Studies using the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model commonly have a heterogeneous focus concerning the variables they investigate—selective job demands and resources as well as burnout and work engagement. The present study applies the rationale of the JD-R model to expand the relevant outcomes of job demands and job resources by linking the JD-R model to the logic of a generic health development framework predicting more broadly positive and negative health. The resulting JD-R health model was operationalized and tested with a generalizable set of job characteristics and positive and negative health outcomes among a heterogeneous sample of 2,159 employees. Applying a theory-driven and a data-driven approach, measures which were generally relevant for all employees were selected. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that the model fitted the data. Multiple group analyses indicated invariance across six organizations, gender, job positions, and three times of measurement. Initial evidence was found for the validity of an expanded JD-R health model. Thereby this study contributes to the current research on job characteristics and health by combining the core idea of the JD-R model with the broader concepts of salutogenic and pathogenic health development processes as well as both positive and negative health outcomes.

Based on the well-established job demands-resources (JD-R) framework, in our study we introduce the novel study demands-resources (SD-R) framework. The SD-R framework allows the study of salutogenic and pathogenic effects of university settings on students’ health and well-being. Using a large sample of university students (n = 5660), our aim was to translate and validate the JD-R’s essential assumptions within the university context, and thus establish the SD-R framework. We performed structural equation modelling to examine these essential assumptions. As assumed, we found that study demands—the “bad things” at university—predict student burnout (β = 0.50), whereas study resources—the “good things” at university—predict student engagement (β = 0.70) as well as burnout (β = −0.35). Also, in line with the SD-R’s assumptions, student burnout predicts life satisfaction negatively (β = −0.34), whereas student engagement predicts life satisfaction positively (β = 0.29). Hence, we were able to introduce the novel SD-R framework and validate its core assumptions. The SD-R framework serves as an excellent theoretical basis to examine both the salutogenic and pathogenic effects of the study context on students’ health and well-being. However, the framework needs further longitudinal and meta-analytical verification in accordance with the research on the JD-R framework.

Background: The implementation of complex healthcare programmes can be challenging for respective service providers (SPs) in implementation settings. A strong work-related sense of coherence (Work-SoC) promotes creation of job resources and potentially facilitates coping with demands that may arise during implementation. In this study, we analyse how SPs’ Work-SoC is influenced by job resources and demands during programme implementation and identify relevant implementation strategies to ensure a salutogenic implementation process. Methods: Qualitative data were collected during the implementation of a new complex psycho-oncological care programme called isPO. Four focus groups and four interviews were conducted with SPs. All were audiotaped, transcribed and content analysis was applied, whilst ensuring inter- and intra-rater reliability. Results: Each Work-SoC component was influenced by specific job resources and demands. In particular, comprehensibility and manageability interacted. Manageability affected assessment of the programme’s feasibility. High meaningfulness positively affected the programme’s acceptance and overall assessment among SPs. Furthermore, it buffered low manageability and was strongly associated with project identification. Conclusion: We found that Work-SoC could be used to assess SPs’ work environment, and therefore programme feasibility. It may be worthwhile to use Work-SoC as an implementation outcome or as an indicator for possible programmes.

Introduction: The experience of professional demands in the case of teachers is a problem that goes beyond the in-dividual challenges of the subject. None of us would like to be taught by someone constantly tired. On the other hand, teachers play an essential role in passing on knowledge and educating the youngest generations, so the future of each citizen indirectly depends on them. Therefore, the broadly understood well-being of this professional group is a socially and thus scientifically significant problem. One of the resources that can be a salutogenic factor in the face of the burdens that teachers ex¬perience is resilience – a relatively constant personality trait. According to the Job De¬mands-Resources Theory (JD-R, Bakker, Demerouti, 2017) and the Conservation of Resources Theory (COR, Hobfoll, 2006) resilience may not only reduce the adverse effects of high professional demands but also promote personal development. Method: The research aimed to determine the moderating role of resilience between the job demands and chronic fatigue. The study was longitudinal, with a five-month break between subsequent measurements. One hundred sixty-seven teachers participated (some data, average age, gender proportions). I collected the research material using the diagnostic survey method, which included the following research instruments: Resilience Measurement Scale (SPP-25), Checklist Individual Stenght (CIS20R) and selected scales from the Teacher Stress Inventory (TSI). Results: In the study sample, only two dimensions of resilience (understood as a relatively constant property of the individual) moderated the relationship between work-related stressors and the manifestations of chronic teacher fatigue. Conclusions: The results of the research suggest the need to develop good practices in the field of shaping resilience and, consequently, the sense of well-being of teachers and the effectiveness and efficiency of teaching related to it.

The study 'Examination of productivity, sustainable working ability and level of engagement in the work of the company' shows the value of salutogenetic productivity, sustainable working ability and degree of involvement of employees in work of company ― 'Sarajevo Tobacco Factory'. Research conducted during the period 2011/2012 includes a sample of 270 employees, male and female working age population in manufacturing and out of the production processes work, aged 20 to 65 years, with different kinds of education and occupation. The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study, on a voluntary basis, using a standardized, anonymous Questionnaire to determine the index of human labor (Human Work Index, HWI). Established a very good value of salutogenetic productivity, interest in work, cooperation and ability to work, didn't show significant differences according to process of labor and occupation, except in dimensions of interest to work of managers and cooperation with managers, who are in category of excellent. Employees with primary level of education and invalids are perceived mediocre values of salutogenetic productivity, labor skills and cooperation, and dimension of interest in category of a very good value. Analysis of personal productivity in context of dimension of work ability and interest for work, shows that sustainable working ability have 204 (76%) employees and unsustainable 44 (16%) employees, of whom 17 (6%) perceived exposure to increased demands of job, and 27 (10%) possibility of alienation at work. Research engagement at work within the context of dimension for work and cooperation, shows that 123 (46%) of employees stated engagement in working for the Company and mutual trust with colleagues, while reduced expectations of the labor organizations have 82 (30%) employees. Deficit of importance and effect of incentive with job subjectively perceived 20 (7%) of employees, while the deficit of integration into working environment with increased possibility of leaving their jobs in next 5 years was found in 45 (17%) of employees.

Introduction: A variety of empirical studies have shown the negative effects of unemployment on health. A research gap exists regarding salutogenic factors and successful coping strategies to master involuntary job loss and unemployment with the least damage to health. Hence, this study aims at generating a deeper understanding of coping with unemployment and maintaining health.Design and Methods: We conducted problem-centered guideline interviews with 21 unemployed people. For the analysis of the interviews, we followed the qualitative content analysis. Results: The study identified that five themes were particularly relevant in coping with unemployment: (1) the financial situation, (2) social support and psychosocial strains due family obligations, (3) health problems, (4) time structure and (5) coping strategies. The respondents expressed their financial situation as a major strain in unemployment. They emphasized the importance of social support by their families, but reported also stressful psychosocial demands due their family members. Furhter, our respondents mentioned their health problems as a barrier for re-integration into the labour market. In connection with social role demands, a rudimentary time structure was reported by the participants The common reported coping strategy in unemployment is seeking for social support. Conclusions: In summary, our results show – besides health problems and a deteriorated financial situation in unemployment – the great importance of social support and time structure for maintaining mental health in unemployment. Consequently, health promotion approaches for the unemployed should especially target social support and time structure.

Orientation: Work-related sense of coherence (Work-SoC) is defined as the perceived comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness of an individual’s current work situation.Research purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate the factorial invariance and the construct validity of a scale that measures Work-SoC.Motivation for the study: It might be useful to specifically apply the concept of sense of coherence to the work context.Research design, approach and method: Statistical analysis was performed on crosssectional (n = 3412) and longitudinal (n = 1286) questionnaire data collected in eight medium to large Swiss companies from diverse economic sectors (four industrialproduction companies, one food-processing company, one public-administration service and two hospitals). The dataset therefore covers a broad range of different occupational groups.Main findings: Multiple-group analyses indicated that the scale’s factor structure remains invariant across different employee groups and across time. High values in job resources were related to high values in Work-SoC whereas high values in job demands were related to low values in Work-SoC. Furthermore, Work-SoC acted as a partial mediator between job resources and work engagement.Practical/managerial implications: It can be concluded that Work-SoC might serve as a practical screening instrument for assessing an employee’s perception of the potential health-promoting qualities of his or her current work situation.Contribution/value-add: The study advances both the salutogenic theory and the field of positive occupational health psychology by redefining sense of coherence as an interactional and context-specific construct that is useful for intervention research.

Orientation: Female academics in higher-education institutions face numerous challenges in the continuously changing landscape of South African higher education. Mergers, increasing job demands, ever-increasing class sizes and role conflict inherent in the female role contribute extensively to the manifestation of stress and burnout in this population group.Research purpose: This research was conducted from a salutogenic paradigm, seeking to find ways of avoiding the negative consequences of burnout and contributing towards the positive experience of work engagement for the female academic. The research also explored the effect of the individual academic’s sense of coherence (SOC) on her experience of burnout and work engagement.Research design, approach and method: The research was quantitative in nature. A psychometric instrument was sent to all the permanently employed female academics at Unisa and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), measuring their levels of burnout, work engagement and SOC. The completed questionnaires were statistically analysed.Main findings: The findings included average levels of burnout, with definite signs that the experience of burnout is on the increase. The cynicism sub-dimension of burnout showed increased levels, work engagement scores were just above average and SOC scores were low.Practical/managerial implications: This article offers a psychological interpretation of the variables in the target group. The article contributes towards the body of research studies conducted from a positive psychological paradigm and, specifically, on the female gender.Contribution/value-add: The main recommendations are that university management needs to take cognisance of the alarming symptoms of burnout present in the population under discussion. Strategies are recommended to address these and to nurture work engagement.

IntroductionIsolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments such as found at Antarctic, Arctic, and other remote research stations are considered space-analogs to study the long duration isolation aspects of operational space mission conditions.MethodsWe interviewed 24 sojourners that participated in different short/long duration missions in an Antarctic (Concordia, Halley VI, Rothera, Neumayer II) or non-Antarctic (e.g., MDRS, HI-SEAS) station or in polar treks, offering a unique insight based on first-hand information on the nature of demands by ICE-personnel at multiple levels of functioning. We conducted a qualitative thematic analysis to explore how sojourners were trained, prepared, how they experienced the ICE-impact in function of varieties in environment, provided trainings, station-culture, and type of mission.ResultsThe ICE-environment shapes the impact of organizational, interpersonal, and individual working- and living systems, thus influencing the ICE-sojourners' functioning. Moreover, more specific training for operating in these settings would be beneficial. The identified pillars such as sensory deprivation, sleep, fatigue, group dynamics, displacement of negative emotions, gender-issues along with coping strategies such as positivity, salutogenic effects, job dedication and collectivistic thinking confirm previous literature. However, in this work, we applied a systemic perspective, assembling the multiple levels of functioning in ICE-environments.DiscussionA systemic approach could serve as a guide to develop future preparatory ICE-training programs, including all the involved parties of the crew system (e.g., family, on-ground crew) with attention for the impact of organization- and station-related subcultures and the risk of unawareness about the impact of poor sleep, fatigue, and isolation on operational safety that may occur on location.

AbstractThis chapter presents models, measures, and intervention approaches that relate to the double nature of work and its salutogenic quality. Hereby, the view of Aaron Antonovsky is enhanced insofar that health-promoting, salutogenic job characteristics are not solely understood as mitigating the pathogenic effects of stressors at work but have a distinct effect on positive health outcomes. In the chapter, Antonovsky’s original model is first specified and simplified for the context of work. Next, Antonovsky’s line of thinking is related to frameworks researching job resources and demands. After a review of the prevalence of salutogenic measures in worksite health promotion, the point of making salutogenesis more visible in work-related research and practice is elaborated. This is illustrated with a practical example of a survey-feedback process promoting salutogenic work.
