Paul Rudolph worked at the Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute from 1963 to 1991. Despite not being one of his most popular designs at that time, recent publications have revalued this work by evidencing the coherence between thought and design in a case of large-scale construction. This new campus allowed Rudolph to conceive an 'open work' that ranged from its urban planning to its construction. Other new universities addressed this way of proceeding, but Rudolph was a pioneer in his land in the approach of a design system based on a unique strategy. Thanks to documentary sources of earlier research, this work graphically reconstructs the Arts and Humanities building, the first group to be built and considered the germ of the project. The compositional pattern and the use of a prefabricated concrete block are revealed as basic tools which allow the design flexibility. In the Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute, Rudolph focused his attention on the design process under the belief that it would become a product itself, thus joining the ideology of the third-generation architects.

This article discusses how Singapore is amassing a brain trust to compensate for resources that nature didn’t provide to it. CREATE or “Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise” is one of the most ambitious projects of Singapore’s National Research Foundation. CREATE seeks to unite Singapore’s universities with world-class research institutions to study issues ranging from urban planning to medical treatment. The organization has partnerships with 10 foreign universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Technical University of Munich, Cambridge University, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. There are five research groups in CREATE’s partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The research areas are infectious diseases, environmental sensing and modeling, biosystems and micromechanics, urban mobility, and low-energy electronic systems. The University of California, Berkeley, has two research programs with CREATE. One aims to improve the efficiency of buildings in the tropics, and the other is working on raising the electrical output of photovoltaic devices.

Adrien has a PhD from Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (both MA, USA) in biomedical engineering and biophysics, with a specific focus on cardiovascular devices, fiber optic sensing and optical coherence tomography. After his PhD, he led technical developments in an internal venture at Philips Research (Eindhoven, Netherlands) to develop devices with integrated optical sensors and brought this technology from benchtop prototypes to in vivo human studies. In addition to his responsibilities at Echopoint Medical (London, UK) where he is Chief Technology Officer, Adrien is also is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at University College London (London, UK), where he leads the interventional devices group with a vision to develop novel methods for performing physiological measurements and imaging with minimally invasive devices. He has over 52 patent applications and granted patents.

The author, Chairman of Omokhodion Associates Ltd and Omokhodion Group, has received his academic degrees in architecture and city planning from the University of Science and Technology Kumasi, Ghana; the Athens Center of Ekistics, Athens, Greece; Yale University, New Haven, CO, USA ; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA; and the University of Lagos, Nigeria. In his long career, he has held key posts as Technical Officer in Training and as architect in the Federal Ministry of Works & Housing; as Physical Planning Assistant to Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, and has been director and chief designer of major architectural, landscape, urban design and urban planning projects in Nigeria at a broad range of scales. He has been a member of the Landuse and Allocation Committee, Bendel State; the Presidential Committee on the Accelerated Development of Abuja; the UNESCO Commission for Nigeria; Director of the Western Textile Mills Ltd; and is currently a member on the Panel on the Reorganization of NNPC. Dr Omokhodion is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the World Society for Ekistics. The text that follows is a slightly edited version of a paper presented at the international symposion on "Globalization and Local Identity, " organized jointly by the World Society for Ekistics and the University of Shiga Prefecture in Hikone, Japan, 19-24 September, 2005.

Studying past examples of successful technical communication may offer insight into strategies that worked with technologies and audiences in an earlier time. This article examines the texts documenting a controversy before and during the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. Ellen Swallow Richards, chemist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Bertha Honore Palmer, president of the Fair's Board of Lady Managers, had distinctly different visions of how cooking technology should be presented. Palmer invited Richards to create a Model Kitchen in the Woman's Building, but Richards wanted to avoid gendering the new knowledge of nutrition and she fought to control her exhibit. The multimedia Richards used in her resulting Rumford Kitchen exhibit reminds us that sometimes an entertaining but familiar atmosphere might be the best way to introduce threatening new knowledge and technology, particularly to our increasingly international and intergenerational audiences.

AbstractThis article explores an early computer algebra system called MACSYMA – a repository of automated non-numeric mathematical operations developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from the 1960s to the 1980s, to help mathematicians, physicists, engineers and other mathematical scientists solve problems and prove theorems. I examine the extensive paper-based training materials that were produced alongside the system to create its users. Would-be users were told that the system would free them from the drudgery of much mathematical labour. However, this ‘freedom’ could only be won by adapting to a highly disciplined mode of problem solving with a relatively inflexible automated assistant. In creating an automated repository of mathematical knowledge, MACSYMA developers sought to erase its social context. However, looking at the training literature, we see that the social operates everywhere, only recoded. This article uses the paper-based training materials to uncover the codes of conduct – both social and technical – that coordinated between the users, developers and machines that constituted the system.

ArgumentThis paper is the first part of a two-part examination of computer modeling practice and philosophy. It discusses electrical engineer Jay Forrester's work on Industrial Dynamics, later called System Dynamics. Forrester developed Industrial Dynamics after being recruited to the newly-established School of Industrial Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which had been seeking a novel pedagogical program for management for five years before Forrester's arrival. We argue that Industrial Dynamics should be regarded in light of this institutional context. Unlike economics, as well as operations research and management science (twin fields which were also gaining traction at that time), Industrial Dynamics was not meant to be applied by mathematicians and technical specialists in consultation with managers, but by managers themselves. This concern shifted the emphasis in modeling from the specialist act of analysis of a crucial problem to the managerial act of choosing which problems were crucial and developing effective policies around them.

Opening in 1976 with the exhibition, “Through the Looking Glass”, the Museum of Holography (MOH) emphasized from the beginning the importance of artistic holography with the inclusion of several holograms by artists whose primary practice was holography, articulating for the first time a distinction between artists, scientists and technicians. While the scientific and engineering principles underlying the technology could educate a public, holograms made by artists provided the visual syntax for the creative possibilities holography could offer. The MOH continued to encourage and support artists’ work throughout its history, amassing a large collection of holograms representative of the most prolific period of artistic activity from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museum (MIT Museum) in Boston acquired the entire archive including artistic and technical holograms as well as all related materials when the MOH closed in 1992. This paper will seek to explore whether the medium of holography within the visual arts has led to fine art museum acquisitions in the intervening decades.

No analysis of the history of the community college movement in Massachusetts can begin without a discussion of some of the peculiar features of higher education in that state. Indeed, the development of all public colleges in Massachusetts was, for many years, inhibited by the strength of the state’s private institutions (Lustberg 1979, Murphy 1974, Stafford 1980). The Protestant establishment had strong traditional ties to elite colleges—such as Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Williams, and Amherst—and the Catholic middle class felt equally strong bonds to the two Jesuit institutions in the state: Boston College and Holy Cross (Jencks and Riesman 1968, p. 263). If they had gone to college at all, most of Massachusetts’s state legislators had done so in the private system. Private college loyalties were not the only reasons for opposition to public higher education. Increased state spending for any purpose was often an anathema to many Republican legislators, and even most urban “machine” Democrats were unwilling to spend state dollars where the private sector appeared to work well enough (Stafford and Lustberg 1978). As late as 1950, the commonwealth’s public higher education sector served fewer than ten thousand students, just over 10 percent of total state enrollments in higher education. In 1960, public enrollment had grown to only 16 percent of the total, at a time when 59 percent of college students nationwide were enrolled in public institutions (Stafford and Lustberg 1978, p. 12). Indeed, the public sector did not reach parity with the private sector until the 1980s. Of the 15,945 students enrolled in Massachusetts public higher education in 1960, well over 95 percent were in-state students. The private schools, by contrast, cast a broader net: of the nearly 83,000 students enrolled in the private schools, more than 40 percent were from out of state (Organization for Social and Technical Innovation 1973). The opposition to public higher education began to recede in the late 1950s. Already by mid-decade, a large number of urban liberals had become members of the state legislature, and a new governor, Foster Furcolo, had been elected in 1956 on an activist platform.

Over the four decades of its history, decision support systems (DSSs) have moved from a radical movement that changed the way information systems were perceived in business, to a mainstream commercial information technology movement that all organizations engage. This interactive, flexible, and adaptable computer-based information system derives from two main areas of research: the theoretical studies of organizational decision making done at the Carnegie Institute in the 1950s and early 1960s as well as the technical work on interactive computer systems which was mainly performed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Keen & Morton, 1978). DSSs began due to the importance of formalizing a record of ideas, people, systems, and technologies implicated in this sector of applied information technology. But the history of this system is not precise due to the many individuals involved in different stages of DSSs and various industries while claiming to be pioneers of the system (Arnott & Pervan, 2005; Power, 2003). DSSs have become very sophisticated and stylish since these pioneers began their research. Many new systems have expanded the frontiers established by these pioneers yet the core and basis of the system remains the same. Today, DSSs are used in the finance, accounting, marketing, medical, as well as many other fields.

When Caxton Foster of the University of Massachusetts published his book Computer Architecture in 1970, this term was only just being recognized, reluctantly, by the computing community. This despite an influential paper published in 1964 by a group of IBM engineers on the “Architecture of the IBM System/360.” For instance, ACM’s “Curriculum 68” made no mention of the term in its elaborate description of the entire scope of computing as an academic discipline. Rather, in the late 1960s and well into the ’70s terms such as computer organization, computer structures, logical organization, computer systems organization, or, most blandly, computer design were preferred to describe computers in an abstract sort of way, independent of the physical (hardware) details. Thus a widely referenced paper by Michael Flynn of Stanford University, published in 1974, was titled “Trends and Problems in Computer Organization.” And Maurice Wilkes, even in the third edition of his Time-Sharing Computer Systems (1975) declined to use the term computer architecture. Yet, computer architecture as both an abstract way of looking at, understanding, and designing computers, and as a field of computer science emerged in the first years of the ’70s. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) founded a Technical Committee on Computer Architecture (TCCA) in 1970 to join the ranks of other specialist IEEE TCs. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) followed suit in 1971 by establishing, alongside other special-interest groups, the Special Interest Group on Computer Architecture (SIGARCH). And in 1974, the first of what came to be the annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) was held in Gainesville, Florida. By the end of the decade a series of significant textbooks and articles bearing the term computer architecture(s) had appeared. The reason for naming an aspect of the computer its “architecture” and the reason for naming an academic and research discipline “computer architecture” can be traced back to the mid-1940s and the paradigm-shaping unpublished reports by John von Neumann of the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton, and his collaborators, Arthur Burks and Herman Goldstine.

This paper investigates student acquisition of creative thinking skills in Solving Real Problems, a first year engineering design course in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This class was developed around a service-learning model where teams of two to six students worked with community-based partners to design products for use in their communities. Each team also had at least one faculty member and one teaching assistant working alongside the students as additional team members. Teaching techniques used in the class included multiple in-class idea generation exercises, individual and group assignments, concept, visualization, and fabrication instruction. There were thirteen students total enrolled in the class, two of whom were upperclassmen, one of whom was cross-registered from another university. The participants of this study are the ten first-year MIT students that took Solving Real Problems (2.00B) in spring semester 2007, consisting of five females and five males. At the end of the semester, eleven students total, including each of these ten first-year MIT students, participated in focus groups and responded affirmatively to the question “Thinking about Solving Real Problems in particular, do you think that the class improved your ability to be creative?” Thirty minute follow-up interviews with each student explored this improvement in creativity and make up the core data analyzed in this paper. Common themes discussed by students in relation to creativity include the interactive lecture and lab environment, the involvement of the professors and confidence and hands-on practice, suggesting a community of practice model of learning creativity in the classroom.

This paper describes two approaches to teaching engaging creative engineering design classes. Both of these classes have evolved over many years using feedback from annual class reviews. One is the computer-aided design class, CAD-EX, at the University of Tokushima (UT) in Japan, and the other is the introductory design and manufacturing class, 2.007, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Comparing these two classes conducted in two difference countries, this paper discusses how we created learning environments that engage students in a variety of design-related activities.

Abstract The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Commission on Industrial Productivity, in their report Made in America, found that six recurring weaknesses were hampering American manufacturing industries. The two weaknesses most relevant to product development were 1) technological weakness in development and production, and 2) failures in cooperation. The remedies to these weaknesses are considered the essential twin pillars of CE: 1) improved development process, and 2) closer cooperation. In the MIT report, it is recognized that total cooperation among teams in a CE environment is rare in American industry, while the majority of the design research in mathematically modeling CE has assumed total cooperation. In this paper, we present mathematical constructs, based on game theoretic principles, to model degrees of collaboration characterized by approximate cooperation, sequential decision making and isolation. The design of a pressure vessel and a passenger aircraft are included as illustrative examples.

In 2008, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) partnered together to develop project-based curricular material to be tested out in a new undergraduate course offering in KFUPM’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. This paper details some of the unique challenges to collaborating across countries and time zones, and the approaches the KFUPM-MIT team used to address these. These approaches have so far included the establishment of a shared vision for the project and the use of an array of technologies to facilitate distance communication. The paper concludes with a description of lessons learned that might be useful for future programs that plan to engage in international collaboration on design education.

A project to reduce frictional losses from natural gas engines is currently being carried out by a collaborative team from Waukesha Engine Dresser, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Colorado State University (CSU). This project is part of the Advanced Reciprocating Engine System (ARES) program led by the US Department of Energy. Previous papers have discussed the computational tools used to evaluate piston-ring/cylinder friction and described the effects of changing various ring pack parameters on engine friction. These computational tools were used to optimize the ring pack of a Waukesha VGF 18-liter engine, and this paper presents the experimental results obtained on the engine test bed. Measured reductions in friction mean effective pressure (FMEP) were observed with a low tension oil control ring (LTOCR) and a skewed barrel top ring (SBTR). A negative twist second ring (NTSR) was used to counteract the oil consumption increase due to the LTOCR. The LTOCR and SBTR each resulted in a ∼ 0.50% improvement in mechanical efficiency (ηmech).

This project is part of the Advanced Reciprocating Engine System (ARES) program led by the US Department of Energy. Changes in lubrication oil have been identified as a way to potentially help meet the ARES goal of developing a natural gas engine with 50% brake thermal efficiency. Previous papers have discussed the computational tools used to evaluate piston-ring/cylinder friction and described the effects of changing various lubrication oil parameters on engine friction. These computational tools were used to predict the effects of changing lubrication oil of a Waukesha VGF 18-liter engine, and this paper presents the experimental results obtained on the engine test bed. Measured reductions in friction mean effective pressure (FMEP) were observed with lower viscosity lubrication oils. Test oil LEF-H (20W) resulted in a ∼ 1.9% improvement in mechanical efficiency (ηmech) and a ∼ 16.5% reduction in FMEP vs. a commercial reference 40W oil. This improvement is a significant step in reaching the ARES goals.

Expectation management in product engineering design aims at setting achievable goals for both customers and designers, while leaving room for creativity and passion. This is especially challenging in the global workplace. Using an example of a design project, the Dental Headrest project (DHR), this paper reviews how expectations were managed in a successful, collaborative project between the University of Tokushima (UT) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The goal of the project was to design an innovative mechanism for the positioning a dental chair headrest so satisfy both the needs of a patient for comfort and a clinician for flexibility and access. The design team was formed with six students from the MIT MechE’s Precision Machine Design class, while the challenge proposed by a UT team of dentists and design engineers. The team followed a deterministic design procedure inducing understating the challenge and reviewing prior art, strategy and concept generation, detailed module design and fabrication and testing, culminating in presentation and documentation. Through the process was coordinated by online communication and collaborative working spaces which ensured real-time information transfer between the continents. The conclusion was a face-to-face meeting between the two institutions. This DHR project resulted in an innovative design of headrest adjusting mechanism that was implemented in a prototype. Moreover, the students, faculty and clinicians benefitted from the experience of innovative design collaboration in a multidisciplinary, global team.

Hydrostatic bearings are used in applications where surface speeds are low, or viscosities are insufficient to develop significant load capacity due to shear flow. They are also used in jacking applications for initial liftoff of rotors under low or no rotation conditions, especially for heavy rotors where significant babbitt damage would otherwise occur. Traditional hydrostatic bearing analyses assume isothermal lubricating flows. Analytical solutions also assume that the pressure in the pocket of the hydrostatic bearing is constant. This assumption is only approximately correct for low and zero operating speeds. Analytical solutions also assume that the runner and pad surfaces are parallel. The analytical solutions are not capable of capturing damage or misalignment effects. This paper describes a hydrodynamic analysis of a hydrostatic thrust bearing. The solution is based on a finite element solution to the generalized Reynolds equation. The finite element solution is applied in both the pocket and pad regions of the hydrostatic bearings. The analysis includes a flow loop balance that considers the effects of pressure losses in the lubricant supply piping, allowing for modeling of saturation effects in bearing load capacity. The flow loop balance for the lubrication supply is coupled with the bearing solution. This allows for pad loads to vary as a function of circumferential position in thrust bearings. The analysis was applied to the operation of a hydrostatic thrust bearing system for the HUSIR radio telescope at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Simplified models of pad damage and runner misalignment were considered in the analysis. The minimum film thickness and pressure profile was calculated. Runner misalignment reduced minimum film thickness by up to 80% when compared to a parallel runner under identical loading conditions. Runner damage equivalent to twice the nominal film thickness reduced the minimum film thickness by approximately 10%.

New technological developments are changing how the product design community communicates in the workplace and in the classroom. Slack, an online communication application with some project management features, has become a popular communication tool among many workers and students. This paper examines the Slack conversation conducted by 16 student product development teams in a course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2.009: Product Engineering Processes. Following a typical product development process, co-located teams of 17–20 students each used the online communication tool in addition to face-to-face meetings to design new products in one semester. The resulting conversations were analyzed for message count over the course of the semester, message count by day of the week and hour of the day, message count by user, and communication organization. It was observed that teams tended to increase their communication right before deadlines and decrease it right after. When viewing teams’ communication patterns by day of the week and the hour of the day, it was seen that many teams increased their communication in a short period after team meetings. In both of these cases, successful teams tended to have more consistent communication. There was little correlation (R2 = 2186) between the number of hours teams reported working on the class and their Slack activity by day. When looking at a team’s total volume of communication, high volumes may indicate team members are working well, but it may also indicate they are struggling. Teams with higher levels of success tended to have more organized communication structures than teams with lower levels of success, as assessed by instructors. In addition to the data collected in this work, further research is still needed to understand with more certainty how online communication patterns correlate to teams’ levels of success or team behaviors.
