Повний текст джерелаStarting from the introduction of the quantities which define the wind and its typical turbulent character, the generalization of some theories and analytical models concerning the analysis of long-span bridges, both suspended and cable-stayed ones, are presented. They regard: determination of steady and non-steady wind actions on long-span bridges; the response and the statical and dynamic stability critical conditions of these structures under wind action. In detail, the classical quasi-steady linear theory, adopted to describe the aeroelastic and aerodynamic forces on bluff bodies, is generalized both for the indicial approach and for the frequential one by second order approximations with respect to the structural displacement components and turbulent flow velocity. Moreover, the response models and statical (divergence) and dynamic (flutter) stability critical conditions, based on modal approach and on integro-differential continuous models, are generalized when the flutter derivatives vary along the girder axis and when the Scanlan-type-derivatives H*4 and A*4 can not disregarded. Furthermore, under the simplified assumption of a streamlined bridge cross-section, a sensitive analysis of the critical wind conditions with respect to the inertial bridge parameters is presented. Finally, a numerical model based on a finite volume formulation of the flow problem around the girder cross-section of a long-span bridges is developed. The model is able to simulate steady and non-steady wind loading conditions on the structure under the approximated assumption, due to the consideration of large span lengths, of a two-dimensional-like approaching flow. Moreover, the proposed model, by using an A.L.E. approach, allows the numerical extraction of flutter derivatives for an assigned bridge deck cross-section, in order to characterize in an analytical way the overall bridge stability conditions to the wind actions. A two-equations k-ε RNG turbulence model and special boundary conditions are employed in order to perform satisfactory accuracy and stability of the numerical solution. Model implementation and data extraction procedure are successfully validated on simple cross-section shapes and numerical results are also obtained for typical long-span bridge cross sections. Good agreement with other numerical solutions and experimental wind tunnel tests results is demonstrated.

Повний текст джерелаIn the last decades, an increasing number of deep excavations, generally supported by diaphragm walls with one or more levels of support, are constructed in urban areas to meet the demands of transport and use of underground space. Monitoring of existing structures and experimental observations on small scale models have shown that retaining structures experience serious damage when exposed to moderate to strong earthquakes, during which both failure of structural elements and large permanent displacements of the walls occur. An understanding of the dynamic behaviour of retaining structures and adequate design procedures are vital for the control of seismic induced displacements and hence the limitation of damages to the surrounding buildings. At present no analytical methods for the prediction of permanent displacements of flexible retaining walls under dynamic conditions are available. Therefore, numerical modelling is the only reliable tool to describe the stress-strain behaviour of such structures. Nevertheless, many uncertainties exist in the numerical analyses of dynamic soil-structure interaction, among which a major role is played by the constitutive model adopted for the soil, which should be able to reproduce the main features of its mechanical behaviour under cyclic loading. Accordingly, it is necessary to have experimental data both to calibrate constitutive models and to verify numerical predictions. Since few experimental data are available from the observation of real structures under earthquakes, the study of the seismic behaviour of flexible retaining walls relies mainly on data obtained from centrifuge or shaking table tests on reduced scaled models. This thesis presents the results of a series of dynamic centrifuge tests on reduced scale models of flexible retaining walls, both cantilevered and with one level of support, conducted on the Turner beam centrifuge at the Schofield Centre of the University of Cambridge. The experimental programme included a total of nine model tests in an ideal layer of dry sand, reconstituted at different values of relative density, in order to identify the main physical factors affecting the behaviour of such structures under seismic actions. Six tests were carried out on pairs of cantilevered retaining walls at an acceleration of 80 g and three on pairs of propped retaining walls at 40 g. Plain strain numerical simulations of centrifuge model tests were also carried out with a finite difference code. In the FD analyses, the mechanical behaviour of the soil was modelled using an advanced constitutive model, developed by Andrianopoulos et al. (2010) within the framework of bounding surface plasticity. This model is able to reproduce the cyclic behaviour of granular soils under small to large shear strains with a single set of model parameters for any initial relative density and confining pressure. The main objective of the numerical simulations was to verify the reliability of both constitutive assumptions for the soil and numerical procedures adopted to model dynamic phenomena. Besides, the possibility to observe the evolution of the stress state in the soil during dynamic transients permitted to interpret the physical phenomena observed during centrifuge model tests on the basis of the stress-strain behaviour of the soil close to the excavation. The experimental work permitted to identify clearly important phenomena, such as the progressive development of permanent displacements during shaking and the existence of significant residual loads in the structural members after shaking. Numerical analyses showed a good agreement with the experimental results, both in terms of accelerations into the soil and displacements and loads in the structural members. Moreover, the observation of stress redistribution around the excavation showed that permanent displacements and residual bending moments in the walls are mainly due to a progressive mobilization of the passive resistance in the soil during dynamic transients.

Повний текст джерелаIn modern and contemporary research focused on the manufacture of smaller, faster, efficient and selective products, the production of materials with a well-defined microscopic spatial arrangements, it is of vital importance for the creation of new electronic, optical or magnetic devices. A potentially attractive way of assembly and maintain such microscopically controlled structures, is the use of molecular based materials. The research on the field of molecular magnetism, is mainly focused on molecular systems containing a finite number of coupled magnetic ions. This type of magnetic nano-molecules, generally called single magnetic molecules – SMMs, are objects placed in between of the classical and quantum physics. In fact, from a classical point of view, these structure shows phenomena such as: the slow relaxation of the magnetization and a widespread magnetic hysteresis. On te contrary, due to their dimensions, such structure can also shows quantum phenomena. The molecular magnets, indeed, are characterized by phenomena like the magnetic bistability e the most important feature of the magnetic quantum tunnelling, which is a purely quantum phenomena. These are some physical characteristics of SMMs that allow a wide range of applications of which we found their use as tools for data storage and nan-scale qbits used for the realization of quantum computer. Depending on the required applications, it is possible, today, synthetize an ad hoc molecular structure able to meet all the functional requirements. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to know and fully understand the behaviour of these molecules and therefore, are needed detailed information from the experimental methods, as well as, information obtained by theoretical models. The main topics of research: implementation of a simply simulation tool – PRAXIS - that permit the understanding of the magnetic properties of the SMMs, to verify the experimental data or to be used as experimental data predictor in order to synthetize ad hoc magnetic molecular clusters with improved properties for Nano-technological applications. Following an accurate scheme based on software engineering protocol, PRAXIS has been created with to particular aims: to verify the experimental data obtained measuring the physical properties of the SMMs, and to predict them in different situations. As last feature od PRAXIS, there is the possibility of theoretical auto-assembling of a large number of magnetic molecules, modelling them in a wide range of situations.
