The success of Indian entrepreneurs, scientist, academics, media personalities, filmmakers, IT professionals, CEOs in the US has created trust in India’s intellectual abilities abroad. It has been a major source in branding India as a source of well-educated and hard working professionals. Ethnic Indians particularly in New Diaspora countries have become known for their economic, professional academic, scientific and artistic successes and general peaceful integration. The government of India has taken many initiatives for their betterment and organize various programmes for being the India Diaspora close to their host country and also to resolve the issues and challenges faced by the government from the Indian Diaspora.

The current study analyses how CEO’s attributes could influence innovation. It is drawn on all listed firms on the SBF120 1 index between 2001 and 2013. Proxies for innovation effort are the ratio of R&D spending and the number of researchers/scientists per R&D team. First, we find that the CEO’s education background could influence innovation effort. Specifically, when CEOs have a science or an engineering degree, unlike business and management educated CEOs, they are more inclined to increase R&D spending. These effects are pronounced in innovative firms operating in sectors where innovation is not the heart core of their businesses. Also, we show that CEOs’ profile influence firms’ innovation investment only in non-technological industries. In high technological firms, attributes’ differences between CEOs are very small which may be due to high competition between firms listed on the SBF120 index. Finally, our results on the influence of gender diversity on boardrooms in Tech firms are consistent with the risk-avoidance hypothesis according to which women are risk averse agents.

This proceeding includes original and peer-reviewed research papers from the 2nd International Symposium on Communication Engineering & Computer Science (CECS 2022), which was held on December 10-11, 2022 in Wuhan, China. The conference is an international symposium for the presentation of technological advances and research results in the fields of communication engineering, computer science and related topics. The conference will bring together leading researchers, engineers and scientists in the domain of interest from around the world. We warmly welcome prospected authors submit there new research papers to this 2nd CECS, and share the valuable experiences with the scientist and scholars around the world. CECS 2022 received 146 manuscripts. By submitting a paper to CECS 2022, the authors agreed to the review process and understood that papers undergo a peer-review process. Manuscripts were reviewed by appropriately qualified experts in the field selected by the Conference Committee, who gave detailed comments and-if the submission was accepted the authors would submit a revised version that considered this feedback. All papers were reviewed using a double-blind review process: authors declared their names and affiliations in the manuscript for the reviewers to see, but reviewers did not know each other’s identities, nor did the authors receive information about who had reviewed their manuscript. The Committees of CECS 2022 invested great efforts in reviewing the papers submitted to the conference and organizing the sessions to enable the participants to gain maximum benefit. Purpose Research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting highlights an increasing lack of transparency in the information reported along with concerns surrounding overall reporting practices. One area that needs exploration is how chief executive officers (CEOs) convey messages in relation to CSR. This paper aims to investigate the linkage between CEO’s statements (words and images) in relation to CSR and the performativity of such communication. Design/methodology/approach The study analysed CEOs statements from five Malaysian companies contained in 2016, 2017 and 2018 standalone sustainability and annual reports. The texts and visuals are analysed by using discourse analysis. Findings The findings uncover three main discourses (economic, environmental and social) along with other discourses (achievements and recognition and challenges). The texts and images are found to be lacking in clarity and consistency and in many ways leave the stakeholders to make their own conclusions about the reported information. Originality/value The research indicates that while the leaders can be more direct to their stakeholders, however, the opportunity is not always capitalised. Overall, the analysis suggests an increasing scientism in CEOs messaging in relation to CSR as a tool to enhance perceived accountability of the business. The study also suggests avenues for improvement. This paper contributes to the emergence of different types of discourses that are being upheld by CEOs in their statements on CSR in Malaysian context. The discourses identified provide interesting insights into how CSR is perceived by the leaders.

The unique antioxidant and radioprotective properties of cerium oxide nanocrystals (СеО2–х) in the biological environment has led to considerable attention to these nanocrystals of scientists from various fields. The influence of the defect structure on the mechanisms of antioxidant activity of nanocrystals is revealed, and possible ways to control both the defect structure and antioxidant properties of nanoparticles are shown. The luminescence properties and antioxidant activity of nanoceria and ceria-based mixed (CeO2—Re2O3 (Re = Y, Eu, Tb), CeO2—ZrO2) colloidal nanoparticles depends strongly on the type and concentration of doped ions and laser irradiation. The continuous UV irradiation with specific wavelengths leads to formation of additional Ce3+—Vo—Ce3+ complexes providing better antioxidant activity of pre-irradiated ceria nanoparticles.

This thesis examines the impact of personal managerial characteristics on the decision making of chief executives (CEOs) at a corporate level. The research suggests executives’ personal philanthropy and educational backgrounds have a potent effect on corporate malfeasance in financial reporting and corporate environmental engagement and performance. My thesis is comprised of two studies. The first study explores the impact of CEO personal altruism on corporate malfeasance in financial reporting. The results show that firms run by CEOs with altruistic preferences, as captured by their stock donations, are less likely to commit financial fraud and exhibit lower levels of real and accrual-based earnings manipulation. These effects are more pronounced for CEOs who do not backdate when making stock donations and who donate stocks outside the tax season. The results are robust to a battery of endogeneity checks, including examining the effect of CEO turnovers, using difference-in-difference models, and applying an instrumental variable approach. Overall, the results suggest that personal altruism of managers has a disciplining effect on corporate malfeasance in financial reporting. Subsequently, the next chapter addresses potential measurement error of personal managerial altruism and extends the research of the effect of CEO altruism on the readability of a firm’s annual financial report. Similar conclusions are obtained when proxying CEO altruism by five alternative measures other than CEO stock donations. Further, the results also show that financial reports are more comprehendible for firms with altruistic CEOs. Building on the theories of familiarity and self-efficacy, the second study investigates the relationship between CEO educational background in science and MBA degrees, and corporate environmental responsibility. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms, this research conducts difference-in-difference analyses utilizing CEO turnovers to highlight the impacts of CEOs backgrounds on corporate environmental ratings and performance. The results show that science-educated CEOs take greater environmental risks rather than refraining from investing in environmental strengths which result in lower overall environmental CSR ratings. Conversely, CEO holdings MBA degrees outperform non-MBA CEOs in overall environmental CSR performance because MBA CEOs are more risk-averse in taking additional environmental risks. The overall findings document that CEO educational background may be a potent predictor of differences in corporate environmental engagement and performance.

Cultural aversion to microbes, healthiness or desire for safe bathing, the applications for water disinfection are varied and the technologies used to achieve this goal are numerous. The authors looked at a simple solution to implement: the use of a reagent called performic acid. Consequently, more than two years of applied research, observations and analyzes were necessary to demonstrate its harmlessness towards the natural environment. The strength of the demonstration lies in the cross-vision of many researchers and scientists from different backgrounds who shared their studies and observations. The strength of this testimony also lies in the diversity of the application cases, including notable and sensitive receiving environments as different as the Seine, the Atlantic Ocean or the Venice lagoon. Through its intentions and results, this work is a step, moving forward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 6 “clean water and sanitation” relying on the lever of SDG 17 “partnerships for the goals”. But these backgrounds also include historians, lawyers, regulatory experts, investment bankers, and a range of other professions. The chapter identifies some of the personal characteristics often shared by entrepreneurs in a way that may help prospective biotech entrepreneurs consider the attractiveness of that career path.

While making objective rankings sounds like an appealing goal, there are at least two reasons why we may not have objectivity: ignorance and manipulation. Persons with less knowledge suffer from illusory superiority due to their cognitive bias, a phenomenon called the Dunning–Kruger effect. Omnipresent in society is not only ignorance but also manipulation. Manipulators have the intention of gaining personal advantage by adopting different tricks, and the chapter summarizes these tricks. Then the importance and the difficulties of measuring society are discussed. According to Campbell’s law, use of quantitative indicators will distort and corrupt the social processes they are intended to monitor. “Rank and yank” refers to an annual performance review process by which a company ranks its employees against one another, and it looks as though CEOs have the difficult problem of avoiding unhealthy dog-eat-dog situations in the workplace. The chapter then discusses how a particular social metric, the credit score, is calculated and how objective the result is. It argues that social scientists and computer scientists should cooperate to generate “ethical algorithms” to avoid social prejudice. Further, it is argued that quantification is an indispensable part of an evaluation process. Metrics are not a silver bullet, because they might be manipulated, but careful measurement is better than purely subjective opinion.

Financing is one of the most critical boundaries for the establishment and growth of a Small and Medium-sized Enterprise: SME (Moore, 1993). This chapter describes traditional and non-traditional financing opportunities for SMEs in Germany by focusing on its applicability. The disclosure of financial business information and giving a say to an equity financier is a difficult topic for owners of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), because these companies are often run as a ‘one-man-show’ (by a single manager) and this person identifies itself with the company. The request for external funds is in that perspective still regarded as a disability of a business to be self-financed. A comparison of the organisational structure of a SME and that of a Large Scale Enterprise (LSE) reveals the structural weaknesses in terms of research and development (R&D) activities. While LSE have an extra department, budget and procedures to develop product and process innovations similarly to a knowledge push, in SMEs, innovations are often originated from customers—similarly to a need pull process (Tidd & Bessant, 2009). Furthermore, CEOs and customer contribute to a great extend to innovations in SMEs (BDI, 2010). The results of an online-based survey presented in the BDI-Mittelstandspanel 2010, show that less than 13% of innovations are originated by external scientists, R&D organisations and consultants. This proofs that external R&D sources (to compensate missing internal resources and structures) are rarely employed; impeding or slowing down the development of innovations.

The title of the chapter is a Greek term that literally translates into “eating oneself” and is representative of a trend of mergers and acquisitions that has subsumed the drug development enterprise over the past three decades and now fundamentally threatens our ability to develop new medicines. We begin with two examples of acquisitions by Eli Lilly & Company. One product resulted from an unexpected discovery by Pfizer scientists of a drug meant to treat angina that had the unexpected but not undesired effect of treating erectile dysfunction. The second acquisition, of New York-based Imclone, was the final step in a high profile controversy that led the jailing of its CEO and the celebrity Martha Stewart for insider trading. Despite these two acquisitions, Eli Lilly largely did not participate in the merger mania of the past few decades and we relate how this most innovative company fell through the rankings to become a middling contender. This waning resulted from the meteoric rise of Pfizer as one of the most aggressive purveyors of pharmaceutical industry consolidation and the unlikely rise of Valeant Pharmaceuticals, a company with a checkered history and ongoing woes.

Human species is currently standing on a junction, where it shall decide how it will further develop new technologies. Within the rapid technological evolution during last hundred years, human was designing technology to support him in many challenges - to lift heavier things, to reach further distances, to heal more people. With introduction of IT technologies, numerous visionary high-tech solutions entered homes. High capacity modern communication technologies allow human not only to share large amount of data, but also not to share any information - people share bytes, but according to social scientists they don't share valuable information as they did in past. While i.e. standard for road vehicle brakes had 8 pages in 1970s, current print has more than 80, but does not contain 10 times more information. Human has silently entered an era, where technology is often created for technology, not for human. In today's daily life, it is much more difficult to find valid and valuable information in data smog. Similar applies to road transportation - a socio-technological system, whose control is widely decentralized. We are searching for solutions to enhance transport safety and to increase infrastructure throughput in new technologies, while we forget that transport is not the source of the problem, but the consequence of human's need to move. Thus, the solution is not on a technological level, but on a system organization level. One of the highly promoted technological solution is autonomous driving. However, if we study the literature we cannot find anything explaining the automation as the only right way and as an achievable solution to road transport problems. No in-depth interdisciplinary study exist about the influence of autonomous road transportation on the society. The numbers showing positive expectations have more economical and marketing background, rather than technological or social. Every new product or prototype is being promoted with standard marketing approach. MIT's social study on management in technological companies points out incompetent decision making on high levels of management primarily due to complexity of modern technological systems, which cannot be understood neither by one CEO, nor by number of narrow oriented specialists. Still, the evolution of autonomous systems in the past decade is at least interesting. We are already attacking physical limits of sensors. New algorithms have to pursue the chase for low energy demands. Yet, the human brain needs just about 25 Watts at full load, while it is able to perform highly complex and accurate probabilistic estimations. When driving a road vehicle, average driver does a mistake emerging into an accident once in ca. 270 000 km. This leads to an average driver's reliability of 99,99996% on a driven distance. According to several accident researches, majority of accidents is caused by minority of drivers. The proposed article is aiming to discuss the achievable safety benefits of autonomous driving in comparison with human driver and with changes on system level, thus pointing out the main pillars of comprehensive autonomous road transport study.
