The current issue of Poligrafi focuses on this historical period and explores different aspects of the contact with East Asian religions at that time. The text by Chikako Shigemori Bučar focuses on the visits Alma Karlin made to the temples and shrines in Japan and the traces that remain of those visits in her work and her collection. Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik focuses on how Alma Karlin met with Chinese funerary rituals and mourning practices and how she interpreted them. In the third paper Byoung Yoong Kang provides a detailed reconstruction of the events behind an image in Alma Karlin’s collection that depicts a Korean funeral. In the fourth paper, Klara Hrvatin analyses Japanese musical instruments from the collection of Alma Karlin and their relation to religious music. The last paper, by Helena Motoh, talks about the many ways in which Confucian tradition was understood and interpreted in pre-WWII Slovenia.

We investigate the relation between large N duality applied to systems of D5's and [Formula: see text]'s wrapping vanishing cycles of local CY in type IIB and M-theory lifts of the NS5/D4/[Formula: see text] systems in type IIA to which they are related by T-duality. Through a simple example based on a local CY constructed using an A2 singularity, we review this well-known correspondence in the supersymmetric setting and describe the manner in which it generalizes when antibranes are added. Agreement between the IIB and IIA pictures, which supports the assertion that [Formula: see text] supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in these systems at string tree level, is demonstrated when gs ≪ 1. Novel nonholomorphic features can arise away from this regime and their physical origin is discussed. This note is based on talks given at KITP, Harvard University, TIFR, the University of Tokyo at Hongo, the 2007 Les Houches Summer School, and the 2007 Simons Workshop, is based on work done in collaboration with K. Papadodimas and M. Shigemori, and contains some previously unpublished results.

Neurophysiol. 77: 378–385, 1997. To investigate the mechanism of generation of the hypoxia-induced hyperpolarization (hypoxic hyperpolarization) in hippocampal CA1 neurons in rat tissue slices, recordings were made in current-clamp mode and single-electrode voltage-clamp mode. Superfusion with hypoxic medium produced a hyperpolarization and corresponding outward current, which were associated with an increase in membrane conductance. Reoxygenation produced a further hyperpolarization, with corresponding outward current, followed by a recovery to the preexposure level. The amplitude of the posthypoxic hyperpolarization was always greater than that of the hypoxic hyperpolarization. In single-electrode voltage-clamp mode, it was difficult to record reproducible outward currents in response to repeated hypoxic exposure with the use of electrodes with a high tip resistance. The current-clamp technique was therefore chosen to study the pharmacological characteristics of the hypoxic hyperpolarization. In 60–80% of hippocampal CA1 neurons, glibenclamide or tolbutamide (3–100 μM) reduced the amplitude of the hypoxic hyperpolarization in a concentration-dependent manner by up to ∼70%. The glibenclamide or tolbutamide concentrations producing half-maximal inhibition of the hypoxic hyperpolarization were 6 and 12 μM, respectively. The chord conductance of the membrane potential between −80 and −90 mV in the absence of glibenclamide (30 μM) or tolbutamide (100 μM) was 2–3 times greater than that in the presence of glibenclamide or tolbutamide. In contrast, the reversal potential of the hypoxic hyperpolarization was approximately −83 mV in both the absence and presence of tolbutamide or glibenclamide. In ∼40% of CA1 neurons, diazoxide (100 μM) or nicorandil (1 mM) mimicked the hypoxic hyperpolarization and pretreatment of these drugs occluded the hypoxic hyperpolarization. When ATP was injected into the impaled neuron, hypoxic exposure could not produce a hyperpolarization. The intracellular injection of the nonhydrolyzable ATP analogue 5′-adenylylimidodiphosphate lithium salt reduced the amplitude of the hypoxic hyperpolarization. Furthermore, application of dinitrophenol (10 μM) mimicked the hypoxic hyperpolarization, and the dinitrophenol-induced hyperpolarization was inhibited by either pretreatment of tolbutamide or intracellular injection of ATP, indicating that the hypoxic hyperpolarization is highly dependent on intracellular ATP. It is therefore concluded that in the majority of hippocampal CA1 neurons, exposure to hypoxic conditions resulting in a reduction in the intracellular level of ATP leads to activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels with concomitant hyperpolarization.

In the mids of cold northern winds and landscape covered with snow we are pleased to announce the first ALA issue of the year 2019, which contains six research articles. Warm congratulation goes to all the authors, and words of appreciation to the Editorial team and recently enlarged proofreading team that have been working very hard in order to offer state-of-the-art contemporary linguistic research in this journal. The present issue is opened up by Mayuri J. DILIP and Rajesh KUMAR, who present a unified account of licensing conditions of Negative Polarity Items (NPI) in Telugu. In their work “Negative Polarity Items in Telugu” they analyze the distribution of NPIs in complex sentences with embedded clauses, and conclude that negation c-commanding NPI be conducted at the base-generated position. Kun SUN with his article “The Integration Functions of Topic Chains in Chinese Discourse” thoroughly presents the long and extensive Chinese research tradition on topic chains, and re-examines their core characteristics with the help of the so-called “integration functions”. The following paper “Tracing the Identity and Ascertaining the Nature of Brahmi-derived Devanagari Script” by Krishna Kumar PANDEY and Smita JHA exploits the orthographic design of Brahmi-derived scripts. Authors argue that such scripts should not be described with the existing linguistic properties of alphabetic and syllabic scripts but should instead gains its own categorization with a unique descriptor. Chikako SHIGEMORI BUČAR successfully submitted the article “Image of Japan among Slovenes” in which she represents the process and mechanism of borrowing from Japanese into Slovene. Conclusions briefly touch the image of Japan seen through the borrowing process and consolidated loanwords, and predict possible development of borrowing in the near future. Another interesting paper “Understanding Sarcastic Metaphorical Expression in Hindi through Conceptual Integration Theory” was authored by Sandeep Kumar SHARMA and Sweta SINHA. Based on a corpus of five thousand sentences, authors examine the abstract notion of sarcasm within the framework of conceptual integration theory, and with special reference to Hindi language. Findings aim to provide a theoretical understanding on how Hindi sarcasm is perceived among the native speakers. And last but not least, Điệp Thi Nhu NGUYỄN, An-Vinh LƯƠNG, and Điền ĐINH humbly observe research backlog in the area of Vietnamese text readability and write their paper “Affection of the part of speech elements in Vietnamese text readability” to encourage researchers to further explore the field and put Vietnamese findings on the world’s map. Editors and Editorial Board wish the regular and new readers of the ALA journal a pleasant read full of inspiration.

Education is a medium of subject-matter instruction that has shown a constant evolution. In a second or “foreign” language field, it boasts close to countless combinations of a target and source language or dialect and characteristics of each individual who participates in the process, as well as all direct and indirect learning material adding to this abundance. Though having narrowed the scope of the winter ALA issue to no more than two languages, namely Japanese and Chinese in focus, a great variety of the articles nevertheless demonstrate a great variety of perceived problems and methodological approaches used to solve them. What is more, this issue also contains reviews of two new publications, yet another tool for the more advanced acquisition of the Japanese and Chinese languages respectively. We hereby express our gratitude to every single contributor to this issue, not leaving out the reviewers and others involved in the publication. This issue opens with the article “The Role of Prototypical Transitivity in the Selection of Accusative Case Particle wo by Persian Learners of L2 Japanese” written by Anubhuti CHAUHAN and Ayat HOSSEINI. In the article, the authors focused on the selection pattern of the Japanese case particle wo by Persian-speaking learners to find out that learners were, in a specific way, sensitive to the degree of predicate transitivity and that learners’ particle selection strategy is influenced by proficiency level. The article “Understanding Vocabulary of L2 Learners of Japanese” by Nagisa MORITOKI ŠKOF investigated the effectiveness of reading skills by L2 learners of Japanese from the “Reading corpus of non-native speakers of Japanese” and concluded on the types of strategies non-kanji native speakers use to grasp the meanings of individual words, sentences, or whole texts. CHEW Fong Peng wrote the article “Relationship Between Attitude, Learning Orientation, Motivation, and Proficiency Degree of the Chinese Language Among Trainee Teachers”, in which she briefly introduced the consolidating position of the Chinese language in Malaysia, and looked into motivational intensity and its incentives among Malaysian trainee teachers of the Chinese language. The following article “Mitigation Strategies in Semi-structured Oral Chinese Interviews”, written by Maria QUEROL-BATALLER conducted research on the communicative style in Chinese. By using semi-structured oral interviews from the C-ORAL-CHINA corpus she identified and accounted for the strategic mechanisms through which mitigation is carried out by native Chinese speakers. Yet another article with an inviting topic “Harry Potter Movies and Borrowing Neologisms in Chinese” was written by Michaela FRYDRYCHOVÁ. The article is a lexicological analysis of the neologisms that occurred in Harry Potter films and in it, the author defined loanword categories that were used for borrowing neologisms from English to Chinese, and assessed their productivity. Last but not least are the two book reviews. First, Chikako SHIGEMORI BUČAR reviewed the dictionary “Großes japanisch-deutsches Wörterbuch” by Stalph J. et al. (2022), in her words a remarkable achievement as, besides offering word searches, it is an excellent reference for researchers and students on Japan. In the second book review, Mateja PETROVČIČ evaluated a book entitled “Praktická korpusová lingvistika – čínsky jazyk” written by Ľuboša Gajdoša and published in 2022. The book was described as a systematic step-by-step guide to understanding the Chinese language and is recommended for readers with prior knowledge of Chinese, as well as for beginners and intermediate users in the field of corpus linguistics. Editors and Editorial board wish the regular and new readers of the ALA journal a pleasant read full of inspiration, and a rise of new research ideas inspired by these papers. Editors

Au cours des dernières décennies où l’on assiste à une refondation de la morphologie, la discipline s’intéresse de plus en plus à des phénomènes « périphériques », « marginaux », « irréguliers » ou « extragrammaticaux », à des phénomènes n’appartenant pas aux « régions nodales » de la morphologie. Le présent numéro de Linguistica, premier numéro thématique de notre revue, réunit des études qui s’intéres- sent aux frontières internes et externes de la morphologie. La diversité et la richesse des thèmes abordés et des approches proposées témoignent d’un intérêt croissant que les linguistes, non pas uniquement les morphologues, portent à cette thématique.Les articles proposés s’articulent autour de cinq axes majeurs.Un premier axe rassemble les articles qui étudient les frontières entre différentes composantes de la morphologie. L’étude de Michel Roché examine les contraintes lexicales et morphophonologiques sur le paradigme des dérivés en –aie. Les résultats de son analyse remettent en question la notion de « règle de construction des lexèmes ». Irena Stramljič Breznik et Ines Voršič se penchent sur les néologismes de sport en slovène et essaient d’évaluer la productivité ou la créativité des procédés morphologiques en jeu. Dans une étude d’inspiration cognitiviste, Alexandra Bagasheva aborde l’hétérogénéité des verbes composés en anglais. En s’appuyant sur les données fournies par les para- digmes verbaux du maltais, Maris Camilleri examine la complexité du phénomène de classes flexionnelles basées sur les radicaux. Trois travaux concernent des procédés typiquement « extragrammaticaux » servant à former le plus souvent des occasionnalismes: Arnaud Léturgie tente de dégager des propriétés prototypiques de l’amalgamation lexicale en français, notamment celles de la création des mots-valises; Silvia Cacchiani analyse, à l’intérieur du cadre de la morphologie naturelle, les mots-valises formés à partir de noms propres et de substantifs, phénomène relativement récent en ita- lien ; Thomas Schwaiger, se fondant sur les données tirées de la base « Graz Database on Reduplication », traite des constructions rédupliquées dans une perspective universelle. Deux articles adoptent une perspective contrastive: celui d’Eva Sicherl et Andreja Žele étudie la productivité des diminutifs nominaux en slovène et en anglais ; celui de Marie-Anne Berron et Marie Mouton propose une analyse détaillée de l’importance quantificative et qualificative des procédés de la morphologie marginale dans le slam en France et en Allemagne. Géraldine Walther présente un nouveau modèle général, inscrit dans une approche réalisationnelle, qui permet d’évaluer et de formaliser la (non-)canonicité de phénomènes flexionnels.Un deuxième axe se situe sur la frontière séparant la morphologie dérivationnelle de la morphologie flexionnelle. Tatjana Marvin se penche sur le problème de la préservation de l’accent dans les dérivés anglais, mettant en comparaison les approches de Chomsky et de Marantz avec celle de la théorie de l’Optimalité. L’article de Patrizia Cordin explore la façon dont les constructions locatives verbales dans les langues et les dialectes romans, notamment dans le dialecte trentin, ont perdu en partie leur sens spatial au profit d’un sens grammatical plus abstrait (aspect, résultat, intensité etc.). Se focalisant sur la langue indigène d’Australie kayerdild, Erich Round insiste sur l’utilité de la notion de « morphome » qui permet d’instaurer un niveau de représentation linguistique intermédiaire entre les niveaux lexical, morphosyntaxique et morphophonologique. La contribution de Varja Cvetko Orešnik, qui adopte le cadre théorique de l’école ljubljanaise de la syntaxe naturelle, apporte quelques données nouvelles sur la morphophonologie et la morphosyntaxe du verbe en ancien indien.Les deux articles suivants examinent des questions d’ordre morphologique aux- quelles se heurtent les langues entrant en contact : Georgia Zellou traite du cas du cir- confixe /ta...-t/ que l’arabe marocain a emprunté au berbère, tandis que Chikako Shigemori Bučar analyse le sort réservé aux emprunts japonais en slovène.L’axe diachronique est exploré principalement par les articles de Douglas Lightfoot, de Javier E. Díaz Vera et de Metka Furlan. D. Lightfoot examine la perti- nence de la notion d’affixoïde et evalue la « suffixoïdité » de l’élément germanique « -mann ». J. E. Díaz Vera décrit la lexicalisation, voire la grammaticalisation des verbes causatifs en ancien anglais. Metka Furlan se penche sur une relation « morpho- logique » archaïque rattachant le nom protoslave pol’e à l’adjectif hittite palhi-.Autour du dernier axe se réunissent les contributions qui examinent la frontière entre la morphologie et les disciplines linguistiques voisines, telles que la phonologie ou la syntaxe. Marc Plénat étudie en détail les contraintes morphologiques, syntaxiques et phonologiques pesant sur la liaison de l’adjectif au masculin singulier sur le nom en français. Janez Orešnik, fondateur de l’école ljubljanaise de la syntaxe naturelle, explore le comportement morphologique de l’impératif dans une perspective universelle. Mojca Schlamberger Brezar propose une étude contrastive, à partir des don- nées tirées de corpus monolingues et parallèles, de la grammaticalisation du gérondif et du participe en français et en slovène. L’article de Gašper Ilc applique la notionde« cycle de Jespersen » à la négation dans le slovène standard et dans les dialectes pannoniens. Mojca Smolej propose une étude fouillée de l’émergence des articles défini et indéfini dans le slovène parlé spontané.

Thermal convection is always present when the temperature of an NMR experiment is different from the ambient one. Most often, it falsifies the value of the diffusion coefficient determined by NMR diffusiometry using a PGSE NMR experiment. In spite of common belief, it acts not only at higher temperatures but also at temperatures lower than in the laboratory. Sodium alkyl-sulfate monomers and micelles in D2O solvent were used as model molecules measured at T = 319 K in order to show that thermal convection sometimes remains hidden in experiments. In this paper, we demonstrate that the increase in apparent diffusion coefficient with increasing diffusion time is a definite indicator of thermal convection. Extrapolation to zero diffusion time can also be used to obtain the real diffusion coefficient, likewise applying the less sensitive pulse sequences designed for flow compensation or the expensive hardware, e.g., sapphire or Shigemi NMR tubes, to decrease the temperature gradient. Further, we show experiments illustrating the effect of a long diffusion time in which the periodic changes of the echo intensity with gradient strength appear as predicted by theories.

Se o projeto euro-ocidental de modernidade técnica, científica, política e econômica produziu a crença na marcha inexorável da história, e se tal progresso foi encharcado pela constituição da razão iluminista com não poucos paradoxos presentes nas relações interculturais, o século XX expôs as contradições desse mesmo ideal de modernidade, a começar pela revisão dos efeitos deletérios de uma globalização assimétrica cujas raízes encontram-se fincadas no humanismo, no mercantilismo e no colonialismo europeu promovidos desde o final do século XV. Partindo desta premissa e considerando que a História da Arte se constitui como campo de conhecimento mais ou menos autônomo justamente no bojo desse percurso da modernidade em conluio com a colonialidade, o presente projeto de pesquisa propõe-se a discutir os confrontos estéticos presentes nas fricções interculturais oriundas da globalização, de modo a perceber como a arte, com suas teorias e metodologias, tornou-se um campo privilegiado de estetização de racismos e etnocentrismos desde o início do colonialismo, perpassando a gênese da arte moderna como “exotismo oriental” ou como “primitivismo afro-americano”, até chegar à absorção desses artefatos pelos sistemas e pelos mercados de arte contemporâneos. O que mudou nesse ínterim? Que sistemas de valores serviram de gatilho para essa “passagem” ao multicultural? Quais confrontos estéticos foram assumidos e quais foram subsumidos pela historiografia moderno-contemporânea da arte? Para tentar evidenciar a tessitura destas questões, a pesquisa tem caráter histórico-iconográfico instalado num diálogo interdisciplinar que envolve a História, a Antropologia e a Sociologia através de autores como Aby Warburg, Sally Price, Adolfo Colombres, Estela Ocampo, Aníbal Quijano, Walter Mignolo, Philippe Dagen, Éric Michaud, Alfred Gell, Simon Gikandi, Achille Mbembe, Frank Willet, Inaga Shigemi, Hamid Dabashi, James Clifford e Edward Said, dentre outros.

Abstract Introduction: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), the main cellular component of the tumor microenvironment (TME), contribute to tumor metastasis. Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common malignancy among the elderly male population, and it is typically fatal when the disease progresses to metastasis and castration-resistant stage (CRPC). We have previously demonstrated that ADAM9 increased during PCa progression, and ROS is the critical mediator regulating ADAM9 expression in CRPC cells to promote tumor growth. In addition to membrane-anchored ADAM9, a secreted variant of ADAM9 (sADAM9) was recently identified in activated liver stromal cells that facilitated colon cancer liver metastasis. However, it is not clear whether sADAM9 is expressed by prostatic CAFs and, if so, whether it contributes to aggressive tumor phenotypes through tumor-stromal interactions. Objective: To investigate the sADAM9 variants in CAFs and to elucidate the effects of CAF-derived sADAM9 on the aggressiveness of PCa cells. Methods: Immunohistochemistry staining and ELISA of clinical samples were used to assess the expression of ADAM9 during PCa tumor progression. Laser microdissected tissues, primary cell lines, and experimental cell model of paired normal fibroblasts and CAF cells were analyzed. The effects of sADAM9 on CRPC progression were conducted in PC3 cells by WST-1 cell proliferation assay, transwell migration assay, and μ-slide chemotaxis assay. Immunoblot analyses of integrin β1 and migration-related kinases were used to verify the possible downstream signaling pathway of sADAM9. Results: Increased overall intensity of ADAM9 protein expression in PCa patients with metastasis compared. Elevated ADAM9 expression was observed in both cancerous epithelial cells and the tumor stroma. The average serum ADAM9 concentration measured by ELISA was 6.253 ± 0.448 ng/mL in BPH patient samples versus 10.89 ± 0.953 ng/mL in PCa patient samples. A smaller molecular weight (~50-kDa) of ADAM9 was detected in CM from cultured CAFs but not normal fibroblasts or PCa cell lines except for DU145 cells. Treatment of PC3 cells with sADAM9 induced a significant chemotactic migration while did not affect cell proliferation. Furthermore, a stark increase in activated integrin β1, phosphorylated focal adhesion kinase (p-FAK), and p-AKT, but not p-mTOR in PCa cells by sADAM9 suggested the induction of cell migration occurs through activation of the integrin β1/FAK signaling pathways. Conclusion: Herein, we have provided in vitro evidence to demonstrate the pro-metastatic function of sADAM9 from CAFs that facilitate the migration of CRPC cells through integrin receptor signaling, which could be partly responsible for the promotion of CRPC metastasis. Further molecular identification of controlling spliced ADAM9 expression in CAFs remains to investigate.
