Schoolchildren’s natural science competence development is inseparable from teachers’ natural science competence, the integral part of which are subject, didactic and managerial abilities. Competence (es) acquisition during the studies at university is not a final process. Competence improvement, enrichment continues during the whole period of active pedagogical work. In the months of January-February 2018, a qualitative, limited amount research was carried out. 60 primary school teachers from more than 25 Lithuanian schools participated in the research. Research data were analysed using a content analysis method. Research results revealed that most primary school teachers value their knowledge in natural science field as sufficient. Teachers accentuate that their competences are proper and emphasize their lifelike and long work experience importance. Part of the teachers accentuate constant natural science education subject knowledge renewal. Only a small part of teachers notice that they lack knowledge in natural science field. Research result analysis showed that most of primary school teachers develop natural science competence independently using various information sources. A big part of teachers develop natural science competence participating in formal specially organised activities. Not a small part of teachers accentuate practical natural science competence development. Research results revealed that most primary school teachers give average evaluation to their competence in teaching natural science (world cognition). Only a small part of teachers attribute a high value to this competence of theirs. Research result analysis showed that primary school teachers teaching students natural sciences (world cognition), encounter various problems. The bigger part of teachers experience problems, related to the teaching process: lack of devices, low students’ teaching motivation, teaching content shortcomings. A big part of teachers teaching natural science subjects (world cognition) experience social – organisational problems: a lack of time, unfavourable conditions, a lack of support. Teacher opinion analysis of what needs to be changed /improved in natural science primary school teacher training/preparation revealed that the biggest part of teachers offer to improve future teachers’ practical abilities/skills. Part of teachers offer to better develop special competences, related to natural science education, to improve material supply of the study process. The analysis of training a future primary school teacher for the formation of environmental culture of primary school children revealed certain drawbacks: in the professional training of students of higher educational establishments, namely to theory and methods of ecological education studying is paid little attention; among the forms of organization of the educational process are dominated traditional ones (lectures and practical classes) of a reproductive nature; the potential of ecology as an integrated science has not been used; the resource of psychological and pedagogical subjects for environmental training of primary school teachers is not fully involved. All this creates a significant gap between the achievements of science and practice of environmental education in the direction of preparing future primary school teachers for the formation of environmental culture of primary school children. The article is devoted to the search for effective pedagogical conditions for training future primary school teachers for the formation of ecological culture of pupils. The literature on this problem is analyzed, which allows us to conclude that the opinions of scientists are marked by a contradiction about what conditions should be created to ensure the greatest efficiency of the educational process. In general, they determine the pedagogical conditions depending on the direction of their research, in particular: environmental training of future teachers; environmental training of future primary school teachers; formation of the teacher's readiness to intensify the educational process in primary school; development of ecological culture (pupils, future teachers); formation of pupils' caring attitude to nature, a sense of responsibility of pupils. We attach the following meaning to the essence of the concept «pedagogical conditions of preparation of the future primary school teacher for formation of ecological culture of pupils»: it is purposeful and objective possibilities of educational process and the factors and circumstances providing the corresponding process in unity of traditional and innovative approaches. The following pedagogical condition is defined: the organization of the educational process by means of interrelation of theoretical and practical training on the basis of introduction of new educational technologies.

At the present stage of the development of Kazakhstani higher education in the context of the transition to the updated content of education, the problem of future primary school teachers’ professional training is relevant. It is not enough to identify the problems in the training of future specialists in the field of primary education in order to list the competencies that a graduate should master. It is reasonable to consider the model of the predicted result as a system of interrelated components. In this regard, this study aims to identify and substantiate the structural components of the professional competence of primary school teachers. The main methods of studying this problem are comparative and model methods, which allow to to take account of various research approaches for understanding the structure of teachers’ professional competence. The results of the study indicate the process of developing analytical, diagnostic, and prognostic professional actions make up the structure of the professional competence of an elementary school teacher, other important characteristics of the teachers’ professional development, such as communicative, are also being successfully improved, which also confirms the integrative basis of the structure of professional competence.

This paper describes a training proposal for future teachers in the design, management, and use of school gardens as an educational resource. During the 2020/2021 academic year, future teachers in the 4th grade of Primary Education (last year of the University Degree) received theoretical-practical classes to develop teaching-learning activities in the area of Sciences that they implemented in a Primary school. This training proposal and the research activities designed and implemented in the school garden by future teachers were analysed using three criteria: curricular contents covered, competency richness and structure and content. From the training programme implemented, we highlight an increase in the motivation of students towards learning to use this resource; because it is learned “in situ” in the school garden, it is possible to carry out outdoor work, sharing natural resources through cooperative work and improving relationships. Regarding the design of activities proposed by the future teachers, there is a predominance of the use of observation and classification processes and a deficit of other scientific competences, which implies the need for greater specific initial training on school gardens.

Introduction. Pedagogical universities are faced with the task of traininga teacher of a new genera-tion, ready for the development of a competent student, his or her talents, individual characteristics, and creative potential, which determines the change in the content of teacher education and its implementation. In particular, the problem of a future teacher’s training who is able to independently choose the content of education, design and integrate educational material, create educational projects, use effective educational technologies, design and manage the educational process is becoming rele-vant. The рurpose is to highlight the problems of a future primary school teacher’s training in accordance with the challenges of our time, in particular, integrated teaching that is based on humane and constructive interaction. The methodsof research – problematic, logical and comparative analysis of scientific and pedagogical litera-ture, scientific works of domestic researchers, comparison and generalization of the methodological foundations of psychological and pedagogical literature. Results. In modern conditions, integrated learning has become important, which corresponds to the individual characteristics of children, the development of their abili-ties and talents, based on an integrated approach. In the history of formation and development of the national education system there is considerable experience in the implementation of integrated education. The essence of the integrated approach is, in particular, to create inte-grated courses – subjects that adapt to the study and integrate knowledge of several sciences or kinds of arts; introduction of thematic days, which unite blocks of knowledge in different subjects, topics around one prob-lem in order to enrich the information and emotional per-ception, thinking, feelings of the student. Originality. The scientific novelty of the research re-sults is that for the first time a comparative analysis of the problems of implementation of integrated learning and the readiness of future primary school teachers for its implementation. Conclusions and specific suggestions of the author. In the present-day challenges, the problem of the readiness of future primary education teachers for integrated learn-ing on the basis of humane and constructive dialogue interaction, who is capable of working on the principles of partnership pedagogy, is becoming relevant. That is why in the process of future primary school teachers training for professional activity, higher education institutions must ensure their ability to: acquire, replenish and expand their knowledge about the peculiarities of pedagogical activities in primary school; to analyze the experience and educational practice of primary school in the most developed countries of the world; select an educational material in order to form inter-est in learning children; select and combine optimal forms, methods and means to achieve the goal in the educational process of primary school; provide and evaluate the consequences of the im-plementation of modern pedagogical teaching technolo-gies; be able to manage the educational process in order to prevent learning difficulties and conflict situations, stimulate students’ educational activities.

The article deals with the activity of teacher training institutions of Poltava region, features of their activity and foundation, characterizes the organization of the educational process. Emphasis is placed on the role of zemstvos in the activities of these educational institutions. In the second half of the 19th century, much attention was paid to the training of public school teachers. Public organizations (zemstvos, societies) and, in contrast to the previous time, the Ministry of Public Education played an important role. Thus, in 1865 in each educational district (except Kyiv) “at one of the county schools…, at the discretion of the trustee,… before the establishment in the future… special teacher’s seminaries” were established pedagogical courses. A year later their number doubled Kyiv educational district since 1862 at the University of St. Vladimir there was a “pedagogical school for the training of teachers of folk schools in the south-western provinces”). Teachers’ seminaries are secondary pedagogical educational institutions for the training of teachers of public primary schools. They had a 3- and 4-year course of study.Young people at least 16 years old of all classes and religions were admitted after passing the entrance exams according to the program of two-grade primary schools. Preparatory classes were opened for entrants. Maintained at the expense of state and zemstvo funds. Taught: the law of God, Russian and Church Slavonic languages, arithmetic, geometry, Russian and general history and geography, science, drawing, calligraphy, basics of pedagogy, gymnastics, singing, music, pedagogical practical classes, handicrafts. Extracurricular activities were practiced. Teachers were graduates of universities, teachers’ institutes, gymnasiums.

The urgent task of higher education is to comprehensively prepare future teachers for the implementation of state educational standards (SESs) for primary general, basic general and secondary full education, as well as mastering the requirements of the professional standard ‘teacher’. The key requirements of the SES RK include the formation of subject, meta-subject and personal results of students. The concept of ‘meta-subject learning outcomes’ acts as an undoubted innovation of SES RK, which is still not highlighted enough in the scientific and educational literature. In this regard, the need arises for purposeful general professional and subject-methodological preparation of the future teacher for work on the formation and development of meta-subject results for students, mastering the basic educational programmes of general education. The topic of this article is related to the pressing issues of the meta-subject content of education at a pedagogical university. Particular attention is paid to the theoretical justification of meta-subject matter in scientific research. On the example of the author’s programme of the new variable discipline ‘Meta-subject approach in primary education’, intended for students of the pedagogical direction of training, the basic conditions for the implementation of the meta-subject approach in network interaction with educational institutions are considered. The purpose of the article: to process diagnostic methods for the level of communicative and organizational abilities of future teachers. Methodical tools for the study of communicative competence of students, are directed at determining the power structures that ensure the success of professional activities of future professionals and the possibility of practical implementation of the acquired knowledge and personal qualities. The article substantiates the methodological tools of research of communicative competence of students, which is aimed at determining the properties that ensure the success of professional activities of future professionals and the possibility of practical implementation of the acquired knowledge and personal qualities. It is emphasized that communicative competence is a demonstrated area of successful communicative activity based on acquired values and strategies of language communication, supported by language skills and abilities, and communicative competence is defined in modern science as an integrative personal resource that ensures successful communication. It is determined that to identify the manifestation of the level of communicativeness of teachers it is necessary to diagnose communicative and organizational abilities, the ability to communicative self-control and the diagnosis of empathic abilities. The results of diagnosing communication and organizational skills are presented. It is emphasized that the lowest level of formation of future primary school teachers is found in such quality as empathic abilities. It is proposed to introduce specialized courses aimed at developing professionally significant communicative and organizational skills of future teachers on the basis of communicative practices, project activities, development of reflexive abilities, development of self-education skills, etc. as areas of solving problems of improving communicative competence. It is concluded that diagnostics is primarily a process of analysis, which allows to identify a system of rules, guided by which people organize their interaction, to understand which rules promote and which hinder the successful implementation of communicative interaction. Diagnosis of the level of formation of communicative qualities of future professionals is an integral part of the system of monitoring the quality of education in higher education institutions.

The article deals with the analysis of the state of the primary school teachers’ preparation for communicative-rhetorical activity at school, diagnostics of formation of communicative-rhetorical skills of future teachers. The theorists and practitioners give an important place to rhetoric as a science and an academic subject in the training teachers of the new generation. It is the communicative and rhetorical skills as an important component of the general and professional culture of the teacher that will help the primary school educator to organize the pedagogical process effectively, build convincing communication with children, their parents, colleagues, officials etc. However, in the theory and practice of pedagogical education and science the phenomenon of communicative-rhetorical competence as the most important component of the teacher's professional profile is not realized, its structure is not distinguished, psychological and pedagogical bases and, technology of its formation for students are not clearly defined, the world’s experience of rhetorical personality formation is studied. This was confirmed by the results of a survey conducted among undergraduate students, graduates of pedagogical faculties of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Kamyanets-Podilsky Ivan Ogienko National University, Drohobych State Pedagogical University of Ivan Franko, students of postgraduate pedagogical education Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytsky, Lviv regions. Thus, most respondents consider their level of communication and rhetorical skills to be insufficient. More than 70% are afraid of the audience; 84% do not know how to speak “without paperˮ. All respondents, including teachers, regardless of work experience, called the main reason for the ineffectiveness of pedagogical communication the fact that during professional training they did not have well-formed communication and rhetorical skills. The obtained results convincingly prove the need for their purposeful formation in future primary school teachers. Optimal construction and implementation of the educational process for the formation of students’ communicative and rhetorical skills is possible with a technological approach, the essence of which is to modernize the didactic system based on the study of its components and experimental verification of its effectiveness, as well as the introduction of in general, the rhetoric of the initial process in the pedagogical institution.

In the present study, the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management (IY TCM) program was implemented as a universal preventive intervention in a regular, lower primary school setting. Outcomes for teacher’s behavior management practice, problem behavior in the classroom and the school environment, teacher self- and collective efficacy, and classroom climate were examined. Using a quasi-experimental pre–post comparison group design, teacher-reported outcomes were compared between 163 teachers in 21 schools who participated in the IY TCM program and 139 teachers from 23 schools who did not participate in the program. No significant main effects of the IY TCM program on teacher-reported outcomes were revealed by linear mixed model analyses. The findings suggest that further evaluation is warranted. Future research should explore the impact of training teachers more consistently (e.g., provision of additional individual coaching outside the Teacher Classroom Management [TCM] sessions) and over a longer period than provided in the present study.

The education system must respond to changes in society, its demands and needs of students at all levels, so the mission of modern pedagogical institutions of higher education is to train teachers ready and able to accept such challenges. The article presents the experience of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Pedagogical Institute of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University in training students majoring in 012 "Preschool Education" and 013 "Primary Education" and methods of teaching them to implement digital tools in the process of forming foreign language communicative competence of 3-10 year-old children at preschool institutions and the New Ukrainian School. It should be noted that this work took place within the research on the scientific topic: "Strategy of foreign language teacher training in the context of European integration." The basis of the study is the understanding of the specifics of language as a means of communication, and therefore the emergence of new digital ways and tools of communication, their widespread penetration into various spheres of life naturally requires their use for educational purposes. In addition, the normative documents of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine recognize information and digital competence as a component of professional competence of a teacher of any subject, which also requires modernization of components of teacher training in early foreign language learning. In the process of research we relied on the levels of digital competence of teachers defined in DigCompEdu and aimed to prepare future teachers of early foreign language teaching for the practical application of digital tools and instruments taking into account Generation Theory, Alpha children, current foreign language programs in modern conditions of educational institutions in Ukraine. The main problem area of the article is the current issues of pedagogical science concerning training of future primary school teachers for the formation of functional literacy in pupils. The emergence of these issues is determined by globalization and integration processes in the educational system of Ukraine and in the world, social transformations that affect the content of primary education, as well as modern humanitarian, scientific and technological development. This requires each individual to show functional literacy. Based on this, there is an urgent need for fundamental changes in postclassical education, caused by modern European theories, educational models, the latest tools of professional activity of primary school teachers who are responsible for the provided educational services. These changes are necessary in the context of the recommendations provided by leading European and international educational organizations, and are confirmed by the results of international PISA research. The purpose of the research involves establishing the essence of the basic concept of “functional literacy” and its structure. The research found a link between functional literacy and soft skills. The program of the experiment provides for the diagnosis of the formation of functional literacy in future primary school teachers. Questionnaire and testing of final year students’ in specialty 013 Primary Education of Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy (Ukraine) confirmed the assumption that in most students functional literacy is formed at the middle level.

AbstractThe speed of development of biotechnology within agriculture, industry, and medicine has changed our lives, and we need a biotechnological literacy to understand it. This implies that teachers in primary schools need to be biotechnologically literate in order to educate future generations. The aim of this study was to investigate Swedish pre-service primary school teachers’ knowledge of and attitudes towards biotechnology and contextualize the results by comparing them with a corresponding group of Spanish teachers. Data was collected using the established questionnaire instrument Biotech XXI and analyzed statistically. The findings demonstrate that Swedish pre-service primary school teachers have knowledge gaps relating to the basic genetic concepts that underpin biotechnology, although they are aware of biotechnological applications. Their attitudes are quite positive towards biotechnological applications in health, but less so to buying and using genetically modified products. Higher levels of knowledge were correlated with more positive attitudes, indicating an attitudinal basis for expanding the knowledge of and teaching practices for biotechnology among primary teachers. The level of knowledge and attitudes in the Swedish sample were similar to those of the Spanish teachers, suggesting a similar situation may be prevalent in many countries. The results indicate a need to reconsider the science curricula within pre-service primary school teacher training programs in order to better prepare primary teachers for teaching biotechnological literacy.

The article substantiates the necessity to study the criterion-content and level structure regarding the formation of readiness of future elementary school teachers to organize dialogic teaching. While creating the program of the experimental work the author has taken into account the basic postulations of psychological and pedagogical science, concerning the problem of the readiness of future specialists to organize dialogic teaching, professionalism of activity and communication and dialogic pedagogical communication. The article offers indicative criteria for studying the readiness of future elementary school teachers to organize dialogic teaching of students: need-motivational, cognitive, social-communicative, reflexive-value and operational-activity, as well as indicators of their detection. The levels of readiness of future elementary school teachers to organize dialogic training are determined - high, medium and low. The author presents the results of the empirical study of the state of students' readiness for dialogic teaching of primary school students according to the need-motivational criterion. The results of diagnostics of future teachers' motivation of achievement, understanding of their motivational structure of dialogic teaching, internal motivation of their readiness for self-development, resistance to external influences (in particular, results of ranking by the degree of importance of motives of future pedagogical professional activity) are presented. It is proved that the introduction into the process of training of primary school teachers of the author’s model allows to change substantially the motivation of future specialists for future professional activity.

Abstract In the school year 2020–2021, the Covid-19 pandemic imposed distance learning (in Italian, the DAD acronym is used). Therefore, the Degree Course in Primary Education Sciences of the University of Perugia has proposed an innovative programme for the training of future teachers by developing a distance learning laboratory focusing coding and computational thinking applied to teaching in kindergarten and primary school. During the educational technologies laboratory, held by Prof. Floriana Falcinelli, the students experimented coding both without computer (unplugged) and using the Scratch software. The programmed animations and video games were in direct connection with the Lifelong Kindergarten of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, where Scratch was created. The highly innovative aspects concerned both the proposed contents and the dimension of interaction and collaboration as entirely developed in online environments.

Physics preparation for primary school teachers has received attention only in recent decades. Research on science education provides useful guidelines, often disregarded. Several interrelated research questions must be addressed by field research, namely, (a) which physics subjects to teach in primary school and its relationships with other sciences, technology, and mathematics; (b) how to prepare teachers to grasp the complexity of their tasks; and (c) how to bridge pre-service and in-service training. In this study, we describe innovative aspects of a course, based on the research and action research of our research group, that aims to overcome the limitations of a purely academic approach. Future teachers are dynamically involved in activities in informal and formal contexts and in the training of in-service teachers’ activities. The idea of cognitive resonance and a phenomenological approach to the modeling process are the basis of the activities that integrate key concepts of physics with transversal ones to develop skills in physics, mathematics, technology, and language. Field research carried out with qualitative methods shows that the course, despite being demanding, is well received by students. Dozens of students are then involved in the activities of the group when they start a teaching career at school.

The digital revolution has transformed the ways of doing, acting, and training in the university field. For this reason, as an objective of this work, social media was used to generate and share knowledge related to sustainability, classification of living beings, and the functioning of the human body. The information was collected through questionnaires, that were completed before and after the intervention program, as well as the work carried out by the students. The participants were 131 students enrolled on the Primary Education degree course of the University of Murcia. The students were well aware of social media, although initially not their educational use. This perception changed when having to make concrete proposals with Instagram and Pinterest, since students valued the wide potential of the use of these networks in teaching. As a result of this intervention, 266 images were generated on Pinterest related to the classification of living beings and 67 about the devices and systems of the human body. Additionally, in terms of the activity on Instagram, 213 publications were created, reaching 1454 followers and 7885 likes. In addition, the participants recognized social media as a source of resources for education, and therefore teachers must explore all the possibilities they offer.

In modern pedagogical science, the study of the preparedness of future specialists for professional activity remains relevant. The research of many scientists has been devoted to the study of this problem in recent years. Revealing the essence of the state of preparedness of future primary school teachers for professional activity in physical culture, some authors consider it as a personal characteristic of a specialist, others as functional. Modern higher school pedagogy is faced with an important theoretical and practical task, which concerns improving the process of professional development of the personality of a teacher in general and a primary school teacher, in particular, to work on physical education. Ways and methods of forming preparedness for teacher activity among students of the pedagogical university are a complex socio-psychological phenomenon. It combines a complex of individual and psychological qualities of the personality, a certain system of professional and pedagogical knowledge, abilities, and skills. The teacher’s preparedness for work is considered a form of connection of a vocational and pedagogical orientation with the worldview, life attitudes, and spiritual values, as well as with the ethical, strong-willed, and emotional spheres. A significant drawback in this field of knowledge and practice continues to be the weak connection of theory with practice in the process of training in IHE. References to the experience of schools in the study of theory, the orientation to knowledge in the process of pedagogical practice don’t solve the problem yet, we are studying. We need special work of IHE, which would help to understand the theoretical and practical preparedness of students for pedagogical activity.

The Japanese government has actively promoted Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) that UNESCO advocates and is going to fully implement the school reform that aims to enhance next generation’s 21st century skills by the year of the Olympic in Tokyo, 2020. So far, Japanese schools focused on basic skills. However, the presenter believes that next generation’s schools need to be reconstructed with 21st century learning and ESD as their base. Now the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is taking actions to fix the comprehensive conditions for the educational reform. Especially MEXT focuses on the reform of the comprehensive system of training, employment, and development of teachers. The basic directions of the system reform is as follows: to hold “the Teacher Professional Development Consortium” by the association between education boards of the prefecture and universities; to develop the index of teacher professional development based on the fundamental principles by MEXT; to improve the curriculum of teacher training or development; and to assess the ability and quality that teachers need to hold. Since 2010, the Shizuoka University has promoted the systematic reform that integrated teacher education and in-service education. Such a reform corresponds to the era of globalization. The basic concept, if I state briefly, is to nurture and support the teachers who can teach for 21st century learning in their classrooms. To achieve this concept, the Faculty of Education, Shizuoka University, of which primary purpose is to train future teachers, is going to open the Elementary Learning Development Major in April of 2016, as a part of the organizational reform of teacher training. In the program, students will deal with contemporary educational problems and use interdisciplinary methods. In order to support teacher professional development and their research, School of Education established the Research and Education Center for the Learning Sciences (RECLS) in April of 2013 and the Center for Promoting Higher-Quality Teacher Education (PHTE) in April of 2014. In addition, it established Advanced Professional Development in School Education in 2009 and Cooperative Doctoral Course in Subject Development in 2012. Teachers in next generation schools should hold the practical abilities to organize their classes based on theories and methods of interdisciplinary and comprehensive learning. The Shizuoka University will promote such a reform and research teacher training, if possible, in association with the universities in Indonesia, ASEAN and Asia.

This paper discusses a model of a mathematics teacher professional development implemented in Italy and Hungary with in-service and pre-service mathematics teachers. The model focuses on comparative geometry, and it develops with the use of an artifact: the Lénárt spheres. The teacher training model is the result of several years of experience of the two authors both as regards the activities in the classroom with the Lénárt spheres and as regards the training of teachers in this field. The proposed teachers’ professional development, in addition to providing ideas for activities to be implemented in the classroom, has the objective of proposing reflective activities from a community of inquiry perspective; during the activities, mediated by the artifact, both the Pedagogical Content Knowledge and the Mathematical Content Knowledge are taken into consideration (Ball et al., 2008). The model has been implemented in Italy in more than 15 training courses taught in the last 5 years, both with primary school teachers and with secondary school teachers. In Hungary, the model is at the basis of elective courses under the title ‘Ball Geometry’ at ELTE University, Budapest, for decades. These courses have been aimed at prospective preschool and elementary school teachers at the Faculty of Primary and Preschool Education, as well as future secondary teachers at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The subject of the teachers’ professional development paths corresponds to the comparative geometry between the plane and the sphere. After the presentation of the model, some examples of activities implemented in Hungary during the pandemic period will be illustrated and commented from a didactic point of view, which will serve to exemplify the path described. The described path was carried out remotely in online mode through synchronous and asynchronous activities. The distance obviously changed the way we interacted with the artifact, but it did not prevent the achievement of the courses’ objectives.

Early algebra proposes to incorporate algebra in primary school from the first years of schooling. The success of this incorporation depends, to a large extent, on the training of teachers, so the objective of this article is to study whether the degree of algebraic knowledge of student teachers at the beginning of their training. To conduct this, 106 preservice teachers were given a questionnaire. This survey is based on two daily life situations. They had to propose tasks to develop algebraic reasoning in primary school students. Most of the participants designed tasks in which they assigned specific values to the indeterminate ones and solved them arithmetically. In this way, they transformed open situations and numerous opportunities to promote algebraic thinking in students through the generalization and representation of relationships and functions into closed single-solution problems that do not promote algebraic thinking. We can see from the results that the participants’ algebraic knowledge is insufficient. Therefore, it is necessary to include in their training process the programs and experiences that will allow them to design tasks in order to detect and promote algebraic thinking in their future students. Sequences of tasks are presented to develop both situations by generalizing and representing relationships and functions, which can serve as a starting point for future training programs and experiences.

STEAM activities, STEAM formal and non-formal education, STEAM programs, STEAM schools, STEAM field, STEAM open access centers and others are often used terms in the society and in the education society in particular. STEAM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEAM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. STEAM education emphasizes art and technical creativity as interdisciplinary access, combining it with a rational combination with the peculiarities of individual subjects. Most countries declare STEAM education as a priority of their national education system. All countries link STEAM education reform with primary and secondary schools. Taking into account today's trends and future insights, education and training play a very important role. After all, it is important that Lithuania took a challenge - by 2025 teacher is a prestigious profession. The country lacks a new generation of teachers, teachers with a different approach to teaching and learning. In the near future there should be new specialties that will expand and change the field of the teacher's work, adapting it to contemporary realities. In the future, education will become more personalized; students will be offered personalized training programs. Much attention will be paid to increasing the efficiency of mental activity: there will be programs for improving memory, reading speed, increasing concentration, etc. Integrated access to STEAM subjects creates the conditions for the formation of such a human thinking, that allows a complex understanding of the world, making responsible decisions, and foreseeing further paths. Everyone agrees that integrated access brings benefits to all stakeholders. Keywords: interdisciplinary approach, STEAM education, STEAM literacy.

The article highlights theoretical aspects of the socio-pedagogical direction of pedagogical practice of future primary school teachers. The tasks of pedagogical practice as a mandatory component of professional training of future specialists are outlined. The necessity of involvement employers in cooperation with higher education institutions to ensure a high level of continuous practical training, creating conditions for professional development and self-realization of future teachers are substantiated. Great emphasis is placed on the need for creative use of theoretical knowledge and practical skills working with students, modern teaching technologies, students’ educational and social development, as well as systematic professional self-improvement and self-development. It was proved that in the process of teacher training system pedagogical practice performs a number of important functions: educational, developmental, diagnostic and corrective, communicative, organizational (management), prognostic, preventive, etc. The approximate content of this student practice in general educational institutions is given taking into account such directions, as: work with deviant and gifted pupils, inclusive education, sociocultural animation, etc. The results of an empirical study on the readiness of graduates of pedagogical specialties for the practical use of social and educational technologies in school are presented. The difficulties most often faced by respondents in working with students were identified, including: work with different categories of parents, individual counseling of students, resolution of pedagogical conflicts, implementation of diagnostic activities and socio-pedagogical communication, etc. The author proved that combination of theoretical and practical teacher training, integration of teaching with research and experimental work would contribute to the practical orientation of the educational process at the university, active search and implementation of non-traditional forms and methods of teaching, in particular in socio-pedagogical aspects. The article partially uses the materials of the author's dissertation “Theoretical and methodological principles of professional training of future primary school teachers for socio-pedagogical activities” (2015) for the degree of Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences.

Teachers need to be prepared to attend to all learners regardless of their abilities or needs. This implies that future teachers must develop, throughout their initial training, the necessary competencies to provide inclusive education to all students. The aim of this research was to analyze the level of development of competencies related to inclusion and attention to diversity among university students of a degree in primary education. Based on the project developed by the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education (EADSNE) on the profile of the inclusive teacher, an ad hoc survey was prepared based on the four fundamental competencies proposed: valuing student diversity, supporting all students, working as part of a team, and developing one’s professional and personal qualities. This survey was administered to 440 students of the degree in primary education from the University of La Laguna (San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain). The results showed a positive development of the four competencies, with a higher development of the competencies of continuing professional development. It was also found that the students had the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for promoting inclusion and encouraging attention to diversity in their classrooms.

Teacher training colleges and universities in Zimbabwe currently fall under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development (MHTESTD) whose mission is to develop and deliver a knowledgeable and skilled human capital through higher and tertiary Education 5.0, science and technology development using a heritage based philosophy, for the production of quality goods and services. The core values of the Ministry are integrity, humility, innovation and productivity. The philosophy of Education 5.0 system is centred on five pillars which include teaching, research, community service, innovation and industrialisation while the previous 3.0 design was centred on three aspects which are teaching, research and community service. Thus, teachers who are being trained at Zimbabwe’s colleges and universities will be required to acquire skills and knowledge to produce goods, services and ideas and also to impart such knowledge and skills to their learners. The mathematics curriculum inclusive of the syllabi, schemes of work and timetables at a teacher training institution in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe was critically analysed. Two randomly selected lectures in progress were observed and five purposively chosen lecturers interviewed. The study addresses the questions of whether and to what extent Education 5.0 is being realised, the challenges currently being faced and the future prospects of the philosophy. The paper concludes by giving recommendations for sustainable professional development of primary school mathematics teachers in Zimbabwe.

Recently, there has been much talk about how the humanities and social sciences are losing their importance and are not necessary for the state. There is no doubt that under current globalization conditions there are more opportunities for technological, physical and biomedical sciences to establish themselves in Europe and elsewhere than the humanities. However, one should not forget that the development of a humanitarian culture has been and will be one of the most important state objectives when it comes to education. When formulating the objectives of the education reform, one of the most important objectives was to make students realize that they are not only the users, but also the creators of their native culture and that they are responsible for the development and preservation of culture. Meilė Lukšienė, the main proponent of the education reform, emphasized cultural integrity and was against a mosaic culture, where a person who receives a lot of information is unable to cope with it and build the overall picture. It is no coincidence that the National School Concept states that “the primary and essential condition for the development of human spiritual life is the native language. It is the major attribute of national and cultural identity and the expression of the national culture”. In her works, M. Lukšienė, one of the authors of the National School Concept, maintained that the object of education in the national school is “the person in the cultural context. It is impossible to educate a person in isolation, without regard to the needs of the specific nation and its culture”. When we educate a young person at general education schools, we build a foundation for the formation of his self-esteem and develop his respect for the nation, state, language, history and culture. One of the most important subjects with which to develop and educate this is the native language and literature. This subject shapes the values of a young person and confers humanism on the entire educational process. Humanization of the educational content and particularly the native language have a significant effect on a person’s development. Therefore the approach and attitudes of future native language teachers are certainly important. The paradigm of liberal education is entering general education schools in Lithuania, so the change of the teacher training paradigm is extremely important. The current teacher training paradigm still focuses on the training of subject teachers. Teacher training, very much like all education, is more conservative than innovative. Subject-oriented teacher training is still (or even) preferred by general education schools, so change in the higher education system is even slower. However, it is likely that Lithuanian language teachers could be the ones closer to the liberal education paradigm. This article provides a survey of the approach of future teachers towards their professional activity, premises of pedagogical activities that they consider important and the expectations of current Lithuanian language teachers from students/future teachers. The aim of this article is to analyze the approach of future Lithuanian language and literature teachers towards their professional activity and to discuss the teachers’ pedagogical expectations within the context of the liberal education paradigm. The following are the objectives of the research: 1) to discuss the most important premises of pedagogical activities which are important for future Lithuanian language and literature teachers; 2) to clarify essential aspects of the approach of future Lithuanian language and literature teachers towards their professional activity; and 3) to present the expectations of current Lithuanian language and literature teachers within the context of the liberal education paradigm. The research problem of the article is whether students and working teachers prefer the provisions of the liberal education paradigm. Research methods: analysis of research literature, analytical descriptive survey of students using a questionnaire, questionnaire data analysis, and teacher survey.

The article has a substantiation of an urgency to solve the problem associated with the defi nition of the structure of professional competence of teachers. This structure is represented by species competencies. The problem was determined by the needs of the teacher training system of teachers in the knowledge of these competencies. This requirement is related with the design of additional vocational training programs of teachers. The authors off er an analysis of psychological and educational literature disclosing the problem of determining the structure of professional competence of teachers of secondary schools and the structure of professional competence of future teachers (students). An analysis of the scientifi c literature shows that in modern pedagogical science is not developed a unifi ed structure of professional competence of the teacher. The authors off er an original solution to the problem of determining the structure of professional competence of teachers from the position active approach, which is based on the basis of the structure of pedagogical activity of the teacher (V.A. Slastenin, N.V. Kuzmin, A.I. Shcherbakov). The authors have developed and proposed a "list" of professional competencies of teachers of basic and secondary education. The authors point out that the list of professional competence of the teacher of primary education, pre-school education can be represented in a similar way. Issues that need to be further resolution, were identifi ed by the authors.

Modern primary school teachers must implement training, development, and education based on knowledge of the individual characteristics of the younger pupil, be able to manage the process of the schoolchild’s constant change and ensure his ascent to a higher level of development, carry out the scientific-pedagogical search, solving the problems of the child's personality formation on a scientific basis. The relevance of this research is determined by the fact that it considers the problem of mastering communication skills as an integral part of speech communication skills, which is a necessary condition for successful social adaptation of the trainee. This article discusses the issue of determining the theoretical knowledge level of future primary school teachers for the formation of communication skills of younger learners. For this research, a research experiment (2017-2018), a search experiment (2018-2019), education experiment (2019-2020) was designed. The survey of students was conducted to determine their own opinion about the formation of their knowledge, skills, and abilities. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 152 students. The developed method is more likely to create information about the formation of communication skills of primary school students than the traditional method of future teachers. The aims of this research, based on a case study (trainee teachers of Primary degree and Secondary Education–MAES of the University of Valencia, Spain), are to analyse the students’ memories and perceptions of their training about floods; to examine the interest in teaching these contents in Social Science and/or Geography classes; and to analyse their proposals to improve teacher training. Methodologically, a questionnaire was distributed among 204 future teachers. The results indicate that the majority, in both groups, (degree and MAES) consider themselves to have a medium level of preparedness to teach these contents to schoolchildren (value of 3): 47.0% of the degree students and 47.4% of the MAES students. In both groups, the majority (89.2% degree; 57.9% MAES) indicate that they had not received training in the university or if they had, it had been insufficient. The study reveals that both those who have received training and those who have not believe themselves to have a similar level of preparedness. As the results of this study show, there is still a lot of ground to be covered in the field of education so that it may become an essential tool to generate a society that is more resilient to climate change.

Mathematics is the universal compartment through which both the study and the discovery of the surrounding environment take place. At the same time, mathematics is the academic discipline through which the formation of logical and practical thinking is pursued, so for the students of pedagogical specialties this discipline is an abstract science about which students know only what they have learned in gymnasium. Therefore, the motivation and professional orientation for studying mathematics are necessary, allowing in this context the application of mathematical knowledge and skills acquired in practical activities. This article thoroughly analyses the concept of motivation, but also addresses the motivation issue of the students in post-secondary technical vocational education – future primary school teachers in the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, the problematic aspects of the professional training process of future primary school teachers are determined.

Recent literature has shown the low levels of reflexivity student teachers exhibit when doing reflective writing and the lack of a training program in their initial training to help them. A training program that was developed to support future teachers’ reflective writing was implemented and the program’s results were evaluated. The program was based on a combination of theories from the fields of teacher training and writing instruction. The training program was offered to a class of 16 future primary school teachers in French-speaking Belgium (three males and 13 females, averaging 20 years old) who were in their final year of training. They rewrote a reflective text several times and the 64 texts produced were analyzed quantitatively. The results showed that the training program enabled participants to make major progress from one draft to another and thus improve their reflective writing skills. In addition, a qualitative single case study showed how one student’s writing evolved during the training program. Among the practical implications that emerged from this study were the recommendations to include time in the training curricula dedicated to the teaching of reflective writing and to train trainers to support the writing of reflective texts.

The risk of flooding is the main natural hazard that affects the European Mediterranean region. This hazard has worsened in recent decades due to the occupation of flood areas and the effects of climate change. Therefore, understanding and gaining a more in-depth knowledge of social representations of flooding is important. In addition, interest in this subject is accentuated in the case of future teachers. This is because it is mandatory to teach this subject in Primary Education (Grades 1–6; Social Sciences subject). The aims of this research are: (1) To explore the instruction about flooding received by future teachers during their school period, and (2) to examine their perception about factors influencing flood risk. Methodologically, a questionnaire was distributed among future teachers of Primary Education (Faculty of Teaching Training, University of Valencia, Spain). The results regarding the respondents’ perception show that only 21.3% of the future teachers received instruction about floods during their school period. With reference to factors that influence floods, they mostly believe that the main factors are climate change and the spatial land management. Furthermore, 51.3% believe that this phenomenon has been increasing over the last few years, and 82.5% think that it rains heavier today.

Various studies show that the level of knowledge achieved by pupils is influenced by the level of knowledge of their teachers. In this article, we focus on geometric thinking and the solutions for geometric tasks through a study of future teachers of primary education. The research sample consisted of 59 master’s students from the Teacher Training for Primary Education (TTPE) program. To determine the level of geometric thinking of TTPE students, the van Hiele geometric test was used. Two geometric multi-item tasks were proposed and the students’ solutions to these tasks were quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated. The main goal was to analyze students’ misconceptions while solving tasks and to compare and reveal the connections between their solutions and their achieved level of geometric thinking. A statistical implicative analysis was used for a deeper analysis, namely the statistical software C.H.I.C. The research findings show that more than 40% of TTPE students in the research sample did not reach the required level of geometric thinking. The achieved level of the geometric thinking of students is also influenced by the type of high school education. We observed problems with understanding the concept of the triangle and square in TTPE students. The connections between the solutions of two geometric tasks and the achieved level of geometric thinking were also revealed.

Purpose This paper aims to discuss issues related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. It is emphasized that the need to prepare students with twenty-first-century skills through STEM-related teaching is strong, especially at the elementary level. The authors present selected previous experiences, publications, research into the study topic, and review examples of primary school robotics and programming curricula, as well as associated educational activities. The authors stress that workshops, using kits to build and programme robots, are a modern form of interdisciplinary education of children and youth. Design/methodology/approach The rationale for conducting such activities in schools is found in the European reference framework in the context of training of key competences. Classes in robotics – if properly taught – will have an impact on the development of mathematical literacy and scientific–technical information and social competences. At the same time, competence is understood to mean a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to the situation. Besides, an analysis is presented of basic legal regulations in this matter as well as results of a survey, conducted in Poland and Ukraine among in-service teachers and prospective teachers. Findings The study was carried out with the participation of 91 primary school teachers and future teachers in the province of Silesia and at the University of Silesia in Poland, and in Ukraine, at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University. The survey contained 15 questions about the pedagogical research “Robotics and children”. The study was carried out to determine the needs of modern education to introduce the basics of robotics in the educational process of primary school. Originality/value It can be expected that the findings from the prior Polish and Ukrainian surveys can be extrapolated into curricula for secondary schools and vocational education and training (VET) in the coming years.
