Повний текст джерелаOur research focuses on “spontaneous urban beaches” in non-seaside towns, i.e., contemporary public spaces in which citizens behave in a way usually reserved for the beach, in places that are not a priori adapted to this end. Indeed, in a context where entertainment and idleness are playing a growing role in citizens’ life, certain places, due to their ambiance or their spatial and sensitive characteristics, invite them to pause. They become privileged spaces for the relaxation and uncovering of bodies in copresence.These unexpected beach situations appear in certain contemporary urban public spaces, often near water, and they allow citizens to relax and expose their bodies to the sun, the ground, the wind and others in places that have not been planned to this end. Such situations are little studied. This thesis work deals with the phenomenon of spontaneous urban beaches taking place in urban areas. This research aims to understand the way architecture apprehends the need to experience a change of scenery in the city by perceiving the spatial and ambient conditions surrounding the existence of these situations.We will also identify the temporal, sociocultural and sensitive conditions that define them

Повний текст джерелаTibau do Sul is a coastal municipality in the northeast of Brazil, known for its spectacular beaches and famous seaside resort, Praia da Pipa. As it is located in a sugar cane plantation area, the local aristocracy has visited it for holiday vacations since the beginning of the 20th century. However, tourism eventually started developing in the 1970s and 1980s with the arrival of young surfers, attracted by its surf spots, its beautiful landscape and its “authentic” native people. At that time, the subversive attitude of these young travelers - inspired by the Brazilian counterculture - contrasts with the traditional elite vacationers’ paternalism. For the native population, the irruption of tourism opens up a new field of economic, social and political opportunities. It coincides with a series of simultaneous transformations: the decline of sugar cane plantations, the modernization of fishing, the development of public institutions. This conjunction of factors fosters the emergence of a small, politically involved native bourgeoisie, able to negotiate with the foreigners brought by tourism. As tourism grows internationally, new actors start settling in the village: tourism entrepreneurs, real estate agents, international investors, immigrant workers, second-home owners, environmentalists, public administrations, etc. This inflow of people entangles a un-precedented situation formed with culturally and socially very heterogeneous groups. This conflictive though creative setting generates much friction which as manifests itself through land and environmental struggles, cultural events, local media and politics. To address such a situation, this ethnographic study attempts to unravel the ambivalence of the tourism phenomenon by questioning the reductive visions depicting tourism as a form of “neo-colonialism” or as “miracle recipe” for development. Following Georges Balandier’s analysis of the “colonial situation” (1951), the tourism situation is defined as a social setting based on the interdependency between the actors, which is always historically determined but never taken for granted. In the case of Tibau do Sul, the study reveals the strong influence of the social and land tenure structures - inherited from the former modes of production (sugar cane plantations, peasantry, and fishing) - on the tourism trajectory of the coastal communities

This thesis presents work focused on the creation of a sociable space for communication online. Sociable communication requires the ability to converse with others using simple and meaningful mechanisms, supporting flexibility and expressiveness. Equally important is the ability for people to read the space they inhabit and make sense of it in socially significant ways, such as people watching to observe others' interests and interaction styles. A third key to sociable communication is emphasis on identity and embodiment, giving participants a strong sense of themselves and others through their online representations. These issues are approached through research in areas ranging from sociology to urban architecture, directed at finding bases for the design of capabilities that are useful and engaging in the context of computer support for distributed multiparty communication. The result of this research is Talking in Circles, a graphical audio conferencing environment that employs abstract graphics for representation and provides lightweight access to multiple expressive modes. This thesis discusses foundations for work towards sociable communication online as well as the design and implementation processes involved in the creation of the Talking in Circles system. User experiences with the system, lessons learned and directions for further research into sociable communication are then detailed.

Повний текст джерелаDThe research works presented in this thesis relate to analysis, design, development and evaluation of text input methods for small screen, usable in various interaction situations and for different user profiles. Firstly, we proposed a new gestural interaction based method taking into account gesture planning, message encoding strategy and underlying linguistic codes. As part of design for all, we adapted our proposal for people with motor disabilities. Secondly, we proposed two techniques for an optimized text entry with interface based keys in order to improve key selection. One corresponds to "linguistic zoom" offering the keys likely to be selected at the next entry. The second solution is a "semantic zoom" taking into account the cursor position of pointing device, the space layer and the content layer of entry interface based keys. We finally proposed an interaction technique, outside the scope of conventional GUIs. This solution is to augment the interaction interface by third dimension, allowing to reduce the distance travelled by pointing device and to increase target size at the same time

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis questions the role of mobility and how teenagers placed in institutional foster care move around, through a research conducted in four social care facilities (Maisons d’Enfants à Caractère Social). Within the French child protection system (Aide Sociale à l’Enfance and Protection Judiciaire de la Jeunesse), this form of placement means that a minor is taken care of outside of her/his family home during a given period of time. This type of social care presents a significant spatial dimension, both in its objectives and ways of implementation. It is indeed based on two principles: it seeks to manage both distance and proximity to familiar spaces on the one hand, and the discontinuity and continuity between the inside and the outside of the facility on the other hand. Within this context, how teenagers move around and their mobility play a three-layered role. First, for the teenagers themselves: the foster care facility is their space of residence, and moving around makes it possible for them to deal with multiple spaces of belonging. Second, for the social workers: the facility is their working space, and they use mobility as a means to both handle relationships between themselves and the teenagers, and adjust the number of teenagers they work with based on group dynamics and other parameters. Third, at an institutional level: whether it is chosen or coerced, mobility allows the regulation between different norm systems but is not perceived as being valuable in and of itself

Повний текст джерелаPlace-based environmental education provides myriad physical, cognitive, social, and emotional benefits. In this study, 13 environmental educators illuminated how policy, partnerships and place shaped environmental education in pre-K–12 schools in Washington, DC. I recruited participants from the local government, nongovernmental organizations, and three public and public charter schools. Place studies and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory influenced the design of this instrumental case study. Data sources included interviews, analyses of policy documents, and observations of participants and teaching settings. Analytic memos and coding using NVivo supported data analysis. Data representation included using narratives to center participants’ voices.
Participants described iteratively expanding place-based environmental education for DC students by (a) influencing and enacting policies that promote interdisciplinary engagement with the environment, (b) expanding partnerships between non-formal and formal educators, (c) enriching students’ sense of place, and (d) promoting students’ mental and physical wellbeing alongside their academic achievement.
In DC, interconnected local, regional, and national policies, standards, and initiatives served as catalysts for new funding, opportunities, and partnerships. Among the most relevant were the local DC Healthy Schools Act of 2010, the regional Chesapeake Bay Agreement of 2014, and the national Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS); collectively, these documents addressed wellness, environmental protection, and science education – all areas relevant to environmental education.
Multi-institutional partnerships addressed policy goals and enabled teachers to access a) professional development, b) curriculum materials, and c) place-based experiences for students in gardens and on waterways. Through a DC government-funded project, non-formal educators and mentor teachers created an environmental literacy framework that aligned existing environmental education activities with NGSS. Non-formal educators collaboratively led waterway-based fieldtrips that addressed regional efforts to protect the Chesapeake Bay.
Structured environmental education activities on waterways and in gardens engaged students, inspired educators, and provided links across disciplines, locations, and past experiences. Non-formal educators provided direct instruction, encouraged student inquiry, and fostered relationships with place. By contrast, few educators utilize the school building for environmental education. My findings suggest that expanding place-based environmental education requires engaging diverse stakeholders, including school custodians and others who have not traditionally been consulted as experts.

Повний текст джерелаWork related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affecting the low back do represent one of the most pressing health problems and a major issue among workers in Europe including vineyard workers. It is noteworthy that the negative effects at the individual, employer and societal levels make the prevention of WMSDs affecting the low back a priority target in the viticulture sector. Within this context, the aim of this PhD thesis was to build an effective action to prevent WMSD symptoms of the low back among vineyard-workers.A field ergonomic work exposure analysis was first conducted (i) to question the location and severity of WMSD symptoms and (ii) to objectively quantify the kinematics during pruning activity. Of note, this winter activity was chosen because it represents six months of the annual physical workload. To reach this first sub-objective, two complementary studies were conducted (Studies I and II). In Study I, self-reported musculoskeletal pain ratings confirmed the existing literature that the low back was the most painful anatomical region among vineyard-workers. In addition, two-dimensional video-recordings of pruning activity revealed that vineyard-workers frequently adopt trunk forward bending postures considered as ‘extreme’. In Study II, the use of wireless tri-dimensional inertial sensors further demonstrated that pruning activity was also associated with trunk postures combining forward bending and rotation. On the whole, these two field studies indicated that vineyard-workers adopted trunk postures known to increase the risk of WMSD symptoms over the low back during the performance of pruning activity.Based on these findings, a workplace supervised APA program was subsequently conceived, implemented and evaluated to specifically prevent WDMS symptoms of the low back among vineyard-workers. The APA program was supplementary to classical ergonomic interventions. To achieve this second objective, two complementary studies (Studies III and IV) were conducted in which volunteer vineyard-workers were invited to follow supervised warm-ups and training APA sessions targeting trunk muscle endurance and flexibility, known to decrease in case of WMSD symptoms over the low back. Results of Study III showed the effectiveness of this workplace supervised APA program to increase trunk muscle endurance and flexibility and to decrease pressure pain sensitivity over the low back, hence demonstrating the positive effects of APA on pain mechanisms. Results of Study IV further provided a comprehensive view on how and to what extent the context of the implementation of the APA program and the collaboration between stakeholders were decisive to reach a high compliance rate and were likely to increase the program’s effectiveness.As a whole, this PhD thesis demonstrated that, based on an ergonomic work exposure field analysis, a supervised workplace APA program can help to prevent WMSD symptoms of the low back among vineyard workers. Interestingly, even though the question of sustainability still remains to be assessed, these promising results have convinced other wine-producing companies to integrate this APA program as one component of their health policies already including ergonomic approaches

Повний текст джерелаThe handicap psychique (psychological handicap) is a French expression which has imposed itself recently. It is the subject of various meanings. We place it in the very broad context of vulnerabilities and in the more restricted situations of handicap. While it is commonly accepted that psychological handicap is a social consequence of a mental disease, we show that people with handicap of psychological origin (HOPO) have no proven mental disorder and do not undergo any psychiatric treatment. We rely on the experience of a plan called Médiation logement. In this “Housing mediation” clinical psychologists meet people who are reclusive in their homes, or who exhibit behaviour or neighbourhood disturbances. Those people have no psychiatric history and we show that they share a common feature: a discrete incapacitating syndrome of psychological origin (DISOPO). This leads us to give a new definition of psychological handicap. Then we propose a clinical reading tool that would allow a team to make an early diagnosis of this DISOPO that appears in a person with a singular fragility when faced with personal and / or social traumatic of stressful event

Повний текст джерелаDans ce document, je positionne tout d'abord les travaux proposés au sein de la communauté EIAH (chapitre 1) ce qui me permet d'expliciter les théories d'apprentissage auxquelles ces travaux se réfèrent ainsi que les principaux verrous scientifiques posés par l'ingénierie des EIAH. Le chapitre 2 présente ma démarche de recherche au cours de ces travaux ainsi que les questions de recherche spécifiques qui sont au cœur des activités menées. Ce chapitre me permet donc de positionner mes travaux par rapport à ceux que mènent d'autres équipes nationales et internationales sur des problématiques identiques. Je présente ensuite (chapitre 3) les principaux résultats qui portent sur l'ingénierie de modèles de conception pour les situations d'apprentissage de type situations-problèmes coopératives, mais aussi sur l'usage de ces modèles et la démarche de conception qu'ils supposent. Les travaux qui se sont succédés ont permis de définir et d'expérimenter différents langages visuels, ce qui nous a conduit à proposer un profil UML dédié à la description des situations problèmes coopératives, le langage CPM. Le chapitre 4 me permet enfin de dresser un bilan de mon activité d'enseignant chercheur à l'Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour.

We decided to focus on the connection between, on the one hand, the emotions felt by the teacher in contact with a disabled child in her working environment and, on the other hand, the evolution of her interpretation of this professional situation and finally the construction of her experience. Everything indicates that the teacher is part of « a co-transformational dynamic of one’s emotions, activity and the interpretation of the activity (of oneself or the other) and one’s experience ». Our results demonstrate a « co-transformation between the teacher and the child », a mutual influence in which the emotions and the activity could be, in turn, the cause or the consequence of each other. Here we would speak of a double « joint transformational dynamic » between the teacher and the child in a co-activity. By « joint transformations between the teacher and the child », we mean : the transformation of emotions and activity (mutually observed and formulated by the teacher), as well as the evolution of her interpretation of these professional situations. This « encounter » seems to place them in a « co-development » that is tailored « one to the other », « one with the other » and « one for the other » Our analysis reveals that, in all likelihood, a double dynamic has been established between: the development of the child’s learning and the teacher’s « professional development » (Wittorski, 2007)

Повний текст джерелаEnvironmental and health impact assessment of accidental or intentional releases of potentially hazardous materials in the atmosphere is increasingly supported by the development of modeling tools. Their potential to assess the spatial and temporal extent and severity of toxic plumes contributes to their growing development as CBRN-E emergency support tools. However, the Fukushima nuclear accident underlined that their support is not yet optimal regarding civil security organizations in charge of population protection. This research therefore tends to clarify the role of these modelling tools in emergency management. For this purpose, interviews and observations of crisis exercises have been conducted. This study suggests that nowadays, CBRN-E emergency management takes place in a sensemaking co-constructing process between CBRN-E experts and emergency managers contributing to the achievement of consensus in the decision making process. This study also highlights the key role played by the crisis center, regarding its proper organizational structure as a sharing place between actors with complementary expertise and experience, in the perception and response to changing circumstances. Thus, this study suggests that by providing situation assessment results, modeling tools meet the current practices both in terms of emergency support tools used for civilian protection organization and in respect of each actors' contributions. In this perspective, these modelling tools are likely to end up being part of the development of crisis management support tools for building a collective representation of the CBRN-E situation between expertise and decision

This is a descriptive research based on observation and description of teams organisation through the views of actors of national education, in St. Martin Island first and then in Guadeloupe. The challenge is to study the impacts that will bring various elements chosen on the implementation of the teamwork in schools, as it is recommended by the minsterial official texts.This study is based on the model of Engeström. It’s a qualitative approach and which favours the use of semi-directive interview. The corpus consists of 80 inter- views, supplemented by four surveys.In a first part, the thesis concentrates on the functioning and the organization of the headmasters in schools, as manager of the teaching team. The second part is based on the accurate analysis of the initial and continuous training system of personal of education (headmasters, teachers and inspectors) in France and in the world. The observations of the teamwork in difficult areas will show if the geographical location of schools promotes the organisation of the staff that officiates in those places

Повний текст джерелаThis dissertation is part of the continuing research of Professor Loïc Chalmel in history of pedagogical ideas on the "Self" and the "Social self", which are two distinct ideological and educational processes. Based on empirical data collected as part of a research program on dropout and school dropout at Ettore Bugatti High School in Illzach between 2015 and 2018 - which we crossed with other materials from different sources - we have achieved not only a broad and in-depth understanding of the two educational systems but also a specific knowledge of the issues inherent in the support and resiliency of audiences with specific needs in a context of instructional design. For example, we proposed a modelling of support to resilience considering three fundamental aspects: the individual, the organization and the environment. In so doing, we have highlighted the concepts of pedagogy of individuation and personal development and psychopedagogical architecture of training, and enabling environment, inspired mainly on the theories of Carl Jung, Isabel Briggs Myers and Katherine Cook Briggs, Henry Mintzberg, Boris Cyrulnik, Jean Pierre Pourtois, Huguette Desmet, Pierre Falzon and Jacques Langevin. Повний текст джерелаOccupational stress is a national health issue in France. However, few studies tackle it amongst the French Emergency workers. Our work focuses on three areas: i) the adaptation and validation of the Job stress survey among French firefighters (Study 1), ii) the evaluation of job stress and explanatory models of BO within these population (Studies 2, 3 and 4) and iii) the implementation of a secondary prevention program for 6 weeks (Study 5). Methodology: For the 1-4 studies, both firefighters and craft workers responded to questionnaires focused on the stress psychopathology at work, personality and coping. As for study 5, the effectiveness of the prevention program has been tested with two groups of professional firefighters: control group versus intervention group; through questionnaires on stress and BO. Three time measurement have been retained, namely before, after and three months after the end of the program. Results: The stress is characterized by two dimensions, namely the "job pressure at work" and the "operational work". In Interaction with some temperamental patterns; these two dimensions explain in part the BO. As for the prevention program, a decrease in the severity of both stress and BO symptoms is noted between the beginning and end of the program for the intervention group. Conclusion: Working on occupational stress requires a qualitative and quantitative approach allowing a more comprehensive vision. This will also adapt prevention programs focused on both the individual and its work environment

Abstract This thesis is concerning about the research of how to explicate 「place」; the researcher constructed the meaning and local knowledge of everyday life of 「Shin-Kong Station」via in the process of concerning, reading, explaining, and involvement in this place. Also, the researcher described the reasons and the social meaning of 「Shin-Kong Station」transferred to 「Shin-Kong railroad park」 The researching tried to find back the lacking of historical meaning in a natural science place. The discussion topics including「Local place construction process 」「Local collective memory 」「Local life experience in everyday」, these 3 topics helps to construct the「Shin-Kong Station」, which has disappeared. By mutual construction and processing in the local times, places, characters, and things, to discuss the occurrence of self-identity of「Shin-Kong Station」, and the mutual thought between people and place, also learn to read the meaning of community culture while gaze in the fated process of a place. On methodology side, taken from cultural heritage, historical documents and graphs of sugar rail, collective of old photos, local elders, life experience from inhabitant, and space experience by body, to process the deep reading of space. On knowledge side, via Greetz’s The Interpretation of Cultures to had a deeper explication, aid with Heidegger’s phenomenology of being, Merleau-Ponty phenomenology of perception, and Benjamin’s treatise to help researcher gaze in the space. Attempt from the aspect of the space construction, memory, and body involvement in everyday life to discuss and introvert the break-even saying in human’s experience of the space. The station is actually a town, it records the historical fact of inhabitant’s living memory in different areas by transporting; and will become the eternal home in the heart of inhabitant, because in the process of meeting then togetherness.

Повний текст джерелаCette thèse vise le développement de GeoGebraTUTOR (GGBT), un espace de travail géométrique (ETG) qui intègre un système tutoriel pour l’obtention d’un milieu respectueux du raisonnement idiosyncratique de l’élève. Le raisonnement mathématique, comme l’apprentissage, ne s’exerce pas de manière linéaire, il repose sur un remaniement conceptuel continu. Il est donc peu étonnant qu’une approche séquentielle inflexible pour l’exercice de la démonstration en géométrie soit source d’embûches. Les systèmes tutoriels existants pour l’exercice de la démonstration en géométrie offrent une variété d’outils sans pour autant soulager l’élève de cette rigidité. Le design multidisciplinaire de GGBT repose sur une conception dans l’usage qui articule plusieurs cycles de recherche et de développement successifs. Cette méthodologie itérative et anthropocentrique confère à GGBT une intelligence qui nait d’une convergence d’analyses a priori et a posteriori successives. Cette thèse concerne les deux premiers cycles du développement de GGBT. La première phase du développement implique l’élaboration a priori d’un système capable de recevoir et d’analyser les démarches singulières de démonstration des élèves en fonction de solutions expertes préalablement identifiées. Ce premier prototype de GGBT est conçu en fonction d’une analyse de la relation didactique entre un enseignant réel et l’élève, et la relation didactique simulée entre un agent tuteur virtuel et ce même élève. Cette analyse théorique a priori établit un cadre conceptuel liminaire qui vise à encadrer la création d’un ETG idoine permettant à l’apprenti géomètre de se livrer à son travail mathématique. Cette version initiale de GGBT est mise à l’essai par des élèves réels guidés par leur enseignant ordinaire. Leurs interactions sont ensuite étudiées pour modéliser et implémenter un premier système tutoriel autonome à l’image des échanges témoignant du contrat didactique observé. Le second cycle de développement s’amorce avec la modélisation et la programmation d’une structure tutorielle autonome et d’une interface renouvelée, qui contribuent conjointement au design a priori d’un espace de travail géométrique. La deuxième version ainsi obtenue est également testée en contexte de classe réel. Cette fois, l’exercice empirique vise la validation de la gestion des messages par le système tutoriel et l’exploration des raisonnements instrumentés dans une perspective de précision du travail géométrique possible à l’interface de l’ETG qu’est GGBT. Ce parcours doctoral se clôt par l’exploration d’avenues de recherche potentielles pour la poursuite du développement et du raffinement de GGBT.
This thesis aims at modeling GeoGebraTUTOR, a geometrical workspace that relies on the works of a tutorial system for the definition of a milieu respectful of the student’s idiosyncratic reasoning. Mathematical reasoning, like learning, does not evolve in a linear fashion. It relies on continuous conceptual reorganizations. Therefore, it is little wonder that a linear and inflexible approach for the exercise of geometrical proof creates difficulties. Existing tutorial systems for the solving of geometrical proof problems offer a variety of tools without relieving the student of this rigidity. GGBT’s multidisciplinary design relies on a design in use approach that articulates a series of research and development cycles. This iterative anthropocentric methodology provides GGBT with an intelligence resulting from the confrontation of successive a priori and a posteriori analyses. This thesis is rooted in GGBT’s two first development cycles. The first phase of design implies the planning of a system able to take in singular student proofs and analyze their value compared to previously implemented expert answers. This first GGBT prototype is designed according to an analysis of the didactical relationship between the teacher and the student as well as the relationship that takes place between the student and the tutor agent who evolves within the didactical milieu. This a priori analysis establishes theoretical guidelines, which will steer the design of a geometrical workspace that enables the learning geometer to accomplish his mathematical work. A first GGBT prototype is put to the test with real students assisted by their regular teacher. Their interactions are then studied in order to model and implement a first self-governing tutorial system according to the dialogues reflecting the observed didactical contract. The second design cycle begins with the modeling and programming of a tutorial structure and of a renewed interface, both of which contribute to the planning of a geometrical workspace. This second prototype is also tested in a real class environment, although this time the empirical exercise aims, on the one hand, at validating the management of the tutor’s help messages, and on the other hand at exploring the student’s instrumented reasoning to specify the mathematical activity made possible by the GGBT geometrical workspace. This doctoral endeavor ends with the exploration of potential research avenues for the ongoing design and refining of GGBT.

The aim of this study was to discuss the relationships among leisure perceived freedom, situational involvement and place attachment of customers in creative life industries. The purposes of the research were as follows. Survey the participation profile of the customers. Analyze the differences of different demographic variables in leisure perceived freedom, situational involvement and place attachment. Simultaneously, induct the relationships among induct the relationships among all of them mentioned above. The objects of the research were the customers of experiencing food culture in creative life industries. The study used random and quota sampling, distributing 450 questionnaires. And 437 valid questionnaires were retrieved with an effective response rate of 97.1 percent. The statistic software SPSS was applied for data analyses. The statistical methods included descriptive statistics, independent t test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's product-moment correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The major findings of this study were summarized as follows. The main customers in creative life industries are in the age of 30-39, married with children. The elder customers have lower place attachment. The customers who married and have children are under time pressure in situational involvement. Spending more time in creative life industries influences customer's leisure perceived freedom, situational involvement and place attachment positively. Additionally, the customers are willing to pay $200-300 NTD to participate the experiential activities have significant positive effect on leisure perceived freedom, situational involvement and place attachment. The more companies will cause higher leisure perceived freedom. Product promotion situation has significant positive effect to situational involvement. Furthermore, females have deeper involvement then others. Customer's leisure perceived freedom and situational involvement can significantly predict place attachment. Meanwhile, the product promotion situation dimension of situational involvement has the best prediction. Finally, hoping the results of the study will provide the managers of creative life industries as reference for planning hospitality facilities and activities.

The term deixis is derived from a Greek word deiktikos which means 'point at' and it is used in grammar to refer to those expressions which describe the essential points of orientation in a speech situation. The interpretation of deictic expressions can only be made in relation to a specific reference point (the deictic centre). Five deictic categories are distinguished. Person deixis concerns the deictic persons, that is the speaker, the addressee and possibly a third person if he/she/it is present in the speech situation. Person deixis is mainly reflected in the concordia! and the pronominal system of Northern Sotho. Social deixis refers to those expressions which reflect the speaker's attitude towards the addressee or the third person. Such expressions include lexical items which reflect the speaker's admiration, dislike or respect towards the addressee, as well as kinship terms and vocatives. Although the pronominal system of Northern Sotho is neutral with regard to sex, there are other linguistic ways in which gender distinctions can be drawn. Place deictic expressions are used to identify the location of an object relative to the deictic centre. The location of the speech participants or their bodies may constitute this deictic centre. Demonstratives, demonstrative-copulatives, locational copulatives, locative adverbs and certain verbs are used for this purpose in Northern Sotho. Time deixis is mainly lexicalised by means of temporal adverbs and grammaticalised by means of tense morphemes in the Northern Sotho verb. The interpretation of these expressions depends on the deictic centre (time when the utterance is made). Time adverbs as well as the tenses describe the time of an event. These structures will indicate whether the action took place before coding time (past tense), whether it will take place after coding time (future tense), or whether it coincides with coding time (present tense). Discourse deixis pertains to those expressions which are used to refer to parts of the discourse, or to nominal antecedents of which the referent is not present in the extra-linguistic context of the utterance. Demonstratives, demonstrative copulatives, third person pronouns, certain adverbs, identifying copulatives, certain qualificatives and certain conjunctions are used for this purpose in Northern Sotho.

Повний текст джерелаThe increasing difficulty of providing university education in developing West African countries due to lack of access and inadequate facilities, combined with the breakneck development of information and communication technologies (ICT), have given rise to hopes that open and distance learning (ODL) can provide a practical alternative to face-to-face classrooms (OECD, 2006). However, although the literature reports that ICT and the interactivity they provide can foster learning (Karsenti, 2006), the reality of current education systems forces us to admit that not only has the ODL revolution not been fully realized (OECD, 2006), it will happen only when, to cope with transactional distance, which is a major factor in ODL, learners will not be content with simply learning but will learn how to learn, and this will require autonomous skills. Nevertheless, despite decades of interest and research, real learner autonomy is still marginal, and philosophical debates have replaced the quest for practical solutions (Albero, 2003). It was therefore deemed relevant to explore how ODL educators use available solutions, said to foster learner autonomy, such as certain forms of tutoring and group work. The aim was to gain a deeper understanding of how these practices are applied and their role in the failure to develop autonomy. Following the works of Albero (2003), this study organizes the principles of autonomy within a conceptual framework: interrelations between action and development are described, evidencing the importance of providing support to learners. This topological dimension underscores how educational support must take into account the diverse areas where learners can exercise their autonomy, and a temporal dimension highlights the importance of the progressive reduction of support. This study was initiated in 2009 under the ODL program of the 2iE (International Institute for Water and the Environment) at Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. It is organized as three articles: the first seeks to identify the conditions for effective ODL as perceived by learners, and evokes the need for autonomous learning; the second attempts to understand, based on interviews with tutors, whether coaching practices conform to autonomous principles; and the third, based on the expressed intentions of the course designers, examines course compliance with autonomous principles. Given the geographic distance between learners and our aim to understand their perceptions of ODL, we adopted a mixed methods approach, using qualitative methods to better understand learners’ perceptions (Karsenti & Savoie-Zajc, 2004) and quantitative methods to account for their isolation. To grasp the educators’ perceptions, we opted to use qualitative description as a more appropriate way to comprehend the social issues involved (Karsenti & Savoie-Zajc, 2004). Of the 170 learners who were emailed a questionnaire, 62 responded. The results appear to confirm that learner autonomy is a condition for successful ODL. Nevertheless, requests by the learners for more support, despite ongoing efforts under the coaching system, efforts recognized by the learners themselves and confirmed by the ten tutors interviewed out of 40 approached at the 2iE, led us to reconsider: there may still be a place for heteronomous learning. The analysis suggested that learners’ dissatisfaction could be explained by the failure to take into account diverse aspects liable to influence learning. In addition, referring to the interviews with the 11 course designers (out of a total of 30), it appeared that, although they were well aware of the need to adapt the courses to the realities of ODL, neither site-specific contents nor flexible structures were included in the course design. The study concludes on the urgent need to cast off traditional face-to-face learning modes and to hire professional educators trained in learner empowerment. And the question arises: will autonomy ever be defined in the literature as a praxis, i.e. a goal in itself, or will it remain a poiesis, whereby autonomy aims for production and loses its purpose once the objective has been obtained?

Повний текст джерелаThe multicultural agent is a community worker who works with families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Sensitive to these families’ needs, the agent aims to provide them with culturally adapted interventions. As such, the agent quickly becomes a reference for these culturally diverse families. The objective of this qualitative research is to better understand the experience and perceptions of community workers with regard to their roles, the variety of conditions that affect their work, their relationships, and the dynamics between themselves and their external partners, such as schools and child protective services (CPS), more specifically when the security or development of a child is potentially compromised. Ten semi-directed interviews with twelve participants were conducted. The verbatim were thereafter summited to a descriptive content analysis validated by a second analyst. Results highlighted eight different roles held by the multicultural agent. Some of these roles are enacted directly with families, other roles relate to interactions with partners, and two of them refer to interventions when doubts arise concerning the security or development of a child. These roles take place in organizations and with partners, each of which holds a certain dynamic that influence the experiences of the agents. These same dynamics are themselves influenced by a variety of systemic factors. Indeed, there are certain conditions that can benefit or compromise the scope of their work. Inequal power held by the different partners often represents an obstacle in agents’ relationships with large institutions. Even though attempts are made to develop real partnerships with schools, the multicultural agent’s place is not yet fully recognized by CPS. This study brings knowledge on some aspects of inter organisational work that is to be considered in order to create a fully functioning partnership between multicultural agents, schools, and protection services. It also enlightens the need to better adapt the interventions for families from cultural diversity facing a possible report to CPS.
