In strategic contexts actors may costlessly renege on verbal commitments. Many analysts consequently reject negotiation talk as an empirical basis for examining political interaction. They focus on deeds (e.g., missile deployments, troop movements, defense expenditures), which more likely than cheap talk signal sincere intent. Dialogical or pragmatic analysts, however, apply tools of linguistics and formal logic in systematic examinations of negotiation talk. They finesse the problem of insincerity by imposing upon themselves the burden of showing the consistency of actors possibly insincere utterances with their interests and prior commitments. We present a dialogical analysis of the initial conversations between US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Chinese leaders in February of 1973. The Chinese leaders test Kissingers sincerity by attempting to trap him in contradictions or drive him into implausible conversational commitments. This practice lends support to the heuristic proposed by dialogical/pragmatic analysts for finessing the problem of insincerity.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale for host sincerity. Design/methodology/approach The ten-item host sincerity scale was developed by following a multi-stage scale development procedure (Delphi technique, qualitative interviews and surveys). Findings The findings reveal that host sincerity is a second-order construct with two underlying dimensions: “sincere social interaction” and “sincere emotional response”. By incorporating host sincerity into the consumer-based model of authenticity, the findings established significant relationships among all constructs, confirming the predictive validity of the host sincerity construct. Research limitations/implications Data were gathered from visitors to troglodyte heritage sites (Kandovan and Cappadocia). Future studies should test the newly formed sincerity scale at other cultural destinations to further explore the generalisability of the scale. Further, data were gathered from tourists. Future studies should consider host sincerity from a host perspective. Practical implications Cultural destination managers and local hosts can use this instrument as a supplementary tool to evaluate how sincere their hospitality offering appears to tourists. Originality/value This paper develops a host sincerity scale to explore the importance of sincere host–guest interactions and tourists’ emotional response to these interactions. It extends the consumer-based model of authenticity by drawing further attention to the importance and impact of host sincerity in stimulating memorable tourism experiences.

The purposes of this research were to develop the Honesty test using situation judgment test format to reduce the possibility of faking good in personality scales and to identify construct validity and concurrent validity of the developed scale. Total 359 employees(male, 46.24%; female, 53.76%) were used in this study. The Honesty test developed in this study consists of 5 to 6 items 6 items for each 4 sub-constructs (i.e., sincerity, fairness, greed avoidance and modesty) of honesty-humility factor in HEXACO model. Confirmatory factor analysis to assess the construct validity of the Honesty test resulted in favorable goodness of fit indexes for the 4-factor model(CFI = .946, TLI = .925, RMSEA = .046). Also, favorable goodness of fit indexes(CFI = .934, TLI = .911, RMSEA = .049) in the higher-order factor analysis showed that the 4 sub-constructs were converged into the single honesty-humility factor. To investigate the possibility of faking good could be reduced in the situational judgment test format compared to the Likert test format in measuring honesty, correlations between the honesty scores in each test format and the scores of faking good were compared. Although the correlations between the humility sub-constructs(i.e., greed avoidance and modesty) and faking good scores were not significantly different depending on the measurement format, the correlations between the honesty sub-constructs(i.e., sincerity and fairness) and faking good scores were significantly low in the situational judgment test format than in the Likert test format. The concurrent validity analyses revealed that the Honesty test using situational judgment test format had significant correlations with Machiavellism personality(r = -.21) and self-control(r = .27). Limitations of the study and directions for future study were discussed.

In this article it is argued that individual sincerity has become the most significant determinant of whether or not a religious or philosophical belief is to be recognised as such for the purposes of accessing putative legal protections for individuals. However, a clear test of individual sincerity has not been fully articulated by the courts in the UK or indeed elsewhere. In this context, the possibility of developing a test based in large part on consistency of individual behaviour is considered in this article, and some objections noted. The article concludes that such a test is both useful and desirable in principle, and should be developed; however, it must be applied with great care in order to remain inclusive of those who may be driven to apparent inconsistency by fear or as a result of other factors.

The objective of this research is to reveal sincerity of main character in “The Vow” movie direct by Michael Sucsy. This research used qualitative method to obtain data through the way human’s things and behave as social being. This phenomenon is used as a group of data and analyzed for trends. The writer will analyze the data by using text analysis approach. Text analysis particularly oriented toward ethnography methods or grounded theory. It means that all the methods of test analysis which somehow approach texts by means of categories, since it no longer a matter only of the communicative content of the text but also their linguistic form. Based on the research sincerity of main character in The Vow movie direct by Michale Sucsy, the writer found 32 data invention which divides into 3 kinds of sincerity there are the noble high virtue in response to righteous request, the fundamental duty in response to lawful right, and sincerity of the utterly faithful by thought, feelings and desires. There are of the data,25% data of thought, 40% data of feelings, and 35% data of desires that found by the script in The Vow movie directed by Michale Sucsy.

Recently, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) returned to the test of individual sincerity for determining whether there has been an infringement of freedom of religion pursuant to section 2(a) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the Charter) in SL c Commission scolaire des Chênes. Sincerity of belief or in practice as necessary for religious expression on the part of a complainant has been accepted from some of the earliest Charter cases as the triggering requirement for a section 2(a) claim, and, in itself, sufficient to establish a claim which a court must then balance against conflicting claims pursuant to section 1 (‘reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society’) or section 15 (equality rights). In SL, the court confirmed that mere sincerity is no longer sufficient and that an objective burden of proof now rests on a claimant to show how a state-sanctioned requirement infringes the fundamental right to freedom of religion before competing claims will be assessed. In SL, the court found that the complainants had failed to show how a religious education course mandated for all students without exception by the Government of Quebec interfered with what they argued was their religious freedom as Roman Catholic parents to pass on their faith to their children. This result has also been interpreted to mean that the state has a right prior to parental rights in the religious formation of their own children, and, on this reading, has been highly controversial. The court's new formulation of a sincerity test may be of interest elsewhere. The earlier formulation in Syndicat Northcrest v Anselem was adopted by the House of Lords in R (Williamson) v Secretary of State for Education and Employment, and the subsequent spread of its use has since been subject to consideration in England.

La tesi presenta alcuni dei risultati di un esperimento longitudinale condotto in due carceri statunitensi tra settembre 2015 e giugno 2016. L’obiettivo dell’analisi è testare lo studio delle preferenze sociali nella cornice dell’Economia Comportamentale e della teoria dei giochi (osservazione diretta del comportamento dei soggetti chiamati a compiere delle scelte in alcune situazioni selezionate), piuttosto che attraverso risposte a questionari auto valutativi. Infatti vengono messe in relazione i comportamenti osservati nei giochi e le spiegazioni che i soggetti intervistati danno di essi. Attraverso analisi statistica si può arrivare a dire che i comportamenti osservati nei giochi non sono sempre sufficienti per evidenziare le preferenze sociali dei soggetti, così come, del resto, non lo sono le risposte narrative. La conclusione che viene tratta dall’elaborato è che osservazione diretta dei comportamenti e analisi delle narrative personali dei soggetti sono due elementi ugualmente importanti per la comprensione delle preferenze sociali e che, lungi dall’escludersi a vicenda, si completano.
The thesis presents some of the results of a longitudinal experiment conducted in two U.S. prisons between September 2015 and June 2016. The objective of the analysis is to test the efficacy of studying social preferences in the framework of behavioral Economics and game theory (direct observation of the behaviour of the subjects asked to make choices in real situations), rather than through self-evaluative questionnaires and surveys. In fact, the analysis links the behaviors observed in the games and the explanations given by the subjects. In general it can be said that the behaviors observed in the games are not always sufficient to highlight the social preferences of the subjects, as well as, moreover, are not the narrative answers. The conclusion that comes from the elaborate is that direct observation of the behaviors and analysis of the personal narratives of the subjects are two equally important tools in the study social preferences and that, far from being mutually exclusive, they complement each other.

This thesis considers various interactions between law, conscience, and religion in three countries: Germany, the United States, and Australia. Looking in detail at recent controversies, including those over headscarves and crucifixes, and sometimes exploring philosophical and theological themes, this thesis makes comparisons across these countries based on case law, existing legislation, and constitutional provisions, as well as proposed legislative reform. The thesis also considers debates that occur inside religious traditions and reflects upon how such discussions impact the well-established sincerity test, which prohibits courts from taking positions on theological questions. Understanding a foreign solution to a familiar problem often leads to a more precise grasp of one’s own law. This thesis applies this axiom to inform debate in the future work of Australian federal and state Parliaments as they attempt to protect freedom of conscience and religion in a complex social milieu.

Both legal scholars and judges have expressed discomfort with rigorously questioning the sincerity of plaintiffs requesting a religious exemption. Many have claimed that the sincerity test is in fact impossible to perform accurately, or poses grave risks of improper or biased application. These arguments overlook the fact that courts routinely evaluate the religious sincerity of certain categories of claimants, including incarcerated persons, by applying a sensible test based on neutral and objective factors. This article demonstrates that the most common criticisms of the sincerity test are largely speculative and not supported by case law. It also reveals that the test is currently applied most often to litigants who are members of a disfavored social class. Finally, this chapter outlines a model sincerity test based on existing case law, and contends that this test should become a routine part of all religious exemption litigation.

Abstract This chapter examines the province of emotion in Johnson’s life and writings and illustrates the significant place of feelings in one of the eighteenth century’s sanest of rational minds. Johnson’s personal emotion may sometimes be held at a bearable distance by his neo-Latin verses; but emotional energy figures centrally when Johnson is evaluating the tragedies of Shakespeare and is a test of sincerity in his Lives of the Poets. Poignant and powerful emotion energizes Johnson’s own creative work, as is apparent in the humanly sympathetic episodes of Rasselas and in the tensions generated by his most forceful couplet verse. Johnson’s private distress does not displace his criticism’s intellectual control, humour and expressive precision but his capacity for emotional life comprehensively informs the judgments he makes.

This paper, first published in 1974, concerns the very corrupt Latin text of Seneca the Elder. The standard edition at the time was that of H. J. Müller (1887), already rather antiquated; the text has since been re-edited and much improved by L. Håkanson (1989). The author stresses that the greatest care has to be taken in trying to interpret the words of clever declaimers, which are usually quoted without proper context. The chapter first discusses the manuscript tradition (sceptically as regards the sincerity of the Vaticanus), the way in which the Excerpta should be used, and the help that attention to prose rhythm can afford. It then proposes a long series of conjectural emendations, grouped under the headings ‘Deletions’, ‘Additions’, ‘Other Conjectures’, and ‘The Greek’. Passages are given detailed and technical discussion.

This article is devoted to the biography of the famous Soviet academic N. S. Derzhavin (1877–1953) and his academic activities, primarily relating to Bulgaria and the Bulgarians. This scholar had a dizzying career, became an academic without a doctorate and created his own specialist institute, by virtue of his sensitive understanding of the state of affairs in the country. He left behind a rich heritage though some of his books did not stand the test of time. All his life N.S. Derzhavin sincerely sympathized with the objects of his study.

This chapter will discuss and present a new model to perform a competency map in an educational institute which has moderate number of faculty members on whom the map has to be performed. Performing such a map is a tough but essential task. Hence utmost objectivity must be followed for the procedure. In this chapter the authors performed academic load assignment to the faculty members of a particular dept at the onset of a semester. Few parameters that have been considered as the input parameters are depth of knowledge, sincerity, class management, contribution towards research, text book publication. part from that one of the main concerns is the assignment is done by taking into consideration the preferences of a particular faculty in terms of teaching a subject. There are number of constraints which need to be considered while making the load assignment. The AICTE guidelines for teaching load allotment have been considered as a baseline. The MOPSO has been used to perform the competency map and the simulation results have been presented to show the effectiveness of the method.

Chapter 5 shows how Henry Adams's Education intervenes in a conversation about the agency of the educated elite amongst Harvard-affiliated thinkers including William James, Theodore Roosevelt, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Charles William Eliot. Identifying Du Bois as a New England liberal, the chapter notes that both he and Eliot call 'college-bred' men to duty and advocate for liberal education in a sincere, direct mode. Adams's Education opposes such arguments partly by being ironic. Observing that its celebrated ironies are crucially constituted by sincere statements from liberal thinkers, the chapter shows that The Education takes up words and ideas that are salient in Du Bois's Souls of Black Folk. Its ironic rewriting of elements from that text flamboyantly exercises (and thus consolidates) the power that belongs to its author. Disparaging action grounded in consensus, collectivity, and sincerity, which he associates derisively with Boston and Harvard, Adams advocates an alternate mode of action that inheres in irony, doubt, indirection, and individual disruptiveness. In enacting this mode, The Education demonstrates its formidable potency. But Adams's showy performance of power via inaction nevertheless becomes a key source for the twentieth-century narrative about impotently passive 'genteel' thinkers.

The paper explores various aspects of Mark Aldanov’s participation in the life and work of Ivan Bunin in the 1940–50s. The facts of assistance to Bunin restored with the help of correspondence are characterized. His help consisted in the implementation of publishing projects, the measures taken to improve the financial situation and solve everyday issues of Bunin, to preserve his reputation as the first writer of Russia. Aldanov sincerely and faithfully preserved and strengthened their friendship, defended Bunin from the harsh criticism of his contemporaries, who did not accept his stories of the 1940s, and saved his political reputation. To support his friend, he did several desperate things. It is suggested that Aldanov could have helped Bunin in preparing a speech for the celebration of his 80th birthday. Caring for Bunin’s reputation was continued by Aldanov in correspondence with the writers in the 1950s, in a discussion of the book “Chekhov” with E.D. Kuskova, in communication with V.A. Schwartz and S.M. Schwartz, N.R. Vreden. After the death of Bunin, Aldanov participated in various literary events dedicated to his memory. The paper researches the documents stored in the House-Museum of Marina Tsvetaeva in Moscow, in particular, fragments of letters, as well of Aldanov’s speech about Bunin and the text “Memories of Bunin”, which is published. The facts described can be used to compile a detailed chronicle of the life and work of Bunin in the 1940–1950s.
