Is self-serving lying intuitive? Or does honesty come naturally? Many experiments have manipulated reliance on intuition in behavioral-dishonesty tasks, with mixed results. We present two meta-analyses (with evidential value) testing whether an intuitive mind-set affects the proportion of liars ( k = 73; n = 12,711) and the magnitude of lying ( k = 50; n = 6,473). The results indicate that when dishonesty harms abstract others, promoting intuition causes more people to lie, log odds ratio = 0.38, p = .0004, and people to lie more, Hedges’s g = 0.26, p < .0001. However, when dishonesty inflicts harm on concrete others, promoting intuition has no significant effect on dishonesty ( p > .63). We propose one potential explanation: The intuitive appeal of prosociality may cancel out the intuitive selfish appeal of dishonesty, suggesting that the social consequences of lying could be a promising key to the riddle of intuition’s role in honesty. We discuss limitations such as the relatively unbalanced distribution of studies using concrete versus abstract victims and the overall large interstudy heterogeneity.

Intuition, the “first awareness,” is receiving increased attention in numerous fields. Although intuition has direct application to social work practice and education, this transrational way of knowing is rarely acknowledged in the literature. This paper will: (1) provide a brief description of a context for intuition in social work; (2) present the results of an inquiry sent to social work educators on the inclusion of intuition in their curricula; and (3) provide results of a study of the attitude toward, and awareness of, intuition of students who were exposed to this concept to make a case for the inclusion of intuition in the social work curriculum.

People differ in the belief that their intuitions produce good decision outcomes. In the present research, we sought to test the validity of these beliefs by comparing individuals’ self-reports with measures of actual intuition performance in a standard implicit learning task, exposing participants to seemingly random letter strings (Studies 1a–b) and social media profile pictures (Study 2) that conformed to an underlying rule or grammar. A meta-analysis synthesizing the present data ( N = 400) and secondary data by Pretz, Totz, and Kaufman found that people’s enduring beliefs in their intuitions were not reflective of actual performance in the implicit learning task. Meanwhile, task-specific confidence in intuition bore no sizable relation with implicit learning performance, but the observed data favoured neither the null hypothesis nor the alternative hypothesis. Together, the present findings suggest that people’s ability to judge the veracity of their intuitions may be limited.

How does cognitive sophistication impact cooperation? We explore this question using a model of the co-evolution of cooperation and cognition. In our model, agents confront social dilemmas and coordination games, and make decisions using intuition or deliberation. Intuition is automatic and effortless, but relatively (although not necessarily completely) insensitive to context. Deliberation, conversely, is costly but relatively (although not necessarily perfectly) sensitive to context. We find that regardless of the sensitivity of intuition and imperfection of deliberation, deliberating undermines cooperation in social dilemmas, whereas deliberating can increase cooperation in coordination games if intuition is sufficiently sensitive. Furthermore, when coordination games are sufficiently likely, selection favours a strategy whose intuitive response ignores the contextual cues available and cooperates across contexts. Thus, we see how simple cognition can arise from active selection for simplicity, rather than just be forced to be simple due to cognitive constraints. Finally, we find that when deliberation is imperfect, the favoured strategy increases cooperation in social dilemmas (as a result of reducing deliberation) as the benefit of cooperation to the recipient increases.

Det här är en kandidat uppsats i företagsekonomi med inriktning marknadsföring som är gjord på Handels- och IT Högskolan I Borås. Inriktningen på uppsatsen är sponsring och vi har valt att fokusera studien på hur företag använder sig av strategisk sponsring. Syftet med rapporten är att kartlägga hur företag arbetar med strategisk sponsring samt försöka skapa en förståelse kring hur företagen i undersökningen beslut om sponsrings ser ut. Resultatet av studien är tänkt att även kunna hjälpa de som söker sponsring att utveckla erbjudanden till sina sponsorer. Vi har utfört en litteraturstudie och intervjuer med sex olika företag. Efter genomförd studie så framkom flera olika aspekter av sponsring, bland annat att alla företagen i undersökningen arbetar med sponsring. Det framkom även att företagen i undersökningen ibland sponsrar bara för att uppnå goodwill och att de inte heller har någon nedskriven sponsringspolicy med ett undantag. Några av de slutsatser som vi kom fram till är att de lokala företagen i undersökningen kan sponsra mer lokalt på ett sätt som de större konkurrenterna inte kan vilket gör att de lokala företagen i undersökningen tjänar mer på den lokala sponsringen. De deltagande företagen använder sponsring även som nätverk då de genom sin sponsring får tillgång till ett nätverk med de andra sponsrande företagen. Nätverk är ett bra exempel på vad sponsorsökande aktörer kan ta med i sitt erbjudande när de söker sponsring. Vi har även märkt en tydlig brist hos företagen i undersökningen av att använda sponsringen i sin övriga marknadsföring. Vi anser därför att de tappar mycket värde av sponsringen.

Att det idag finns flera metoder och modeller för att fatta beslut är inte konstigt då beslutsfattande sker varje dag och i vissa sammanhang kan ge ödesdigra konsekvenser om det blir fel. Denna kandidatuppsats kan ses som en förstudie för hur naturligt beslutsfattande skulle kunna stödjas genom en förbättrad utbildning till beslutsfattare. Uppsatsen ämnar behandla naturligt beslutsfattande och intuition hos experter inom räddningstjänsten, närmare bestämt om de använder intuition och i så fall vad som ligger till grund för denna intuition. Intervjuer utfördes på räddningstjänsten i Motala efter critical decision method som är framtagen för cognitive task analysis. Inom räddningstjänsten använder sig befälen av intuition när de tar det flesta av sina beslut i fält. Resultaten av intervjuerna pekar på att intuition verkar ske undermedvetet vilket ger stöd för recognition primed decision model, i kombination med negativa ledtrådar och hävstångspunkter.

BACKGROUND: When it comes to corporate decision making, the traditional rational model suggests that deliberative analysis yields good results. Thus, when contemplating strategic moves, executives are “required” to conduct deliberative analyses. As today’s business environment is becoming increasingly complex and fast-paced, however, executives often face the dilemma of having to make carefully considered strategic decisions on the one hand and not having enough time on the other hand. Intuition offers an efficient solution in this situation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate how corporate executives employ both rationality and intuition in making strategic decisions under uncertain, complex and time-pressured circumstances. RESEARCH METHOD: We conducted three face-to-face interviews with executives from three companies in Sweden. Each interview lasted around one hour.    RESULTS: Drawing on previous psychological and managerial research, we argue that rationality and intuition are better viewed as being complementary rather than separate. Findings from the study suggest that intuition could serve as an effective and efficient means for managers to make strategic decisions; and that intuition indeed plays a role in strategic decision making under complex, uncertain and time limited contexts.

In this thesis, I discuss how the undergraduate computer scientist is trained, and how they learn what I am calling computational intuition. Computational intuition describes the methodology in which computer scientists approach their problems and solve them through the use of computers. Computational intuition is a series of skills and a way of thinking or approaching problems that students learn throughout their education. The main way that computational intuition is taught to students is through the experience they gain as they work on homework and classwork problems. To develop computational intuition, students learn explicit knowledge and techniques as well as knowledge that is tacit and harder to teach within the lectures of a classroom environment. Computational intuition includes concepts that professors and students discuss which include “computer science intuition,” “computational thinking,” general problem solving skills or heuristics, and trained judgement. This way of learning is often social, and I draw on the pedagogy of cognitive apprenticeship to understand the interactions between the professors, tutors, and other students help learners gain an understanding of the “computer science intuition.” It is this method of thinking that computer scientists at the Claremont Colleges have stated as being one of the most essential items that should be taught and gained throughout their education and signals a wider understanding of computer science as a field.

Utbildningen till Studie- och yrkesvägledare vid Malmö högskola är tre år lång. Under dessa tre år läggs mycket tid ner på att studera själva samtalet i vägledningssituationen. Vi studenter kommer i framtiden att möta olika typer av människor som var och en har sin egen unika livsvärld, byggd på erfarenheter och upplevelser. För att kunna möta alla dessa människor på ett respektfullt sätt och inleda ett samtal behöver vi kunna skapa kontakt, stämma av och knyta samman våra livsvärldar i ett temporärt förtroendefullt samarbetsavtal under själva vägledningssamtalet. Denna fas inom vägledningsområdet kallas för Tuning in. Syftet med detta fördjupningsarbete är att öka vår förståelse för vad begreppet tuning in innebär, samt ta reda på vilka kompetenser som en studie- och yrkesvägledare använder sig av i tuning in-fasen. Vi vill även utforska om det finns tyst kompetens hos studie- och yrkesvägledarna i tuning in-fasen som behöver begreppsliggöras. Vi har valt att analysera våra resultat genom tre från varandra skilda teoretikers tankar, Lev Vygotskij, Martin Buber och Donald Schön. Genom observationer, intervjuer och långvariga reflekterande fördjupningssamtal kring vår studie och dess resultat har vi skapat en bild som återger och begreppsliggör den kompetens som en erfaren och professionell studie- och yrkesvägledare inom det svenska utbildningsväsendet faktiskt besitter. Resultatet av vårt arbete är att de synliga kompetenser som en erfaren studie- och yrkesvägledare använder sig av i tuning in-fasen är medvetenhet, självkännedom och reflektionsförmåga. De tysta kompetenser hos en erfaren studie- och yrkesvägledare, som har synliggjorts ur vår studie och som vi begreppsliggjort är professionell intuition och följsamhet.

Denna studie är grundad i intervjuer som ägde rum på en reklambyrå. Studiens syfte är att utforska innebörden av 'kreativitet' i reklamvärlden. I intervjuerna betonade informanterna i synnerhet vikten av att reklam kommunicerar genom känslor och emotioner. I denna uppsats ges en närmare inblick i vad informanterna anser att känslor och emotioner har för innebörd för reklamskapande. Detta görs genom att tillämpa fenomenologisk teori. Den fenomenologiska analysen förser oss med en djupare och mer vidsträckt förståelse för den intuitiva kunskap informanterna förmedlar. Den öppnar således upp förståelsen för varför känslor och emotioner anses vara grundläggande för reklamskapande. Utifrån en fenomenologisk förståelse för känslor och emotioner diskuteras sedan reklamens roll i samhället i helhet.
This study is based on interviews that took place in an advertising agency. The purpose of the study is to explore the meaning of 'creativity' in the world of advertising. In the interviews, the interviewees especially pointed out the importance of feelings and emotions as a means for communication in advertisement. This thesis provides a closer view of the significance feelings and emotions are considered to have in advertising. This is done by ways of phenomenological theory. The phenomenological analysis provides us with a deeper and more far-reaching understanding of the intuitive knowledge that is brought forth by the interviewees. It opens up an understanding of why feelings and emotions are considered to play a fundamental part in the creation of advertisement. Based on a phenomenological understanding of feelings and emotions I will then discuss what part advertising plays in society as a whole.

The emphasis of the inquiry is on the domain of education and the relationship present between the teacher and student more specifically. Essentially, the first part of the thesis outlines how the larger social-political system impacts the domain of public education, with the predominant issues of adversity becoming manifest at the level of the relationship that exists between teacher and student. The second part of the work utilizes the problems discovered and their impact on human experience to propose a virtue/care based method for approaching the relationship with the student in a way that both aligns more closely with the movement of experience, while also functioning to assist the student in shaping their own moral character. Essentially, the method being proposed is something that is meant to assist the teacher in her attempts to communicate with the student in a more personal sort of way, thus allowing for a higher degree of understanding of the unique personality of each student, with this understanding leading the teacher to form a more flexible approach that takes into account the various personalities of the students. In so doing the teacher is working to bring the experience of the student into the educative process, which should thereby increase student performance through their feeling more involved in the education being received.

The aim of this master’s thesis is to obtain greater understanding of how children relate to the film medium and their experiences. This is obtained by listening to the children and observing their verbal and nonverbal communication in two focus group interviews. Children’s access to and selection of film are due to adult’s restrictions. Science has focused on the side effects that come along when children are exposed to violent action films. As a theoretical starting point, I used communication theory and Argyle’s (1972) non verbal codes to interpret the children’s body language. The empirical results are linked to earlier research and analysed according to four different themes, all connected to the nonverbal codes. The children like the strong feelings that come along with their experiences; still they want to understand the plot in the films. They explain to each other when they can connect to their own experiences and seek for support when needed. They express mixed feelings when it comes to downloading from the Internet because it is illegal, yet they are excited over the fact that it takes a short time and they appreciate to have access. Watching film gives a different kind of understanding compared to reading, since more senses are involved. The children don’t believe producers will make more films suited to children’s wants and needs in the future.

While there is no definitive agenda for making cities smarter in terms of mobility, intuition says that information is key. However, contrarily to a more technical view, information should not only be consumed by the users, but also produced by them. This is already happening (smart-phones, social networks) but is far from being exploited by technical systems related to transportation. In this paper I discuss some of the issues related to more human-centered transportation system. It is argued that users of this system are somehow influencing it with their increasing coupled behaviors. Thus, there is a real opportunity for changing the paradigm in order to take advantage of the collective intelligence.

Abstract This paper explores how students learn engineering, paying particular attention to development of engineering intuition. Examination of traditional engineering curricula reveals that design and analysis are taught in separate classes. In contrast, learning theory and engineering design practice suggest engineering is best learned through integrated experiences. “Synalysis exercises”, which integrate activities in problem formulation, analysis and synthesis, have been developed to study integrated learning. Video analysis of the exercises reveals how students use formal knowledge in practice, the processes by which they learn and the social context in which learning occurs. The integration of dissimilar activities in synalysis exercises is found to evoke questioning behavior and to provide resources for answering questions. The exercises are explored as a tool for educational assessment.

Designers have recently borrowed a tool called ethnography from social scientists to develop empathy and understanding for a user group before designing a product. This tool is particularly important for designers from the developed world working on products for customers in developing communities as differences in culture, language, and life experience make the designer’s intuition less reliable in the context of product use. This paper reports the use of engineering ethnography under a variety of conditions in the developing world. The authors worked in three different communities with varying degrees of language familiarity, cultural familiarity, and partners within the community in an effort to understand how each of those factors affects the process of conducting an ethnographic study. The results will help other engineers choose the most appropriate ethnographic activities for their particular project and situation.

Statistical relational models such as Markov logic networks (MLNs) and hinge-loss Markov random fields (HL-MRFs) are specified using templated weighted first-order logic clauses, leading to the creation of complex, yet easy to encode models that effectively combine uncertainty and logic. Learning the structure of these models from data reduces the human effort of identifying the right structures. In this work, we present an asynchronous deep reinforcement learning algorithm to automatically learn HL-MRF clause structures. Our algorithm possesses the ability to learn semantically meaningful structures that appeal to human intuition and understanding, while simultaneously being able to learn structures from data, thus learning structures that have both the desirable qualities of interpretability and good prediction performance. The asynchronous nature of our algorithm further provides the ability to learn diverse structures via exploration, while remaining scalable. We demonstrate the ability of the models to learn semantically meaningful structures that also achieve better prediction performance when compared with a greedy search algorithm, a path-based algorithm, and manually defined clauses on two computational social science applications: i) modeling recovery in alcohol use disorder, and ii) detecting bullying.

Social, economic and technological changes constantly change business landscape and raise an array of challenges to organisations. Organizations have to adapt to the environmental changes and maintain competitiveness and flexibility. Thus, changes aim to transform current state of organisations, to increase productivity and competitive advantage in the market. On the other hand, a number of investigations confirm that majority of organisational changes fail and do not produce an expected performance. Scientific literature suggests various management methods and links these methods to the desirable outcomes. Considering the fact that organisations are unique systems, some change management models do not capture such aspects as exceptional experience, culture, intuition of managers, etc. These issues lead to the restricted application of majority of models or methods. The opinions of scholars about definition and measurement of success diverge. The paper aims to investigate the factors impacting and restricting organisational changes. Particular emphasis is put on the success as the desirable outcome of all initiatives. The investigation is based on analysis and synthesis of scientific literature. A case of service providing company is presented. The paper integrates the main researches in the field and provides insights and recommendations into future investigations.

Acknowledging the Anthropocene crisis, my research examines myth and myth-making to reimagine the role of Claude Lévi-Strauss’ bricoleur concept. Following Joseph M. Coll’s Taoist and Buddhist systemic thinking inspired theory of sustainable transformation, the practice-led project evolves into the making of an essayist film that conveys a specific personal myth.My research reckons that a bricoleur should perceive myth-making as an organic growing organisation that acquires intuition and posteriori knowledge. And focus on a narrative that evolves into the mythic identity of a piece of coal and a bar-tailed godwit corresponding to designated oppositional values and semiotic assets. Apart from the practitioner works of Stan Brakhage, Chris Marker and Adam Curtis, my research also dives into Elysia Crampton Chuquimia, Howie Lee and Yaksha‘s musical languages to explore the other narrative possibilities when re-examining history in a socially conscious manner. As the film soundtrack is also part of the myth-making production. My practice-led project inevitably evolves into the subject of the self as the production presents a negotiation through metaphors and signifiers concerning memory, history and experience. The filmmaking echoes a search for the wisdom of self-acceptance. It adopts Stephen Yablo’s understanding of conceivability to generate and regenerate meaningful assets. Concepts are planted to grow into newer representations compromising posteriori knowledge and self-realisations, with informal syllogistic reasoning concerning the epistemological nature of imagination and the transformative structure of myth. The contextual knowledge of my research examines the subject of myth and myth-making through Jacques Lacan's theory of fantasy, Jungian analytical psychology and Claude Lévi-Strauss knowledge of structural linguistics. It adopts Lévi-Strauss’ canonical myth formula concerning the missing discussion of experience, community, and the wilder contexts of shamanology. Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological body and Martin Heidegger's thoughts on the philosophy of technology concerning the body-to-technology relation and the notion of symbolic light and darkness. With critics on the instrumentalist stance of technology and Rene Descartes's modal metaphysics concerning Arnold Gehlen’s conservative alert of mankind’s debased condition of modern existence, my research proposes that myth-making is a necessary altruistic form of social technology that can transform experience into wisdom. Acknowledging that will is the priority for behaviour change. The production examines the Dao of myth and myth-making as a specific technological answer to resolve David Attenborough's calling for a global transformation and collaboration in his book A Life of Our Planet. To further develop such a technology, my research seeks a systemic understanding of myth and myth-making. Therefore, my research hypothesis a wholistic and heuristic methodology, namely Daoist bricoleur. By experiencing a personal myth, I celebrate my Manchu and Chinese culture origin and the complexity of my upbringing. My research visits the endangered Manchu Ulabun storytelling tradition and reckons the film production rely on the structural establishment of critical mythic fragments founded on autobiography and social conventions. As a permanent resident of New Zealand born in a coal-mining town in eastern Inner Mongolia, China, with an unverifiable ancestral clan name related to Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty and much more.

Neste contexto, este estudo elabora uma análise do Participa.br que viabiliza o reconhecimento dos elementos, relacionamentos e atores contidos na plataforma, com intuito de identificar organizações com alto grau de influências em políticas voltadas para Governo Eletrônico. As técnicas de análise de redes sociais permitiram identificar as relações entre consultas públicas e as sugestões que contribuíram para evolução das políticas.

A popularização dos dispositivos móveis e a crescente difusão das redes sociais fomentou o desenvolvimento de aplicativos com o intuito de gerenciar e incentivar interações através de seus dispositivos. Este artigo apresenta um modelo de rede social espontânea destinada a fomentar a interação dos participantes de eventos, como conferências e congressos. Além de apresentar o modelo, denominado Mingle, mostraremos o protótipo criado para experimentação. A avaliação seguiu duas visões, a primeira focando estatísticas de acesso ao ambiente e a segunda verificando usabilidade, eficácia, eficiência e satisfação dos usuários. Resultados demonstraram boa recepção do Mingle e potencial para implantação em maior escala.

Abstract This paper examines decision making under radical uncertainty in engineering design, that is, engineering decision making in those situations where it is not possible to know the outcomes and/or construct the utility functions and probabilities needed to support rational-human decision making. In these situations, despite being faced with radical uncertainty, engineers do (and must) proceed forward in a linear, clear, and predictable manner. Yet, they may not proceed in a manner that is well described by current engineering design frameworks. Examining the role of decision making in business and other social enterprises, Tuckett and Nikolic [1] have proposed conviction narrative theory (CNT) to describe how rational decision-makers confronted with situations in which insufficient information is available to support traditional decision-making tools use narrative and intuition to reach convincing and actionable decisions. This paper proposes that, in a manner similar to what is described in CNT, narrative and engineering judgment play a critical role in engineering design situations dominated by radical uncertainty. To that end, this paper integrates the traditional rational-human view of decision making as expressed by Hazelrigg in the well-known Decision-Based Design (DBD) framework and CNT as proposed by Tuckett and Nikolic. In the resulting rational, narrative-based design framework, narrative structures are used to describe and develop design alternatives and provide the ideas, beliefs, and preferences needed by the DBD framework. The resulting preferred design is expressed as a narrative and tested using engineering judgement. Specifically, the goal of the design process is expressed as a high-level guiding narrative that fosters the development of design narratives (design alternatives), and ultimately results in a convincing narrative that describes the preferred design. The high-level guiding narrative outlines the event(s), entity(s), preferences, and beliefs needed to support the design. The design narratives are narrative fragments that are nested within the high-level narrative and include the proposed action (idea), the specific challenges that the design faces, and the possible (but not yet verified) outcomes. The convincing narrative is the validated, preferred option that results from the DBD analysis and optimization process and is reviewed using engineering judgement. Following development of the rational, narrative-based design framework, the value of the framework is discussed within the context of practical engineering design.

The significance of this project is that it promotes a collaborative and multidisciplinary methodology that works with community groups to advocate to corporate entities for a wider social and environmental awareness of specific sites. This paper aims to explain the processes and findings of the project to date through both its successes and failures. It also proposes the possibility of the methodology being transferred to undergraduate and post-graduate study as a tool to promote multi-disciplined collaborate project briefs that focus on community well being.

Vitorino Magalhães Godinho, nos anos de 1970, lançou as bases do que viriam a ser os estudos sobre emigração, ao longo da história, no livro Estrutura da Antiga Sociedade Portuguesa e no seu artigo no primeiro número da revista de História Económica e Social. Esta comunicação pretende discutir os valores de saídas apresentados pelo autor em trabalhos que se tornaram clássicos e inúmeras vezes repetidos. Para tal será feita uma análise dos números lançados por Godinho e uma comparação com os dados apresentados por outros investigadores com o intuito de rever a historiografia sobre o assunto e testar a validade dos seus números – que alguns autores consideram demasiado elevados. Interessa a este estudo perceber também quais as fontes utilizadas para este tipo de abordagens, principalmente até ao século XVIII, antes da introdução do passaporte. Para o fazer será utilizado o estudo de caso do Brasil, território que, ao longo da época moderna, foi concentrando os destinos de emigração daqueles que partiam do reino para fora da Europa. Esta metodologia servirá para discutir as vantagens dos estudos dirigidos a espaços específicos para um apuramento mais afinado do número total de migrantes. Será ainda avançada uma proposta de fonte que pode ser usada com este objetivo: os processos inquisitoriais. A riqueza desta documentação é sobejamente conhecida dos historiadores, mas o seu potencial como fonte para o estudo da emigração numa perspetiva macro é ainda pouco divulgado. Através dela poderemos calcular a dimensão da emigração para determinados espaços, com o Nordeste à cabeça, e perceber também motivações para a partida ou a fixação num território em particular. Estes processos servirão ainda para determinar de onde estes migrantes são naturais, com Lisboa a assumir um peso que contraria os resultados expectáveis junto da bibliografia, ainda que o Entre Douro e Minho mantenha a preponderância.
