In his recent work, Harry Frankfurt has defended a theory according to which an agent’s practical reasons are determined by what she happens to love. In the first section of this article, I will describe some of the awkward consequences of this view. For instance, it would turn out that not all rapists would have reasons not to rape their victims. The second section of the article explains in detail Frankfurt’s argument for his theory of reasons. The crux of this argument is that, because reasons have to be attached to significant life-changes, any attempt to show that there were love independent reasons would need to be based on a prior evaluation of significance. However, such evaluations can only be based on what we already love, or so Frankfurt argues. From this threat of circularity, Frankfurt concludes that there cannot be reasons outside the realm of the objects of our loves. The rest of the article is a critical examination of Frankfurt’s argument. It first constructs an analogical argument for reasons for beliefs. In that case, both the unacceptable consequences of the argument and its basic flaws are more transparent. It is clear that our prior beliefs are not the only epistemic standard by which the justificatory role of new experiences is to be evaluated. In the end of the article, I argue that, likewise, our prior loving attitudes cannot be the only relevant standard for assessing the significance of life-changes. This is why our reasons are not constrained by what we love.

‘The crucified people’ became a key theological concern in the writings of Jon Sobrino SJ in the 1990s. This article examines how and why Sobrino made this concern a central element in his theology at the time. Section 2 discusses what Sobrino has described as his ‘awakening from the sleep of inhumanity’ in the 1970s as he encountered liberation theology in El Salvador following his doctoral studies in Frankfurt. Section 3 examines three figures in the Salvadoran Church who influenced Sobrino: Ignacio Ellacuría (assassinated 1989); Oscar Romero (assassinated 1980); and Rutilio Grande (assassinated 1977). All three paid with their lives for their work in the Church. Section 4 examines the understanding of the crucified people offered by Ellacuría in 1978, and the encouragement for this idea in the words of Romero and Grande in 1977. Sections 5 and 6 turn to the use of the term as used by Sobrino himself. Section 5 argues that Sobrino’s early Christological writings are quite cautious in their use of this idea. The murder of Ellacuría by the military in November 1989 at the Central American University—alongside the killing of five fellow Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her daughter—appears to be the pivotal event that prompts Sobrino’s bolder discussion in publications from 1989 onwards (Section 6).

The neutron activation technique is a well established method to measure neutron capture cross sections relevant for the s-process. The 7Li(p,n) reaction at Ep = 1912 keV is often used as a neutron source since the energy distribution of the emitted neutrons closely resembles a Maxwell-Boltzmann spectrum of kBT = 25 keV, mimicking the 22Ne(α,n) phase in TP-AGB stars. The weak s-process, which takes place in massive stars, can reach energies up to kBT = 90 keV. Neutron spectra corresponding to a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with kBT > 25 keV cannot be produced by the 7Li(p,n) reaction directly. We developed a method to obtain quasi-Maxwellian neutron capture cross sections over a wide energy range by combining a set of spectrum average cross sections measured at six different proton energies and distances between the lithium target and the sample. The measured spectrum averaged cross section can be used to calculate the Maxwellian-Averaged cross-section (MACS) from kBT = 25 keV to kBT = 90 keV. Over the last two years neutron capture cross sections on over 20 isotopes have been measured at Goethe University Frankfurt using this methodology. An overview of the current experimental method, challenges during data analysis and the first results are presented.

Hegel’s Political Philosophy in Joachim Ritter’s InterpretationThis article outlines Joachim Ritter’s attempt to detach Hegel’s political and social philosophy from its Marxist interpretation. The first section examines the differences between the reception of Hegel’s legacy by Ritter and by the Frankfurt School. The latter views Hegel primarily as a forerunner of Marx, while Ritter perceives Hegel as committed theorist and advocate of modern state and civil society. The second section focuses on Ritter’s attitude towards the post-revolutionary society. In particular, it explores Ritter’s interpretation of the concept of modern university and interest in history as a reaction to rapid modernization. The last section turns to Ritter’s criticism of the rejection of the contemporary social and political realities – represented by both right-winged reactionaries and far-left progressivists – and also demonstrates Ritter and his School’s contribution to intellectual legitimization of the post-war German Federal Republic.

As a reaction to the increasing terrorist threat in Europe, the German Parliament (Bundestag) passed a law penalizing the preparation of terrorist acts endangering the state: § 89a German Criminal Code (StGB). The Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main (LG Frankfurt) was the first to apply this section to a case where a young man was accused of building a pipe bomb. Upon his conviction, the defendant appealed to the German Federal Court of Justice (BGH), claiming § 89a StGB to be unconstitutional. The BGH reviewed whether the statute was in conformity with the principles of the German Constitution (GG), including the principle of legal certainty and appropriateness. It held that these principles were fulfilled, if stricter requirements are applied regarding the mens rea in order to counterbalance the broad actus reus. It decided that the Regional Court had not fulfilled this particular requirement and quashed the conviction insofar. This case and § 89a StGB caused ripples amongst legal scholars, especially due to the unusual penalization of preparatory acts and the broad scope of the statute's application. This case also produced an unprecedented change within the judge's bench.

Abstract It has become almost a cliché to say that we live in a post-truth world; that people of all trades speak with an indifference to truth. Speaking with an indifference to how things really are is famously regarded by Harry Frankfurt as the essence of bullshit. This paper aims to contribute to the philosophical and theoretical pragmatics discussion of bullshit. The aim of the paper is to offer a new theoretical analysis of what bullshit is, one that is more encompassing than Frankfurt’s original characterization. I part ways with Frankfurt in two points. Firstly, I propose that we should not analyze bullshit in intentional terms (i.e. as indifference). Secondly, I propose that we should not analyze it in relation to truth. Roughly put, I propose that bullshit is best characterized as speaking with carelessness toward the evidence for one’s conversational contribution. I bring forward, in the third section, a battery of examples that motivate this characterization. Furthermore, I argue that we can analyze speaking with carelessness toward the evidence in Gricean terms as a violation of the second Quality maxim. I argue that the Quality supermaxim, together with its subordinate maxims, demand that the speaker is truthful (contributes only what she believes to be true) and reliable (has adequate evidence for her contribution). The bullshitter’s main fault lies in being an unreliable interlocutor. I further argue that we should interpret what counts as adequate evidence, as stipulated by the second Quality Maxim, in contextualist terms: the subject matter and implicit epistemic standards determine how much evidence one needs in order to have adequate evidence. I contrast this proposed reading with a subjectivist interpretation of what counts as having adequate evidence and show that they give different predictions. Finally, working with a classic distinction, I argue that we should not understand bullshit as a form of deception but rather as a form of misleading speech.

Critical Theory and Authoritarian Populism (2018; University of Westminster Press), edited by Jeremiah Morelock, brings together the work of sociologists, political scientists, historians, and philosophers attempting to revitalise the empirical and theoretical work on antidemocratic trends of the early Frankfurt School, or Institute for Social Research. They do so in the analytic context of contemporary, globally observed ‘authoritarian populist’ movements, in which political (often right-wing) agitators pit a symbolically-constructed national ‘people’ against purported corrupt elites and minority scapegoat groups. The chapters cover wide ground and can be contrasted to some extent in terms of whether they frame the contemporary moment as highly similar to the era of the Great Depression and 1930s Fascism, or emphasise the unique nature of neoliberalism as a historical backdrop. Notable strengths of the volume include Morelock’s systematic introductory overview of early Frankfurt School work, as well as a thematic section on “Digital Authoritarianism” which resurrects the Institute’s tradition of propaganda content analysis for the social media era. Critical Theory and Authoritarian Populism offers a highly comprehensive picture of the current geopolitical nightmare and the conceptual tools for attacking it, and serves as a welcome corrective to several recent simplistic applications of the authoritarianism concept in popular science outlets.

Objective: Development of postoperative scars is often a problem. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of gel containing Allium cepa extract, allantoin and heparin (Contractubex, Merz Pharmaceuticals GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany) in reducing scarring after a caesarean section by comparing it with a control group, and also intra-individually, using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS). Method: A total of 120 patients who underwent a second elective caesarean delivery and who presented with hypertrophic scar development after their first caesarean section were included in the study. A scar revision was performed for all patients during the second caesarean operation. Patients in the study group (n=60) were advised to apply the topical scar gel postoperatively for a period of 6 months. The control group (n=60) received no treatment. Results: Significant reductions were observed in the vascularity, pigmentation and height subgroups of the VSS for those in the group who continued the treatment to 24 weeks. An intra-individual analysis showed that the gel effectively reduced scarring after the second caesarean section. Conclusion: The prophylactic use of the gel to reduce scar development offers better results for vascularity, pigmentation and height subscales of the VSS after surgical removal of the primary caesarean scar during the second caesarean section. The results were better both intra-individually, and also in comparison with the control group and support the use of a gel containing Allium cepa extract, allantoin and heparin to reduce scarring after a caesarean section.

This article explores an age-old form of dialogical learning, havruta, which has been employed by Jews throughout the centuries to study the Torah and the Talmud, and evaluates the experiment of extending havruta from a couple of fellow students (haverim) to an international, multi-religious group reading philosophical texts together, and transferring the learning process from the Jewish house of study (in Hebrew: beit ha-Midrash, in German: Lehrhaus) to an online environment. Methodologically, the experiences from the online havruta are brought into a theory-practice feedback loop and are discussed from various theoretical angles: (1) The first section introduces how havruta was conducted traditionally and how Franz Rosenzweig, who in 1920 founded the Frankfurt Lehrhaus and invited Martin Buber to offer lecture courses, advanced havruta. (2) The second section explains how Rosenzweig’s pedagogical principles as distilled from his writings on education are applied and modified in the above-mentioned contemporary online reading group. (3) The third section draws on Buber’s philosophy of dialogue, Juhani Pallasmaa’s architectural theory and Michel Chion’s film theory in order to investigate the epistemological and pedagogical significance of different modes of listening, asking, and responding, and the role of trust for dialogical learning in local and online learning communities.

In the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period, the European continent was characterised by a vast mobility of skilled and unskilled labour: Italian merchants established themselves in Bruges and in other commercial centres, German soldiers and craftsmen intermittently lived in Italy, merchants from many different nations met at trade fairs which regularly took place in Frankfurt am Main and in other cities and countless journeymen went on the road before they established themselves as master craftsmen somewhere. This migration was accompanied by an exchange of commodities, technologies and ideas across all political borders. One may think that these different exchange processes would have led to an economic convergence on the European continent. Why this was not, or was only to a certain extent the case, will be discussed in the second section of this essay.

Active management funds are associated with higher transaction costs, which is something that has been acknowledged for a long time. The question is whether these costs can compensate with a higher return. This paper investigates how two active strategies, momentum and growth investing, have performed in relation to a passive index. To test this, we investigated the Frankfurt stock market during 2005-2020 on stocks from the automobile sector. By doing this, the purpose was investigated whether growth and momentum has had a higher risk-adjusted return than the benchmark index during the 15 years of observation. The result showed that both growth and momentum performed better than a passive index fund, despite its costly variables. However, the risk adjusted return was not significant higher. This study includes transaction costs in its calculation, which other studies ignore and focus on one industry with a consistent benchmark index for the same industry. By doing this, we believe that the test will be more accurate, and avoid potential industry effects on return and hopefully contribute with new thoughts on the subject.

The European banking crisis and the subsequent euro crisis triggered considerable shocks in Germany’s financial world which fully revealed the weaknesses of the German banking sector. Changing regulation and the low-interest-rate policy from the European Central Bank put the bank’s business models into question. Furthermore, delays became apparent in the improvement of Frankfurt’s sector-specific infrastructure. Frankfurt’s resilience in the crises results from the entangled agency by various actors at local, national, and European levels. Employment in the financial sector at large remained rather stable. Frankfurt increased its role as a European centre in bank and insurance supervision and considerably improved its infrastructure in higher education and research as well as in the digital economy. Although still fragile in various aspects, Frankfurt may become a potential winner on the European continent from the forthcoming Brexit.

This chapter revisits the intellectual resources marshalled by critical international theory. It starts with the Frankfurt School and Max Horkheimer’s distinction between two conceptions of theory—critical and traditional. The chapter then turns to extended discussions of German idealism and historical materialism—in particular, Kant, Hegel, and Marx—to outline the normative and dialectical forms of social philosophy inherited by the Frankfurt School. Arising out of Kant’s transcendental philosophy was a form of critique concerned with the epistemic conditions under which the reasoning subject attains a pure intelligence detached from experience. This provided the context in which Hegel and Marx introduced their dialectical social theories. The chapter’s final section revisits the Kantian Enlightenment, which has exerted such an important influence over critical international theory. Running through the chapter is the transformative role critical philosophy plays in restoring freedom and reason to the world.

With contributions from 35 leading experts in the field, The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy and Psychoanalysis provides the definitive guide to this interdisciplinary field. The book comprises eight sections, each providing an overview of current thinking at the interface between philosophy and psychoanalysis through original contributions that will shape the future of the debate in its area. The first section covers the philosophical pre-history of the psychoanalytic unconscious, including discussions of Spinoza, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche. The next three present evaluations of psychoanalysis. Thus, the second examines how psychoanalysis was received and developed in the twentieth century by Merleau-Ponty, Wittgenstein, the Frankfurt School, and Ricoeur. In the third, central clinical concepts, such as transference, symbolism, wish-fulfilment, making the unconscious conscious, and therapeutic action are presented and interrogated. The fourth discusses the scientific credentials of psychoanalysis, and whether it is better understood as a form of phenomenology. The final four sections turn to the contribution and significance of a psychoanalytic perspective for different aspects of human self-understanding. In that on aesthetics, philosophical theories of art, literature and film are illuminated. In the section on religion, Freud’s challenge to theism, philosophical and psychoanalytic responses to that, and Lacan’s reinterpretation of religion take centre-stage. Next, questions of love, mental health and evolutionary neuroscience are discussed in relation to ethics. The final section examines the radical challenge of psychoanalysis to political and social institutions, including issues of education, gender and war.

The 6th Criminal Law Reform Act of 1998 increased the sentences for carrying ‘dangerous implements’ in the German Criminal Code, but attempts to give a sufficiently precise definition of the concept of a ‘dangerous implement’ have failed. However, there are hardly any considerations on how to draft an ‘appropriate new version of the law’, as suggested by the Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof). This anthology documents a research project that compares the regulatory models of nine countries and aims to amend the law appropriately. A legal and historical representation of theft using weapons supplements the reports on each country. The comparative cross section summarises and evaluates the distinct models, and considerations for reform complete the anthology. Its publisher holds the Chair of Criminal Law, in particular European Criminal Law and International Criminal Law, at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), and focuses on comparative criminal law in her research. AbstractThis chapter will focus on the two decades after 1945, the period of the “post-war society” (1945–1967), which in the historical sciences is also characterized as a period of boom (keywords: “Wirtschaftswunder” (“economic miracle”), expansion of the welfare state, expansion of the educational sector, certainty about the future) and which comes to an end in the 1970s. Germany was undergoing a profound process of change: socio-structural changes in an advanced industrial society, structural changes in the family and a retreat into the private sphere, new opportunities in the areas of consumption and leisure due to the “Wirtschaftswunder,” urbanization and changes in communities, “Western Integration” (“Westbindung”), the ban on the KPD (Communist Party of Germany) in 1956, remilitarization, the development of the mass media and mass motorization, and the repression of the Nazi past were central social and sociological issues. At the same time, fascist tendencies were still virulent during the 1950s and 1960s. After 1945, sociology had to be rebuilt. Journals were refounded or newly founded, the German Sociological Association was restored and sociology was re-established as a teaching subject. Different “schools” and regional centers of sociology emerged. The so-called Cologne School centered around René König, the Frankfurt School around Adorno and Horkheimer, and the circle around Helmut Schelsky should be mentioned in particular; but also, Wolfgang Abendroth, Werner Hofmann, and Heinz Maus (Marburg School), Otto Stammer (Berlin), Arnold Bergstraesser (Freiburg i.Br.), and Helmuth Plessner (Göttingen). Despite their theoretical and political differences, up until the 1950s, they all had in common the decisive will for political and social enlightenment regarding the post-war situation. Furthermore, the particular importance that empirical social research and non-university research institutions had for the further development of sociology after 1945 is worth mentioning. At the end of the 1950s, field-specific dynamics gained momentum. The different “schools” and groups tried to secure and expand their position in the sociological field and their divergent research profiles became increasingly visible. The so-called civil war in sociology drove the actors further apart. Additionally, disciplinary struggles and camp-building processes during the first 20 years of West German sociology revolved around the debate on role theory and the dispute over positivism. By the end of the 1950s, an institutional and generational change can be observed. The so-called post-war generation, which included Ralf Dahrendorf, Jürgen Habermas, Niklas Luhmann, Erwin K. Scheuch, Heinrich Popitz, Hans Paul Bahrdt, M. Rainer Lepsius, and Renate Mayntz, assumed central positions in organizations, editorial boards of journals, and universities. While the early “schools” and circles (König, Schelsky, Adorno, and Horkheimer) initially focused on the sociology of the family and empirical research, the following generation concentrated foremost on industrial sociology, but also on topics of social structure and social stratification as well as on social mobility.

This introduction discusses the Frankfurt School's contribution to the United States' World War II effort. In particular, it examines the role played by three German scholars and prominent members of the Frankfurt School: Franz Neumann, Herbert Marcuse, and Otto Kirchheimer. As political analysts at the Research and Analysis Branch of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the first American intelligence agency, Neumann, Marcuse, and Kirchheimer prepared intelligence reports on Nazi Germany. The chapter considers how, by adapting Critical Theory to the American cultural and bureaucratic machine, the Frankfurt group was rapidly able to impose their own “intellectual guidance” on the Central European Section, a Research and Analysis Branch subdivision charged with analyzing and studying Nazi Germany (as well as Austria and the other Central European countries).

This part looks at how the author joined Frankfurter Allgemeine in 1973. Some fifteen years after his return to Germany, the author at last had a post in his literary life. The literary section of the paper, he hoped, would develop into a forum and an instrument of the highest quality; a particular concern of his was the reviewing of poetry. He then conceived the idea of extending the existing poetry reviews by introducing a regular weekly column. This would not present volumes of poetry, however, but individual poems from all periods of German poetry. Thus the Frankfurt Anthology was born. The fact that literature was being so widely promoted on the pages of Frankfurter Allgemeine did not, by any means, meet with approval only among the literary public — many of the author's colleagues on the paper applauded it too.

Abstract In mid-February 1945, Austin’s section moved from Versailles to Reims, where the German surrender was signed on 7 May. Austin was present, and involved in the celebrations which followed. A few days later, he was sent to Flensburg where a provisional German government had been set up. He was concerned with collecting German documents, interrogating German officers, demobilizing their army, worrying about post-war German resistance, trying to discover details about the Russian Army, and, eventually, winding up the provisional government itself. The remainder of the chapter examines the murder of his colleague, Martin Watkin; the section’s move to Frankfurt; and Austin’s role in ensuring British interests were looked after, as German wartime documents were collected and classified. His war service ends with the award of three medals and his return to civilian life in England.

But from 1582 onward, after the arrival in Leiden of the great humanist scholar, Justus Lipsius, modern textbooks were swept aside in favour of unmediated study of classical authors (section 2.ii). The extermination of Leiden’s Ramist tradition is personified in the figure of Rudolph Snellius. In Marburg before 1575, his teaching aroused such enthusiasm that his former students and colleagues spent years assembling his draft material into a nine-volume, 3,000-page encyclopaedia published in Frankfurt in 1596. In Leiden after 1582, however, his preferred teaching methods were proscribed and he languished for twenty years as an extraordinary professor of mathematics, belittled by his humanist colleagues, and publishing nothing under his own name (section 2.iv). As a consequence, Leiden and the other Dutch universities became net importers of philosophy textbooks for five decades, producing very few of their own and relying instead on the key figure of the central European post-Ramist tradition: Bartholomaeus Keckermann (section 2.ii). Throughout this entire period, Leiden—contrary to widely accepted myth—grew slowly, remained relatively small, and was marginal to international Reformed student travel, until the Twelve Years Truce in 1609 began a growth spurt accelerated by the Thirty Years War after 1618 (section 2.i).

Critical theory is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary framework for analyzing social, cultural, and political phenomena. It originated in the Frankfurt School in the 1930s by Max Horkheimer, and its leading proponents include Herbert Marcuse, Theodor Adorno, and Jürgen Habermas. Measuring the reflection of critical theory on tourism can be a complex task due to the interdisciplinary and multifaceted nature of critical theory and the tourism industry. This chapter will cover three critical topics. Firstly, the author will explore bibliometrics as a research tool for measuring scientific productivity in tourism journals through publications and citations. Secondly, he will delve into network analysis, which provides visualization of the relationships between nodes and components that shape the social structure of the tourism industry, including power dynamics. Lastly, the author will discuss using scientific methods to gain insight into the critical paradigm as a framework for understanding the tourism perspective. In the conclusion section, they will summarize and expand upon these findings.

Abstract This chapter discusses the virtue of integrity as central to a worthwhile life. It is argued that a fragmented or compartmentalized life is always subject to instability, in so far as unresolved psychological tensions may threaten to derail our ethical projects. Achieving an integrated life requires self-awareness; and (drawing on insights from the psychoanalytic tradition) it is suggested that this is not a simple matter but requires a complex process of self-discovery. The chapter’s final section argues that, although necessary for the good life, integrity cannot be sufficient. Against the influential views of Bernard Williams and Harry Frankfurt, it is maintained that our commitment to our chosen projects, however authentic, is not enough to give our lives meaning and value. A good and meaningful life cannot depend on authenticity alone, but requires us to bring our projects into line with objective values that we did not create and cannot alter.

Abstract Ethel Harlan, especially, was always to prefer the Weston, Connecticut, countryside to Washington, D.C., and the frustrations of the Senate confirmation process had obviously done nothing to enhance the city’s appeal. But the spacious and comfortable house at 1677 31st Street which her husband purchased in the fashionable Georgetown section did much to ease his wife’s adjustment to Washington life. “Georgetown and our own house,” she wrote Marion Frankfurter, wife of Justice Frankfurter, in late April following Justice Harlan’s confirmation, “have done a lot to make me feel better. We have had so many small amusements along our street and pleasant experiences getting settled that the first rather alarming impact of Washington has worn off. People have, as you said, been kind and cordial, and I am feeling much gayer.”1 The official atmosphere into which Justice Harlan had now been thrust was not so benign, however. The elevation of Harlan Fiske Stone-a fine jurist but poor chief-to the Supreme Court’s center seat in 1941 had created a leadership vacuum on the Court, with Stone unable or unwilling to maintain the social harmony and decisional pace necessary for the court’s effective functioning, and justices Frankfurter and Black vying for their brethren’s jurisprudential souls.

Abstract In this chapter I continue to illustrate the way that recent discussions of the free will problem depend on disagreements over metaphilosophy and intermediate-level philosophical principles. In section 1, I display an analogy between normative ethics and metaethics on the one side and lower-level free will theorizing and the metaphysics of free will on the other. Metaphilosophical moves available to the normative theorist who lacks a meta-ethical solution are mirrored by those available to free will theorists who lack a solution to the problem of the metaphysics of free will. In section 2, I argue that the importance of Peter van Inwagen’s celebrated consequence argument depends squarely on metaphilosophical premises. In section 3, I make the same case in a different way regarding Harry Frankfurt’s equally famous principle of alternative possibilities. In section 4, I examine the question of whether philosophers should endorse a sliding scale of demands for various philosophical subject matters or whether they should demand equal proof for all philosophical claims. In that section I consider some arguments from Thomas Nagel and J. R. Lucas. In section S, I argue that Peter French’s non-standard view of the relation between moral responsibility and ascriptions of moral responsibility is plausible just in case we adopt a non-standard metaphilosophy.
