Анотація:

<p>Arun Joshi presents socio-cultural conflicts between two different societies. One society is material driven and backed by the modern state apparatus like police, courts, etc. while the other is subsistence driven and is at the bottom in the hierarchy of the modern state. Indian tribal societies have been exploited right from the colonial period into the post-independence times. These two societies differ as follows: the tribal society lives on subsistence looks at Nature as a space for socio-economic, political, cultural and community, while the urban materialistic world perceives Nature as a resource to be exploited. This primordial difference has manifested as a socio-cultural conflict between these two societies. This may be due to the mutually exclusive and incorrigible nature of their social constructs which trigger perceptual obfuscation of symbiotic living. What appears to be an objective reality for one appears as subjective to the other and vice versa. This paper studies the strangeness of Billy Biswas, the protagonist of the novel in the socio-cultural milieu of conflicting realities.</p>

Анотація:

Socio-cultural realities of the beginning of the XXI century predetermine the need for another return to the consideration of the phenomenon of man. The world created by the world of powerful technologies, which was supposed to improve and facilitate its life, did not realize the expected, but deep and comprehensive influence on its spirituality, world outlook, on the main direction of activity and creativity. Philosophers, theologians and religious leaders pay attention to the paradoxical state of modern anthropocentric society, which, with the center of a person, begins to act against it. Modern technologies open up diverse opportunities for the development of intellectual potential, and at the same time simplify the manipulation of consciousness, promote individualization of society and the growth of loneliness, undermine the notion of human uniqueness and uniqueness, depreciate the value of human life and transform people into an element of commodity relations. Understanding a person by the modern Catholic Church is extremely relevant not only for religious studies, but also for the modern Ukrainian society as a whole, as the socio-cultural situation in the country undergoes a profound anthropological crisis.

Анотація:

The use of culture and art for socio-economic development and the formation of a positive image of Ukraine abroad require highly skilled specialists. The cultural development of society depends to a large extent on the effectiveness of artistic education, which functions as a streamlining of spiritual life and aesthetic education of a person. The article emphasizes that the characteristic feature of the artistic institutions of higher education in modern conditions is the ability to take into account the demands of society, to carry out an assessment of all internal and external factors that provide favourable conditions for their normal functioning. It is also necessary to take into account the requirements of cultural and artistic institutions to the quality of training specialists and to make carefully thought out management decisions. It is emphasized that the specificity of the preparation of creative personnel at the level of postgraduate education in artistic higher educational establishments requires further development of the normative base, the establishment of clear requirements for the competences of the applicant of the degree of doctor of arts. In this context, it becomes relevant to study the problems of artistic education as a component of public culture and cultural policy of the state, and allows considering possible ways of development of artistic higher educational institutions, taking into account their peculiarities.

Анотація:

The relevance of the study lies in the need to find a solution to the problem of training music directors in Ukraine under the influence of a paradigm shift in theatrical art, which requires the harmonization of Ukrainian and European educational systems. The scientific novelty of the article is in determining the ways of professional education modernization in accordance to the rector O. Tymoshenko’s strategic vision of the ‘musical directing’ specialization development at the Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music of Ukraine. The purpose of the study is to determine the strategic directions of training a musical theatre director in the socio-cultural realities of independent Ukraine, to predict the prospects for their further transformations in the context of European integration of art and educational directing schools. Applied research methods were: culturological - to analyze the impact of socio-cultural challenges of today on changing the paradigm of theatrical art; system analysis - to determine the strategic directions of training a music director in the context of O. Tymoshenko's conceptual vision; structural and functional - to determine the model of education of a music director in the context of integrative links between specializations in the implementation of joint projects. Evolutionary changes in music directing education which are connected to European integration processes in culture and art were considered. It was found that the paradigm of theatrical art is influenced by the socio-cultural challenges of today, which have both positive and negative consequences and require modernization of professional training of music directors. It was found out that: positive results consist in exchange of achievements in the field of musical theater, growth of art skills, joint international projects, innovative searches in the context of competition-festival activity, negative - in decrease of national repertoire in comparison with foreign, partial loss of national art identity and change of value orientations from permissive-cognitive to entertaining-hedonistic, creation of art performances on show-market of consumer products. Prospects for further research related to the analysis of world directing and educational systems, creative and pedagogical work of iconic figures of musical theatre and their extrapolation to Ukrainian realities were predicted.

In the face of contemporary external and internal threats patriotic education of citizens becomes a priority in ensuring national security of the country. History of Russia shows that the Patriotic idea was one of the significant factors in ensuring the consolidation of society. Underestimation of patriotism can lead to the reduction of socio-economic, spiritual and cultural foundations for the development of society and the state. One of the main objectives of the current domestic policy of the Russian state is the preservation of cultural and historical heritage and traditional system of values. The basis for these values should be patriotism.

Анотація:

The present paper is an attempt to explore the entrepreneurship movement in North Eastern Region of India based on the primary data collected from the remote areas of Manipur. It also tries to highlight the importance and role played by the socio-cultural factors and its dimension in the process of motivating the rural people in region, the origin of market, origin and concept of currency and use of money, myth associated with the concept of earning and hospitality given to the customers, etc. The paper reflects the ground realities of how the cultural sentiment of the region are related with the spirit of entrepreneurship in developing their entrepreneurial activities as an option or an alternative way to eke out from poverty and various economic problems for sustaining their livelihood.

Анотація:

The article is devoted to the fundamental problems of human philosophy and, at the same time, to the philosophy of culture as a product of its spiritual movement. Presented in modern science by separately developed theoretical discourses, in reality the aesthetic and cultural aspects are in relation of continuous interdependence, associated with the development of their generic basis – the human core of essence. The concept of aes- thetics, which owes its emergence to the activity-based approach to the analysis of human essence, the understanding of the aesthetic and the moral as fundamental activities as the basis and conditions of human creation, suffers from unjustified reduction. Formed in the bosom of philo- sophical-anthropic universals, the culture studies, which should have been a methodologically analytical platform, a tendency towards factuality, moving to fleeting meanings, has revealed. This affected the optics of the aesthetic vision: the projection of its consideration became actual artistic practices, taken from the perspective of artistic instrumental form formation, abstracted from the defining human-motivated meaning. Left "off screen", it brings the analysis of contemporary artistic realities to superficial ones, to a simple statement of their sociocultural certainty and differ- ences from what was known previously. The very life of the "aesthetic" – a condition and measure of the human essence development – provides such studies incapable of true expertise, primarily of determining the actual cultural weight of the artistic and aesthetic phenomenon and the pro- spects of its future existence. The urgency of recognizing this problem and its obligatory subsequent solution is one of the urgent tasks of culture studies on the way to its ultimate establishment as the center of humanitarian values. The understanding of the "aesthetic" as a human-forming condition necessarily expands the space of its cultural examination as well. It en- compasses a bunch of actions and inner movements carried out in a human way. Moreover, the world of art needs to be taken into account when studying the presence of aesthetics in the general sphere of sociocultural practices. Whereas art as an aesthetic phenomenon is homogeneous in relation to the aesthetic, in the extra-artistic sphere the aesthetic gets into a homogeneity of a different order, namely into the root structure of the essential human self-development.

Анотація:

This paper focuses on the relationship between the reactivation of the built environment and social innovation. This theme is investigated through the triad: "project, technology and creativity", which at the operational level of research, leads to the paradigm of the active protection of patrimony. The research documents possible ways of using common goods to produce lasting socio-spatial effects, strengthening the ecosystem of creative and cultural businesses and contributing to qualitative improvement. The aim is to understand how it is possible to trigger a virtuous renewal process of both the content activities and the containing structures, combining the production of new culture and the regeneration of spaces. This process should be nourished by the continuous exchange between tangible and intangible culture, public and private interest and the crossover between old and new cultural production. Special attention is given to initiatives that support the renewal of vocations and the building of new strategies for various realities in crisis.

ABSTRACT This study examines the social and political relevance of the genre of radio drama. The study focuses on the production of the programme Radio Theatre that features one-act plays, which air every week for the state broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). The study engages with the tension created by the programme’s production in a state broadcaster, and the fact that Radio Theatre plays draw their themes from everyday life. This tension has enabled us to question the validity of cultural productions such as Radio Theatre, which, although informed by ‘official’ discourse, can be read in the realm of popular cultural productions. Using the theory of the moral story, the study has attempted to look at the various ways in which Radio Theatre addresses its perceived audiences. The first chapter engages with the theoretical framework and literature review concerned with radio drama, broadcasting and the context of Radio Theatre’s production. The second chapter explores the history of radio drama’s production in Kenya in more detail. As such, it engages with the politics that informed radio broadcasting in Kenya, from the colonial era up to the postcolonial period. The third chapter looks at how Radio Theatre plays have been used to promote the state’s agenda of national unity in Kenya. Looking at a play that uses marriage as its dominant narrative, the chapter explores the ways in which Radio Theatre fulfils its role as an educational drama. However, a detailed reading of the play in question reveals several gaps that offer spaces for counter-reading for the imagined audiences. The fourth chapter is an exploration of Radio Theatre’s engagement with sexual morality. The chapter draws from the Kenyan social context, which defines sexual morality using traditional and Christian structures. As such, the chapter engages with the melodramatic presentations of four plays which deal with issues of marriage and infidelity. The last chapter looks at Radio Theatre’s exploration of developmental themes, a fact that points towards collaborations that KBC has made with NGO organizations interested in similar agendas. The chapter analyzes five plays that look into themes of HIV/AIDS, forced marriages and infertility. Arguing that such plays seek to encourage self-development, the chapter looks at theories that have been used to analyze the developmental values of soap operas in developing countries. The concluding chapter offers a summary of the study, and possible ways in which a study such as this could be expanded

This book examines some of the challenges facing older people, given a context of rising life expectancy, cuts to the welfare state, and widening economic and social inequalities. It explores precarity and ageing from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, critical perspectives, and contexts. Although cultural representations and policy discourses depict older people as a group healthier and more prosperous than ever, many older people experience ageing amid insecurities that emerge in later life or are carried forward as a consequence of earlier disadvantage. The collection of chapters develops a distinctive approach to understanding the changing cultural, economic and social circumstances that create precarity for different groups of older people. The aim of the book is to explore what insights the concept of precarity might bring to an understanding of ageing across the life course, especially in the context of the radical socio-political changes affecting the lives of older people. In doing so, it draws attention both to altered forms of ageing, but also to changing social and cultural contexts, and realities that challenge the assumption that older people will be protected by existing social programmes or whatever resources that can be marshalled privately.

Until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, historians knew relatively little about the secretive world of communist states and parties. Since then, the opening of state, party and diplomatic archives of the former Eastern Bloc has released a flood of new documentation. The thirty-five essays in the Handbook, written by a highly international team of scholars, draw on this new material to offer a global history of communism in the twentieth century. In contrast to many histories that concentrate on the Soviet Union, it is genuinely global in its coverage, paying particular attention to the Chinese Revolution. It is ‘global’, too, in the sense that the essays seek to integrate history ‘from above’ and ‘from below’, to trace the complex mediations between state and society, and to explore the social and cultural as well as the political and economic realities that shaped the lives of citizens fated to live under communist rule. The essays reflect on the similarities and differences between communist states in order to situate them in their socio-political and cultural contexts and to capture their changing nature over time. Where appropriate, they also reflect on how the fortunes of international communism were shaped by the wider economic, political and cultural forces of the capitalist world. The Handbook provides an informative introduction for those new to the field and a comprehensive overview of the current state of scholarship for those seeking to deepen their understanding.

Abstract The events unfolding in Syria since spring 2011 have led to a thorough transformation of the intellectual and artistic space in which Syrian authors, filmmakers, and artists move. Starting from an overview of the connections of institutions, artists, and works that form this contemporary space of cultural production, this chapter goes on to consider the problems existing theoretical conceptions of such spaces from the sociology of arts encounter when faced with the empirical realities of the Syrian case. It shows that the transnational, unstable, and often transient nature of these formations and their links with large-scale socio-political changes, such as wars, are difficult to grasp with conceptual toolkit developed on the model of the unusually stable spaces of production of Western Europe and the US.

This chapter explores the reception of the Western concept of press freedom by Chinese intellectuals when they first encountered it at the turn of the twentieth century. It argues that, during this process of knowledge transfer, the meaning of press freedom as received by Chinese intellectuals was different from Western conceptions at that time. It shows how the introduction of this concept was closely related to the developing realities of Chinese society and echoed Chinese social and cultural pursuits in the late nineteenth century. Due to their specific socio-cultural milieu, Chinese intellectuals misinterpreted the moral discourse and liberal meanings of the Western concept of freedom of the press.

In All Sorts and Conditions of Men Walter Besant focuses his novelistic gaze on what he perceived as the neglected “romance” and “possibilities” of the East End of London (as opposed to its more horrific and tragic realities), and famously forwarded a utopian, “cultural solution” to the apparently mind-numbing monotony of East End existence. What is generally missed in the critical approaches to All Sorts and Conditions of Men are the subtle ways in which Besant’s socio-cultural “focus” (the respectable, but dull and neglected East End) and “solution” (cultural philanthropy and paternalistic economic relations) reflect Besant’s attempt to work through and elaborate a kind of relational and perspectival ethics through the generic hybridity (and perhaps, ultimately, limitations) of an “urban romance.”

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relation between orality and literacy in some of the expressive forms linked to the suburban summer leisure during Saint Petersburg “Belle Époque”. In particular, I will consider a forgotten corpus of texts and practices, somehow halfway between folklore and literature, cultural production and consumption, that mirrored and filled free time in dacha settlements, allowing the encounter between different socio-cultural realities (summer dwellers and “natives”) and contributing in many ways to the weakening of the boundaries between the “elitist” and the “popular” in the artistic culture of the time. The analysis of these materials, despite their aesthetic marginality, gives us a new vision “from the bottom up” of the pre-revolutionary dacha culture: a rapidly modernising landscape in which still fluid social bodies meet and fight in order to obtain their “right to the city”.

Adolescents' obesity is a major concern in our modern life that could lead to significant increase in the rate of obese future generations and consequently in the health budget. The ASSO (Adolescence Surveillance System for Obesity prevention) project in Italy is tackling this new pandemic using the new e-technology through a multi facets monitoring system on life style including food consumptions, meal patterns and habits, alcohol, smoking, physical activity, fitness and sedentariness, and biological/genetic, and socio-cultural/environmental characteristics of adolescents. The project has been recently piloted in the South of the country. This chapter summarizes the design and structure of the ASSO system, its implementation and the results of an evaluation process for its possible extension to the whole Italian territory and to other European realities as a national surveillance system.

Language change has always reflected transformations of socio-cultural realities. However, in modern Japan, change in ‘the Japanese language’ in its conception as a monolithic vehicle of Japaneseness has been frequently perceived as a deterioration of linguistic substance, and by extension, as an erosion of order and culture. In this paper, software-based corpus linguistics methodology is applied to a corpus of newspaper articles within the framework of discourse analysis, with the aim of describing discourse actors and extracting pragmatic idiosyncrasies of the newspaper-mediated public metalinguistic discourse centred on language decline. My findings suggest that several pragmemes can be correlated with one or more of the main groups of discourse actors. These include the use of symbolic language, implications, objectifying language, and the construction of change as something happening (only) in the present.

The article states the topicality of the research of Soviet childhood in the Republic of Moldova, the degree of its research, the sources and the main issues proposed for elucidation. It is emphasized that the research of the Soviet childhood is part of the interference of the ethnology of Sovietness and childhood ethnology. The works of researchers Margaret Mead and Philip Aries serve as an important theoretical and reference support in the research of topics related to childhood in general. Despite the fact that there are many sources for research on Soviet childhood, this was not the subject of a separate study. The research of Soviet childhood will allow the presentation of children in the context of political and socio-economic realities of the Moldovan SSR. It will also contribute to a better understanding of the ethnic processes carried out in the Moldovan SSR in which new social and ethno-cultural identities were formed. The research of the proposed topic will contribute to the approach to social history, as well as to the development of the anthropology of the Soviet society, the ethnology of the Sovietness – a direction in development both in the post-Soviet space and in the Western one.

In the new economic and epidemiological climate, the tourism industry is becoming a political and economic priority for Russia’s development. Domestic tourism resources shall be used to the maximum extent whereas patterns and models of international tourism shall be comprehended anew and reformatted. Given the increasing introduction of technology into the fabric of human life and the associated political decisions in the fields of professional employment in tourism and socio-cultural services, the article poses the problem of dialogue between man and machine, and predicts a new dimension of human nature. The phenomenological methodology and analytical approach embraced in the article allows us to argue that engineering content, the technical, the machine, ceases to be a useful service tool to serve human desires and needs. The ‘technical’ becomes a means and a way of shaping ‘new images of the world, values and realities’. New types of social connections and relations arise, in which technical items interact with humans ‘as equals’, and thereby often substitute living interlocutors and partners. Hence the social relationship concept expands. The tourism, hospitality and entertainment industry is concentrating on the changing role of the technical in human life. Through tourism and consumer services, a new type of individuality is being formed, for which the technical becomes an ‘additional living organ’ of natural human nature.

Mining operations are an essential part of Industrial Heritage. They provide an important reference in order to understand changing past realities, relationships between groups and reconfiguration in the communication between regions whose consequences still remain reference. These realities and relationships have led to the current socio- economic and political framework, which is projected into the future. The documentation of physical vestiges and machinery, now obsolete, is a metaphor that serves to illustrate and understand the past from our present perspective. Threedimensional models from the fusion of different techniques and physical structures contextualization allow to simulatethe mechanisms to promote sustainable tourism as paradigms of a modernity that only serves the immediate appearances. Our approach for documentation and simulation of mechanisms for the extraction and the treatment of mineral is provided as graphical support to understand a reality that goes beyond the “ThematicPark” approach. Moreover, the visualization provides a metaphor for the destruction of natural, physical and human resources of entire areas doomed to depopulation and disappearance. This also opens the door to broader developments that can use multimedia resources to support an all-embracing narrative experience.
