A theoretical solution method for the in-plane vibration characteristics of the plate with cutouts is proposed in this paper. The energy principle in conjunction with the Rayleigh–Ritz solution technique is adopted for the theoretical modeling of the in-plane vibration of the structure. The energy functions for the plate with cutouts are established by subtracting the energies of the cutout domains from the total energies of the whole plate. To ensure continuity over the entire solution domain, the in-plane displacements are composed of two-dimensional standard Fourier series and supplementary functions. The in-plane eigenmodes of the plates with different square cutouts are compared with the results obtained from the finite element method (FEM), with good agreements. The influences of the cutouts on the in-plane vibration characteristics of the plates with cutouts are investigated by varying the number, size, and position of the cutouts.

The aims of this study are to obtain experimental data on the crushing of stiffened square tubes, and to develop a simple analytical expression for predicting the mean crushing strength of stiffened plates making up a plated structure. A series of axial crushing tests in a quasistatic condition was carried out on thin-walled square tubes which were composed of four identical panels. Specimens with longitudinal and/or transverse stiffeners, including unstiffened specimens, were tested, varying dimensions of plate and stiffener. The effective crushing length and the mean crushing strength of the test specimens were investigated. It was concluded that a longitudinally stiffened plate could reasonably be replaced by an unstiffened plate with equivalent plate thickness. Based on this approach, a simple expression for the effective crushing length and the mean crushing strength of stiffened plates was derived.

Based on the classical thin plate theory, this paper proposes new sets of enriched basis functions for in-plane and out-of-plane displacements of square plates that can yield admissible functions for the Ritz method using the moving least-squares (MLS) approach. These admissible functions display the discontinuities of displacement and slope across a crack; give the correct singularity order for the stress resultants at the crack tips; and enhance the Ritz method’s ability to recognize the existence of an internal crack in a plate. To confirm the validity of the proposed approach, convergence studies were performed on the buckling loads and vibration frequencies of plates with central horizontal cracks, and the results obtained agree closely with the published ones as well as those generated by the commercial finite element software. To demonstrate the importance of including all the in-plane stress resultant components in the analysis, the effects of different in-plane stress resultant components on the buckling loads and vibration frequencies of simply supported center-cracked square plates under uniaxial uniform loading were investigated. The present approach was further employed to study the effects of cracks’ lengths, orientations, and locations on the buckling loads and frequencies of cracked square plates under different boundary conditions and in-plane loading conditions.

Abstract Many Mechanical structures are manufacture by using plates. However Harmonic Analysis of plate is growing research subject in today’s era. In the present research paper vibrational response of simply supported square plate with uncertain parameters are studied. In designing any real life mechanical system uncertainty phenomenon plays vital role. Thus it becomes important to study the effect of uncertainty for different frequency domain in mechanical system. In present research work square plate as structural element is selected. On this plate mass, stiffness and both collectively mass and stiffness uncertainty are taken. The plate boundary condition selected is simply supported. For determining the plate dynamic response FEM tool is used. While doing harmonic analysis the behavior of all uncertain parameters plates are compare with bare plate. In the FRF plot of plate with stiffness uncertainty, it is found that it has drastic changes in dynamic response. Thus this shows that uncertain parameters have adverse effects and it changes the dynamic behavior of the structure.

Cutouts are commonly found in aerospace, ships, and marine structures, which have a great influence on mechanical properties such as stress concentration, natural frequency, and structural load-bearing performance of the structure. In this study, buckling behaviors of a square plate with a circular flanged cutout at the center are explored numerically, aiming to address the influence of different cutout parameters on the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling behaviors of the perforated plate. The flanged-perforated plate is subjected to uniaxial compressive loads, and the four edges are simply supported in the out-of-plane direction. The influence of various cutout parameters on the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling behaviors of the perforated plate is examined through a series of buckling analysis. In addition, structural weight reduction of the uniaxial compressed perforated square plates is carried out under the constraint of the elastic buckling stress of the plate structure. The findings indicate that different cutout parameters have a significant impact on the buckling performance of the plate. Perforated plates with flanging exhibit higher buckling strength than those without flanging, and variations in plate geometric parameters (such as the plate slenderness ratio and cutout radius ratio) are associated with increases in elastic buckling stress and elasto-plastic ultimate strength. The results of this paper can provide references for the design of flanged-cutouts in engineering.

The high-strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance properties of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites makes them potentially well-suited for application in ship structures, bridges and off-shore oil platforms. These structures are often formed by stiffened plates and are subjected to axial load and out-of-plane load. Cutouts and openings are provided in the plates for access and maintenance. The main objective of this study was to examine the buckling behavior of GFRP-stiffened composite plates with square cutouts under a combination of axial and out-of-plane load up to failure. Four blade-stiffened composite plates without a cutout and four with square cutout were fabricated with stiffeners as a continuous layup of the flange plate using glass fiber and epoxy resin. The initial geometric imperfections were measured, and plate imperfections (Δx), stiffener imperfections (Δsy) and overall imperfections (Δsx) were calculated from the measurements. All fabricated-stiffened composite plates were tested up to failure. The finite element model was developed in ANSYS software and validated with the experimental results. It was observed that GFRP-stiffened composite plates failed by stiffener compression/stiffener tension mode of failure. The presence of out-of-plane loads and cutouts reduced the axial load carrying capacity of the stiffened composite plates.

Metallic sandwich plates have been widely used in blast-resistance structures due to the excellent capacity of energy absorption. In this work, dynamic response of square honeycomb sandwich plates is investigated using LS-DYNA. The effect of mass of TNT charge on the deformation and on internal energy of square honeycomb sandwich plate is numerically analyzed. The relationship of deflection, as well as internal energy and the mass of TNT charge is obtained. The performance of square honeycomb sandwich plate is compared with monolithic solid plate with the same mass and blast loading. During the response of sandwich plate, the deformation includes local dent of upper face sheet, overall bending and stretching of both face sheets and buckling of square honeycomb core while the deformation of monolithic solid plate is involved in overall bending and stretching. It denotes that square honeycomb sandwich plate has better capacity of resistance-deformation and energy absorption than that of monolithic solid plate with the same mass and the same blast loading.

Thermal buckling behaviour of FGM square plates with simply supported edges has been studied in this note using the classic plate theory (CPT). It is assumed that the nonhomogeneous mechanical properties of the plate, graded through thickness, are described by a power-law FGM (simply called P-FGM) and sigmoid FGM (S-FGM). The plate is assumed to uniform temperature rise. Resulting equations are employed to obtain the closed-form solutions for the critical buckling temperature change of FGM. The results are compared with the results of the first order shear deformation theory.

Chaotic motion of a simply supported functionally graded materials (FGM) square thin plate under one-to-two internal resonance is studied in this paper. The FGM plate is subjected to the transversal and in-plane excitations. Material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and change continuously throughout the thickness of the plate. The temperature variation is assumed to occur in the thickness direction only and satisfy the steady-state heat transfer equation. Based on the Reddy’s third-order plate theory and Hamilton’s principle, the nonlinear governing equations of motion for the FGM plate are derived by using the Galerkin’s method to describe the transverse oscillation in the first two modes Numerical simulations illustrate that there exist chaotic motion for the FGM rectangular plate.

Plates, which geometric and physical parameters slightly differ from constant and depend only on the radial coordinate, are analyzed. For free vibration frequencies of a plate, which thickness and/or Young’s modulus depend on the radial coordinate asymptotic formulas are obtained by means of the perturbation method. As examples, free vibrations of a square plate with parameters linearly or parabolically depend on the radial coordinate, are examined. The double frequencies of square plates with similar edge support of all edges are of special interest, since any variation of the thickness or stiffness causes some loss of symmetry one may expect the split of double frequencies. The asymptotic formulas permit to determine, which of two equal unperturbed frequencies corresponding to wave numbers n and m increases faster with the small parameter. For a wide range of small parameter values, the asymptotic results for the lower vibration frequencies well agree with the results of finite element analysis with COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4.

Longitudinal vibration of thin phononic crystal plates with a hybrid square-like array of square inserts is investigated. The plane wave expansion method is used to calculate the vibration band structure of the plate. Numerical results show that rotated square inserts can open several vibration gaps, and the band structures are twisted because of the rotation of inserts. Filling fraction and material of the insert affect the change law of the gap width versus the rotation angles of square inserts.

In this paper, a spherical fragment penetrating to square honeycomb sandwich plate and solid plate which has the same mass as sandwich plate are simulated by LS-DYNA code. The fragment impacts plates at normal incidence and oblique incidence with 30º impact angle at the velocity of 300m/s, 350m/s, 380m/s, 400m/s, 450m/s and 500m/s separately. And the damage pattern of sandwich plate, the acceleration of fragment and the energy absorption of sandwich plate are acquired. For sandwich plate, the acceleration of fragment is less than that of solid plate and the internal energy absorbed is larger that that of solid plate. The result can be used to design new active fragment to improve the damage effect to sandwich plate.

In this paper, local-thickened plates are adopted for aluminum alloy square cups stamping with relatively low values of residual stresses and small radius at the bottom corner. By utilizing numerical and experimental methods, the effects of process parameters and plate local thickening on the residual stress distribution of hot stamped aluminum alloy square cups are studied. Furthermore, the influence of plate local thickening on the radius of bottom corner of square cups is also investigated. The results showed that with an increase in the forming temperature, blank holder force and die corner radius, residual stresses in hot stamped square cups can be reduced. The same effect can be achieved by decreasing the die entrance radius. As opposed to the flat plates, using local-thickened plates can not only reduce the residual stresses values in hot stamped square cups, but also decrease the radius at the bottom corner of square cups. When the optimized thickening scheme of plate is used, the smaller radius at the bottom corner, the lower residual stresses in the square cups are obtained.

For a detailed investigation of the kinematics of our Galaxy we need accurate proper motions and photometric data of stars over a wide range of magnitudes. The proper motions have to be obtained with respect to an extragalactic, i.e. nonrotating reference system. The best way to determine absolute proper motions of a great number of stars for further statistical analysis is to use the enormous amount of information stored on photographic plates taken with large Schmidt telescopes within the last decades. Since automated measuring machines have become available it is no longer a problem to extract this information from a Schmidt plate. Large Schmidt plates cover a sky area of more than 30 square degrees with usually thousands of stars and hundreds of galaxies per square degree outside the galactic plane. With the Tautenburg Schmidt telescope (134/200/400) more than 8000 plates have been taken in selected Northern sky areas since it was mounted in 1960. A 24 cm × 24 cm Tautenburg plate covers a field of about 10 square degrees, and a 20 minute exposure of a B plate has a limiting magnitude of 19 to 21. In comparison to other large Schmidt telescopes the plate bending is reduced to a minimum due to the four metre focal length and the use of relatively small plates. Therefore irregular positional shifts of the emulsion caused by the rebending after the exposure are of less influence. The large focal length leads to a plate scale of 51 arcsec/mm providing a relatively high positional accuracy.

A magic square is defined as a square array of distinct positive numbers arranged such that the sum along the horizontal, vertical, and main diagonal directions are the same, which is called a magic number. Previously, we leveraged the magic square concept to create a new class of phononic structures whose dispersion behavior can be tuned without altering their global mass and stiffness. In this study, we study the dispersion behavior of a thin plate with non-structural mass arranged in a magic square pattern. The plate unit cell is partitioned into nine portions and individual point masses are embedded at the center of each portion. Our results show that the magic square mass-embedded plate provides a low-frequency out-of-plane bandgap whose widths can be controlled while maintaining the global mass of the plate structure. Additionally, we investigate a magic plate concept by applying different densities at each portion associated with the magic square patterns. Our preliminary results show that the magic density distribution results in the emergence of polarized bandgaps and provides a possibility of altering the plate modal frequency without altering the mode shape or the global mass.

Based on the first-order shear deformation theory, numerical methods and mechanical experiments, the shear buckling characteristics of hull plates with different holes are investigated. Through eigenvalue buckling analysis, the critical buckling stress of square plate with hole under uniform shear load on four edges was calculated. The relationship between the critical shear stress and the hole type, hole size and plate thickness was obtained by parameterization. The reduction coefficient (ki) was defined to characterize the effect of the hole on the plate, and the reduction effect of circular hole, square hole and fillet square hole was simplified by graph and fitting polynomial. The results show that the critical buckling shear stress obtained from numerical simulation is in good agreement with the experimental value. For different types of holes, the critical buckling shear stress of the square plate has the same trend with the plate thickness. Both plate thickness and hole size have great influence on the shear stability of the perforated square plate. When the hole size is constant, the critical shear stress increases with the increase of plate thickness. The smaller the hole size is, the greater the influence of plate thickness. The critical shear stress decreases with the increase of hole size, and there is a similar linear relationship. The smaller the plate thickness, the more obvious the linear relationship. In addition, based on the reduction coefficient curve or fitting polynomial proposed in this paper, the influence rules of the three different holes on the shear stability of hull plates can be obtained quickly and effectively, thus providing a useful reference for the design optimization and mechanical property evaluation of ship structures with holes.

Working platforms and support caissons of offshore steel structures are often designed with plate boxes or plate girders. The important shear walls or shear webs must often be perforated to allow utilities, etc., to pass through. The failure mode of these large perforated shear panels is typically shear buckling, usually in the plastic range. The paperpresents results of a finite element buckling analysis with inelastic material behaviour and gives general guidelines for the ultimate capacity design of perforated shear plates. The parameters affecting the ultimate capacity of square plates with circular perforations under uniform shear stress were investigated using the incremental structural analysis program NISA83. Nonlinearities in material properties and geometry were taken into account in the calculation of ultimate capacities of each perforated shear plate.The parameters investigated in the study were hole size for a concentric hole and hole location for a constant hole size. Only single unreinforced round holes were considered. Three capacities were calculated for each variation of these parameters: the ultimate in-plane capacity, the elastic buckling capacity, and the ultimate elastic-plastic buckling capacity.In order to check the input data and to provide concise display of the results, a graphic postprocessor was developed as part of the research. The program NISPLOT uses colour graphics to generate plots of the nodes, element mesh, the deflected shape, and stress patterns of the loaded plates. This paper presents the behavior of square concrete-filled tubular (CFT) columns with different penetrating gusset plates under axial load. Load transfer mechanism in the CFT columns including load distribution between gusset plate and core concrete and composite action of the gusset plate and steel tube was investigated. Experimental results showed that the axial load can be transferred from the bottom edge, ribs, and the hole of the gusset plate to core concrete through the bearing mechanism. Adding ribs or a hole on the gusset plate can efficiently facilitate load transmission and improve the composite action. Numerical models were established to determine the distribution of axial forces among members in the square CFT column. Then, revised coefficients of elastic modulus for the square CFT column with the gusset plate were proposed.

Theoretical studies of the stress-strain state of base plates, which are the base of the UZRP-16 universal collapsible machines have been done. These machines are used for welding works in machine building industry. The finite element method was applied to solve the problems. Nature of influence of strength and structural parameters on the base plate stress-strain state in operation has been determined, namely: the relations between displacements and stresses arising in the base plates and the bending moment magnitudes have been recorded; the stress-strain state pattern of the base plates has been obtained depending on the place of bending moment application; influence of the conditions for bearing and fastening the plates on their stress-strain state has been investigated; influence of the plate geometric parameters on stress and displacement has been studied; The stress-material and displacement-material relations have been obtained for the plates. Based on the theoretical study results of the base plate stress-strain state, the following have been obtained: stress plots and patterns of deformed surfaces, which are symmetrical with respect to the plate central axes; maximum values of normal and tangential stress components arising in the field of bending moment application; stress on the rectangular base plate surface is 2.1 times higher than the stress on square plate surface under the same conditions of bearing and loading; stresses acting on the plate surfaces and being tensile stresses within the range of 10 to 70 MPa. It was found that the square shape of the plates, according to the stress state, is predominant in relation to the rectangular shape. The optimal condition for bearing is fixing the plates at nine points. For the first time, graphs were drawn for choosing the base plate thickness under action of various operational loads.

The main objective of this study is to conveniently and rapidly develop a new dimensionless number to characterize and predict the deflection of square plates subjected to fully confined blast loading. Firstly, based on the Kirchhoff–Love theory and dimension analysis, a set of dimensionless parameters was obtained from the governing equation representing the response of a thin plate subjected to impact load. A new dimensionless number with a definite physical meaning was then proposed based on dimensional analysis, in which the influence of bending, torsion moment and membrane forces on the dynamic response of the blast-loaded plate were considered along with the related parameters of the blast' energy, the yield strength of the material, the plate thickness and dimensions of the confined space. By analyzing the experimental data of plates subjected to confined blast loading, an approximately linear relationship between the midpoint deflection–thickness ratio of the target plate and the new dimensionless number was derived. On this basis, an empirical formula to predict the deflection of square plates subjected to fully confined blast loading was subsequently regressed, and its calculated results agree well with the experimental data. Furthermore, numerical simulations of square plates subjected to blast loading in a cuboid chamber with different lengths were performed. The numerical results were compared with the calculated data to verify the applicability of the present empirical formula in different scenarios of blast loading from explosions in a cuboid space. It is indicated that the new dimensionless number and corresponding empirical formula presented in this paper have good applicability and reliability for the deflection prediction of plates subjected to fully confined explosions in a cuboid chamber with different lengths, especially when the plates experience a large deflection–thickness ratio.

A square grid sandwich plate is modeled as a laminate plate in this paper, and the equivalent method is proved according to natural frequencies of the grid sandwich plate and the equivalent plate. Effects of geometric and material parameters on the equivalent Young’s modulus, equivalent thickness, and equivalent density are discussed and some conclusions are obtained:(1) effects of thickness of upper and lower panels on equivalent parameters are the same; (2) keeping the total thickness of upper and lower panels a constant, the equivalent thickness reaches its maximum while thickness of upper panel is equal to that of lower panel, meanwhile the equivalent Young’s modulus and equivalent density get to their minimum values; (3) the equivalent thickness and density increase with thickness of grid sandwich core; (4) the equivalent Young’s modulus decreases while the thickness of grid sandwich core increases; (5) the equivalent Young’s modulus increases with that of the grid core; (5) the equivalent density is inversely proportional to the equivalent thickness; (6) the equivalent Young’s modulus is inversely proportional to the equivalent thickness. These conclusions are helpful to design square grid sandwich plate.

In the present paper, the incipient cavitations number was analyzed by theoretical considerations. By using simulation methods, it could be regarded that the incipient cavitations number was mainly dominated by the contraction ratio of the orifice plate. The less the contraction ratio of the orifice plate is, the larger is the incipient cavitations number. The effects of orifice plate’ thickness on the incipient cavitations number was not obviously and could be neglected. When Reynolds number is more than 105, Reynolds number has little impact on the incipient cavitations number.

AbstractIn this study, a thermal buckling analysis of laminate composite square plate was performed with elliptical hole cutout using the finite element method. Graphite/Epoxy laminate plate used in this study is symmetrical stacking sequence plate [(0/90)2]s. This laminate square plate was subjected to temperature loading with clamped support on all edges. Moreover, the parameters considered were fiber orientation (θ), a/b ratio (elliptical hole), elliptical hole inclination (φ), thermal expansion coefficient ratio (α1/α2), and thickness of plates (t). The results showed that as the thermal expansion coefficient ratio changes, the elliptical hole ratio and the elliptical hole inclination have inconsequential effects on the performance of the resistance of laminate composite plates. The maximum values of thermal buckling amplification factor were obtained when the ratio a/b = 1.0, which is a circle cutout,while the minimum values were obtained when the ratio a/b = 0.5, regardless of the thickness of plates. Moreover, the plate with elliptical or circle cutout hole provides about 4% to 9% higher buckling resistance than that of the plate without hole cutout, because when subjected to temperature loading the plate with hole can release stress better than the plate without hole.

AbstractIn this paper, the band structures of Lamb waves in the two-dimensional phononic-crystal plates are calculated and analyzed based on the plane wave expansion method. The phononic-crystal plates are composed of an array of circular crystalline iron cylinders embedded in the epoxy matrix. Square lattice and triangular lattice are analyzed and discussed, respectively. For the square lattice, two complete band gaps exist, and a narrow pass band between the complete band gaps separates them apart. For the triangular lattice, a wide complete band gap existing with the ratio of gap width to midgap frequency Δω/ωm equal to 72% is found. Furthermore, the influence of the plate thickness is crucial for band structures of Lamb waves. Tuning plate thickness can shift the pass bands effectively, and band shifting causes the variation of the width of complete band gap and its opening and closure.

The elastic critical load coefficients of square plates, under different inplane load configurations on opposite plate edges, are determined and the results compared. The stability analysis was performed by a finite element method that was developed by the authors. The parameters considered in the analysis are the Kinney's fixity factor, and the width factor of the patch load. It was found that the coefficients of the critical loads increase with increasing values of fixity and width factors. The opposite tendency is that a plate under a patch loaded towards the two corners of an edge is more stable than a plate loaded concentrically at the center of the edge.
