Abstract Context.—Abbreviations are used frequently in pathology reports and medical records. Efforts to identify and organize free-text concepts must correctly interpret medical abbreviations. During the past decade, the author has collected more than 12 000 medical abbreviations, concentrating on terms used or interpreted by pathologists. Objective.—The purpose of the study is to provide readers with a listing of abbreviations. The listing of abbreviations is reviewed for the purpose of determining the variety of ways that long forms are shortened. Design.—Abbreviations fell into different classes. These classes seemed amenable to distinct algorithmic approaches to their correct expansions. A discussion of these abbreviation classes was included to assist informaticians who are searching for ways to write software that expands abbreviations found in medical text. Classes were separated by the algorithmic approaches that could be used to map abbreviations to their correct expansions. A Perl implementation was developed to automatically match expansions with Unified Medical Language System concepts. Measurements.—The abbreviation list contained 12 097 terms; 5772 abbreviations had unique expansions. There were 6325 polysemous abbreviation/expansion pairs. The expansions of 8599 abbreviations mapped to Unified Medical Language System concepts. Three hundred twenty-four abbreviations could be confused with unabbreviated words. Two hundred thirteen abbreviations had different expansions depending on whether the American or the British spellings were used. Nine hundred seventy abbreviations ended in the letter “s.” Results.—There were 6 nonexclusive groups of abbreviations classed by expansion algorithm, as follows: (1) ephemeral; (2) hyponymous; (3) monosemous; (4) polysemous; (5) masqueraders of common words; and (6) fatal (abbreviations whose incorrect expansions could easily result in clinical errors). Conclusion.—Collecting and classifying abbreviations creates a logical approach to the development of class-specific algorithms designed to expand abbreviations. Анотація:

Currently, there are many options for classifying investments in the scientific community, but almost all authors carry out the classification by terms. At the same time, scientists do not have a single approach to classification by time attribute. In addition, the proposed classification options (short-term, long-term, medium-term), as well as the terms of certain investments themselves, are usually not justified anywhere and are presented as a given. According to the author, such an arbitrary and unjustified classification does not meet the requirements of scientific classification. In addition, different approaches and options for classifying investments by terms in investment textbooks do not contribute to a unified collection, analysis, accounting and reporting in the field of investment, as well as the unification of financial documents in accordance with international standards, but on the contrary, will contribute to the ambiguity of law enforcement practice. Based on the options for classifying investments by terms proposed by the scientific community, an analysis of regulatory acts, as well as international standards in the field of finance and accounting, the author comes to the conclusion that it is advisable to use a single classification by investment period for short-term (up to one year) and long-term (over one year), and fixing such a classification in a regulatory document.

Based on the collected material, the article reviews the aspects of the appearance of Lithuanian anatomical terms. Anatomical terms, like terms in general, must be short and informative. The scientific-technical term must be accurate, short, and easy to use so that it can be used as a constituent of a new term. Traditional Latin terminology, in some cases, of course, is more precise than Lithuanian: the same thing in Lithuanian dialects has several or even dozens of names. However, the majority of medical terms are composite terms. Composite terms are most productive. Lithuanian terminology has been developed since the last decades of the 19th century. The latest Lithuanian-Latin Dictionary of Medical Terms by Vytautas Astrauskas, Stasys Biziulevičius, Salezijus Pavilonis, Adomas Vaitilavičius, and Antanas Vileišis was issued in 1980. The terms of anatomy are given according to the Paris Anatomical Nomenclature with the amendments of New York (1960) and Wiesbaden (1965). Non-relevant terms were rejected. The terms created from scientists’ surnames as well as the names of proprietary and branded medications, were also not included. The terms of histology and embryology are presented in accordance with the international nomenclature approved at the International Congress on Anatomy held in Leningrad in 1970. The dictionary has contributed to the process of purification, standardization, and different development of written Lithuanian language.

AbstractWe consider fine hierarchies in recursion theory, descriptive set theory, logic and complexity theory. The main results state that the sets of values of different Boolean terms coincide with the levels of suitable fine hierarchies. This gives new short descriptions of these hierarchies and shows that collections of sets of values of Boolean terms are almost well ordered by inclusion. For the sake of completeness we mention also some earlier results demonstrating the usefulness of fine hierarchies.

Medical terminology has an extensive and rich history in Latin and Greek languages. When Romans conquered Greece, the knowledge and language of both cultures merged, resulting in new medical concepts regarding disease treatment and containment. Medical records were chronicled by hand, creating medical terms and books. Although medical terms have been drawn from many languages, a large majority originate from Greek and Latin. Terms of Greek origin occur mainly in clinical terminology, while Latin terms make up the majority of anatomical terminology. Another reason for a large number of Greek medical terms is that the Greek language is quite suitable for building compound words. The article discusses the current state of anatomical terminology in Lithuania. The history of the Lithuanian nomenclature of anatomy dates back several centuries, during which the most frequently used Lithuanian anatomical terms were gradually developed. Every time, writing and publishing textbooks, methodological aids, and other anatomy books in the Lithuanian language, the authors interpreted various Latin anatomy terms in their own way and introduced new equivalents in the Lithuanian language. However, they often did not agree on the translation of various Latin terms into Lithuanian and their application to define various structures. The development and perfection of medical terminology is a long process. The most significant contribution in regulating Lithuanian anatomical terminology was made by Jurgis Žilinskas. The terms that we currently use can be found in his textbooks “Osteologija ir syndesmologija” (“Osteology and syndesmology”) (1932) and “Splanchnologija” (“Splanchnology”) (1934) (Litevkiene, Korosteliova 2012, 208). He initiated term regulation in his first textbook, “Lectures of Neurology” (1923), containing only Latin terms, well-formed according to Baseler’s nomenclature. The nomenclature of anatomy compiled by him was applied in other anatomy textbooks and the Dictionary of Medical Terms.

This paper analyzes the effect of terms of trade on economic growth of Pakistan considering annual time series data from 1980 to 2013. This study opted autoregressive distributed lag model for purpose of analyzing short- and long-run relationship. The results reveal significant negative long-run and short-run effects of terms of trade on economic growth. The analyses also indicate significant positive long-run and short-run effects of labour on economic growth. Further, capital stock is influencing positively the economic growth in long run only. We suggest that economic policies may be implemented to deteriorate terms of trade which will further enhance the economic growth of Pakistan. JEL: F13, F43

This review is dedicated to some modern applications of the remarkable paper written in 1918 by E. Noether. On a single paper, Noether discovered the crucial relation between symmetries and conserved charges as well as the impact of gauge symmetries on the equations of motion. Almost a century has gone since the publication of this work and its applications have permeated modern physics. Our focus will be on some examples that have appeared recently in the literature. This review aims at students, not researchers. The main three topics discussed are (i) global symmetries and conserved charges (ii) local symmetries and gauge structure of a theory (iii) boundary conditions and algebra of asymptotic symmetries. All three topics are discussed through examples.

Анотація:

Sharma’s singularity-free analytical theory for the short-term orbital motion of satellites in terms of KS elements in closed form in eccentricity with Earth’s zonal harmonic term J2, is improved by using King-Hele’s expression for the radial distance ‘r’ which includes the effect of J2, and is suitable for low eccentricity orbits. Numerical experimentation with four test cases with perigee altitude of 200 km and eccentricity varying from 0.01 to 0.3 for different inclinations is carried out. It is found that the orbital elements computed with the analytical expressions in a single step during half a revolution match very well with numerically integrated values and show significant improvement over the earlier theory. The solution can be effectively used for computation of mean elements for near-Earth orbits, where the short-term orbit perturbations due to J2 play most important role. The theory will be very useful in computing the state vectors during the coast phase of rocket trajectories and flight algorithms for on-board implementation.

This study aims to determine the effect of liquidity, inflation, and interest rates on the return of State Retail Sukuk (SUKRI) both in the short term and in the long term. Sampling in this study used a purposive sampling method by considering that the maturity of the series is the most recent and can be obtained in the secondary market and the data sources obtained from the monthly statistical reports of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (idx.go.id), the official website of Bank Indonesia (bi.go.id), as well as through a special request to The Indonesia Capital Market Institute (TICMI). Analysis of the data used in this study is a time series, namely research that is measured over a certain period of time. The period data used was in March 2017 on the grounds that the 009 Retail Sukuk as the object of this study were published in that month and ended in March 2020. The method used in this study is ARDL-ECM after going through the stationarity test and cointegration test. The results show that in the long term only the BI rate variable has a significant positive effect on Sukuk Returns, while in the short term only the Liquidity variable has a significant effect on Sukuk Returns. On the other hand, the inflation variable is known to have no significant effect on the Sukuk Returns in the long and short term. This research can be a reference for investors to make decisions in choosing SUKRI as their investment portfolio, as well as a consideration for the government in regulating risk management policies and determining the results offered to SUKRI which will be issued for subsequent series.

The paper presents the analysis of colour perception and its interpretation in psychology and symbolism; it highlights colour properties and the approaches to colour studies largely in linguistics. One of the features of colours is their ability to express human emotions and feelings, either positive or negative (verbally/ nonverbally), and to create certain atmosphere in the situation abound in colours. Shades of colours can be regarded as a lexico-semantic group formed by adjectives and nouns, which can be simple, derived, and compound words. Short texts include many colour terms expressing such colour properties, as hue, saturation, tone, lightness, intensity; each of them contributes to decoding of some culture-specific features hidden in Sudden fiction. The analysis of Sudden fiction shows that short stories have specific composition, where colour terms perform different functions. Descriptive functions are mainly connected with focal colours and identify objects’ properties. Other functions, such as character-generating, associative, metaphoric, symbolic, semiotic, and culture specific are more complicated. Their identification implies additional knowledge of cultural, social, and historical planes.

In this paper, we examine how methods for evaluating corpora in terms of technical terms can be used for characterising technical documents used as textual materials in translation training in a translation education setup. Technical documents are one of the standard types of textual materials used in translation training courses, and choosing suitable materials for learners is an important issue. In technical documents, technical terms play an essential role. Assessing how terms are used in these documents, therefore, would help translation teachers to choose relevant documents as training materials. As corpus-characterisation methods, we used self-referring measurement of the occurrence of terminology and measurement of the characteristic semantic scale of terms. To examine the practical applicability of these methods to assessing technical documents, we prepared a total of 12 short English texts from the six domains of law, medicine, politics, physics, technology and philosophy (two texts were chosen from each domain), whose lengths ranged from 300 to 1,150 words. We manually extracted terms from each text, and using those terms, we evaluated the nature and status of the textual materials. The analysis shows that even for short texts, the corpus-characterisation methods we provide useful insights into assessing textual materials.

Many of these are French (or German) words that an English rendering may not fully explicate. Also, they cannot be fully understood outside the context in which they are used, which is a necessary limitation on books about Theory, necessary though these are for beginners. (Wittgenstein famously said that one should not ask for the meaning of a term but look for the use.)

Анотація:

This study investigates the effect of terms of trade (TOT) on the economic growth of China over the period 1980–2013. Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model proposed by Pesaran, Shin, and Smith (2001, Journal of Applied Econometrics, 16(3), pp. 289–326) is applied for examining the short-run and long-run associations. The causality analysis between variables is analyzed by using Granger causality test and variance decomposition test. The ARDL model reveals that TOT significantly and adversely affect economic growth in the short run as well as in the long run. The results also imply positive short-run and long-run effect of labor and capital on the economic growth of China. The Granger causality results reveal significant bidirectional causal relationship between economic growth and capital, and between capital and labor force. The results show unidirectional causality from TOT to labor force. The variance decomposition results show that most of the innovation in economic growth is explained by its own innovation, while other variables have very small contributions to its innovations. The notable findings of the study suggest that TOT deterioration is relatively important for enhancing the economic growth of China.

AbstractThis paper discusses the short-period terms of nutation which are included in the recent theories of nutation for a rigid Earth. We argue that these terms should be expressed as terrestrial perturbations, that is as polar motion, and describe how such a transformation can be accomplished in practice. Based on the available rigid-Earth amplitudes, we estimate this lunisolar effect in polar motion for an elastic Earth with liquid core, and compare it to the oceanic and atmospheric perturbations at similar frequencies.

Solar renewable energy (SRE) applications are substantial in eradicating the rising global energy shortages and reversing the approaching environmental apocalypse. Hence, effective solar irradiance forecasting models are crucial in utilizing SRE efficiently. This paper introduces a partially amended hybrid model (PAHM) by the implementation of a new algorithm. The algorithm innovatively utilizes bi-directional gated unit (Bi-GRU), autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and naive decomposition models to predict solar irradiance in 5-min and 60-min intervals. Meanwhile, the models’ generalizability strengths would be tested under an 11-fold cross-validation and are further classified according to their computational costs. The dataset consists of 32 months’ solar irradiance and weather conditions records. A fundamental result of this study was that the single models (Bi-GRU and ARIMA) outperformed the hybrid models (PAHM, classical hybrid model) in the 5-min predictions, negating the assumptions that hybrid models oust single models in every time interval. PAHM provided the highest accuracy level in the 60-min predictions and improved the accuracy levels of the classical hybrid model by 5%, on average. This article attempts to study the inter-institutional dimension of the practical implementation of the subsidiarity principle in the EU legislative process. The main research question is whether the subsidiarity principle could be a real communicative tool in the EU’s multi-level regulation policy used to seek consensus between EU institutions and national parliaments on the justification of an appropriate level for EU actions (subsidiarity justification). The short answer is ‘yes’. Through the content analysis of the published documents and with the help of the theory of deliberation, the author argues for a subsidiarity justification procedure occurring at the beginning of each instance of the EU legislative process to provide an inter-institutional setting to move away from confirming (one-way) to deliberative (two-way) reasoning over the issue of potential subsidiarity violation in the EU legislative process.

The harmonisation of consumer law in Europe has been an important objective within the EU. Efforts have focused not only on improving the functioning of the internal market, but also on securing a high level of consumer protection in the Member States. With regard to consumer contracts, the Unfair Contract Terms Directive has come to play a key role, not least due to the case law of the European Court of Justice in this area in recent years. This article examines the need for an unfairness test of standard contracts and argues that the directive can be expanded to also include individually negotiated contract terms, and terms that relate to the main subject matter of the contract, the adequacy of the price, and changed circumstances. Such amendments would result in a greater correspondence between EU law and Swedish and Nordic law. Although full harmonisation is not possible in the short term, I will argue that a revision should point in this direction. However, I will begin my account with a presentation of the directive and how it has been implemented in Swedish law.

It was not until the last decade that missiologists placed the short-term missions (STM) movement at the center of their research. As the initial wave of STM scholarship surfaced, research centered on measuring the impact of STM on participants. Later, attention shifted to unraveling the impact upon the host community. More recently, with the exponential growth of partnerships between congregations in the Global North and the South, researchers have focused on analyzing the prevalent dynamics and patterns of relationships that involve STM teams. This article unravels the impact of STM in terms of its contributions and challenges to the global missionary enterprise and describes emerging patterns, such as reverse STM and multicultural STM teams.

Abstract Extended logistic regression has been shown to be a method well suited to calibrating precipitation forecasts from medium-range ensemble prediction systems. The extension of the logistic regression unifies the separate predictive equations for each threshold, introducing the predictive threshold as part of the predictors. Mutually consistent probabilities and a reduction in the total number of regression parameters to be evaluated are part of the benefits of the extended approach. However, considering the predictive threshold as the only “unification” predictor constrains the regression parameters associated with the primary predictors to be constant with the threshold. To alleviate the rigidity of the extended scheme, interaction terms are introduced in the unified predictive equation. Within the framework of the convection-permitting German-focused Consortium for Small-Scale Modeling ensemble prediction system (COSMO-DE-EPS), it is shown that extended logistic regression, applied to short-range precipitation forecasts with the ensemble mean as the primary predictor, improves the performance of the system. Interaction effects are first illustrated through the analysis of regression parameters and then the positive impact on the calibrated forecasts of the new extended logistic regression scheme, including interaction terms, is shown using quantitative and qualitative measures of reliability and sharpness.

Анотація:

The article considers Denys Lukiyanovich's short story “White Daffodils Withered” in terms of its genre and style specifics, motives, image system. The purpose of the research is to reveal the significance of the work for understanding the peculiarities of the literary process of the early twentieth century. The urgency of the investigation is due to the fact that the work “White Daffodils Withered” is not studied at all and is not involved in the literary context. This little-known text was first analyzed in terms of the peculiarities of combining in the author's creative style features of several trends, including Impressionism, Expressionism and Naturalism with their inherent stylistic markers, which is a novelty of the study. It is also compared with those samples of Ukrainian prose of the XIX-XX centuries, which have similar artistic features and are close in theme. Research methods. The article is based on the use of a systematic approach to the object of study. This approach involves the use of traditional descriptive method and its key techniques: observation, interpretation and generalization (to clarify the originality of the author's style of D. Lukiyanovich, its connection with the code of contemporary literature). Also, in order to compare D. Lukiyanovych's artistic sample with other materials (scientific and artistic), the method of contextual-interpretive analysis is used: thanks to him the status of D. Lukiyanovych's work is established in relation to other artistic samples, its place in sociocultural context, not to mention author's ideas, motives and goals, general content of questions etc. Conclusions. It is concluded that in terms of genre specifics, this work is close to a short story, namely “mood short story”, it is an original manifestation of the writer's creative style, which in this case is the syncretism of stylistic, genre and generic features.

Translating a literary work from different culture, some problems will emerge, especially related to culture-specific terms since two different languages are certainly have two different cultures. We have to understand that literary work is not just a common writing work, but also contains culture, tradition and people’s daily life especially in ecology and material culture (artefacts). There are three problems in this study: 1) cultural terms related to ecology and material culture (artefacts) in the short story; 2) semantic features of the cultural terms; and 3) translation strategies applied by two translators when translating the cultural terms of the same short story by Gde Aryantha Soethama entitled Seekor Ayam Panggang which is translated by two different translators; Jeanette Lingard and Vern Cork. The theories applied in this study were theories of cultural aspects (Newmark, 1988:95), theories of semantic features as proposed by Larson (1984) and Yule (1985/2010), and theory of translation strategies by Pedersen (2005) of Extralinguistic Culture-bound References. The collected data were analyzed comparatively. From the discussion of eight cultural terms related to ecology and material culture (artefacts) and their sixteen translations, it is discovered that some of the features were not carried out by the translations. Considering these two languages have different culture, it is inevitable to miss some components in the semantic features and the decision of using more target language-oriented strategies is part of the way to bridge the differences between culture.

Entanglement entropy in local quantum field theories is typically ultraviolet divergent due to short distance effects in the neighborhood of the entangling region. In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we show that surface terms in general relativity are able to capture this entanglement entropy. In particular, we demonstrate that for 1 + 1-dimensional (1 + 1d) conformal field theories (CFTs) at finite temperature whose gravity dual is Banados–Teitelboim–Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, the Gibbons–Hawking–York term precisely reproduces the entanglement entropy which can be computed independently in the field theory.

Frotteurism / frotteuristic disorder seems to be a quite rare paraphylic disorder. This comes from a relatively low prevalence (variation in the literature on this matter) and especially by the lack of data on it in the literature. Interestingly, DSM-III did not include Frotteurism in the 8 paraphiles listed with criteria for a diagnostis. Frotteurism first appeared in DSM-III-R. The frotteuristic disorder is included in DSM 5. The use and meaning of the word frotteurism in sexual terms comes from a French psychiatrist Valentin Magnan in 1890. He described men doing something that he called rubbing - rubbing their penis by women's back without them noticing. Анотація:

This paper analyzes two case studies of short-term medical missions to Latin America. Its conclusions suggest that when such projects are evaluated in terms of their impact upon the health status of the local population or health care delivery systems, they are found to have insignificant and even negative consequences. The shortcomings of these short-term efforts reflect the cultural assumptions that inform their design and implementation, rather than local health realities. Recommendations are suggested to increase the effectiveness of these missions in terms of the health needs of local populations.

This study compared the effects of shading in individual branch orders 2 and 3 on the needle survival, growth, and reproduction of five categories of short shoots of the proximal part of wild Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica (Endl.) G. Manetti ex Carrière). The sun exposure did not affect the number of short shoots in the two branch orders, whereas light compared to shade only stimulates the unbranched short shoot elongation of the branch order 3. The impact of shade exposure compared to sun on the loss of needles depends on the order of branching; it is weak to order 2 and increases to higher order. This effect in the branch order 3 is achieved by a significant decrease of the fallen leaf number in the unbranched short shoot SSnr and the short shoot SS/T worn by Twigs while in the branch order 2 only short shoot SS (nr + r) loses significantly few needles. In terms of short shoot extension and needle loss, the SS/T of the branch order 3 behaves in the same way as the SS (nr + r) of the branch order 2. The shadow compared to sunlit only decreases significantly the production of pollen strobili of the branch order 2. Close relationships between short shoot extension, leaf life span, and pollen strobili production of axillary products in the proximal part of C. atlantica crown were found.

Abstract In his latest book, Frank Ankersmit proposes an original theory of historical representation. In this review I focus on what I take to be his most important semantic points with respect to representation, meaning, truth, and reference. First, I provide a short summary of the book. Second, I explore his semantics in terms of aspects and compare it with a different account inspired by the Fregean notion of mode of presentation. As my examination shows, Ankersmit’s analysis faces the problem of “loosing indirectness” and, moreover, there seems to exist an alternative and plausible view that does not suffer from this problem. Finally, I conclude with a couple of comments on the Copernican Revolution advocated in the book.
