Life histories describe how genotypes schedule their reproductive effort throughout life in response to factors that affect their survival and fecundity. Life histories are solutions that selection has produced to solve the problem of how to persist in a given environment. These solutions differ tremendously within and among species. Some organisms mature within months of attaining life, others within decades; some produce few, large offspring as opposed to numerous, small offspring; some reproduce many times throughout their lives while others die after reproducing just once. The exponential pace of life-history research provides an opportune time to engage and re-engage new generations of students and researchers on the fundamentals and applications of life-history theory. Chapters 1 through 4 describe the fundamentals of life-history theory. Chapters 5 through 8 focus on the evolution of life-history traits. Chapters 9 and 10 summarize how life-history theory and prediction has been applied within the contexts of conservation and sustainable exploitation. This primer offers an effective means of rendering the topic accessible to readers from a broad range of academic experience and research expertise.

This chapter examines the drafting history, nature, scope, (mis)use, and relevance of the so-called ‘saving clauses’ of the Indian Constitution: Article 31A, Article 31B read with the Ninth Schedule, and Article 31C. They are designed to protect laws aimed at agrarian reforms or at implementing certain Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSPs) from a potential constitutional challenge on the ground of violating fundamental rights (FRs), andexceptionally allow certain laws to override FRs. This chapter offers an alternative reading of the saving clauses and discusses the Ninth Schedule, arguing that, despite being misused in the past, it might not be abused in the future, and that the Basic Structure doctrine is inappropriate to test the validity of laws inserted in the Ninth Schedule. It also suggests that the judiciary misconstrued their role with respect to the right to property as a FR, as well as the value of DPSPs relative to FRs.

Several fecal sludge desludging options and the implication of each option are discussed in the book, including their financial implications. The book also presents methods to calculate the operational cost and how the cost can be used as the basis to determine the desludging tariff. This book was written based on the experience of USAID - IUWASH (Indonesia Urban Water and Sanitation and Health) program in assisting several Indonesian cities in preparing their mandatory desludging program. Some of Indonesia’s specific narratives and terms used in the original book have been adapted for the benefit of readers from other countries. This chapter discusses standardized mental test schedules. Many brief standardized assessment tools have been advocated over the past two or three decades but many have largely fallen into disuse. This chapter focuses, therefore, on two of the most commonly used brief assessment schedules: the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with an analysis of their strengths, weaknesses, and applications. The MoCA is freely available and a link to the website is included. They are contrasted with the ACE-III which is described in Chapter 7. The chapter also describes two longer tests which are widely used in dementia research: the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS) and the Cambridge Cognitive Examination–Revised (CAMCOG-R). Finally, it includes a description of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale–Cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog), which is used widely in drug evaluation studies.

La Meri (Russell Meriwether Hughes, 1899–1988) was a performing artist, choreographer, teacher, and writer who built her career on ethnologic dance from many parts of the world. In the 1920s and 1930s, under the management of her agent-husband Guido Carreras, she toured in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the United States. Despite the heavy schedule of travel and performances, she was able to obtain instruction in local dance genres, purchase costumes, and obtain recordings of the music in many of the countries. The new material would then be added to her concert programs. In late 1939, touring was no longer possible because of World War II, so La Meri and Carreras settled in New York City. There, she established a school, the Ethnologic Dance Center, and dance companies. She continued performing in New York and on tour in the United States, and, in addition to teaching and concert work, created original choreographies using techniques such as those of India and Spain. In 1960, she moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she continued her work until 1984, when she returned to San Antonio. In addition to her practical work in dance, La Meri also published writings that set forth her conceptions, understandings, goals and methodologies. This book is both a biography of La Meri and an analysis of the significance of her theory and practice, with attention to her own performance, choreography, writings, and teaching.

Most studies of intergenerational mobility focus on adjacent generations, and there is limited knowledge about multigenerational mobility—that is, status transmission across three generations. We examine multigenerational educational and occupational mobility in India, using a nationally representative data set, the Indian Human Development Survey, which contains information about education and occupation for three generations. We find that mobility has increased over generations for education, but not for occupation. We also find that there are stark differences across social groups, with individuals belonging to socially disadvantaged communities in India lagging behind in social progress. Multigenerational mobility for Muslims in education and occupation have decreased in comparison to Hindus over the three generations. While we find that there is an increase in educational mobility for other disadvantaged groups such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes compared to General Castes, we do not find evidence of increased occupational mobility over the three generations.

Chapter 6 discusses various mental test schedules used over the years, from the 10-item Hodgkinson Mental Test, to the much more complex Dementia Rating Scale (DRS. For practical purposes, however, such tests can be divided into two broad groups: (i) the brief schedules that can easily be used in the clinic, or at the bedside, and do not require specialized equipment or training, and (ii) the more elaborate scales, which are used largely, at least at present, in research studies, and require the purchase of test materials and some training in their administration. The Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE) was developed in an attempt to bridge this divide and to provide a test with greater sensitivity to early cognitive decline than the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and which could also differentiate between different brain diseases. The remainder of this chapter covers possible alternative cognitive screening instruments. It describes three of the most commonly used brief assessment schedules: the MMSE, the Information–Memory–Concentration (IMC) Test, and the 10-item Hodgkinson Mental Test, which is derived from the IMC Test; plus two longer tests, which are widely used in dementia research: the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS) and the Cambridge Cognitive Examination—Revised (CAMCOG-R). Finally it also includes a description of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog) since it has been used widely in drug evaluation studies.

You are time-biased if you have systematic preferences about when events happen. There are different varieties of time bias. Near-biased agents discount events as they are scheduled further in the future. Future-biased agents discount events because they have already occurred. This book argues that it is irrational to be time-biased. In the process it develops the theory of temporal neutrality for rational planning. The first part (Chapters 1–4) describes two arguments against near bias: one based on well-being and one based on arbitrariness. It also develops a theory of egoistic concern. The second part (Chapters 5–7) argues that structurally similar arguments can be mounted against future bias. In the process it diagnoses issues we have understanding and measuring past discounting. The final part (Chapters 8–11) explains why we are time-biased and shows how the theory of temporal neutrality can help us determine when to stick to our past commitments, how to value an afterlife, and how to discover meaning in life even if we cannot make a permanent difference in the world.

Indian society is highly stratified and hierarchical. Caste, class, and gender all contribute to an individual’s status. A large body of literature explores the importance of each of these. This chapter examines the relationship between caste and gender inequality in three states in India. When households are grouped using conventional, government-defined categories of caste, we find patterns that are consistent with existing literature: lower-caste women are more likely to participate in the labour market, have greater decision making autonomy within their households, and experience greater freedom of movement. When households are grouped by the narrower sub-caste categories of jati, where caste is lived and experienced, we find the relationships are far more varied and nuanced. These results suggest that focusing on broad caste categories such as ‘scheduled castes’ and ‘scheduled tribes’ can be misleading for understanding the relationship between caste and gender.

This chapter describes the qualitative methodology used in this study. Risman and her students and colleagues designed an interview schedule to study gender as a social structure. Questions were asked about experiences across different life contexts. Questions focused on the individual level of identities, the interactional level of expectations they held for others and faced by themselves, and their macro-level ideologies and experiences of institutional constraints. Most of the 116 respondents were from Chicagoland and were recruited at local universities, LGBTQ centers, and by word of mouth. The majority‒minority sample was also gender diverse including transgender, genderqueer, and other nonconforming respondents. All data were recorded and transcribed for qualitative data analysis. A preview of the findings is included as a conclusion to the chapter.

This chapter describes the history of the 2002 Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Domestic Arbitration Rules. The first edition of the SIAC Rules, released in 1991, applied to all arbitrations (i.e. both international and domestic). SIAC subsequently released separate rules tailored for domestic arbitrations in May 2001 and again in September 2002. However, the SIAC Domestic Arbitration Rules were repealed on 1 July 2007 by Schedule 1 to the 2007 SIAC Rules. Thus, since 1 July 2007 there is no longer a separate body of rules for SIAC domestic arbitrations, with only one exception, namely a tribunal's power to render a summary award in favour of a claimant or counter-claimant if there is no valid defence to some or all of a claim. The 2016 SIAC Rules, however, do not have any special provisions for domestic arbitrations.

This chapter discusses changes in the categories of ethnicity and immigration in the US census. From the beginning of the twentieth century to the 1930s, statistics on immigration and ethnicity took first place in schedules, published reports, and public policy. Not only did census figures establish immigration quotas, but census statisticians, with their methods and their culture, constructed the mechanism for exclusion by national origin. However, after 1928 there was a retreat from measuring ethnicity, which became evident in the 1930 and 1940 censuses by a marked lack of interest in questions of place of birth, mother tongue, and degree of assimilation. The history of the categories that made it possible to measure ethnicity is a complex one, involving three main groups of actors: advocates of immigration restriction, representatives of immigrant populations, and Census Bureau statisticians, with each group attempting to respond to contradictory demands and to defend their own interests.

Metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) is a medical emergency that requires early diagnosis and treatment. Medical management or surgery can be indicated depending on different factors including duration of the symptoms, patient comorbidities, and hospital resources. Patients scheduled for decompressive laminectomy due to MSCC may present to the operating room with pain, high requirements of opioids, hematological disorders, impending bone fractures, nausea and vomiting, and electrolytes disorders. Multimodal intraoperative monitoring is needed to minimize spinal cord injury. The immediate postoperative care of these patients is directed to accelerate recovery by providing multimodal analgesia, encouraging early ambulation, and optimizing their nutritional status.

Basic theory analyses the entrepreneur's role in the economic system. Of the four conventional factors of production, namely: land, labour, capital, and organization (or entrepreneurship), objective demand and supply schedules are possible for the first three. By contrast, a demand curve for entrepreneurship cannot be drawn, as it is for the entrepreneurs themselves to decide whether or not to enter the production process as a freelancer. Harvey Leibenstein, a development economist, however, constructed a supply curve for entrepreneurs, linking their anticipations of per capita income growth with the rate of expansion of entrepreneurship in terms of their contribution to such growth in incomes. Hence many theorists portray the corporate drives of entrepreneurs as forward-looking ones. How, then, can biographies most satisfactorily discuss such drives in a chronological narrative of a life from cradle to the grave? Childhood influences, such as premature responsibilities through a parent's death, and struggles for recognition in early adulthood have to be brought out, as well as the precise explanation of finally winning through.

This chapter reviews the literature on work–family interventions focusing on linkages to evidence-based employee health and well-being outcomes and on return on investment (ROI) in organizations. Work–family interventions include, but are not limited to, alternative work arrangements, family supportive supervisor behavior training, work redesign to increase schedule control, and the provision of dependent care supports. Work–family interventions have the goal of reducing work–family conflict and in turn increasing the health and well-being of employees and the organizations in which they work (Kossek, Hammer, Kelly, and Moen, 2014). Sixteen studies were identified that meet our criteria. The chapter provides a discussion of establishing the work–family intervention value proposition with a focus on ROI, concluding with a discussion of approaches and guidelines for future work–family intervention research and practice.

Abandoned housing projects is one of the major problems in housing industry in Peninsular Malaysia.The reasons leading to this problem are many.This catastrophe has caused multifarious problems to the stakeholders, particularly the purchasers who become the aggrieved parties.To date, there is no effective and once-and-for-all means to face the problems of abandoned housing projects.One of the factors which causes abandonment of housing projects in Peninsular Malaysia, is the lack of political will on the part of the government to adopt an affirmative better housing delivery system such as the full build then sell system and the introduction of a housing development insurance to face the problems of housing abandonment.This book provides in-depth analysis of the terms and conditions of the statutory standard sale and purchase agreements as enshrined in Schedules G, H, I and J of the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Regulations 1989.The objective of this book, among others, is to identify the weaknesses of the terms of the agreements, if any, which may have contributed to the problem of abandoned housing projects and their consequential troubles. This book offers an interpretation of the two fragmentary texts of the P. Vindobonensis G 40822, now widely referred to as the Muziris papyrus. Without these two texts, there would be no knowledge of the Indo-Roman trade practices. The book also compares and contrasts the texts of the Muziris papyrus with other documents pertinent to Indo-Mediterranean (or Indo-European) trade in ancient, medieval, and early modern times. These other documents reveal the commercial and political geography of ancient South India; the sailing schedule and the size of the ships plying the South India sea route; the commodities exchanged in the South Indian emporia; and the taxes imposed on the Indian commodities en route from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. When viewed against the twin backdrops of ancient sources on South Indian trade and of medieval and early modern documents on pepper commerce, the two texts become foundational resources for the history of commercial relationships between South India and the West.

This chapter analyzes strategies of program arrangement developed to manage sonic flows and listener attention, the industrial exigencies shaping them, and means by which they became taken-for-granted aspects of modern experience. Regulatory mandates for live programming positioned radio as a new studio art that would supply its own content, a system of private competition favored continuous streaming of regularly scheduled programming to attract and hold listener attention, and conflicting mandates for varied but unified programming were resolved by dividing the broadcast day into a series of larger programming blocks. Consolidated on the production side through internal record-keeping mechanisms such as the program log, these scheduling strategies were communicated to listeners through on-air announcements and newspaper listings that helped to naturalize their emerging structures of broadcast flow and facilitate a larger commodification of sound central to the success of modern audio media.

The purpose of this chapter is to overview the sport mood model and mood research conducted in disability sport. Researchers in disability sport have examined mood in a limited fashion, with an overreliance on the Profile of Mood States (POMS) scale, which measures vigor, confusion, depressed mood, anger, fatigue, and tension. A clear limitation of the POMS scale is the underrepresentation of positive mood states that athletes experience. Many of the researchers in disability sport have asked modest questions, such as do athletes with acquired versus congenital disabilities have more positive mood states? Other researchers have used the positive and negative affective schedule and have been able to offer a more well-rounded commentary on various positive and negative affective states and how they are related to other cognitions and sport performance. The chapter concludes with the recommendation that researchers use models of emotion and mood such as the 12-point affect circumplex (12-PAC) model and address how core affect can be assessed to reflect mood or emotion.

It takes into account, first, the continued presence of international donor governments and aid agencies in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future, despite the scheduled allied troop withdrawal. It then considers what various approaches to Afghanistan's future central government might mean for the country's women and for their social status and access to resources and opportunities. The chapter further analyzes the implications for women's rights of negotiating with the Taliban and of conceptualizing Afghanistan as a coherent nation-state. The final section explores possible new ground for transnational collaboration between Western and Afghan feminist activists and theorists in light of the checkered history and structural power inequities that have hampered mutual understanding and plagued collaborations in the past.

Despite India’s three decades of economic liberalization, access to quality education, well-paying jobs, and high standards of living align with prior class and caste advantages, leaving many poor and working-class people stuck in place and obligated to seek handouts from the rich. The study draws on ten years of ethnographic fieldwork at three private golf clubs in Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley, to explore the ties of dependence wealthy club members generate with the poor lower-caste golf caddies who carry their bags, and in a manner that reproduces their positions of privilege and authority. The caddies are not employees, and yet neither do they have complete control over their rates and schedules. Making $3–5 for a five- or six-hour round, caddies deploy acts servility and deference to yield additional money for healthcare, children’s school fees, and other household expenses. While a rare few caddies win sufficient support to put them and their families on a path of social mobility, most struggle to make ends meet, living in less-than-secure housing, going without food in some cases, and sending their children to low-quality schools that all but guarantee they will take up similar work as their fathers. The necessity but ultimate limitation of such relationships between the rich and poor underscores the failure of India’s development strategy, which favors private over public interests, and has yet to establish well-funded healthcare, education, and basic social services that would improve chances of social mobility and independence among the poor.

Chapter 9b discusses carcinoma of the vulva, which is primarily a surgical disease best treated by wide surgical resection, radical vulvectomy, and inguinal lymph node dissection based on presenting stage. Rarely, locally advanced primary disease may be presented for primary radiotherapy treatment. Postoperative radiotherapy is recommended for tumours invading >7 mm in a vertical direction. The first station regional lymph nodes in the inguinal region are best treated by radical surgical dissection, but fixed inoperable lymph nodes may benefit from primary radiotherapy which may be followed where appropriate by surgery if there is a residual mass. Postoperative radiotherapy should be considered for women having more than one node involved with metastatic tumour at surgery. This must be balanced against the increased risk of lymphoedema where both surgery and radiotherapy are delivered to the groins. Chemoradiation using cisplatin or 5-FU/mitomycin C-based schedules has been reported but no randomized comparison with radiotherapy alone has been undertaken; whilst high response rates are seen there is a considerable increase in acute toxicity.

Decompression illness comprises decompression sickness resulting from tissue inert gas super-saturation and pulmonary barotraumas due to alveolar or airway over-distension. Gas bubbles can cause vascular obstruction or tissue compression, resulting in tissue ischaemia and oedema. Interactions between the blood–gas interface and the endothelium will result in further tissue damage, and trigger an inflammatory cascade with capillary leakage and haemoconcentration. Decompression illness may mimic any other emergency pathology and any emergency coinciding with decompression is ‘due to’ decompression. Pulmonary barotrauma-induced arterial gas embolism and decompression sickness can be discriminated according to the onset of symptoms, with gas embolism predominantly developing within a few minutes after or even during decompression. Specific treatment consists of hyperbaric oxygen treatment, using several empirically-derived hyperbaric oxygen treatment schedules. Currently, there is no recognized pharmacological treatment, but fluid resuscitation is useful to counteract haemoconcentration and dehydration. Early treatment initiation is mandatory, and certain technical issues must be considered for the management of critically-ill patients in a hyperbaric chamber.

New antiplatelet agents and oral anticoagulants have been recently delivered, and their role in patients scheduled for heart surgery is an additional important issue.
