Based on empirical research on training webinars, interviews, and promotional material from Vigilant Solutions, this paper investigates the surveillance regime enabled by platform policing: the implementation of cloud-based platforms, designed and run by private corporations, that provide mass surveillance-driven simulations for a range of police operations, including predictive policing, targeted surveillance, and tactical and strategic governance. Building on Amoore’s (2016) work on “cloud geographies,” this paper argues that the platform model embodied by Vigilant Solutions involves multivalent processes of de- and reterritorialization in which new technological and datalogical spaces are formed and these erode older societal boundaries of private, public, and state. Specifically, Vigilant Solutions leverages its multi-sided platform business model through the deterritorializing, cloud-based concatenations of surveillant technologies. It then argues that the resultant reterritorialized cloud space, which is accessible through its Vigilant Investigative Centre (VIC) platform, fuses mass surveillance data from diverse private, public, and state sources in a simulated geography. Further, the VIC furnishes to law enforcement an array of data analytics that exploits this cloud geography to enable a boundary-crossing surveillance regime of association analysis and proximal suspicion.

The positive link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning is a current paradigm in ecological science. However, little is known of how different attributes of species assemblages condition the quality of many services in real ecosystems affected by human impact. We explore the links between the attributes of a frugivore assemblage and the quantitative and qualitative components of its derived ecosystem service, seed dispersal, along a landscape-scale gradient of anthropogenic forest loss. Both the number and the richness of seeds being dispersed were positively related to frugivore abundance and richness. Seed dispersal quality, determined by the fine-scale spatial patterns of seed deposition, mostly depended on frugivore richness. In fact, richness was the only attribute of the frugivore assemblage affecting the probability of seed dispersal into deforested areas of the landscape. The positive relationships between frugivore richness per se (i.e. independent of frugivore abundance and composition) and all components of seed dispersal suggest the existence of functional complementarity and/or facilitation between frugivores. These links also point to the whole assemblage of frugivores as a conservation target, if we aim to preserve a complete seed dispersal service and, hence, the potential for vegetation regeneration and recovery, in human-impacted landscapes.

Space weather, geomagnetic, and ionospheric effects are major sources of Global Navigation Satellite System’s (GNSS) Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) service degradation. Researchers studying the problem often face an obstacle in missing large data sets comprising ionospheric effects variables and space weather ones for their studies. Here a formal assemblage method is proposed for data set assemblage for GNSS ionospheric effects assessment that utilises experimental sets of space weather/geomagnetic observations, and raw GNSS pseudorange observations polluted with uncorrected ionospheric delay effects to estimate Total Electron Content (TEC) as a target variable outlining the ionospheric effects on GNSS. The five Observations Quality Principles (OQP) are proposed for the observations to be used in statistical learning model development to comply to. The proposed assemblage method is demonstrated in a particular case study of an assembled data set for Darwin, NT, Australia, in sub-equatorial zone, using a tailored software developed in the R environment for scientific computing, and a freely available TEC estimation software. The assembled massive data obtained in the demonstration of the proposed method is provided in the open-access manner in support of the international scientific community.

Blended and networked learning discourses tend to focus on relations among learners, tutor/professor/teachers, peers, and material learning resources. While in higher educational contexts there is logic to this discursive practice, the roles of non-educator and technological actants in blended learning networks are often neglected or relegated to marginal positions. Non-educators’ contributions to commercial assemblages of blended learning networks can be perceived as out-sider performances, in which values are more aligned to neo-liberal, managerial practices. The roles of technological actants across contexts remain under theorised. We trace interactions among sales and service staff, technological actors, and learners in a commercial blended learning assemblage and problematise a commodified performance of blended learning in relation to blended and networked learning theorised practices. Using Callon’s notion of socio-technical capacities and assemblages, we redeploy attributes of a blended-learning network where interactions among sales and service staff, learners, technological artefacts and actants are described. The roles sales and service staff and technological agents in a second language enterprise perform blended learning as an assemblage that binds companies, human personnel, and learners. Using this approach, informed by material-semiotics, we follow the sequence of transformations that are involved in the production, distribution, and consumption of blended learning. Non-educator and non-human actants in sales, service, and administrative roles actively work to strengthen blended learning assemblages, making them more - or less - durable over time, while having little or nothing to do with supporting cooperative or collaborative learning activities central to theorised blended and network learning practices. Yet these actants perform key roles in performing blended learning as a product and a service in commercial settings that connect theories of blended learning.

This paper describes a recent initiative in NSW, Australia in the state government’s “fight against anti-social behaviour”. The Anti-Social Behaviour Pilot Project has developed a surveillance regime that exempts justice and human service public authorities from existing privacy laws so that these agencies can share risk intelligence about targeted young people for a more integrated and multi-agency intensive management of risk. A detailed account of the ensemble of statements that have shaped and made this highly politicised risk governance possible is outlined. The initiative seeks to establish a more flexible mode of surveillance capable of intervening into cases of persistent risks linked to the possibility of criminal offending and the risks of persistent offending that have both become linked to public safety. Two analytical frames are used to make sense of the project. Firstly, its nodal technique for integrating case management risk across governmental assemblages (police, health etc) is analysed as an exemplar of a post-panoptical surveillant inter-assemblage designed for the networked control of young people. Secondly, Agamben’s (1988, 2005) account of the state of exception is used to demonstrate how the project’s extra-legal administrative procedures for managing risks linked to “the public interest” establish a spatial arrangement for the control of young people based on decisions of exclusion that are paradoxically located inside and outside the law.

Assemblage thinking offers a new conceptual toolkit for analysing the relationship between society and space. However, major questions remain regarding both its ontological propositions and how it might be applied to the analysis of specific socio-spatial objects. This article contributes to these debates by using assemblage thinking to trace the long-term development of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. These territories have undergone a range of seemingly contradictory changes over recent decades. On one hand, expanded infrastructure and service provision and improved social outcomes have meant favelas have moved closer to, and in some cases surpassed, areas officially designated as “formal”. On the other, they continue to be heavily stigmatised, targeted by exceptional forms of governance, and subject to militarisation and abuse by police and non-state armed groups. Tracing these developments over time, I argue that the favela is best understood as an assemblage of heterogeneous, interacting elements that operate according to diverse logics. Despite continual pressures to deterritorialise, or break apart, a density of components and relations has ensured the continual reterritorialisation of the “favela” as a distinct object of perception and action over more than a century, with far reaching consequences for residents and the wider city.

This article offers a reading of internet-based activism or ‘hacktivism’ as a phenomenon that cannot be confined to the instrumental use of information technologies. It focuses on a subset of hacktivism – the distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack for political ends – that aims at making an internet host unavailable to its intended users. Since the early 2000s these attacks have been increasingly conducted by means of botnets – networks of infected computers that send bogus requests to a target website without the consent of their users. The capacity of botnets to engender a more-than-human politics is analyzed from two distinct theoretical angles. First, drawing from Deleuze and Guattari, the hacktivist DDoS is discussed as an assemblage of signifying and a-signifying components, voluntary and involuntary actions. Second, Gilbert Simondon’s notions of transindividuation and transduction allow for a conceptualization of hacktivism as a sociotechnical assemblage with a high degree of indetermination.

Abstract Value and how it is produced/created in public service organizations (PSOs) represents a current and significant issue for those researching and working in public sector management as well as public service users. Recently it has been suggested that value in PSOs is created rather than co-produced through a relationship between the service user and the service provider based on the service user’s wider life experience. Importantly, this definition shifts the emphasis from the PSO (the focus of value co-production) to the PSO service user and their wider life experience. This is by no means an agreed conceptualization; there are many and varied definitions of value and its creation process. In this article, we develop a philosophical foundation for the value creation process in PSOs, something we argue is fundamentally missing from current conceptualizations. To do this, we draw on the work of Deleuze and Guattari, repositioning the basis of value co-creation from a service logic to a logic of assemblage. We then apply this framework to a practical example of public service use to show how it can be used to make sense of reality.

Recently social constructionist and poststructuralist theories, and the methodologies they have informed, have been criticised for focusing excessively on human discourse and human action whilst overlooking the importance of the material and non-human world. Alongside these critiques we have witnessed the emergence of new-materialist theories and methodologies that attempt to address the perceived shortcomings of social constructionism and poststructuralism. This article aims to make a small contribution to these developments by introducing an experimental new-materialist method for analysing narrative data. The method, which was developed during a qualitative research project exploring the treatment of sexuality within a disability service, borrows from established methods of poststructuralist discourse analysis whilst also seeking to remain attentive to the material, affective and non-human forces that shape and affect the stories people tell.

La complexité des missions spatiales a augmenté de façon exponentielle, avec des exigences croissantes en matière de performance, de précision et de robustesse. Cette évolution est due à la fois aux progrès technologiques et à la nécessité de satisfaire de nouveaux défis, tels que les satellites en rotation (spinnés), l'assemblage en orbite et le service en orbite. Ces missions nécessitent l'intégration de systèmes mécaniques complexes, notamment des réservoirs de carburant liquide et ballotant, des systèmes de pointage précis et des structures flexibles qui présentent généralement des modes à basse fréquence, proches en fréquence et peu amortis. À mesure que les engins spatiaux deviennent plus modulaires avec plusieurs composants interconnectés tels que les antennes et les charges utiles, il est essentiel de modéliser et de contrôler avec précision ces systèmes multicorps complexes. Les interactions entre les structures flexibles et les systèmes de contrôle peuvent avoir un impact significatif sur les tâches critiques telles que le contrôle de l'attitude et la précision du pointage. Elle utilise des modèles de représentation fractionnaire linéaire (LFR) pour capturer efficacement la dynamique complexe et les incertitudes inhérentes à ces scénarios. La recherche commence par la dérivation d'un modèle LFR pour une poutre extsc{Euler}- extsc{Bernoulli} flexible et en rotation, prenant en compte les forces centrifuges et leur dépendance par rapport à la vitesse angulaire. Ce modèle à six degrés de liberté (DOFs) intègre les dynamiques de flexion, de traction et de torsion et est conçu pour être compatible avec l'approche des ports à deux entrées et deux sorties (TITOP), permettant de modéliser des systèmes multicorps complexes. Ce manuscrit présente également un modèle multicorps pour un scénario de mission de vaisseau spatial en rotation, suivi de la conception d'un système de contrôle.La thèse étend l'application des modèles LFR à une mission de service en orbite, en se concentrant sur le contrôle robuste de la dynamique d'attitude malgré les incertitudes et les paramètres variables du système. Une nouvelle approche de modélisation pour le mécanisme d'amarrage est introduite pour prendre en compte les propriétés dynamiques de rigidité et d'amortissement de la chaîne cinématique en boucle fermée formée par le véhicule chasseur et le véhicule cible. Un système de contrôle par rétroaction assurant une stabilité et des performances robustes pendant toutes les phases de la mission est proposé et validé par une analyse structurée des valeurs singulières.A partir de ces éléments, la thèse développe finalement une méthodologie complète pour la modélisation d'une mission d'assemblage en orbite impliquant un robot à bras multiples construisant une grande structure flexible. Ce travail aborde également la dynamique de couplage entre le robot et la structure évolutive tout en considérant les changements significatifs d'inertie et de flexibilité au cours du processus d'assemblage. Un algorithme d'optimisation de planification de tâches est finalement proposé pour assurer des opérations robotiques stables et efficaces, mettant en évidence l'efficacité de l'approche de modélisation basée sur la représentation LFR
Space missions have grown exponentially in complexity, with increasing demands for performance, precision and robustness. This evolution is driven by both technological advancements and the need for spacecraft to support diverse mission objectives, such as spinning spacecraft, on-orbit assembly and on-orbit servicing. These missions require the integration of large and complex designs, including dynamic fuel tanks, precise pointing systems and flexible structures that typically exhibit low-frequency, closely spaced and poorly damped modes. As spacecraft become more modular with multiple interconnected components like antennas and payloads, accurately modeling and controlling these complex multibody systems is crucial. The interactions between flexible structures and control systems can significantly impact mission-critical tasks such as attitude control and pointing accuracy, making it essential to address the coupled dynamics and external disturbances to ensure successful mission outcomes.In order to tackle these problems, this thesis presents a unified approach to the modeling and control of flexible multibody systems in space missions. It utilizes linear fractional representation (LFR) models to effectively capture the complex dynamics and uncertainties inherent in these scenarios. The research begins with the derivation of an LFR model for a flexible and spinning extsc{Euler}- extsc{Bernoulli} beam, fully accounting for centrifugal forces and their dependence on the angular velocity. This six degrees of freedom model integrates bending, traction and torsion dynamics and is designed to be compatible with the Two-Input-Two-Output Ports (TITOP) approach, enabling the modeling of complex multibody systems. This manuscript also introduces a multibody model for a spinning spacecraft mission scenario, followed by the design of a control system.The thesis further extends the application of LFR models to an on-orbit servicing mission, focusing on the robust control of attitude dynamics despite uncertainties and varying system parameters. A novel modeling approach for a docking mechanism is introduced, capturing the dynamic stiffness and damping properties of the closed-loop kinematic chain formed by the chaser and target spacecraft. The design of a feedback control system ensuring robust stability and performance across all mission phases is proposed, validated through structured singular value analysis.Building on this foundation, the thesis finally develops a comprehensive methodology for modeling an on-orbit assembly mission involving a multi-arm robot constructing a large flexible structure. This work also addresses the coupling dynamics between the robot and the evolving structure while considering significant changes in inertia and flexibility during the assembly process. A path optimization algorithm is ultimately proposed to ensure stable and efficient robotic operations, highlighting the effectiveness of the LFR-based modeling approach

Les services en orbite pourraient transformer le secteur des activités spatiales au cours des prochaines décennies. La disponibilité limitée de créneaux orbitaux en orbite géostationnaire et la surpopulation de certaines régions orbitales en orbite terrestre basse représentent un défi de taille pour les opérateurs tant commerciaux que gouvernementaux. Le danger que représente pour les missions opérationnelles les débris spatiaux est un autre problème clef à résoudre. Les services en orbite promettent une solution potentielle à de nombreux problèmes. Les activités de services en orbite, en particulier l'entretien en orbite et l'élimination des débris spatiaux, ne sont toutefois pas complètement couvertes par l'actuel droit de l'espace, tant d'un point de vue de la loi internationale, que de celui de la pratique contractuelle commerciale. Comment le droit va-t-il réguler ce mouvement de multiplication des activités orbitales ? Quelle sera la place des États vis- à-vis des services privés ? Comment le contrat de service en orbite sera-t-il construit ? En cas de services internationaux sur un même objet, quel sera le droit applicable ? Quelles seront les obligations des opérateurs de services en orbite ? Mes recherches portent sur le développement du service orbital commercial résultant de la multiplication des acteurs spatiaux (entreprises privées et nouveaux États spatiaux)
On-orbit services could transform the space industry in the coming decades. The limited availability of orbital slots in geostationary orbit and the overpopulation of certain orbital regions in low Earth orbit represent a major challenge for bath commercial and government operators. Another key problem to address is the danger posed to operational missions by the growing population of space debris. On-orbit services promise a potential solution to many problems. However, on-orbit service activities, in particular on-orbit maintenance and the removal of space debris, are not completely covered by current space law, bath from the point of view of international law, than that of commercial contractual practice. How will the law regulate this movement of multiplication of orbital activities? What will be the place of States vis-à-vis private services? How will the on-orbit service contract be constructed? ln the case of international services on the same abject, what will be the applicable law? What will be the obligations of on-orbit service operators? My research focus on the development of the commercial orbital service resulting from the multiplication of space players (private companies and new space States)

Notre travail s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une problématique générale articulée autour du thème de l’assemblage dans le secteur des activités de services, et s’intéresse notamment au concept novateur de l’assemblage dynamique des chaînes logistiques multiservices. Face à l’ampleur du champ d’investigation dans les services et à l’hétérogénéité des activités possibles, nous avons circonscrit notre étude à un seul secteur : celui de l’industrie du voyage et nous nous sommes interrogés sur les principaux rôles et fonctions d’un nouvel acteur que nous qualifions de « pivot assembleur », d’une part pour la création des chaînes logistiques multiservices, et d’autre part pour leur pilotage dynamique. Nous avons tenté de répondre à une question de recherche centrale: « Quelles compétences clés permettent au pivot assembleur d’une chaîne logistique multiservices d’en assurer l’assemblage dynamique ? ». Les principaux apports de notre travail ont été d’une part de proposer une véritable compétence organisationnelle d’assembleur de chaîne logistique multiservices, mobilisée autour de quatre dimensions, et d’autre part de contribuer plus largement à la recherche sur le management opérationnel des services, et tout particulièrement sur celui des « service supply chains », ainsi que d’aider les différents gestionnaires et assembleurs de chaînes logistiques en général, à mieux prendre en compte leurs aspects dynamiques et temporels
Our job registers as part of general problems articulated around the topic of the assemblage in the area of the activities of services, and is notably interested in the innovative concept of the dynamic assembly of the multiservice logistical chains. Facing the largeness of the field of investigation in services and in the heterogeneity of possible activities, we circumscribed our study in the single area: the one of travel industry and we have tried to figure out the main roles and functions of a new actor we describe as « pivot assembleur », on the one hand for the creation of multiservice logistical chains, and on the other hand for their dynamic piloting. We tried to answer a central research question: “Which core competences enable the multiservice logistical chains “pivot assembleur” to ensure its dynamic assembly?” The main contributions of our work have been on the one hand to offer a true organizational competence for a multiservice logistical chains of chain assembler, mobilized around four dimensions, and on the other hand, to contribute more broadly at the research about the service operations management, and particularly on service supply chains, as well as to help different managers and supply chain’s assemblers generally, to better take account of dynamic and temporal aspects

Pendant les dernières années, le réseau cellulaire est devenu accessible presque partout. Pour compléter ce réseau cellulaire terrestre, plusieurs systèmes basés sur des satellites à basse orbite (LEO Low Earth Orbit) et moyenne orbite (MEO Medium Earth Orbit) ont été développés pour offrir une couverture globale. Les services multimédias sont largement demandés sur une échelle globale.
Notre but est de développer une couche d'accès MAC au canal satellitaire tout en respectant les contraintes de la constellation LEO. Un grand nombre d'utilisateurs de différents types vont essayer d'accéder au canal satellite (sens montant) afin d'envoyer leurs paquets. Il faut distribuer les ressources disponibles entre les différents utilisateurs de façon à respecter la QoS de chaque utilisateur et à minimiser le gaspillage. Nous avons traité dans cette thèse les ponts suivants :
·Nous avons adopté les techniques CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) et TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) pour définir les protocoles d'accès proposés en système LEOS. Ces techniques sont adaptées afin d'être utilisées d'une manière efficace dans le cas spécifique de satellites LEO (long RTD (Round Trip Delay), Handover, ).
·Nous avons utilisé un contrôle d'admission pour les différents types de services qui agit au niveau d'appel afin d'accepter un maximum d'utilisateurs de différents types tout en respectant la QoS de chacun. Ce contrôle utilise une fonction à capacité équivalente adaptée aux différents contextes de nos études.
·Nous avons défini des services au niveau MAC d'une façon générique. Les services sont supportés au niveau MAC par des MTCs (MAC Transfer Capabilities) afin de garantir la QoS demandée par chaque service. Nous avons proposé des MTCs qui supportent tous les services et applications possibles.
·Nous avons étudié le système pour des utilisateurs hétérogènes ce qui rend l'intégration de services nécessaire. La comparaison dépend de l'intégration et de la QoS de chaque utilisateur. Le but est toujours de maximiser la capacité totale du système.
·Nous avons étudié le multiplexage de services et l'allocation de ressources pour les différents protocoles d'accès. Des techniques d'ordonnancement et de partage de ressources sont proposées afin d'atteindre pour un protocole d'accès donné la performance maximale.
L'intégration de satellite avec l'UMTS et l'utilisation de l'ATM au sein du réseau de cur sont deux facteurs essentiels qui dirigent nos propositions sur la couche MAC. Les services vus par cette couche sont appelés les MTCs (MAC Transfer Capabilities) et doivent se coordonner avec les services de l'UMTS et l'ATM. Le choix est basé aussi sur les sources de trafics utilisées dans les différents chapitres.

Le soudage par point et le collage sont largement utilisés dans la jonction des tôles, telles que l'assemblage de caisses de voiture. Récemment, le soudage par point et le collage ont été combinés pour faire le joint hybride soudé-collé, qui est utilisé pour joindre les aciers à hautes résistances et améliorer la rigidité et la résistance aux chocs des corps de voiture. Dans l'industrie, l'évaluation de la conception avant prototype nécessite des modèles fiables de comportement en termes de prédiction des comportements mécaniques. Le modèle élément finis de joint soudé-collé est un nouveau défi car il doit combiner les modèles de soudage par points et les modèles de collage.Cette thèse se concentre sur la modélisation du joint soudé-collé par de l'acier DP600 et avec l’adhésif structurel SikaPower®-498. La modélisation peur utiliser un modèle solide ou un modèle simplifié (élément coque plus élément de connexion). Le modèle solide permet de prédire le comportement de spécimen à petite échelle: KS2 et cisaillement. Le modèle simplifié peut être utilisé pour prédire la performance des composants de grande dimension avec un coût de calcul acceptable.En ce qui concerne le modèle solide, le comportement du joint soudé et du joint collé sont identifiés séparément calibrés sur un spécimen KS2 sous trajets de chargement différents. Les inhomogénéités dans la zone de fusion et la zone affectée par la chaleur du soudage par point sont prises en compte par l'intermédiaire de facteurs d'échelle applique à la contrainte d'écoulement du métal de base. Les facteurs d'échelle sont determinés par identification inverse. Le modèle de Gurson est utilisé pour prédire la rupture ductile en zone affectée par le chaleur et dans le métal base tandis que le modèle de zone cohésive est utilisé pour simuler la rupture quasi-fragile dans l'interface de la zone de fusion. Les paramètres du modèle de zone cohésive sont identifiés par l'intégrale J à la pointe de fissure de la soudure. Des éléments de zone cohésive avec une loi traction-séparation sont également utilisés pour prédire le décollement adhésif. Les paramètres du modèle sont identifiés par des essais du type « Double Cantilevered Beam » et « End Notched Flexure », correspondant aux mode I et mode II respectivement. Le modèle élaboré pour le soudage par est associé avec le modèle de collage pour prédire le comportement et la rupture du joint soudé-collé.En ce qui concerne le modèle simplifié, des éléments de connexion sont utilisés pour prédire les endommagement des soudure par point. Les paramètres de l'élément de connexion sont identifiés par des tests de KS2 sous différents trajets de chargement. Enfin, les modèles simplifiés d'un soudage, d'un collage, et d'un soudé-collé sont validés sur une jonction en T qui peut représenter le pilier-B de carrosserie de la voiture
Spot welding and adhesive bonding are widely used in joining of sheet metals, such as assembling of car body-in-white. Recently, spot weld and adhesive are combined to make weld bonded joint, which is employed to join Advanced High Strength Steel to improve the stiffness and crashworthiness of car body. In industry, the assessment of designing prior to prototype requires reliable constitutive models in terms of the prediction of the mechanical behaviors. The FE model of weld bonded joint is a new challenge as it should combine the models of spot welding and the models of adhesive. This thesis focuses on the modeling of weld bonded joint by DP600 steel and structural adhesive SikaPower®-498. The model of weld bonded joint consists of solid model and simplified model. The former is devoted to predict the behavior of weld bonded joint on small-scale specimen: KS2 and lap-shear. The latter can be used to predict the performance of large components with acceptable computational cost. As regards solid model, spot welded joint and adhesive bonded joint behaviors are separately identified by KS2 specimen under different loading path. The inhomogeneities in fusion zone and heat affected zone of spot weld are taken into account via the scaling of the flow stress of base metal. The scaling factors are calibrated by inverse identification. Gurson model is used to predict ductile fracture in heat affected zone and base metal while cohesive zone model is employed to simulate quasi-brittle fracture in the interface of fusion zone. The parameters of cohesive zone model are identified by the J-integral at the notch tip of spot weld crack. Cohesive zone elements with traction-separation-laws are also used to predict adhesive debonding. Model parameters are calibrated by Double Cantilevered Beam and End Notched Flexure specimens, corresponding to Mode-I and Mode-II fracture respectively. The model developed for spot weld is associated with adhesive model to predict weld bonded joint. As regards simplified model, connector elements are employed to predict the damage of spot weld. The parameters of connector element are identified by KS2 tests under different loading paths. Finally, the simplified model of spot welding, adhesive bonding, and weld-bonding are validated by T-joint which can represent the B-pillar of car body

AbstractIn this chapter we examine a foreign language learning environment in a community-engaged setting in a Canadian city through a new materialist lens. As part of a service-learning project, Canadian students of Finnish language and culture visit a Finnish language seniors’ centre regularly to participate in different activities and spend time with the Finnish-speaking seniors. We examine the assemblage of the participants (seniors and students) and one artefact, a map, and offer a close analysis of the intra-action that takes place during one visit at the centre. In our analysis, our service-learning collaboration does not merely give a voice and agency to seniors. Rather, the seniors actively take the opportunity to voice their knowledge, and doing that, give a voice to an old Finnish school map, which retells stories of the seniors’ past in intra-action. Meanwhile the students also gain new knowledge.

AbstractThis chapter deploys assemblage theory and thinking to bring together a unique set of insights on the seabed ranging from the ecological, to legal, practice to theoretical. It does so with a particular aim in mind: to integrate debates pertinent to understanding the frontier space of the sea floor. Whilst there are increasing calls for interdisciplinary integration in the marine sciences, combining the natural and social sciences research on the space of the seabed and its potential for mining tends to be siloed with work addressing component parts of such possible processes: ecosystem and ecosystem service aspects, legal dimensions, and geopolitical aspects, to name but a few. Whilst these contributions touch upon intersecting issues (society and environment; law and economics, and so on) they remained centered on particular disciplinary and scientific offerings to understanding the seabed and prospect of seabed mining. This chapter offers a thoroughly ‘joined up’ approach, which presents a prism through which to better understand the issues at stake in venturing to the new vertical frontiers of ocean extraction.

Imbued with the utopian spirit of social engineering, mental health professionals mobilized to implement their plans for psychological transformation. Nevertheless, as psychiatrists in particular discovered, this was a project that the revolutionary leadership itself planned to direct, and in many cases they were forced to take a backseat to its sui generis reeducation experiments. The end result was the unmistakable politicization of psychological change, as an assemblage of psychiatric concepts, language, and practice imbued official expectations and popular experiences of the revolutionary moment.

This chapter examines American national parks during Theodore Roosevelt's administration. A few national parks were established during Roosevelt's presidency, some notable and some less so. In 1902, he signed into law a measure establishing Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. In June 1906, Roosevelt approved a bill establishing Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The other national parks established during Roosevelt's presidency were a curious assemblage of places where Congress succumbed to what a longtime leader of the National Park Service once described as the “parochial enthusiasm of local politicians.” However, Roosevelt's impact on the national parks cannot be measured solely by the number of parks established during his time in office, because a goodly number of the many forest reserves, game ranges, and national monuments he established eventually became national parks.

The “Maytag repairman” is the familiar image of field service. When servicing electronic equipment such as computers, however, the job is significantly more demanding than fixing washing machines. Not only are computers more complex than most other machines, they are also more central to the ongoing operations of an organization. Increasingly, everything an organization does depends upon electronic equipment in some way. Large computer systems are often expected to run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When computers are such an integral part of an organization’s operations, maintaining the equipment is tantamount to keeping a person’s heart beating and blood circulating. Thus, unlike the idle television caricature, field service engineers are increasingly viewed as the paramedics for electronics who can quickly and ably respond to system crashes. At the same time that field service has become more demanding, the complexity of the job has increased. The “machinery” of the modern organization is less often composed of gears turning, typewriters clattering, and paper being shuffled. Instead, the sights and sounds of the modern organization consist of screens glowing, keys clicking, and, to the uninitiated, an assemblage of opaque, “black boxes.” Inside these boxes is a miniature world that gives no clue as to the nature of its inner workings. The field service engineer’s (FE) job and function have been growing while the size of the technology itself has been shrinking. His or her skill is less often exercised as a skilled craftworker in the repair of a part and more often as a skilled analyst who can understand the abstract workings and nature of electronics to identify the problem and trace it to the malfunctioning component. The required manual skills are often minimal, just enough dexterity to swap out a bad part for a good one usually suffices. At the same time, the scope of field service has expanded from just repairing worn and broken or defective parts to collecting information about design defects and debugging equipment that may have been released prematurely.

The symbols and rituals of Polish Catholicism structured much of the opposition’s work and discourse. When one cherished leader, Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, was violently murdered by the Security Service in late 1984, he became a martyr for the opposition across religious differences. The chapter presents a media archaeology of his voice to suggest that the priest’s power lies at the nexus of sound technology, sound theology, and sound musicology. Historical recordings offer intimate access to his sermons and Polish-language chant and intimate recollections of his person. His murder was commemorated in compositions by Krzysztof Knittel, Andrzej Panufnik, and Muslimgauze. The analysis of his voice also unpacks his 1984 burial through ethnographic encounter at the 2009 reenactment of his funeral. The portrait sprawls and shows how the opposition, as a media assemblage, was concerned with bodily vulnerability.

No technology can be reduced to one invention or even to a cluster of inventions. The smallest component of any device, something so small as a screw, represents a long train of invention. Somebody conceived of a lever, someone else thought of a ramp, another person dreamed up a circular staircase. The simple screw thread merges all of those ideas, and it followed all of them. A contrivance made of more than one part is a system woven from those parts. Take a pair of scissors. It consists of just three correlated members—two blades with handles on one end and the bolt that holds them together. Each part represents a skein of invention, and the whole is a device with an efficacy that we would normally not see in the parts alone. System is a word that takes on new overtones in the modern engineering vocabulary. Yet the modern sense of the word is no different from the dictionary definition, “an assemblage with correlated members.” As machines become more complex, however, their systemic characters become increasingly important in the processes of conceiving, designing, and producing them. But the systemic nature of technology does not end with the particular device. Think for a minute about automobiles. An automobile engine is a large, complex system in itself, but it cannot be designed in isolation from the rest of the car. The engine, radiator, transmission, brakes, airconditioning, suspension, and much more all act in concert to get you to work or to play. And the systemic character does not stop there. The automobile interacts with life around it. Questions of service, noise, air pollution, parking, and pedestrian safety all come to rest on the shoulders of automobile makers. That particular assemblage of correlated members reaches even beyond the automobile and its immediate infrastructure. The finished automobile reshapes the society in which it moves. The layout of cities, the design of homes, and even the scaling of the nuclear family have been shaped to this exceedingly complex technology, and that process of change continues still.

A standardized recipe can be defined as guidance for the con­stant preparation of an assemblage of food or drink at an expected qual­ity. The use of standardized recipes is justified for the reasons of inventory control, creativity, simplicity and consistency. The standard recipe or techni­cal sheet includes certain irreplaceable elements: recipe name, yield, portion size, weight/amount, measure/unit, ingredients, instructions, and notes. The technical sheet is one of the most powerful documents in a food service operation. The benefits of the standardized recipes are vast. It is the basis for the planning of the kitchen and its inventory. It enables the chef to pre­dict and control the quality, quantity and portion cost of the final product by stating all the ingredients and preparation details. There is an increase in consumer satisfaction due to the constant delivery of high-quality and con­sistent food. There is better control over the yield and the number of the pro­duced portions. Standard recipes are important for faster training of food service employees because of the supply of relevant information and set standards ensuring logical flow of work and increasing labor efficiency. And finally, the risk of foodborne illnesses is limited if the instructions on techni­cal sheets are accurately followed.

A series of large-scale and integrated archaeological science projects are required to stimulate research into these important topics. To engage fully with Science in Scottish Archaeology iv these questions data of sufficient richness is required that is accessible, both within Scotland and internationally. The RCAHMS’ database Canmore provides a model for digital dissemination that should be built on.  Integration: Archaeological science should be involved early in the process of archaeological investigation and as a matter of routine. Resultant data needs to be securely stored, made accessible and the research results widely disseminated. Sources of advice and its communication must be developed and promoted to support work in the commercial, academic, research, governmental and 3rd sectors.  Knowledge exchange and transfer: knowledge, data and skills need to be routinely transferred and embedded across the archaeological sector. This will enable the archaeological science community to better work together, establishing routes of communication and improving infrastructure. Improvements should be made to communication between different groups including peers, press and the wider public. Mechanisms exist to enable the wider community to engage with, and to feed into, the development of the archaeological and scientific database and to engage with current debates. Projects involving the wider community in data generation should be encouraged and opportunities for public engagement should be pursued through, for example, National Science Week and Scottish Archaeology Month.  Networks and forums: A network of specialists should be promoted to aid collaboration, provide access to the best advice, and raise awareness of current work. This would be complemented by creating a series inter-disciplinary working groups, to discuss and articulate archaeological science issues. An online service to match people (i.e. specialist or student) to material (whether e.g. environmental sample, artefactual assemblage, or skeletal assemblage) is also recommended. An annual meeting should also be held at which researchers would be able to promote current and future work, and draw attention to materials available for analysis, and to specialists/students looking to work on particular assemblages or projects. Such meetings could be rolled into a suitable public outreach event.

Valles Caldera National Preserve (VALL) encompasses 35,977 ha (88,900 ac) in the Jemez Mountains of north-central New Mexico and is surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest, the Pueblo of Santa Clara, and Bandelier National Monument. VALL’s explosive volcanic origin, about 1.23 million years ago, formed the Valles Caldera—a broad, 19- to 24-km (12- to 15-mi) wide circular depression. It is one of the world’s best examples of a young caldera (in geologic time) and serves as the model for understanding caldera resurgence worldwide. A series of resurgent eruptions and magmatic intrusive events followed the original explosion, creating numerous volcanic domes in present day VALL—one of which is Redondo Peak at an elevation of 3,430 m (11,254 ft), which is the second highest peak in the Jemez Mountains. In fact, VALL in its entirety is a high-elevation preserve that hosts a rich assemblage of vegetation, wildlife, and volcanic resources. The National Park Service (NPS) Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program selected VALL to pilot its new NRCA project series. VALL managers and the NRCA Program selected seven focal study resources for condition evaluation. To help us understand what is causing change in resource conditions, we selected a subset of drivers and stressors known or suspected of influencing the preserve’s resources. What is causing change in resource conditions? Mean temperatures during the spring and summer months are increasing, but warming is slower at VALL than for neighboring areas (e.g., Bandelier National Monument). The proportion of precipitation received as snow has declined. From 2000 to 2018, forest pests damaged or killed 75% of the preserve’s forested areas. Only small, forested areas in VALL were affected by forest pests after the 2011 Las Conchas and the 2013 Thompson Ridge fires. The all-sky light pollution model and the sound pressure level model predict the lowest degree of impacts from light and sound to be in the western half of the preserve.
