This dissertation focuses on the use of subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) in multimode fibers, utilizing carrier frequencies above what is generally utilized for multimode fiber transmission, to achieve high bit rates. In the high frequency region (i.e., frequencies larger than the intermodal bandwidth), the magnitude response of multimode fiber does not decrease monotonically as a function of the frequency but is shown to become relatively flat (but with several deep nulls) with an amplitude below that at DC. The statistical properties of this frequency response at high frequencies are analyzed.

It has recently been discovered that some, if not all, classical novae emit GeV gamma-rays during outburst, but the mechanisms involved in the production ofgamma-rays are still not well understood. We present here a comprehensive multiwavelength data set-from radio to X-rays-for the most gamma-ray-luminous classical nova to date, V1324 Sco. Using this data set, we show that V1324 Sco is a canonical dusty Fe II-type nova, with a maximum ejecta velocity of 2600 km s(-1) and an ejecta mass of a few x 10(-5) M-circle dot. This work examines the chemical and physical effects of a material treatment process on the biopolymers PEEK, POM-h, POM-c, PTFE and UHMWPE. The polymers are analyzed physically and chemically using atomic force microscopy, profilometry, scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, contact angle measurement, FT infra-red spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. PEEK is found to be the most suitable polymer and FT Infra-red spectroscopy an informative analytic tool.
