Handel); The Creation (Joseph Haydn); Symphony no. 9 (Ludwig van Beethoven); St. Paul (Felix Mendelssohn); Ein deutsches Requiem (Johannes Brahms); Messa da Requiem (Giuseppe Verdi); Mass (Igor Stravinsky); and War Requiem (Benjamin Britten). The works are presented in separate chapters, with each chapter divided into three basic sections—history, analysis, and performance practice. Discussions of history include biographical information about composers related to the work at hand, historical perspectives, and text sources. Analyses are focused on formal and musical structures, salient compositional techniques, and elements of music particular to the work being discussed, including parody and motivic organization. The discussion of performance practices includes primary source quotations about a wide range of topics, from performing forces, tempo, and phrasing of each work to specific issues such as tactus, text underlay, musica ficta, metric accentuation, rhythmic alteration, recitative, fermatas, and ornamentation. This chapter analyses the text and epigraphy of two monumental inscriptions in Rome; both are important sources of information on landholding in early medieval Italy, and both shed light on the development of the Patrimony of St Peter and the evolving power of the popes as de facto rulers of Rome and its environs in the seventh and eighth centuries. Pope Gregory the Great (d. 604) commissioned the earlier of the two inscriptions for the basilica of St Paul, where it still survives (MEC I, XII.1). The inscription preserves the full text of a letter from Gregory to Felix, rector of the Appian patrimony (Ep. XIV.14). It ordered Felix to transfer the large estate (massa) of Aquae Salviae, with all its farms (fundi) as well as other nearby properties, from the patrimony into the direct control of the basilica of St Paul in order to fund the provision of its lighting; it was one of the last letters that Gregory wrote. The patron of the second inscription was Gregory’s eighth-century namesake and successor, Pope Gregory II (715–31), indignus servus (MEC I, XIV.1). This one is fixed in the portico of the basilica of St Peter, where it stands alongside another eighth-century inscription, namely, the epitaph of Pope Hadrian I that was commissioned by Charlemagne after Hadrian’s death in 795. Gregory II’s inscription also records a donation in Patrimonio Appiae, this time to provide oil for the lights of St Peter’s. This chapter investigates the form, content, and historical context of the production and display of these two inscriptions, analysing parallels and differences between them. It considers what they reveal about estate organization and the development of the territorial power of the papacy in this formative period, as well as the role of Gregory the Great as an exemplar for the early eighth-century popes.

This edition of St. Augustine's The City of God (De Civitate Dei) is the only one in English to provide a text and translation as well as a detailed commentary of this most influential document in the history of western Christianity. In these books, written in the aftermath of the sack of Rome in AD 410 by the Goths, Augustine replies to the pagans, who attributed the fall of Rome to the Christian religion and its prohibition of the worship of the pagan gods. Following on from Book IX, this book discusses the issue of demons and their role in Platonism as being partly identical with the lesser gods. Having previously argued that in order to achieve the blessed life, we must worship one true God alone, Augustine now continues his discussion using the celebrated Neoplatonist Porphyry as his main source. Whilst applauding aspects of Porphyry's views, Augustine's main concern is to deliver his message that the sole path to blessedness after death is acknowledgement of the Incarnation and Christ as Mediator. Increasingly concerned with promoting the Christian message, Augustine cites the Bible frequently in Book X. The edition presents Latin text with facing-page translation, introduction and commentary.

There has been a lot of interest in recent decades in the question of whether ancient Greek religion was influenced by the religions of the Ancient Near East. This book examines the relationship between Greek religion and the religious system of the Hittites, as we know it from cuneiform texts perserved in the Hittite archives. The question seems worth exploring partly because the Hittite texts are such a rich source for religion, documenting religious practices of many cultures Anatolia in the Late Bronze Age (e.g. the Luwians), and partly because the Hittites are known to have been in contact with Mycenaean Greece, known to them as Ahhiyawa. Greek religion of the 1st millennium BC may also show influence from Hittite religion, either inheriting it from Mycenaean religon or borrowing it from the successor cultures of Anatolia. The book is divided into three parts: Part 1 (chapters 1-4) is introductory, setting out the evidence and a methodological paradigm for using comparative data (chapter 4). Part 2 (chapters 5-8) look at cases where there may have been contact or influence: contact in the Late Bronze (chapter 5), the case of scapegoat rituals (chapter 6), Cybele (chapter 7) and the Kumarbi-Cycle (chapter 8). Part 3 looks at some key aspects of religion shared by both religious systems: the pantheon (chapter 9), rituals of war (chapter 10), festivals (chapter 11) and animal sacrifice (chapter 12).

MOTHER KATHERINE FROM KŁOBUCK (1552-1620): CO-FOUNDER OF THE ORDER OF AUGUSTINIAN NUNS IN POLAND The book includes articles describing the life of Mother Katherine from Kłobuck and the environment in which she grew, matured, and later on – through founding a monastic community – served the others. Papers delivered at the conference organised in Krakow on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Mother Katherine’s death were chronologically arranged. In the first text, concerning Kłobuck, some hypotheses on the origin of Mother Katherine have been discussed. The next articles present, on the basis of detailed analysis covering historical sources, the biography of Mother Katherine and the environment in which she lived after her husband’s death: the town of Kazimierz, the Church of St Margaret and St Katherine. One can also read about the religious climate in which she founded a new community. The article concerning the possibility of the beatification and canonisation process is here an interesting summary. The publication constitutes a huge contribution to spreading knowledge about one of the oldest monastic orders in Poland and circumstances of its creation.

The Book of Hours of Louis De Roucy was a magnificent manuscript, illuminated by a pupil of the so-called Master of the Troyes Missal. In the inauspicious date of 2009, like many others, the Book of Hours of Louis De Roucy was also the victim of an act of biblioclasm in Germany. Professor Carla Rossi, thanks to the WayBack Recovery(c) method, has found 99% of the manuscript’s iconographic cycle and over a hundred text leaves, thus digitally reconstructing the book and providing a virtual facsimile edition. In the Office of the Dead’s first lesson, the text is extremely rare and, according to K. Ottosen, is only found in sources from Châlons-en-Champagne. This non-negligible detail, alongside the textual reconstruction of other prayers in the final section of the manuscript, allows for the tracing of its production as well as its first owner in a Champenois environment. This geographical location gains support (in che senso?) from the All Saints miniature, depicting St Stephen in the foreground, since Stephen himself is infact the patron saint of the cathedral of Châlons-en-Champagne. In at least six initials appears a heraldic shield, made of a lion rampant azure, langued and armed gules. In the 15th century this shield belonged to Jean VII, Count de Roucy-Pierrepont and Sire de Montmirail, in accordance with the wishes of his mother Jeanne. As a matter of fact, in 1438 she signed a document in which she undertook to leave all her possessions to her son, on condition that the latter used her father’s (Jean VI, Count de Braine and de Roucy-Pierrepont, died at Azincourt in 1415) heraldic coat of arms. Jean VII, in turn, without any legitimate heirs, left his title as well as his heraldic coat of arms to Louis (1465-1536), his illegitimate son from the relationship with Isabelle de Montchâlons. The teenage male patron depicted on folio 191v, kneeling before the Virgin in a full-page miniature to the 'O intemerata' prayer, is likely Louis himself. The obsessive presence of the De Roucy coat of arms in the manuscript may be explained by the de facto legitimisation of the young aristocrat.
