Abstract This research contributes to the small but growing body of scholarship examining non-fatal shooting cases. This study is particularly important considering the recent increase in the number of shooting incidents in the USA, and the fact that there are often many more non-fatal shooting cases than fatal outcomes. The Buffalo Police Department developed a specific investigative unit focusing exclusively on non-fatal shootings with the expectation that this would allow one group of detectives to focus on all homicides, while the other group focused exclusively on non-fatal shootings. Data from the Buffalo Police Department included both fatal and non-fatal shooting incidents, and an interrupted time series analysis was used to determine if there was an increase in the number of cases cleared by arrest. Results indicated that the implementation of the specific investigative unit did not influence clearances for non-fatal shootings. Furthermore, contrary to expectations, the numbers of clearances for homicides in the post-intervention period were significantly lower than those in the pre-intervention period. Two conclusions are offered. First, the non-fatal shooting unit was not structured in a way that mimicked a homicide unit, thus lacking the resources to clear non-fatal shooting cases. Secondly, separating investigative units created a ‘silo effect’ where the units may not have communicated enough on similar incidents.

Purpose: Determination of mental status of the rifle shooters during the shooting performance is critical for the development of mental training programs according to their skill levels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychophysiological differences of expert and novice rifle shooters. Material: Fourteen expert (age: 28.08±9.12 years, height: 176.12±4.24 cm, weight: 73.56±5.28 kg) and twenty novice shooters (age: 21.08±3.12 years, height: 177.42±3.74 cm, and weight: 71.56±3.57 kg) participated in the current study. The participants performed five shootings from a distance of 10m. The averages of each shooter’s five shooting scores, values of attention and meditation, and heart rate between 5-sec before shooting and shooting moment were obtained. Results: It was determined that shooting scores (10.02 ±0.49 vs. 7.6±2.86, p<0.01, respectively) and meditation level (71.50±21.05 vs. 52.93±20.54, p<0.05, respectively) were significantly higher in the experts while attention level (73.63±21.11 vs. 59.76±21.26, p<0.05, respectively), and heart rate (105.34±12.12 vs. 98.67±7,12 bpm, p<0.05, respectively) were found higher in the novices. Conclusions: The novices and experts present different psychophysiological responses during the aiming period. It is suggested that the psychophysiological differences can be useful to categorize shooters and to provide feedback in training because it is important to develop programs according to group levels, especially in the development of mental training programs. Besides, it is determined that the mobile EEG device is an effective method for determining the mental status of athletes in sports specific activities.

It is suitable to construct the strategy of shooting method. As an illustrated example, we investigate the stability of period orbits in a Duffing system with impacts. In Addition, coexistence of attractors and bifurcations for period orbits are considered.

To characterise public interest in gun control in the USA using internet search queries, we undertook a cross-sectional study of the relative popularity Google Trends searchers for ‘Gun Control’, ‘Second Amendment’, ‘National Rifle Association’ and ‘Mass Shooting’ from May 2015 to December 2018. 740 weeks of data were queried. Graphed data revealed nine major inflection points. Seven of the nine (78%) major inflection points were associated with mass shootings, while two of the nine (22%) were related to political events by either the president of the USA or a presidential candidate. Our exploration of Google Trends shows the frequency of national searches related to gun control peaks with mass shootings over a 1–2-week period and then stabilises to nominal relative popularity thereafter suggesting a need to engage the public on gun control during ‘trough’ periods in order to sustain national interest and dialogue.

AbstractThis article provides a thematic overview of a subset of controversial officer involved shootings that have occurred in Denver, Colorado during a period of thirty years (1983-2012). Determining whether a shooting was legally justified involved multiple participants, including local, national, and international representatives. The primary stakeholders were City and County District Attorneys regarding whether to file criminal charges against the officer, and Managers of Safety for whether officers acted within police departmental policy. Although most cases were processed without conflict, a small number were challenged by members of the community based on thematic reasons of shooting individuals who had not committed a crime, violating continuum of force standards, and entrusting law enforcement officers with the power to use deadly force both off-duty and while working secondary jobs. Despite outcome legitimacy vested in a small number of public officials, community members often reported a lack of justice and accountability. They struggled to get public officials to take notice and implement systematic change. Reviewing controversial shootings highlights the multiple issues involved in protecting law enforcement officers from encountering criminal charges, and in essence the procurement of colonial control. Critical Race Theory (interest convergence and storytelling), Social Dominance Theory, along with the historical framework of W. E. B. Du Bois, were utilized to explore a number of officer-involved shootings that continue to produce disparate outcomes by race, class, and gender.

An increase in the level of strength endurance can be carried out during the period of a special preparatory stage in the annual cycle of training athletes. The present research proposes a periodization of shooters' sports training with the substantiation of the measures taken to develop such a motor quality as strength endurance. The aim of the research is to organize the training process in a way that the development of the motor quality, strength endurance, enhanced performance in shooting. Young men of 13-15 years old engaged in educational training groups of children's and youth sports school on bullet shooting were selected to participate in the experiment.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, different actors involved in education promoted the introduction of shooting (“Tiro Escolar” or “school shooting lessons”) as a discipline to be taught in Chile’s educational system, which was established in 1928 but was not yet a large or regular operation. In analysing arguments of those who promoted this activity, this article shows shooting lessons in schools as a realm where it is possible to notice some dimensions of intentions to train Chilean children and youth through educating the body and emotions in the period under study.

Field of application: film production. The urgency of the work lies in the study of modern production methods and the development of their own film within a limited budget. The aim of the work is to analyze the methods of development and production of video content. The research method is a theoretical analysis of the three stages of video content production. The object of study is the phased production of video content. The subject of the study is the phased production of video content. The practical value lies in the further use of the presented algorithm for the production of video content for novice directors and producers.

Abstract Past-related researches adapt the definition of whole archery time. In this research, archery time that was divided in two sections including drawing period and launching period was denominated shooting period. We calculated the shooting period, drawing period and launching period by the high-speed camera（120Hz）, and further evaluated the relationship between the shooting period, drawing period and launching period and the archery score by Pearson correlation（P＜.05）. The numbers of subjects were 16 junior students. The Results of this research was follows: 1. Drawing period had significant positive relationship with archery score in the data of all archers, 30 meters shooting distance, and all junior high school archers. As for the data of elementary school archers, we did not find the same results. 2.Launching period had no significant relationship with archery score in any data combination. 3.Shooting period had significant positive relationship with archery score in the data of junior high school archers. As for the data of elementary school archers and all archers, we did not find the same results.

У магістерській роботі досліджуються питання удосконалення спеціальної стрілецької підготовки юних біатлоністів у змагальному періоді. З'ясовано що стрілецька підготовка є однією з найважливіших ланок у системі річного тренування біатлоністів. Особливої уваги даний вид підготовки потребує у юних біатлоністів. А в змагальному періоді тренування стрілецька підготовка лімітована показниками скорострільності. У проведених дослідженнях виявлені закономірності динаміки показників спеціальної стрілецької підготовки юних біатлоністів в різних видах змагальних програм з біатлону. Показана ступінь обумовленості показників стрілецької підготовленості юних біатлоністів в умовах змагань. Під час анкетування провідних тренерів з біатлону були визначені ефективні підходи вдосконалення стрілецької підготовки юних біатлоністів у змагальному періоді спортивного тренування. Серед засобів вдосконалення спеціальної стрілецької підготовки провідними є використання стрільби після бігу на лижах, холостий тренаж та стрільба з обмеженням часу. З метою вдосконалення стрілецької підготовки юних біатлоністів були розроблені комплекси спеціальних вправ, які впроваджувалися за певною методикою. За результатами дослідження виявлено, що окремі параметри стрілецьких дій, що виконуються на вогневих рубежах юними біатлоністами в видах змагальної програми з біатлону, при стрільбі лежачи і стоячи, мали достовірні відмінності за часом стрільби, виходу та перебування на вогневих рубежах, в класичній і спринтерській гонках. Встановлено ефективність впроваджених за розробленою методикою стрілецьких комплексів вправ, про що свідчать отримані більш високі спортивні результати за досліджуваними параметрами.
Отримані результати досліджень можуть бути використані в практиці підготовки юних спортсменів-біатлоністів старших розрядів в змагальному періоді тренування, для підготовки збірних юнацьких команд до відповідальних змагань, при розробці навчально-методичних посібників, при плануванні тренувального процесу юних біатлоністів.The master's thesis considers the issues of improving the special shooting training of young biathletes in the competitive period. It has been established that shooting training is one of the most important links in the system of annual training of biathletes.This type of training needs special attention from young biathletes. The shooting training is limited by indicators of rate of fire in the competitive period of training. The research revealed patterns of dynamics of indicators of special shooting training of young biathletes in various types of competitive biathlon programs. The degree of conditionality of shooting indicators of young biathletes in the conditions of competitions is shown. During the survey of leading biathlon coaches, effective approaches to improving the shooting training of young biathletes in the competitive period of sports training were identified. Among the means of improving special shooting training, the leading ones are the use of shooting after cross-country skiing, idle training and shooting with limited time. In order to improve the shooting training of young biathletes, special sets of exercises were developed, which were implemented according to a certain method. According to the results of the study, some parameters of shooting actions performed on the firing line by young biathletes in the types of competitive biathlon program, when lying down and standing, had significant differences in the time of shooting, exit and stay on the firing line, in classical and sprint races. The efficiency of the shooting complexes of exercises implemented according to the developed technique is established, as evidenced by the obtained higher sports results according to the studied parameters. The obtained research results can be used in the practice of training young biathletes of senior categories in the competitive period of training, to prepare national youth teams for responsible competitions, in the development of training manuals, in planning the training process of young biathletes.

As destinations of missions in both human and robotic spaceflight become more exotic, a foundational understanding the dynamical structures in the gravitational environments enable more informed mission trajectory designs. One particular type of structure, quasi-periodic orbits, are examined in this investigation. Specifically, efficient computation of quasi-periodic orbits and leveraging quasi-periodic orbits as trajectory design alternatives in the Earth-Moon and Sun-Earth systems. First, periodic orbits and their associated center manifold are discussed to provide the background for the existence of quasi-periodic motion on n-dimensional invariant tori, where n corresponds to the number of fundamental frequencies that define the motion. Single and multiple shooting differential corrections strategies are summarized to compute families 2-dimensional tori in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CR3BP) using a stroboscopic mapping technique, originally developed by Howell and Olikara. Three types of quasi-periodic orbit families are presented: constant energy, constant frequency ratio, and constant mapping time families. Stability of quasi-periodic orbits is summarized and characterized with a single stability index quantity. For unstable quasi-periodic orbits, hyperbolic manifolds are computed from the differential of a discretized invariant curve. The use of quasi-periodic orbits is also demonstrated for destination orbits and transfer trajectories. Quasi-DROs are examined in the CR3BP and the Sun-Earth-Moon ephemeris model to achieve constant line of sight with Earth and avoid lunar eclipsing by exploiting orbital resonance. Arcs from quasi-periodic orbits are leveraged to provide an initial guess for transfer trajectory design between a planar Lyapunov orbit and an unstable halo orbit in the Earth-Moon system. Additionally, quasi-periodic trajectory arcs are exploited for transfer trajectory initial guesses between nearly stable periodic orbits in the Earth-Moon system. Lastly, stable hyperbolic manifolds from a Sun-Earth L1 quasi-vertical orbit are employed to design maneuver-free transfer from the LEO vicinity to a quasi-vertical orbit.

The main contention of Shooting a Tiger is that hunting during the colonial period was not merely a recreational activity, but a practice intimately connected with imperial governance. The book positions shikar or hunting at the heart of colonial rule by demonstrating that, for the British in India, it served as a political, practical, and symbolic apparatus in the consolidation of power and rule during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyses early colonial hunting during the Company period, and then surveys different aspects of hunting during the high imperial decades in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book draws upon an impressive array of archival material and uses a wide range of evidence to support its contentions. It examines hunting at a variety of social and ethnic levels—military, administrative, elite, princely India, Indian professional hunters, and in terms of Indian auxiliaries and (sometimes) resisters. It also deals with different geographical contexts—the plains, the mountains, north and south India. The exclusive privilege of hunting exercised by the ruling classes, following colonial forest legislation, continued to be extended to the Indian princes who played a critical role in sustaining the lavish hunts that became the hallmark of the late nineteenth-century British Raj. Hunting was also a way of life in colonial India, undertaken by officials and soldiers alike alongside their everyday duties, necessary for their mental sustenance and vital for the smooth operation of the colonial administration. There are also two final chapters on conservation, particularly the last chapter focusing on two British hunter-turned-conservationists, Jim Corbett and Colonel Richard Burton.

Among his many films are the classics All Quiet on the Western Front, Of Mice and Men, A Walk in the Sun, Pork Chop Hill, the original Ocean’s Eleven and Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Marlon Brando. Born in Ukraine, he came to America as a teenager and learned about film in the U.S. Army in World War I. By the early 1920s he was editing silent films in Hollywood, and soon graduated to shooting his own features. His films were nominated for 28 different Academy Awards during a career that lasted 40 years. Among the many stars whom he directed were Barbara Stanwyck, Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper, Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford and Kirk Douglas. Providing biographical information, production history and critical analysis, this first major scholarly study of Milestone places his films in a political, cultural and cinematic context. Also discussed in depth, using newly available archival material, is Milestone’s experience during the Hollywood Blacklist period, when he was one of the first prominent Hollywood figures to fall under suspicion for his alleged Communist sympathies. Drawing on his personal papers at the AMPAS library, my book gives Milestone the honored place herichly deserves in the American film canon.

Since the first edition, there is no doubt that the pregnant population has become more complex, with increasing maternal age and BMI, and challenging co-morbidities presenting more frequently. As well as providing updates from recent MBRRACE reports and national guidelines, new techniques, drugs, and technology, such as point of care testing have been included. This chapter offers a brief account of the institution of the hunt, or shikar, and its significance as an allegory of rule in pre-colonial and colonial India, by illustrating the transition of hunting from the Mughals to the East Indian Company period. Further, this study moves away from the purely recreational focus on hunting, and places it within the world of everyday colonial administration and rule. It firmly establishes the link between shikar and governance, particularly how the British positioned and employed big-game hunting and conservation at various levels, and in different situations, aimed at the establishment and stabilization of colonial rule, and in ordering and redrawing Indian marginal territories. Another key aspect is how shikar served as an essential platform, where power and rule operated in a recreational situation. Here, the chapter illustrates the way the hunting field aided and enabled the British to formulate their political and imperial agendas in an expedient way. The sporting lives of the Company administrators like John Malcolm and James Outram are studied in detail to demonstrate the nature of high imperial decades and British military credence in the Indian hunting field.

This chapter is concerned with the development of hunting as ‘sport’, whereby colonial hunters from the late nineteenth century began to carefully shape the idiom of the hunt, gradually distancing themselves from indigenous hunting methods. By systematically showcasing their skill and sportsmanship, British hunters portrayed their methods and practices as more sophisticated than the older native traditions. This study also elaborates on how different terrains and environments determined the planning and organization of hunts by the British hunters across the presidencies. Rank, authority, and privilege not only operated between the colonizers and colonized, but also within the world of British hunting communities. In contrast to the Company period, hunting became a microcosm of imperial society in late nineteenth-century India, and different sorts of hunts and clubs were open to people of various ranks. In addition, the making of hunting into a ‘sport’ was heavily linked to a discourse of class and race, drawing upon ideas of chivalry and with only the most acceptable hunting practices encoded into sportsmanship. The development of a class-based regime of hunting is evident in the way pig-sticking came to be regarded as the most superior kind of hunt, because it required great skill in horse-riding and horsemanship, presented added danger and utilized the spear rather than the gun. The chapter also explains how technological change in firearms took place and the way in which such changes were related to the transformation of hunting mores in nineteenth-century India.

The epilogue moves past the period of 1995 to 2015 to consider responses to the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida that left forty-nine people, predominantly LGBT people of color, dead. In the wake of the massacre, legislators at each end of the political spectrum used the shooting to advance their own political agendas, from advocating for stricter gun laws, to lobbying for policies that would restrict Muslims from entering the United States, to creating awareness of the unique vulnerabilities of LGBT people of color. As the largest mass killing of LGBT Americans in U.S. history, the shooting, and the myriad political responses to the tragedy, revealed the precarious position of many LGBT people even after the purported victory of “marriage equality” one year earlier. The epilogue also offers possibilities for how to engage in memorialization in ways that promote greater awareness of, and space for, gender, racial, religious, and sexual diversity.

Sleep loss may impair athletic performance. Sleep extension may improve performance in sleep-deprived athletes. In elite sports, where the slightest edge can make a difference in individual and team success, ways to improve performance are of great interest to athletes and teams. In the presented case, a male basketball player sought to improve his free throw shooting accuracy. With a disciplined approach to sleeping longer periods of time each night over a 12-week period, there was a substantial improvement in free throw percentage, sleepiness, and self-reported confidence in making free throws. This result is consistent with an extensive literature showing that improving sleep can improve athletic performance.

This chapter closely traces the evolution of Hou Xiaoxian's contentious modes of place making while he shot on-location in China for the “Taiwan Trilogy," where Southern Chinese locales sometimes substituted for Taiwan’s historical settings. Location shooting in China for City of Sadness presented Hou with his first opportunity to perform a role as a cultural ambassador in an unprecedented period of cross-strait geopolitical thaw. After cross-strait relations became more normalized, Hou widely publicized his intentions of location shooting in Fujian for The Puppetmaster (1993). During this shoot, Hou articulated his theory of “authenticating life,” or the reenactment of lived experience. To authenticate the life of famed Taiwanese puppeteer Li Tianlu, whom he believed to be a living embodiment of Chinese-ness, Hou re-staged live budaixi shows in Fujian, hoping the environmental aura of present-day China would conjure for Li memories of colonial-era Taiwan. Assistant director Chen Huaien, however, counters that it was Taiwanese culture which required salvaging, not China’s. “Authenticating life,” Chen implied, relied on inauthentic means of reenactment to produce what only felt superficially authentic. The final section explores this contradiction as it is manifested in Good Men, Good Women (1995) – Hou’s first, and final film to feature present-day Chinese settings. I demonstrate that the filmmakers were unable to experience their production environments in Guangdong as anything more than through a “tourist gaze.” Hou finally experienced the constraints of “authenticating life,” and more broadly, the complexities of salvaging cultural Chinese heritage in an increasingly volatile period of cross-strait relations.

The term primary trigeminal neuralgia is used for classical and idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia as no cause other than compression of the trigeminal nerve is noted on magnetic resonance imaging in the classical cases. The shooting electrical pain is unilateral, evoked by light touch, and occurs as single or multiple episodes of pain lasting seconds to minutes. A more constant dull ache can be reported. Carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, and other antiseizure medication used as monotherapy or polytherapy are effective. Tolerability of medications and poor quality of life leads patients to surgery. Microvascular decompression offers the longest period of freedom from pain but is associated with an 0.3% risk of mortality or other cerebral complications (0.6%). Ablative procedures typically offer periods of 2–4 years of pain relief, but all carry a high risk of sensory changes which can have a significant impact on quality of life. Multidisciplinary clinics and patient support groups are important sources of support.

Since the year 2000, European horror cinema has undergone a major revival. After the 1990s, which saw very few European horror films made, the first fifteen years of the twenty-first century witnessed a groundswell in production from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Serbia and the UK. Italy was also part of this ‘new wave’, though its horror films typically did not reach as wide an audience, nor experience the critical recognition, of its continental neighbours. Italian horror during this period also faced a great irony. Whereas several filmmakers from America and Europe pastiched the Italian horror boom of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s with films that were widely distributed and commercially well received, Italian directors shooting horror films either in Italy or elsewhere typically lacked access to ‘formal’ distribution (Lobato, 2012) and therefore their films were not as widely seen.

In 1992, on the five hundredth anniversary of the world-changing voyage of Christopher Columbus, Ridley Scott created a movie that showed the personal side of the explorer. Extensive research was poured into the project as well as insights from Columbus’s diary, which was inherited by his son. The production was lavish and exotic. The culture of the people who lived where Columbus landed is portrayed with realism and authenticity. The performances, especially that of Gérard Depardieu, are engaging. Ridley Scott captures history with meticulous location shooting and intricate lighting and composition that define the period. The film did not get great reviews and box office was unimpressive. Controversy over who Christopher Columbus really was and what he actually accomplished continues to swirl, but 1492: Conquest of Paradise brings layers of insight into his life and larger-than-life personality.

A detailed comparison with Psycho. Peeping Tom and Psycho were released in 1960 only 2 months apart, both made by revered British directors. But while Peeping Tom was rejected, Psycho became hugely successful. In this chapter we try to understand why. Psycho was black and white and Peeping Tom was colour – this was a cross-over period between shooting techniques and it could be argued that the black and white of Psycho slighted muted it’s potential to truly horrify the audience, unlike Powell’s brightly colourful Peeping Tom. The presentation of Psycho, from a music point of view is highly theatrical, as is the eventual reveal to show the pantomime villain of Norman as ‘Mother’. Was Peeping Tom more revolting to a contemporary audience because it was that much closer to real life? This close comparison identified similarities and key differences between the two films.

Abstract In this paper, a generalized shooting/arc-length method for determining periodic orbit and its period of nonlinear dynamical system is presented. At first, by changing the time scale the period value of periodic orbit of the nonlinear system is drawn into the governing equation of this system. Then, by using the period value as a parameter, the shooting/arc-length procedure is taken for seeking such a periodic solution and its period simultaneously. The value of increment changed in iteration procedure is selected by using optimization method. The procedure involves the detennining of periodic orbit and its period value of the system. Thereby, the periodic orbit and period value of the system can be sought out rapidly and precisely. At last, the validity of such method is verified by determining the periodic orbit and period value for van der pol equation and nonlinear rotor-bear system.

This study is a major part of the dissertation research. It is focused on the development of shooting skills in young biathletes in a three-year training period. Specifically, the long-term development of the percentage success rate of prone and standing shooting in both training and races is described in study. It mentions marginally shooting skills such as the postural stability, the stability of aiming and triggering. The first part of our research, completed in 2017, brought findings that the relationship between exercise intensity and the biathlete’s postural stability exists, but following part of it, finalized in 2018, did not demonstrate the dependence of exercise intensity on the aiming stability and triggering. Initially, the study involved 23 young biathletes (13 girls, 10 boys). Whole research was completed by 19 biathletes (11 girls: age 17.8±0.64 years; 8 boys: age 17.4±0.72 years) after three years. The results of our current study are based on the records of shooting on metal targets that were created during each biathlon shooting training and all biathlon races of the participants in the three-year period. Only shooting with previous physical load was involved into results, shooting at rest was not included in the study. The results show the improvement of the percentage success rate in both prone and standing shooting in the three-year training period in both girl and boy groups and in both training and races (total percentage success rate = the average of the training and races percentage success rate – girls in prone: 2016/2017: 71.3%, 2017/2018: 75.5%, 2018/2019: 80.0%; girls in standing: 2016/2017: 61.8%, 2017/2018: 67.7%, 2018/2019: 73.4%; boys in prone: 2016/2017: 72.0%, 2017/2018: 72.9%, 2018/2019: 75.3%; boys in standing: 2016/2017: 57.6%, 2017/2018: 63.5%, 2018/2019: 67.7%). Girls are better shooters than boys in this research group. In general, the gradual improvement of percentage success rate in time is expected to occur in young biathletes that are in the intensive training process, but our study brings unique data of concretely values at this age of athletes that has not been known yet. The obtained data could be used by biathlon trainers to compare the current level of shooting skills at a given age of their young athletes. At the same time, a normative standard of biathlon shooting skills in a given age could be created in the case of gathering more data. That is one of the goals of the Czech Biathlon Union.

A two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) model comprising nonlinear delay differential equations (DDEs) is analyzed for self-excited oscillations during orthogonal turning. The model includes multiple time delays, possibility of tool leaving cut, additional process damping (due to flank interference), ploughing force, and shear-angle/friction-angle variation. An algorithm, based on an existing shooting method for DDEs, is developed to simulate tool dynamics and seek periodic solutions. The multiple-regenerative and tool-leaving-cut effects are simulated via an equivalent 1-DOF system by introducing a time shift. While the limit cycle amplitude and minimum-period obtained via shooting and via direct numerical integration compare well, the latter method converges very slowly, thus establishing the efficiency of the former. Numerical studies involving the machining parameters are presented. Only period-1 motion was observed for the range of cutting parameters considered here. Features of a subcritical Hopf bifurcation appear in the amplitude versus width-of-cut plane. This implies the possibility of subcritical instability characterized by sudden onset of finite-amplitude chatter. Additional process damping causes a reduction in chatter amplitudes as well as the subcritical instability to occur at a larger width of cut. An increase in width of cut causes frequent tool-leaving-cut events and increased chatter amplitudes. The frequency of tool disengagement increases with cutting velocity, despite cutting force in the shank direction remaining constant over a certain velocity range. The chatter amplitude at first increases and then decreases when the cutting velocity or the uncut chip thickness is increased. The present plant model and dynamics could be useful for real time active control of tool chatter.

The higher order effects from ball bearing nonlinearities cause complex vibration characteristics in rotor ball bearing systems. The sources of nonlinearities are internal radial clearance, Hertzian contact forces between balls and races and varying compliance effect. The same authors in their earlier work have identified the sets of parameters corresponding to instability and chaos for a horizontal flexible rotor supported on deep groove ball bearing. To the best of author’s knowledge, there is not much work reported in the literature on the dynamic analysis for instability and chaos, which is based on energy functions and bearing loads. Extending the preceding research work in the present paper by using a typical set of parameters and specifications of rotor ball bearing system, a correlation of parameters to instability and chaos is attempted using different energy functions associated with the dynamical system. A generalized Timoshenko beam finite element formulation is used to model the flexible rotor shaft. To achieve the convergence of solution with smaller number of elements, shape functions are derived from the exact solutions of governing differential equations of Timoshenko beam element. The sources of excitation are rotating unbalance and parametric excitation due to varying compliance of ball bearing during motion. For the bearing used in the present paper, the ratio of these excitation frequencies comes out to be an irrational number. Therefore, the dynamic response would be quasi-periodic with time period equal to infinity. To extend the use of non-autonomous shooting method to derive quasi-periodic solution, the fixed point algorithm (FPA) proposed in the literature is used to deduce the time period for non-autonomous shooting algorithm. The shooting method otherwise is used only to derive periodic solutions. Thus the non-autonomous shooting method coupled with fixed point algorithm (FPA) is used to compute the quasi-periodic solution, which also gives the monodromy matrix. The eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix, called Floqoet multipliers, give information about instability. The chaotic nature of the dynamic response is established by the maximum value of Lyapunov exponent. Once the instability and chaos is confirmed based on computed values of Floquet multipliers and Lyapunov exponents, the nature of the work done (positive or negative) by different conservative and non-conservative forces and moments during motion are analyzed and the fundamental causes, which make the system response unstable and / or chaotic, are established.

Abstract In this paper the Multiple Shooting Method is briefly exposed. This method is then applied to a simplified model of a rotor/stator system including a bearing with clearance under static and unbalance forces. With bearing having a small amount of clearance, it is pointed out that the orbits are no longer circular at certain frequencies as for linear systems. If the clearance is large, the frequency response curve can be divided into three zones: a non-contact zone, a zone with one or several gains and looses of contact per period and a full contact zone. For both cases we emphasize on the evolution of the orbits while passing through transition zones.

Abstract We consider the dynamic instability and nonlinear vibration of doubly-curved cross-ply laminated shallow shells with simply supported boundary conditions. We investigate their responses and stability to a primary resonance (i.e., Ω ≠ ω11). The governing nonlinear partial-differential equations of motion are based on the von Karman-type geometric nonlinear theory and the first-order shear-deformation theory. We use the Galerkin procedure to reduce the governing nonlinear partial-differential equations to an infinite system of nonlinear coupled ordinary-differential equations. We use a combination of a shooting technique and Floquet theory to calculate the periodic responses of the shell and investigate their bifurcations. We show that for some shell parameters, a single-mode approximation misses some important dynamics, such as period-doubling, bifurcations.

A typical problem encountered when studying turbo-machineries is studied: contact between a rotor and his stator. The contact is supposed to be permanent and frictionless; both rotor and stator are linked to the carter in an elastic and dissipative way. Under these modelling assumptions, nonlinear vibrations appear through the geometry of the problem when the system is excited by an out-of-balance within the rotor. Equations are written in the rotating frame in order to simplify the resultant frequency content of the dynamic quantities followed along the excitationnal frequency range. The stability and bifurcation analysis of a particular equilibrium is carried on. This first stage exhibits two Hopf bifurcation points. The associated periodic solutions are constructed and followed, using a shooting method. A specific bifurcation diagram is then established, where the incommensurate period of the solution is shown.

Abstract Nonlinear responses of shape-memory oscillators are investigated systematically using a numerical procedure and a modified Ivshin-Pence model for the restoring force. Due to the discontinuities in the tangent stiffness, classical gradient-based shooting techniques for determining periodic responses are not applicable. Herein the implemented algorithm searches the periodic solutions as fixed points of the Poincaré map. The Jacobian of the map is calculated via a central finite-difference scheme and its eigenvalues are computed to ascertain the stability of the solutions and the associated codimension-one bifurcations. A number of frequency-response curves are constructed for some meaningful shape-memory oscillators (characterized by different hysteresis loops) and for various excitation levels in the primary and superharmonic frequency ranges. The investigations are conducted both in isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. A rich class of solutions and bifurcations — including jump phenomena, pitchfork, period doubling, complete or incomplete bubble structures with a variety of nonperiodic responses — is found and discussed.

We present a dynamic analysis and simulation of electrically actuated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators under primary-resonance excitation. We use a shooting technique, perturbation techniques, and long-time integration of the equation of motion to investigate the global dynamics of the resonators. We study the dynamic pull-in instability and show various scenarios and mechanisms for its occurrence. Our results show that dynamic pull-in can occur through a saddle-node bifurcation, a period-doubling bifurcation, or homoclinic tangling, depending on factors such as the initial conditions of the device and the level of the electrostatic force.

The problem of violence against children has always existed and will probably exist. Today, its consequences, such as the death of children from starvation, during bombing and and shooting, murder during domestic quarrel are widespread. There are also forms of violence, such as sale of children, lebworks, economic exploitation, prostitution, neglect of needs and interests etc. Closure of educational institutions, distance learning through COVID-19 has radically changed the form of psychological support for students. Forced isolation has exacerbated the already difficult problem of violence. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the problem of prevention of violence among students during quarantine; to determine the algorithm of work of a practical psychologist on prevention of violence among students during the quarantine period; propose measures to prevent domestic violence. A study was conducted during November 2020 by conducting group focus interviews with teachers of educational institutions on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was to determine the impact of the pandemic and quarantine measures on the implementation of the educational process in general and its participants in particular. The poll was anonymous. The Coverage of respondents – 3209 people. The level is all-Ukrainian. The algorithm of actions of pedagogical workers in case of revealing signs or facts that may indicate the commission of violence against a child at work and the algorithm of a practical psychologist for the prevention of violence among students during quarantine are determined. Activities with teachers, students and parents on the prevention of domestic violence are proposed.
