The topic of analysis are socio-cultural imaginaries of the pandemic. The assumption is that the pandemic may be characterized by reference to the imaginaries and system of knowledge related to the disease as well as is located in modern and postmodern imaginaries of risk, post-Anthropocentrism and trajectory of socio-cultural trauma creation process. The socio-cultural exemplifications of the presented thesis are transmitted by the media representations of the Covid-19 pandemic. The paper is composed of three main parts. The first one analyses the notions of an imaginary and socio-cultural trauma representation, the second part presents in the light of sociological and humanistic theories some selected exemplifications of pandemic representations and the third part is a summary.

This work aimed to analyze the socio-motor and cultural representations present in the circle game, called CACURI, typical of the Sateré-Mawé/AM People. Under the focus of motor Praxiology we can define Cacuri as a socio-motor activity characterized as CAI in the classification of P. Parlebas, that is, it is performed with Companion, in the presence of Adversary and without Instability in the physical surroundings. In view of the theories of corporeity we can perceive the forms of socio-cultural representations and from this look it is undeniable that children learn by playing, recreating their day life, without any conscious intention of a productive survival activity, only by simply copying adult life. Therefore we are faced with another point to be analyzed in the face of corporeity, because fishing with Cacuri is carried out by the men of the community and the game is typical of the girl’s imaginary world.

This paper is an attempt to study the representation of socio-cultural life in Kamala Markandaya’s Bombay Tiger. Being a leading post-independent Indian novelist, Kamala Markandaya has candidly portrayed Indian social, cultural and political life through her novels. She has rightly reflected these aspects in the work Bombay Tiger. Her description of various aspects and dimensions of cultural life is not imaginary and based on some literature, but it is based on carefully observed traditions and depicted cultural values and ideas. Soon after the death of Kamala Markandaya her daughter Kim Oliver found a typewritten copy of her novel and it was published posthumously with the title ‘Bombay Tiger’ in 2008. Charles R. Larson, one of the close friends of Markandaya and Professor of Literature, American University, Washington, DC has written an introduction to novel Bombay Tiger (2008) where he writes: Reading Bombay Tiger twenty years after Kamala Markandaya began writing the novel is a kind of revelation – especially for what it says about contemporary India” (Larson xii). Although Markandaya lived in abroad she kept in touch with the India. She actively read English newspapers which provided excellent coverage of occurrences in the commonwealth in general and India in particular. It has been rightly said that Kamala Markandaya’s “Sense of India was always extraordinarily vivid, filled with rich vitality, and imaginative in the way of all great writers (and especially novelists) who have been connected to place (Larson xii).

The aim of the study is to comprehend in a theoretical manner the principles of opera as a synthetic genre, namely taking into account the symbiosis of the properties related to the plot and storyline and musical properties themselves. The paper examines the development of opera in modern realities, the phenomenon of hybridity and openness of the genre. The author focuses on the mixed nature of opera as a result of the search for new means of expression. The scientific novelty of the study lies in defining modern opera as a hybrid, mixed genre, which together with modern technologies, means of performance and interpretation creates new contexts of musical expression, temporality and imaginary space. As a result, it has been determined that the evolutionary movement of opera has a centuries-old history and has always consisted of the confrontation of the new and the conservative, the elitist and the democratic, while opera was able to absorb the “intonation vocabulary of a specific era” and remain viable.

The location analytics industry has the potential to stimulate critical sociological discussions concerning the credibility of data analytics to enact new spatial classifications and metrics of socio-economic phenomena. Key debates in the sociology of geodemographics are revisited in this article in light of recent developments in algorithmic culture to understand how location analytics impacts the structural contexts of classification and relevance in digital marketing. It situates this within a locative imaginary, where marketers are experimenting with consolidating the epistemes of behavioural targeting, classification and performance evaluation in urban environments through spatial analytics of movement. This opens up future research into the political and cultural economies of relevance in media landscapes and the social shaping of valuable subjects by third-party data brokers and analytics platforms that have become matters of public and regulatory concern.

With the depiction of ethnic customs and the further cultivation of ethnic culture, the films of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang have formed a unique cultural system and cultural influence. The film Balloon, directed by Pema Tseden, has made multidimensional presentations and interpretations to the three orders theory of Lacan, that is the “the real order” from the original id, “the imaginary order” from the self-mirror and the “symbolic order” from the socio-linguistic and cultural system. It can be said that the Three Orders Theory enables the film Balloon directed by Pema Tseden to show the local culture of Xinjiang to the audience from an internal perspective of subjectivity and self-expression.

The relevance of the problem of the article is connected not only with the interest of modern literary studies in its historical-literary, socio-literary, imagological aspects. It is also actualized by the global “friend-or-foe” conflict that has escalated in the 21st century. Of particular interest in this regard is the Siberian socio-cultural space, which has been formed and continues to be formed as a transboundary area as a result of constant migrations and interactions of different cultures, and Siberian literature, which reflects this complex reality in texts of different genres, types, and genera, and simultaneously forming it. A special place in the verbal culture of the region belongs to spiritual literature, initially the most important factor in the formation of the cultural landscape of Siberia, which authoritative philological works prove. However, the consideration of the heritage of the Siberian Orthodox clergy, taking into account the reflection in it of the transboundary nature of the cultural landscape of Siberia and its influence on the formation of the latter, has never become an object of scientific consideration. Defining Siberian spiritual literature as the object of research, the author means works in line with the Christian worldview created by the Siberian Orthodox clergy: representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, most often transferred to Siberia from the central regions of Russia, as well as Orthodox missionaries traveling to Siberia and living there with the aim of spreading Christianity. The corpus of Siberian spiritual literature of the second half of the 19th century, which certainly expands our ideas about the composition and boundaries of Siberian literature of the pre-revolutionary period, reflects the construction of the Siberian socio-cultural space in a very peculiar way – within the framework of imaginary and social geography. In these texts, Siberia appears as a space personally perceived by the author, as a landscape generated by the perception of the text, and as an institutionally structured space in which literature is considered as one of the interacting socio-cultural fields, and therefore as an instrument for the formation of the cultural landscape of the territory (including its literary process), regional identity, and as an organizer of social interactions. According to the results of the analysis, the author argues that the presented model of reflection of the cultural landscape of Siberia in the spiritual Siberian literature allows expanding the concept “transboundary area”. The concept helps describe the most important characteristics of the landscape – multilayeredness and discreteness, as well as options for interactions within it, which are the most important factor in building this landscape, achieving its stability, preserving identity in conditions of constant transformations. It is also important to emphasize the material on which the proposed model was built – spiritual Siberian literature, which opens new pages in the history of the Siberian transboundary area.

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, hundreds of thousands of Haitian agricultural laborers arrived in Cuba seeking employment in the expanding sugar industry. Historically, Haitian cane cutters were marginal and occupied the lowest socio-economic status in Cuban society. Until relatively recently, the maintenance of Haitian spiritual beliefs, music, dance, and language in Cuba were associated with rural isolation and poverty. Today however, the continuation of Haitian customs is no longer linked with isolation, but exactly the opposite: performance troupes, heritage festivals, art exhibitions, the circulation of religious specialists, collaborations with research centers and academia, endorsement by music promoters, and the tourism industry. Cubans of Haitian heritage have found innovative ways to transform the abject into the exotic, and are currently gaining a public voice in cultural production, particularly through folkloric performance.

The creative personality potential is a person's personal characteristic, and not a plurality of her personal rice, human individuality is unique and unique, and its implementation involves the creation of a new, nonexistent previously. The characteristic of creative potential is to identify its own individuality, which is expressed in emotions, feelings. The creativity is always involved in the original and non-standard tools, they are combined with already existing, create new options, which are then used in practice. The realization of the creative potential of the individual is associated with the mechanisms of its intellectual, cognitive activity. Personality, which, in our opinion, is able to realize more own resources in their lives, which sets themselves aimed by far goals, produces a vital strategy, increases its creative potential. One of the factors of the development of the creative potential of the individual is a developed imagination. Forming an imaginary image, a person applies an existing preliminary experience, analyzes the situation, develops a direction of action, creates a new image, sometimes by accident. The components of the creative potential of the individual include her spirituality. In creative activity, a person realizes his ability, reveals the enormous possibilities of spiritual potential, which is especially important in our time, when a person is offered numerous vital self-determination and here it is important to carry out the correct choice, especially if applicable to value orientations.

Abstract The intersection of global population aging and technological trends in e-health, robotics, artificial intelligence, and mobile technologies has led to the emergence of “AgeTech” as a way to improve the health and well-being of older people. While this might be seen as an almost deterministic process of technological change, the visioning, development and implementation of technology is essentially a creative and socially-situated process. This requires us to understand AgeTech as a socio-technical imaginary, examining the intersecting spheres of social action and technological development. This idea of technological development as a creative process, runs counter to an idea of technology in purely rational and instrumental terms and brings into play cultural, political and behavioural factors. Our symposium examines the socio-technical imaginary of AgeTech in three papers: Paul Higgs and Chris Gilleard discuss Fourth Ageism and the Technological Imaginary of Long-term care and argue that the problematizing of aging present in current thinking needs to be challenged at the conceptual stage of technological development. Andrew Sixsmith et al will present on A Global AgeTech Agenda, with a particular focus on how AgeTech development and innovation should connect with global initiatives such as the UN’s Strategic Development Goals. Mei Lan Fang et al will take an Ethical Perspective on AgeTech to discuss some of the complex challenges around the creation and use of technologies and argue that culture change is needed within the research and innovation communities to develop ethically grounded AgeTech. This is a Technology and Aging Interest Group Sponsored Symposium.

The concept of the ‘Great Chain of Being’, which influences the narrative style of the Renaissance Period of English Literature, depicts the hierarchical state of the old English Society. Suggestively, it’s a society driven by class/status and its attendant structures of inequality, discrimination and oppression. Hence, literary narratives of this period revolve round the travails of Kings and nobles, while subjecting the common men to the background. Subsequently, the esoteric state of the society, which was usually captured from the third person point of view, helps to question the place of truth in these literary narratives, as they could be liken to glossary reports from spectators, devoid of participant’ direct contribution(s). However, with the writing(s) of Kazuo Ishiguro, an Asian-British, there comes a direct feel of participant’s contribution in his narratives as he deconstructs the style of the old traditional English narratives in his novel, The Remains of the Day. Consequently, with the application of the first-person point of view in his novel, readers could explore the socio-cultural dispositions of every society and individual within the purview of ethics, politics and development. In furtherance, this study gives a historicized spatial alternate or temporal reality of an Old English society system - a system anchored on classism, professionalism and superficial orderliness devoid of ‘social interactions’ and freedom, especially for the workmen or common men. The emergence of an American Lord after the death of the English Lord gives a contrastive alternative pattern against that of the English. Hence, this alternate reflection of the American presence further deconstructs every long-held tradition in Darlington’s Hall as the author reveals that perceptions are influenced by cultural ingenuity which borders on the socio-cultural/socio-political formation of every society and individuals.

This article examines the material and socio-cultural mechanisms by which everyday urban and rural walking is controlled, regulated, limited, or affected, as seen through the lens of nineteenth century visual arts with support of literary and historical accounts. Inspired by the interdisciplinary research on walking, I discuss three cases of different cultural and historical backgrounds and examine therein the instances in which the experience of walking cannot fully take place, or its movements are shaped or controlled by real or imaginary forces, either external or internal, or even by other modes of transportation: 1) C. G. Carus’ socially constrained travelling in Italy in 1828, leading up to his painting Erinnerung an Neapel, 2) the history of the Pont Neuf and the use and regulation of Paris footways through lithographs and ‘impressionist’ paintings in the Third Republic, and 3) the motif of the ‘riukuaita’ (round-pole fence) in lithographs, landscape paintings and photographs during the Golden Age of Finnish Art. Thus, art objects are considered as both artworks and historical documents that illuminate the imaginary and actuality of historical events related to migration, bordering processes, and control of mobility.

Purpose of the study: The purpose of the present study is to specify the notion of socio-cultural continuum seen through the choral art as it developed throughout independence in Ukraine and to identify its main tendencies as drivers of choral art development. In this regard, the research tasks are to investigate the meaning of the concepts of “continuum”, “socio-cultural continuum,” and to identify the main socio-cultural tendencies that, in our opinion, have the most significant influence on the development of choral art. Methodology: This study used a meta-analysis approach to solve the issues raised in the research. Reference sources, peer-reviewed databases like Education Resources Information Centre (ERIC), Scopus, Arts & Humanities Database, the Choral Scholar (online journal), Google Scholar, together with open-source-published researches and books (published either in Ukrainian or English) were used to obtain the relevant information. Main findings: It was found, that the socio-cultural continuum in Ukraine of the period of independence emerges as a complex hierarchical system of phenomena characterized by an inextricable link between the Spatio-temporal parameters of human beings, society, and culture. Applications of this study: Interpreting this concept in relation to the development of choral art as an imaginary model of a single socio-cultural space-time in Ukraine (region) occurring throughout the independence period in all the continuous hierarchical multiplicity of its phenomena related to the functioning of choral art identified several major trends that, in our opinion, were influenced by the intensity and nature of such development. This period, as a transition period characterized by a change in outlook, the revival of previously forbidden traditions, and the emergence of new socio-cultural trends not only intensified the development but also caused several challenges that Ukrainian society faced. Novelty/Originality of this study: This scientific exploration was an attempt to understand the theoretical essence of this continuum and its tendencies, which in the future will allow knowing more about their positive and negative orientations and ways.

Spatiality occupies pivotal status in the thematic orientation of Native American literature. Native American male writers in general and female writers, in particular consider the issues of space and place with reference to issues of identity, separation and conflict with Euro-Americans. The present paper aims to study the portrayal of real and imaginary places in Louise Erdrich's Tracks. The study maintains that Erdrich infuses energy into the places portrayed in the novel. Hence, places do not remain static or flat rather; they assume dynamic characteristics that not only trigger action but also become a character in the development of the plot. The present study concludes that textual and imagined places should not be taken as mere portrayals of topographic structures; rather, they explain the socio-cultural paradigm of a given social order.

The gender digital divide is a well-known research and policy topic. Policy discourses emphasise the inclusion aspect focusing on equal opportunities and economic empowerment. Critical analyses of the inclusion narrative stress its universalist and normative perspective which implicitly excludes and determines what gender technology inclusion means. This contribution focuses on an alternative perspective developed in Latin America: appropriation of technologies. This approach foregrounds the socio-cultural and economic inequalities present in the Global South. Based on a case study of a transfeminist IT community from Argentina, this paper analyses the transformative aspects of this collective’s imaginary and practices. It argues that this approach is relevant to other Global South contexts where similar communities exist and provides us with a better understanding of possibilities and limits of inclusion in the digital technologies sector.

Chapter II outlined how literary pastoral scenography makes for an often visually delightful but also heavily symbolic ethnoscape, ideally suited to the exploration of red-hot political, civic, and socio-cultural issues. The signs of pastoral provide props and a set for the rustic, artful, and occasionally (naïvely) politicized figures that populate and give Roman meaning to an imaginary and leisurely rural world, superficially very different from daily life. This chapter explores how pastoral imagery can also help us to think about a different aspect of what made for enjoyable Roman space: the sight of a productive agricultural landscape.

The article examines the communication links without which society cannot exist, but they are constantly changing, depending on various factors, including the social structure of society, social space, level of socio-economic development, government and governance, democracy and current laws that constantly affect the modernization of society. The history of mankind is 35-40 thousand years old. In each historical period, society was at a certain stage of development, which created the appropriate socio-cultural level, which in one way or another influenced the communication in society, because without communication society can not exist. It should be noted that the socio-cultural level depends on the social structure of society, and is determined by the social space and level of cultural development in this historical time, as well as the political and economic development of the country and its environment by other countries. Society is a set of all means of interaction and forms of association of people, formed historically, having a common territory, common cultural values and social norms, characterized by socio-cultural the identity of its members. Social space was understood as a set of points on an imaginary continuum that has a given number of axes of measurement (coordinates) that describe the structure of society. Points in the social space are called statuses." There are constant information connections (communications) between the statuses. It is these communicative connections that create a certain system through which society develops. Well-known foreign scientists such as T. Hobbes, F. Ratzel, G. Simmel, E. Durkheim, R. Park, P. Sorokin, and others worked on the problem of "social space". This topic remains relevant today, because a certain historical period creates certain conditions for certain social phenomena. This topic remains relevant today, because a certain historical period creates certain conditions for certain social phenomena. Thus, the purpose of this article is to try to understand the communication changes that are taking place in society today and identify the factors that affect them. As you know, in society there are constant processes of socialization, people are constantly trying to learn about the environment: both natural and social. Especially a person tries to know and understand himself, because until you understand yourself, you will not be able to understand others. In Ukraine, it is planned to create a post-traditional socio-cultural space in which modernization takes place under the sign of traditional symbols. But in our society, "community-like" psychology is combined with urbanism and technical progress, traditional, post-traditional and modern coexist with some relative independence of culture. All this creates certain communicative features. Important features of the new socio-cultural reality are beginning to be outlined in Ukraine today.

The article examines a modern episode from the history of the revision of the image of the French bourgeoisie in English-language historiography. The author shows that at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, the American historian Sarah Maza raised the problem of the identity of this class in the period from 1750 to 1850 and put forward a hypothesis for reflection about its non-existence in the social imaginary. The study traces how the historian comes to the formulation of this question, reveals the essence of S. The project is based in an area which housed an ethnically and religiously heterogeneous composition of middle- and working-class groups until the 1960s, became dilapidated from the 1970s onwards and was stigmatized by the Turkish government at local, metropolitan and national levels. It was portrayed by the media as an area of social and cultural deprivation, allegedly home only to the most marginal members of society. This article will discuss the relevance of landscape as a useful category in historical research. Secondly, it will discuss how and why dominant representations of Beyoğlu’s urban landscape have developed and been instrumentalized in modern Istanbul from the 1980s onwards. Finally, this article shows how successive attempts of socio-cultural engineering by local governments, in order to reform or ‘modernize’ the urban landscape, had a strong impact on the physical and imaginary landscape of Beyoğlu and Tarlabaşi. It will be argued that local Istanbul and Beyoğlu governments, inspired by neoliberal ideas of urban planning and city marketing, have attempted to reshape the cultural identity of Beyoğlu and Tarlabaşi in order to legitimize drastic interventions in the area’s urban landscape and socio-cultural composition.

It is shown that the terms «creation» and «creativity», considered in English-language literature most often as synonyms, have acquired different meanings in Russian-language literature. We focus on their differences in goal setting. If the socio-cultural purpose of creativity, and the personal-psychological conditions of the creative process require an appeal to the supreme humanistic values, and goal-setting ensures a person’s creative productivity. And one of the most common approaches to the concept of creativity is the «productive» approach, which focuses mainly on the analysis of creative products, rather than procedural, and is associated with a goal-setting crisis. The authors focus on the moral basis of the creative process and the antisocial, aggressive nature of creativity: showing that mobbing and bullying are often the realization of creative thinking in the deviant behavior of «quasi-creators».

Abstract This section introduction explores the imaginative dimension of mobility in two West African countries, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Building on literature that highlights the existential dimension of movement and migration, the authors explore three socio-cultural patterns that inform representations of im/mobility: historical continuities and the longue-durée perspective on mobile practices, the association of geographical mobility with social betterment, and the interaction between local aspirations and the imaginary of global modernity. The three individual contributions by Bedert, Enria and Ménard bring out the work of imagination attached to im/mobility both in ‘home’ countries and diaspora communities, and underline the continuity of representations and practices between spaces that are part of specific transnational social fields.

During the First World War, the German Australian community, the largest non-Anglo-Celtic group, became the target of a relentless campaign of persecution, internment and deportation that resulted in its dismemberment and the destruction of its socio-cultural infrastructure. Under the country’s belligerent Prime Minister, W.M. Hughes, the machinery of government was used to suspend basic civil rights and the rule of law, while Australian civilians were called upon to participate in the “homefront war” against an imagined internal enemy. The government’s aim was to serve the cause of Im- perial Britain and its commercial supremacy, and to secure the future of White Australia as the home of an imaginary, exclusive “British race.”

Taking into account the prevailing socio-cultural circumstances throughout the 70s, with the investigation of the chronotopic/ topochronic assemblage, the conjunctures that mark the imprint of the “neo-”realist/- modernist imaginary will be highlighted as it is transposed into the texture of some Romanian categories that I opted and which I subjected to “(re)reading”. The methodology used begins from the lexical-semantic study of a corpus of approximately 5,000 forms, through the elaboration of a taxonomy (types of drinks, quantity, consumption, states and effects), and a lexicographic analysis, which suggest the presence of semantic changes, from rhetorical figures, mainly metaphor and metonymy, which causes the joy and delight on the part of its users.

This article traces the history of epilepsy’s affinities with new media. It draws on interviews with people with epilepsy (PWE) and wider instances of the condition’s representation in the socio-cultural imaginary to demonstrate the degree to which epilepsy has been heavily technologized in the second half of the 20th century. Thanks to common analogies made between the seizing brain and the faulty electrical circuit, the PWE has been increasingly conceived within cybernetic terms: in particular, these subjects have long been ‘black boxed’ by the medical establishment. Tracking this connection across the rise of so-called ‘Surveillance Medicine’ and new digital health technologies reveals, I argue, suggestive parallels between the stigmatized PWE and the data-driven subject of today’s digital environment.

Abstract The Galatian community is disrupted with different notions of the gospel than Paul intended. Paul, surprised that this community is confused so easily, sets out in Gal 3 to explain what justification by faith entails. Paul and his letter to the Galatians are products of a first century CE context. The problem when faced with Galatians, particularly Gal 3:1–14, is that research on rhetoric abounds, but the curse language, which is an embedded in Paul’s context is often dismissed or ignored. My focus here is to trace Paul’s meaning, specifically focusing on curse language in the argument of Gal 3 in order to show that Paul is embedded in a apotropaic imaginary as befits his socio-cultural setting and Greco-Roman discursive reality.

Abstract Across the globe, the genre of the fairy tale is inextricably linked with Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875). To this day, the Danish writer and his sombre, often dystopian tales are famed for their pronounced criticism of socio-cultural norms and are read and loved by all ages. In his work, Andersen made ample use of the fantastic, which ranges from the realm of the supernatural (esp. anthropomorphic plants, animals, and things) to the realm of the (realistically) imaginary such as the faculty of imagination or (religious) beliefs. In doing so, socio-cultural phenomena such as conceptions of and reactions to (older) age are approached from a broad spectrum of angles. While research has already shown a keen interest in matters of gender, (homo)sexuality, and class in Andersen’s tales, his approach to (older) age and ageism has rather been ignored so far. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to break ground in the form of an in-depth analysis of correlations between age(ism) and the fantastic in Andersen’s literary tales “Grandmother” (1845) and “The Old House” (1847), with a particular interest in the question of how far age(ism) is constructed by both the narrator and the reader.

In most movies, the "imaginary audience" is already hidden in the structure at the beginning of the creation, and the acceptance of the audience means the finalization of the movie art. The overall purpose of this paper is to explore the audience's acceptance of the cross-cultural movie Everything Everywhere All at Once based on cultural adaptation theory and communication adaptation theory. We have to cautiously reflect on whether the ecology of the movie market is undergoing restructuring nowadays, and whether the audience's receptive psychology is changing. Is there a change in the audience's receptive psychology? How can social, psychological, and cultural issues be properly internalized into the core expression of a film? This study collects more than 200,000 words of textual materials from mainstream media channels such as Douban.com, B-station, and Time.com for qualitative research, and utilizes the rooted theory approach to explore the psychological behavioral mechanism of audience's acceptance of cross-cultural films represented by Everything Everywhere All at Once and to construct a theoretical model of the psychology of acceptance in a cross-cultural context. It is found that cultural adaptation and communication adaptation theories have once again emphasized their complex structure and new discourse field in the new cross-cultural movie reception situation. This study expands the applicability of these two theories in the new socio-cultural context of China.

Abstract This article offers a meditation on the idea of home as expressed by four US poets belonging to different historical periods and socio-cultural backgrounds. At first, the poetic compositions I will discuss may startle readers in ways similar to what happened to Ludwig van Beethoven’s contemporaries as they first listened to his experimental and defamiliarizing late quartets. Emily Dickinson, Jennifer Elise Foerster, Richard Wright, and Agha Shahid Ali populate their homes with volcanoes, lice, faces hidden in gingerbread tins, and half-inch Himalayas. Moving alternately between macroscopic and microscopic dimensions, this article asks provocatively: How is the relation between movement and homemaking staged in these poems? To what extent do these poetic compositions bear the marks of homelessness and of imaginary homes? And finally, what should we make out of this unharmonious wholeness?

The widely renowned and exhaustively researched Kashmiri-American diasporic poet, Agha Shahid Ali, has received acclaim for his portrayal of themes such as loss, longing for the homeland, nostalgia, hyphenated identity, hybridity, and dislocation, among others. However, within the purview of new historicism, this paper intends to examine the interplay of literature, culture, and history. Using Clifford Geertz's framework of "thick description," the paper analyzes Agha's poetry as a cultural artifact with ethnographic value. Through a semiotic analysis of select poems based on Bakhtin's notion of chronotopes, the paper aims to unravel themes of fragmented identity, cultural memorialization, and the preservation of imaginary homelands. The paper also attempts to explore that Agha Shahid Ali, actively engaged with the socio-political turmoil in his homeland. He sought to reconcile the tensions between different traditions and religious communities, envisioning a personal utopia rooted in his privileged position. His poetry reflects his historical context, facilitating a symbolic exchange between the fragments of Kashmiri culture. Through intertextual references, religious symbols, and social emblems, Ali constructs a significant and experimental narrative about Kashmir.

The revolution of 2020 in Belarus has often been described as a new 1989 and there is no doubt that the emancipatory appeal of the Belarusian protests is similar to the one that sustained the 1989 revolutions. But will building the democratic system—the major aspiration of the Belarusian protesters—follow the scripts of liberalization and westernization in evidence in other eastern and central European countries? Will self-determination in post-Lukashenka Belarus follow a scenario modelled on the patterns adopted by other east European and post-Soviet states, where ethnocentric national identities and the memory of victims of communism became distinctive markers of east European post-communism? Examining the symbolic dimension of the protest repertoire, this article demonstrates how the protests re-arranged the system of historical and cultural references that shaped the foundation of Belarusian collective memory and identity discourses since 1994. It reveals how a broad variety of actors engaged in contention activated a process of re-signification of cultural and political symbols and ideas and led to the formation of a blended socio-cultural imaginary, which integrates previously disconnected and competing projects and ideologies.

I pursue here a wish of Ricœur: to analyze ideology and utopia from a genetic phenomenology, in the sense of Husserl in the Cartesian Meditations, which “strives to dig under the surface of apparent meaning to the most fundamental meanings.” A single innovative interest guides my proposal between two contrasting phenomenologies of the imagination in Michel Henry and Paul Ricœur: to root, on the one hand, the dialectical mediation of ideology and utopia in the living immanence of the affective imagination and, on the other hand, to inscribe the power of its expression as well as its power to act in the social and cultural field require to hold together the affective immanence of life, the figuration of the social reality and the socio-cultural and historical praxis. The psychoanalytical interpretation of the cultural imaginary to the bending of the affect and the language and the micro-history of the social practices of the representations serve here as “forks caudines,” under which the immanent phenomenology of the affective imagination is led to a hermeneutics of the imaginative practices of the discourse and the action.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the socio-cultural adaptation of foreign higher education applicants. The relevance of the study has to do with the significant flow of educational migrants to Ukraine. Most of them experienced “culture shock” due to the discrepancy between imaginary and real life in a foreign-speaking country with a history, culture, lifestyle, and traditions different from their own. Their socialization and language training are integral components of adaptation in a foreign-language educational and socio-cultural environment, of the process of personal growth. The author describes the peculiarities of communicative and sociocultural competences formation in the process of learning Ukrainian as a foreign language and considers the advisability of using sources that reveal the evolution of the country’s history and culture in the regional dimension. Knowledge of the region or city where foreigners study helps them navigate unfamiliar places better. The paper offers a view on the role and place of linguistic and country studies competence in the process of socio-cultural adaptation. The study of local history materials by foreign students should be accompanied by visual displays of examples of material and spiritual culture. It is advisable to conduct thematic excursions (real and virtual), round tables, contests, business games, and conferences. Foreign students should be involved in various communicative situations, which would allow them to remember the vocabulary and grammar of the Ukrainian language faster and better. It has been proved that studying the history and culture of another nation using language training of foreign citizens contributes to the formation of not only communicative competence but also a versatile personality. Understanding the differences in the historical processes, cultural and socio-economic development of individual countries and peoples contributes to the formation of the foundations of humanism and tolerance. The process of adaptation to a new foreign language environment promotes awareness of one’s own identity. Prospects for further research are seen in the improvement of forms and methods of classroom and extracurricular work, the use of new country studies materials to develop and increase the level of mastery of foreign students in all types of speech activities, to promote soft adaptation to new living conditions, and personal growth.

This essay interrogates how the theatre of Queer monologist Neil Watkins challenges HIV-stigma, while simultaneously reconciling his Queerness and HIV-positivity with a sense of Irishness. The development of life-saving drugs for the treatment of HIV means that, in certain parts of the world, including Ireland, people are no longer dying from AIDS, but living with HIV. This has given rise to what cultural commentators call a ‘Post-AIDS’ discourse, whereby a discourse of crisis and death has evolved into one of health and typical life expectancy. In terms of being ‘post-AIDS’, Ireland bifurcates into two paradoxical socio-cultural discourses: that of HIV as a medical event, and that of AIDS as a cultural narrative. And while the discourse surrounding HIV the medical event is progressive and democratic, the cultural narrative of AIDS in Ireland is steeped in stigma, ignorance, and contagion paranoia. This damaging narrative is mirrored and embodied in Irish theatre. Interrogating Irish theatre's contentious relationship with the HIV-positive body reveals persistent themes of absence, hiddenness, illness, and death. Neil Watkins disrupts this dramaturgy of shame by mobilizing HIV-stigma to political effect, disrupting received knowledge and cultural assumptions about the HIV-positive body and its current theatrical placement within an anachronistic discourse of crisis. In earlier monologues such as A Cure for Homosexuality (2005) Watkins blurs the lines between the fictional HIV-positive character and the living performer, engendering a troubling tension for the spectator. With his latest work, The Year of Magical Wanking (2010) Watkins further evolves this space whereby the boundaries between character and performer are completely negated. By journeying through Watkins's ‘magical’ year of quotidian HIV-stigma and sexual shame, the spectator discovers the roots of such shame and stigma are not only embedded in Irish socio-political structures, but also in a limiting and narrow heteronormative sexual imaginary.

Abstract In contemporary debates about socio-technical implications of software, the platform metaphor, the corresponding notions of architectures and ecosystems as well as the formatting of data to afford ‘platformization’ play a central role. This approach has certainly proven fruitful to assess the role of companies like Facebook in contemporary society. However, it characteristically overlooks the messiness of actual usage practices and those studies that do acknowledge the internal power struggles that subcutaneously shape platforms often take a top-down perspective, disregarding bottom-up processes of (re-) appropriation. To address this gap, the article outlines a method to study how users and semi-professional developers collectively frame the cultural imaginary of a platform by conducting a thoroughly comparative content analysis of mashups created using the Facebook Web API. The affordances of many individual mashups might be considered marginal; yet, the tool-assistant comparison allows for inferring common patterns of interpretation that characterize mashup creation as a mobile digital practice, which plays a key role in social media platform development.

The results indicated that the most frequently used compliment strategies by Persian native speakers were explicit unbound semantic formula and non-compliment strategies. However, the participants used 'other' strategies, future reference, contrast, and request strategies the least. The results also suggested the effect of age on the distribution of compliments. While the younger participants preferred non-compliment strategies the most, the older participants preferred explicit unbound semantic formula strategies the most. However, despite minor differences, all age-groups rarely tended to use future reference, contrast, request, and 'other' strategies. The results cashed light on the cultural and socio-cultural factors affecting the way people offer compliments. Keywords: Pragmatic competence, Speech acts, Compliments, Discourse Completion Task (DCT), Social variables

ABSTRACT Based on the statements that (1) the word in interaction manifests itself as an ideological sign, oriented to a precise social audience, circumscribed in a given historical time; (2) that race is a language and (3) that geographic displacement involves a clash between different systems of meaning, I interpret data from the cultural translation process for the term black [negro, in Portuguese], based on the enunciations of two Portuguese language learners in a course for immigrant mothers held in Southern Brazil. The data presented were generated as part of an ongoing ethnographic investigation.1 The discussion points to controlling images that persist in the social imaginary from effacement procedures, discursive whitening and hypersexualization of the term negro [black]. Data also reveals that the processes of attributing meanings around race are in full dispute in the current socio-historical context.

In this article, we investigate how the linguistic landscape serves as an important strategy among a diaspora community not only to maintain a transnational identity but also to construct a unique identity in the recipient society. We examine the linguistic landscape in the Ethiopian diaspora of Washington DC, referred to as “Little Ethiopia”, which provides an interesting site to investigate the role of the linguistic landscape in constructing an imaginary community built on the myth of the old homeland, including a unique African identity in a new homeland with other Africans as well as African Americans. Serving as a rich source of data for investigating language, culture and identity, the linguistic landscape in “Little Ethiopia” encompasses many semiotic resources. This Ethiopian transnational community engages in (re)constructing socio-cultural and political ideologies through the linguistic landscape.

This paper examines the humanitarian reality genre in Norway as a form of entertainment, education, and information. Norwegian 'doing-good' entertainment content is explored as representative of particular cultural and historical context, especially due to the popularity, frequency of broadcasting and the specific societal status assigned to this format. An overview and the consideration of the fundamental themes and elements of the genre elaborates on the concepts of 'Scanguilt' and 'regime of goodness', relevant for the interpretation of these programs. Differences in comparison to non-fiction journalistic storytelling are also pertinent. Drawing from Tvedt's thesis on the strategic communication regime, the methods, actors and effects of this genre of entertainment, education and information are seen in a wider spectrum, not limited to the socio-political outcomes apparent only in the Norwegian context. This point of departure enables the move from the consequences to the Norwegian identity and society in the direction of the effects of the media reproduction of coloniality.

This article discusses the ideological meaning of literacy and how it should be considered before we attempt to develop various writing programs. Writing as one of main forms of human communication is prone to being ill-defined. This may lead to certain injustices in our education world, especially when literacy is not defined or seen as an ideological concept. The most familiar example of this in a learning context is that we tend to view literacy as reading and writing ignoring other values and potentials that a learner brings to a classroom such as her socio-cultural background. In the face of such challenges, this article therefore presents a conceptual framework which could serve as a reminder for educators before they attempt to develop their various education programs. The author hopes that the article would help educators determine where they should stand along this imaginary continuum of ideological literacy.<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 115%;"><em><span style="font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Book Antiqua','serif'; letter-spacing: -.3pt; mso-ansi-language: IN;" lang="IN">This article discusses the ideological meaning of literacy and how it should be considered before we attempt to develop various writing programs. The archetype of the orphan has a long history in the western cultural imaginary. In need of culturally and politically legitimized familial structures to ensure the child’s moral and physical needs are met, substitute parental figures loom large in narratives of orphanhood where the (anti-)hero comes good. This article will consider the presentation of female orphans in two films: Carla Simón’s Catalan film Estiu 1993/Summer 1993 (Simón, 2017) presents the story of Frida, who has just lost her parents to AIDS and is relocated to her aunt and uncle’s rural family home, while Saura’s celebrated Cría cuervos/Raise Ravens (Saura, 1976) focuses on Ana, one of three sisters recently orphaned and now under the care of their aunt in late-Francoist Madrid. The article will examine the similarities between the two films’ thematic and formal approaches to the subject matter, attending to their respective socio-historical contexts.

The essay addresses the experience of movement as a pro-cess of modeling reality and, more specifically, as a seman-tic and socio-semiotic device of influence of the political antagonism between freedom and security in the criminal field. Starting from a specific feeling of justice that seeps from the ‘symbolic’ criminal law, it aims to comment that par-ticular genealogy of cultural and social discursiveness from which the imaginary of presumed criminal risk and the con-sequent need to foresee exemplary punishments takes off, in the movement of history. Ultimately, the essay argues how the danger of the decline of criminal law always lurks in the movement of society, i.e. the real possibility that movement is read without iuris prudentia and therefore only as a justifica-tion to promote torrential penal legislation and a criminal law far from being a regulatory tool of extrema ratio.

We use a socio-historical lens to look at how Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs) have gained legitimacy as a market form. In this article, we question the countercultural conception of CSAs, especially given their rapid growth over the past 25 years. We contend that placing CSA within a larger frame of reference that incorporates American pastoral values and connects CSA to the history of American pastoralism helps account for how CSA has gained legitimacy with mainstream users. We show that American pastoralism provides a link between 19th century agrarian ideals, 1950s suburbia, 1970s counter-cultural communards, and today’s CSAs. In showing the ubiquity and chameleon like character of American pastoralist ideology, we suggest that it is an important example of a cultural imaginary, which is inducing change in food markets in the United States and at the same time masking certain cultural contradictions. We propose that the development of the Internet as a channel of communication has aided in building legitimacy for this market form by promoting both more personal commercial communications and the possibility of de-massification of communications. Thus, CSAs’ web presence reinforces egalitarian principles and the perception of shared community that are central ingredients of pastoralist ideology.

This study contributes to the history of poster connected with interdisciplinary conceptualization, where poster is examined as a design object and core advertising medium in the context of cross-cultural interaction, cultural integration and national identification. Artistic and stylistic features of famous poster schools (Swiss, German, Austrian, Polish, Japanese, French, Italian, Baltic, Ukrainian, etc.) are analyzed and theoretically summarized on the example of cultural-imagery and tourist posters from different countries. Communicative and aesthetic aspects of image creation are presented in socio-cultural dynamics according to certain stages of social development. Colour is highlighted as the most important and attractive means among compositional factors. Scientific novelty of this study is to justify the world’s cultural heritage of poster. It is proved that poster actively shapes public consciousness and has a powerful influence on public opinion. Also, poster is included in social sign system and represents past or present creative experience. Semantic role of poster is a visualization of relevant idea, general rendering of advertised object in visual form and content, perfect reflection of real or imaginary objects and phenomena in mind. The results of study indicate that present-day poster, as a product of culture should have accentuated aesthetics, non-standard vision, and variability of graphic communication and be interesting for the target audience. As advertising often borrows images from different arts, their creative interpretation and preservation of symbolic meanings are of great importance. Particular attention is focused on the relationship between art imagery and functionality in the process of poster designing.
