Adaptive reuse (AR) of heritage buildings is a complex process due to the involvement of many actions and actors, which influence the results of the projects. The effectiveness of AR projects can be described by various criteria. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the criteria of effectiveness in AR projects with the final scope to guide and improve the AR process. A review of the jury reports of two highly prestigious awards in the Netherlands (NRP Golden Phoenix award) and Europe (Europa Nostra) has been conducted. In total, the reports of 48 cases have been reviewed. The five criteria mentioned in the regulations of the NRP award have been used to categorize the aspects mentioned in the jury reports of both awards. These criteria are: “social value creation”, “sublimation (both architectural and cultural aspects)”, “environmental sustainability”, “economic value creation”, and “innovation”. This review reveals that “social value creation” and “sublimation” are among the most highlighted criteria that the juries considered for the effectiveness of AR projects. Often aspects mentioned for these criteria overlap partially with those aspects mentioned in the criterion of “economic value creation”. This indicates that enhancement of the qualities of heritage buildings and their surroundings and improvement of the social values and the resulting positive economic effects are strictly interrelated. The overview of the criteria of effectiveness, as defined in this work, will serve as a basis for the investigation of the tools and methods which can be used in the AR process to achieve these criteria.

Green public procurement (GPP) is a policy tool aiming to achieve environmental protection and resource reservation via public procurement. After decades of adaptation, what promotes and hinders its uptake in public contracting remains difficult to discern. This research explores factors that influence the adoption of green award criteria, covering features of procurement procedures, purchasers, tenderers, and the business sectors through empirical analysis of Probit regression combined with a fixed term method. The data is contract award notices (CAN) from 33 countries in Europe in 2018. Our findings suggest that framework agreements, the medical products sector, the health and social services sector, and the business services sector are negatively correlated with whether a contract is green. On the other hand, the contract value, Government Procurement Agreement (GPA)coverage, joint procurement, competitive dialogue, negotiation with competition (with a call for competition), restricted procedure, transport equipment sector, and food sector can positively correlate with green contracts, or these factors increase the possibility of a contract being green. Explicit explanations on these relations are provided. This research identifies factors relating with and influencing the application of green award criteria in public contracts, which would inform public sectors on efficient resources allocation in terms of increasing green public procurement performance.

The present article reviews the emerging conceptual themes from the case law of the European Court of Justice which have triggered the revision of the public procurement Directives, and the alignment of the public procurement acquis with the Europe 2020 Growth Strategy. The Court's jurisprudence has instrumentally influenced the interpretation of public procurement legal concepts such as contracting authorities, the remit of selection and qualification criteria, the parameters for contracting authorities to use environmental and social considerations as award criteria and the principles which underpin the remedies in the award of public contracts. However, the exhaustive harmonization which is inherent in the public procurement directives has caused significant porosity and limitations in the effectiveness of the public procurement acquis. Service concessions, contracts awarded by a contracting authority to another contracting authority on the basis of exclusive rights, public-public partnerships and in-house contractual relations, and contracts which fall below the stipulated value thresholds all reflect upon the forthcoming reforms of the public procurement regime.

The aim of the article is to discuss the issue of green public procurement in the context of public contract award procedures applied by social welfare centres from the Łódź Province (voivodeship) in Poland. The topic is set against the backdrop of the existing theories of green public procurement, a circular economy and sustainable development. The author applies the case study method, analytical methods, inference-based methods, source document study and literature review.
The author explores the hypothesis that social welfare centres in the Łódź Province are reluctant to apply the green public procurement (GPP) approach or use environmental (GPP) criteria to evaluate tenders submitted by economic operators under the public procurement procedure. The study focuses on notices published by social welfare centres from the Łódź Province in the Public Procurement Bulletin from 1 January 2023 to 30 September 2023.
The examination of 20 contract award procedures revealed that environmental aspects were mentioned in 2 tenders. It is noteworthy that both tenders referred to passenger transport services procured by the same social welfare centre. The results of the analysis corroborate the hypothesis that GPP was used to a limited extent. Therefore, public authorities should undertake measures to promote green public procurement as compatible with the concept of sustainable development.

Purpose This paper aims to study the short-term effects of a new procurement policy document on the inclusion of environmental requirements and green award criteria in tenders. The policy document is named “Procurement with Impact” and was released by the Dutch central government to further stimulate Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP). Design/methodology/approach Central government tenders were quantitatively analyzed in the six months prior and after the release of the new policy on their inclusion of environmental concerns. This judgment was made based on the role of environmental concerns in the requirements and the award criteria. As a control group, the same was done on a municipal level, for which the new policy document does not apply. Each of the four samples contained 60 tenders. Data was acquired via the European public procurement database TED. In the analysis, a chi-square test was used to measure whether a significant difference exists between the two periods for each group. Findings Results show that central government has procured in a more environmentally concerned way after the release of “Procurement with Impact.” Within a year, the number of green tenders conducted by central government significantly increased from 30% to 55%. No significant difference was found on a municipal level. Social implications SPP has received increasing attention over the past few decades but has not led to implementation of its principles in most public tenders. As SPP can have a major impact on a more sustainable and social society, it is important to understand how policy can influence the sustainability of tenders. The findings of our study show that “Procurement with impact” had a significant positive short-term effect on the inclusion of green award criteria and requirements in public tenders. Implementing similar SPP policies in other government sectors and other countries could have a substantial effect on the worldwide uptake of SPP. Originality/value “Procurement with Impact” contains a clear sustainable vision embracing the principles of SPP. This government policy takes into account several SPP barriers and drivers and satisfies several policy theory conditions. The authors show in the paper that this policy is an effective instrument for increasing the inclusion of environmental concerns in tenders. As the difference is already significant within a year, this could also reflect the readiness of tenderers to turn to SPP once there is a clear organization wide policy.

Even though automobile manufacturers are striving to address sustainability issues by introducing corporate sustainability practices, there is limited studies related to this issue. This study aims to identify valid and accurate CSP, analyze causal interrelationships between aspects under uncertainty, and propose the criteria for practical implementations. This study proposed six aspects and seventy-three criteria. By employing a Fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), our result confirms 39 criteria out of 79 original criteria. The most important aspects were organizational structure, societal features, technological utilization, actions taken by the government, and innovative ideas. The most significant criteria are assurances of security and auditing, sponsorship of sporting or recreational projects and gifts, support for arts and culture, awards related to social sustainability, internal control mechanisms, environmental management systems, and product environmental impacts. This research contributes to the existing corpus of knowledge by identifying the fundamental CSP characteristics required to facilitate the achievement of sustainable organizational goals, and then identifying the causal interrelationship between those characteristics. In addition, this study offers suggestions for policy makers to focus on governmental initiatives business social consciousness, technological innovation, and sustainable organizational culture in order to enhance CSP.

The source base for quantitative analysis of these themes in social work was: orders of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, thesis materials (theses, reviews of reviewers, official opponents, videos of the theses defence procedure), published on the official websites of higher education institutions, scientific institutions (according to the «Temporary procedure for experimenting to award the degree of Doctor of Philosophy»).

Dissemination of information on the principles of sustainable development implemented in the activities of enterprises and the results of non-financial reporting is usually through the web pages of enterprises. However, this is not the only platform for disseminating such information. Therefore, this article describes the main international platforms that can be used by enterprises. The dynamics of the number of non-financial reports in some European countries and Ukraine is analyzed. Trends and dynamics of the publication of certified non-financial reports in the world and Ukraine are determined. The article summarizes information on major competitions and awards for sustainable development cases and the best non-financial reports. In particular, the results of the selection of the best reports on sustainable development of the CR Reporting Awards 2021 are presented. The article presents the stages of this award, the criteria for selecting non-financial reports and the main nominations. The impact of COVID-19 on non-financial reporting of leading domestic enterprises is analyzed. It has been established that practical social cases related to the pandemic should be identified in the non-financial reporting of enterprises in the following areas: response to COVID-19, support during the pandemic, recovery and sustainability. Information on the results of the impact of COVID-19 on the indicators reflected in the non-financial statements is described. Our paper identifies shifts in the non-financial reporting of enterprises that, due to the pandemic impact, are more focused on social issues such as employee welfare, social welfare, occupational health and safety, and integration and equality. The need to provide reliable information presented in non-financial reporting in a pandemic is objectively justified by the need to increase the demand for social information. During various unforeseen crises, the information interests of stakeholders change. Therefore, to ensure sustainable development, the company needs to provide relevant social information reflected in non-financial statements that will maintain the trust of key stakeholders.

Abstract Ngilngof village is one of the main tourist villages in Manyew Districts of Maluku Province, Indonesia. This is demonstrated by winning the championship award category of the advanced tourism villages in the 2019 National competition. The Development of Village Tourism (DVT) and Community Tourism (CBT) related empowerment needs publicity, with politics an important tool for the development of village management and the development of social and economic benefits and Regional Economic Development (RED). This study aimed to identify a general description of Ngilngof as a tourist village, and study the concept of economic development as a relationship between development and the social welfare and participation of the Ngilngof community. The research method used is a qualitative approach with case study design and interactive model analysis. Research data is measured utilising local economic, social and physical environmental perspectives. The key informants were selected using purposive sampling techniques, including the elements of the Ngilngof village apparatus, community leaders and tourism practitioners. The results showed the criteria for economic development of Ngilngof Tourism Village including attractions, amenities, accessibility and ancillary services have minor impact on the social and economic welfare of Ngilngof Community, however the analysis of RED factors does show a positive impact on rural economic development.

As long as the quality of the companies’ public information is high, it will be able to retain its investors as well as to obtain new ones more easily.Design/methodology/approachThis paper introduces a Multi-Criteria Decision Aid (MCDA) tool with the use of the PROMETHEE II method to formulate an alternative aggregate ESG quality approach. We conduct comparisons in a sectorial and regional based perspective during different exam periods before and after the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), in an attempt to provide a robust framework for corporate disclosure reporting.FindingsThe findings are of particular interest to both scholars and decision-makers, including providers of corporate governance indices and rating agencies. The innovation of this paper lies among others in using the MCDA method with the ESG framework, which proposes a combination of qualitative and quantitative criteria, enabling experienced and/or not experienced analysts to avoid manipulating techniques in business information.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample of companies based on the US and Europe companies incorporating only large-sized ones.Practical implicationsFindings are of particular interest to both scholars and decision-makers including providers of corporate governance indices and rating agencies.Social implicationsBetter understanding features pay key importance for increasing the “quality” information in firms financial statements, especially after the use of IFRS in reporting standards.Originality/valueThe authors proceed to analysis using a multiple perspective use that is decomposed into the following options: (a) Time-period oriented option, (b) Regional-oriented option and (c) Sectoral-oriented option respectively.

Purpose Sustainability has become an important objective for most organizations, as it is emerging as a competitive necessity. This study aims to develop a framework for the identification, categorization and prioritization of sustainable management practices (SMPs) in the hotel sector. Design/methodology/approach An extensive literature review was conducted to identify SMPs in the service sector, and a survey tool was used to categorize and prioritize the most important practices based on expert opinion. An analytical hierarchical process (AHP) was used to prioritize the main criteria and sub-criteria of SMPs. The study is composed of 8 main criteria and 33 sub-criteria relevant to the hotel sector. Findings It is observed that employee management and government management take top priority under the main criteria, and policy requirements, customer culture and education and training were determined to be the three most relevant sub-criteria as SMPs for hotels in UAE. The results indicate that hotels mostly focus on economic sustainability; however, the environmental and social dimensions of sustainability are ignored in management practices. Research limitations/implications The results are derived from four- and five-star hotels and therefore cannot be generalized. In addition, future research on specific categories of hotels is needed in other countries. The current research model can be also applied in different types of companies in tourism and other sectors. Practical implications Hotel managers should exert greater effort with regard to the environmental and social dimensions of sustainability practices, as they are highly important. Internationally, there has been considerable debate with regard to these issues, and at present, customers are well aware of such social and environmental efforts. Originality/value This study offers original insights into the area of SMP in UAE, especially in the hotel sector.

Construction is one of the most important sectors in terms of economic volume and number of employees. It represents approximately 10% of the Gross Domestic Product of the European Union and employs 7% of its total labour force. In a construction project, procurement is employed in many of the stages, so it can constitute an adequate mechanism to integrate sustainability initiatives. Research concerning economic aspects in procurement has always been present in the construction sector, whereas research related to environmental aspects has been gaining attention in the last years. Nevertheless, social aspects are still not very present in the literature on public procurement. The main objective of this research is to analyse the use of social criteria in public tendering processes of public works in the Valencian region of Spain. The results show that Valencian public entities include social criteria for the 11.7% of adjudicated public works. This value is very low when compared with other studies developed in different countries worldwide. Social criteria, just like in other cases, are used more frequently the larger the budget of the project and the longer the execution time. The average weight of social criteria for the tendering process is low (7.0 out of 100), although entities that usually consider these criteria are aware of their importance and give them a higher weight, in global terms.

With the growing awareness of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), increasingly more companies are becoming aware that business cannot be limited to just maximizing stakeholders’ profit. An enterprise should include social responsibility to protect the environment and develop people’s talents. Maintaining business competitive power and sustainability while bringing contributions to society has become the new corporate performance target. In Taiwan, the hi-tech industry is an important economics index. Although some hi-tech companies have executed CSR, many of them have not. The reason is mainly due to not knowing how to begin executing CSR or they do not know the proper strategy. This study used the hi-tech industry as the sample for a Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) to analyze the CSR key factors and strategy. The result confirms that business leaders should start from the “Environment” and focus on “building a green supply chain”, “protecting stakeholders’ rights and interests” and “building enterprise CSR culture” as the strategy to execute CSR.

Today, Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of Socio-Economic Systems exists in micro, meso and macro environments. A complicated process is required to find a rational solution that would include a large number of problems and criteria. Therefore, existing MCDM methods must be used as well as new ones developed. Notwithstanding SEA of Analysis of Socio-Economic Processes, there is little research examining factors of use of MCDM methods; thus, a more in-depth analysis should be undertaken. This study applied a systematic search of literature. A total of 73 papers from the academic literature containing such terms as ‘Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)’, ‘Socio-Economic Processes (SEP)’, ‘Socio-Economic Systems (SES)’, ‘Social Systems (SS)’, ‘Economical Systems (ES)’, ‘Decision-Making (DM)’ and ‘Multi Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM)’ were identified and reviewed. As to the eligibility problem in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), criteria included studies on both Social and Economic Systems & Processes that examined development and trends related to SEA of Socio-Economic Processes. MCDM methods, assessment processes, data extraction and analysis were completed in all relevant studies. General activity fields in Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of Socio-Economic Systems were analysed. The key issues of SEA in micro, meso and macro environment, Socio-Economic Systems and Socio-Economic Processes factors were prominent across all researched categories. As far as the analysis of Socio-Economic Systems & Processes, decision makers should be aware of the problem in its complexity and undertake multi-stage decision-making. To honour the contribution made by Prof Valentinas Podvezko contribution in the field of Decision-Making (DM) to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of Socio-Economic Systems using MCDM methods, and to commemorate his 70th anniversary, this article also highlights his academic career and research.

Social impact investing and social entrepreneurship have great potential for solving global problems. However, practitioners and researchers know little about the entrepreneurial process and the investors’ criteria. Therefore, we identify the determinants of access to external finance for social enterprises in an emerging economy using a quantitative approach in a large sample (N = 601). We found that impact sector, business model, entrepreneurial support, development stage, and the adoption of technologies impact access to finance by social enterprises. We also show that green technologies have greater funding access than other enterprises and that social impact investors are more aware of environmental issues and less concerned with financial returns. To raise more funding, we suggest that social entrepreneurs include environmental issues in their business, quickly validate their idea, add an intermediary company between the enterprise and the consumer, seek the support of incubators or accelerators, and adopt emerging technologies in the product or service offered.

Our criteria for selection include such factors as: whether the study addresses a topic of timely importance in health promotion, the research question is clearly stated and the methodologies used are well executed, whether the paper is often cited and downloaded, whether the study findings offer a unique contribution to the literature, and whether the paper is well written and enjoyable to read. Awardees in 2019 shared study findings that demonstrated the vital role of health policies in affecting behaviors and offered new insights into how to engage voices from communities, how intervention dose and reach impact outcomes, and how to better engage the most difficult to reach.

This research aimed to investigate the impact on profitability that Green Accounting, Environmental Performance, and Disclosure of Corporate Social Responsibility may have. This research examined the relationship between green accounting, environmental performance, CSR disclosure and ROA as a proxy of profitability. The research sample comprised 44 mining and industrial enterprises on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for 2017-2020. The data analysis method used in this study is the panel data regression test. In this study, sample determination was carried out by purposive sampling method, namely sample determination using specific criteria to produce the sample as needed. Based on the model selection test that used the Chow and Hausman tests, it is possible to conclude that the most suitable fixed effect model is utilized in this research. According to the findings, only environmental performance and CSR disclosures were shown to have no substantial influence on the company's profitability. The research showed that investors and companies still had low perceptions of environmental performance and CSR disclosures and did not affect the company's financial performance. It was expected to increase the company's motivation to care more about its environment. In addition, investors were also expected to become more aware of the importance of environmental issues to increase the company's awareness to carry out CSR activities to maximize the positive impact and minimize the negative impact of such activities.

Abstract: Application of the concept of sustainable development requires integration between the micro scale (building), meso scale (building group) and macro scale (city). Since 2008, ASEAN has rewarded hotels in the world that meet environmentally sound hotel standards. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has appreciated and organized the award of the National Green Hotel Award since 2011. This research focuses on identifying and analyzing sustainable design strategies at three hotels in Jakarta and Bali covering efficiency, conservation and management of various elements: land, energy , water, materials, air and indoor health, and environmental management. The analysis used normative architectural criticism approach on the standard study in designing hotel buildings that applied the concept of "green hotel" to the hotel building cases that are considered to meet the criteria. As a result, the hotel's green architecture strategy uses a "green" principle that covers aspects of the cultural, social and economic life cycle; structural design efficiency; energy efficiency; water efficiency; efficiency of building materials; improvement of inner space quality; operational and maintenance optimization; and waste reduction.Keywords: design strategy, sustainable architecture, green hotelAbstrak: Penerapan Konsep Pembangunan Berkelanjutan memerlukan integrasi antara skala mikro (bangunan), skala meso (kelompok bangunan) dan skala makro (kota). The location of tempe processing adjacent to the settlement causes
problems. The resulting liquid waste makes people uncomfortable. This
is presumably because the liquid waste has not been managed properly,
because it is only dumped into the drainage channel. The majority of
tempe industrial entrepreneurs are home industries who are not aware of creating a healthy environment by paying attention to liquid waste
processing. There are many studies on technology for the tempe
industrial wastewater problem, but each technology has advantages and
disadvantages. It is necessary to have a system to choose the technology
that suits the waste conditions. This research takes a case study in
Karanganyar Regency. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method
is a method of determining priority scale that can accommodate all
aspects. Furthermore, a sequence of criteria can be arranged as needed.
The results of the analysis with AHP are: technology criteria 31.09%;
environment 28.65%; economic 21.74% and social 18.53%.
Environmental sub-criteria showed the results of the removal of
ammonia 40.56%; treated water quality 30.74%; the amount of mud is
18.91% and the emission level is 9.80%. Technology sub-criteria are
ease of operation 28.67%; land area requirement 28.56%; service life of
28.05% and the potential of technology in the midification of 14.72%.
Economic sub-criteria with the results of operating costs 34.21%;
installation cost 33.28%; maintenance costs 23.78% and HR costs
8.73%. Social sub-criteria with the results of the need for employment of 49.10%; readiness of human resources 19.33%; implementation of
construction 16.74% and aesthetics 14.82%. The results of the AHP can
be used as input for tempe entrepreneurs, the government and the
community to improve the environmental quality of the tempe industrial wastewater. It is hoped that entrepreneurs will find it easier to determine the appropriate technology to treat the tempe industrial liquid waste.

hGLUTEN is a technological solution capable of detecting gluten and spoiled food. We measured the social impact of the hGLUTEN tool using two Likert scale surveys with two groups: professionals (engineers/chefs) and end-users. These data have been assessed in accordance with the social impact indicators defined for the Key Impact Pathways introduced by the European Commission for Horizon Europe and the criteria of the Social Impact Open Repository (SIOR). A total of 85% of users, 100% of engineers and 68% of professional chefs consider it very relevant to participate and give their opinion in research projects, which shows the increasingly high level of involvement of the general population. A total of 88% of users were unaware of other applications that detect gluten and were more dependent on guidelines provided by allergy associations and expiry dates of foodstuffs. In addition, only 5% of professional chefs said they were aware of other technology capable of detecting gluten in food, which may indicate a large economic market and good commercialisation possibilities for the tool in the future. Finally, the inclusion of tools to motivate users to promote it has been identified as an area for improvement, which could mean that it should be made more visible in the media to increase its impact and influence.

This article considers social reporting as a new phenomenon for Russian companies. The relevance of the topic is determined by the growing interest in environmental and social activities of companies from stakeholders and at the level of government initiatives. Russian business representatives are aware of the importance of presenting non-financial information, but only some of them publish social reporting now. This is due to a lack of understanding of the methodology, the complexity of the quality criteria for the report, and the laborious process of forming. Therefore, questions of existing standards and techniques, as well as the assessment of the report’s impact on the investment attractiveness of the company are particularly important. In this research paper, the trends in the influence of information on potential investors are identified. The authors propose a reporting methodology based on GRI for companies planning to switch to non-financial reporting.

The home should support life activities, normal daily functioning systems and family individuals by providing some degree of control over the physical environment, encouraging social, religious and environmental interaction. Housing design is now heavily influenced by other cultures and does not reflect the lifestyle of the community, especially the Malays. Many previous researchers are aware that multi-storey house architecture is not suitable for Malay culture. Housing recovery is often seen as a reflection of a person's personality, interests, lifestyle, values, and social standing. Studies have shown that traditional Malay house design (RTM) has design principles that solve many problems related to the environment, social and religious nature. Making it a superior design, evergreen with a superior Malay house design style should be used as a guide in the interior design of multi-storey housing. This study examines the concept of RTM, identifying mobile (flexible), open space design planning with the characteristics of various RTM through environmental, social and Islamic perspectives. The results reveal an understanding of the value and design requirements that will influence the interior space planning of Malays living in multi-storey housing and further suggest a framework of thought and design criteria for multi-storey housing space.

Purpose: With the rapid growth of volunteering in worldwide, the question of how to recognize volunteers at the national level to motivate volunteering has become a pressing matter. In a few of developed nations, volunteering is motivated by the establishment of national recognition awards for volunteer. As a result, the goal of this paper is to aid decision-makers in enhancing volunteering by drawing on the experience of these developed countries. Methods: This paper adopts a literature-based approach and presents a comparative analysis of national recognition awards for volunteer in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, and Ireland. The comparison factors include the objectives of awards, categorization criteria, eligibility prerequisites, nomination requirements, and the evaluation process. Following that, an examination of similarities and differences between the awards will be presented, and the article will end with some suggestions. Results: Each of these four countries has established standardized and effective criteria for volunteers’ recognition awards, despite that each country's practices vary to some extent. Based on these circumstances, nations conscious of the importance of volunteer recognition which should expedite the establishment of national recognition awards for volunteers, broaden participation, focus on the effectiveness of service, establish reasonable application standards while ensuring the transparency of the selection process, and actively seek to expand cooperation with other social organizations.

PurposeRisk-based land-use planning is a major tool for reducing risks and enabling communities to design for and mitigate against natural hazard events. Moving towards a risk-based approach to land-use planning involves changes in planning and public communication practice for local government agencies. However, talking to people about how decisions made in the present may increase risk in the future is notoriously hard and requires carefully crafted public discussion. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approachThis paper explores the case of a local government planning agency (the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BOPRC)) who adopted a risk-based approach to the development of their regional policy statement (RPS). The BOPRC designed an innovative approach to talking to their communities about future land use and acceptable risk based on a framework and toolkit of resources (the RBPA – risk-based planning approach).FindingsThe process addressed several common challenges of risk engagement for land-use planning as it: integrated input from policy and planning professionals, technical experts and community development specialists across local government organisations; used locally relevant community sessions that developed participants’ understanding of risk; linked ideas about risk tolerance to potential policy implications for local government; and built capacity amongst participants for judgment about risk acceptability and options for safeguard.Research limitations/implicationsThe process met public engagement planning criteria for robustness, i.e., valid process design and interpretation of feedback, and transparent integration into the final decisions. It enabled public views on natural hazards to be evaluated alongside technical input and incorporated into final decisions on thresholds for acceptable and unacceptable risk.Originality/valueThe approach taken has made significant contribution to risk engagement and land-use planning practice in New Zealand. In 2017, the BOPRC risk-based approach to their RPS received a national award from the New Zealand Planning Institute for contribution to advancing best practice. In 2018, it received further recognition through the Commonwealth Association of Planners Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Commonwealth.

Purpose This practice-based research funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) focuses on the translation of evidence-based practices and policies into real-world applications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest study to research the implementation process for lactation accommodations and policies for work sites. Design or Approach Pre-/post-test evaluation of work-site lactation accommodations, and 6-month follow-up with business that worked on the project. Setting/Participants 34 businesses across New Hampshire. Method The team developed work-site selection criteria to award mini-grants; developed trainings and a toolkit; and worked with 34 businesses over a 3-year period. Pre-/post-implementation data were collected using the CDC work-site scorecard. A 6-month follow-up phone interview was conducted with each site. Results We assessed the CDC scorecard and evaluated the challenges of implementing lactation spaces by industry. In our 6-month follow-up, we found that spaces were still being utilized and we identified specific research to inform practical evidence-based applications and lessons learned when implementing a work-site lactation space. Conclusion We successfully provided financial/technical support to develop or improve 45 lactation spaces, with policies and practices to support mothers and families for 34 businesses. We identified key takeaway lessons that can be used to guide the development of lactation spaces and policies in work sites. Sites self-report that these work-site changes were sustainable at 6-month follow-up.

In architecture, Venustas (aesthetics) is always considered an important attribute along with Firmitas (firmness) and Utilitas (usefulness). Pursuing aesthetics/ beauty is one of the architect’s primary roles. However, it is critical to comprehend ‘What is aesthetics?’ and its implications for the built-unbuilt environment and human beings. In a world where everything is changing, are the definitions, concepts, and parameters of aesthetics consistent? Is it subject to change over time? If so, should architectural students and professionals be aware of it and trained in it? This study aims to critically assess and analyse the dynamic aspects of aesthetics from 3300 BCE to present and establish the ‘best fit’ definition of aesthetics in architecture. The methodology used for the study is a mixed-method approach, a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature to investigate the origin of aesthetics and aesthetics in philosophy, environmental psychology and architecture. The aspects, criteria and sub-criteria identified from the analysis. The consensus is taken from expert interviews and a questionnaire survey (n=72). Findings reveal that aesthetics in architecture is dynamic/ ever-changing. It has nine contributing aspects that make aesthetics a performing aesthetics that emphasises the enhanced worth and value for money invested. These nine aspects are spatial organisation, functional efficiency, social, psychological, environmental, maintenance, sustainability, technology, and economics.

The goal of the present document review was to analyze and propose alignment of the criteria regarding practical and legal measures to mitigate light pollution, a phenomenon which affects health, quality of life, healthy and balanced environments, spatial rights, and biodiversity. Excessive lighting is a common phenomenon in cities and towns, becoming an environmental problem which must be reviewed and analyzed. This problem represents the situation faced by the global population, and is manifested in scientific studies. These diverse studies and results suggest that socio-legal criteria must be aligned to mitigate the social phenomenon of light pollution, which is exacerbated by a lack of consciousness in the population, together with creating prevention and control policies in line with international standards and the UNESCO 2030 SDGs. We also recommend reaching agreements between various key fields (science, politics, education, economy, business and society) to make inhabitants take responsibility for the existence of this phenomenon, in order to make the public aware that this phenomenon exists.

Studies on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) index have become increasingly important since the ESG index offers attractive characteristics, such as environmental friendliness. Scholars and institutional investors are evaluating if investment in the ESG index can positively change current portfolios. It is crucial that institutional investors seek related assets to diversify their investments when such investors create funds in the renewable energy sector, which is highly related to environmental issues. The ESG index has proven to be a good investment choice, but we are not aware of its performance when combined with renewable energy securities. To uncover this nature, we investigate the dependence structure of the ESG index and four renewable energy indices with constant and time-varying copula models and evaluate the potential performance of using different ratios of the ESG index in the portfolio. Criteria such as risk-adjusted return, standard deviation, and conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) show that the ESG index can provide satisfactory results in lowering the potential CVaR and maintaining a high return. A goodness-of-fit test is then used to ensure the results obtained from the copula models.

In order to develop nurses’ identities properly, they need to publicise their professional competences and make society aware of them. For that, this study was conducted to describe the competences that society currently attributes to nursing professionals and how nursing is valued in society. This review was based on the conceptual framework by Whittemore and Knafl. The literature search was conducted using PubMed, WOS, and CINAHL databases, and the search strategy was based on a combination of natural language and standardised keywords, with limits and criteria for inclusion, exclusion, and quality. The results of the studies were classified and coded in accordance with the competence groups of the professional profile described in the Tuning Educational Structures in Europe programme. Fourteen studies were selected. The most commonly reported competence groups were as follows: nursing practice and clinical decision making; and communication and interpersonal competences. Nursing is perceived as a healthcare profession dedicated to caring for individuals. Its other areas of competence and its capacity for leadership are not well known. In order to develop a professional identity, it is essential to raise awareness of the competences that make up this professional profile.

Objectives. To quantify and describe the incidence of misinformation about breast cancer on the social media platform Pinterest, a leading source of women’s health (e.g., breast cancer) information. Methods. We performed a hand-coded content analysis on 797 Pinterest posts (“pins”) mentioning the terms “breast cancer” or “breast” and “cancer,” collected in November 2018. Results. From the original sample of 797, 178 (22.3%) made a factual claim about what social media users could do to prevent or treat breast cancer. Of these, more than half—91 (51.1%)—contained misinformation. Therefore, 11.4% of the sample overall contained misinformation related to breast cancer prevention or treatment. Conclusions. Pinterest is a significant vector of misinformation about breast cancer, especially given the platform’s overwhelmingly female composition and its visual means of conveying information. Public Health Implications. Health practitioners should be aware of the myths circulating about breast cancer prevention and treatment and be prepared both to dismantle misinformation and to stress reliable health guidance. Meanwhile, Pinterest may wish to widen the criteria it uses for identifying health misinformation on its platform.

The object of the study is the decision-making modeling in the context of medical social media to increase the clinics’ effectiveness. The problem is to classify the patient reviews collected in the patient-clinic segment of the medical social media and to identify the situation related to the clinics’ activity by revealing the criteria characterizing the clinics’ activity out of the opinions. The proposed technique refers to lexicon-based sentiment analysis of opinions, the classification based on Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner (VADER), the verification of the results accuracy with Multinomial Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machine, the manual sentiment analysis of opinions to detect criteria and the classification of opinions according to each criterion. Using this technique, out of 442587 patient reviews obtained from database cms_hospital_satisfaction_2020 of the Kaggle company generated on the basis of crowdsourcing of patient reviews on medical social media, 218914 patient reviews are classified as positive, 190360 – as neutral, and 33313 – as negative. The results accuracy is verified, and the clinics are rated by the «positive» opinions. 6 new criteria characterizing the clinics’ activity are discovered, and the identification of the situation related to the clinics’ activity based on the comparison of «positive» and «negative» opinions according to each criterion is presented. The possibility of using the results obtained from the identification to increase the clinics’ efficiency in making decisions is shown. The results obtained in this study can be used to improve the clinics’ performance according to public opinion. This opportunity involves the crowdsourcing of opinions about the clinic in the medical social media environment and the collection of opinions in a structured way.

Based on predetermined criteria obtained 11 companies. The type of data used is secondary data obtained from the Indonesia Stock Exchange website. The analytical method used is panel data logistic regression analysis. This paper provides an empirical view of how environmental factors greatly affect the company's performance. This shows that the increase in good company performance generally comes from companies that pay attention to corporate social responsibility, so that they can have an advantage in competition in the market. Based on the research approach method used, this is a weakness of this study because this research cannot be generalized. It is hoped that future researchers will be able to explore the proportions of other variables that can be used in further research. These results support the legitimacy theory; one of the arguments (O’Donovan 2002) states that in the view of legitimacy, the relationship between profitability and the level of social performance is when the company has a high level of profit, the company considers it unnecessary to report things that can interfere with information. Consumers who are increasingly aware of environmental issues will look for environmentally friendly products. As a follow-up impact, the company will look for suppliers who can solve ecological problems; this will affect increasing the selling power of products or services and can improve the company's economic performance. Objective: To identify the incidence, factors, and consequences of psychoactive substances use among medical students. Methods: Systematic review in MEDLINE-PUBMED, BIREME, GOOGLE SCHOLAR, and SCIELO. The inclusion criteria were observational articles from the last five years, medical students’ population, reporting incidence, factors, or consequences. The exclusion criteria were articles before 2018, repeated, reviews, or academic teaching articles. The selection criteria were: 1. Descriptors and date. 2. Title citing medical students. 3. Not repeated articles. 4. Observational study, containing incidence and/or factors for and/or consequences. 5. Objective data matching the objective of this review. The selection process was conducted by the PRISMA statements. Results: A total of 24 articles were included. This review observed a high incidence of alcohol use, growing and high rates of cannabis use, especially in Brazil, low and growing tax of cocaine and crack use, frequent use of nonprescribed stimulants, and high incidence with new forms of tobacco use. Factors for using can be classified as fun, socialization, stress, anxiety, depression, and academic performance. Concomitant use of two or more substances is commonly reported. The consequences of this behavior were health, financial, legal, social, familial, and academic issues. Factors and consequences differed according to the type of substance. Conclusion: There is a high incidence, different factors and consequences, and cumulative use of psychoactive substances by medical students. Professors and institutions need a more comprehensive approach to this theme. Students need to be aware of the risks.

ABSTRACTObjective:Disaster-related research funding in the United States has not been described. This study characterizes Federal funding for disaster-related research for 5 professional disciplines: medicine, public health, social science, engineering, emergency management.Methods:An online key word search was performed using the website, www.USAspending.gov, to identify federal awards, grants, and contracts during 2011–2016. A panel of experts then reviewed each entry for inclusion.Results:The search identified 9145 entries, of which 262 (3%) met inclusion criteria. Over 6 years, the Federal Government awarded US $69 325 130 for all disaster-related research. Total funding levels quadrupled in the first 3 years and then halved in the last 3 years. Half of the funding was for engineering, 3 times higher than social sciences and emergency management and 5 times higher than public health and medicine. Ten (11%) institutions received 52% of all funding. The search returned entries for only 12 of the 35 pre-identified disaster-related capabilities; 6 of 12 capabilities appear to have received no funding for at least 2 years.Conclusion:US federal funding for disaster-related research is limited and highly variable during 2011–2016. There are no clear reasons for apportionment. There appears to be an absence of prioritization. There does not appear to be a strategy for alignment of research with national disaster policies.

In today’s world, corporate sustainability is a key part of a company’s vision and policy. It helps them gain a competitive edge by issuing sustainability reports based on various criteria and metrics. Therefore, the aim of this research was to examine how GHRM (Green Human Resource Management) & CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) practices affect sustainable performance in the service sector during covid-19 through Organizational Culture. The population of this study was individuals working on any hospital with a total sample of 550 employees. Quantitative Data was collected using questionnaire and SPSS and Smart PLS-SEM was used to analyze the results. The results of this study showed that GHRM and CSR practices had a significant positive effect on sustainable performance, results of this study were also showing organizational culture has a significant mediating impact in GHRM & CSR practices and sustainable performance. Therefore, it is suggested that organizations must implement CSR and GHRM strategies to protect the expertise of their employees. The recruitment and selection policies of an HR department should be based on the identification of the environmental knowledge of candidates. Training programmes for environmental protection must be established. This will assist workers to embrace green manufacturing methods that are designed to meet the needs of environmentally aware consumers.

In a follow-up to our 2021 scoping review of the quantitative literature on the impacts of economic recessions on mental health, this scoping review summarizes qualitative research to develop a descriptive understanding of the key factors that transmute the socioeconomic stressors of a recession into poorer mental health. The previous study identified 22 qualitative studies from 2008 to 2020, which were updated with search results from six databases for articles published between 2020 and 2021. After inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to the total 335 identified studies, 13 articles were included. These were peer-reviewed, qualitative studies in developed economies, published from 2008 to 2021, and available online in English. Participants perceived that financial hardship and unemployment during recessions increased stress and led to feelings of shame, loss of structure and identity, and a perceived lack of control, which increased interpersonal conflict, social isolation, maladaptive coping, depression, self-harm, and suicidal behavior. Participants struggled with accessing health and social services and suggested reforms to improve the navigation and efficiency of services and to reduce the perceived harms of austerity measures. Providers should screen for mental distress and familiarize themselves with health and social resources in their community to help patients navigate these complex systems. Policy makers should be aware of the potential protective nature of unemployment safeguards and consider other low-cost measures to bolster mental health supports and informal social networks. Research in this area was limited. Further research would be beneficial given the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 recession.

Implicit measures of attitudes provide an assessment of attitudes that respondents are unwilling to express or might not be aware of. This paper presents a systematic review of scientific literature in the field of measuring implicit attitudes, in which the current state and position of this construct are reviewed with the aim of assessing the meeting of scientific methodological criteria of knowledge acquisition. Empirical materials were obtained in February 2023 through the following search engines and platforms: Google, Google Scholar, SAGE, APA PsycNet, EBSCO, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate and JSTOR. Inclusion criteria: a paper published in a scientific journal, in English, available in its entirety in electronic form, in the field of psychology/social sciences, published from 2000 to the date of the search. In most reviewed sources, the Implicit Association Test (IAT) instrument was used, so this was added as an inclusion criterion. The final number of studies for analysis was 22 – five review papers and 17 research papers, mostly experimental studies. The papers were published in scientific journals with a high impact factor, written in the IMRAD format, the methods used were adequately presented, systematically controlled research procedures and appropriate statistical techniques were used, the conclusions were based on data, and the critical attitude of the researchers is present. The metric characteristics of the instruments are generally at an acceptable level – adequate internal consistency reliability, convergent and internal validity, predictive ability, but there are problems in the domain of construct and ecological validity.

Autism is marked by a dense shortage of social, language, and cognitive abilities. To become aware and start earlier treatment, these criteria needed to be known from their cultural context, helpful for the betterment of children with autism and their caregivers. The study aimed to explore the severity of six clinical features (e.g., socio-emotional, language, behavioral, affective, cognitive, and physical symptoms) of Bangladeshi children with autism according to the DSM-V. Thirty six parents (55.56% mother and mean age = 33.75 years) of autistic children participated as respondents. Required data were collected using a personal information form and the Bangla version of the Clinical Features of Autistic Children Questionnaire. Data were analyzed through frequency, percentage, and correlation. The results showed that the severity of social and physical developmental symptoms was comparatively lower, while language, behavioral, affective, and cognitive developmental symptoms were comparatively higher among children with autism. In addition, no significant correlation was found among socio-emotional, language, behavioral, affective, cognitive, and physical symptoms in terms of parents’ educational qualifications and family income of children with autism. The study recommends that the concerned authorities should immediately focus on the more severe clinical features and affecting factors for the betterment of both children with autism and their caregivers. Circular economy (CE) principles have gained prominence in the fashion industry since it is a highly polluting industry and requires sustainable changes. Even though there are several CE initiatives already in place within the fashion production chain, changes towards CE are still slow. This study seeks to identify the drivers, barriers, and practices that influence implementing circular economy concepts in the fashion industry production chain using a systematic literature review. The results show that some more barriers and criteria keep consumers away from circular fashion concepts than drivers. These barriers include fast fashion consumer culture, even though more consumers are environmentally conscious. This is because awareness has not reached large-scale populations, despite the world being more aware of social and environmental issues. Consumers still do not see ethical and ecological problems associated with the fashion industry and continue to be targeted for large fast fashion retailers that sell a misguided version of consumerism. This study contributes to both academia and new fashion business models that seek to become more sustainable since it presents opportunities for investments and the obstacles that must be overcome for reaching CE within this sector.

Objectives This study developed disability-awareness instruction embedded in cultural diversity curriculum and analyzed its effects on the disability awareness and attitudes of elementary-school students. Methods The teacher-initiated team for curriculum development developed the curriculum based on the 5-step of ADDIE model. The three core areas of curriculum were identified as identity and diversity, human rights and equality, and respect and coexistence and then developed instructional activities, materials, and evaluation criteria. During 6 months through two semesters the curriculum were provided for elementary-school students in the 5th-grade inclusive class. Results The paired sample t-test proved that the students’ positive awareness and attitudes in the personal and social areas were significantly improved. Based on the analysis of the students’ reflection notes, they understood that it was important to respect diverse cultures and to protect human rights. Also, they became aware of students with disabilities as an equal being. Conclusions Based on these results. the significance of this study and suggestions for future study were discussed.

Aware that the intensity of human activity is increasing the pressure on the environment, either by uncontrolled consumption of resources and space, either by producing waste that nature can not absorb without suffering, prompted the international community to move to initiate and support concrete actions to prevent, counteract and eliminate disturbing factors repercussions of ecological balance. Environmental issues can be made from multiple angles: legal, institutional, economic, technological, etc. This paper aims to address environmental responsibility that should be considered permanent so all economic agents and civil society. This scientific communication includes the results of extensive fundamental research on environmental protection, based on the study of numerous bibliographic sources printed and on-line. Also been studied and reports from international events made ​​this topic, and studies published by international institutions. Ensuring a balance between economic growth and environmental protection in order to meet social development and perspectives, is the new concept, under which the governments of many countries rethink their economic strategies, concept called sustainable development and first presented in 1987 in Brundtland Report - "Our Common Future". Abstract Introduction African Americans are disproportionately affected by environmental factors that increase the risk for negative health outcomes. Analyses from National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data estimated 15 to 75 percent of the disparities between Black and White respondents being accounted for by residential context. Poor sleep health, particularly short sleep duration, has been linked to metabolic and cardiovascular disease. A population study indicated that sleep duration of less than 6 hours was more common among African Americans compared with other racial groups in the United States and this association was accounted for by African Americans living in high density urban environments. Threats of violence may engender feelings of vulnerability when sleeping and be an important determinant of sleep health though this relationship has not been adequately studied. The aim of this study is to determine how an individual’s sleep health relates to violent crime rates in their neighborhood of residence as well as indicators of neighborhood stress endorsed in a self-reported survey. Methods African- American men and women between the ages of 18-35 filled out the insomnia severity index (ISI) and city stress inventory (CSI). Sleep duration and sleep efficiency were obtained through home-based actigraphy. Participants were categorized as poor sleepers if two out of three criteria were met: sleep duration of less than six hours, ISI greater than 10, and sleep efficiency below 85%. Participants addresses were linked to one of the 51 proximal neighborhood groups (PNG) defined by the DC Department of Health and Office of Planning using MAR geocoder and QGIS mapping software. Violent death rates and other social health determinants are indicated by PNG in the DC DOH’s Health Equity Report (2019). Results Sleep measures were not correlated with neighborhood violent death rates (Pearson r’s: .05 - .17; all NS). SE and TST were weakly correlated with CSI scores (both r’s = -.22, NS). Conclusion The negative findings may be related to sample size, the presence of threat and crime in all of the locations, and the importance of individual coping. This article examines the adaptive capacities of real estate firms in New York City in light of the increased risks of urban flooding. This exploratory research attempts to shed light on how and why firms of varying risk profiles are strategically adapting to these risks – if at all. Through the lens of a qualitative multi-criteria adaptive capacity framework, the results of six case studies are analyzed to identify what influences are shaping the actions and strategies of firms. The article examines the propositions that: (A) firms with observable strategies have undertaken ex post strategies which are principally driven by the firms’ financial bottom line; (B) firm strategies attribute little to no influence in their decisions to external or delayed costs and/or impacts relating to social and environmental influences; and, (C) firms with the comparatively most robust adaptive capacities will be those who: (i) are most aware of their vulnerabilities; and (ii) are themselves comparatively more vulnerable to the immediate risks associated with urban flooding. While the evidence largely supports the propositions, the results of this research can help shape the development of intelligence and strategic units within firms as they develop a capacity to adapt to ever changing conditions.

Greenwashing presents a significant risk to sustainable financing, prompting researchers to investigate its impact on investors. In response to the urgency of combating this deceptive practice, financial market regulators have increasingly adopted ESG (environmental, social, governance) criteria. This study aims to comprehensively understand the effects of greenwashing by employing a mixed-method approach. Initially, a survey was conducted among participants to analyze their perspectives. The findings reveal a prevailing trend among individuals who seek to optimize investment returns, with a remarkable 50% of respondents demonstrating familiarity with greenwashing tactics. Notably, upon becoming aware of greenwashing practices, a substantial proportion of participants express a strong inclination to revise their investment strategies accordingly. Further exploration into the phenomenon uncovers a combination of factors contributing to greenwashing, including ambiguous legislation, stakeholder pressures, organizational qualities, and individual mindsets. Respondents emphasize the critical importance of enhanced transparency, a heightened emphasis on quality standards, and the enforcement of stringent regulations as key measures to mitigate the prevalence of greenwashing. This study sheds light on investors' sentiments regarding greenwashing, providing valuable insights into the impacts of this unethical practice on sustainable financing. Additionally, it offers practical recommendations to effectively combat greenwashing. By implementing suggested measures such as promoting transparency, prioritizing quality, and enforcing robust regulations.

In this increasingly advanced era, sukuk has experienced more innovative developments with the emergence of interesting ideas in the form of green sukuk or green bonds. The issue of sustainability is being discussed more frequently due to its positive impact on the environment and future livelihoods. However, there are still individuals who are not fully aware of the importance of this concept, which can pose a serious threat to future survival. Therefore, the momentum of the sustainability movement should receive attention from the entire society, gradually understanding and implementing the concept of "sustainability" in every development action, both in environmental and social contexts. Thus, green sukuk instruments provide various benefits, including contributing to environmental preservation and indirectly involving the community in active and tangible national development. The objective of this research is to determine the extent of the role of green sukuk in sustainable national development. This research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze relevant literature data. The data sources that will be used include various academic literature, reports from relevant financial institutions and government agencies, as well as related publications from international organizations. Data analysis is conducted by identifying and analyzing the main themes that emerge from the relevant literature. Green Sukuk is an Islamic bond instrument that combines Sharia principles with green projects to finance efforts in climate change mitigation, climate adaptation, and biodiversity conservation. The issuance of Green Sukuk involves an issuer who issues debt certificates to investors, with the funds obtained specifically allocated to projects that meet green criteria. The funded projects encompass renewable energy sectors, energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, waste management, reforestation, as well as climate change mitigation and environmental conservation efforts. Green Sukuk offers benefits to the issuer in terms of obtaining funds from investors interested in sustainable investments, while investors can invest in projects that have a positive impact on the environment and society. The Indonesian government has supported the development of Green Sukuk as part of their commitment to sustainable development, attracting high interest from both domestic and international investors.

Male infertility presents a public health concern. As most men wish to become fathers, it is important to increase men’s awareness of infertility risk factors. We developed a mobile health application (mHealth app), Infotility XY, to promote men’s reproductive health. This study evaluates whether use of the app led to increased knowledge of infertility risk factors, and whether knowledge change was associated with participants’ sociodemographic characteristics and/or app usage. Participants were recruited between August and October 2020. Eligibility criteria included: identified as male; 18–45 years old; childless; no infertility history; able to read and write in English/French; had internet access. We assessed participants’ fertility knowledge before and after app use. App usage data were captured during the 2-week intervention period. Our sample included 49 men aged 18–45. Seventy-eight percent of participants had not previously sought fertility information. Participants viewed on average 75% of the app’s articles, and 96% of participants said the app increased their fertility knowledge. Before app use, 55% of men said they were aware of infertility risk factors, compared to 96% after app use. Men correctly identified more risk factors after app use compared to before, t(48) = 8.28, p < .001. Participants’ sociodemographic characteristics and amount of app usage were not associated with knowledge change. This study provides evidence of the feasibility of an mHealth app to improve men’s awareness of infertility risk factors. Given the positive relationship between male reproductive health and overall health, increased awareness of infertility risk factors may lead to men’s improved overall health.

Strength recommendations have been embedded within the UK’s Chief Medical Officers’ physical activity guidelines since 2011. In 2019, they were given a more prominent position in the accompanying infographic. However, there is limited evidence that these recommendations have been successful in their population-wide dissemination. This study aimed to explore the engagement of community-dwelling older adults with the guidelines to date and to gain a nuanced understanding of the awareness, knowledge, and action that older adults take to fulfil strength recommendations. A total of fifteen older adults living in the UK participated in one online interview. A general inductive approach was used to generate themes from the data. There were four major themes that were found. 1. The strength component of the physical activity guidelines, 2. Barriers, 3. Motivators, and 4. Solutions. No participants were aware of the strength guidelines. When they were asked what activities they used to fulfil the ‘build strength on at least two-days-per-week′ criteria, walking, yoga, and Pilates were the most common responses. Ageism and strength training misconceptions were major barriers to participation in strengthening exercise. Older adults were much less aware of the benefits of building strength and strength training participation when compared to aerobic activities, so motivators to participation were generally not specific to strength training. Finally, there are several ways that practitioners can overcome the barriers to strength training participation. Solutions to improving the uptake and adherence to strength training participation are likely to be more successful when they include opportunities for social interaction, ability-appropriate challenge, and provide both short- and long-term benefits.

Health among elderly is an important dimension of quality of life. Health is the outcome of interaction of genetic and environmental factors. In elderly, it is the result of a complex interaction of the physical, social, and psychological aspects of ageing. Health status in this paper has been looked at from the point of view of incidence of diseases, functional ability, nutritional status, and elderly’s self-assessment of health condition. Data for the study have been collected from 20 villages in Morigaon district of Assam, predominantly inhabited by the Karbi community. Sixty years and above have been taken as the inclusive criterion. The sample consists of 508 elderly male and female Karbis. It is cross-sectional study using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data have been collected with a structured schedule and nutritional status assessed from body mass index. Majority of the elderly did not reportedly suffer from any disease. A look into the treatment and management of disease conditions indicates that the elderly persons are mostly not aware of any disease prevalence due to their ignorance. The elderly remain functionally active and this is mainly their criteria of defining health. Of the elderly, 30 percent show low body mass index indicating protein deficiency malnutrition. Self-assessment of health condition as good by most elderly indicates a better psychological health. Functional ability, nutritional status, and self-assessment show an association with age.
