When the American Studies Association chose “Boundaries of American Culture” as the theme and San Diego as the site of its 1985 biennial convention, it made a particularly appropriate match between theme and site. Seen from my hotel balcony in a hazy autumnal glow, San Diego appeared a boundary city in at least three senses of relevance to the Association's work. First, lying at the border of the United States and Mexico, it hinted at the rich possibilities available to an American Studies willing to reach imaginatively beyond national boundaries, both north and south, toward a genuinely pan-American studies. Second, as a three-block walk to the beach from the convention hotel amply confirmed, San Diego borders what several commentators have called “the Mediterranean of the future”–a major arena of the globe too long and too much neglected by most Americans and Americanists. It was stimulating to welcome to the convention distinguished visitors from a dozen Asian and South Pacific countries, and more than a few speakers expressed the hope that such interaction would significantly further the comparativist and internationalist perspectives that they believed increasingly incumbent upon a nonparochial American Studies. Certainly the heartening presence in San Diego of both long-time and new colleagues from Europe, Canada, Latin America, Asia, and the South Pacific reflected a slowly but steadily growing impulse in the Association, a concrete dramatization of the premise that ideas and values, not to mention trade and power, do not stop at a nation's borders, although they may be often slowed down or even transformed at those borders.

This manuscript is a follow up to a panel presentation on “Vocal Fold Paresis & Paralysis: Controversies in Evaluation & Management,” which was held during the 2011 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in San Diego, California. In addition to me, the other members of the panel included Sarah L. Schneider, MS, CCC-SLP, Director, Speech-Language Pathology Service, UCSF Voice and Swallowing Center; Nelson Roy, PhD, Professor, Speech & Language Pathology, Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, University of Utah; and Marshall Smith, MD, Professor of Otolaryngology, Department of Surgery, University of Utah. During the panel, I was tasked with presenting the reasons for controversies in the diagnosis and management of vocal fold paralysis. In this manuscript, I will summarize my portion of that presentation and will provide additional information on management options for unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) from the perspective of a laryngologist.

The electron microscope is essential for resolving complex biological structures, such as mitochondria, which are too small to be viewed in detail with the light microscope. In contrast to a conventional instrument, the High-Voltage Electron Microscope (HVEM) located at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) can obtain images from relatively thick specimens that contain substantial three-dimensional structure. Though a single image acquired with the HVEM represents a projection through the specimen, tomographic methods can be applied to a set of images acquired from different orientations to derive a three-dimensional representation of its biological structure. Tomography requires extensive computation and considerable processing time on conventional workstations in order to reconstruct the typically large HVEM volumes from the tilt series. In order to expedite tomographic processing, we have implemented both the commonly used singleaxis tilt, R-weighted backprojection algorithm and two iterative reconstruction methods, algebraic reconstruction (ART) and simultaneous iterative reconstruction (SIRT) on the massively parallel Intel Paragon at the San Diego Supercompter Center.

KDD made history in 2020. It was planned to be held in the San Diego Convention Center in an environment that would attract a large number of participants, companies to an attractive location. The program planners also made a concerted effort to broaden the intellectual scope of the forum as well as participation by diverse communities. In particular, the conference planned for offering complimentary full-time daycare to enable participation by women and parents with young children. The emergence of COVID-19 disease in March, however, caused considerable uncertainty leading to a final determination for a first-ever entirely virtual conference. This shift was dramatic at multiple levels since KDD is more than a meeting of presenters and their audience. It is also a place for demonstrations, chance encounters and a very engaging floor exhibition with its own ongoing events. Without exhibitors, their sponsors, and missing attendees, KDD won't be KDD. And it will also have a significant financial liability to the conference for the event contracts already in place. With significant cooperation from ACM and support from SIGKDD Executive Committee the team not only avoided financial impact but emerged with a net positive financial outcome even after reducing the registration fees by over 80%.

Abstract Nine commercial plant protectants were tested for efficacy against feeding by adult Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica Newman). Treatments included an endotoxin from a bacterium [Bacillus thuringiensis (Berl.) var. san diego]; microencapsulated pyrethrum extracted from pyrethrum [Tanacetum cinnerariifolium (Trev.) Schultz-Bip.], two extracts from neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss); an extract from cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum Longum Group); an extract from garlic (Allium sativum L.); rotenone extracted from galedupa (Derris trifoliata Lour.) and barbasco [Lonchocarpus sericeus (Poiret) Kunth] or timbo (L. nicou Aublet D.C.); carbaryl (1-napthyl methylcarbamate); and the pyrethroid, fenpropathrin. Experimental plots were located at the Horticulture Field Laboratory (HFL), Raleigh, and the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center (MHCREC), Fletcher, NC. Himalayan birches [Betula utilis var. jacquemontii (Spach) Winkl.] were used as host plants. Treatments were applied twice, 2 weeks apart. Five weeks after initial application, trees treated with fenpropathrin averaged 2% defoliation vs. 40% defoliation for the control trees at HFL; and 3% defoliation vs. 100% defoliation for the control trees at MHCREC. Rotenone treatments averaged 10% defoliation at HFL and 92% defoliation at MHCREC. The following treatments were not significantly different from the control at week 5 at either location: garlic extract, neem extracts, cayenne pepper extract, microencapsulated pyrethrum, encapsulated bacterial endotoxin, and carbaryl.

In the decades following the Second World War, novel sound technologies and the proliferation of ethnomusicological field recordings ignited curiosity and experimentation among many musicians; these cultural phenomena also sparked a re-examination of conventional Euro-American musical sound sources. Classically trained instrumentalists and singers – particularly those associated with the ‘experimental tradition’ – cultivated intentionally idiosyncratic musical practices and widened their range of sonic possibility; this cultural zeitgeist included a heightened interest in so-called extended vocal techniques. In this article, I examine the research and creative output of the Extended Vocal Techniques Ensemble (EVTE) of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Drawing from published literature, interviews and archival sources to write this account of the EVTE’s multifaceted work, I contextualize the group’s activities within UCSD’s interdisciplinary emphasis as well as in the broader social–historical discourses of ‘extended vocal techniques’. Furthermore, I address the implications of their story within the broader politics of vocal aesthetics and pedagogy in Euro-American classical music contexts. By unearthing the EVTE’s interdisciplinary vision for vocal study, I hope to not only spark interest in this ensemble’s contributions, but also to revive (and build upon) their vision of a radically reimagined vocal artistry and study in academic music and beyond.

Background: Wounds are a major source of morbidity and sometimes, mortality and there are several ways to treat them. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is one way, and this involves the use of a suction device to aspirate and remove fluids, debris, and infectious materials from the wound bed to promote the formation of granulation tissue and wound healing. Another way is with the use of conventional wound dressings. Aims and Objectives: The aim was to compare NPWT and conventional wound dressings for the poor in a rural setting. Materials and Methods: Sixty consecutive cases clinically presenting with wounds between March 2018 and August 2019 were examined and divided into NPWT or conventional wound dressing groups. Outcome was measured by recording wound scores on day 7 or thereafter. Cases and controls were studied from admission until complete healing. Outcome and complications of NPWT and conventional wound dressings were noted. Results were tabulated in MS excel and evaluated using Graphpad Prism 9 software (San Diego, CA, USA). Results: Many patients (33.33%) were in the 5th and 6th decades of life and most (77%) were male. Many wounds were located on the foot (40%). Those patients younger than 40 years of age with a wound <10 days old had a better median wound score in both the groups. The majority of wounds (43.33%) were traumatic. Wound healing was better in non-diabetics and non-smokers. There was a considerable reduction in the organism load in the NPWT group (P=0.0078). Complications were minor. The NPWT group had a significantly shorter mean hospital stay (P=0.0001). Conclusion: NPWT enhanced granulation tissue formation leading to earlier wound healing and faster recovery compared to conventional wound dressings.

✓ Elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is a major factor associated with incidences of morbidity and mortality in patients with neurological disorders. The use of conventional methods for ICP monitoring is currently limited to patients with severe neurological conditions because of the methods' invasive nature. The authors have developed an ultrasonic device capable of monitoring ICP waveforms noninvasively by using a pulsed phase lock loop (PPLL) technique. The PPLL device records skull movement (several meters) associated with ICP pulsations. The purpose of this study was to correlate PPLL waveforms with invasively measured ICP waveforms in patients at the University of California San Diego Medical Center (13 patients). A linear regression analysis revealed a high correlation between PPLL waveforms and invasively measured ICP waveforms during the same time domain (r2 = 0.88). A coherence function analysis, which provides the fractional portion of the mean square value at the output that is contributed by the input at a certain frequency, showed medium to high correlations (r2 = 0.50–0.90) between PPLL waveforms and invasively measured ICP waveforms at each harmonic wave components. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation (r2 = 0.680, p < 0.01) in the harmonic distortion ratio (an index representing how much a given waveform is distorted from a pure sine wave) between PPLL waveforms and invasively measured ICP waveforms. In conclusion, PPLL technology enables the noninvasive evaluation of ICP dynamics in clinical settings.

Background: Cervical cancer (Ca Cx) the 4th common cancer has a high mortality rate. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is chiefly responsible for a long latent period to progress from preinvasive to invasive Ca Cx. So it can be prevented by screening procedures such as visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), conventional cervical PAP smear (CP), liquid-based cytology (LBC), and high-risk (HPV-hr) detection along with vaccination. Aims and Objectives: The study aims to determine the socio-demographic profile of Ca Cx and the most appropriate cost-effective community screening method. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study with 80 symptomatic women of reproductive and peri/postmenopausal age groups attending the Gynecology Department who underwent VIA, CP, and LBC and thereby detected positive along with screened negative but clinically suspicious women were tested for HPV-hr detection. Results were tabulated into an Excel sheet and screening methods were compared using Chi-square test, gold standard being cervical histopathology (P<0.5 significant). Statistical software used - Graphpad Prism 9 (San Diego, CA). Results: The mean age was 43.3 years. Multiparity and early marriage were seen in 80% and 45% respectively. Inflammatory lesions were best diagnosed by CP but epithelial cell abnormality and more satisfactory smears by LBC (P<0.05). Sensitivity was highest (93.75%) in VIA, positive predictive value, and specificity in CP (91.66%, 75%). negative predictive value was highest in VIA and HPV-hr DNA (50%). Conclusion: VIA with CP/LBC is an economically viable and effective screening method for Ca Cx in developing countries along with HPV vaccination.

The third decade of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists' (AMSS)existence witnessed the collective effort by some of its members to identify majorareas for inclusion in its research agenda. Besides taking stock of past performance, the main determinants included those recent events in the ummah whichhave affected it as a whole and the ensuing problems calling for immediateattention.Following established tradition, the AMSS and one of its sister professionalorganizations, the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers (AMSE),convened their conferences at the same time and place. This year's banquet speaker was H.R.H. Crown Prince Hasan bin Talalof Jordan, whose address was delivered in his absence by Mohammad A.Hamadan, former Minister of Education of Jordan. The main thrust of PrinceHasan's address was the need for cooperation among the ummah's varioussegments in the service of professional and human resource development. TheIsma'il and Lamya al Fariiqi Memorial Lecture was given by Zafar I. Ansari,Director General, Islamic Research Center, Islamabad, Pakistan. The AMSEkeynote speaker was Ali Nayfeh, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,Blacksburg, VA. Nayfeh suggested practical ways of fostering scientificand technological advancement in the ummah through intra-ummah as well asinternational collaboration. The main program consisted of seventeen thematic panels organized intoeleven sessions. The opening session was chaired by Sayyid M. Syeed, GeneralSecretary of the AMSS. It consisted of the welcome speeches of S. Background: Surgical management to improve hip joint morphology in immature patients with acetabular dysplasia includes Pemberton, Dega, San Diego, and Salter acetabular osteotomies. This study evaluates acetabular morphology between these osteotomies using patient-specific 3-D printing technology. Methods: Preoperative computed tomography scans (CTs) from patients with acetabular dysplasia were rendered into 3-D printable formats. Quadruplicate pelvis models for each patient received Pemberton, Dega, San Diego, and Salter osteotomies. CTs were obtained of each model before and after osteotomy. Acetabular volume and regional coverage angles were computed and compared before and after each osteotomy. Results: Fourteen hips (14 patients) were included; 1 male, 13 female; age 5.4±1.3 years (3.9-7.5 years). Acetabular volume decreased following each osteotomy (Pemberton by 14%, Dega by 19%, San Diego by 19%, and Salter by 6%), with smaller volume reduction for Salter than the others (p<0.05). Volume change was similar between Pemberton, Dega, and San Diego (p=0.32). Pemberton increased coverage in Superior and Anterior regions, Dega increased coverage in Superior, Superior-Anterior, and Anterior regions, San Diego increased coverage in Posterior, Superior-Posterior, and Superior regions, and Salter increased coverage in Superior region (p<0.05). Conclusions: Acetabular volume changes found in this study support the convention that redirectional osteotomies such as Salter are more volume neutral than incomplete osteotomies such as Pemberton, Dega, and San Diego. However, even the Salter decreased acetabular volume. This study re-demonstrated that each osteotomy studied changes acetabular coverage in different regions. Based on this, a surgeon’s osteotomy decision should be based on the dysplastic acetabulum morphology.

ABSTRACT The California Department of Fish and Game Office of Spill Prevention and Response (CA OSPR) is utilizing oil-spill fate and transport modeling to develop the time and spatial scales, and equipment needs, for a formal Dispersed Oil Monitoring Plan (DOMP). When fully implemented, the DOMP will aid in documenting hydrocarbon concentrations in the water column, potentially exposed organisms (zooplankton), and the impacts of entrained oil and dissolved hydrocarbons with and without dispersant applications. Fluorescein dye studies off San Diego, California (USA) have been completed to test the operational framework for repeated sampling of dispersed oil plumes as outlined in the DOMP, to allow evaluation of high-frequency radar (HP-Radar) for providing surface current input data to oil spill models, and to provide verification of model-predicted movement of subsurface oil (dye) by comparison with drogue movement and measured dye concentrations over three dimensions and time. Aerial photodocumentation, subsurface drogues, dye transport, and HF-Radar were used to measure near-surface current fields at varying depths. High-resolution subsurface dye-plume structure was mapped using an in situ GPS-coupled towed fluorometer equipped with pressure sensors to provide dye concentration data as a function of time, position, and depth. In addition, data from the more traditional Special Monitoring of Applied Response Technology (SMART) protocols utilized by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) were compared with the in situ towed-fluorometer measurements, and conventional CTD data were collected to determine the mixed layer depth, an important variable in monitoring dispersion of oil in the water column. As a result of these efforts, significant progress has been made on developing and testing sampling protocols for the DOMP, and nearly continuous and synoptic data have been obtained from seven cruises conducted over a 12-month period. These data sets (available on-line through the Coastal Response Research Center (CRRC) website: http://www.crrc.unh.edu/) are being analyzed and integrated to support oil spill model development and verification with direct applicability to spill response decision making, net environmental benefit analysis, natural resource damage assessments, and educating the spill community and public.

Abstract Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a prevalent malignant cancer worldwide. Conventional treatments for this type of cancer involve surgical resection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. However, in cases where the tumor recurs or metastasizes distantly, rendering surgical resection or radiation therapy impractical, the only viable option is the utilization of targeted drugs in conjunction with chemotherapy. Despite such interventions, the prognosis remains grim. Hence, the identification of genetic characteristics or biomarkers associated with easy metastasis or recurrence in the early stages of the tumor has become imperative for effective head and neck cancer treatment. The objective of this study is to analyze tumor specimens from the primary site and lymph node metastasis post-surgical resection in HNSCC patients. We employed the GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler (DSP) for imaging-based digitized gene expression analysis. The DSP provides gene expression information at specific locations we selected, such as the primary tumor center core, primary tumor invasion borders, and lymph node metastasis specimens. The GeoMx DSP spatial analysis tool illustrates the cancer transcriptome atlas (CTA), encompassing the expression of 1825 genes related to cancer and immunity from the primary site to the metastatic site. We identified tissue-specific EMT gene expression patterns in paired tumor regions of interest (ROIs). ITGB1 emerged as the most significant co-expression marker in the primary outer tumor and metastatic tumor. Distinct EMT signature genes expressed in the HNSCC primary site and lymph node metastatic site were also discovered. Additionally, we conducted CTA profiling in correlated stroma ROIs. Through myeloid activity analysis in HNSCC paired samples, we identified distinct myeloid activation signatures in primary and metastatic site stroma cells. These results will provide crucial insights into head and neck cancer treatment strategies based on different tumor site characteristics. Citation Format: Chih-Hung Chung, Muh-Hwa Yang. Abstract This article summarizes 4 years of data from San Diego Unified School District's Speech Improvement Class model for students with mild articulation needs. The district made a gradual shift from special education to general education. Data demonstrate that most students complete the class in 17-20 treatment hours. Three factors have been fundamental to the success of this program: the Articulation Resource Center, ongoing professional development, and a well-defined set of procedures. Challenges and concerns are also discussed. Overall, speech-language pathologists in San Diego Unified are implementing this class effectively and have branched out into other response to intervention supports.

The intermediate high-voltage electron microscope (IVEM) located at the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research at San Diego (NCMIR) can image relatively thick specimens that contain substantial three-dimensional (3-D) structure. Electron tomography is an important tool used at NCMIR for deriving 3-D cellular and subcellular structure from IVEM images. Reconstruction algorithms commonly used in electron tomography include weighted back projection, and iterative algebraic reconstruction techniques such as ART and SIRT. Improvements in reconstruction quality are possible using the iterative algorithms. Because these algorithms are computationally intensive, we have ported them to massively parallel computers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, reducing the computation time over that required with workstation level machines. The quality of tomographic data for the 3-D reconstruction of biological structures is also being enhanced by NCMIR projects to improve the microscope. We have designed and constructed special electron optics and microscope control systems for the JEOL 4000EX.

Abstract One of the main drivers for the drastic reduction in survival rates caused by metastatic breast cancer is attributed to Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT). During embryonic development and wound healing, EMT plays a vital role and during cancer pathogenesis, cancer cells reactivate this program to gain plasticity, migration, and invasion promoting metastasis. In addition, EMT also plays a crucial role in generating a subpopulation of highly resilient tumor cells known as cancer stem cells (CSCs). Moreover, following conventional treatment, residual tumor cells that remain after treatment tend to exhibit CSC properties. EMT-induced cancer stem cells exhibit heightened plasticity and stemness, significantly fueling the metastatic spread of cancer and enhancing the endurance and adaptability throughout the process of metastasis. Thus, understanding the molecular intricacies governing stem cell properties holds immense potential for developing targeted therapies to target metastasis and the development of resistance to treatments. To further elucidate EMT-induced cancer stem cell generation, our lab has demonstrated that the Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1), an important G2/M regulator, plays an important role in the generation of CSCs through Forkhead box protein C2 (FOXC2). Most importantly, we have shown that the FOXC2 transcription factor, known to be crucial in embryonic development, now has emerging roles in metastatic cancer progression. FOXC2 is positioned at the center of the complex network of signal transduction pathways and functions downstream of most EMT-inducing transcription factors. FOXC2 is necessary for the acquisition and maintenance of stem cell property. In addition, we found that phosphorylation of FOXC2 by PLK1 stabilizes, and inhibition of PLK1 causes a decrease in FOXC2 and stemness in cancer cells. This led us to hypothesize that EMT-induced CSC generation is driven by the PLK1-FOXC2 axis. By expressing phosphomimetic and non-phosphorylatable FOXC2 mutants in breast cancer cell lines, we show that PLK1 phosphorylation is necessary for gaining stemness and an increase in symmetric self-renewal type of stem cell division. Evidence will be presented as to how we are targeting the PLK1-FOXC2 axis to make tumors sensitive to standard-of-care treatments. Abstract Abstract 3099 Background: The development of a risk-stratification model that relies on molecular cytogenetic markers to assess disease aggressiveness and provide therapeutic guidance would be beneficial for the management of patients with multiple myeloma (MM). High-risk cytogenetic abnormalities, including deletion 17p (del17p), are known to confer a poor prognosis. Intensified consolidation with high-dose therapy (HDT) and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) following induction therapy has been proposed as the preferred initial treatment for high-risk MM, such as del17p. With this background, we report the impact of del17p on the timing and outcome of transplant in patients with MM. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 226 patients with MM who underwent HDT/ASCT at the University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center between 1/2000 and 7/2011. Conventional cytogenetic analyses were utilized for all patients either at diagnosis or at relapse, but prior to ASCT. Fluorescence in situ hybridization was also assessed when available. The primary objective was to evaluate the impact of del17p, a known high-risk chromosomal abnormality, on the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) after ASCT, compared with patients without chromosomal abnormalities. A secondary objective was to assess the OS and PFS for patients with del17p who received ASCT within a year of diagnosis, compared with those who underwent ASCT more than 12 months from diagnosis. Results: In 226 patients with conventional cytogenetic data prior to ASCT, chromosomal abnormalities were noted in 82 (36%) patients. Of these, 21 (25%) patients harbored a del17p abnormality. Table 1 shows the patient characteristics and ASCT outcomes. Prior to undergoing ASCT, 4 (19%)patients with del17p achieved a complete remission (CR) or stringent complete remission (sCR), and 6 (29%) achieved a CR or sCR after ASCT. In patients without chromosomal abnormalities, 19 (13%) achieved CR or sCR prior to ASCT, and 45 (31%) achieved it after ASCT. Median follow-up of surviving patients was 47 months (range 5–283). Median PFS after ASCT in patients with del17p and normal cytogenetics were 8.3 months (95%CI: 4.6-N/A) and 33 months (95%CI: 21.7–61.8), respectively (HR 2.15, 95%CI: 1.19–3.89; p=0.011) (Figure 1). Median OS after ASCT in patients with del17p and normal cytogenetics were 47.5 months (95%CI: 19.9-N/A) and 68 months (95%CI 51.1-N/A), respectively (HR: 2.27, 95%CI 1.15–4.48; p=0.018) (Figure 2). Median PFS in patients with del17p who received an ASCT after 12 months and within 12 months from diagnosis was 6.13 months (95%CI: 2.7-NA) and 22.6 months (95%CI: 5.4-NA), respectively (HR=1.22, 95%CI 0.40–3.82; p=0.71). Median OS in del17p patients who received an ASCT after 12 months and within 12 months from diagnosis was 65.6 months (95%CI: 19.3-NA) and 47.5 months (95%CI: 19.9-NA), respectively (HR=0.97, 95%CI 0.26–3.62; p=0.96). Conclusions: In this single center study with long follow up, we demonstrate that a del17p abnormality in MM confers a shorter PFS and OS after ASCT. Furthermore, the use of HDT/ASCT as part of the upfront treatment plan within 12 months of diagnosis does not significantly affect the outcome in patients with a del17p abnormality. Further studies are required to better define a risk-stratified treatment plan for this subset of high-risk multiple myeloma. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

This article presents results of a first-hand investigation that took a year of ethnographic work (methods of observation and interviews) during 2016–2017, with the post-structural theoretical framework of Gilles Deleuze, on the United States–Mexico border, in the San Diego-Tijuana corridor. The Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies of the University of California San Diego, PREVENCASA A. C., and Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosi supported this research. In this research, statistical data, observations, and synthesis of in-depth interviews were utilized about those defined as the ‘dispossessed’: users of hard drugs, and/or in homelessness conditions of discrimination in a highly contrasting border such as that of the United States and Mexico. Among the main results are the relations between mental and embodiment limits, necropolitics and territory, as well as the approach of post-structural political discourses about the body and mind that allow us to understand the subjectivities in question, proposing two types of homelessness.

When comics fandom emerged as a distinct media-oriented community in the 1960s, one of the things it brought with it from science-fiction fandoms was the convention. Buoyed by the synergistic relationship between Hollywood and the San Diego Comic-Con and the growing prominence of ‘geek’ culture, comic conventions, comic art festivals and related media fandom events across North America have enjoyed enhanced prestige, attention and attendance over the last fifteen to twenty years. But what kind of event are these ‘con events’? This article builds on a cultural mapping survey of convention organizers. The survey’s goal was to suggest something of the scope and diversity of the contemporary sector. Behind this variation, we define the con event as an organizational and cultural form that is (1) oriented to media, (2) audience-facing and (3) concerned with circulation.
