In this study aims to understand whether the sidewalk that should be used by pedestrians functions according to its actual function. In this study using interview methods and questionnaires. In this study the method used was the interview method or also called the interview where the interview is an event or process of interaction between the interviewer and also the person being asked where the results of the answers become a source of information. Questionnaire is one method of data collection that is used by asking a series of questions addressed to respondents to be answered. The research location is Jln William Iskandar, the sidewalk is right in front of the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. The results of a road pavement survey conducted by the State Islamic University of North Sumatra revealed that there were many violations of the function of road pavements committed by motorcyclists. Abstract: The more advance establishment of the country leads to the more developed economic progress. The economic activities require better supporting facilities and infrastructure. Market is one of infrastructure that can support economic activities. In addition, it requires a market location, it also requires a road to distribute the commodities in or out of the city. Roadway and sidewalk are supporting infrastructures that improve the economy in a country. One of market in Pekalongan city, Banjarsari Market’s was in fire. Then Banjarsari market was relocated in Patiunus Street. This research was conducted in Patiunus street, the sidewalk that was used for Banjarsari market relocation. The market relocation in the roadway and sidewalks can affect road functions and road users’ activities. Especially in the balancing interaction factor between the pedestrians and the vehicles, the safety factor of adequate space for pedestrians, the facilities offered a pleasurable experience on the sidewalk, the availability of public facilities unites, becomes supporting elements of the sidewalk. This research used the qualitative method and used three data collection techniques: direct observation, questionnaire, and documentation. The conclusion of this study is the existence of the Banjarsari market relocation on Jalan Patiunus affected the function of roads and sidewalks. By analyzing the result of the field survey and questionnaire to the road user and sidewalk users from Patiunus street, it can be concluded that the four standards for sidewalk (the balancing interaction between the pedestrians and the vehicles, safety factor, the facilities offered a pleasurable experience on the sidewalk and the availability of public facilities unites and becomes supporting elements of the sidewalk). Therefore, Patiunus street can have good functions for road user and sidewalk users.

As the population increases, resulting in high human mobility. However, high mobility is not matched by services for transportation facilities and infrastructure, especially sidewalks. One of the areas with existing sidewalk problems is the Kebayoran Baru area of South Jakarta. The problem that occurs is that the sidewalk is used as a place to street vendors, and is used as an illegal parking lot. The methodology of this research was carried out by conducting a geometric survey, measuring the volume and travel time of pedestrians to determine the level of service and distributing questionnaires as 80 respondents to pedestrians in search of the level of performance and importance of sidewalk facilities. This data processing uses Microsoft Excel and Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS). The results of the analysis carried out that the sidewalks do not meet the minimum standards according to regulations. From the measurement of the results of the volume and travel time of pedestrians, the level of service with category A is obtained, as well as the results of the questionnaire related to the level of comfort, security, and safety of pedestrians influenced by the presence of street vendors and illegal parking on sidewalks.

This paper aims to establish a relationship between people's perception and physical elements of sidewalks using the rough sets approach. In previous studies, the techniques used have been the conventional statistical methods and only a handful of studies used mo'dem artificial intelligence methods in analyzing the relationship between the physical elements and people's perception. In this study ten built enviromnent related students and ten non built enviromnent related students took part in an image preference survey of twenty sidewalk enviromnents. Their expressions were then analyzed using four-step rough sets analytical procedure. Finally the decisions arrived, that are the outputs of rough sets approach, were used to extract the enviable features of sidewalk enviromnents. We anticipate that these results will be useful for planners, urban designers and other professionals to make effective decisions in designing sidewalks.

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of pedestrian paths (sidewalks) in the Pontianak Selatan District, precisely on Jalan Ahmad Yani. The sidewalk as a pedestrian path is a space for pedestrians that functions as a means to protect pedestrians from the dangers that come from vehicles using the road. The method used is the survey method and questionnaire method. The data analysis method (Highway Capacity Manual, 1985) is used to obtain pedestrian characteristics.Analysis of survey data used the Likert Scale method to obtain the level of pedestrian comfort and safety based on respondents' perceptions. The results of calculating the effectiveness of the sidewalks on Jalan Ahmad Yani obtained for zones A, B, and C are 17.35 m2/person, 7.75 m2/person, and 30.39 m2/person. Based on the calculation of the pedestrian characteristics of the three road sections, the pedestrian path service level is obtained with standard A or LOS A.The results from respondents obtained 11 good categories and two suitable enough types based on the calculation of the percentage of comfort level categories. The level of data reliability reached 0.853 based on SPSS statistics 2016. The results of this study indicate that the pedestrian path (sidewalk) is an excellent facility for pedestrians to exercise and relax in Pontianak Selatan District.

Walking is an essential sustainable mode of transportation. Encouraging to increase walking trips can bring various social and economic benefits to our society. Since the policy paradigm has been shifting from car-oriented to pedestrian-oriented, interest in securing pedestrian rights and improving walking environments is increasing significantly. This study aims to examine factors affecting pedestrian satisfaction according to land use and street type. A pedestrian satisfaction survey was conducted in an industrial city with a mid-size population in the city of Changwon, South Korea. Based on the survey data from 500 respondents, factors affecting pedestrian satisfaction were analyzed by land use (commercial or residential areas) and street type (non-separated or separated sidewalks). The analysis results, using binary and ordered logit models, showed that the less illegal parking, the more pedestrian space, pedestrian guidance facility, and green space, the higher the pedestrian satisfaction. Factors positively affecting the satisfaction of pedestrian paths according to land use were physical environmental variables, such as the separated sidewalk variable. In commercial areas, pedestrian guidance facilities and street cleanliness were included as major influencing factors, implying differences in land use influencing factors. A common factor affecting the satisfaction of separated or non-separated sidewalk cases was also identified as the sufficiency of walking space. Therefore, the most urgent policy measure for improving pedestrian satisfaction for the city was to install a sidewalk or expand the pedestrian space. In the pedestrian-vehicle separation models, green space and cleanliness were included as significant variables, and in the non-separated models, variables of pedestrian guidance facilities and sidewalk conditions were included.

Since 2018, pedestrians in many U.S. cities have been sharing sidewalk space with dockless shared e-scooters. The introduction of e-scooters has received pushback from pedestrians. Complaints reported in the media include e-scooters blocking walkways and sidewalks when parked illegally as well as safety concerns from pedestrians who do not feel safe around moving e-scooters. However, little is known beyond a few initial studies on e-scooter parking and anecdotes about pedestrian perceptions of e-scooter safety. Our case study from Rosslyn, Virginia, helps shed light on these two issues. First, we conducted a survey of 181 e-scooter riders and non-riders asking about their perceived safety around riders of e-scooters and experiences of sidewalks blocked by e-scooters. We found highly divergent responses about safety and sidewalk blocking perceptions from riders and non-riders. Second, we conducted an observational study of 606 parked e-scooters along three mixed-use corridors in Rosslyn to investigate the relationship between the built environment and e-scooter parking. We found that 16% of 606 observed e-scooters were not parked properly and 6% (36 e-scooters) were blocking pedestrian right-of-way. Moreover, our survey showed that e-scooter trips in Rosslyn replaced trips otherwise taken by Uber, Lyft, or a taxi (39%), foot (33%), bicycle (12%), bus (7%), or car (7%).

A survey of 18 California cities indicated that approximately $70.7 million (se $11.1 million) was spent annually statewide due to conflicts between street tree root growth and sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and street pavement. The largest single expenditure was for sidewalk repair ($23 million, se $9.5 million), followed by curb and gutter repair ($11.8 million, se $2.6 million), and trip and fall payments and legal staff time ($10.1 million, se $2.2 million). Property owners paid 39% and 17% of tree-related sidewalk and curb and gutter repair costs, respectively. Substantial funds were invested to remove and replace trees in conflict with hardscape ($6.8 million, se $3.6 million), and for inspection and repair administration programs ($5.9 million, se $1.3 million). Root pruning ($2.5 million, se $2.0 million) and root barriers ($676,854, se $175,655) were the most important mitigation and prevention measures. Restricted planting space and the type of tree species selected were reported as the most important factors responsible for hardscape damage.

This study aimed at developing SBPCI (Sidewalk Block Pavement Condition Index) with sidewalk pavement condition survey data of Seoul city in order to attain a quantitative evaluation method of sidewalk pavement condition. The distress patterns of sidewalk pavement were classified into four groups of Crack/Loss, Roughness, Aging, and Corner Break. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) technique was employed on the basis of the raking process of 31 pavement managers in order to analyze the influence of the distress patterns on the sidewalk pavement condition. The AHP analysis result indicated the weight of pop out, roughness, surface abrasion, and corner break were 0.521, 0.244, 0.164, and 0.070, respectively, by distress type. A model equation was derived by using the sidewalk pavement condition data from 420 sections. The correlation analysis between the result of the model equation and distress type revealed that the correlation of corner break was low to be excluded from SBPCI model; while pop out, roughness, and surface abrasion were statistically significant to be used as three variables of the developed SBPCI model.

Rapid visual screening is a “sidewalk survey” approach that enabled users to classify surveyed buildings into two categories: those acceptable as to risk to life safety or those that may be seismically hazardous and should be evaluated in more detail by a design professional experienced in seismic design. The method generates a score, which results from a quick site inspection of the building, both inside as well as outside, or from a quick inspection of the architectural and structural drawings. The score is related to the degree to which the building is judged to deviate from current seismic requirements. A high score suggests that the building requires additional study by a professional engineer experienced in seismic design, and a low score indicates that the building is probably adequate. The score is separated into two components, one for the structure, and the other for non-structural components. The Rapid Visual Screening method is designed to be implemented without performing any structural calculations. The inspection, data collection and decision-making process typically occurs at the building site, and is expected to take couple of hours for a building, depending on its size. The screening is based on Code based Seismic Intensity, Building Type and Damageability Grade as observed in past earthquake. This is a procedure to identify if a particular building requires further evaluation for assessment of its seismic vulnerability, to assess the seismic damageability of the building and seismic rehabilitation needs and to identify simplified retrofitting requirements for the building where further evaluations are not considered necessary or not found feasible. In this complete project check how different type of building are gives the output result or score on applying the Rapid Visual Theory & what type of variation in score such as minimum value of score & maximum value of scores for a particular type of building.

This thesis proposes an alternative method of mine surveying in order to improve the safety and accuracy of primary survey network control in a narrow tunnel environment. It is argued that the traditional South African practice of establishing survey networks in the roof of a tunnel, although accurate, is time consuming and increases the risk exposure of survey crews. In the South African mining context Health and Safety legislation requires managers to take every precaution to ensure the health and safety of their employees. It is argued that current developments in survey technology can provide a safe and accurate alternative of establishing primary survey networks. A method of establishing a primary network in the sidewall of a tunnel was tested under controlled conditions and evaluated under real working conditions. It was found that the accuracy of such a sidewall survey network can meet the defined accuracy requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act, provided that specific geometric configurations are met and certain observation protocols are followed. A detailed risk analysis of the effect of external factors on the accuracy the network and the health and safety of workers was made. A standard practice was developed to mitigate the identified risks in the installation and maintenance of such a sidewall survey network. This thesis recommends that under specific conditions, a sidewall survey station network can provide first, a safe and accurate alternative to traditional mine survey networks and second, provide the required control for accurate setting-out surveys in a three-dimensional environment .

The 711-acre Mueller development is located just three miles northeast of downtown on the former site of the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. Planned as one of Austin’s major transit-oriented New Urbanist developments, Mueller contains a pattern of pedestrian and bike friendly streets to encourage a range of transportation options for residents and visitors. Mueller is 30% complete and provides housing and jobs to over 3000 residents and 3000 employees. This MDS seeks to understand how current residents, employees, and visitors use the bike lanes, sidewalks, and roads in the Mueller community. To evaluate the transportation infrastructure, the author designed and coded a custom Google Maps survey that asked residents to draw common routes, points of interest, and points of concern related to their transportation choices. The results of this study then influenced a future urban design of the undeveloped portion of Mueller.

This chapter sets Joseph Pulitzer's spectacular building for his paper, the New York World, against the moves uptown by the Herald and the Times that would begin the shift away from the nineteenth-century concentration on Park Row. Pulitzer's aim was to have the tallest building in the world and a shining beacon in New York City. At twenty-six stories and rising over three hundred feet from the sidewalk to the base of the lantern on top of the dome, the building achieved the height superiority and the notoriety that Pulitzer wanted. The chapter demonstrates how the taller structures signaled a new corporate presence in the city, as wealthy press barons with seemingly unlimited resources increasingly led the news industry. Publishers like Pulitzer built their offices on the uppermost floors from which they could survey the city, their readers, and their competitors.

From the urban point of view, walkability is the mode of transport where the highest level of contact with the urban environment occurs and provides the most intense exchange between its agents. For this reason, it produces the greatest interaction with city life, promoting an almost organic relationship. Thus, primarily the walk of so repeated and automated is little reflected as an act in itself and can be held responsible for the reduced importance given to it in the treatment of urban space in Brazilian cities. And this occurs both in its understanding as a circulation system, as in its planning and formal spatial repercussion, responsible for generating an outline of urban design. Thus, commuting on foot, along with those who practice it, are systematically relegated by urban technology to a secondary level, where the understanding that adequate treatment of sidewalks and crossings predominates constitutes a kind of urban privilege, a luxury wasted on a second-class user. In this context, the research sought to understand the quality of the walkability and accessibility environment in the central region ofBrasília - the Southern Commercial Sector (SCS), considering the microscale (or street scale), as well as a survey of the physical system for accessibility : public facilities / urban barriers, urban furniture, sidewalks and shelters.

In addition to individual and social barriers to physical activity (PA), people with impairments also face a physical or built environment that is often not conducive to PA. The purpose of this chapter is to survey the most common, and some idiosyncratic, environmental barriers to PA and protections intended via the Americans with Disabilities Act. While opportunity barriers are often under people’s control, other barriers such as inclement weather are outside of human control. However, sidewalks and wheelchair ramps that are not shoveled free of snow are examples of where uncontrollable and controllable barriers merge. Other examples include transportation barriers: Often entrances to public transportation are inaccessible, and waiting for public transportation and carrying equipment on public transportation are seen as barriers to PA. Ramps too steep for wheelchairs, bathroom and locker room doors too narrow for wheelchairs, no grab bars in showers, lack of lifts into a pool, and pools that are too cold also make it hard for people to use exercise facilities. The nasolabial flap is primarily used for nasal reconstruction and most frequently for full-thickness alar reconstruction due to the tissue’s location, texture, color, and bulk. The inferiorly based flap is most often used for alar reconstruction, while the superiorly based flap may also be used for nasal sidewall as well as alar reconstruction. Regardless of whether the flap will be superiorly or inferiorly based, the critical component of the patient marking is placement of the medial incision in the nasolabial or nasofacial crease. In the younger patient, consideration must be given to the donor site scar.

St. Matthew’s Parish was created in the 1790s to accommodate the increased population with the migration of Loyalist refugees to the Bahamas. Several new cemeteries were also established but these were not formally consecrated until 1826, shortly after a bishop was appointed for the Anglican Diocese of Jamaica, which included the Bahamas. The Northern Burial Ground was especially for blacks, enslaved and free. Based on the documentation of the consecration, it seemed that the Northern Burial Ground was only established in the 1790s. Loyalist immigrants acted to impose more strict code of racial segregation in the colony than had existed prior to their arrival. The Northern Burial Ground is on the main road leading into the town so the African-derived grave treatments in this cemetery served as a public declaration of the cultural affiliation of this community. By the late nineteenth century the cemetery was surrounded by a low wall topped with a wooden fence that would have shielded the articles on graves from passersby. The cemetery was used until the early 1900s. Hurricane storm surges covered it in the 1920s, and in the 1930s a sidewalk was built through the site but there was no public protest at this destruction.

Before he took off, signed himself out as the shifts were changing, he slipped this message under my office door: Dogs no longer bark at me. In my handbook, this state is referred to as bliss. But my time here is short. I’m aging faster now, burning up along the primitive circuitry. Already older than my mother and father put together, and with so much work left for me to do.

Abstract Keeping sidewalks clean and tidy is a continuously tough task in modern urban environment, traditional solution of cleaning sidewalk is sanitation workers’ manual sweeping. However, manual work is inefficient, laboring intensive and dirty. Main pollutants on the urban sidewalks are simple litter, they consist of recyclable waste such as paper, cardboard and metal cans, and non-recyclable waste like foam and food residue. Thus, the litter on sidewalks can be cleaned, collected and sorted by robots. This paper will discuss the entire design process of a novel litter collection mobile robot for urban sidewalks, including robot structure, drive system, litter collection mechanisms, and stress analysis and motion simulation. This robot can patrol on the sidewalks in urban environment while collecting and sorting litter along the way. Currently, for cleaning the road on urban street, motor sweeper vehicles are used. There are no motorized vehicles used to clean the sidewalks. Therefore, this robotic approach will fill the gap, avoiding inefficient and overwhelmed manual work. The robot is designed to adapt various terrains of sidewalks such as brick pavements, cement sidewalks, and asphalt sidewalks. The size of the robot is designed to fit most of sidewalks according to research of sidewalk standards. The litter collection robot consists of a robust chassis, a driving system, a litter collection system, a sensor system for obstacles avoiding, a navigation system for autonomous control and a vision system for litter sorting. For chassis, based on research on sidewalk size standard, its width is designed less than 80 cm to fit inside the sidewalk and at the same time leave enough space for pedestrians passing robot and conducting normal activities. Its height is designed more than 80cm (including robot arm) to make sure it can be noticed by pedestrians, which will avoid potential safety hazard to pedestrians. The weight of the robot is designed to be light weighted to make the robot easy to carry. Moreover, handles are designed in its structure for the convenience of worker’s carrying. For driving system, a two-wheel driving system is designed to adapt various sidewalks. For litter collection system, a robotic arm with four-finger grippers is designed to pick up litter on the sidewalk, and two standard bins are used to contain recyclable and non-recyclable litter separately. Vision system is designed to detect presence and type of litter, so litter will be placed to different bins accordingly. Navigation system is included to enable the robot patrol along the pre-designed path. By applying abovementioned design, this litter collection robot provides a new autonomous approach for urban sanitation work in collecting and sorting litter on sidewalk.

The correct specification and application of the materials not only guarantees the accessibility of this space, but also favors and enhances the urban mobility of pedestrians, the walkability, much defended by several professionals of urbanism. Note the immense "invasion" of public space, making life on sidewalkssomething stimulating and interesting, by the enormous confusion implanted: kiosks, street vendors / street vendors, cars parked in a forbidden place and sometimes on the sidewalks, barbecues, holes, steps, obstacles, furniture and urban equipment very poorly located,results of the complete dysfunction ofthis space. The problem observed reflects the current dismay of people and public authorities in relation to accessibility, mobility and safety of people, especially those with reduced mobility,disabled or not. That said, this work objectives tofind a floor of easy installation and low cost that meets the principles of universalaccessibility, urban aesthetics and enhances the mobility of people in the city with autonomy and security. Based on an observational and photographic study of the sidewalks of the Pelinca neighborhood, together with a technical survey of existing sidewalks,the information obtained will be compared with the guidelines contained in the accessibility and urban mobility legislation in force, whether at the municipal, state and federal levels. The data extracted in the evaluation of existing floors, will provide subsidies, for the identification of a new type of pavement, contributing to the Public Power in the elaborationof booklets for the implementation and or adoption of guiding measures for the construction and reformulation of sidewalks, in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes

Pedestrian roads in the Czech Republic are currently designed following the valid Czech technical standard CSN 73 6110 entitled "Design of local roads". According to this standard, the width of sidewalks is designed according to the speed, intensity, and current density of pedestrians, ie in a very similar way to the design of roads for motor vehicles. However, the vast majority of small towns do not have processed field measurements that determine the relevant values, so they only propose the minimum width of sidewalks required by the standard (1.5 m), which is inappropriate in terms of the quality of public space. Therefore, the project SVV202104 entitled "Requirements and categorization of the width of pedestrian roads in the context of the type of public space" was created, which aims to develop a simpler methodology for determining the minimum width of sidewalks in different types of public space. The paper builds on two already published texts. The first one dealt with the survey of the legislative framework and available approaches of individual authors, which solve the requirements for the width of pedestrian roads, and the second with the categorization of the public space of small towns. This paper describes the course of field measurements in nine small towns, which was carried out within SVV202104. It also deals with the evaluation of these measurements.

Abstract This work reports the results of two Vertical Seismic Profiles (VSP) in deep-water deviated wells in Brazil, acquired using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) as part of a hybrid wireline cable. DAS is an efficient alternative to acquire VSP surveys, especially in costly offshore environments (Hartog, 2017; Martinez et al., 2018). DAS embedded in hybrid optical-electrical cables, which utilizes the wireline as seismic recording element and so it leverages any logging intervention in a well to become a seismic run. A Zero-offset or rig-source VSP survey acquired with this technology can be recorded in matter of minutes, as opposed to it taking over 24hrs to record similar data with conventional tools (i.e., geophones). DAS seismic profiles are acquired while maintaining the logging cable stationary, so that a number of shots of the seismic source are taken to form a stack. Two DAS VSP jobs are described herein. One was acquired while lowering a sonic-caliper logging tool, while another job was acquired during a sidewall coring tool. Both jobs were acquired in less than 30 minutes and 50 shots to produce a stack. Excellent quality DAS data was recorded in both wells. In one of the wells, a conventional checkshot with sparse spatial sampling was recorded to compare velocity profiles against DAS. In both cases traditional well seismic products such as time-depth pairs, interval velocities, sonic calibration, corridor stack and migrated image and Q factor when applicable were obtained. For this reason, DAS can be an effective replacement of VSP acquired with traditional geophone methods in certain situations. The jobs here were the first deep-water, deep-target wells acquired successfully in the world with the technology of DAS in hybrid wireline cable. There were significant cost savings associated to the VSP operations using DAS, that came from reducing the rig time needed for their acquisition. A direct benefit of this technology is the reduction of the environmental footprint by both lowering noise emissions that disrupt marine ecosystems and, also carbon emissions that can be cut more than 90% over traditional VSP acquisition methods.

Leading edge cooling cavities in modern gas turbine blades play an important role in maintaining the leading edge temperature at levels consistent with airfoil design life. These cavities often have a complex cross-sectional shape to be compatible with the external contour of the blade at the leading edge. A survey of many existing geometries show that, for analytical as well as experimental analyses, such cavities can be simplified in shape by a four-sided polygon with one curved side similar to the leading edge curvature, a rectangle with one semi-circular side (often the smaller side) or a trapezoid, the smaller base of which is replaced by a semicircle. Furthermore, to enhance the heat transfer coefficient in these cavities, they are mostly roughened on three sides with ribs of different geometries. Experimental data on friction factors and heat transfer coefficients in such cavities are rare if not nonexistent. A liquid crystal technique was used in this experimental investigation to measure heat transfer coefficients in six test sections representing the leading-edge cooling cavities. Straight as well as tapered ribs were configured on the two opposite sidewalls in a staggered arrangement with angles of attack to the mainstream flow, α, of 60° and 90°. The ribs on the curved surface were of constant cross section with an angle of attack 90° to the flow. Heat transfer measurements were performed on the straight sidewalls as well as on the round surface adjacent to the blade leading edge. Effects such as rib angle of attack to the mainstream flow and constant versus tapered rib cross-sectional areas were also investigated. Nusselt numbers, friction factors and thermal performances are reported for nine rib geometries in six test sections.

Abstract A new entry edge guide control system for cold mills was designed using a dual-mode control system. One control loop regulated the cylinder pressure to prevent machine damage due to pressure surge while the other loop provided strip edge guide position control. The target control level was ±1.59mm accuracy for a maximum operating strip speed with coil sidewall variances of ±12.5mm/sec. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the control system using the state space design method. The control system features two PID controllers, two hydraulic proportional valves, and a digital edge sensor. The PID tuning constants and the hydraulic proportional valves were specified by simulation results considering system response and signal noise. Data from 35 coils was used to investigate control performance. The results show that the average standard error is entirely acceptable. The majority of the coils are expected to have tracking errors less than the required accuracy.
