Astro[sound]bites is a bi-weekly, freely-available podcast companion to the popular blog Astrobites.org. The graduate-student co-hosts of astro[sound]bites present Astrobites content, with an emphasis on synthesizing diverse subfields and pursuing topics peripheral to research. Each episode features a "space sound" segment in which we play and discuss an audio clip related to astronomy and astrophysics. Astro[sound]bites conveys recent astronomy research results in an engaging and accessible manner without visual media. As of April 2022, we have published 53 episodes across many streaming platforms, with approximately 200 downloads per episode in 70 countries, totalling over 12,000 downloads. While astronomy content is often conveyed visually, we provide a crucial resource for auditory learning and promote efforts for inclusionary practices in astronomy.

Voice-over translation is characterised by some technical synchronic features (isochrony, literal synchrony, action synchrony, kinetic synchrony, content synchrony and character synchrony). From these, isochrony and literal synchrony contribute to the illusion of authenticity and realism with what is called sound bites (a time span in the target version in which we only hear the original voice, and which can occur at the beginning and/or at the end of the speaker’s intervention). In our study, after analysing a corpus made up of different voiced-over programmes using speech analysis software and a spreadsheet, we have seen that the average duration of sound bites differs from that stated by the scholarly tradition both in terms of seconds and number of words. In addition, we also analysed samples that show no literal synchrony to see how and whether the rendition success of those parts could be affected. The results confirm that sound bites and literal synchrony are aesthetic enhancers which provide voice-over with an authenticity feel that makes it, for some scholars, the most faithful and reliable audiovisual translation mode.

This article explores two popular TikTok trends that use sound bites from the original cast recordings of Heathers: The Musical and Six. The ‘Martha Dumptruck in the Flesh’ challenge from Heathers: The Musical and the ‘Yeah That Didn’t Work Out’ challenge from Six were, by and large, completely detached from the musicals. TikTokers who engaged with these trends, therefore, likely did not even know that the sound bites came from musicals. These musicals became what I term ‘stealth musicals’, or undercover musicals that proliferate on TikTok in ways that are completely removed from the show’s dramaturgy. As stealth musicals, Heathers: The Musical and Six did not just go viral but stayed viral on TikTok. I argue, therefore, that these two musicals became canonical pieces of Gen Z culture. With viral canonization, Heathers: The Musical and Six demonstrate how cultural capital accrues in digital spaces and, as a result, sound bites such as ‘Martha Dumptruck in the flesh’ enter into a public life that extends beyond the musicals themselves. Indeed, as I propose, quoting ‘Martha Dumptruck in the flesh’ is as synonymous with Gen Z culture as it is with the musical Heathers.

Determining ingestive behaviors of dairy cows is critical to evaluate their productivity and health status. The objectives of this research were to (1) develop the relationship between forage species/heights and sound characteristics of three different ingestive behaviors (bites, chews, and chew-bites); (2) comparatively evaluate three deep learning models and optimization strategies for classifying the three behaviors; and (3) examine the ability of deep learning modeling for classifying the three ingestive behaviors under various forage characteristics. The results show that the amplitude and duration of the bite, chew, and chew-bite sounds were mostly larger for tall forages (tall fescue and alfalfa) compared to their counterparts. The long short-term memory network using a filtered dataset with balanced duration and imbalanced audio files offered better performance than its counterparts. The best classification performance was over 0.93, and the best and poorest performance difference was 0.4–0.5 under different forage species and heights. In conclusion, the deep learning technique could classify the dairy cow ingestive behaviors but was unable to differentiate between them under some forage characteristics using acoustic signals. Thus, while the developed tool is useful to support precision dairy cow management, it requires further improvement.

This research deals with the electoral campaign for 2022 presidential elections in France. Starting from the distinction between the French expressions “mésinformation”, “désinformation” and “information malveillante”, it aims at analysing Marine Le Pen’s argumentation during her campaign and the type of information which is spread via social media, namely Twitter. In particular, attention will be paid to a video published in the Twitter counter-profile “Sans lui” in order to examine its sound bites. Methodological framework is based on the analysis of digital discourse (Paveau 2016; Lacaze 2021, among others) and on French political and media discourse (Krieg-Planque 2009, 2011; Amossy 2014; Charaudeau 2020, 2022; Maingueneau 2021; Wahnich 2022, among others). The results of this analysis show that sound bites used by Marine Le Pen mostly express disinformation and malevolent information. This result is in line with populist rhetoric by Marine Le Pen and her party and, more in general, with the “crisis of truth” (Charaudeau 2020) that characterizes contemporary times.

Some raps are known as bhattirap and some are known as party rap. And some are meaningless raps. But at this moment it is a time of deuseerap. Deuseerap!!Opening rap in ‘Deusee rey extended mix’ by Brazesh Khanal(translated from Nepali; underlined words are sung in English)Throughout Asia, the English word ‘mix’ (or variant thereof) is being used today to characterise a new mode of musical borrowing and syncretism distinctive of several pop musics that have emerged in the 1990s. Earlier modes of pop music borrowing typically involve timbral, rhythmic and melodic adaptations of both indigenous and foreign materials, in which contrasts between different musical elements are smoothed over so that they can be integrated into unified musical expressions. In contrast, the new ‘mix’ music of India (Greene 2000, pp. 545–6), Nepal (Greene 1999A; Henderson 1999), Japan (Condry 1999), Indonesia (Wallach 1999) and South Asian diasporic communities (Manuel 1995) employs the latest sound studio technologies in order to reproduce more precisely than ever before the precise timbres, rhythms and tunings of sound bites of both foreign pop and indigenous music. Yet as these foreign and indigenous sounds are coming more sharply into focus in Asian soundscapes, their meanings and histories seem to be going out of focus. For one thing, a ‘mix’ commonly takes the form of a sonic montage: abruptly juxtaposed musical styles heard in rapid succession that project only a weak sense of overarching form. In this ‘mix’ configuration, foreign and indigenous sounds sometimes present themselves as inscrutable sound bites – snippets detached from their original musical and cultural contexts. Mixes typically celebrate sonic contrasts, rather than attempt to reach or move the listener within any single musical idiom. Moreover, foreign sounds travel to Asia so quickly through radio, music television, recordings and the Internet, that they are detached from their histories and original cultural contexts, and often present themselves as suggestive, intriguing, but underdetermined cultural indexes. This point is taken up below in an analysis of Nepali heavy metal, one of the elements in the mix. Both Western pop and indigenous sounds become perspectival constructs, taking on a range of meanings and affective forces in different listener experiences. Mix music embodies new, understudied and essentially postmodern musical aesthetics (in the sense of Manuel 1995) that have taken root in Asian and other world communities.

AbstractIn January 2016, the World Health Organization warned that Zika virus is “spreading explosively” in the Americas and that up to 4 million infections could be present worldwide within a year. Soon thereafter, some politicians and authors publicly advocated for quarantine of travelers returning from regions where mosquitoes carrying Zika virus are prevalent. The public health tool of quarantine can be used to prevent the spread of infection by restricting the movement of persons who have been exposed to a deadly disease that can be transmitted from person to person before symptom onset. With 80% of Zika virus infections being asymptomatic, no rapid test being available to detect the virus, and primary transmission being via the bites of certain mosquitoes, application of quarantine in this setting is not scientifically sound or practically feasible. Rather, public health interventions should focus on preventing bites from infected mosquitoes, counseling pregnant women on the risks of fetal microcephaly and other birth defects, and identifying patients with signs and symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome. As was seen in the Ebola virus disease outbreak of 2014, non-evidence-based factors can influence policy decisions. Public health experts must ensure that policy makers are informed that quarantine is not a scientifically sound approach for the control of Zika virus. The Subject of the Study are the peculiarities concerning citation / quotation of sources in the Ukrainian information environment, based on the examples of news bulletin newscasts at all-Ukrainian radio stations of the talk format. It updates the issue specified, particularly, a saturation of the media space with disinformation, fakes, propaganda, manipulations by data, etc. The neglectful attitude of the editorial offices to the checking of information sources, data accuracy, non-giving of the stage to all the participants in conflict situations, and the absence of expert comments lead to the violation of professional standards in the journalist materials to be on air. The result is a decrease of trust from the audience both to a particular media and to media employees in general. The risks of these consequences can be reduced by the systematic monitoring of the information segment of radio broadcasting and the formation of the monitoring results-based theoretic principles and practical recommendations for improvement, particularly, of the citation / quotation of information sources. Therefore, the aim of the article is to provide general information about the main types of citations in informational radio texts (documentary recordings — synchronies, indirect speech, marker words), some mistakes made by authors when working with them, and to develop recommendations for recording and editing synchronies. The method of qualitative content analysis was used to study the information radio environment and to specify the peculiarities of source citation / quotation in it. News bulletin newscasts of all-Ukraine’s radio stations of talk formats such as “Ukrainske Radio” (“Pershyi Kanal” and “Promin”), “Hromadske Radio”, “Radio NV” served as the material for this analysis. The content analysis results allowed to establish certain tendencies concerning the citation / quotation influencing on information saturation of news reports, their correspondence to professional standards as well as the dynamics of air. They facilitate the news perception. Moreover, the information about the main ways of citation / quotation (sound bite, indirect speech, words-markers), and their content-sand-structural peculiarities was summarized. Citation / quotations — sound bites are under special attention. By the form, the sound bites can be types of speech, interview, comment, etc., which are characterized by laconism, pungency and compactness. It also analyses the mistakes made by authors while preparing sound bites for air at the stage of information collection, content and structural coordination with the main text of the news report. The practical significance consists of recommendations on the citation / quotation of information sources following the professional standards. The research of the problem based on the example of local talk radio stations can be perspective.

In 2007, Vessey and Blauwkamp readdressed Gadamer’s 1972 essay ‘‘The Incapacity for Conversation’’ where the question of how changes in present society communicates is creating an incapacity for conversation. This manuscript further explores this idea about whether we are becoming influenced and charmed by the brevity of #communication i.e., text messaging, tweets, emoticons, speed-dating, and sound-bites. These popular cultural phenomena can become even more pronounced in medicine, where communication as conversation is reduced to checklists, interdisciplinary and patient debriefings, numeric technologic test results and perhaps a from of speed-patient(ing). Consequently, we may be eroding our already undervalued capacity to participate in person centred conversations due to the demands of modern medical practice.

AbstractInformation and communication technology (ICT) programs like Microsoft PowerPoint and Apple Keynote have become the norm for large university lecture classes, but their record in terms of student engagement and active learning is mixed at best. Here, the author presents the merits of a “populist” lecture style that takes full advantage of the variety of features available from the latest generation of ICT programs. Based on visual variety, audio and visual sound bites, and the incorporation of humor and pop-cultural references, this populist approach not only facilitates greater student attention and engagement with the class materials, but also offers unmatched opportunities for extending student learning beyond the confines of the large lecture hall.
