Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peranan Amonium thiosulfat dan Sodium thiosulfat sebagai bahan pengkhelat pada proses Fitoremediasi dengan menggunakan tanaman Paspalum conjugatum (Rumput Paitan). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode eksperimental yang dilakukan di lapangan pada bulan Mei sampai Juli 2017. Penelitian dirancang menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) dengan variasi perlakuan: PAT1 = pemberian Amonium thiosulfat sebanyak 1 gr, PAT2 = pemberian Amonium thiosulfat sebanyak 2 gr, PST1 = pemberian Sodium thiosulfat sebanyak 1 gr, PST2 = pemberia Sodium thiosulfat sebanyak 2 gr. Setiap perlakuan diulang sebanyak 3 kali sehingga diperoleh 12 unit percobaan. Parameter yang diamati dalam penelitian ini meliputi konsentrasi Hg pada tanaman, berat berangkasan, dan tinggi tanaman. Data hasil pengamatan dianalisis dengan menggunakan standar deviasi mean. Bahan pengkhelat Amonium thiosulfat lebih tinggi mengikat Hg di bandingkan dengan Sodium thiosulfat. Konsentrasi kadar total Hg tertinggi terdapat pada perlakuan Amonium thiosulfat dosis 2 gr/15 liter sebesar 1137,87 ppm. Semakin tinggi konsentrasi Hg pada tanah mengakibatkan pertumbuhan tanaman terhambat.Abstract: Ammonium thiosulfate and Sodium thiosulfate as chelating material in the Phytoremediation process using Paspalum conjugatum (Paitan Grass). The method used in this study is an experimental method conducted in the field from May to July 2017. The study was designed using Randomized Block Design (RBD) with a variety of treatments: PAT1 = giving 1 gr Ammonium thiosulfate, PAT2 = giving 2 gr Ammonium thiosulfate giving, PST1 = giving 1 gr Sodium thiosulfate, PST2 = giving 2 grams of Sodium thiosulfate. Each treatment was repeated three times to obtain 12 experimental units. The parameters observed in this study include the concentration of Hg in plants, the weight of stature, and plant height. Observation data were analyzed using the standard deviation of the mean. The chelating agent Ammonium thiosulfate is higher in binding to Hg compared to Sodium thiosulfate. The highest concentration of total Hg was found in Ammonium thiosulfate treatment with a dose of 2 gr / 15 liters of 1137.87 ppm. The higher the concentration of Hg on the soil resulted in stunted plant growth.

Nephrotoxicity frequently limits the dose of cisplatin to less than 120 mg/m2 per injection. Sodium thiosulfate is a neutralizing agent for cisplatin that protects against renal damage. To determine whether injection of thiosulfate would permit larger doses of cisplatin to be administered, a fixed 9.9-g/m2 dose of thiosulfate was given intravenously over three hours concurrently with escalating doses of cisplatin. Cisplatin was administered over the last two hours of the thiosulfate infusion. Using this technique, it was possible to escalate the cisplatin dose to 225 mg/m2 before dose-limiting toxicities were encountered. Comparison of cisplatin pharmacokinetics in patients treated with 202.5 mg/m2 plus thiosulfate to those in patients treated with 100 mg/m2 without thiosulfate indicated that there were no changes in the elimination rate constant, volume of distribution, or total body clearance of cisplatin. The total drug exposure for the plasma was approximately twofold at the higher cisplatin dose. This study demonstrates that concurrent administration of thiosulfate permits at least a twofold increase in dose and total exposure to cisplatin.

Sodium nitroprusside is an antihypertensive agent used frequently in the critical care setting. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a report that led to a labeling change emphasizing the pharmacokinetics of nitroprusside with metabolism to highly toxic cyanide. Although evidence validates that cyanogenesis occurs with nitroprusside administration, prevention and treatment of cyanide poisoning is rarely instituted in clinical practice. Simultaneous infusion of thiosulfate with nitroprusside provides the sulfur donor necessary to prevent cyanide accumulation. Cyanide combines with thiosulfate to form the less toxic sodium thiocyanate, which is then excreted. A 10:1 ratio of nitroprusside to thiosulfate in the infusion eliminates the possibility of cyanide intoxication without altering the efficacy of nitroprusside.

Due to the disadvantages of physiochemical methods for sulfidic spent caustic treatment, attentions are drawn to the environmental-friendly biotreatments including sulfur-oxidizing halo-alkaliphiles.Thioalkalivibrio versutusDSM 13738 was grown at alkaline (pH10) autotrophic medium with sodium carbonate/bicarbonate as the sole source of carbon and amended with sodium thiosulfate as the electron and energy source. The effect of various parameters including temperature (25-40 °C), pH (8-11), NaCl concentration (0.5-5 % w/v) and sodium thiosulfate concentrations (100-750 mM) was evaluated on bacterial growth and thiosulfate removal. This strain could eliminate sodium thiosulfate at very high concentrations up to 750 mM. The results showed that the highest specific growth rate was pH 9.5 and thiosulfate removal ofThioalkalivibrio versutusoccurred at pH 10.5. The optimum salt concentration for thiosulfate removal was 2.5 % w/v and 5 % NaCl and specific growth rate elevated 2.5% w/v. It was also specified that this strain thrives occurred in 37 °C and at 35 and 37 °C higher removal of thiosulfate. Following chemical oxidation of sulfide to thiosulfate, application ofThioalkalivibrio versutuscould be promising for spent caustic treatment. Since thiosulfate is utilized as an energy source, highest removal efficiency occurred at marginally different conditions compared to optimal growth.

Thiosulfate oxidation and mixotrophic growth with succinate or methanol plus thiosulfate was examined in nutrient-limited mixotrophic condition for Methylobacterium oryzae CBMB20, which was recently characterized and reported as a novel species isolated from rice. Methylobacterium oryzae was able to utilize thiosulfate in the presence of sulfate. Thiosulfate oxidation increased the protein yield by 25% in mixotrophic medium containing 18.5 mmol·L–1of sodium succinate and 20 mmol·L–1of sodium thiosulfate on day 5. The respirometric study revealed that thiosulfate was the most preferable reduced inorganic sulfur source, followed by sulfur and sulfite. Thiosulfate was predominantly oxidized to sulfate and intermediate products of thiosulfate oxidation, such as tetrathionate, trithionate, polythionate, and sulfur, were not detected in spent medium. It indicated that bacterium use the non-S4intermediate sulfur oxidation pathway for thiosulfate oxidation. Thiosulfate oxidation enzymes, such as rhodanese and sulfite oxidase activities appeared to be constitutively expressed, but activity increased during growth on thiosulfate. No thiosulfate oxidase (tetrathionate synthase) activity was detected.

Abstract Background Many publications described sodium thiosulfate used to prevent the renal toxicity induced by cisplatin hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. After around 60 or 90 minutes of hyperthermic chemotherapy, cisplatin was drained and then, sodium thiosulfate was infused by intravenous route. Sodium thiosulfate is used in two steps: a first step, at 9 g/m2 in 250 mL of 0.9 % sodium chloride over 10 minutes followed by a second step, at 12 g/m2 in 1000 mL of 0.9 % sodium chloride over 6 hours. The purpose of this work was to study the stability of sodium thiosulfate at 16 mg/mL in 0.9 % sodium chloride polyolefin bags 1000 mL and at 72 mg/mL in 0.9 % sodium chloride polyolefin bags 250 mL, at 25 °C, protected or unprotected from light. Methods Chemical stability was analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to a photodiode array detector after preparation and after 6-hour or 24-hour storage. The method was validated according to the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH). Physical stability was evaluated by visual and subvisual inspection (turbidimetry by UV spectrophotometry at 550 nm). Three bags for each condition were prepared. On each time of the analysis, three samples were prepared for each bag and analysed by HPLC. pH values were evaluated on each moment of the analysis. Results Sodium thiosulfate solutions diluted in 0.9 % sodium chloride at 16 and 72 mg/mL retained more than 95 % of the initial concentration during 24 hours. Concerning pH measurements, the maximum variation was 0.24 pH unit. No visual modification such as colour change, precipitation or gas formation was observed. The absorbance at 550 nm obtained for each sample was less than 0.010 AU. Conclusions Sodium thiosulfate solutions at 16 mg/mL in 1000 mL 0.9 % sodium chloride and at 72 mg/mL in 250 mL 0.9 % sodium chloride are stable physically and chemically over a period of 24 hours at 25 °C, with or without protection from light. This stability study allows the use of sodium thiosulfate in renal protection protocols during cisplatin hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

Uremic pruritus is a distressful complication of chronic kidney disease and results in impaired quality of life and higher mortality rates. Intravenous sodium thiosulfate has been reported to alleviate pruritus in hemodialysis patients. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the efficacy of intravenous sodium thiosulfate in patients with uremic pruritus. A systematic search of electronic databases up to June 2021 was conducted for randomized controlled trials that evaluated the clinical effects of sodium thiosulfate in the management of patients with uremic pruritus. Two reviewers selected eligible articles and evaluated the risk of bias; the results of pruritus assessment and uremic pruritus-related laboratory parameters in selected studies were analyzed. There are four trials published between 2018 and 2021, which include 222 participants. The sodium thiosulfate group displayed significant decrease in the pruritus score (standardized mean difference = −3.52, 95% confidence interval = −5.63 to −1.41, p = 0.001), without a significant increase in the adverse effects (risk ratio = 2.44, 95% confidence interval = 0.37 to 15.99, p = 0.35) compared to the control group. Administration of sodium thiosulfate is found to be a safe and efficacious complementary therapy in improving uremic pruritus in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Abstract Municipal wastewater effluents are one of the largest single effluent discharges in Canada. Chlorination of wastewater effluents is a widespread practice throughout Canada (excluding Quebec), the United States and parts of Europe. As chlorine in wastewater effluents is toxic to aquatic biota, dechlorination chemicals may be used to reduce residual chlorine concentrations to below 0.02 mg/L (as Cl2) as mandated by Canadian law. However, the potential aquatic health impacts of residual dechlorination chemicals must also be determined. Seven dechlorination agents (ascorbic acid, hydrogen peroxide, calcium thiosulfate, sodium sulfite, sodium thiosulfate, sodium metabisulfite, sodium bisulfite) were evaluated with regards to their 48 hour acute toxicity. Tests were conducted using Daphnia magna to identify the acute (48 h) toxicity affects of the dechlorination chemicals over a range of concentrations (0-200 mg/L). Sodium sulfite and thiosulfate were found to have the least aquatic mortality effects while hydrogen peroxide and calcium thiosulfate had the most deleterious effects.

Investigations of the cluster-coagulation model for some inorganic substances and mixtures of sodium thiosulfate with salts of elements (VI) of A, B groups have been carried out. The doping of sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate with sodium selenate, tellurate, molybdate and tungstate has been carried out. The thermodynamic parameters of associate formation processes between sodium thiosulfate and salts formed from oxygen-containing acids of selenium, tellurium, molybdenum and tungsten have been calculated. The amount of heat introduced by the modifier (selenate, tellurate, molybdate and tungstate of sodium) into the total heat-accumulating effect of the mixture Na2S2O3∙5H2O – Na2XO4 (X – Se, Te, Mo or W) mixture has been calculated. The number of n-particle clusters and the diameter of clusters that are formed in the melt of the Na2S2O3∙5H2O – Na2XO4 mixture have been calculated. It is shown that special effects of systems based on mixtures consisting from sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate and salts of selenium, telluric, molybdenum, tungsten acids could be explained by more excessive tendency of these structures to the hydrate formation, associative stability and polymerization for the reason that rare elements’ ions in anionic form stabilize associates of sodium thiosulfate with water molecules that leads to growth the heat storage capacity. The scientific and practical significance of this research refers to the probability of prediction physicochemical properties of modified heat-accumulating materials based on the cluster-coagulation model.

Abstract Toxicity of cisplatin can be decreased by concomitant administration of sodium thiosulfate, which perhaps chemically inactivates this platinum compound. We studied the disappearance of cisplatin and carboplatin in aqueous solutions of thiosulfate at 37 degrees C by means of liquid chromatography. At initial concentrations that were similar to therapeutic concentrations in plasma, both drugs disappeared, with half-lives of 66 and 537 min for cisplatin and carboplatin, respectively. At higher thiosulfate concentrations, as found in urine, the respective half-lives were 3.7 and 33.8 min. These values suggest that direct chemical interaction in the plasma compartment has limited therapeutic consequences, whereas the anti-toxic effect of thiosulfate might be explained by the rapid inactivation of cisplatin in the kidneys. Reaction products of cisplatin and thiosulfate bound instantaneously and mainly reversibly to plasma proteins. Protein-bound cisplatin was not released by added thiosulfate--which may explain why thiosulfate, to be effective, must be given in advance of and during cisplatin administration.

The cost of silver separation is lowered when ammonia and hydrazine hydrate are replaced with sodium thiosulfate and sodium dithionite in the process of extracting of metallic silver from copper anode slime. The overall environmental impact of two types of copper silver separation processes from anode slime has been analyzed\using the LCA method. Through the subdivision analysis, we found the raw materials or emission items that should be improved first. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) The life cycle environmental impact of the sodium thiosulfate process is much lower than the existing process; (2) The resource and environmental impacts of the sodium thiosulfate method are mainly in the fields of climate change, photochemical smog, and ionizing radiation, exceeding two-thirds of the impact on all of the resources and environment; (3) In terms of input and output items, the main impact of the new process on the resources and the environment is concentrated on the use of sodium hydroxide, accounting for 33.98% of the total equivalent, followed by sodium thiosulfate and sodium carbonate, respectively. These input–output items are the key fields that need attention in future technology improvement.

Abstract In microbiological water quality testing, sample dechlorination with sodium thiosulfate is recommended to ensure that results accurately reflect the water quality at sample collection. Nevertheless, monitoring institutions in low-resource settings do not always dechlorinate samples, and there is limited research describing how this practice impacts drinking water quality results. The effect of dechlorination on indicator bacteria counts was evaluated by spiking laboratory water with five Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentrations (104–108 CFU/100 mL), chlorinating at six doses (0–0.6 mg/L), holding samples with and without sodium thiosulfate for 5–7 hours, and enumerating E. coli by membrane filtration with m-lauryl sulfate media. Additionally, sub-Saharan African water suppliers enumerated thermotolerant coliform by membrane filtration in paired chlorinated water samples collected with and without sodium thiosulfate. Across all E. coli and chlorine doses in the laboratory, and all field tests, samples held without sodium thiosulfate had lower bacteria counts (p < 0.001). Additionally, chlorinated water supply samples held without sodium thiosulfate had an 87.5% false negative rate. Анотація:

The conventional cyanide leaching process is used to extract gold from a high copper gold concentrate. Because the copper associated minerals consume sodium cyanide in large quantities, the cost of the reagents is high and the economic benefit is not ideal. At the same time, a large number of cyanide tail slag are produced, which brings a series of environmental problems. In order to solve the environmental problems caused by excessive sodium cyanide consumption and cyanogen slag, the feasibility of leaching gold by thiosulfate in copper ammonia system was studied. The gold leaching rate of thiosulfate was increased to more than 90% by using the direct thiosulfate leaching process and pretreatment thiosulfate leaching process, which was close to the gold leaching index of sodium cyanide at the production site.

Анотація:

Objective: Evaluating the neutralization of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) by sodium thiosulfate in vitro, in different concentrations, in the prevention of para-chloroaniline (PCA) formation when in contact with CHX. Material and methods: It were collected 2 mL of NaOCl solution to 2.5% and to 6%, divided in eight groups according to the sodium thiosulfate concentration (1.0; 2.5; 5.0; 10%) (TSF). The tests were done in duplicate and in each plate, it was poured 2mL of TFS and the reaction was observed for 5 minutes. After, 2 mL of 2% Chlorhexidine (CHX) were pouring on the plates to verify the formation of PCA. The infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform was used to verify the presence of PCA, and, in each solution, the pH was verified with universal strip. Results: All analyzed samples presented presence of water and deuterium water, and there was not identification of the PCA presence. The pH result of the solutions was between 8 and 9. It was verified that in the increasing of the concentration of the TFS there was gradual formation of precipitated compound and increase of the turbidity of the final sample. Conclusion: TFS can be used as an intermediate irrigation solution to prevent the formation of para-chloroaniline in the combined use of NaOCl and CHX.

The potassium and rubidium thiosulfates (hydrates) considered in this work were originally obtained as by-products during several syntheses of mixed sulfido=oxido metallates. The interesting complexity of their structural chemistry has motivated us to investigate them in detail. The crystal structures of all title compounds have been determined using single-crystal X-ray data. The structure of the anhydrous potassium thiosulfate K2S2O3 (monoclinic, space group P21/c, a=1010.15(14), b=910.65(12), c=1329.4(2) pm, b =111.984(11)º, Z =8, R1=0.0665) exhibits two crystallographically different thiosulfate anions, overall coordinated by 9=10 potassium cations. Their packing in the structure leads to a complex structure with a pseudo orthorhombic unit cell. The structure of the anhydrous salt is discussed in comparison with the known even more complicated 1=3 hydrate K2S2O3·1/3H2O (monoclinic, space group P21/c, a=938.27(6), b=602.83(4), c=3096.0(2) pm, b =98.415(6)º, Z =12, R1=0.0327). Under the chosen experimental conditions, rubidium forms the monohydrate Rb2S2O3 ·H2O, which also crystallizes with a new, in this case less complex structure (monoclinic, space group C2/m, a=1061.4(1), b=567.92(4), c=1096.4(1) pm, b =97.40(1)º, Z =4, R1=0.0734). Its thiosulfate ions form double layers of equally oriented tetrahedral units. The bond lengths and angles of the thiosulfate ions in all title compounds and in the sodium salts used for comparison vary only very slightly (dS-S =199.8 - 203.0 pm, dS-O =144.8 - 147.4 pm), and the deviation from the ideal C3v symmetry is very small, despite their complex packing. The overall coordination number of the thiosulfate ions by the alkali cations (and water molecules) increases systematically with the ionic radius of the counter cations and the amount of water molecules. For all known alkali thiosulfates, both the conventional and the calculated effective coordination numbers (ECoN) of the alkali cations as well as the partial molar volumes of the cations and the water molecules are compared and discussed.

Some residents of Perth, Australia, receiving treated groundwater have complained of intermittent swampy, cooked vegetable odours in their drinking water. The compound primarily responsible is dimethyl trisulfide (CH3SSSCH3) which can be formed in the laboratory from the reaction of methyl iodide with thiosulfate (in the presence of iodine or sulfide) or with polysulfide (Sn2−). Addition of chlorine or sulfide to pre-formed S-methylthiosulfate (produced from the reaction of methyl iodide with sodium thiosulfate) at concentrations possibly expected in water supplies did not produce the swampy odour or only formed it slowly. Dimethyl trisulfide was formed upon the addition of methyl iodide to samples from each water supply system examined, even from those not prone to the formation of swampy odour, suggesting each contained polysulfide. Polysulfides and the reducing agents sodium oxalate, sodium borohydride and sodium thiosulfate reacted with dimethyl trisulfide in solution, removing 50-100% of that originally present.

Five patients on maintenance hemo dialysis for more than five years, who had tumoral calcifications, were treated by sodium thiosulfate for three to IS months. Four patients with periarticular and soft-tissue calcifications achieved regression of varying degrees and the motion of the adjacent joints was considerably improved. The fifth patient had calcification of penis; sodium thiosulfate produced early relief of symptoms and later complete disappearance of the calcification.

Densities and viscosities of R[xNaSCN + (1 - x)Na2S2O3] + (1 - R)H2O systems with R = 0.05, 0.10, 0.14, and 0.18 were measured as functions of mole fraction, x (= 0.0-1.0), and temperature (293.15 <= T/K <= 323.15). A significant mixed anion effect has been observed within the temperature range of the study. The normalized viscosity isotherms were found to detect the mixed anion effect ~1.2 to 3.7 times more than the simple viscosity isotherms. The progressive replacement of S2O32- ions by SCN- ions causes the systems to be less structured and S2O32- ions polarized Na+ ions more towards themselves than towards the SCN- ions. Both these effects govern the variation of the viscosity with mole fraction, x. The mixed anion effect was found to vanish at around R = 0.0106.Key words: mixed anion effect, sodium thiocyanate, sodium thiosulfate, viscosity.
