One of the major challenges associated with the analysis of route choice modeling is the formulation of the choice set of alternatives that may allow a relatively accurate prediction of demand for travel routes. The subset of route alternatives in the choice set should be relevant and feasible and include the attributes considered most by travelers when they choose a route. This research investigated the role and significance of route choice set formations with a focus on the perspectives of the modeler and of travelers. Revealed preference data were collected from Sydney, Australia, residents about their choice of route for their most recent commuting trip. The survey tool was programmed to use the Google Maps application programming interfaces to collect the route choice information, including the selected route and the set of routes that were considered. Three discrete choice models were used to investigate the traveler’s inclination toward certain attributes of routes, considering both car and public transit routes with the master choice set. The effect of possible bias generated because of the formation of route choice from the perspective of the modeler was also analyzed and presented with the results. The results show the intuitive signs of various attributes, with travel time being the significant factor for route choice. The difference between the choice sets considered by the traveler and by the modeler also suggests that those considered by the modeler possess enough variation to offer the possibility of better capturing important factors affecting route choice behavior.

The present study aimed to determine the effect of cultural differences on consumer behavior. A total of 793 participants (both Brazilians and Australians) were exposed to the Values Scale, the Meaning and Judgment Scale, and measures of car attributes and consumer behavior. There was a main effect of country on cultural patterns such that Australians scored higher on individualism than on collectivism. Australians preferred piecemeal judgment and placed more importance on the product's tangible attributes, whereas Brazilians preferred affective judgment. As predicted, the direct route was stronger for Brazilians than for Australians, who preferred the indirect route. Results are discussed in terms of the ethic validity of the model for individuals who endorse cultural values other than individualism.

Stochastic user equilibrium is a behaviorally realistic framework for strategic demand modeling and forecasting in cities/regions where there are multiple tolled facilities, especially when it comes to patronage forecasting for existing or planned tolled facilities. However, there is currently no algorithm available in the literature or in commercial software that provides a comprehensive approach for stochastic user equilibrium assignment that addresses the generation of route choice sets for tolled roads, path overlap, and high levels of convergence. This paper presents a novel choice set generation algorithm combined with the path-size logit model and the bi-conjugate Frank-Wolfe equilibrium assignment in a comprehensive algorithm for forecasting tolled road patronage, along with the results of its application to a real-life model in Brisbane, Australia.

A deep understanding of school travel mode can help policymaking related to the optimization of the school travel structure, alleviating urban traffic congestion due to the increasingly prominent phenomenon of urban sprawl. However, existing studies in this field are based on a specific research perspective, and comprehensive reviews are rather limited. Therefore, this study aims to provide an in-depth, systematic review of school travel by using bibliometric analysis. Firstly, based on the Web of Science, TRID, ScienceDirect, and MEDLINE databases, 457 studies about school travel are selected from between 1996 and 2021. Secondly, utilizing bibliometric analysis, the research progress is summarized with emphasis on the annual performance of the literature, publication status of a country or region, literature source institutions, keywords of the literature, and co-citation network analysis. The research results show that (1) the United States, Canada, and Australia rank top in the number of studies on school travel, and they also have high citation frequency and connection strength. (2) This study collects studies published in 34 journal publications, and the “Journal of Transport & Health” is the main source for publishing research. (3) The choice of school travel mode is significantly affected by individual characteristics, family conditions, and social status. The built environment and parental factors play a leading role in students’ active travel to school, and independent mobility and active transport contribute to students’ healthy development. However, policy planning is necessary to further improve the transportation infrastructure sustainability and school route safety. (4) Finally, several promising directions and potential limitations are discussed for developing countries based on the research progress in developed economies.

Introduction: Current guidelines recommend low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWH) over Vitamin K Antagonists (VKA) or Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants (NOAC) for the treatment of cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (CAT), but also highlight that ultimately the choice of anticoagulant depends on patient-specific factors such as patient preferences, which is important for the acceptance of the treatment and, thus, for adherence and persistence. So far, little is known about the specific preferences of patients with CAT with respect to anticoagulation therapy. More specifically, the impact of dosing regimen, convenience and costs on patient preferences in CAT is poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this discrete choice experiment (DCE) was to elucidate patient preferences regarding anticoagulation convenience attributes. Methods: Adult patients with active cancer who experienced a CAT event and for whom the decision was made to start a treatment with rivaroxaban after being treated with the standard of care anticoagulation (LMWH/VKA) for at least four weeks were included in a multinational, observational, single-arm study (COSIMO). As part of this study, a DCE was presented to the participants, who were asked to decide between complete hypothetical treatment options based on a combination of different attributes, regardless of efficacy or safety. The following attributes were preselected in a face-to-face discussion with three focus patients and in-depth interviews with four additional patients: route of administration (injection / tablet),frequency of intake (once / twice daily),need of regular controls of the International Normalized Ratio (INR) at least every 3-4 weeks (yes/no),interactions with food/alcohol (yes/no). Additionally, distance to treating physician (1 km vs. 20 km) was included as neutral comparator to express patients' overall utility in terms of a comprehensible unit. The relative importance of treatment attributes in terms of distances were calculated based on ratios between the utility estimates for each attribute. A fractional factorial design was generated resulting in nine hypothetical choice sets, supplemented by a test choice set to assess the consistency of a patient's responses. DCE data was collected by semi-structured telephone interviews, performed between week 4 and week 12 after enrollment of patients in the study and start of rivaroxaban. For each patient participating in the DCE interview, a written informed consent was obtained. Patient preferences were analyzed based on a conditional logit regression model. Results: Overall, 163 patients were included (Europe: 119; Canada: 41; Australia: 3), mean age 63.7 years, 49.1% were females and diagnosed with cancer for on average 22.4 months. Most patients in the COSIMO study changed to rivaroxaban from LMWH (> 95.0 %). The median time from diagnosis of index CAT event to conduct of DCE was 150 days (IQR 88-229). Patients strongly preferred oral administration compared to self-injections and drugs that can be taken irrespective of type of food or alcohol consumption (Figure 1). Furthermore, patients indicated slight preference for a shorter distance to the treating physician and a once daily dosing regimen compared to a twice-daily intake. The attribute "INR controls" showed no significant impact on the treatment decision. In order of patients' preference for their choice of treatment, the route of administration was by far the most important attribute for a patient's choice (73.8% of the overall decision), followed by food interactions (11.8%), the distance to treating physician (7.2%) and the intake frequency (6.5%). Accordingly, the expected utility of patients receiving an oral anticoagulation can be expressed as willingness to travel an additional distance of 192 km to the treating physician in order to avoid an injection. Conclusions Treatment related decision-making of patients with CAT, assuming equal effectiveness and safety of treatments, is predominantly driven by "route of administration", indicating a strong preference for oral intake. The optic chiasm of mammals is the region of the nervous system in which optic axons have a choice of route, either they enter the optic tract on the same side of the brain or they cross the chiasm and enter the opposite optic tract. in eutherian (placental) mammals, axons approach the midline of the chiasm and then either continue across the chiasm or turn back to enter the tract on the same side of the brain. The midline of the chiasm provides guidance cues that repel uncrossed but not crossed axons. However, it has recently been shown that in a marsupial, the quokka wallaby, axons destined to stay on the same side of the brain remain in the lateral part of the optic nerve and chiasm and never approach the midline. The structure of the chiasm reflects this partitioning of axons with different routes by having a tripartite structure. The two lateral regions contain only uncrossed axons in rostral chiasmatic regions and the central region contains only crossed axons. Therefore, axons passing through the chiasm of this species must use guidance cues that differ from those of eutherian mammals. Here I show that the chiasms of species of both diprotodont and polyprotodont Australian marsupials have a similar tripartite structure and that uncrossed axons are confined to lateral regions. It seems likely, therefore, that the chiasm of marsupials has fundamental differences in structure and optic axon trajectory compared with that of eutherian mammals studied to date.

This paper demonstrates the ability of a model, which simulates competition between airlines in a domestic aviation market, to accurately reproduce real-world behavior. The Australian market was chosen as a test case as it is a geographically isolated region with significant demand and complexity, including one of the busiest routes in the world, where connecting international passengers do not significantly skew the market. The model is based on an n-player noncooperative game, in which each airline represents a player within the game. The primary assumption is that each airline attempts to maximize profits by adjusting the decision variables of airfares, flight frequency, and choice of aircraft on routes within its network. The approach works iteratively, allowing each airline to respond to the decisions made by other airlines during each successive optimization. The model is said to reach convergence when there is no significant change in any airline’s profit from one iteration to the next. Once this occurs, the predictions of each airline’s decision variables can be compared with real data. The model gives highly detailed predictions of airline specific airfares, flight frequencies on segments, passenger flows, and airline market share, which strongly correlate with observed values.

Written by the acclaimed Australian poet Kenneth Slessor, “Post-roads” is the second poem of his sequence The Atlas and of his collection Cuckooz Contrey (1932), in which it debuted. Like the other four Atlas poems, “Post-roads” begins with a quote from a prominent seventeenth-century map-maker; in this case, John Ogilby (1600–1676)—the celebrated British publisher, surveyor, and cartographer. Slessor not only transformed Ogilby’s work (and portrait) into poetic images, but made Ogilby’s “tireless ghost” the central character of his poem. This article, part of the first full-scale examination of Slessor’s ambitious but poorly understood sequence, begins by reproducing the poem and tracing the poem’s development in Slessor’s poetry notebook. To reconstruct his creative process, it details the poet’s debt to the ephemeral catalogue of atlases and maps in which he discovered his title, epigraph, central character, and a possible source for the colorfully named coaches and carriages that conveyed passengers not only throughout London and Britain beginning in the early seventeenth century, but also throughout Australia from around 1800 to 1920. After comparing poet and cartographer, we consider the poem’s relationship to two of Ogilby’s atlases: the monumental Britannia (1675) and the posthumous, if far more accessible Traveller’s Guide (1699, 1712). Both reveal how Ogilby—even from the grave—helped passengers like the poem’s “yawning Fares” trace their routes. Finally, after offering reasons for Slessor’s choice of “Guildford” out of all the place-names along the roads through England and Wales, and proposing literary inspirations for “Post-roads,” the paper returns to Slessor’s hero/artist.

Routine antenatal screening tests currently recommended in Australasia and endorsed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG) include rubella, varicella-zoster, group b streptococcus [GBS], asymptomatic bacteriuria, as well as the following STIs: Treponema pallidum (syphilis), Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis B virus (HBsAg), Chlamydia trachomatis (adolescent pregnancies) and offer of hepatitis C virus (HCV). Infections can infect the foetus or neonate by various routes (intrauterine, intrapartum and /or postnatal) and cause potentially serious disease. Such infections in the mother may be mild or commonly subclinical, yet can result in miscarriage, preterm birth, foetal damage, or even death, depending on the pathogen and stage of pregnancy. Consequently, diagnoses should be made definitively by instituting appropriate laboratory tests to ensure effective treatment and follow-up of the woman and her infant, as well as her contact(s). Specific treatment of the mother, where applicable, can prevent most of the impact on the fetus and newborn. The principles for the use and choice of screening tests are (1) if maternal infection occurs, there is a significant risk of fetal or neonatal infection and damage, or other adverse pregnancy outcome; (2) there are sensitive, specific, and inexpensive screening and confirmatory tests; (3) there is a safe, effective intervention and/or treatment regimen which can reduce morbidity and mortality in the fetus and/or the mother.

Gaining and holding office is the fundamental requirement for all prime ministers. This chapter explores their routes to power, by winning elections or by replacing an incumbent, and then assesses the differences the alternative routes make to the prime ministers’ fortunes. It asks how vulnerable prime ministers are to being replaced by rivals from their own party and shows how different institutional rules shape the strategic choices for those who want the top job. In Australia and New Zealand they must fight; in Canada they often flee; in Britain they fulminate but have difficulty in striking. A change in rules changes both the strategic options of the ambitious and the levers available to incumbent prime ministers.
