The volume is a collection of the papers from a study seminar held at the University of Florence Faculty of Education and Training Sciences in March 2012 entitled Formazione e orientamento al lavoro. Le sfide della disabilità adulta. The aim of the initiative was to highlight a topic/problem which has little or no resonance in civil society, or in study and research contexts, namely, training and career guidance for disabled adults. The volume also recounts a course of studies carried out by Le Rose, a cooperative from the municipality of Florence, involving empirical research on the relationship between disability and job placement. As well as proposing an interdisciplinary and multifaceted reflection on a definitely innovative topic, the intention is to emphasize the central place of work in the lives of all people and the role that suitable education and training plays in constructing the adult identity. Care for the place where the job training is carried out, as well as attention to the relationships and actions pursued by the workers undertaking to develop job placement programmes, are central dimensions for the construction of a renewed culture of inclusion, citizenship and social and personal recognition.

This is the second of two books about African-American female chemists. The first book (African-American Women Chemists, 2011) focused on the early pioneers--women chemists from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Act. African American Women Chemists in the Modern Era focuses on contemporary women who have benefited from the Civil Rights Act and are now working as chemists or chemical engineers. This book was produced by taking the oral history of women who are leaders in their field and who wanted to tell the world how they suceeded. It features eighteen amazing women in this book and each of them has a claim to fame, despite hiding in plain sight. These women reveal the history of their lives from youth to adult. Overall, Jeannette Brown aims to inspire women and minorities to pursue careers in the sciences, as evidenced by the successful career paths of the women that came before them.

This chapter examines the epic scope of Gregory Benford's series of novels commonly called the Galactic Center saga. The works that make up the Galactic Center series span nineteen years of Benford's career. They encompass as well a changing landscape of science fiction (SF), in which space adventure, once central to the genre, becomes a near relic. The first novel in the series, In the Ocean of Night, reflects the period's spirit of high adventure in the promise of space travel. In the subsequent novels, produced in the cyberpunk era, Benford continues to pursue the question of mankind's condition in the face of science's genuinely expanding universe. The central figure of Benford's Galactic series is Nigel Walmsley, the NASA astronaut who dominates In the Ocean of Night and its sequel, Across the Sea of Suns(1984), then returns in the strange timescape of the final novel, Sailing Bright Eternity (1996). This chapter considers E. E. Smith's Lensman series as Benford's forerunner, in the sense that it has scientific extrapolation and a story with genuine cosmic sweep.

Chapter 2 follows the making and early viewing of the anatomy room at the Institute of the Sciences. The chapter focuses on the impressive career of Ercole Lelli (1702–1766), the Bolognese artificer and anatomical modeller who was in charge of its realization. It approaches the anatomy room as a multi-functional venue of anatomical pursuit and examines the variety of meanings associated with its models as well as its fashioning as a site for the training of the eye and the development of observational proficiency. Moreover, reconstructing Lelli’s manifold skills as an artisan and a broker, Chapter 2 examines how his involvement in the making of the anatomy room allowed Lelli to transform himself from harquebus maker into connoisseur. In particular, it investigates how Lelli relied on his manual and artisanal skills to act as a go-between across artisanal, anatomical, artistic, and antiquarian domains, ultimately fashioning himself as a connoisseur.

This book develops a reading of Nietzsche’s concept of ‘the ascetic ideal’, through which he tracks the evolution, mutation, and expansion of the system of slave moral values that he associates primarily with Judaeo-Christian religious belief through diverse fields of Western European culture—not just religion and morality, but aesthetics, science, and philosophy. The work of Stanley Cavell and Michael Fried, and its impact in the philosophy of film and literature, is central here, as is J. M.Coetzee’s on the philosophy of autobiography; Martin Heidegger’s critique of science and technology is also addressed. In so doing it also offers an interpretation of his genealogical method that aims to rebut standard criticisms of its nature, and to emphasize its potential for enhancing philosophical understanding more generally. The focus throughout is on developments in those fields which occurred after the end of Nietzsche’s intellectual career, and in particular on influential modes of thought and practice that have a contemporary significance. However, the goal is not simply to argue that Nietzsche’s diagnosis and critique retain considerable merit. It is also to show that Nietzsche is himself significantly indebted to the ideals he criticizes; and that this opens up a possibility of synthesizing elements of his approach with those drawn from its target. Hence, the book also tracks various ways in which the object of Nietzsche’s criticism has further mutated (just as his genealogical method would suggest), and in doing so has generated ways of pursuing the values central to asceticism that avoid Nietzsche’s criticisms.
