This paper uses scenery complementary heating method to discuss a new type of scenery complementary water heater design. This product can be divided into two parts. The first part is the eddy current method wind power heating part, which is driven by wind power and vertical axis wind turbines and the design of magnet array rotor disc rotation, namely, magnetic field rotating, induced eddy current in the stator, so as to generate heat. The second part is the solar heating part. This works has broad market prospect, which provides a new idea for large-scaled heating method.

The paper analyses six typical points to research the solar energy, wind energy to the battery energy conversion. Moreover, the paper also analyses the scenery energy and fan speed data for four seasons, providing scientific basis for eco-city management analysis of local natural resources utilization.

The authors describe a new Digital Planetarium system and application (“Galactica”), for interactive visualization of astrophysical data and phenomena in immersive virtual reality (VR) settings, based in OpenSceneGraph (OSG). Galactica enables a visual and aural experience of a virtual space traveler, that can go anywhere in the Solar System and the Milky Way at any speed. The application was tested with an available dataset of such scenery, featuring 100 629 textured billboards representing stars and additional 104 328 polygons, representing constellations, orbits, planets and respective moons of the Solar System. The authors have computed the frame rate, GPU traverse time, Cull traverse time and Draw traverse time for three visualization conditions: (A) standard OSG view frustum culling technique; (B) view frustum culling with an octree organization of the scene; (C) view frustum culling with same organization of the scene and the occlusion culling algorithm. They have generally concluded that their acceleration techniques out-performs the standard OSG view frustum culling for the mentioned metrics, when around half or less than half of the dataset is in view of the virtual camera.

Due to the fast development of high-speed rail (HSR) around the world, high-speed trains (HSTs) are becoming a strong competitor against airliners in terms of long-distance travel. Compared with airliner cabins, HST cabins have much larger window sizes. When the big windows provide better lighting and view of the scenery, they also have significant effects on the thermal conditions in the cabins due to the solar radiation through them. This study presents a numerical study on the solar radiation on the thermal comfort in a typical HST cabin. The effect of solar radiation was discussed in terms of airflow pattern, temperature distribution and thermal comfort indices. Parametric studies with seven different daytime hours were carried out. The effect of using the roller curtain was also studied. The overall cabin air temperature, especially near passengers, was found to have significantly increased by solar radiation. Passengers sitting next to windows were recorded to have an obvious thermal comfort variation at different hours of the day. To improve the passengers’ comfort and reduce energy consumption during hot weather, the use of a curtain could effectively reduce the solar radiation effect in the cabin environment.

Based on the preliminary study of the distribution of wind and light resources in the Zhongshan Station of Antarctica, and the conclusion that the scenery and resources of the station area are sufficient and complementary, this paper proposes to adapt to the power supply problem of the aeroponic, stereoscopic cultivation device in the Controlled Micro-environment applied to the polar regions. The overall architecture of the power supply system is designed. Based on the STC8A8K64S4A12 single-chip microcomputer, the hardware circuit and software program of the wind and solar hybrid power supply system controller are also designed. Finally, the debugging experiment is carried out.

In order to analyze the impact of new energy power generation on the power grid system, the reliability evaluation of the wind-solarbattery storage system is carried out. Proposed to wind power, solar, thermal power, different sodium-sulfur battery storage combined optimal dispatch of scenery. The shortest variance of the net load and the maximum variance of the wind storage system are taken as the objective function. The short-term optimal scheduling model of the power grid is established based on the characteristics of the wind farm, the characteristics of the solar field and the electric field of the sodium flow battery. Multi-objective particle swarm optimization The algorithm solves the model and obtains the output power of wind, light, storage and fire under different new energy strategies. The reliability is evaluated by Monte-Carlo method. Taking the IEEE-30 node as an example, it is proved that the proposed model is reasonable and the new energy can improve the clean energy consumption ability and minimize the impact on the power grid under the optimal scheduling strategy.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago with more than 17 000 islands, and the best marine tourism destination due to its beautiful beaches and underwater scenery, but Indonesia is also the most vulnerable country to be affected by climate change due to the greenhouse effect. Besides industry, the transportation sector is the highest contributor to the global greenhouse effect. In order to reduce the source of the greenhouse effect, the Indonesian Government has committed to using new and renewable energy as an alternative to fossil-based fuel. In an attempt to contribute to the Government’s efforts and to advance the national marine tourism, the research is aimed to design water recreational and sport vessel that powered by a solar generated electric engine, as further development of Universitas Indonesia’s solar boat participated in International Solar-boat Challenge competition in the Netherlands. The research is focused on the effective use of solar energy as the main source for powering the vessel’s electrical engine, based on the existing optimum shape and dimensions of the boat. Information and data regarding the arrangement of the vessel, solar electric generation processes and vessel powering system obtained from literature study, discussion with experts, and on the spot surveys of various recreational vessels were used as input for the calculation and simulation of the vessel being investigated. The research results are expected could be further developed for other related usages such as fish farming, coastal fishing rig, floating restaurant, etc.

Fractal objects are prevalent in natural scenery. Their repetition of patterns at increasingly fine magnifications creates a rich complexity. Fractals displaying mid-range complexity are the most common and include trees, clouds, and mountains. The “fractal fluency” model states that human vision has adapted to process these mid-range fractals with ease. I will first discuss fractal fluency and demonstrate how it enhances the observer’s visual capabilities by focusing on experiments that have important practical consequences for improving the built environment. These enhanced capabilities generate an aesthetic experience and physiological stress reduction. I will discuss strategies for integrating fractals into building designs to induce positive impacts on the observer. Examples include fractal solar panels, fractal window shades, and fractal floor patterns. These applications of fractal fluency represent a fundamental and potentially impactful form of salutogenesis.

Ce travail de recherche s’intéresse aux productions céramiques de l’âge du Bronze ancien de Bretagne et du Centre-Ouest de la France. L’étude des chaînes opératoires constitue le vecteur premier de cette étude en vue de caractériser l’évolution locale des traditions techniques et de mieux appréhender les interactions entretenues entre ces deux régions. Les résultats obtenus révèlent la présence de productions proches mais aussi d’une symbolique commune. Ces résultats sont ensuite envisagés au regard des réseaux d’échanges atlantiques depuis la Galice vers les îles Britanniques et démontrent le rôle essentiel des voies maritimes au début de la Protohistoire. Ces observations menées à une échelle locale puis européenne nous permettent enfin de nous interroger concernant l’existence d’un complexe culturel Atlantique dès le début de l’âge du Bronze
This research work focuses on Early Bronze Age ceramic production in Brittany and Central Western France. The study of the chains of operation constitutes the primary vector of this study in order to characterise the local evolution of technical traditions and to better understand the interactions between these two regions. The results obtained reveal the presence of similar productions but also of a common symbolism. These results are then considered in relation to the Atlantic exchange networks from Galicia to the British Isles and demonstrate the essential role of the maritime routes in early Protohistory. These observations, carried out on a local and then European scale, allow us to question the existence of an Atlantic cultural complex from the beginning of Bronze Age

Le rayonnement solaire est la variable la plus importante pour le calcul du bilan thermique du bâtiment. Son calcul requiert des relations géométriques pour la composante directe et un modèle de ciel pour distribuer le rayonnement diffus sur la voûte céleste. Des modèles développés pour des collecteurs solaires sont utilisés pour calculer le rayonnement solaire atteignant l'enveloppe du bâtiment. Des outils calculent le rayonnement en adaptant des modèles de ciel développés pour l'éclairage naturel. Bien que ces modèles de ciel, avec des genèses différents, servent à calculer le rayonnement solaire, il convient de préciser quel est le plus adapté pour travailler en milieu urbain.En nous appuyant sur une étude des données météorologiques, des modèles de ciel et des techniques numériques, on a mis en place un code susceptible de calculer le rayonnement direct (soleil) et diffus (ciel) et leur interaction avec la géométrie urbaine. La nouveauté réside dans l'évaluation du rayonnement solaire en utilisant un modèle de ciel isotrope et deux anisotropes. L’interaction entre ces modèles et la géométrie urbaine est mise en évidence avec une série d’exemples géométriques progressivement plus complexes. Des méthodes pour tuiler la voûte céleste sont présentées. Les différences entre le rayonnement calculé avec les modèles anisotropes (le modèle de source ponctuelle et le modèle tout temps de Perez) qui sont peu importantes dans une scène dégagée, deviennent significatives dans une scène urbaine. Des contributions ont également été apportées à la mise en place d’une station météorologique ainsi que des procédures pour l’analyse statistique des données et leur contrôle de qualité
Solar irradiation is the most important parameter for building thermal simulation. Its calculation requires geometrical relationships for the direct radiation from the Sun and a sky model to distribute the radiance over the sky vault. Sky models developed for solar collectors are used to calculate the building’s solar irradiation availability. Some software calculates building’s irradiation by adapting sky models for lighting simulations. These models allow to compute solar irradiation, but the selection of the most suitable model for urban applications has not been defined clearly enough. We developed a code, based on the study of numerical methods, sky models and the necessary meteorological data. It calculates the solar irradiation availability in the urban context. The novelty lies in its capacity to evaluate the solar irradiation from the Sun and the sky by using three sky models: one isotropic and two anisotropic. The interaction between each sky model and the urban context is made clear in a series of progressively more complex geometric examples. Procedures to partition the sky vault are presented.Differences between the predicted irradiance by the anisotropic models (Perez punctual source and Perez All-Weather) are classified as small and large in unobstructed and obstructed scenes respectively. Contributions have also been made to set up a meteorological station. Statistical analyses as well as quality control procedures of meteorological data were also implemented

Collections of scenes and texts designated variously as the "Book of the Earth," "Creation of the Solar Disc," and "Book of Aker" were inscribed on the walls of royal sarcophagus chambers throughout Egypt's Ramessid period (Dynasties 19–20). This material illustrated discrete episodes from the nocturnal voyage of the sun god, which functioned as a model for the resurrection of the deceased king. These earliest "Books of the Earth" employed mostly ad hoc arrangements of scenes, united by shared elements of iconography, an overarching, bipartite symmetry of composition, and their frequent pairing with representations of the double sky overhead. From the Twenty-First Dynasty and later, selections of programmatic tableaux were adapted for use in private mortuary contexts, often in conjunction with innovative or previously unattested annotations. The present study collects and analyzes all currently known Book of the Earth material, including discussions of iconography, grammar, orthography, and architectural setting.

The Eagle on My Arm details the journey to recovery of Vietnam veteran Patrick Bradley. Enlisting at the age of eighteen, Bradley was mortified by the scenes in the North Vietnam jungles, and found himself unable to cope. At a psychiatrist’s recommendation, Bradley traveled to the Canadian wilderness where he spent three years studying and documenting bald eagles and their behavior. He made groundbreaking discoveries during his research, linking the use of chemical DDT to the decrease in southern bald eagle populations. Additionally, he made notable progress in his recovery, able to better control his previously unmitigated anger and rage. Bradley teamed up with other veterans to form the Avian Veteran Alliance in 2015, a non-profit that pairs wounded warriors with injured birds of prey. Where the Eagles Soar, written by biographers Dava Guerin and Terry Bivens, is one of only a handful of books concerned with the unique link between avian therapy and wounded warrior recovery. Introducing the psychiatric benefits of avian and animal therapy is crucial to the cultural climate regarding mental health, and sheds light on positive and exciting alternatives in the study of PTSD among war veterans.

For those who have felt this urge, the answer is self-evident. —Hermann Oberth, Man into Space, 1957 The rise of private-sector spaceflight and American billionaires pursuing their ambitions in space seems to be a new phenomenon. After the origin of space exploration as a government enterprise during the Cold War Space Age, entrepreneurs and individuals have become a new force on the scene and are increasingly the drivers behind some of the most prominent space activities. In the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union developed intercontinental ballistic missiles to deliver their nuclear warheads, creating the technology for satellites and spaceflight vehicles. The race into space then became an important dimension of the Cold War as the two superpowers competed vigorously to be the first to claim prestigious spaceflight achievements, culminating in an American victory with the successful expedition of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the surface of the Moon. After the unmatched success of the Apollo program, with no political need for further spectaculars, NASA was downsized, spaceflight was confined to low-Earth orbit, and further exploration was confined to robots. This chapter sets the scene for future chapters covering a range of low carbon technologies from renewables through to nuclear. It reviews how the evidence base for climate change is building up, what the impacts of climate change might be, and how we are beginning to explore the policies and measures which will be needed to make the transition to a low carbon economy. The year 2005 will go down in history as the beginnings of a broad, politically backed consensus that man’s activity is influencing our climate. In February 2005, the Kyoto Protocol came into force—binding over 170 countries in action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, accepted by most informed commentators to be the principal cause of anthropogenically forced climate change. In the same year, the G8 group of countries at Gleneagles, Scotland, considered climate change as a key agenda item. Significantly, it set up a forum for discussion with other countries and the emerging economies. The forum, known as the ‘Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development’ met for the first time in November 2005. However, the value of the Kyoto protocol is not universally acknowledged. Some argue that although the science underpinning the existence of climate change and the link with carbon dioxide emissions has become unequivocal, the Kyoto protocol is not appropriate for them. A group of these countries, including the US, China, and India (huge emitters of carbon dioxide in their own right) has agreed the need to tackle climate change. Their approach is to promote clean technology development initiatives; though how exactly that partnership will evolve and deliver new low carbon technologies is not, at the time of writing, clear. Nevertheless, whether via the formalized Kyoto Protocol with carbon dioxide emission reduction targets or via other initiatives, a start has been made on the long, uncertain road to a low carbon world. Slowly, but surely, global action on climate change is gathering momentum. The term ‘greenhouse effect’ was first coined by the French mathematician Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier in 1827. It enables and sustains a broad balance between solar radiation received and Earth’ s radiation emitted or reflected.

ABSTRACT Despite the global setbacks, in recent times Africa's economy has generally managed to grow, with an average GDP increase of about 5%. Africa's economic growth prospects have been the talking point in recent economic fora. This growth however, has been inhibited due to the insufficient access to reliable electricity for most of Africa. The future outlook for this yet looks set to change dramatically, with African countries diversifying their energy portfolio. A good case in point is in Kenya. As of March 2015, Kenya's effective installed electricity capacity was 2177.1 MW, with supply primarily being sourced from hydroelectric and thermal sources. With connectivity to the national grid at just 28%. As of 8th June 2016, Kenya was the 4th largest geothermal energy developer in the world, possessing the largest geothermal plant in the world, capable of providing almost 20% of the nation's total power capacity (280MW Olkaria plant). Geothermal is just the tip of the iceberg, for years wind energy has contributed just 5.1MW to the national grid, but with the construction of the lake Turkana power project set to come online by July 2017 injecting 310MW or about 18% of current installed electricity generating capacity, a different ball game is about to commence. With Kenya's innovation and IT scene making waves worldwide, the incorporation of this into the energy scene has been quite successful with the M-Kopa model the latest crown jewel. Solar century and London distillers have held engagements to build the largest solar roof project in East Africa, almost 1 MWp. Kenya is currently the world leader in number of solar power systems installed per capita. With the Lamu coal power plant set to add 981.5 MW to the grid and Kenya aiming to replace some fossil fuel, electricity capacity, with nuclear energy (it is currently evaluating its grid system before considering the generation options). These are key stepping stones for an energy boom with an unequivocal industrial and economic boom. Considering the major infrastructural projects of rail, road and pipeline being undertaken with these energy prospects, the future is only brighter. The fact that most of the developed world economies are slowing down only serves to fuel the fact that Kenya and Africa's economic revolution is inevitable. A key indication that the next decades belong to Africa, at least from an economic stand point.

The shape of an installed solar concentrator (e.g. a heliostat) may differ from its original design due to manufacturing defects, structural/wind loads and thermal expansion. By measuring the shape of a solar concentrator, it is possible to account for the deviation in optical performance from its original design point. A method to measure concentrator shape needs to be fast, accurate, and not involve contact or interference with the reflective surface of the concentrator. State-of-the-art techniques include flux mapping, photogrammetry, and deflectometry using conventional cameras. This paper presents a study to characterise solar concentrator shapes using light-field imaging. Conventional cameras capture the light intensity of a point in a scene at a single point in the sensor, creating a two-dimensional image. A light field camera features multiple micro-lenses placed between the main lens and the sensor, providing many small images from slightly different angles in a single shot. This information is used to reconstruct the position of a light source in space. The advantage of this new technique to the ones mentioned above is that the light field camera is robust and self-contained, which allows easy-to-use application in heliostat fields. In this study, light-field camera measurements were performed with flat mirrors and a curved mirror under laboratory conditions. In order to resolve the surface of the mirror surfaces, several methods to impose contours of the mirror surface have been studied, including dirt, small water droplets, scattering of low-power laser light, and paper-marks. A wide range of camera-to-mirror distances between 43 cm and 5 m have been studied. Greater distances allow the capture of the entire surface, but decrease the precision of depth measurements. In order to obtain high precision measurements while being able to capture the entire surface, a compositing strategy has been developed, combining several light-field image measurements. The overall accuracy of the system was improved further by averaging measurements over several image frames. Subsequently, the reconstructed surface points have been fed to a ray-tracing algorithm realized in Matlab/Python. Results in this study are able to resolve the shape of small concentrators to sub-millimetre precision when taking pictures at a distance of 0.4 m.
