This thesis derives the theory of distributions, starting with test functions as a basis. Distributions and their derivatives will be analysed and exemplified. Schwartz functions are introduced, and the Fourier transform of Schwartz functions is analysed, creating the basis for Tempered distributions on which we also analyse the Fourier transform. Weak derivatives and Sobolev spaces are defined, and from the Fourier transform we define Sobolev spaces of non-integer order. The theory presented is applied to an initial value problem with a derivative of order one in time and an arbitrary differentiation operator in space, and we take a look at conditions for well-posedness under different differnetiation operators and present some minor results. The Riesz representation theorem and the Lax--Milgram theorem are presented in order to offer a different perspective on the results from the initial value problem.

Magical realism comes from Franz Roh, a german art historian and critic, who first used the term to describe the Post-Expressionism movement in visual art. His seminal writings and definitions on Post-Expressionism, then known as magical realism, were translated into Spanish and made available to Latin America in the mid twentieth century. Authors like Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel Garcia Marquez adopted Roh's writings and re-appropriated magical realism into literary art, and from there the new genre proliferated through the Latin American Boom and magical realism in literary fiction reached global recognition, inspiring authors across the world to take it up and continue the tradition into the present.

Today’s cities are built and shaped with a large inequality in how the space is distributed between different vehicles and way of transportation. Parking located along roads only function as storage for cars. Streets have become walk-through paths lacking identity. The focus lies on parkings along roads and how we can turn some of them into something new. My graduation project is exploring how small changes at several different locations can bring the local spirit into the city, while creating a vibrant and dynamic cityscape.  The aim is to make the urban development to start from its grassroots and from there determine in which way we will change our cities. The goal is to redefine the public space in between the buildings, that today is used by motor vehicles, and to create something new and something that can enrich the city as a whole.

Whilst there exists a body of work concerning the nature of wastelands and derelict spaces - what I term 'informal spaces' - within human geography, urban studies architecture and planning literature, there have been few attempts to link these theories with spatial planning practices. Accordingly, responding to this lack of sustained empirical research, this thesis explores the relationships between spatial planning practices and the production, (re)production and use of 'informal spaces,' ultimately aiming to further our knowledge of these complex relationships. It considers the potential of such spaces to act as a standpoint from which critical perspective towards much urban planning and design can be generated. Furthermore, investigating whether such commonly derided spaces can be conceptualised as a rich resource for urban life. The thesis does this by analysing how four chosen case studies within Manchester and Salford are appropriated, modified, performed, and conceptualised. Following the selection of the case studies, utilising qualitative data obtained by ethnographic methods including walking, observation and photography, unstructured interviews and further ethnographic interviews whilst walking, the study examines the ways in which such spaces are used by a variety of publics. Further qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, the analysis of secondary sources including current planning documents and historical data, are investigated and subsequently analysed to build an accurate genealogy of the sites, understanding in detail the planning contexts and future visions that have produce and sustain them as 'informal.' Key themes focus on the temporalities of the planning process as well as the ways in which stalled timescales intersect with other temporalities of nature and of cultural practice, encouraging appropriation. The ordering and disordering processes that designate and transform these spaces, are also discussed. Finally, the multiple affordances, encouraged by periods of temporal suspension and associated processes of disordering, that promote a diverse array of practices and potentialities are analysed. This research also contributes to debates surrounding the spatiality of dereliction.

Inspired by my final Studio IV project in 2010, the Capsule Hotel, and the growing demand for efficient housing due to overcrowding in developing cities, this thesis explores, examines and realizes the need for compact homes. The need of reducing a small living space to the bare necessities, whilst allowing consumers to quickly transform and personalize the function requires great understanding of space efficiency and construction methods. Realizing a carefully designed space is one thing, but actually understanding how or why it is put together in a particular way is another. In this day and age, architects tend to create with the intention of purely design and often forget to consider and fully understand how the pieces actually come together, often leaving such tasks to contractors to "work out". What would happen to the design industry if consumers were not only able to customize and assemble their own apartment furniture, but at the same time get involved in the design of their furniture units? How would this impact consumers as well as the industry? The driving force behind Capsule Homes is to design a product that will provide users with the everyday amenities that can be transformed and customized, whilst involving the consumers in the affordable construction process. My thesis acts as a design proposal for introducing a new method of designing and customizing living spaces, whilst involving the consumer in the process from ordering units to understanding the construction methods, to ultimately living in a customizable quarters. Based on my research and analysis, I will construct a 1/4-scale prototype of thoroughly designed, flat-pack, customizable furniture.

This project investigates how to design an architecture in a context of virtual space, and how to utilise the exclusive possibilities of the virtual context.  The main case study about the virtual space and impossible space is based on video games. After analysing the mechanism of building such 'impossible spaces' in various video games, this project conducted an experiment on designing several virtual spaces in the game engine, Unreal Engine 4, to investigate the differences between architecture in the real space and in the virtual space. In addition, another architecture experiment was conducted in an impossible space: a space where gravity is modified to be vertical to the surface of a triangle swept Mobius Strip. Walking in such a space offers an exclusive 'impossible' experience. Such an experience is possible to be presented by the manifestation of Unreal Engine 4.

Current models of visual spatial attention are based on the extent to which attention can be allocated in 2-dimensional displays. The distribution of attention in 3-dimensional space has received little consideration. A series of experiments were devised to explore the apparent inconsistencies in the literature pertaining to the allocation of spatial attention in the third dimension. A review of the literature attributed these inconsistencies to differences and limitations in the various methodologies employed, in addition to the use of differing attentional paradigms. An initial aim of this thesis was to develop a highly controlled novel adaptation of the conventional robust covert orienting of visual attention task (COVAT) in depth defined by either binocular (stereoscopic) or monocular cues. The results indicated that attentional selection in the COVAT is not allocated within a 3-dimensional representation of space. Consequently, an alternative measure of spatial attention in depth, the overlay interference task, was successfully validated in a different stereoscopic depth environment and then manipulated to further examine the allocation of attention in depth. Findings from the overlay interference experiments indicated that attentional selection is based on a representation that includes depth information, but only when an additional feature can aid 3D selection. Collectively, the results suggest a dissociation between two paradigms that are both purported to be measures of spatial attention. There appears to be a further dissociation between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional attentional selection in both paradigms for different reasons. These behavioural results, combined with recent electrophysiological evidence suggest that the temporal constraints of the 3D COVAT paradigm result in early selection based predominantly on retinotopic spatial coordinates prior to the complete construction of a 3-dimensional representation. Task requirements of the 3D overlay interference paradigm, on the other hand, while not being restricted by temporal constraints, demand that attentional selection occurs later, after the construction of a 3-dimensional representation, but only with the guidance of a secondary feature. Regardless of whether attentional selection occurs early or late, however, some component of selection appears to be based on viewer-centred spatial coordinates.

In this thesis, I discuss the Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation, the Higgs mechanism, and the relevance of these two theories to the bridging of cosmology and particle physics. Although the former theory is in the field of cosmology while the latter is in particle physics, their similarities are impressive. Both attempt to understand the origins of mass. Even more striking is the mathematics involved in each of these theories. The Brans-Dicke theory and the Higgs mechanism both introduce a new scalar field that is coupled to matter in the universe. Although these theories were formulated around the same time in the early 1960s, are so similar in motivation and method, and became quite popular in their own respective fields, they remained relatively unknown outside of their field for quite some time. In this thesis, I have summarized both the Brans-Dicke theory and the Higgs mechanism. Then, I have analyzed the number of articles citing the Brans-Dicke and Higgs papers to understand when particle physics and cosmology first began integrating. To extend this further, I have looked at how many articles in 1961, 1971, 1981, and 1991 can be categorized as both particle physics and cosmology. In conclusion, we see that the two fields were slow to build common ground, although this has improved since the 1980s. By the 1990s, collaboration between particle physics and cosmology had greatly increased, most likely because of attempts to unify gravity with the other three forces.

The thesis highlights five projects undertaken during the doctorate. Each project attempts to break down preconceived notions of time and space both physically and politically. For Transparent Room'the gallery's external views are filmed and then projected on a structure within the gallery. This immersive environment allows viewers to reassess their surroundings. Speeding up the films highlights the functionality of the space around the gallery. Progressive enlargement of the films from pictorial to abstract questions the authenticity of the digitally mediated image. In 'Feedback' a room is filmed without the knowledge of the audience. This film is projected live in the adjacent room and is progressively enlarged by a computer, maintaining the inherent form of the pixels. A one way mirror separating the rooms allows the viewer to compare the Veal'and projected image. The roles of the performer and the audience are merged. "Living Bodies/Clothes Contours' uses the dancers as source material for the work. Manipulating conditions of time and scale, films of the dancers are used as a backdrop for the performance. A seamless relationship was created between the dancers and the projections, using pre-recorded and live footage, blurring the boundaries of reality and illusion, both past and present. "Construction Sites'foil owed 'desire lines'through Leeds Millennium Square, the walking routes before and after the square's construction. Through film, people could follow these desire lines, exposing construction work inside the square and reconnecting the streets. Nn Transit'explores the city by creating maps that alter conventional perceptions of urban time and space. The maps are created by personal journeys through the city, using different combinations of networks. The maps are then constructed to show points in time rather than space. They re-organise the city's form in a temporal dimension. Context is crucial. The work responds to a specific environment. A site for the work needs to be found in advance of the production. The thesis questions the value of creating artwork in isolation.

We discuss the target space pseudoduality in supersymmetric sigma models on symmetric spaces. We first consider the case where sigma models based on real compact connected Lie groups of the same dimensionality and give examples using three dimensional models on target spaces. We show explicit construction of nonlocal conserved currents on the pseudodual manifold. We then switch the Lie group valued pseudoduality equations to Lie algebra valued ones, which leads to an infinite number of pseudoduality equations. We obtain an infinite number of conserved currents on the tangent bundle of the pseudodual manifold. Since pseudoduality imposes the condition that sigma models pseudodual to each other are based on symmetric spaces with opposite curvatures (i.e. dual symmetric spaces), we investigate pseudoduality transformation on the symmetric space sigma models in the third chapter. We see that there can be mixing of decomposed spaces with each other, which leads to mixings of the following expressions. We obtain the pseudodual conserved currents which are viewed as the orthonormal frame on the pullback bundle of the tangent space of G tilde which is the Lie group on which the pseudodual model based. Hence we obtain the mixing forms of curvature relations and one loop renormalization group beta function by means of these currents. In chapter four, we generalize the classical construction of pseudoduality transformation to supersymmetric case. We perform this both by component expansion method on manifold M and by orthonormal coframe method on manifold SO(M). The component method produces the result that pseudoduality tranformation is not invertible at all points and occurs from all points on one manifold to only one point where riemann normal coordinates valid on the second manifold. Torsion of the sigma model on M must vanish while it is nonvanishing on M tilde, and curvatures of the manifolds must be constant and the same because of anticommuting grassmann numbers. We obtain the similar results with the classical case in orthonormal coframe method. In case of super WZW sigma models pseudoduality equations result in three different pseudoduality conditions; flat space, chiral and antichiral pseudoduality. Finally we study the pseudoduality tansformations on symmetric spaces using two different methods again. These two methods yield similar results to the classical cases with the exception that commuting bracket relations in classical case turns out to be anticommuting ones because of the appearance of grassmann numbers. It is understood that constraint relations in case of non-mixing pseudoduality are the remnants of mixing pseudoduality. Once mixing terms are included in the pseudoduality the constraint relations disappear.

The Internet is evolving, both in form and function, at a rate which is becoming increasingly difficult to match. Through constructs such as The Internet of Things, our consumption of digital information and knowledge is slowly moving away from being primarily consumed through screens to one in which we are generators of data by interacting with the objects and spaces which surrounds us. Thus, the Internet is no longer a space we visit but rather the space we live in and experience in our daily lives. The Digital Public Space, a concept based on the democratisation of privately held knowledge, is intrinsically connected to the notions of Internet, especially around its delivery and reach. Whilst the two are arguably separated by different social and political motivational aspirations as the internet evolves so must our consideration of the Digital Public Space. The AHRC Creative Exchange research project was set to explore the myriad of potentials of the Digital Public Space from understanding, facilitation and creation of digital public spaces to privacy and ethical concerns. I approached this space by considering how our own physicality means that there will always be a tangible aspect to the consumption and production of digital information; a duality in existence which needs to be understood in order to design better experiences. In particular, I am concerned with the characteristics and particularities around the creation processes involved in the design of mixed-reality objects and spaces which might contribute to the Digital Public Space in the context imposed by the juxtaposition of the digital and the physical worlds. Therefore, this research presents the methodological framework required for the understanding of such design processes with a clear focus on the interactions and affordances mixed-reality artefacts make use of in their designs. Through the exploration of five different research projects, resulting from collaborative design-led research, conducted in close partnership between academia and the creative industries, I extract, rationalise and present ideas, individually, in order to present research insights for the design and construction of mixed-reality artefacts. The key aspects of which are summarised in a set of guidelines, taking the shape of a manifesto, to serve prospective designers in the production of mixed-reality artefacts.

Coworking Spaces represent a global fast-growing trend which was able to gain momentum in research and academia, yet until now the fundamental role of IT within the coworking space ecosystem proves to be a rather unexplored topic for researchers and academia. Therefore, this research is about the role of space and information technologies (such as software, hardware, and more IT-related services) within CWSs; hence about the relation and interplay among those technologies, the involved actors and the physical environment in which the act of coworking takes place.

This thesis will focus on designing a space for the "spirit"; the nonphysical, or invisible emanations of a person that compose human nature. My interest is in designing a space, universally appealing in effect, that will enhance the human spirit and raise the awareness of our ability to transcend, and create a connection with others and self.¹ This thesis will create a place that heightens or speaks to an "alternative state of mind in which one is overcome by, or perceives the presence, insight, or action of forces beyond self-limited consciousness.² This thesis design will investigate and create a place that allows people to connect with their individual spirit. This space will provide a place that appeals to all views of spirituality so that visitors will explore and enhance their own definitions of spirit, gaining a deeper understanding of a universal humanity. ¹ Barrie, Tom, Julio Bermudez, Anat Geva, and Randall Teal. I often ponder over the physical limitations of everyday life. The sense of my body being trapped in the here and now, in being able to imagine so much and experience so little in comparison, and the downhearted disappointment of it all. In my Master project Space + Poetics at Konstfack (2010) I have confronted these issues. I have tried to find ways to bridge the gap between the physical place and the mental space. I strive to create escapes from our rigid surroundings – to create little holes in the everyday where the void creates content.

In certain types of complex historical buildings an in-between space was often present. This space was a consequence of something more important such as another room, a necessary movement or the thickness of the wall. This thesis aims to investigate this kind of space, mellanrum, on an interior and urban scale. The case studies are Stockholm slott, Rosersbergs slott and Gripsholms slott, the rooms are documented in plan and with a portrait. The small island Riddarholmen is one of the oldest parts of Stockholm, mellanrum is here investigated on an urban scale, mainly in model. Most of the houses on Riddarholmen are owned by the Swedish state and are housing different courts, they need more space but extensions to the old houses are hard to do so a way of freeing space is to collect all the libraries on the island (five in total) in one common court library. In the design of this small institution mellanrum is investigated further and incorporated in a new building. of wood.

Earthships are buildings which are constructed almost entirely of recycled materials and are built to be almost totally self sufficient through the recycling of rain water, the recycling of solar energy into electrical energy, passive solar techniques and sometimes the recycling of wind through turbines, also into electrical energy. This thesis draws out and demonstrates the logic that Earthship architecture emerges from and generates amongst its inhabitants. This logic, it is argued, can be characterized as containing elements of the baroque and Neo-baroque. It is a logic of following and interfacing the elements (earth, sun, wind, rain) that folds them into itself. In such a space it is impossible to delineate any strict division between the inside and outside of a house. The inside becomes a node, interval, or point of passage of the outside and domestic life emerges from a complex and dynamic rhythmic arrangement with the outside. Such a space emerges from and generates a new sense of nature as cycles, flows, and interconnections which are fundamentally inseparable from architecture, technology or domestic life. This thesis also argues that to properly understand Earthships it is necessary to draw out the sense of historical and natural catastrophe that has impacted their origin and present incarnations.

My project creates spaces for common use, reclaiming a little left-over piece of the city landscape. The mobile culture house unfolds and fragments in interaction with the places it encounters. It is flexible, multi-use and respectful of the surrounding environment. I have attempted to answer to questions concerning the development of the city of Stockholm in times of escalating urbanization and galloping housing shortage when unreflected densification risks to erase diversity, cause gentrification and reinforce segregation. I have investigated the existing flora of small, urban grass-root, resistance movements and I have added my own contribution to the set.

Transformative Space is a project positioned between the field of architecture and textile design. In this work the definition of space focuses on the experience of space in contrast to defining space as static shape or built enclosure. Due to the pliability and ambiguous materiality of textiles, textile space proposes a more instable logic which constitutes the relation between the individual and architecture in form of the solid. Throughout the material exploration ambiguity, light and inside outside are used as major place holders to develop woven textiles. The material is configured in a large scale structure as an “open system” open for the user to transform or define. “Blurred Surfaces”, “Extended Layers”, “Float Free” and Transformative Structures” are results of design explorations in this research which relate both to spatial as well as material scale. The work proposes different examples of ambiguous structures whereof one is further developed into an installation in the exhibition context.

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2005.
Includes bibliographical references.
A study was carried out to explore methods for improving the understanding and practice of design as a means of self-discovery, intersubjective dialogue and cultural development. Using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a laboratory and case study, a series of interventions and observations were conducted and recorded. Key concerns were the dialectical relationships between individuals and organization, freedom and language, play and structure, dialogue and community, design and technological systems. The hypothesis was that the pervasive effect of post-structural thinking in architectural theory and design education have created an environment that does not adequately prepare students to explore, engage and communicate personal values in their work, particularly in relation to the immediate contexts in which they find themselves. It also posited that an emphasis on technological systems rather than tectonic and social skill building becomes an additional obstacle to dialogical self-expression and cultural development. The indeterminacy of this hypothesis lead to a series of participatory design proposals with the intent to impact the community context of the Institute.
(cont.) One of these proposals, a small cafe, was structurally implemented and became a reference point for observation and theoretical analysis. The research concluded that architecture studies would be invigorated by embracing the specific and multiple structures of communication that architecture offers - embodied in the concept of symbolic action. These studies should also include the practice of dialogue: personal, conflictual and poetic self-expression as means of contextual transformation and transcendence. This process was best encapsulated in the notion of design as rhetoric - a play of actors engaging contextual structure, personal values and a belief in human communality.

This inquiry examines the lived experience of a believing Christian seeking authentic space on a secular academic course. It has come about as a result of an experience of both angst and transformation leading to the focus of this inquiry which is looking to answer the question of: 'How does a committed Christian with a belief in foundational truth, authentically relate and integrate their faith and new found knowledge in counselling practice and research on a secular training course'? Research literature acknowledges a growing interest and demand for further debate and research in the domain of integration of faith and psychotherapy and practice, where evidence points to there being a gap in training. Integration is acknowledged as problematic but specific challenges are noted as not being so well researched. The study is written in the form of a paradigmatic case study where the researcher is also the researched. It embraces a pluralistic methodology incorporating aspects of personal narrative, interpretive phenomenological analysis and tacit understanding as advocated by Polanyi. This inquiry explores both the problem encountered and the solution found. The problem was epistemological, that of a personal belief in foundational truth, the central tenet of the Christian faith and the challenge of co-habiting a secular relativist space. The purpose and goal of this inquiry is to both show and tell the process of integration, which allowed authentic space to emerge both personally and theoretically. An exploration of a personal epiphany of 'heart and mind' integration is pivotal in this inquiry. The key finding which made integration possible was the discovery of and engagement with both Michael Polanyi and C.S. Lewis and their progressive theories of knowledge: theories which embrace both fundamental Christian belief and the fundamental values and theories taught in the dialogue of both person-centred and psychodynamic approaches. This study and reflexive analysis has created the basis of a body of work, which can be used as a means of support for Christian trainees who encounter similar challenges in academic spaces and in practice in this postmodern age. It can also be of benefit to trainers and course designers and counselling practitioners as they engage and dialogue with this re emerging phenomena. Finally this inquiry can be the catalyst for further research and development in order to begin to bridge the epistemological gap encountered in training.

A thesis project that investigates layeredness in space in a museum for sketches on Djurgården in Stockholm. The thesis tries to explore spatial overlay, and how space can be created with the intention of achieving layered qualities. References of layered space have been gathered and investigated in order to further the analysis. The program of the sketch museum corresponds with the thesis question and is intended to act as another driving factor in the investigation.

Game-space presents the development of a student game-hall on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. The architectural theory that guided the development asserts that an intelligent translation of a building's physical and conceptual needs into a matrix of well defined layers provides a strong foundation for the creation of a cultivated space.

This thesis is an investigation of a liberative space and an attempt to design one. The term Liberative Space is defined by Plummer. as the kind of endowment [that] provides the frameworks in which others can fly. In such a space people are inspired to take personal action and choose their own experience. For example, there is more than one path leading from one to the other end of a building. One path is flooded with light, the other opens the special view, the third is shortcut where you are sure not to meet anybody.... Contrary to this would be a highly controlled hierarchical space. Liberative space should not be mistaken for a chaotic one because its freedom is rooted in the power to make spontaneous choices about mutuality. Liberative space can include a hierarchical one as the possible choice. The maker of a liberative space is going to be more of a composer than a musician, a playwright than an actor, a choreographer than a dancer. This means that the creativity of an architect is not going towards the highly controlled and finished spaces, but spaces that offer opportunities to discover, change, redefine. These ideas are explored in a design of a high school.

This project investigates an idea of adoptable space as opposed to adaptable space of generic felexibility. An Experimental Performing Arts Center on a site in Downtown Chattanooga is used as a vehicle to define the nature of space, which offers itself for an architectural adoption. Simple elements like platforms, walls, doors, windows and curtains are interpreted in a new way and can be used experimentally to let a theater play happen.

As an architectural language, what elements and systems constitute a work of architecture? They are the structural system, enclosure system, circulation system, functional requirements, context, light, views, proportion, scale, forms, cultural characteristics, color and many others. In this thesis, I focus on the structural system, the spatial organization and quality of light with a view to how they contribute to the identity of spaces. the vehicle of my study is an Environmental Learning Center, for Franklin County, Virginia. The building design enploys two different structural systems in two parts of the building, arranging dissimilar spatial organizations in building sections. Various enclosure materials are used to exhibit distinct light qualities. Design is not only to satisfy functional needs, but to architecturally determine spatial differentiation, which accordingly generates the identity of spaces.

This thesis is an exploration of the historical, societal, and individual as well as material factors that contribute to the constructing of space, and in particular, sacred space. With the idea that the making of sacred space is simultaneously a material construct and a construct of the mind, both postures were considered and studied throughout the research and design process of the thesis.

I create process-oriented, mixed media work in an intuitive manner. I develop compositions by choosing from a wide range of materials and media. I have established a visual vocabulary that I use formally and, on occasion, symbolically to express my personal thoughts. My prints are primarily collagraphs pulled from plates that are constructed using foam, rope, sticks, cardboard, or screen prints. My fiber works are mixed media and often combine soft and stiff fabrics, dyes, pigments, embroidery, quilting, and screen printing. At times I find ways to integrate hard, rigid materials such as kiln-formed and sandblasted glass into my fiber pieces. My pieces tend to be intimately sized and detail oriented, requiring an up close and personal look from the viewer.

By altering the outward appearance of the gallery walls, I address the hidden inner temperaments and characteristics of these seemingly benign facades. Architectural rubble impacts with the gallery space in imagined collisions, exposing and distorting its hidden inner workings and structures. Sometimes my walls grow so fat that they need immediate and temporary structural solutions. They may even slump over in a pathetic heap under their own perceived mass.Using everyday wall building materials like 2x4s and drywall, or even harvesting the material directly from the gallery, I anthropomorphize the surface of the space. Rather than the architecture receding into the background in the service of art, the gallery walls break free of the architecture and become the art
