Many species use multicomponent signals communication systems in different signal modalities. Here, we study visual and acoustic signals produced in the context of mate choice on a sexually monomorphically ornamented seabird, the king penguin. We identified a sex-specific syllable pattern in the vocalisations of 1-year-old fledglings, juveniles and adult birds. We found that fundamental frequency and energy components of calls and beak spot and ear patch ornament parameters signal information about the age-class of the emitter. Investigating the vocal apparatus of adult king penguins, we showed that king penguins can produce “two voices” since they have a tracheobronchial syrinx, i.e. two sound sources. This thesis contributed to our understanding of signals used in mate choice in a sexually monomorphically ornamented species that exhibits a very costly breeding behaviour

Communication is ubiquitous in our everyday life. Yet, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties in social interactions and to recognize socially relevant signals from the face and the voice. Such impairments can vastly affect the quality of life - a profound understanding of the mechanisms behind these difficulties is thus strongly required. In the current dissertation, I focused on sensory brain mechanisms that underlie the perception of emotionally neutral communication signals that so far have gained little attention in ASD research. I studied the malleability of voice-identity processing using intranasal administration of oxytocin, and thus the potential to alleviate voice-identity recognition impairments in ASD. Furthermore, I investigated brain mechanisms that underlie recognition difficulties for visual speech in ASD, as until now evidence on visual-speech recognition in ASD was limited to behavioral findings. I applied methods of functional magnetic resonance imaging, eye tracking, and behavioral testing. The contribution of the present dissertation is twofold. First, the findings corroborate the view that atypical sensory perception is a critical cornerstone for understanding of social difficulties in ASD. Dysfunction of visual and auditory sensory brain regions might contribute to difficulties in processing aspects of communication signals in ASD and modulate the efficacy of interventions for improving the behavioral deficits. Second, the findings deliver empirical support for a recent theoretical model of how the typically developing brain perceives dynamic faces. This improved our current knowledge about brain processing of visual communication signals in the typically developing population. Advanced scientific knowledge about human communication, as provided in the current dissertation, propels further empirical research and development of clinical interventions that aim to promote communication abilities in affected individuals.

Studies on animal bioacoustics, traditionally relying on non-human primate and songbird models, converge towards the idea that social life appears as the main driving force behind the evolution of complex communication. Comparisons with cetaceans is also particularly interesting from an evolutionary point of view. They are indeed mammals forming complex social bonds, with abilities in acoustic plasticity, but that had to adapt to marine life, making habitat another determining selection force. Their natural habitat constrains sound production, usage and perception but, in the same way, constrains ethological observations making studies of captive cetaceans an important source of knowledge on these animals. Beyond the analysis of acoustic structures, the study of the social contexts in which the different vocalizations are used is essential to the understanding of vocal communication. Compared to primates and birds, the social function of dolphins’ acoustic signals remains largely misunderstood. Moreover, the way cetaceans’ vocal apparatus and auditory system adapted morphoanatomically to an underwater life is unique in the animal kingdom. But their ability to perceive sounds produced in the air remains controversial due to the lack of experimental demonstrations. The objectives of this thesis were, on the one hand, to explore the spontaneous contextual usage of acoustic signals in a captive group of bottlenose dolphins and, on the other hand, to test experimentally underwater and aerial abilities in auditory perception. Our first observational study describes the daily life of our dolphins in captivity, and shows that vocal signalling reflects, at a large scale, the temporal distribution of social and non-social activities in a facility under human control. Our second observational study focuses on the immediate context of emission of the three main acoustic categories previously identified in the dolphins’ vocal repertoire, i.e. whistles, burst-pulses and click trains. We found preferential associations between each vocal category and specific types of social interactions and identified context-dependent patterns of sound combinations. Our third study experimentally tested, under standardized conditions, the response of dolphins to human-made individual sound labels broadcast under and above water. We found that dolphins were able to recognize and to react only to their own label, even when broadcast in the air. Apart from confirming aerial hearing, these findings go in line with studies supporting that dolphins possess a concept of identity. Overall, the results obtained during this thesis suggest that some social signals in the dolphin repertoire can be used to communicate specific information about the behavioural contexts of the individuals involved and that individuals are able to generalize their concept of identity for human-generated signals

Parental investment to increase survivability of the young is often optimised by signalling emitted by the young and informing the parents of their level of need. In this thesis, we explored whether the behaviour of ant larvae could be analysed as food solicitations as defined by honest communication models. Indeed, ants are highly social and their social relations differ from the social relation in parent-offspring systems which is usually analysed for food solicitations. We therefore tested, in the ant Ectatomma tuberculatum, whether behaviour of the larvae was correlated with the level of need and if workers provisioned larvae with food according to the intensity of the signal, as predicted by honest signalling models. We showed in this thesis that movements displayed by the larvae as well as a larval volatile emission could influence food provisioning by workers. Larval movements increase with larval developmental stage and volatile emission vary with nutritional state of the larvae. Nurse and forager workers could then optimise food resources allocation inside the nest thanks to signals or cues from the larvae. However, we also show that several other proximal factors are involved. Larval movements are not freely displayed but follow a contact with a worker, and spatial organisation of workers and larvae influences larval movements and food provisioning. Thus we propose alternative or complementary hypotheses to the communication hypothesis

The demand for broadband services over PLC (powerline communications) networks has been growing rapidly during the recent past due to the availability of infrastructures and low deployment costs. This kind of network supports multiple high-speed traffics with seamless connectivity among multiple nodes and access points. In this context, efficient management of available resources through allocation policies is needed to satisfy the quality of service requirements. These policies consist in determining efficient rules for allocating resources in order to optimize the transmission rates in PLC network. This thesis proposes resource allocation strategies to increase transmission rates in single and multi-user contexts. However, the transmission characteristics of the powerline channel are less favorable for data transfer, since it was originally not designed for that purpose. To exploit these difficult channel conditions, data is transmitted via a waveform combining the linear precoding technique and the multicarrier OFDM modulation scheme, leading to the LP-OFDM (linear precoding OFDM) solution. Assuming a perfect knowledge of the channel conditions at the transmitter side, this combination allows a more efficient utilization of the available transmission power. The achieved data rates are then increased by adapting modulation orders, transmitted power levels and the distribution of time-frequency resources, to the channel conditions. The main objective of this thesis is to study and optimize distribution strategies, for one or more users, of different subchannels (subcarriers in OFDM case and precoding sequences in LP-OFDM case) of the multicarrier systems and the bits and powers allocated to these subchannels. First, the problem of maximizing the bit rate is studied in a single user context and uses as the basis for multi-user context. A new resource allocation algorithm for LP-OFDM systems with minimum mean square error equalizer is proposed and constitutes the first original contribution. In addition, two novel bit and power allocation algorithms, with low complexity, are proposed to maximize the total bit rate while satisfying a bit error rate constraint. Then, a physical layer approach of multicast communications is addressed for LP-OFDM systems. The proposed methods better exploit the diversities of transmission links to increase the users' bit rates. Compared to the conventional resource allocation method in multicast OFDM systems, simulation results show bit rate gains up to 70% with linear precoding based methods. Finally, the possibility for several users to simultaneously access to the same physical medium is analysed for PLC networks. Current powerline communication systems are characterized by multiple access methods where different users transmit their signals in separate time intervals. New resource allocation algorithms are then proposed and analysed for simultaneous transmission over the same physical medium, in centralized and decentralized manner. The results show the interest of the LP-OFDM solution

Oral communication plays a key role in social and professional relations. Face-to-face interview, appreciated in managerial and commercial areas, remains the richest human interpersonal interaction thanks to innate and joint use of verbal and non-verbal social cues. That is the reason why at Zero to One Technology, we develop a diagnostic and pedagogical tool : the Comscope. With simulated and recorded interview practicing, then by extracting and analyzing automatically social cues, it provides measurement of the quality of the interaction in order to improve it. The research for this thesis is principally directed towards the analysis of gaze signal. In order to do so, we created new estimators for head-pose, gaze direction and time of focus of attention on the interlocutor. All the estimators are based on facial landmarks detection and iris location extraction. By use of low-resolution video recording devices in visible light, they must work together in real time and in uncontrolled environment. We also created away of assessing automatically the technical quality of an interview by classification. We used the features extracted from gaze (eye movements and fixations, time of attention), speech (speaking time estimation and transcript of exchange : lexicology analysis, interview labelling), and their multimodal and crossed analysis

The signaling perspective argues that when a firm limits the extent of its sustainability disclosure, it prevents stakeholders from evaluating its achieved degree of sustainability performance, and may thus reach higher financial returns. However, transparency is an institutionalized norm that stakeholders value, and firms may not be able to limit their disclosure without being penalized. This thesis therefore raises the question of whether firms can strategically limit their sustainability disclosure to reach higher profits, or if pressure for conformity to the norm of transparency exists and weakens such strategies. Using econometrical methods, this thesis empirically shows that sustainability raters do not converge in their assessment of firms’ sustainability performance, supporting the assumption that firmsmay prevent stakeholders from evaluating their actual degree of sustainability. It also shows that less sustainable and more reputed firms are more likely to limit their sustainability disclosure, that highly sustainable firms encounter higher short and long term financial returns when they adopt an extensive disclosure, and that less sustainable firms, on the contrary are more profitable in the short term when theylimit their disclosure. This thesis therefore shows that in line with the signaling perspective, firms may strategically adjust the extent on their disclosure to reach higher returns in the short term. However, in the long term, normative pressure for transparency is too high and weakens the benefits of such strategies

A question arises regularly on the situation of the Deaf of the Belle Epoque, which is commonly called deaf-dumb. Indeed, following the wishes of the Milan Congress requesting the adoption of a new method of education of deaf children, the pure oral method, banning sign language, the situation of the deaf community is thereby changed, and more particularly from the highest categories, and the lowest. The impact of educational reform Milan combines with the evolution of manners during this period have profoundly changed the structure of the deaf community, seeing the emergence of particular families, consisting of fully deaf members. However, this trend is accompanied by a significant erosion among the most educated groups gradually disappear. Indeed, the reform of Milan seems no longer afford to train educated beings, and it pays particular attention to them talk. This change of priorities seems to cut the link between the school and the community, especially dried up the arrival of new generations capable of taking over the old. However, the Belle Epoque is also an intellectually inspired period of importance, with an unpublished literary production. This mask profusion actually a beginning of cultural and artistic decline becomes obvious that from the 1920s, accompanied by profound social upheaval

The research focuses on the distances between visitors and the works exhibited in the art exhibition, specifically those that are both peripheral to the artifacts, imposed by visitor rules and regulations, bounded by barriers, cords, pedestals, floor tapes, among other things, are often maintained by visitors, are generally recognized as being destined toConsidering that they are part of a media device, it is important to understand how they contribute to the latter. The theoretical study of the regulating lines and margins of the text's media supports the construction of the concept of "peri-operative margins", making it possible to qualify the distances between works and visitors and to make the hypothesis that they participate in the exhibition by fulfilling several semiotic functions and roles. The theoretical study of the museum art exhibition leads to a communicative approach to the peri-operative margins, which consists of understanding them from the three enunciating processes in which they are produced and endowed with meaning - that is, the regulation of the visit to the museum exhibition, the setting up of the museum exhibition, and the visual capture of the works exhibited during the visit to the museum exhibition. The study of peri-operative margins is then thought out in three surveys dedicated respectively to each of the processes identified and based on the analysis of "objects" that are inherent in these processes and that prefigure, configure and update the peri-operative margins - i. e. visit regulations and behavioural prohibitions, distance tools and expographic margins, visitor behaviours and alignments. The first survey makes it possible to establish that, as they appear in the regulations governing the visit to the museum exhibition, the peri-operative margins fulfil the functions of measures for the protection of property and persons and access to works within certain physical limits and the role of rules governing the visit to the art museum exhibition. The second survey suggests that, as they materialize when the museum exhibition is set up, the peri-operal margins perform the same functions as the vector signs of attention and interpretation and the roles of signposts and physical traces of enunciation. The third survey makes it possible to determine that, as manifested in the visual capture of the exhibited works, the peri-operative margins assume the functions of signs of engagement in the interaction situation and situational properties and the roles of postural clues of co-enonciation and ritual figures. In sum, the study of the peri-operative margins reveals that, because of their multiple semiotic functions and roles, they participate in the communicational functioning and socio-symbolic operability of the art museum exhibition
