Abstract: A suspension system is a crucial part of the vehicle system which assists in handling the vehicle and safety of the occupants. From leaf spring type suspension to multi-link suspension and modern adaptive suspension systems, different modifications and researches are practiced to enhance dynamic characteristics of suspension optimizing drivability and ride comfort. The presented study focuses on the analysis of double wishbone suspension system. The components used and working of this suspension are also explained as well as the numerical calculation for creation of the spring is presented. The Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is carried out using Simscale software. The suspension is analyzed through static analysis and results show acceptable values. Proses pengembangan roket melalui beberapa tahapan dengan tujuan untuk memastikan performa roket saat disimulasikan. Salah satu tahapan penting dalam proses pengembangan roket adalah mengetahui aerodinamika pada roket. Aerodinamika pada roket perlu diketahui karena mempengaruhi performa saat roket disimulasikan. Untuk mendapatkan hasil analisis aerodinamika pada roket, diperlukan analisis pada harga CM (Coefficient Momen), harga CD (Coefficient Drag), dan harga CL (Coefficient Lift). Pada penelitian ini, objek yang digunakan adalah FFAR (Folding Fin Aerial Rocket) dengan diameter 70 mm. Proses analisis aerodinamika dilakukan melalui simulasi dengan dua software, yaitu SimScale dan Missile Datcom. Hasil analisis aerodinamika pada roket dengan memvariasikan waktu (s) dan kecepatan pada simulasi menggunakan SimScale menunjukan hasil yang cukup convergent dengan pergerakan pada Mach 0.1, 0.2, dan 0.3 saling mendekati. Sedangkan hasil simulasi pada Missile Datcom dengan memvariasikan sudut serang (α) dan kecepatan juga menunjukan hasil yang convergent dengan pergerakan pada Mach 0.1, 0.2, dan 0.3 saling mendekati.

Анотація:
У овом раду разматра се употреба рачунарске симулације у области визуализације аеродинамичких карактеристика дизајна летјелица. Примјена симулације спроведена је кроз компара­тивну анализу два софтвера за рачунарку динамику флуида на примјеру три модела летјелица медијске франшизе „Star Wars“. Испитан је утицај дизајна модела на аеродинамичке перформансе летјелица и како модификације у њиховој геометрији утичун на резултате. Два софтверска окружења која су поређена су SimScale CFD и Autodesk CFD. При поређењу софтвера изведени су закључци о њиховим предностима и манама кроз приложено корисничко искуство. Описани су проблеми који су се јављали и могућа унапређења. Циљ рада је представити предности коршћења рачунарске симулационе технологије за потребе процене и развоја дизајна. Кроз упоредну ревизију алата наведена два софтвера изведена је њихова карактеризација и класификација.

Abstract: Spoilers have been there in practice since years for the purpose of improving aerodynamics of a car. The pressure drag created at the end of the vehicle, referred to as wake region affects handling of the vehicle. This could be hazardous for the cars at high speeds. By adding a spoiler to the rear of the car reduces that pressure drag and the enhanced downforce helps in better traction. The paper presents aerodynamic analysis of a spoiler through Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. The spoiler is designed using Onshape software and analyzed through SIMSCALE software. The simulation is carried out by changing angles of attack and velocities. The simulation results of downforce and drag are compared on the basis of analytical method. Abstract: From past decades, people are giving more attention to conservation of the fuels. The increasing number of passenger cars have increased the amount of traffic which directly impacts pollution and traffic congestion. Manufacturers are indulged into making lightweight and performance efficient automobiles. Implementation of different designs and materials has been in practice since ages. We need smaller vehicle designs for personal transport and electric vehicles to tackle the raising problems. In future designs, vehicles will be efficient enough to save more fuel and also the traffic problems may be solved. But for the design optimizations and experiments we need different analyses to be performed, one of which is aerodynamic analysis. In this paper a CFD analysis is done to check the aerodynamic performance of a proposed car design. The car has been designed using Onshape modeling software and analyzed in Simscale software. The car is subjected to different vehicle speeds and the results of drag coefficients and pressure plots are shown. Abstract A significant number of cooling technologies have been developed to maintain the PV module temperature within subscribed limits. This paper represents the simulation study of active cooling forced air convection with fins attached to the back of the solar panel using CFD SimScale software. It has been first carefully validated against experimental and numerical results available in the literature. The number of fins and the shape of perforated and dimpled in each fin were varied to compare cooling performance. Three types of fins were adapted into this simulation: traditional fins, circular, and triangle perforated/dimpled fins. The effect of solar irradiation and velocity inlet was also reviewed by applying the nominal operating condition from the experimental works. Results indicated that fin channels are a very effective cooling technique, which significantly reduces the average temperature of the PV cell, especially when increasing the number of fins from 20 to 26 fins. Also, the results show that the dimpled triangle fin had the highest average temperature drop with a percentage difference of 6% compared with the solar panel cooling with traditional fins.

Tubular pipe structures have been used in various applications—domestic, aviation, marine, manufacturing and material testing. The applications of tubular pipes have been considered greatly in the installation of tubular pipes, marine risers and pipe bending. For the investigation of plastic strains and the mechanical behaviour of a tube under bending, considerations were made utilising an exponent model with assumptions on the plane strain. The bending moment, wall thickness effect, cross-sectional distribution, stresses during bending and neutral layer boundaries were all presented as necessary theoretical formulations on the physics of tubular pipe bending. This model was based on the analytical and numerical investigation. In principle, the application can be observed as the spooling of pipes, bending of pipes and reeling. Comparisons were made on two models developed on the finite element analysis in Simscale OpenFEA, namely the linear-elastic and the elasto-plastic models. This study presents visualization profiles using plastic strain to assess its effect on the tubular pipes. This can increase due to the limitation of plastic deformation on the composite materials selected.

Flow control in piping systems is present in many engineering applications and is carried out by different components. In particular, ball valves consist of a plug with a cylindrical orifice that regulates the flow through rotation, modifying the effective passage section. In the present work, this type of device is studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). The simulations are carried out using the SimScale calculation platform, based on the free OpenFOAM software. The main objective of this analysis is to set and validate a numerical tool to predict the relationship between the opening percentage and the pressure loss for normalized valves, analyzing the flow structures developed in the vicinity of the plug. The models used are validated in axisymmetric problems of conduits with constant section and with a localized structure, comparing with the analytical solution and with numerical simulations, respectively. Then the case of a real ball valve in a turbulent regime at different openings is studied, comparing the results with experimental data and with numerical simulations carried out by other authors. A good agreement of the pressure loss coefficient is observed for each of the opening angles studied, verifying its independence on the Reynolds number.

In pyrolysis technology there are various geometric factors that affect the results of pyrolysis, one of which is the connecting pipe between the reactor and the condenser. In this study, simulations were carried out with simscale software to analyze the temperature, pressure and gas velocity in the pyrolysis pipe as the length of the pipe increases. The material used is stainless steel AISI 304. This research begins by determining the dimensions and materials of the pyrolysis pipe, the length of the pipe and the input temperature. The length of the pipe was varied by 1.5 m, 1.75 m and 2 m, with initial temperature variations of 450°C and 550°C, respectively. From the simulation result, Increasing of the pipa’s length then the heat transfer will be close to the optimum condition. So that the output temperature, pressure and velocity will be lower. This happens because the length and diameter of the pipe affect the output. From the simulation results, pipe lengths of 1.5 m, 1.75 m, 2 m with input temperatures of 450°C and 550°C obtained the best results for a pipe length of 2 m with an input temperature of 450°C.

Abstract: In this study, we will be performing structural analysis on the motorcycle winglet. The type of winglet used in this analysis is a square winglet from Aprilia RSV4 RF. The flap inside the winglet will be a NACA 6412 airfoil which will be placed upside down to generate downforce. It is very complicated to get results from the winglet. the analysis will be carried out on an active winglet. we will be considering 5 scenarios in Computational fluid dynamics, and 4 in the static, and 6 in vibration analysis. The CFD analysis will be done to obtain the force which later will be applied in the static analysis and vibration analysis to check the vibration frequency at different modes. The material used for the wing and for the body of the motorcycle will be carbon fiber reinforced polymer. As we will be changing the angle of the flap which is present in the winglet it necessary to check whether the CFD results are practical example the forces, coefficient of drag, etc. to prove that the design works. The FEA will help us prove that the design is safe. The model is designed in the Onshape which is a CAD modeling tool and the analysis will be done on the Simscale. In Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) cars engine heat management serves as an important factor for the performance of the vehicle. Therefore, a proper design of sidepod is crucial for optimal cooling of the engine since sidepods are designed to direct the airflow through the radiator. Also, since sidepods play an important role in the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle, factors such as drag and lift must also be considered along with the cooling of the engine. This paper brings forth the methodology carried out to design the sidepods effectively. First the optimal radiator angle is determined on which the maximum mass flow rate of air through the radiator core is observed. Angles are varied from 50, 70 and 90 degrees on various orientations with respect to the car. Fixing this radiator angle, various inlet and outlet areas of the sidepod are analyzed. Choosing the model with least drag and lift coefficient the sidepod is analyzed by sealing it at various sides. Finally, the effects of gills are also analyzed for better optimization of the sidepod. The models are designed in Solidworks and the CFD simulations are carried out in Simscale. Half car simulation is performed with symmetry conditions in order to reduce the cell count. The results of the analysis showed that the radiator angled forward with a diverging type sidepod yields in the better cooling of the engine.

Heat exchangers are important equipment for the process of placing heat. The most widely used type of heat exchanger is shell and tube. This type is widely used because of its simple and easy design. Design of shell and tube heat exchangers is done by the side or shell variations to get the desired performance. Therefore, research is conducted to study the effect of tube thickness on heat transfer, pressure drop, and stress that occurs in the shell and tube heat exchanger so that the optimal tube thickness is obtained. In this research, the activities carried out are the design of heat exchangers for the production of oxygen with a capacity of 30 tons/day. The standard used in this study is the 9th edition heat exchanger design guidance document compiled by the Tubular Exchanger Manufacturer Association (TEMA). Analysis of the tube thickness effect on heat transfer, pressure drop, and stress was carried out using the SimScale platform. The effect of variations in tube thickness on heat transfer is that the thicker the tube, the lower the heat transfer effectiveness. The highest value of the heat exchanger effectiveness is 0.969 at the tube thickness variation of 0.5 mm. The lowest value of the heat exchanger effectiveness is 0.931 at the tube thickness variation of 1.5 mm. The effect of variations in tube thickness on pressure drop is that the thicker the tube, the higher the pressure drop. The highest value of pressure drop is in the variation in tube thickness of 1.5 mm, 321 Pa. The lowest value of drop pressure is in the variation of 0.5 mm tube thickness, which is 203 Pa. The thickness of the tube also increases the maximum stress on the components of the shell, head, tubesheet, baffle, and saddle, but the value is fluctuating

To verify and analyze the dynamics model of servomotor and improve the efficiency of modeling and analysis, we research system of modeling and simulation on kollmorgen AKM41H servomotor in SimScape. According to the driving principle and mathematical model of DC servomotor, Simulink combined with SimScape and Solidworks part will conduct Control system simulation and analysis. By analyzing the frequency curve, we know that dynamics model of Kollmorgen servomotor is accurate. Semi-physical simulation based on SimScape, the angle of motor shaft can be fast and accurate to get the prespecified value. Parameters of feedback control system are selected reasonably, adjust the motor shaft’s speed so that it reduces to zero band. Research shows that SimScape combined with Solidworks take semi-physical simulation experiment. It can support simulation that is different complex engineering project. Compared with the traditional simulation model is more practical and analysis and modeling is more efficiency.

Background: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) came into existence with great success, thereby replacing the traditional methods used to simulate the problems related to the flow of fluid. First CFD utilitarian was introduced to the world in 1957, which was developed by a team at Los Alamos National Lab. For tremendous performance and to meet the expected results with ease for modern process conditions, engineers are now more inclined towards the use of simulation software rather than traditional methods. Hence, in the current scenario with the advancement of computer technologies, “CFD is recognized as an excellent tool for engineers to resolve real-world problems.” Introduction: CFD is defined as a branch of fluid dynamics which involves the use of numerical analysis and data structure to solve complications related to the flow of fluids (gasses or liquids). CFD is based on three major principles that are mass conservation, Newton's second law, and energy conservation. CFD has extended to a number of applications at an alarming rate in every field such as in aerospace, sports, food industry, engineering, hydraulics, HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air conditioning), automotive, environmental, power generation, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and many more. Hence, a number of software like ANSYS, Open Foam, SimScale, Gerris, Auto desk simulation, Code_Saturne, etc, are beneficial in order to execute the operations, and to find the solution of realworld problems within a fraction of seconds. Methods: CFD analysis involves three major steps; pre-processing, solution, and post-processing. Preprocessing deals with defining model goals, identification of domain, designing, and creating the grid. Solution involves setting up the numerical model, computing, and monitoring the solution; whereas, post-processing includes results of the examination and revision of the model. Results: The review includes current challenges about the computational fluid dynamics. It is relevant in different areas of engineering to find answers for the problems occurring globally with the aid of a number of simulation-based software hereby, making the world free from complex problems in order to have a non-complicated scenario. Conclusion: Computational fluid dynamics are relevant in each, and every kind of problem related to the fluid flow, either existing in the human body or anywhere. In the contemporary era, there are enormous numbers of simulation-based software, which provide excellent results with just one click, thereby resolving the problems within microseconds. Hence, we cannot imagine our present and upcoming future without CFD, which has ultimately made the execution of work easier, leaving behind non-complicating scenarios. Lastly, we can conclude that “CFD is a faster, smarter, and lighter way in designing process.”

A mathematical description of the solar tracking system is given. A kinematic model of the solar tracker is obtained. A working prototype of a simulation model of a solar tracking system with 3D visualization of the industrial object under consideration has been obtained. The mechanical characteristic of the rotation of the guidance system node has been removed. Comparative graphs of insolation generation for two types of tracker have been obtained

Una nueva aplicación en Simscape fue desarrollada con el objetivo de contar con una herramienta de simulación del comportamiento de un dispositivo de zeolita añadido a un refrigerador estándar. El programa se basó en el ejemplo 1.454 de Simscape de MATLAB R2015a, con el dispositivo de almacenamiento de energía colocado entre el evaporador y el compresor. La temperatura ambiental fue considerada como una función lineal a trozos. Para mantener la rápida ejecución de la aplicación, fue necesario usar un solucionador ode23t en lugar del ode23 original. El programa fue aplicado a un caso de estudio consistente en un refrigerador de tamaño medio con un dispositivo de zeolita no óptimo, solamente para examinar el desempeño del programa. Se llevó a cabo una comparación entre el ejemplo original de Simscape para el modelo 1.454 y la presente aplicación. Buena rapidez y robustez fueron obtenidas para los refrigeradores simulados de tamaño medio.

Abstract Nowadays, the use of quadcopters in daily life has become important due to its capabilities and ability to carry out many tasks in many fields like civil, military, industrial, and agricultural fields. The modelling of the quadcopter and deeply understanding its movements is very important to ensure that the simulations of its behaviour are as close as possible to reality and also helps us to design a flight controller. In this work, we used a modern technique on MATLAB (Simscape) to simulate a quadcopter in real-time. At first, we build a quadcopter using Simscape multibody then we simulated the PID regulator, the command algorithms, and the motor model with the applied forces on the body to achieve the global model that we can use to study the movement of the quadcopter on the three-axis which ensure a stable functioning. The results obtained show the stability of the four movements of the quadcopter (roll, pitch, yaw, and altitude).

The concept introduced by MathWorks in the Simscape product is the link representation between the SIMSCAPE library components that correspond to physical connections transmitting power. In this paper, a power insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) model using MATLAB graphical software is reproduced. An electrical IGBT behavior model using the Simscape Electronics library components is developed and analyzed. This model is parameterized using the constructor datasheet to ensure a good representation of the dynamic and static IGBT behaviors. An extraction and optimization studies of the IGBT model parameters using a stochastic algorithm implemented in Matlab are presented. The proposed method is based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to perfectly extract and optimize the model parameters using the mathematical model circuit equations and the provided datasheet characteristics. A simulation in the Matlab/Simulink environment and a comparison with the experimental results for an IGBT device example are carried out to demonstrate the proposed model accuracy.

Due to ever increasing performance requirements, model-based optimization and control strategies are increasingly being adopted by machine builders and automotive companies. However, this demands an increase in modelling effort and a growing knowledge of optimization techniques, as a sufficient level of detail is required in order to evaluate certain performance characteristics. Modelling tools such as MATLAB Simscape have been created to reduce this modelling effort, allowing for greater model complexity and fidelity. Unfortunately, this tool cannot be used with high-performance gradient-based optimization algorithms due to obfuscation of the underlying model equations. In this work, an optimization toolchain is presented that efficiently interfaces with MATLAB Simscape to reduce user effort and the necessary skill and computation time required for the optimization of high-fidelity drivetrain models. The toolchain is illustrated on an industrially relevant conjugate cam-follower system, which is modelled in the Simscape environment and validated with respect to a higher-fidelity modeling technique, namely, the finite element method (FEM).

Abstract the paper presents the development of an innovative non-linear, time domain numerical model for the simulation of offshore floating wind turbines, named MOST. The model is able to evaluate the movement of the platform in six degrees of freedom, the power production and the load cycles acting on the blades. MOST is implemented in Matlab-Simulink environment using Simscape Multibody. The aerodynamics is modelled with the blade element momentum theory and the hydrodynamics is modelled using WEC-Sim, a Simscape library developed by NREL and SANDIA. The use of Simscape offers great flexibility to quickly introduce complex dynamic systems such as hybrid wave-wind platforms, flexible platforms, or sea water active ballast systems. Additionally, Matlab provides useful toolboxes and extensive libraries for advanced control systems, linearisation analysis, parallelisation and generation of C code. The results of MOST are then compared to FAST, an open-source code widely used in the academic research. The case study is a 15 MW reference wind turbine installed on the Volturn US platform. The comparison shows a good agreement between the two codes with a significant reduction of the simulation time.

Das Modell wird anhand experimenteller Untersuchungen bezüglich der Temperaturverteilung validiert. Die Temperaturen der Kugelgewindetrieb-Spindel werden hierbei ortsvariabel mittels eines Infrarot (IR)-Sensors lokal auf der Spindeloberfläche ermittelt.   This paper presents the development of a thermal “Matlab Simscape“ model. The geometrically and timewise thermal-transient model called “SimTherm“ makes it possible to calculate the temperature and the expansion of ball screws. The model is validated with experimental temperature tests. The temperature of the ball screw spindle is established locally on the spindle surface by using an infrared sensor.

In this paper, a dynamic analysis for a 5 degree of freedom (DOF) robotic arm with serial topology is presented. The dynamic model of the robot is based on importing a tri-dimensional CAD model of the robot into Simulink®-Simscape™-Multibody™. The dynamic model of the robot in Simscape is a necessary and important step in development of the mechanical structure of the robot. The correct choice of the electric motors is made according to the resistant joint torques determined by running the dynamic analysis. One can import complete CAD assemblies, including all masses, inertias, joints, constraints, and tri-dimensional geometries, into the model block. The first step for executing a dynamic analysis is to resolve the Inverse Kinematics (IK) problem for the redundant robot. The proposed method for solving the inverse kinematic problem for this type of structure is based on a geometric approach and validated afterwards using SimScape Multibody. Solving the inverse kinematics problem is a mandatory step in the dynamic analysis of the robot, this is required to drive the robot on certain user-imposed trajectories. The dynamic model of the serial robot is necessary for the simulation of motion, analysis of the robot’s structure and design of optimal control algorithms.

Abstract In this paper, two mathematical models of the primary inverted pendulum are established based on the Simulink and the Simscape toolboxes of the MATLAB respectively. The inverted pendulum changes from the unstable state to the stable state after performing the state feedback control and the PID control method. Under these two control methods, the overshoot of the Simulink model is 57% and 80% smaller, and the adjustment time is 25% and 20% larger than that of the Simscape model. The control effect of the PID method in the two models is better than that of the state feedback method. The adjustment time of the pendulum rod is 40% and 37.5% smaller, and the overshoot is 82% and 61% smaller than that of state feedback control, respectively.

Due to operate the system, the multiple power point tracker (MPPT) technique is used to support PV system to operate at its maximum power. The way the MPPT algorithm works is by calculating the output of PV module, then compares it to battery voltage then fixes what is the optimum power that PV module can produce to charge the battery and converts it to the optimum voltage to get maximum current into battery. It can also supply power to a DC load, which is connected directly to the battery. MPPT is very useful in cloudy days. This paper deploys the use of MPPT technique within the stand-alone solar PV system by simulating the designed Simscape model. Two MPPT techniques, which are the incremental conductance and perturbation and observation (PO) have been chosen to be run as the system simulated. The parameters that have been observed are DC bus voltage, the PV power, the PV voltage, and the PV current, respectively. The results showed that the DC bus voltage raised and steady at the 377.3 V, the solar power increased to 2 kW, and the PV current decreased to approximately 7 A. The DC load is connected across the boost converter output. The solar PV system operates in both maximum power point tracking and de-rated voltage control modes. To track the maximum power point (MPP) of the solar PV, the two MPPT techniques incremental conductance and PO might have been chosen.

Abstract The present paper contains an analysis of the operation of the electric motor of an aerospace electromechanical servomechanism present on a test bench. Particularly, the description focuses on the electromagnetic phenomena of the three-phase stator circuit and the switching of the stator phases as a function of the applied control logic and rotor position. The activity was made possible through the construction and validation of a ‘digital twin’ physical model in the Simscape environment, which faithfully reproduces the behaviour of a High-Fidelity numeric reference model, built in the Simulink environment, perfectly representative of the electromechanical servomechanism. The recourse to the construction of a ‘digital twin’ physical model was necessary as it allows the study of non-linear phenomena that are the main cause of failures of electromechanical servomechanisms. Therefore, the analysis conducted will allow prognostics algorithms to be developed in order to predict potential failure conditions and avoid potential hazardous situations in the operating environment.

AbstractA single inverted pendulum on a cart (SIPC) is designed and modeled physically using SolidWorks. The model is then exported to the Simulink environment to form a Simscape model for simulation and test purposes. This type of modeling uses a physical grid tactic to model mechanical structures. It requires connection of the physical elements with physical signal converter to define the implicit system dynamics to be modeled. The integration between the SolidWorks and Simscape eliminates the need of deriving the mathematical model and provides a platform for the rapid controller design for the system. State feedback control scheme is proposed, designed, and tuned aiming to maintain the pendulum in the upright place while tracking the desired cart position. Several simulation cases are studied to prove the controller abilities. In order to examine the controller robustness, disturbance rejection and noise attenuation capabilities are also discovered.

Taking the analysis of unit step response and characteristic curves drawing of frequency response of second-order system for example,the design course of virtual experimental platform and the using method are illuminated in details. Furthermore, the accuracy of the running result from the platform is analyzed by using automatic control principle. The results show that the simulation experiment process at the virtual experiment platform is the same as actual process. It can improve the experiment efficiency and solve the problem of high cost and low efficiency while doing an experiment at the actual experiment platform.

Abstract In order to realize hardware-in-the-loop simulation of commonly used power electronic circuits, a method of joint simulation using Simcape and field programmable gate array (FPGA) is proposed. This article adopts a switch modeling method suitable for high-frequency characteristics, namely the switch function method. It effectively solves the problem of rigidity non-convergence in the modeling of the binary resistance method, as well as the transient error caused by the binary LC method when the system state is switched with the increase of the switching frequency, which reduces the simulation accuracy. Taking the single-phase full-bridge inverter circuit as an example, a Simscape model based on the state-space averaging method was established, and the HDL code was automatically generated using the Simscape HDL Workflow Advisor tool, and the hardware-in-the-loop simulation was completed with FPGA. Finally, the simulation results with Simulink comparison verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the method.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the accuracy of three state of charge (SOC) estimators of a rechargeable Li-ion SAFT battery based on two accurate Li-ion battery models, namely a linear RC equivalent electrical circuit (ECM) and a nonlinear Simscape generic model, developed in Part 1. The battery SOC of both Li-ion battery models is estimated using a linearized adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF), a nonlinear adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) and a nonlinear and non-Gaussian particle filter estimator (PFE). The result of MATLAB simulations shows the efficiency of all three SOC estimators, especially AEKF, followed in order of decreasing performance by AUKF and PFE. Besides, this result reveals a slight superiority of the SOC estimation accuracy when using the Simscape model for SOC estimator design. Hands-on workshops and projects are an effective way to provide meaningful and memorable STEM education. To promote practical acoustics and engineering knowledge, the Pennsylvania State University Acoustical Society of America student chapter hosted a series of workshops wherein students learned the basics of electroacoustic transduction, mechanical modeling, electronics design, and PCB routing. This educational effort was accomplished by sponsoring a three-way loudspeaker design project. Transduction topics were covered by optimizing the model of a ported woofer in MathWorks SimScape, using the recently developed Acoustical Domain for Simscape available from MATLAB central. Mechanical modeling of the three-way speaker cabinets to produce manufacturing drawings was covered in SolidWorks workshops. Finally, the basics of circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB routing were covered in DipTrace through the design of a stereo integrated amplifier with an active crossover that was built to power the loudspeaker. Details about the workshops and performance of the designed components will be presented.
