Temperature was varied over a wide range to determine its effect on the luminescence properties of deuterated phenanthrene and phenanthrene adsorbed on a number of solid matrices. Not only were insights into the effects of temperature and solid matrices on the luminescence properties acquired but also the deuterium isotope effect revealed unique information about the role played by the solid matrix in the luminescence of the model compounds. In addition, comparisons of nonradiative rate constants and the efficiencies of intersystem crossing revealed important differences among the solid matrices in altering these parameters. The perdeuterated phenanthrene and phenanthrene proved to be useful probes for investigating the effects of solid matrices on the excited triplet state of phosphors because the excited singlet state of the lumiphor was affected very little by the solid matrices, and the rate constants of phosphorescence for the two phosphors are essentially the same.

This review paper explores the potential of bioleaching as a sustainable alternative for recovering metals from solid matrices. With over 12 billion tons of solid waste annually worldwide, bioleaching provides a promising opportunity to extract metals from solid waste, avoiding harmful chemical processes. It explains bacterial and fungal bioleaching techniques that extract copper, gold, zinc, and other metals from solid matrices. Fungal bioleaching effectively extracts a wide range of valuable metals, including nickel, vanadium, aluminium, molybdenum, cobalt, iron, manganese, silver, platinum, and palladium. The review highlights different solid matrices with metal contents that have the potential to be recovered by bioleaching, presenting promising bioprocess alternatives to current industrially available technologies for metal recovery. The optimal conditions for bioleaching, including pH, temperature, agitation–aeration, and pulp density are also discussed. The review shows that bioleaching has the potential to play a crucial role in the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy by providing an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method for metal recovery from solid matrices.

The regenerative medicine uses gel and porous solid matrices as scaffolds for the growth of the stem cells in 3D structures. The structural and fluid dynamic properties of the matrices have been recognized to highly affect the behaviour and functions of the cells. The procedures of production and the clinical use of the matrices need a reliable and reproducible characterization of their properties, this means that the concepts of metrology must be applied to the measurement and definition of all the relevant properties. This paper deals with the calculation of uncertainty for diffusivity measurement in solids and the role of uncertainty in designing the measurement. Diffusion of a solute in spherical solid particles dispersed in a limited liquid volume where considered as measurement method for a Ca-alginate polymer. The model sensitivity to the concentration measurements, the model parameters and the fitting procedures have been discussed.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to obtain data concerning growth factor release within liquid and solid platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) matrices and to estimate the amount of potential interindividual variations as a basis for further preclinical and clinical trials. Therefore, we aimed to determine possible differences in the release of growth factors between liquid and solid PRF. Materials and Methods: Blood samples obtained from four subjects were processed to both liquid and solid PRF matrices using a standard centrifugation protocol. Five growth factors (vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF; epidermal growth factor, EGF; platelet-derived growth factor-BB, PDGF-BB; transforming growth factor-β1, TGF-β1; and matrix metallopeptidase 9, MMP-9) have been evaluated at six time points by ELISA over a total observation period of 10 days (1 h, 7 h, 1 d, 2 d, 7 d, and 10 d). Results: Growth factor release could be measured in all samples at each time point. Comparing liquid and solid PRF matrices, no significant differences were detected (p > 0.05). The mean release of VEGF, TGFβ-1, PDGF-BB, and MMP-9 raised to a peak at time point five (day 7) in both liquid and solid PRF matrices. VEGF release was lower in liquid PRF than in solid PRF, whereas those of PDGF-BB and MMP-9 were higher in liquid PRF than in solid PRF at all time points. EGF had its peak release already at time point two after 7 h in liquid and solid matrices (hour 7 EGF solid: mean = 180 pg/mL, SD = 81; EGF liquid: mean = 218 pg/mL, SD = 64), declined rapidly until day 2, and had a second slight peak on day 7 in both groups (day 7 EGF solid: mean = 182 pg/mL, SD = 189; EGF liquid: mean = 81 pg/mL, SD = 70). Conclusions: This study detected growth factor release within liquid and solid PRF matrices with little variations. Further preclinical trials are needed to precisely analyze the growth factor release in larger samples and to better understand their effects on wound healing in different clinical indications.

Among the industrial solid residues, the galvanic wastes have been received special attention, due to the nature of its components. These residues in general present a high concentration of alkaline and transition metals. When discarded or stored inadequately, they can be released for the environment, causing ecological and health damages. An interesting alternative to recycle those wastes is to remove them from the environment, through its incorporation in silicate glasses matrices. This work proposes the obtaining of amorphous structures, glasses or frits, from formulations with industrial solid galvanic wastes, with good chemical stability. A characterization study of the residue and primary materials, as commercial silica and feldspar and investigations about the formation of amorphous phases, galvanic wastes incorporation and chemical stability of the obtained products, were made. With these results, it was possible to formulate compositions that allow the obtaining of frits for ceramic enamels, with 23 % in weight of solid galvanic waste incorporated and good coating characteristics.

We study the limiting dynamics of C 60-doped porous sol-gel glasses by single- and double-pulse pump-probe experiments. We find that, contrary to crystalline films of C60, reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of these solid samples can be described by a 5-level model developed for C 60-solutions. We observe an ultrafast rise time, a large transmission-decrease at high fluence, a shortened singlet-state lifetime as compared to solutions, but nevertheless an important triplet yield. We explain differences with respect to solutions by the absence of stabilizing aromatic solvents and by the interaction of the amorphous environment with the molecules, broadening considerably the spectral features of RSA.

AbstractThis manuscript describes a new multiresidue method utilising ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) via multiple reaction monitoring (MRM), for the identification and quantification of 58 antibiotics and their 26 metabolites, in various solid and liquid environmental matrices. The method was designed with a ‘one health’ approach in mind requiring multidisciplinary and multisectoral collaborative efforts. It enables comprehensive evaluation of antibiotic usage in surveyed communities via wastewater-based epidemiology, as well as allowing for the assessment of potential environmental impacts. The instrumental performance was very good, demonstrating linearity up to 3000 μg L−1, and high accuracy and precision. The method accuracy in several compounds was significantly improved by dividing calibration curves into separate ranges. This was accompanied by applying a weighting factor (1/x). Microwave-assisted and/or solid-phase extraction of analytes from liquid and solid matrices provided good recoveries for most compounds, with only a few analytes underperforming. Method quantification limits were determined as low as 0.017 ng L−1 in river water, 0.044 ng L−1 in wastewater, 0.008 ng g−1 in river sediment, and 0.009 ng g−1 in suspended solids. Overall, the method was successfully validated for the quantification of 64 analytes extracted from aqueous samples, and 45 from solids. The analytes that underperformed are considered on a semi-quantitative basis, including aminoglycosides and carbapenems. The method was applied to both solid and liquid environmental matrices, whereby several antibiotics and their metabolites were quantified. The most notable antibiotic-metabolite pairs are three sulfonamides and their N-acetyl metabolites; four macrolides/lincomycins and their N-desmethyl metabolites; and five quinolone metabolites. The emergence of two-phase instability is investigated analytically for the axisymmetric cylinders made of a pervious solid matrix with pores filled with an interstitial fluid. General analytical solutions are derived for a broad range of constitutive models, and are illustrated for a few specific types of solids. For particular combinations of stresses and material moduli, saturated hypoelastic and elastoplastic solids are found to undergo two-phase instability, whereas their dry solid matrices remain stable. Two-phase instability can emerge within stable single-phase solids due to the interaction between solid matrix and fluid flow. The present analysis provides general analytical solutions useful for investigating the instabilities of axisymmetric soil samples subjected to the undrained triaxial tests of geomechanics.

Protein drugs may encounter conformational perturbations during the formulation processing of lipid-based solid dosage forms. In aqueous protein solutions, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy can investigate these conformational changes following the subtraction of spectral interference of solvent with protein amide I bands. However, in solid dosage forms, the possible spectral contribution of lipid carriers to protein amide I band may be an obstacle to determine conformational alterations. The objective of this study was to develop an ATR FT-IR spectroscopic method for the analysis of protein secondary structure embedded in solid lipid matrices. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was chosen as a model protein, while Precirol AT05 (glycerol palmitostearate, melting point 58 ℃) was employed as the model lipid matrix. Bovine serum albumin was incorporated into lipid using physical mixing, melting and mixing, or wet granulation mixing methods. Attenuated total reflection FT-IR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) were performed for the analysis of BSA secondary structure and its dissolution in aqueous media, respectively. The results showed significant interference of Precirol ATO5 with BSA amide I band which was subtracted up to 90% w/w lipid content to analyze BSA secondary structure. In addition, ATR FT-IR spectroscopy also detected thermally denatured BSA solid alone and in the presence of lipid matrix indicating its suitability for the detection of denatured protein solids in lipid matrices. Despite being in the solid state, conformational changes occurred to BSA upon incorporation into solid lipid matrices. However, the extent of these conformational alterations was found to be dependent on the mixing method employed as indicated by area overlap calculations. For instance, the melting and mixing method imparted negligible effect on BSA secondary structure, whereas the wet granulation mixing method promoted more changes. Size exclusion chromatography analysis depicted the complete dissolution of BSA in the aqueous media employed in the wet granulation method. In conclusion, an ATR FT-IR spectroscopic method was successfully developed to investigate BSA secondary structure in solid lipid matrices following the subtraction of lipid spectral interference. The ATR FT-IR spectroscopy could further be applied to investigate the secondary structure perturbations of therapeutic proteins during their formulation development.

Abstract The inherent complexity of the human biological matrix and its importance in modern medical diagnosis and medical research promote the development of modern analytical technology. Solid-phase microextraction technology has been widely used in the treatment and analysis of different complex biological matrices due to its smaller sample size, simpler sample preparation and setting, and lower consumption of harmful chemicals. This review provides updated information on headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography technique applications, focusing on the analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds in human biological matrices. The application of headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography techniques in human biological matrix analysis is mainly summarized into three aspects, namely, to discover biomarkers, to investigate volatile metabolomics, and to explore the effect of the external environment on volatile metabolomics of the human biological matrix. In addition, the frequently used statistical analytical methods are summarized, and the application prospect of solid-phase microextraction in the analysis of human biological matrices is proposed.

Magnetic solid phase extraction has been used as pretreatment technique for the analysis of several compounds because of its advantages when it is compared with classic methods. This methodology is based on the use of magnetic solids as adsorbents for preconcentration of different analytes from complex matrices. Magnetic solid phase extraction minimizes the use of additional steps such as precipitation, centrifugation, and filtration which decreases the manipulation of the sample. In this review, we describe the main procedures used for synthesis, characterization, and application of this pretreatment technique which were applied in food analysis.

A relatively large number of comparisons have been made between solution luminescence and solid-matrix luminescence parameters for several lumiphors adsorbed on a number of solid matrices. Comparisons have been made for both room-temperature and low-temperature fluorescence and phosphorescence quantum yields, fluorescence and phosphorescence lifetimes, and a variety of photophysical rate constants. The comparisons reveal that solid-matrix luminescence can give greater fluorescence and phosphorescence quantum yields in many cases at room temperature, compared to the corresponding solution quantum yields at low temperature. The comparisons of fluorescence and phosphorescence lifetimes and the photophysical rate constants for the lumiphors adsorbed on solid matrices and in solutions reveal new insights into the differences between solid-matrix luminescence and solution luminescence.

Fibers of cellulose diacetate (CDA) and chitosan (CTS) of polycationic and polybasic forms were tested as matrices for solid-surface fluorescence (SSF) of several fluorescent probes—eosin Y, trypaflavine, and pyrene. The morphology and surface potential of these matrices were examined. The influence of structural and energetic characteristics of the fibrous polysaccharide materials at SSF of the probes was shown. Fluorescence was studied in aqueous solutions of eosin Y and trypaflavine, in water-ethanolic and water-micellar surfactant media of pyrene, before and after dynamic sorption of the dyes on fibers and in the adsorbed state. The surface of CDA fiber was shown to be capable of sorbing trypaflavine from water and pyrene from water-micellar surfactant media of various types, so it can be a promising matrix for SSF of pyrene and trypaflavine and their chemical analogs. The Coulomb interactions were proposed to determine eosin Y and trypaflavine concentration on the surface of CTS matrices and the SSF of these probes. The CTS fibers were permeable to hydrophobic pyrene dissolved in an ethanol-water medium or solubilized in the micelles of ionic surfactants.

Improved experimental technique has been used to stabilized hydrogen and deuterium atoms in solid Ar and Ne matrices. It is found that H and D atoms are stabilized in these matrices at two nonequivalent trapping sites. For H and D atoms in solid argon, the narrowest experimentally recorded EPR spectral lines having a width ΔH = 55 (15) mG have been observed during matrix isolation of particles. The isotope effect has been detected in the matrix shifts of hyperfine structure constants of stabilized atoms.

The system of four quaternion matrices for presentation of main relationships of the theory of final rotation, kinematics and nonlinear dynamics of an asymmetric solid body in a three-dimensional space is presented. By means of application of equations in the form of Euler-Lagrange and the system of four quaternion matrices, the block-matrix model of nonlinear dynamics of a free asymmetric solid body in a three-dimensional space is built. The results obtained are approved. The offered algorithms are adapted directly to computing experiment.

For the development of methods for the disposal of radioactive waste in the rocks of the earths crust, the concept of phase and chemical correspondence in the system of matrix material ― host rock has been proposed. This principle allows directional synthesis of certain mineral matrices. Matrix materials were experimentally synthesized ― solid solutions of minerals for immobilization of alkaline, alkaline-earth, rare-earth elements ― radionuclides. The properties of a number of solid solutions of minerals are investigated. The possibilities of processing graphite into stable matrices are studied. Methods of fixation and separation of noble metals (components of radioactive waste) and halides (Br, I) have been developed. The problems of processing glass matrix minerals (borosilicate and aluminophosphate glasses) into stable crystalline matrix materials are considered. Methods for processing glass matrices into mineral matrix materials are presented.

Polar benzotriazoles are corrosion inhibitors with widespread use; they are environmentally characterized as emerging pollutants in the water system, where they are present in low concentrations. Various extraction methods have been used for their separation from various matrices, ranging from classical liquid–liquid extractions to various microextraction techniques, but the most frequently applied extraction technique remains the solid-phase extraction (SPE), which is the focus of this review. We present an overview of the methods, developed in the last decade, applied for the determination of benzotriazoles in aqueous and solid environmental samples. Several other matrices, such as human urine and plant material, are also considered in the text. The methods are reviewed according to the determined compounds, sample matrices, cartridges and eluents used, extraction recoveries and the achieved limits of quantification. A critical evaluation of the advantages and drawbacks of the published methods is given.

An overview of recent results obtained by our group on the development of polymeric solid-state media incorporating either Rhodamine or Coumarin dyes is presented. The effect on the laser performance of the rigidity and viscoelastic properties of the polymeric matrix has been investigated. Lasing efficiencies similar to those found in ethanolic solution, and improved photochemical stability, as compared with that obtained in previous polymeric materials, were demonstrated for solid solutions of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) in appropriate copolymer formulations of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA). Further improvements in photostability were obtained when modified Rh6G molecules were copolymerized with HEMA and MMA. When samples of this new highly homogeneous gain medium were placed in a rotating system, where the laser medium was scanned in a continuous way, a stable laser output with no sign of degradation after 500,000 shots was accomplished for transversal pumping at 337 nm with 1.7 mJ pulses from a N2-laser at 2 Hz repetition rate. The effect on laser operation of different polymerization methods, dye concentration, and composition of the polymeric matrix was also investigated for Coumarin-doped gain media. Conditions were found that significantly improved both lasing efficiency and photostability in Coumarin 540A (C540A)-doped polymeric matrices. Insight into the main photodegradation mechanisms of this dye was provided by the study of fluorescence and lasing properties of a number of C540A solutions with increased viscosity, from liquid solution to solid polymer matrix.

In preparation for a spaceflight experiment to measure photosynthesis of wheat (PESTO), four solid media were evaluated for use in the rooting modules of the Biomass Production System (BPS), a new plant growth unit for microgravity. The media were commercial peat-vermiculite (PV) mixture, zeolite developed at Johnson Space (Z/JSC), commercial zeolite developed by Boulder Innovative Technologies (Z/BIT), and arcillite (AR) with slow-release fertilizer. Wheat (cv. USU Super Dwarf) was grown in the media at 1500 μmol/mol CO2, 350 μmol·m-2·s-1 PAR, 23 °C, and 75% relative humidity for 18 to 21 days. Water was delivered to the media through porous tubes imbedded in the media, and NDS pressures of -0.1 to -0.5 kPa were maintained with either a static or recirculating standpipe. Plant height, leaf area, and fresh mass were determined for each experiment. Results indicated that the AR and Z/BIT media resulted in larger and more uniform plants than Z/JSC or PV at the same NDS pressure. Additional experiments were conducted with AR to evaluate interactions between particle size and NDS pressure. At ≈14 days after planting, there was a loss of NDS prime in AR >2.0 mm when the NDS pressure was less than -0.3kPa. This resulted in drying of the media and poor plant growth. There was excess water in the media, which resulted in reduced plant size, in AR <1.0 mm at NDS pressures more than -0.3 kPa.
