Street teams are grassroots efforts built from the ground up by people who have a vested interest in promoting a band or event. They are also made up of people who are passionate about what they do. This study investigated the socialization process of street team members from the investigation stage to obtaining full membership. It also identified the outcomes of socialization. In this study, 15 street team members were interviewed and observations were made at concerts and street team events over an 11-month period. Results indicated that although there are similarities in the socialization process among street team members, they actually belong to three different types of street teams.

The aim of the study was to identify perceptions of problems in the effective integration of entrants into the South African legal profession. Two types of problems were investigated. Firstly, typical entrant problems; that is, problems which typically are experienced by newcomers into organisations. Secondly, problems which are specifically related to the race and/or gender of organisational entrants.

The role of social influences concerning gambling behavior was empirically examined. Children (N = 130) in grades 4 and 6 completed several questionnaires concerning their gambling behavior, risk taking, and locus of control and played a computer-simulated roulette game individually and in groups (same and mixed gender dyads or triads). Results reveal that during individual and group play, males consistently exhibit riskier behavior (higher average wagers) than females and mixed gender groups. However, average wagers of females and mixed gender groupings appear to be most affected by the group condition. All changes resulting from the group condition were generally maintained over a relatively short period of time in the post-test condition. No major developmental changes were noted nor was locus of control found to be a significant mediating factor. The results are interpreted with respect to the importance of the influence of the peer group on children's gambling behavior. Future directions for research are suggested.

This doctoral thesis entitled Senior citizens, communication technology and socialization originates from the interest of the nowadays changes occurring by the process of human aging. In Brazil it started about 50 years ago, but in contrast with developed countries, these changes occurred in such a high speed that it was difficult to implement public policies, as well as their recognition and the social adjustment of the entire population. The growing of seniors segment and the decrease in birthrate changed the population structure and naturally modified their social interactions. Concurrently to this, the evolution of digital technology has impacted the daily lives of people with continuous innovations and changes in communication interfaces. If communication in postmodern times occurs largely through technological objects (mobile phones, smartphones, desktops, notebooks, tablets, etc.) and digital media (software, applications, websites, social networks, etc.), all population ages must interact with these technologies in order to participate in social and information exchanges within their social environment. Human aging has some characteristics that lead to natural losses such as physical, cognitive and social ones. The elderly social network decrease, the difficulties of its renewal and the adaptation to social environment changes are some of consequences of losses. Thus it was believed that there was a difficulty in the elderly follow the technological evolution of communication objects in order to interfere with maintaining and increasing their social relationships. This research aimed to survey the use of technological communication objects by the segment of the elderly and answer whether this use has something to do with their socialization. For this, a literature review on the Brazilian population aging, the relationship of the elderly with technological objects, and the concepts related to the postmodern socialization were raised and analyzed; also semi-structured interviews with the elderly was conducted, in order to obtain a qualitative understanding of the target audience about the use of communication technologies, and a questionnaire online was applied to quantify this use. These techniques were used to identify the frequency of use of technological objects and communication media, to verify the activities undertaken and the social groups associated to them and to compare the behavior of the three groups of elderly (60-69, 70-79 and above 80) with the younger group. The results showed a direct relationship between the use of technology and the way of socialization held today and it was noticed behavioral differences between the age groups of older people and a close proximity of group of 60-69 years with the younger group. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the behavioral profile of the Brazilian elderly that, unlike the common sense, does not only characterize the picture of losses and hopelessness that is often portrayed. Today the elderly are healthier, more engaged, more productive and seek to be inserted not only among the older people, but in all social groups.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is an ambitious and challenging academic high school program. However, the IB program is not without its difficulties and shortcomings. Many IB students appear to sense various levels of social dissonance from the general student population. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate why nonacademic socialization is a significant problem between high school IB students and AP/traditional students. IB student/graduates and former/retired IB faculty members were used exclusively for this qualitative study. The focus of this qualitative study required analyzing the IB student nonacademic socialization lived experience. This qualitative study used a grounded theoretical methodology that included open-ended interviews. All interviews conducted were face-to-face, phone, or with the use of Skype technology. The coding analysis resulted in the emergence of four themes and sixteen subthemes. The four emergent themes generated a theoretical model that supported the central research question and two secondary research questions.

This is a single case study of the socialization of a woman in the public school superintendency at the end of the 20th century. It is a description of the forces that come to bear on her behavior as the chief executive of a school system. Socialization is a continuous process of adaptation to and personalization of one's environment. Further, it is believed to be a process that occurs throughout one's professional career and life and not a fixed, end state; therefore, one's career is embedded within one's socialization for life. A model is proposed which represents female socialization as dynamic role creation through the responses of accommodation and role personalization as they are affected by the interaction of organizational, community, and personal forces. These forces are communicated through the transmittal processes of formal policies, networking, and mentoring. The unique experiences of this superintendent are explored to see if these forces of influence appear in this situation. Data collected through interviews and document reviews were coded and then analyzed with a matrix. Seven categories of subjects were interviewed, so this study not only provides the perspectives of the superintendent but also those of her spouse, secretary, current and former colleagues in the central office, a building-level administrator, current and former members of the school board, and community residents. Documents from the news media, records of school board meetings, and division publications provided information about the total experiences of this superintendent.

Language maintenance and re-creation are burning issues for many indigenous communities around the world. Child language acquisition and socialization are processes integral to understanding these issues. In order to design realistic language recreation projects, research must first address the many factors impacting the acquisition and maintenance of a language by children. This dissertation shows how different contexts, historical, environmental, interactional, relate to Kaska language socialization and acquisition. Kaska is a Northern Athabaskan language spoken in the Yukon Territory (Canada). In particular, it shows how the shift from Kaska being a language of everyday communication to one associated with authority and respect constrains children's Kaska production. To examine this shift, a combination of linguistic and ethnographic methods are used. Linguistic description identifies the grammatical structures of the target language. These are the structures that children need to acquire in order to be able to understand and speak the Kaska language. Additionally, grammatical description of adult utterances reveals that children are being exposed to a full Kaska grammar. This suggests that children may understand more Kaska than they produce. Ethnographic methods identify the social constraints on speaking the Kaska language and help establish links between interaction patterns and ideological constructs. They reveal that language choice is related to a speaker's age and social position. Older interlocutors may choose to speak Kaska while younger interlocutors typically choose English. Children have incorporated this pattern into their playgroups. By producing a Kaska utterance, a child may become leader of the playgroup. He or she uses Kaska to attain this social position. Speaking Kaska is also related to the concept of respect. Narratives on socialization emphasize this by instructing children on how to behave respectfully. While children are exposed to an adult Kaska grammar, they predominantly speak English. This pattern is not just the result of past assimilationist practices; it is part of Kaska language socialization.

The organizational socialization field has received considerable attention in both academic and popular writing. Accounts take either an organizational view - focusing on the socialization tactics organizations use to bring about desired change in the individuals they recruit - or a newcomer view - focusing on how individuals integrate successfully. The literature suggests that the mechanisms whereby both processes are achieved is carried out through social interaction. However, the nature of this relationship-building process lacks a clear conceptual and empirical underpinning. The principal objective of this thesis is to develop a framework explaining/suggesting how newcomers build relationships with others and how their personal networks change in early organizational socialization. Drawing on the socialization and social network literatures, the framework proposes a four stage framework - Newcomers' uncertainty in a new organization, Relationship initiation process, Relationship straightening and persistence over time and Newcomers' network change. Longitudinal empirical evidence, of forty newcomers' personal networks, suggests that self-monitoring, extraversion and protean career behaviour influence newcomers' selectivity in adding support providers in their personal network, however uncertainty is important only for predicting relationship building to get social support. Overall, newcomers need more informational than social support in the early organizational entry. Organizational socialization tactics explained the extent of social support received, but not the extent of informational support. Finally, the willingness of support provider to give help and similarity of support provider based on age determined which support provider was contacted. The thesis contributes to the organizational socialization literature by showing the selectivity of newcomers in building relationship in the early organizational entry. It shows the importance of socialization tactics and the perception of uncertainty newcomers perceive for the extent of support received. It also acknowledge the dyadic role of other socialization agents in the relationship building process. Lastly, the thesis also contributes to the social network literature by looking at the effect of individual differences and contextual variables in the personal network dynamics.

Scientific Problem Health care is the underlying value for a society aspiring after quality of life. This is a field where the quality of services is assessed by experts, not by service receivers. For this reason, results can be visible after quite a long time when it is too late to correct them. The inherent human right to have better health, a healthy environment and acceptable, accessible and appropriate health care is defined in the Health System Legislation of the Lithuanian Republic (1994). The main goal of the entire health care system is to assure this inherent human right. Health policy began to take shape in 1990, at the restoration of independence in Lithuania. Financing according to the rigid articles of financial estimates, extensive increase in the number of stationary services and health care specialists, passive policy, oriented only to the treatment of diseases, and a biomedical attitude towards health were all gradually replaced. Attention has been focussed on the creation of active policy. One of the main orientations of health system development has been the reorganization of training for health care specialists – nurses – in accordance with EU standards, especially to ensure that practising nurses have the opportunity for professional expression. The reform of the health care system has also created more tasks – planning of nursing staff demand, licensing of specialists, their motivation, etc. The reform of nursing science, training of general care... Mokslinė problema LR Sveikatos sistemos įstatyme (1994) apibrėžta prigimtinė žmogaus teisė turėti kuo geresnę sveikatą, sveiką aplinką, priimtiną, prieinamą ir tinkamą sveikatos priežiūrą. Visos sveikatos priežiūros sistemos pagrindinis tikslas – užtikrinti šią žmogaus prigimtinę teisę. 1990 m. Framed in the critical race theory of structuration (CRTS), this sequential explanatory mixed methods study seeks to identify the socialization practices by examining the realities of practices of assistant principals and the ways in which they impact the disciplinary actions of assistant principals at middle and high schools. The mixed methods design was used to explore and understand: (1) the realities of practice within the school organization; (2) the socialization processes of assistant principals within the realities of practice; and (3) the ways in which those socialization processes influence their disciplinary practices.

Fifty-one percent of the assistant principals invited to participate in this study completed the online survey. The survey responses led to a focused sample and in-depth interviews with three Black female assistant principals supervised by White male principals. The data from both portions of this study revealed that the structure of the realities of practice and the dimensions of the CRTS coexist and correlate within the school organization. This combination creates a Socialization Paradox Cloud that dictates assistant principals' unwillingness and/or inability to change policy adversely affecting students.

This study looked at the correlations between mother’s feminism values, their attitudes toward their child’s engagement in gender atypical play, and self-reported parenting behaviors. Sixty-six mothers of six to nine-year-old children participated in the study, with 63 completing an online questionnaire and three completing the questionnaire as well as an in-person interview with their child. Three questions guided the research: 1) Are mother’s feminism values related to their attitudes toward children’s gender expression and parenting behaviors related to gender? 2) Does child’s gender impact mother’s acceptance of gender atypical play and parenting behaviors surrounding children’s individual gender expression? 3) Are mothers’ values regarding acceptance of gender atypical behavior reflected in their self-reported parenting behaviors? Overall, it was expected that more traditional mothers and mothers of sons would report less acceptance of gender atypical play. The results revealed that mothers’ feminism values were correlated to their acceptance of gender atypical behaviors, supporting the hypothesis that more traditional mothers are less accepting of gender atypical behavior. Mothers’ self-reported parenting behaviors revealed stronger trends toward supporting gender typical play in sons than in daughters, supporting the hypothesis that mothers may be less accepting of gender atypical play in sons than daughters.

This qualitative research study offers a new model through which to examine Black motherhood as resistance to institutionalized racism, being driven in part by the current mortality rate of Black children in the United States of America. Six mothers who self-identify as Black and activists were interviewed about how they resist racism through how they raise their children. Two major findings emerged and are discussed at depth within this study: Critical Race Socialization and Countering Mis-education. The Critical Race Socialization process is a new way to examine a critical, intentional process of racial socialization towards liberation taken on by Black mothers. The Critical Race Socialization process combines key components of Critical Race Theory, Pedagogies of the Home, Oppressed Family Pedagogy and Harro’s cycles of socialization and liberation. Recommendations provided in the conclusion of this study encourage new Black mothers to center race and other sites of oppression in their pedagogy, utilizing age appropriate material for children when speaking about the truths of the world and Blackness. The study also calls for a village of support to be built around Black children, and for educators working with Black children to develop a critical repertoire of the lived experiences of Black people and trauma.

The purpose of this research was twofold; a quantitative examination of male socialization patterns along with an assessment of change over time in male socialization experiences. Men born in the 1950s and men born in the 1970s were compared to obtain an understanding of male socialization processes and possible changes since feminist issues have become a prevalent source of discourse in society. A survey questionnaire was utilized with a modified snowball sampling technique to explore male socialization experience. One hundred and one men participated in the project. Socialization experience for the men in this sample was five dimensional and while certain dimensions revealed change over time, others remained static. Findings indicate that quantitative measures can be successfully employed to study socialization processes.

A commonly held belief in higher education is that a student’s educational program paves the way towards a specific career choice, forcing students to intentionally choose courses in preparation for a particular line of work (Lair & Wieland, 2012). Recognizing the influential role of education (Jablin, 2001) and the increasing numbers of nonprofit education programs (Mirabella & McDonald, 2012), it is important to understand the educational expectations created by university programs and how these expectations are enacted as students become nonprofit employees. To better understand communication practices that shape the expectations, experiences, and worker identities, this study applies organizational assimilation theory to nonprofit education and work through interviews of nonprofit employees’ experiences after completing a nonprofit education program. Qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts indicates that nonprofit-focused educational programs socialize students to work for a cause that they find personally meaningful. However, not all students are able to meet this expectation, creating two paths, a straight path and a winding path in search of meaningful work. Those on the straight path who found personally meaningful work attributed their experience to an internal locus of control based on an intentional job search and workplace opportunities. Participants who did not find the personally meaningful work they expected used external control attributions by blaming the job market, the way their generation approaches work, and how their educational program created unrealistic expectations. Findings deepen understandings of organizational assimilation theory in terms of education, while bridging educational practices and organizational assimilation theory to contribute practical implications. Practical implications include encouraging education programs to facilitate volunteering and networking opportunities for their students, prospective nonprofit workers to seek out volunteer and job shadowing opportunities, and nonprofit organizations to focus on the assimilation process of new employees.

The purpose of this project is to explore the historical image of Hell in Medieval Europe as an agent of socialization for illiterate Christian communities. The project focuses on a literary work, Tundale’s Vision, written in 1149 C.E in Cashel, Ireland. Tundale’s Vision came from a genre of vision literature derived from popular oracular folk tradition surrounding the image of Hell that served the purpose of socializing Christian communities to certain social norms and stigmas presented by the author. Vision literature would be used by preachers in vernacular sermons throughout the Medieval period in order to reinforce moral and social messages presented in to their congregations, and it drew much of its themes and imagery from folk traditions in order to be more relatable to local communities. This research provides a historical context from which this genre of literature emerged including a discourse on how it gained power as an agent of socialization in Medieval Europe. Time is devoted to the historical state of what are generally considered primary agents of socialization in human societies throughout Medieval Europe, and research reveals that much of these agents, aside from religion, were inaccessible to the majority of Medieval Europeans, especially those of the lower class. Additionally, this project provides information on the rise in popularity of the artistic image of Hell in the Medieval period. The analysis of Tundale’s Vision, a work that emerged from this environment saturated with artistic depictions of Hell, reconstructs potential social norms and stigmas of 12th century Ireland relating to a contemporary reform movement within the Irish Christian church. This analysis provides the historical origin of many images commonly associated with the popular Medieval conception of Hell as it appears in Tundale’s Vision, and it analyzes the use of the fear of a painful afterlife in order spread and reinforce ideals presented by the Christian Church. Much of this project draws from the scholarly works of Gwenfair Adams and John Seymour who produced research concerning Tundale’s Vision, other works of vision literature, and their impact on Medieval Christian communities. The power of religious artwork in the process of socialization in Medieval Ireland should become apparent throughout this work.

The purpose of this study was to examine the behavioral aspects and socialization of the cultural value of respeto in a community sample of Mexican immigrant mothers and fathers and their Mexican and Mexican American children. Cultural values are socialized in children from a very young age through parenting practices so that children learn and engage in behaviors that are culturally relevant within their culture. Respeto is a cultural value that the literature suggests is one of the most important values in Latina/o communities, especially of Mexican origin individuals. Recommendations have been set forth from many fields including education, mental health, and health to take into account this cultural value in order to optimally engage Latinas/os in treatments. Cultural values have been successfully incorporated in evidenced-based treatments, such as cultural adaptations, but further examination and understanding of cultural values at a deeper level is needed in order to engage in culturally competent treatments and interventions. To understand and examine respeto, two scales were developed from the literature, community experts, and psychologist experts to capture children’s behavioral aspects of respeto and how parents socialize this value in them. Behavioral observations were coded to capture children’s display of respeto behaviors when they were interacting with their mothers and fathers. In addition, the socialization of respeto behaviors were coded for both mothers and fathers. Children displayed more respeto behaviors to their fathers than to their mothers. There were no gender differences in displays of respeto behaviors or socialization of respeto by mothers or fathers. Respeto and socialization were not related to child outcomes. The only significant finding from the primary analyses was a significant correlation between parent sex and child display of respeto, with fathers experiencing more respeto than mothers, t(52) = 2.714, p = .009, d = 0.753. One of the limitations was that this was a prevention sample and future research should examine children with a broader range of behavioral problems.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute with knowledge regarding the connection between the socialization process and the organizational commitment perceived by junior accountants. Based on Van Maanen and Schein's (1979) model, we intend to identify and describe how selected socialization strategies affect junior accountants’ perceived affective, continuous and normative commitment during the initial five years in the firm. Research methodology: Semi-structured interview was chosen as the key approach for gathering essential data. Interviews were conducted at three major accounting firms with a total of eight interview participants. The study has a qualitative approach because of the ability to go in depth on the studied phenomenon. Conclusion: The socialization process consists of individual, informal, sequential, fixed, serial, and investiture strategies. A predetermined training program runs along the process however, which entails elements of a collective and formal approach. This study shows that several strategic choices in the socialization influence the affective and normative organizational commitment of junior accountants. The junior accountants find they can act according to their own values and affect their horizontal position in the organization. The study also indicates that the training program stimulates creation of contacts throughout the organization and gives assistants a feeling of obligation to "repay" the organization for the investment made in them.

This research focuses on the methods of introduction into BDSM, role identification, and the management of private information as it relates to BDSM. The method utilized for this study was in-depth interviews of fifteen current participants in the BDSM subculture. It is primarily through peer association, sexual scripting, and impression management that new members are introduced, learn their role, and manage their information within the BDSM subculture. It was found that peer association is the primary method of socializing members. Role identification is accomplished through both a method of sexual scripting as well as complimentary differentiation, the process by which a stimulus is transmitted and received, and subsequent stimuli are transmitted back, reinterpreted and responded to. It is through impression management and stigma management that members learn to maintain the privacy of their participation. Future research should include additional analysis with a larger sample size to determine if the current findings will continue to hold true.

As new employees come into their new workplaces, they engage in behaviors that make it easy for them to fit in with the already-established environment. Spanning across various industries, both Federal and private sector, 10 participants indicated that they believed their childhood experiences were the source of their socialization process development. Despite previous research, this research concluded that organizational socialization tactics had no real bearing on whether or not a newcomer perceived themselves to be successful in their socialization process. Results indicated that the two most important factors of a successful socialization was that the newcomers understood their jobs, were able to reduce their level of uncertainty through asking questions and seeking feedback, and establishing relationships with their co-workers.

Twenty-first century social-ecologic systems are in the midst of a complex adaptive cycle. There is growing evidence to suggest the existence of a psycho-social developmental process whereby a person becomes situated in an environmental worldview. This process of environmental socialization has received attention in peer-reviewed journals. A case study was developed to see if qualitative methods could yield deeper insight. Depth interviewing and grounded theory analysis were used to explore student?s thoughts on formative influences deemed significant in the development of their own environmental perspective. The qualitative method used in the study was useful in probing the nuance, complexity, and significance of the student?s environmental socialization. Natural resource managers, educators, philanthropists, moral leaders, and concerned citizens can benefit when social constructs of environmental sustainability are better understood.

Parental socialization values are compared over sixty years by using data from the Denton Parent Project collected in 1989 and from similar questions asked of parents in Middletowri in 1924 and 1978, The objectives of the study were as follows: how have parental socialization values changed through time since the 1920s; has the impact of parental social class status on parental socialization values decreased over time; compare Alwin's study on obedience and autonomy to see how trend has changed from 1978 Middletown to 1989 Denton; and, finally, look at certain family structure variables to determine their influence. Today's parents emphasize social acceptance and a sense of social responsibility in child training practice. Social class still has an impact on parental socialization values but not as great as expected.

The character of the professional socialization experience is a subject of debate in the literature; one of the primary issues being the relative contributions of trainees to the nature of their socializing experience. As crucial as the clinical education experience is to the educational and professional development of medical students, it has received relatively little attention in the literature on professional socialization of physicians. The goals of this research were to understand, from the students' perspective, the character of the first clinical learning experience in the medical school career of a group of medical students and, given the character of that context, the role of student negotiations in their own education and professional socialization. This study employed a symbolic interactionist framework and the data collection methods of participant observation and unstructured interview. The data collection was conducted over a six-week period during which time the researcher experienced along with a group of six medical students their first clinical learning experience. These students perceived the clinical learning environment to be challenging, complex and frequently too busy to easily accommodate their learning needs. They recognized the enormity of their learning task and of their own incompetence. These were the basic perceptions that prompted the students to negotiate their clinical learning experience. Student negotiations took three basic forms: the creation of new learning opportunities, the manipulation of existing learning resources, and interpretation of events and behaviors. Students' negotiations were constrained by the structure of the education program and the students' own assertiveness. The study's findings indicate that the students were active negotiators of the content and the conduct of their own professional education and professional socialization. Even in the face of overwhelming demands on their intellectual and emotional resources, the students expressed their individual and collective intent for their educational experience. The study findings were similar to those of earlier studies of professional socialization, although new behaviors and behaviors inconsistent with those found in previous research were uncovered. Contributions to the literature on professional socialization and to an understanding of this phenomenon were made through the explanation of these inconsistencies.
