An integer programming approach is taken to schedule daily training flights in a Japanese operational flight squadron and an American flight training squadron. Two related models for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) are considered for pilots just out of the training pipeline and for fully qualified pilots. Explicit measures of effectiveness that update pilot currency are used, while instructor and aircraft availabilities create resource restrictions. The models are implemented in the GAMS language and solved with the ZOOM solver, using simulated data which include up to 19 pilots. A typical model with 477 constraints and 129 variables is solved in 2.30 seconds on an IBM 3033AP. In addition, a training squadron model in the United States Marine Corps is considered. The approach is similar to the JMSDF models, except that a student must be assigned an instructor and there is a difference in training policy. The model is formulated using GAMS and solved with ZOOM solver, using the data from the training squadron HMT303, Camp Pendleton, CA. The data includes 11 student pilots and 15 instructors. A typical model with 146 constraints and 984 variables is solved in 23.5 seconds on an IBM 3033AP.

Squadron Officer College (SOC) provides professional military education to captains in the U.S. Air Force. Improved requirements elicitation, work-breakdown structure analysis, and capacity analysis are recommended to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of SOC. Because course length is constrained by other USAF needs, a method for trading requirement satisfaction using stakeholders is recommended to maximize value from the available time. Significant efficiencies are identified that can result in increased student throughput, increased curriculum content, or both. Currently, SOC can graduate 4,060 students yearly and has facilities to handle over 6000 students per year. Increasing the percentage of staff that actively teaches has the greatest effect on throughput; 36% of staff are actively instructing. Administration and organization efficiencies should be explored to increase the percentage of active instructors. Implementing a continuous improvement cycle could increase student learning regardless of throughput. Spiral development could be implemented to update lessons or the entire course. Customer feedback and stakeholder involvement need to be improved; currently, SOC customers, Air Force commanders, do not have a direct and timely way to influence curriculum design. Using different delivery modalities, SOC may find new efficiencies or increase learning effectiveness. SOC should examine combinations of online delivery methods in order to reduce course length or costs.

An aviation squadron's flight schedule has a major impact on that organization's performance and morale. The ability to consistently draft a correct flight schedule that accounts for all applicable factors, requires a flight schedules officer with significant experience and good judgement. Even with those qualities, the task will normally be a lengthy one. The traditional procedure of using grease boards is antiquated in this age of microcomputers and user-friendly software. An integrated database application and expert system would provide the capability of expediting the flight scheduling process while simultaneously producing a consistently high quality schedule. It would also provide the training to elevate non-expert schedulers to an expert level of performance

The consolidation of Fleet Replacement Squadrons (FRS) represents one method of achieving planned force reductions. This thesis utilizes the Cost of Base Realignment Actions (COBRA) cost model to develop cost estimates for determination of the cost effective site location. The A-6 FRS consolidation is used as a case study. Data were compiled using completed Functional Wing studies as well as local information sources. A comparison between the cost estimates provided by the COBRA cost model for the alternate site locations is provided. Conclusions on the utilization of the COBRA cost model for the consideration of FRS consolidations and directions for future research are listed in the final chapter.

Outsourcing is a commonly used method for providing cost savings in business and the Federal Government. This project begins by providing background on the history, goals, and problems associated with the A-76 process. It will then analyze the financial management aspects of the Air Forceb2ss 2001 decision to outsource one of its supply squadrons to determine whether anticipated cost savings were achieved. Any costs savings or increases will be analyzed to determine to what extent they exceeded expectations. If added costs came up throughout the life of the contract, the causes of these will be sought and determination made whether or not they could have been anticipated in the initial contract competition and used in the initial cost comparison. Furthermore, this research lays a foundation for building a body of knowledge to be utilized in future research regarding the federal A-76 or competitive sourcing practices and procedures, from which overarching conclusions of federal outsourcing can be drawn to include strengths and weaknesses of the procedures currently utilized.

Manpower management within all activities of the United States Navy has traditionally been an extremely challenging function. Careful, crucial reconciliation of manpower reports such as the Enlisted Distribution and Verification Report (EDVR) and the Activity Manning Document (AMD) are a critical event in the proper execution of such a process. Unfortunately, an automated process where such a manual, regularly occurring, time consuming, error prone, man-hour intensive routine is performed does not currently exist. Specifically, in the area of Capability Ratings, Manning, Training, Equipment and Supplies, an activity should be able to extract a prescribed range of data from their EDVR and AMD and have it automatically calculate the T-Rating and M-Rating as required by the Functional/Type Wing Commander. This thesis will attempt to address the feasibility, and requirements for such an automated software application utilizing COTS technology with the additional utilization of application interface development to automate to the greatest degree possible, the regularly recurring reconciliation of the EDVR and Activity Manning Document.

This paper will present a novel approach along with a reference design for using commercially available hardware and software and a minimal amount of custom programming to help address these issues.

This study explores the role of the Royal Navy's North American squadron in protecting Britain's colonies and trade in North America from 1847 to 1815. The squadron had its origins in the war of 1739--48, when it became clear that a fleet based on the eastern Atlantic or the West Indies could not adequately support operations in the North American theatre. The British naval establishment, however, even when North America was the principle theatre of war, never developed as strong an attachment to the North American squadron as it did to its fleets in the West Indies or other theatres. It was, with a few notable exceptions, generally treated as one of the lesser commands of the Royal Navy, and rarely received more than secondary consideration from the Admiralty. This was especially true during the Napoleonic Wars, in which the North American station was viewed a one of the 'quiet' stations, especially when compared to the more active stations in the West Indies.
England's main priority was in defeating France, and she was willing to achieve this at the expense of antagonizing the United States, leading to an unnecessary war with them in 1812. Yet even when faced with a new war in North America, the needs of the squadron were considered of secondary importance to the war in Europe, and several months passed before sizable reinforcements were sent to the North American theatre. Even when the war in Europe ended in 1814, the British leaders continued to treat North America as a secondary theatre. Their efforts to gain victory were at best half-hearted, and the government was more interested in demobilizing the navy to cut costs than in defeating the United States.
The War of 1812 brought little glory to England or the Royal Navy, and there was much criticism in the way the conflict was fought after the war. The inability of England's leaders to correctly read the situation in the United States or to understand the American threat led them to send forces inadequate to wage more than a limited war in North America. Despite this, the performance of the North American Squadron in this period was far more commendable than has generally been acknowledged, especially in light of the handicaps set upon it. This work will give a detailed description of the operations of the squadron, to give a better understanding of its role in this period.

The Air Force sustainment system, which includes maintenance and logistics, is facing difficult challenges. As the maintenance system is being downsized, operations tempo is increasing and private companies are entering into competition for maintenance workload. The Air Force is under intense pressure to improve maintenance performance. Attempts to change the maintenance system in a piecemeal fashion have often led to unintended consequences and global sub-optimization. High-level simulation models of the maintenance system that could illustrate critical tradeoffs could provide a valuable tool for learning, and help improve system performance in the future. This thesis uses a simple high-level simulation model to model the sustainment of a unit of C-5 aircraft. It examines high-level tradeoffs in performance and cost due to the number of aircraft, the number of spare parts, and cannibalization practices. The effects of depot repair time and the failure probability of aircraft parts are also considered. In a system like that of the Air Force sustainment system that aims to improve maintenance and logistics performance and reduce cost, yet must deal with large demand variability and must be prepared for wartime surge, cannibalization, a large number of aircraft, and a large inventory of spare parts may be necessary and may even be cost-effective.

Following their breaching of German dams in May 1943, No. 617 Squadron, Royal Air Force, was maintained as a specialist precision bombing unit. For the remainder of the Second World War the Squadron carried out precision attacks using new and unconventional weapons, culminating with Barnes Wallis’s deep penetration bombs, TALLBOY and GRAND SLAM. This thesis will show that the numerous accounts of the Squadron’s history have failed to take account of many factors that determined its role. By concentrating on the operational record and weapons, both popular historians and scholars have given a distorted and interpretatively incomplete description of the Squadron’s development. This in turn has led to an incomplete perception of the Squadron’s Development and a misconception of its full contribution to the bomber offensive. This thesis identifies policy and decision making bodies and examines their role in selecting weapons and targets for the Squadron. It explores the issues which determined the role played by the Squadron: changes in Air Staff policy for Bomber Command, choice of targets, the development and production of weapons, and tactical requirements. Comparison is made between the planners’ original intentions and the final operational record. Many of the Squadron’s operations emerged from an inability to follow through from initial planning. Such failure resulted from factors that included unrealistic expectations of weapon performance, delays in the development of new weapons, and political intervention. Alternative targets were selected not only to take advantage of the Squadron’s existing capabilities but also to address specific issues that were often imposed on the planners by outside agencies which would have otherwise diverted Bomber Command from the main offensive. In other instances the Squadron was used to supplement existing operations carried out by main force. The gestation time for new weapons was such that when a weapon emerged its originally intended targets were no often longer relevant. Accordingly, new targets had to be found. The Squadron’s role in the development and assessment of weapons, equipment and new techniques for the Command is revealed to be greater than previously recognised. This new approach to the Squadron’s wartime role examines the policy and planning backstory to the Squadron’s operations. It reveals a hitherto unrecognised complexity in the evolution of the Squadron’s role, and demonstrates how haphazard delays and setbacks were transformed into new policy to meet ever changing requirements.

Flying Squadrons are the very substance of an air force. By its nature, the air service is a highly technical one requiring both complex machinery and sound human judgement to function at its peak. The smallest independent unit of an air force is the squadron. Squadrons have a discrete status which makes them ideal candidates for in-depth study. This thesis examines the impact of technology and command on a single squadron's operations because technology and command have been and will remain pivotal in determining the success or failure of the air service. Although the Australian No 1 Squadron has existed almost continually from 1916 to the present, this thesis only examines a specific period of its life. The period 1916-1958 was chosen since the squadron formed as an independent Australian Flying Corps unit in January 1916, served in both World Wars and the Malayan Emergency, returning to Australia to resume domestic operations and training in 1958. Of significance to the work, during the specified period, the Squadron was controlled by both the Army and Air Force, by both the British and Australian Governments, had successes and failures and was an operational and a training unit. The Squadron has thus mirrored the growth and changes experienced by the developing Air Force as a whole. The main purpose of examining such a squadron is that it provides an insight into the development and thinking of the RAAF and highlights pitfalls evidenced in technological and command problems which still plague military staff today. In examining the operations and operational effectiveness of No 1 Squadron, three determinants have been specifically examined: technology, that is the aircraft flown, the commanding officer's personality and his methods and the organisational structure under which the Unit operated. Naturally, all three matured as doctrine, knowledge and experience also matured. The Thesis concludes that when the Squadron is winning, it is generally technology that creates the relative advantage and when loosing, strong leadership in the form of command must come to the fore. The results obtained support the thesis in keeping with contemporary RAAF doctrine, that technology and command strongly impact squadron operations and hence, operational effectiveness.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of vitamin E supplementation on lipid peroxidation, muscle damage, muscle soreness and physical performance following repeated bouts of whole body resistance exercise. Eighteen active males were randomly assigned to receive either vitamin E (1200 IU per day) or placebo for 31 days. Following 21 days of supplementation, subjects engaged in 3 resistance exercise sessions, separated by 3 days rest (EX-1, EX-2 and EX-3 on days 22, 25 and 28, respectively). Plasma malondialdehyde concentrations did not peak until the morning prior to EX-3 in the vitamin E (VE) group (10.0 ± 0.6 µmol/L) and the day following EX3 in the placebo (P) group (9.6 ± 0.9 µmol/L), with no significant differences between groups. Creatine kinase activity was significantly elevated the day following EX-1 in both groups. The VE group had a near 2-fold greater CK peak as compared to the P group the day following EX-1 (404 ± 49 and 214 ± 60 U/L, respectively), but the two groups had similar CK values by day 31 (113 ± 35 and 107 ± 36 U/L, respectively). Muscle soreness was significantly increased for each group the day after EX-1 with no significant differences between groups.Furthermore, there were no significant differences between groups in muscle strength, power or endurance. The results of the present study do not indicate any positive effect of vitamin E supplementation against lipid peroxidation, muscle damage or muscle soreness as a result of repeated days of resistance exercise. In addition, vitamin E did not have an effect on muscular performance.

Reconnaissance missions are not only one of the vital modes of intelligence-gathering methods; they are one of the most important contributors of military intelligence as well. They show the battlefield as it is to the commander. A simplified reconnaissance cycle includes the arrival of reconnaissance requests, planning of reconnaissance flights, flying the mission and exploitation of the films or images, and then dissemination of the intelligence reports. The reconnaissance cycle is modeled for four different scenarios (peace and war as situations, RF-4 and F-16 as configurations). There are two points of view regarding this cycle. The first is the reconnaissance requesters' view: they want to know the estimated time it would take for a request to be answered, based on the resources and other factors, before an actual request was made. The second is the reconnaissance squadron commanders' perspective: they want to respond to as many reconnaissance requests as possible. For that reason, they want to know and revise the ideal numbers of personnel and equipment. For the purpose of answering these questions, satisfying these requests, and having a better understanding about the reconnaissance cycle, Reconnaissance Squadron Workflow is modeled, experimented and analyzed in this thesis. Analysis includes regression models and partition trees. When results are considered, we see that there is no common rule to determine which factors (either decision or noise) are the key determinants for each scenario. But we noticed that noise factors have much more impact on several measures of effectiveness than decision factors in each model. Some of these noise factors could be controllable, including aircraft, camera and pod defect probabilities and their repair times. Therefore, some precautionary measures should be taken to reduce these defect probabilities and repair times. Specifically, in the RF-4 configuration models, pilot filming error is a significant factor, which shows that training of the pilots cannot be ignored. When the F-16 models are considered, we see that data link defect probability is a significant factor too. This suggests that special precautions should be taken to keep this capability working.

The military, and the Marines specifically, are experiencing a gap in their light mobility, persistent ISR and CAS/FAC(A) capabilities. Ever changing international and local political and economic realities are impacting the way in which the Marines will continue to act as a force projection of the national strategy. The use of commercial off-the-shelf aircraft, integrated with existing sensors and weapons systems, is a performance and cost effective augmentation to existing military aircraft and is a discussion centered on placing the right technology, not always high technology, at the right place and time to influence the next battlespace. Researchers considered the future environments these aircraft would operate in and the capabilities that would enhance current aviation capabilities and augment distributed operations. Four aircraft were considered and compared in configuration, performance, cost and commonality on the current commercial market. In addition to the discussion of aircraft, consideration was given to the benefits of the creation of a fixed wing light observation squadron within the Marines and its ability to influence operations and augment current aviation capabilities.

This dissertation is a study of the Royal Navy's campaign against the slave trade from their base at the Cape of Good Hope from 1861-4. During this period the Cape Squadron (which included the West African Station at this point) was under the command of Rear Admiral Sir Baldwin Walker. Under his command the first major successes against the East African slave trade were achieved. The study comprises of three main sections. The first gives background information about the Royal Navy, international relations and the state of the slave trade suppression at the time. The second examines the actions of the Cape Squadron under Walker's command. The third section gives detail of the cruises of specific Royal Navy ships and evaluates their success ( or otherwise) in suppressing the slave trade. Themes explored in this dissertation include the international nature of the slave trade, the policy of substituting legitimate trade for the slave trade, the influence of naval technology and how interactions between 'men on the spot' affected the success of suppression. Also explored is Britain's motivation for undertaking so difficult and expensive a task. Conclusions drawn are that the international nature of the slave trade and the lack of treaties (regarding the right to search shipping) with some powers, particularly France, greatly hindered the Royal Navy's suppression efforts. The substitution of legitimate trade for the slave trade worked successfully on the West African Coast but many of the legitimate enterprises relied upon slave labour, a fact which the British and other European powers chose to ignore. The personal interaction between men on the spot proved to be an important factor in determining the success (or failure) of the slave trade suppression efforts. New naval technologies were not as effective as they could have been in suppressing the slave trade due to the poor quality of ships assigned to the slave patrol (although this was remedied somewhat during Admiral Walker's tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the Cape Squadron). Britain's motivation for undertaking the suppression of the slave trade is shown to have been a combination of humanitarian concerns and political and economic expediency.

The Tenth Cruiser Squadron provided a vital element to the Blockade of Germany, patrolling the seas between northwest Scotland, Iceland and Greenland. It was the longest continuous naval operation of the war lasting from 1914-1917. The Squadron’s resources were armed merchant cruisers manned by Naval Reservists and Mercantile Marine ratings all commanded by a Flag Officer and Royal Naval Commanding Officers. The thesis follows the Royal Navy’s deliberations to establish its Reservist elements and how the Navy assumed the men of the Mercantile Marine could be brought into naval service. A parallel debate in Parliament considered the viability of taking up ocean liners for conversion to armed merchant cruisers. Both sets of discussions lasted nearly fifty years. Most existing Squadron literature is chronological, drawing heavily on official reports of proceedings. This thesis concentrates on analysing personal diaries and biographies and is focused on the crews’ daily work to reveal a broad picture of life in the Squadron. Topics included are pay, accommodation, feeding scales, daily routines, promotion, pastoral and medical welfare, and recreation. These issues were in addition to the daily threats from surface and submarine attack and the constant debilitating bad weather. Although deemed successful, the thesis concludes, the blockade could have been tightened sooner if the Government had used statistics already held on imports and exports. The conclusion is also made that the Royal Navy’s failure to understand fully the shipping industry’s unique facets and the merchant seaman, created problems that could have been avoided. The Squadron’s operational achievement was intercepting nearly 13,000 suspect vessels. Its patrols performed a constabulary function which encouraged ships to call voluntarily at examination ports to be searched effectively. Less tangible, but equally praiseworthy, was the successful cohesion built amongst crews of widely differing experience.

Predicting critical wind thresholds for non-convective wind events is a challenge for todays operational forecasters. This study evaluates two different methods to forecasting non-convective wind gusts of 35 knots at five locations within the 15th Operational Weather Squadrons area of responsibility. In 2001, Olivier Brasseur developed the Wind Gust Estimate (WGE) as a physically based representation of the boundary layer parameters required to produce gusts at the surface. Previous research compared the WGE to the Air Force Weather Agencys non-convective wind gust algorithm. In this research, the WGE is statistically compared to the Rapid Update Cycles (RUC) wind gust algorithm that is empirically derived to produce wind gusts forecasts in the RUC model. Utilizing a WRF ensemble data set, the statistical results show the RUC performed better overall at three of the five locations when evaluated with the 35 knot threshold. Case study analysis revealed that the WGE performed best on seven of the ten case studies. A best fit linear regression is applied to both algorithms and the performance is evaluated on ten independent case studies to analyze accuracy improvements and the potential use of such tuning to the algorithms for future applications. The results of this research suggest that integration of both non-convective wind gust forecast methods into operational forecasts at the 15th Operational Weather Squadron could prove valuable with further testing and evaluation against established rules of thumb and other accepted techniques.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Military units are continually expected to do more with less. This is especially true in the Naval Aviation Training Commands. Military forces are globally committed now, while training commands are producing a product for the future. As such, both the operationally committed forces and the Shore Training Commands need experienced Fleet Aviators. Practically, however, Operational Commanders get priority and Training Commands are forced to provide qualified officers to fill compulsory Individual Augment (IA) billets. Eventually, this policy of ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’ will adversely impact the flow of newly qualified officers to back-fill the Fleet. The objective of this study is to determine a realistic manning level for a single squadron in the Naval Aviation Training Command and use that information to provide leadership with a quick estimate manning ratio of students to instructors. This ratio will allow leadership to quickly estimate potential production shortfalls if student requirements change unexpectedly.

The world is currently experiencing what is termed 'the information revolution'. The ability to access, manipulate and store information has grown tremendously due to computers and advanced telecommunications technology. Organizations, including the U.S. military, must adopt to the new technology available in order to effectively compete in the future world environment. In the case of the military, however, the task-based hierarchical structure and lack of an information technology infrastructure are preventing the efficient use of technology and information system integration. Barriers to integration, such as information hoarding, independent application development, lack of IT management and external driver specialization, will continue to proliferate task-based organizations. The military will be prevented from achieving success in information technology integration by the very structure it has created. Organizations must reengineer around the process rather than the task in order to achieve success in this area and develop a sound information infrastructure to alleviate personnel from routine and repetitive work. This thesis provides a sample of how reengineering around the process and creating an information infrastructure can increase a naval aviation squadron's efficiency and make them more competitive in the future.

ABSTRACT Background: Accessibility to reliable and cost-effective assessment of auditory processing skills is limited in South Africa. With the development of tele-audiology, tools such as the Feather Squadron (FS) application have been developed to make this form of assessment more cost-effective and accessible. Purpose: To determine whether the performance on the FS correlates with performance on certain traditional assessment tasks, viz. Frequency Pattern Test (FPT) and Dichotic Digits Test (DDT), to establish its relevance in a South African population. Design: A retrospective, within-subject, comparative design was used. Study Sample: 66 South African participants, aged between 8 and 9 years of age and educated in English. Method: The FS, FPT and DDT were administered following a peripheral hearing assessment. The data were considered in two ways: Firstly, by comparing whether in each instance the participant had scored either at or below -2SD or whether they had scored above-2SD on the subtests of the FS and compared these scores to the same traditional tests, and secondly, by comparing the Z-scores obtained on the FS versus the Z-scores obtained on the same traditional test by applying a double arcsine transformation. Results: Using the -2SD criteria yielded no significant association when comparing the Dichotic Digits FS vs Dichotic Digits traditional test, or when comparing Tonal-Pattern Temporal Processing FS vs FPT in the humming or labelling conditions. Using the Z-score comparison, a statistically significant correlation was obtained when comparing the Tonal-Pattern Temporal Processing FS vs FPT, labelling condition and Dichotic Double-Words FS (linguistic) vs DDT. Conclusions: There is sufficient early evidence to suggest a statistically significant correlation between certain subtests of the FS with traditional tests of auditory processing to merit its use in the South African population. Further, using the broad pass/fail criteria of -2SD lacks the precision to adequately identify patterns of response and may need to be re-evaluated. -bis(ferrocenylmethylene)ethylenediamine was prepared from the reaction of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde and ethylenediamine and characterized by IR, Raman, 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviour of this ligand was also studied for the first time by cyclic voltammetry. Diferrocenyl diimine ligand was used in the thermal substitution of 1,5-cyclooctadiene in Cr(CO)4(2:2-1,5-cyclooctadiene) at 38°
C in toluene for two hours to form the tetracarbonyl[N,N&rsquo
-bis(ferrocenylmethylene)ethylenediamine]chromium(0), [Cr(CO)4(BFEDA)]. This complex was succesfully isolated and crystallized from its 1:1 toluene/dichloromethane solution and characterized by elemental analysis, MS, IR, 1H, 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Electrochemical behaviour of the complex was also studied by cyclic voltammetry and the mechanism of electrode reaction was investigated by in-situ UV-VIS and IR spectroscopy measurements. This new complex has the iron atom of ferrocene unit in conjugation with the chromium metal center and, therefore, shows an electronic communication between two metal atoms.

El trabajo realizado en la Tesis tiene como objetivo general el estudio estructural de nylons fundamentalmente mediante la difracción de rayos-x y la microscopía electrónica. Los nylons estudiados se agrupan en tres familias:

a) Nylons n con elevado número de metilenos: nylon 12 y nylon 16. El nylon 16 ha sido sintetizado y caracterizado por primera vez.

b) Nylons 2/n: nylon 2/12 y nylon 2/16. Síntesis y caracterización de ambos productos siguiendo el método general de síntesis de nylons 2/n.

c) Nylons (n, n+2): Nylons 4,6, 6,8, 8,10 3,5 y 5,7. Se ha realizado la síntesis de todos ellos excepto del nylon 4,6 el cuál se ha estudiado a partir de una muestra comercial (DSM, Holanda).

Se han determinado las condiciones experimentales apropiadas para la preparación selectiva de las formas alfa y del nylon 12 en monocristales y películas. Los datos cristalográficos registrados para la fase y están en total acuerdo con la estructura descrita en la literatura. Los datos obtenidos para la fase alfa nos llevan a proponer para
esta forma una estructura triclínica basada en un modelo de empaquetamiento de láminas progresivo.

Se ha llevado a cabo la síntesis del nylon 16 mediante policondensación térmica del ácido 16- aminohexadecanoico y efectuado su caracterización físico química. Presenta una Tf de 164 C. El análisis estructural se ha realizado sobre cristales crecidos en disolución y se determina una forma y.

Se han sintetizado las copoliamidas 2/12 y 2/16 por condensación de ésteres activos y posterior postpolicondensación en estado sólido. Presentan Tf a 230 y 215 C respectivamente. El nylon 2/12 presenta dimorfismo mientras que en el 2/16 sólose ha observado la forma II; la forma II tiene una estructura pseudohexagonal con cadenas en conformación de hélices 6 y puentes de hidrógeno dirigidos en tres direcciones a 120 ; la forma I es minoritaria y sólo se observa bajo condiciones especiales.

The Seven Years’ War represented a period of great mobilization of British sailors and soldiers. Not only did men need to be found to man the ships and garrison the forts in the Western Squadron and North America, but they also needed to be fed and kept healthy during the conflict. Due to poor living conditions aboard Royal Navy ships, expeditions to North America were met with disease that would drastically reduce the numbers of able seamen. This was compounded by demobilization that followed the War of the Austrian Succession, forcing the British forces to rely on impressment to augment their troop numbers. Though there was a concerted effort to take healthy men with seafaring knowledge, local magistrates and constabularies saw this as an opportunity to rid their towns of the unwanted, and the demands of manning an ever growing Navy forced the Admiralty to take the sick and infirm. British prisons during this time were rife with typhus and smallpox, and the guardships that the impressed men would travel to were also areas of infections. The Royal Navy vessels were typically overfilled with men, and the tight living conditions encouraged the diseases to spread, creating ships that were not a wartime asset, but a liability to arrive in friendly ports in North America. There, the infection would spread to the local population, causing continued manning problems for the British during the conflict, and strained relations between the Admiralty and local governors. The infected troops limited British military effectiveness, and threatened the success of operations, as seen in the delay of the siege of Louisbourg in 1757, and the defeat of the British forces outside Quebec City in 1760. The experience with disease within a wartime context allowed Britain’s emerging medical class to publish important research, leading to positive changes to shipboard hygiene and medicine by the end of the eighteenth century.

Анотація:
Препарат гідроксисечовина викликає загибель бактеріальних клітин. Ця сполука призводить до того, що бактерії починають продукувати токсичні для їх організму сполуки, і таким чином відбувається елімінація небезпечних мікроорганізмів. Це наводить на думку про існування низки антибіотиків, які діють аналогічно до гідроксисечовини. Сама гідроксисечовина протягом багатьох років застосовується при вивченні наслідків інгібування реплікації ДНК у дріжджів, ссавців і бактерій Е. coli. Крім того, дана сполука іноді використовується в хіміотерапії з метою попередження розвитку ракових пухлин. Дана робота присвячена розробці методів і вдосконаленню методик синтезу таких похідних N- гідроксисечовини, як N, N-діалкокснаміди, з подальшим скринінгом цих сполук на біологічну активність. У тезах коротко представлений огляд літератури, що стосується методик синтезу похідних N- гідроксисечовини. Також наведені методики синтезу N-хлор-N-алкоксисечовин та N-Хлор-N-алкоксикарбаматів та висновки, що стосуються розробки нових зручних методик синтезу стернино завантажених N,N- діалкокикарбаматів і N, N- діалкоксисечовин із відповідних N-хлор-N-алкоксипохідних карбаматів і сечовин трет-бутанолізом останніх у присутності трифлуорацетату срібла.
