Анотація:

Neste artigo busca-se analisar a configuração de bacias hidrográficas assimétricas na Serra do Espinhaço Meridional pormeio da organização espacial de arquivos fluviais e de índices morfométricos, adotando-os como instrumentos deinvestigação de processos de migração preferencial de cursos d´água sob controle litoestrutural e tectônico. Osprocedimentos foram baseados no levantamento, interpretação e espacialização de níveis e sequências deposicionais, bem como no cálculo dos índices Fator de Simetria Topográfica Transversal (FSTT) e Fator de Assimetria de Bacia de Drenagem (FABD). A maior parte dos vales apresenta níveis deposicionais escalonados e isolados em contexto de encostas e que sinalizam processos de migração lateral de canais para leste sob forte influência do nível de base regional, refletindo na configuração de bacias hidrográficas assimétricas. Os índices confirmam esses resultados, o que pode ter relação com omergulho das rochas proterozoicas e com a dinâmica tectônica regional quaternária. Nos fundos de vales, por sua vez, os arquivos fluviais são bem mais preservados, mas o seu pareamento em ambas as margens não sinaliza a continuidade da migração preferencial de canais para leste, indicando a estabilização dos níveis de base no Holoceno

Анотація:

RESUMO:O objetivo desse estudo é investigar as paleolinhas de costa presentes na plataforma continental sul de Alagoas. Devido à baixa contribuição de sedimentos continentais aportados pelos rios nesta plataforma continental, as feições de fundo formadas no último ciclo de variação do nível do mar não permitiram que estas fossem totalmente soterradas. Assim, para investigar essas feições foi elaborado um modelo batimétrico a partir das Folhas de Bordos da Diretoria de Hidrografia e Navegação (DHN) da Marinha do Brasil. Posteriormente foram identificadas e mapeadas as principais anomalias no relevo (elevação ou depressão). As principais feições identificadas na plataforma continental de Alagoas foram três conjuntos de arrecifes submersos alinhados e paralelos à linha de costa, identificados a -25m, -15m e -5m, e os paleovales de Maceió, Jequiá-Jacarecica e Coruripe que ficaram evidentes no modelo batimétrico. Com isso, concluímos que a origem dos paleovales está relacionada ao último máximo glacial quando os rios escavaram a plataforma continental, e a formação dos arrecifes indicam os períodos de estabilização do nível do mar que correspondem às antigas linhas de costa.Palavras-chave: Nível do Mar; Recifes; Sedimentos Marinhos; Vales Incisos; Zona Costeira. ABSTRACT:The objective of this study is to investigate the paleo coastlines present in the southern continental shelf of Alagoas. Due to the low contribution of continental sediments contributed by the rivers in this continental shelf, the bottom features formed in the last cycle of sea level variation, did not allow that they were completely buried. Thus, to investigate these features, a bathymetric model was elaborated from the Border Sheets of the Hydrographic and Navigation Department (DHN) of the Brazilian Navy. Subsequently, the main anomalies in the relief (elevation or depression) were identified and mapped. The main features identified in the continental shelf of Alagoas were three sets of submerged reefs aligned and parallel to the coastline were identified at -25m, -15m and -5m and the paleo valleys of Maceió, Jequiá-Jacarecica and Coruripe that were evident in the bathymetric model. We conclude that the origin of the paleo valleys is related to the last glacial maximum when the rivers excavated the continental shelf and the formation of the reefs indicate the periods of stabilization of the sea level that correspond to paleo coastlines.Keywords: Sea Level; Reefs; Marine Sediments; Incised Valleys; Coastal Zone.

Members of the genus Diporiphora are slender perching agamid lizards from Australasia, with a conservative morphologyand some outstanding taxonomic issues. Here we assess morphological variation in the morphologically similar D. pin-dan, D. valens, and D. winneckei from the western deserts of Australia. A reassessment of morphological differences thatincluded the presence or absence of a gular fold, revealed D. pindan to be much more widely distributed than previouslythought, occurring as far south as the northern Pilbara and east to the Tanami Desert. Examination of D. valens specimensrevealed a north-south split within the Pilbara, with specimens conspecific with the types from the Hamersley Range inthe southern Pilbara, whereas recently collected specimens from the Chichester and Roebourne regions in the northernPilbara differ morphologically, and are described as a new species. Examination of the type of D. winneckei and topotypicmaterial indicates that populations referable to this species are confined to the eastern arid zone. The isolated far westernpopulation of ‘D. winneckei’ from the Carnarvon Basin differs in morphology from the eastern arid zone D. winneckei andis described as a new species. The western arid zone ‘D. winneckei’ is also morphologically distinctive from the easternarid zone D. winneckei and is described as a new species. We also redescribe D. pindan, D. valens, and D. winneckei, and return Caimanops amphiboluroides to Diporiphora based on the results of previous genetic studies.

The article attests the presence of the genus Rucervus in the paleontological record of Europe and presents the description of new species of large-sized deer Rucervus radulescui sp. nov. from the Early Pleistocene of Valea Grăunceanului (Southern Romania) and Rucervus gigans sp. nov. from the late Early Pleistocene of Apollonia-1 (Greece). The described cervid species represent two different evolutionary radiations of Rucervus that are grouped into the extinct subgenus Arvernoceros that represents the northern evolutionary radiation and the nominotypical subgenus that is regarded as the southern evolutionary radiation and represented today by only one species Rucervus duvaucelii. The evolutionary radiation and dispersals of Rucervus are regarded in the paleobiogeographic context of faunal exchanges between southeastern Europe, Caucasus, and Near East during the Early Pleistocene and the westward dispersal of early hominins in Eurasia.

Abstract. Romania's significant German (Saxon) heritage is perfectly conserved in southern Transylvania, where Saxons arrived in the mid-1100s from the Rhine and Moselle river regions. Highly respected for their skill and talent, this population succeeded in gaining administrative autonomy, a feat practically unrivalled through a feudal Europe of absolute monarchies. The result of almost nine centuries of existence of the Saxon (German) community in southern Transylvania is still visible today in a stunning melting pot of cultural and architectural heritage, unique in Europe. Within the framework of the project “3d Past, Living & virtual visiting European World Heritage” the set of 7 villages (Biertan, Câlnic, Dârjiu, Prejmer, Saschiz, Valea Viilor, Viscri) listed by UNESCO since 1993, have been studied in detail. Strategies for maintenance and conservation have been analysed in order to contribute to the awareness and preservation of the principles of authenticity and integrity of those sites.

South African companies need to become increasingly competitive and productive in the global economy while complying with the statutory requirements of a range of labour legislation. Implementation of the requirements of the Employment Equity Act is likely to result in greater diversity within companies and increasing representation of different race groups at all levels. As management practices may need to be tailored to harness, for competitive advantage, the diverse values that employees bring to the workplace, it was the objective of the present exploratory study to measure similarities and differences in values for managers in the Southern Sun Group, a prominent hotel group in South Africa. The methodology involved obtaining a convenience sample of 68 managers from three race groups, and having them complete the VSM94 instrument (Hofstede, 1994) with the aim of investigating similarities and differences in values between such groups. The findings indicate that managers in the sample evidence both similar and different values along the Hofstede (1994) values dimensions. The study addresses the implications for the Southern Sun Group of managing an increasingly diverse workforce. Where differences in value orientations are apparent, recommendations are made to the management of the Southern Sun Group as to how management practices could be adapted to effectively respond to these differences.

AbstractIn this manuscript, I present an estimation of the rate of decline in atmospheric radiocarbon and the amplitude of its seasonal cycle for the past four decades for the northern and southern hemispheres, and forecast the time required to reach pre-1950 levels (i.e. Δ14C<0‰). Using a set of 30 different exponential smoothing state-space models, the time series were decomposed into their error, trend, and seasonal components, choosing the model that best represented the observed data. According to the best model, the rate of change in Δ14C has decreased considerably since the 1970s and reached values below −5‰ per year since 2005. Overall, the time-series showed larger rates of radiocarbon decline in the northern than in the southern hemisphere, and relatively stable seasonal cycles for both hemispheres. A forecast of the exponential smoothing models predicts that radiocarbon values will reach pre-1950 levels by 2021 in the northern hemisphere with 20% probability, and by around 2035 in the southern hemisphere. However, at regional levels radiocarbon concentrations have already reached pre-1950 levels in several industrialized regions and cities around the world as a consequence of fossil-fuel emissions.

Анотація:

Basic principles of the US Declaration of Independence (as the example of the classical liberalism implementation) and main arguments of Southern advocates of slavery of antebellum period are considered in the article. The views of John Calhoun and George Fitzhugh were analyzed. Their attempts to harmonize the institution of slavery with the very important for the American society principles of equality and liberty were examined by the author. Both of them considered slavery as the institution with civilizing properties that should prevail over the absence of liberty for African Americans. Such views were based on racism – advocates of slavery were refusing to concede the physical and intellectual equality of the enslaved African Americans and the descendants of European colonists. Fitzhugh’s main arguments for the preservation of slavery were the examples of the classical societies and states, specifically Ancient Athens and Rome, which had been reached the high level of the civilization development due to slavery. Calhoun’s and Fitzhugh’s attempts to defend the traditional social and economical mode of Southern States led them to the denial of main principles of Declaration of Independence.

Pandemonium hibernalis sp. nov., from a middle? Puercan (earliest Paleocene) locality in the upper Scollard Formation, Wintering Hills, southern Alberta, represents the second discovered occurrence of the enigmatic plesiadapiform primate Pandemonium Van Valen and the first from Canada. The holotype of Pandemonium hibernalis is the only known specimen of Pandemonium documented by multiple teeth from a single individual. Pandemonium hibernalis closely resembles the type species Pandemonium dis from Purgatory Hill, middle–late Puercan, Tullock Formation, Montana, but differs in having wider, more bunodont lower molar crowns and a more expanded posterior talonid lobe of m3, specializations suggesting enhanced capacity for crushing and grinding of soft food materials during mastication. Pandemonium hibernalis joins other recent discoveries in Alberta and elsewhere in the North American Western Interior in documenting a moderate radiation of basal plesiadapiforms that evolved unexpectedly early during primate evolution.

Purpose The purpose of the current study was to examine normative nasalance values in Vietnamese adult speakers with Southern dialect and to investigate the effects of vowels and tones on nasalance. Previous studies examining nasalance have been mainly conducted with Indo-European languages. Limited information on nasalance is available in tone languages other than Chinese. Furthermore, tone and vowel effects on nasalance scores in tone languages have not been fully examined. Method Nasalance scores of various speech stimuli including passages, syllables, and prolonged vowels were obtained from Vietnamese-speaking adults with Southern dialect ( M age = 23 years) using a nasometer (KayPENTAX 6450). Results The average nasalance scores of Southern Vietnamese adult speakers were 24.16%, 38.17%, and 70.03% for the oral, oral–nasal, and nasal passages, respectively. Southern Vietnamese speakers produced the highest nasalance scores on the vowel /a/, followed by /i/ and /u/. Nasalance scores of stimuli produced with the falling and restricted tone were significantly lower than those produced with the other tones. Conclusions The normative nasalance values of the current study will contribute as a reference index for the Vietnamese language. The effects of vowels and tones can also provide insight into the development of nasalance testing stimuli and for characterizing nasalance values across languages.

Economic valuation of marine ecosystem services is strongly anchored within the logic of Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). An inventory and critical assessment of marine valuation studies was conducted within the European Union funded Policy-oriented marine Environmental Research for the Southern European Seas (PERSEUS) research project ( http://www.perseus-net.eu/ ) and this information was fed into a suitable, spatially explicit valuation database, namely Valuation database for Marine Ecosystem Services of Southern European Seas (V-MESSES), with the objective of providing monetary values for Southern European Seas (SES) to be used in cost–benefit and cost-effectiveness applications. At present, the database contains 93 studies offering over 110 value estimates for four categories and 20 subcategories of marine ecosystem services covering all regions of Mediterranean and Black Sea. The database enables so far the estimation of the aggregated value of all ecosystem services. However, the selection of appropriate, policy relevant value estimates is not a simple and straightforward task, since several conditions should be met in order to conduct effective and efficient value transfers. Bearing in mind the above limitations, tentative reference value estimates are compiled from the V-MESSES database for a number of coastal and marine ecosystem services, although not all service categories are covered sufficiently.

Pentecostal missionizing efforts reflect a spirituality that is characterized by (1) a high value placed on religious experience; (2) a preference for oral communication; (3) spontaneity in personal conduct as well as in corporate worship; (4) otherworldliness as the root of cultural pessimisim, ecclesiastical separateness, belief in spirits and demons, and the eschatological urgency of the return of Christ; and (5) biiblical authority, often expressed in a hermeneutic of biblical precedent. In the final analysis, Pentecostal spirituality is a lifestyle no longer limited to the Pentecostal churches.

Abstract Thinning options on southern pine plantations are often evaluated under the implicit assumption that forestland is treated as a profit center, with stumpage as the final product. Stumpage values might not adequately reflect the end-product content and value of trees, however. An indirectmethod, the residual value approach, is an alternative stumpage valuation technique and is illustrated in this paper. This approach values an end product of stumpage (e.g., lumber, sawlogs, or chips) and subtracts conversion and handling costs to arrive at an estimate of stumpage value. Consequently,residual values tend to be directly related to piece size. When timber management regimes are evaluated using residual values, optimal regimes are consistent with results using traditional, direct valuation approaches. Optimal management regimes will tend to have at least one thinning anda rotation age of around 30 years. Since the residual value approach employed in this study recognizes manufacturing, transportation, and harvesting costs, it may provide a more realistic valuation of thinning options, particularly as end products or processing and handling technologies andcosts change. The red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), was found for the first time in China in Yangcheng and Xinshui counties, Shanxi province in 1998, and in Hebei province in 1999. The beetle mostly attacks the oil pine Pinus tabulaeformis Carriére. By 2003 the beetle was found in 85 counties of three provinces in north China and the area of infested pine forests covered more than 700,000 ha. The elevation above sea level of forests infested is more than 800 m. The beetles most frequently attack trees on hilltops and at the forest edge, fewer attacks occur in the centre of the stand. This correlates with the damage done to the trees by wind or man. Weak and dying trees are more vulnerable to attack than healthy ones. The most attractive breeding sites are fresh stumps. The population density of the beetles is higher in the forests on northern slopes than on southern slopes. Most of the bores in the trunk are less than 0.5 m above ground; the galleries are found also on roots.

In 1928, Harold H. Scudder first demonstrated that Herman Melville's story Benito Cereno had been closely based on chapter 18 of Amasa Delano's Narrative of Voyage and Travels in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres (1817). On the basis of the two texts' similarities, Scudder argued that Melville's story was mere reworking of Delano's account. Scudder's argument clearly overlooked Melville's ability to reframe the story in an ironic narration or to invest the details of Delano's plot with new meaning; nevertheless, readers of Delano's narrative might be amazed at how closely Melville's story follows that account. In addition to the basic sequence of events, some of the most artful and significant details of Benito Cereno seem to have taken their cues from the original story: Delano's offense at Cereno's incivility, his frustration that the valet stays constantly by Cereno's side, and his surprise that the Africans' unruly conduct is justified as the “sport of boys” are some of the materials Melville might well have found in the 1817 recollections.

The relevance of the problem is caused with the lack of comparative studies on the problem of emigration attitudes and their predictors in the context of the cultural characteristics of Kazakhstan regions. The article analyzes the research conducted, the purpose of which was to compare the severity of emigration attitudes determined by the individual values of Kazakhs depending on the region of residence, and the following hypotheses are put forward: 1. The degree of expressing emigration attitudes among the Kazakh youth from the northern regions is higher compared to the same of the southern regions; 2. The meta-values of Preservation and Self-overcoming are more signifi cant for the young people of Southern Kazakhstan (in comparison with Northern Kazakhstan); 3. The emigration attitudes of the youth in Northern Kazakhstan are associated with the meta-values of Willingness to change and Self-affi rmation; 4. The emigration attitudes of the youth of Southern Kazakhstan are associated with the metavalues of Preservation and Self-Overcoming. The study participants, including young people (N=364) aged from 17 to 35, where 78% (285) is represented by women, were examined using such methods as the “Scale of migration attitudes” (S.A. Kuznetsova, I.Yu. Kuznetsov, A.V. Feshchenko), modifi ed into the “Scale of emigration attitudes”, which allows to identify the degree of severity of emigration attitudes; PVQ-21-ESS7 that is the version of a questionnaire for measuring individual values (Sh. Schwartz), aimed at studying the signifi cance of values, and the method of multiple linear regression analysis, the Student›s t-test. It is revealed that the Kazakhs of the northern regions of Kazakhstan (compared with the Kazakhs of Southern Kazakhstan) have more pronounced emigration attitudes, the importance of the Self-affi rmation metavalue is higher, emigration attitudes are positively associated with the Willingness to change meta-value; among the Kazakhs of Southern Kazakhstan (in comparison with the Kazakhs of Northern Kazakhstan), the meta-value of Preservation is of great importance, emigration attitudes are negatively associated with the meta-value of Self-overcoming; the meta-value of Self-overcoming is equally signifi cant for both the Kazakhs of the northern and the southern regions; emigration attitudes of the Kazakhs of both the southern and northern regions are negatively associated with the meta-value of Preservation and are positively associated with the meta-value of Self-Affi rmation. The obtained research results can be used in forecasting the migration behavior of Kazakh youth, as well as in the process of realizing a program “Rukhani Zhangyru – Public Consciousness Modernization” in Kazakhstan.

By studying the content values of classical drama, we can feel the beauty of Tuong art performance and understand more about this type of art. The content values of Tuong art performance have been interested in many researchers; however, they only stopped at studying Vietnamese Tuong generally or specific in some works such as Kim Thach ky duyen, Son hau… The researchers haven’t been a focus on exploiting the issues of the content values of Tuong art performance in the Southern area in general. So in this article, we want to have a general view of the content values of Tuong art performance in this area. The content values of Tuong art performance in the Southern area before 1945 was divided into three following parts: Elevating the values of loyalty, filial piety, virtuous wife, benevolence and righteousness; Criticizing the moral degeneracy of people in the society; Prasing the loyal love in the troubled times. But, because of material limitations, we just studied the content of Tuong in general based on existing documents, this article can not avoid shortcomings and limitations.

Ethnobotanical studies have shown that many wild plant species are sporadically consumed alongside regular food sources in developing countries. Many plants of wild and semi-wild origin are consumed in the remote parts of southern Ethiopia. Dietetic values of Ethiopia’s non-crop food plants, though important in prevention of malnutrition and contribution to food security, remains shrouded for lack of chemical information. The chemical composition of popularly used wild edibles in Hamar and Konso (Xonso) of southern Ethiopia was examined. The most preferred 15 semi-wild and wild edible plants were selected using a mix of standard ethnobotanical field methods. Edible parts of target plants were collected with local participants, lyophilized and analyzed for proximate composition, amino acids, minerals and antinutritional factors. The wild edibles constituted good amounts of nutrients essential in human diet. Green leafy vegetables (GLVs) gave 1.5-5.8% ether extractives and total mineral composition of 12.5%-25.6%; Ca being highest (1100 - 3419 mg %) and exceptionally high for Justicia ladanoides (6177 mg %). Fe, Mg, Mn and Zn ranged from 11.7-23.14, 175-2049, 3.4-9.9 and 1.2-3.3 mg %, respectively. All GLVs contained ≥20% protein, highest in Coccinia grandis (36.3%). The latter species and Trigonella foenum-graecum yielded high lysine level. Anti-nutrients of concern include phenolics (158-1564 mg %) and tannins (448-2254 mg %) in GLVs and phenolics (1997mg %) and tannins (6314 mg %) in Ximenia caffra fruits. Total oxalates in mg % were high in Amaranthus graecizans (14067), Celosia argentea (12706) and Portulaca quadrifida (10162). Bulk consumption of monotype edible plant part in one meal may lead to nutritional and health impairment. However, traditional processing methods lower most of the anti-nutritionals and their respective risks. New food composition tables that integrate indigenous knowledge and nutritional content of the semi-wild and wild edibles are recommended. Wild edibles can be considered to improve livelihood security and reduce malnutrition in tune with the Millennium Development Goals aimed at reducing poverty and hunger.
