The term living probabilistic safety assessment was defined soon after the initial probabilistic safety assessments were implemented. The objective of this article is to present the extended living probabilistic safety assessment and its applications considering realistic nuclear power plant models, including the low power and shutdown plant operating states. One of the key objectives is to compare the suitability of conventional and additional risk measures, core damage frequency and conditional core damage frequency, respectively. The methods are presented considering all states of the plant from the full power operation to the low power and shutdown states. The example models of the nuclear power plants and the results of the living probabilistic safety assessment of the plant operating states are discussed. The results show that the risk of low power and shutdown states is generally smaller than the risk of full power operation, but the low power and shutdown plant operating states differ significantly among each other regarding the risk level. The deficiency of living probabilistic safety assessment applied to the plant shutdown states is connected with significantly increased human effort for the analyses, with a significantly greater amount of results and with increased uncertainty of some parameters due to the larger dynamics of actions in the plant shutdown versus the full power operation states. The benefit of the living probabilistic safety assessment applied to the plant low power and shutdown states lays in consideration of all states and potential identification of risk significant states and directions for possible safety improvements.

This article presents an overview of current and potential applications of living technology to some urban problems. Living technology can be described as technology that exhibits the core features of living systems. These features can be useful to solve dynamic problems. In particular, urban problems concerning mobility, logistics, telecommunications, governance, safety, sustainability, and society and culture are presented, and solutions involving living technology are reviewed. A methodology for developing living technology is mentioned, and supraoptimal public transportation systems are used as a case study to illustrate the benefits of urban living technology. Finally, the usefulness of describing cities as living systems is discussed.

The worker, remotely located and unknown to the people she watches, offers a perspective that points out some of the strangeness of watching from a distance a living person being injured, struggling, or just needing human care and attention. As we move into more widespread use of eldercare technologies, it’s worth considering how surveillant and robotic technologies to support independent elder living could change our relationships with and sensitivity to older populations.

The problem domain of the research covers the consideration and analysis of the personal safety assurance of citizens of contemporary Kazakhstan society. The current work is aimed at revealing, studying and theoretical conceptualization of information on personal safety as an indicator of population living standards. To achieve the goal of the research the following common scientific methods were used: analysis and synthesis, methods of comparison, functional and logical analysis, and methods of applied researches. The work presents the retrospective analysis of the “personal safety” notion, systematizes the existing approaches to the investigation of the essence that allowed revealing its main components. The work considers personal safety as one of the basic needs of humans that affects the population living standards. Within this context, the existing methods of population living standards assessment considering the personal safety factors were analyzed. Basing on the considered methods and research results of the international organizations, the comparative analysis of indicators related to personal safety in Kazakhstan and OECD countries was conducted on different indexes. The conducted comparisons allowed providing some assessment of the personal safety state of Kazakhstan citizens. Also, using the method of the linear combination of particular indicators to the integrated indicator the authors have calculated the indicator of economic safety of the population for the Almaty region that covers the personal safety indicators. The authors show the advantages and disadvantages of the applied method and provide recommendations on its application at different levels. The conclusions of the research can be taken as a base for an in-depth study on measuring the indicators of population personal safety in the context of living standards assurance.

Autonomous vehicles start to be introduced on our roads and will soon become a reality. Although fatal traffic accidents will be significantly reduced, remaining fatal passenger car crashes should be taken into account to ensure the safety of users. The new highly adaptable interior designs, with totally different layouts from the current ones, may significantly impact occupant safety, especially child passenger safety. Analyzing how these new vehicles affect child safety is a challenge that needs to be addressed. The "living room" layout (face-to-face seating position) is one of the preferences of families traveling with children. Young children need further support and supervision so the possibility of rotating seats to be able to be in front of the small children is a valuable feature for parents. Therefore, new seating orientations away from the forward facing position should be taken into account to ensure children protection. The objective of this study is to evaluate child occupant safety in a "living room" seating position (a possible option in full autonomous vehicles) versus the current forward facing position. Virtual testing methodology was used to perform this study. The virtual PIPER child human body model (HBM) was used. This model is one of the only HBMs developed and validated from child PMHS data (Paediatric Post-Mortem Human Surrogate). The two configurations were defined according with the EuroNCAP child occupant protection test protocol. It was found that the "living room" layout presents worse results according to the child's head injury patterns than in forward facing position. In conclusion, attending to the new seating orientations away from the forward facing position, it is necessary to adapt the restraint systems; otherwise children could suffer potentially dangerous situations.

Abstract Concerns around assisted living (AL) quality have prompted the 2019 passage of the MN legislature, which provided funding for the development of an Assisted Living Report Card. We present results from the first two phases of this project. The first phase involved a national literature review of quality measures and technical advisory panels to understand the types of domains and indicators for AL quality that are measured. Nine quality domains were identified. The second phase focused on state-wide stakeholder engagement to determine priority rankings for nine AL quality domains and indicators identified. Quality of life, staff quality and resident safety were the top three domains across all stakeholder groups. The state will implement surveys of AL resident quality of life and family satisfaction as mandated by the legislature, but findings indicate that other aspects of quality such as staff-related measures and resident safety, are also important to address.

Building maintenance is crucial to prolong a building's lifespan. Conducting the maintenance work can be dangerous, especially if it involves high-rise areas such as walls and roofs. Most literature discusses safety aspects at the construction site, while the safety aspects of maintenance work, which occur after occupancy, received less attention. This paper discusses the potential of integrating safety aspects into the maintenance work of a living wall. Living wall system (LWS) is one of the green design aspects in which the wall is designed to allow for vegetation growth. Maintenance works of a living wall involve various risks especially working in high or difficult places. This paper reviews the maintenance process and techniques adapted for maintaining the living wall through literature. This paper presents the safety practices that have the potential to reduce the risks of conducting maintenance work on the living wall and its potential challenges. It is hoped that this paper raises further awareness that work safety in construction is not only enclosed within the construction site and its vicinity, but safety should also be considered post-occupation, especially when the design demands specific maintenance requirements such as a living wall. As a result of the cadaveric organ shortage, the number of centers performing living donor liver transplantation has increased. Living donor liver transplantation provides immediate organ availability and avoids the risk of life-threatening complications that occur with long waiting times for cadaveric organs; however, it puts a healthy person at risk for little personal gain. A standardized approach to donor evaluation ensures safety to potential donors. Careful medical (physical examination as well as laboratory and radiological evaluation) and psychological evaluation is imperative to reduce donor complications and ensure good outcomes in recipients. A social worker and psychiatrist assess for mental competency, provide emotional support, and can serve as independent donor advocates. Informed understanding and consent are crucial aspects of the evaluation and include ensuring that the donor understands all potential complications and is free of coercion. Safety of the donor must be the highest priority.

Health, good living level and the protection of economic and social interests of people are the basic attributes for the evaluation of the role of foodstuff. That is why the food policy of the SR and the EC is also subordinated to these attributes. General principles and claims concerning food safety are set in the decree of the European Parliament and the Commission (EC) No. 178/2002. Relevant claims of this key horizontal regulation are already in use since January the 1st 2005, and create the common basement for precautions concerning foodstuffs and feeds, and legally ensure the complex approach to the food safety including all the direct and indirect impacts on food safety, animal health and some environmental issues. The food safety is a public good in the SR as it is characterised by non-excludability from consumption and non-existence of rivalry in the consumption.

The paper introduces the concept of “green” standardization of living environment technologies and “green” innovative products to shape the most likely transition to a new nature-like technological paradigm, which will replace the existing energy-consuming equipment and technology paradigm leading to global ecological collapse in the future. “Green” standardization of the future is necessary to assess compliance and to examine safety and nature-likeness of the newest technologies being developed from among promising breakthrough technologies and to assess compliance of “innovative” products with the requirements of bio-positivity, comfort and safety.

While urbanisation has always been welcomed as a driver to economic amelioration, it has also been criticised for raising expectations and complicating the lives of urban residents. With urban development, wellbeing is often compromised as income disparity increases, quality of life decreases. Of late, crime has been a major concern. Criminal activities have eroded the sense of urban wellbeing and caused the desertion of neighbourhoods. While the Malaysian government tries to achieve sustainable urban development by containing urban sprawl, crime is undoing these efforts. Interviews with residents in crime-prone areas show that many are increasingly threatened by criminal activities in their neighbourhoods and have shown high tendencies to move out of the neighbourhoods. Steps to contain this problem is by having neighbourhood-level security measures as well as heightened involvement in community safety initiatives
