kvalitativ metod där vi tolkat konsulters utsagor. Studien utgår från ett konsultperspektiv eftersom konsulterna har erfarenhet kring kundprojekt, som involverar såväl nykomlingar till erfarna BI- organisationer. I slutsatsen presenterar vi tre grupper av angreppssätt för hur utmaningarna hanteras, för att lyckas med SSBI-implementeringar.
The SSBI tools enable the production of reports and analyzes of business data from the IT department to be transferred to the users. SSBI is developed to satisfy a demand to be able to create fast reports and analyzes, to make business driven decisions. With a SSBI implementation, there are a number of challenges that need to be managed. The aim of the study is to identify how challenges related to SSBI implementations are managed, which enable successful implementation. This leads to the question: How are challenges related to SSBI implementations managed? To gain an understanding of how the challenges have been managed, we chose a qualitative method to interpreted consultants' statements. The study is based on a consulting perspective, since the consultants have experience of customer projects, which involve both newcomers and experienced BI organizations. In the conclusion, we present three groups of approaches of how challenges are managed to succeed with SSBI- implementations.

This study combines macro and micro data to quantify the revenue effects of double tax treaties. First, drawing on administrative information, the study estimates the tax sensitivity of income flows (dividend, interest, and royalty payments) at an aggregate level. The analysis finds important direct revenue costs linked to treaty restrictions on taxing rights, especially for flows into a few major investment hubs. However, high elasticities of income flows also suggest that increases in withholding rates at the individual treaty partner level would not necessarily result in more revenue collection. Second, the study uses firm- level information to estimate the sensitivity of reported profitability to changes in the relevant treaty network. The analysis of the reported earnings of multinational enterprise affiliates in Ukraine suggests that the ownership structure and operations with affiliates in certain jurisdictions explain reported profitability, and should thus receive increased attention in risk assessment and transfer pricing audit activities.

The paper analyses whether various aspects of a country's tax system have a positive or negative influence on individuals' attitudes towards the future. These attitudes are measured by an analysis of Google search queries derived from Google Trends which allow constructing an online futureorientation index for a sample of 58 countries. There results of this analysis indicate that capital gains taxes and value added taxes discourage future-oriented behaviour. Also, high personal income tax rates at the lowest income brackets discourage, whereas - surprisingly - the top marginal rates could positively influence an individual's future orientation. The paper contributes to existing research in three ways: First, it expands the existing tax literature by providing evidence that taxes can influence very fundamental personal values, such as individuals' general attitudes towards their future. Second, it contributes to a vast body of cross-cultural studies on future orientation by introducing tax law. Third, by using Internet search patterns the paper introduces these large, automatically gathered data sets into scientific tax research, thereby opening the possibility for further research opportunities. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) Action 2 indicated that tax arbitrage via hybrid mismatch arrangements "result in a substantial erosion of the taxable bases of the countries concerned" and "have an overall negative impact on competition, efficiency, transparency and fairness." The relevant action allowing for neutralising the effects of hybrid mismatch arrangements is therefore needed and justified. To achieve that purpose, the OECD developed different anti-hybrid rules under BEPS Action 2. In that regard, however, one may ask whether addressing tax arbitrage via hybrid mismatches as proposed by the OECD is of interest and relevance for developing countries. This paper aims to map that unexplored research area by means of a comparative analysis in four developing countries - Uruguay, Colombia, Brazil, and South Africa.

This paper investigates the impact of knowledge capital stocks on total factor productivity through the lens of the knowledge capital model proposed by Griliches (1979), augmented with a spatially discounted cross-region knowledge spillover pool variable. The objective is to shift attention from firms and industries to regions and to estimate the impact of cross-region knowledge spillovers on total factor productivity (TFP) in Europe. The dependent variable is the region-level TFP, measured in terms of the superlative TFP index suggested by Caves, Christensen and Diewert (1982). This index describes how efficiently each region transforms physical capital and labour into output. The explanatory variables are internal and out-of-region stocks of knowledge, the latter capturing the contribution of cross-region knowledge spillovers. We construct patent stocks to proxy regional knowledge capital stocks for N=203 regions over the 1997- 2002 time period. In estimating the effects we implement a spatial panel data model that controls for the spatial autocorrelation due to neighbouring regions and the individual heterogeneity across regions. The findings provide a fairly remarkable confirmation of the role of knowledge capital contributing to productivity differences among regions, and add an important spatial dimension to the discussion, by showing that productivity effects of knowledge spillovers increase with geographic proximity. The present study addresses the question of how taxpayers' perceptions of government and tax authorities are influenced by media coverage. The effect that national political topics, such as tax legislation and the expenditure of tax revenues, have on the tax payer is examined. Tax compliance depends on trust in authorities, i.e., a commonly shared belief that politicians and tax authorities act in order to promote social welfare, and the perceived power of authorities, i.e., taxpayers' perceptions of tax authorities' ability to detect and pursue tax crime. We investigate the influence of specific tax related information in the news on intended tax compliance. Results from a questionnaire-based experiment with 487 employees indicate that media coverage influences the indicated trust in tax authorities, as well as the perceived power of governmental institutions, and consequently, has an impact on participants' intended tax compliance. The findings suggest that governments should actively engage in the provision of relevant information on tax matters. This would increase both trust in the state and the authorities as well as awareness of their power regarding the enforcement of tax laws, effectively acting as a means to regulate taxpayers' behavior.
