EN This paper explores the strategies chosen by Australian learners of Italian when performing emailed apologies in Italian. Through a modified discourse completion task, 42 participants produced a total of 317 emails. This paper presents an adapted typology of these emailed apologies in Italian which, while drawing on previous literature, has been tailored to be more specific to and therefore more effective in the analysis of the data collected in this project. It was found that the apology act as performed by Australian learners of Italian consists of two principal components, the apology and the repair, the latter of which is optional but is usually included. In addition, supportive strategies can be included prior to or following either of these components to strengthen the illocutionary force of the apology act. The analysis also evidenced that while a broad speech act structure can be identified, the apology act is a complex phenomenon which can be performed with great variation. A través de un Discourse Completion Task modificado (actividad de finalización del discurso), 42 participantes produjeron un total de 317 e-mails. Este artículo presenta una tipología adaptada de disculpas en italiano enviadas por e-mail que, aunque tomada de la literatura precedente, se ha adecuado para que fuera más pertinente al proyecto. Se observa que el acto de disculpa del alumnado australiano de italiano se constituye de dos elementos principales: la disculpa y la reparación; este último es facultativo, pero se suele incluir. Además, se pueden utilizar estrategias de soporte antes o después de uno de los dos componentes para consolidar la fuerza ilocutiva del acto de disculpa. El análisis también ha demostrado que, por un lado, es posible identificar una estructura amplia del acto lingüístico, y por otro, el acto de disculpa es un fenómeno complejo cuya realización es altamente variable. Questo articolo presenta una tipologia adattata di scuse in italiano inviate via e-mail che, pur attingendo dalla letteratura precedente, è stata adeguata per essere più attinente al presente progetto. Emerge che l’atto di scusarsi prodotto dagli studenti australiani di italiano è costituito da due elementi principali: la scusa e la riparazione; nonostante quest’ultimo sia facoltativo, viene di solito incluso. Inoltre, strategie di supporto possono essere impiegate prima o dopo una delle due componenti per consolidare la forza illocutoria dell’atto di scuse. L’analisi ha anche dimostrato che, se da un lato, è possibile identificare un’ampia struttura dell’atto linguistico, dall’altro, l’atto di scusarsi è un fenomeno complesso la cui realizzazione è altamente variabile. Statistical process control is a method used for controlling processes in which causes of variations and correction actions can be observed. Control chart is one of the powerful tools of statistical process control that are used to control nonconforming products. Previous literature suggests that fuzzy charts are more sensitive than conventional control charts, and hence, they provide better quality and conformance of products. Nevertheless, some of the data used are more suitable to be presented in interval type-2 fuzzy numbers compared to type-1 fuzzy numbers as interval type-2 fuzzy numbers have more ability to capture uncertain and vague information. In this paper, we develop an interval type-2 fuzzy standardized cumulative sum (IT2F-SCUSUM) control chart and apply it to data of fertilizer production. This new approach combines the advantages of interval type-2 fuzzy numbers and standardized sample means which can control the variability. Twenty samples with a sample size of six were examined for testing the conformance. The proposed IT2F-SCUSUM control chart unveils that 15 samples are “out of control.” The results are also compared to the conventional CUSUM chart and type-1 fuzzy CUSUM chart. The conventional chart shows that 13 samples are “out of control.” In contrast, the type-1 fuzzy CUSUM chart shows that the process is “out of control” for 14 samples. In the analysis of average run length, the proposed IT2F-SCUSUM chart outperforms the other two CUSUM charts. Thus, we can conclude that the IT2F-SCUSUM chart is more sensitive and takes lesser number of observations to identify the shift in the process. The analyses suggest that the IT2F-SCUSUM chart is a promising tool in examining conformance of the quality of the fertilizer production.

AbstractBased on the South Galactic Cap U-band Sky Survey (SCUSS) and SDSS observations, we adopted the star-count method to analyze the stellar distribution in different directions of the Galaxy. We find that the scale height of the disk may be variable with the observed direction, which cannot simply be attributed to statistical errors. The main reason can be possibly attributed to the disk (mainly the thick disk) being flared, with a scale height increasing with radius. The axis ratio of the Galactic halo is in the range 0.4-0.6. This finding supports Galactic models with a flattened inner halo, partly formed through a merger early in the Galaxy's history.

ABSTRACTBackground:Unlike other countries, no data about residents and care features in Special Care Units (SCUs) in Spanish nursing homes have been reported to date. The present paper is the first to analyze the characteristics of residents with dementia and the features of provided care in SCUs in comparison to residents with dementia in standard beds, thus not receiving specialized care in nursing homes in Spain.Methods:Data on residents with dementia were collected in 11 nursing homes. Residents with diagnosis of dementia and Mini-Mental State Examination scores of less than 27 were randomly selected in each center. Altogether 197 residents were assessed: 102 (52%) placed in SCUs, and 95 (48%) in standard beds. Analyses of the characteristics of residents in SCUs versus standard beds regarding socio-demographic and clinical variables, features of the care provided, and residents’ quality of life (QoL) were performed using univariate and multivariate tests (binary logistic regression analysis).Results:Residents in SCUs did not differ from those in standard beds in socio-demographic variables. Placement of residents in SCUs seemed to be related with the presence of severe cognitive and functional impairment and aggressive behaviors. Being in an SCU conveyed a higher probability of having individual bedroom and bathroom; nevertheless, there were no differences in the care provided in SCUs, considering use of nappies, and feeding and restraint systems. Patients in SCUs showed lower QoL reported by the staff.Conclusions:Although residents in SCUs present higher levels of impairment, there are no real differences in the care provided besides a higher probability of having individual rooms. Regulations on required features for SCUs in Spain are necessary to guarantee that care provided to residents is truly special.

The positive impact of stroke care units (SCUs) on patient outcome has been previously reported. In this study, long-term stroke patients that are formally admitted to teaching-hospitals are compared with and without SCUs. The authors focus on the patients’ experience with ongoing care or formal transfers following current care as this cohort is often high users of the system with associated high costs. Bayesian Networks were employed to analyze routinely collected public-hospital administrative data. The results illustrate that the teaching-hospitals with SCUs, while achieving shorter length of stay, in fact deal with younger patients with lower overall patient complexity than non-SCU teaching-hospitals. Other differences include SCUs predominantly treating subarachnoid hemorrhages whereas the non-SCUs treat more cerebral infarctions. This study illustrates the power of Bayesian Networks to expose the nature of caseload and outcomes recorded in hospital-administrative data as a means to gain insight on current practice and create opportunities for benchmarking and improving care.

Accumulation of phytochemicals in vegetative tissue under nitrogen (N) stress as an adaptive strategy has been investigated in various crops, but the effect of applied N on grain phytochemicals is poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of applied N on the biosynthesis and accumulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grain anthocyanin and γ-oryzanol under different ultraviolet-B (UV-B) conditions in a controlled pot trial using two distinct black rice genotypes. The response of grain anthocyanin and γ-oryzanol content to applied N was genotype-dependent but was not altered by UV-B conditions. Applied N increased grain anthocyanin and decreased γ-oryzanol content in genotype SCU212 but had no significant effect in genotype SCU254. The expression of the OsKala3 regulatory gene was significantly upregulated in response to applied N in SCU212, while the expressions of OsKala4 and OsTTG1 were unchanged. The expression of all three regulatory genes was not significantly affected in SCU254 with applied N. Key anthocyanin biosynthesis genes were upregulated in grain by N application, which indicates that the common increase in anthocyanin in vegetative tissues under N deprivation does not hold true for reproductive tissues. Hence, any future approach to target higher content of these key phytochemicals in grains should be genotype-focused.

Shoots and foliage on branches of old Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. menziesii (coastal Douglas-fir) trees are constantly renewed by epicormic shoot production. Epicormic shoots are produced in all parts of the crown, and epicormic buds remain dormant for 5 or 6 years on average. Epicormic shoot production results in reiteration of shoot cluster units (SCUs), an architectural unit of shoot organization within branches. Five phases of SCU development were identified based on relative age structures of regular and epicormic shoots. SCUs produce epicormic branchlets as early as 3 or 4 years of age, and peak production occurred around 6-13 years. Epicormic branchlets occur toward the proximal end of main axes of SCUs, where regular lateral branchlets are no longer producing new shoots. In some lower-crown branches, nearly 50% of shoots and foliage are epicormic shoots. Demographic analysis of SCUs showed that upper-crown branches are still growing in size, while mid- and lower-crown branches have reached maximum size, and are being maintained by reiteration of SCUs. Epicormic shoot production maintains shoots and foliage of old P. menziesii trees after height growth and crown expansion have stopped and may contribute to prolonging tree longevity.Key words: aging, branch growth, epicormic shoots, longevity, Pseudotsuga menziesii, reiteration.

Background: In special care units (SCUs) for residents with advanced dementia, both personnel and organizations are adapted to the needs of residents. However, whether these adaptations have a preventive effect on elder abuse has not yet been explored. Objective: To describe the prevalence of observed emotional abuse, neglect, and physical abuse in Swiss nursing homes, to compare SCUs with non-SCUs concerning the frequency of observed emotional abuse, neglect, and physical abuse, and to explore how resident-related characteristics, staff outcomes/characteristics, and organizational/environmental factors relate to observed elder abuse. Methods: This is a secondary data analysis of the Swiss Nursing Homes Human Resources Project (SHURP), a cross-sectional multicenter study. Data were collected from 2012 to 2013 and are based on observed rather than perpetrated elder abuse. We performed multilevel mixed-effects logistic regressions taking into account the hierarchical structure of the data with personnel nested within units and facilities. Results: Of 4,599 care workers in 400 units and 156 facilities, 50.8% observed emotional abuse, 23.7% neglect, and 1.4% physical abuse. There was no significant difference between SCUs and non-SCUs regarding observed emotional abuse and neglect. Higher scores for ‘workload' and sexual aggression towards care workers were associated with higher rates of emotional abuse and neglect. Verbal and physical resident aggression, however, were only associated with higher rates of emotional abuse. Negative associations were found between ‘teamwork and resident safety climate' and both forms of abuse. Conclusion: Improving teamwork and the safety climate and reducing work stressors might be promising points of intervention to reduce elder abuse. More specific research about elder abuse in SCUs and the interaction between work climate and elder abuse is required.

The effects of four grades of sulfurcoated urea (SCU1, 35.1% nitrogen (N) and dissolution rate in water at 38�C of 10.5%; SCU2, 36.3%N and 25.9% dissolution rate; SCU3, 36.2%N and 1 1.2% dissolution rate; SCU4, 36.8%N and 15.4% dissolution rate) were compared with those of uncoated urea as sources of nitrogen for cereals in nine field experiments in two years. In five experiments at five sites in 1978, and in two experiments at two sites in 1979, comparisons were made between fertilizers topdressed either after sowing (1978) or before sowing (1979). In two further experiments in 1979, comparisons were made between fertilizers banded with the seed or topdressed immediately before or after sowing. Supplementary data on the effect of banding were obtained from a glasshouse experiment. There were no differences between sources in three of the five 1978 experiments. At the other two sites urea was superior to SCU when 50 kg N/ha was applied 2 weeks after sowing. Applications of urea 4 or 6 weeks after sowing gave grain yields, at these sites, up to 69 and 57% higher, respectively, than earlier applications. Apparent recovery of fertilizer nitrogen in one experiment in which it was measured was greater for two SCUs (13.1 and 2l.6%, respectively) than for urea (6+9%), but this was true only for applications at sowing. Urea applied 4 and 6 weeks after sowing resulted in much higher recoveries of fertilizer nitrogen (33.9 and 49.3%, respectively) and was more effective in overcoming leaching losses than was the slow-release SCU. There were no effects of time of application before sowing in the two 1979 experiments, indicating little or no loss of ammonia through volatilization, which precluded a comparison of the effects of the three nitrogen sources used. However, uncoated urea outyielded two SCUs in these experiments, by 7.5 and 6.5% in the first experiment and 5 and 2% in the second, respectively. When uncoated urea was banded with the seed at the equivalent of 70 or 140 kg N/ha all plants in the glasshouse experiment died. SCU at the lower nitrogen rate did not affect wheat emergence or survival but a 30% reduction in plant numbers resulted at the higher rate of SCU2. In one field experiment, uncoated urea reduced plant numbers by 96% compared with 20 and 13% for SCU3 and SCU4, respectively, when applied at 75 kg N/ha. Overall, this study showed no reason to use these grades of SCU in preference to uncoated urea, except where there is a need to band urea-containing fertilizer with the seed.

Slow-release fertilizer is an environmentally friendly fertilizer that is widely used in crop cultivation instead of traditional nitrogen fertilizer. However, the optimal application time of slow-release fertilizer and its effect on starch accumulation and rhizome quality of lotus remains unclear. In this study, two slow-release fertilizer applications (sulfur-coated compound fertilizer, SCU, and resin-coated urea, RCU) were fertilized under three fertilization periods (the erect leaf stage, SCU1 and RCU1; the erect leaf completely covering the water stage, SCU2 and RCU2; and the swelling stage of lotus rhizomes, SCU3 and RCU3) to study the effects of different application periods. Compared with CK (0 kg∙ha−1 nitrogen fertilizer), leaf relative chlorophyll content (SPAD) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) remained at higher levels under SCU1 and RCU1. Further studies showed that SCU1 and RCU1 increased yield, amylose content, amylopectin and total starch, and the number of starch particles in lotus, and also significantly reduced peak viscosity, final viscosity and setback viscosity of lotus rhizome starch. To account for these changes, we measured the activity of key enzymes in starch synthesis and the relative expression levels of related genes. Through analysis, we found that these parameters increased significantly under SCU and RCU treatment, especially under SCU1 and RCU1 treatment. The results of this study showed that the one-time application at the erect leaf stage (SCU1 and RCU1) could improve the physicochemical properties of starch by regulating the key enzymes and related genes of starch synthesis, thus improving the nutritional quality of lotus rhizome. These results provide a technical choice for the one-time application of slow-release fertilizer in lotus rhizome production and cultivation.

Abstract European XFEL is investing in the development of superconducting undulators (SCUs) for future upgrade of its beamlines. SCUs made of NbTi, working at 2 K, with a period length of 15 mm and a vacuum gap of 5 mm allow covering a range between 54 keV and 100 keV. The effect of mechanical errors in the distribution of the undulator parameter K along the undulators is more relevant for working points at lower photon energy, which are obtained using a higher magnetic field in the undulator. In this article we investigate the effect of error distribution in the K-parameter for a working point at 50 keV photon energy obtained injecting an electron beam with 16.5 GeV energy from the XFEL linear accelerator in a undulator line composed by SCUs with 1.6 T peak magnetic field.

Here we just considered three components: double exponential thin disk and thick disk and a de Vaucouleurs halo. And these parameters were obtained by minimising χ2.

Prima vengono di-scussi gli ostacoli incontrati dal progetto di ricerca sulle apocalissi culturali e i deliri di fine del mondo, e successivamente viene descritto il nuovo clima culturale che si sviluppò negli anni 1980, con l'emergere di nuovi paradigmi di pensiero favorevoli a un ripensamento del rapporto tra individuo e cultura. In questa prospettiva, il pensiero pionieristico di de Martino nell'intendere la presenza umana come intrinsecamente legata alle istituzioni culturali si prestò molto bene ad aprire una strada verso lo sviluppo di una psicologia complessa.

The characterization of scully, an essential gene of Drosophila with phenocritical phases at embryonic and pupal stages, shows its extensive homology with vertebrate type II l-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase/ERAB. Genomic rescue demonstrates that four different lethal mutations are scu alleles, the molecular nature of which has been established. One of them, scu3127, generates a nonfunctional truncated product. scu4058 also produces a truncated protein, but it contains most of the known functional domains of the enzyme. The other two mutations, scu174 and scuS152, correspond to single amino acid changes. The expression of scully mRNA is general to many tissues including the CNS; however, it is highest in both embryonic gonadal primordia and mature ovaries and testes. Consistent with this pattern, the phenotypic analysis suggests a role for scully in germ line formation: mutant testis are reduced in size and devoid of maturing sperm, and mutant ovarioles are not able to produce viable eggs. Ultrastructural analysis of mutant spermatocytes reveals the presence of cytoplasmic lipid inclusions and scarce mitochondria. In addition, mutant photoreceptors contain morphologically aberrant mitochondria and large multilayered accumulations of membranous material. Some of these phenotypes are very similar to those present in human pathologies caused by β-oxidation disorders.
