The present work aims, firstly, to analyze the changes in the commercial topography of the city of Rome in classical times and second to discuss surroundings of the emergence of new avenues of luxury character. The Roman expansion by the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during the republican period allowed to reaffirm Rome over the rest of the cities. War booties, new colonized territories, and a more globalized economy fostered the interests of an increasingly rich section of the population. Traditional elites and newcomers competed for the most unique and unique products of the known world. With the change of era, the craftsman specialized in the elaboration and subsequent sale of luxury products in Rome was acquiring the control of the premises closest to the political-administrative center of the Urbs. Thus, to the important historical value of the area was added a concentration of diverse specialized trades vertebrates by the sacra via, varying the commercial character of the urban center, transforming itself from an agricultural commerce to a luxurious one. In order to know what the interests of the urban elites of the ss. I-III A.D. I studied the different commercial sectors highlighted in the epigraphy of the characters involved in the luxury trade in Rome. In a second section, I compared this information with the current one to verify if it is possible to determine a pattern of similarity, first, in the taste for the sumptuary and second, in knowing what type of businesses turn out to be the most notorious in sumptuous avenues. To do, I examined the five most important commercial avenues of the years 2015/16 according to the ranking prepared by the real estate consultants Cushman and Wakefield in the publication Main Streets Across The World.

AbstractThis article presents a new interpretation of the results of the 1980s excavations led by Andrea Carandini on the north Palatine slope. In contrast to Carandini's original reconstruction of the complex as four atrium houses, I propose one palatial complex on the Sacra Via that finds some parallels in recently excavated complexes elsewhere, like the Auditorium site in Rome and the Borgo at San Giovenale.

The Arch of Titus, constructed circa 81 CE under the emperor Domitian, commemorates the victory of the general, then emperor Titus in the Jewish War of 66–74 CE. Located on Rome’s Via Sacra, the Arch has been a “place of memory” for Romans, Christians and Jews since antiquity. This essay explores the history of a Jewish counter-memory of a bas relief within the arch that depicts the triumphal procession of the Jerusalem Temple treasures into Rome in 71 CE. At least since the early modern period, Jews—as well as British Protestants—came to believe that the menorah bearers of this relief represent Jews, and not Roman triumphadors. This essay addresses the history of this widespread belief, particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and continuing in contemporary Israel.

Robert Gundry, in a new major commentary on Mark, advances convincingly the thesis that the second Gospel is an extended apology for the cross. More specifically, Gundry argues that Mark portrays the passion of Christ as an aspect of his glory. This article intends to follow that thesis up an avenue not travelled in Gundry's commentary – namely the Via Dolorosa, which, I will argue, replaces the Sacra Via of Rome and renders the passion a triumph in a quite literal sense. In other words, I will maintain that details of a particular segment of the crucifixion narrative (Mark 15.16–32) evoke a Roman triumphal procession, and that Mark designs this ‘anti-triumph’ to suggest that the seeming scandal of the cross is actually an exaltation of Christ. In this interpretation, many details of the crucifixion narrative that appear to be incidental are in fact important features in a parabolic drama which a late first-century Roman audience would be uniquely situated to comprehend.

ABSTRACT:On the definitive return of the pope to Rome in 1420, following the so-called Avignonese captivity, the city underwent major modifications. The ‘romanam curiam sequentes’, the court and administration that followed the traditionally itinerant pope, settled in the city, leading to Rome's population doubling in the space of a few years. Furthermore, with the support of the pope, the members of the curia came to take possession of spaces, offices, roles and rituals that had previously been the reserve of the local Romans. This article considers the reaction of the community of the local nobility (here described summarily as Roman families) to the encroaching presence of the curia within the specific context of the development of the built form of the via Papalis. It is argued that the via Papalis, one of the most important and prestigious streets in Rome, became the theatre within which these two communities played out their conflict through the medium of built and ephemeral architecture.

The recent archaeological discoveries made in the north-western quadrant of Rome, within the ambit of so‑called ‘emergency archaeology’, make it possible to put knowledge into practice in a subject area which stimulates intense academic debate: the territory between Veii and Rome, in the period between the Archaism and the final conquest of the Etruscan city. The data available until now that have been employed in the reconstruction of settlement dynamics come almost exclusively from funerary contexts. The archaeological evidences–pertaining to residential structures–are rare and sporadic, although gradually increasing. The case illustrated here of the excavation in the Lucchina area (Via Trionfale, Ottavia) represents a rare opportunity to examine a ‘border’ culture in depth through information provided by investigations–still under way–into a complex of Etruscan-Veian dwellings: houses with a tripartite layout of which there remain the bases in tufa blocks and collapsed tiles. In the necropolis, on the other hand, a tomb is being investigated of the Veian type a vestibolo or a tramite, with access steps and three loculi (two for cremations and one for inhumation) which have yielded a rich funerary equipment. A Veian community, then, providing evidence of the phenomenon of ‘internal colonisation’ of the suburb of the city so close to the border with Rome.

AbstractA set of monumental stone stairs on the hillside south of Cyrene's Wadi Bel Gadir Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone were first detected by Shi'mon Applebaum during World War 2 on a now lost aerial photograph. Today his theory that the stairs connected a hilltop structure (now partially covered by a modern farm installation), with the still unidentified Demeter Sanctuary and that all three elements belonged to a Jewish temple complex is no longer sustainable, at least as far as the Demeter Sanctuary goes. But the stairs still exist, still unexcavated and largely unrecorded. What remains visible suggests that they may have been partially covered with a wooden roof and that they served as a ceremonial link between two important components of the suburban city analogous to that played by the porticoed Via Sacra leading to Cyrene's Sanctuary of Apollo. A plea is made for their excavation.

Contemporary life is closely interconnected with numerous phenomena, which have appeared in our life in recent decades. The concepts of a smart city, digitalization of the economy, and the sharing economy are among them. These factors create new opportunities for businesses operating in modern markets. The article considers the sharing services in digital payment operations for achieving the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of a smart city. The goal of the research is to determine the costs of sharing economy implementation in the financial sector of a smart city. The study takes the example of Rome’s experience. The authors consider KPIs selected by the municipality of Rome as a measure of smart city implementation and their provision by sharing services in financial operations. The authors specify the structure of the costs of shared financial services for a smart city and for Fintech companies operating with open banking, which is followed by the cost functions peculiar to these operations of Fintech companies. The authors demonstrate the point at which a Fintech company starts earning a positive profit on these services via operating leverage.

In 2009 the Municipality of Rome (MR) started a re-qualification program for the street markets through the use of public-private partnership (PPP). This program concerns strategic areas and buildings within the city of Rome, including the Flaminio II street market located in Via Guido Reni in the Flaminio district. In summary, this paper intends to: i) examine the Flaminio II market pre-feasibility project elaborated by MR; ii) with reference to the PPP regulatory framework, show a further proposal to be compared with the proposal by MR. This further proposal represents the first alternative solution, drawn up in order to guarantee that following PPPs concerning street markets are approved by MR; it will be implemented in a concerted way, which will take into account the actual needs of the local stakeholders.

Is at work studying the trajectory of Myth and the Human Condition in tales of Via Sacra, and A Cidade do Ó cio, from Jose Mendonça Teles. It is part of our proposal to give special attention to the trajectory of the anonymous man in the city that smashes through violence, the mass, the eroticism, the consumerism and many other phenomena typical of this season. We will use mainly the phenomenological method, so we want to capture the philosophical lines inserted in the process established by the poetics of J.M.T. We want to analyze the characters in various aspects of types failed, individuals grinder, incompetent to live in the words of Mario de Andrade. We emphasize these fictitious beings created by the imbalance hypocrisy in marital relations, the search for meaning to life , the struggle for survival in a city whose doors are closed to those who have not had opportunities to carry the arsenal necessary to war for a good job; the anguish of those who wish to have loyalty to the values which were transmitted and at the same time, with no strength to resist the pleasure that life offers them (mainly the sex). All these factors become grounds to bring the characters to falling out with themselves, with others and the environment, polarized by antagonism Ethics and Pleasure, Pleasure and Punishment. We will focus on the long journey of the characters, they will journey into building (or destroying) the most diverse representations of themselves, according to the situations presented to them. We capture the species of oppression and adulteration that urban life is presenting the man in megacities (Goiania, specifically), in the process of metamorphosis from quiet provincials cities that are transformed into chaos embryos of contemporary society and modernity as Camus (1999 p.130) Living in a city is an art, the narrator therefore needs the vocabulary of art and style to create unique relationship between man and space that exists in the continuous creative interaction of urban life in Goiania. The style and art that is the prime objective of this work.

Abstract Some aspects of the archaeological evidence for Etruria are given here as a counterpoint to the more detailed presentation of evidence from Rome and Latium. In general, the Etruscan evidence shows more variety of local exotic ware, and more imported material in terms of types and quantity. The funerary evidence from Etruria is considerably greater and more elaborate than that from Latium, and only Rome is on a scale comparable with the great Etruscan centres. By the end of the seventh century the major Etruscan settlements were fairly advanced; they were developing orthogonal planning and there are other suggestions of a unified approach to the layout and organization of the community, through religion, fortifications, and clearly demarcated trading areas. Orthogonal planning was probably connected with augural practices, though there was a spectio along the Via Sacra in Rome, a city notorious for its lack of orthogonality.

Abstract It is now our duty to say something about a figure who will play an important role in the course of this story and whom the reader scarcely knows, since we touched on her, in passing, only in the first chapter. She is the midwife who, as we said, served as godmother to the subject of these memoirs. The comadre was a short, excessively fat, good-natured woman, simple, or simpleminded, to a certain extent, though in another sense quite discerning. She lived by her practice of midwifery, which she had adopted out of curiosity, and by pronouncing blessings to ward off the evil eye. She was widely known to be highly devout, the most assiduous churchgoer in the city. She was an unerring calendar of every religious feast day observed here, knew by heart the days on which Mass was said in this church and that, as well as the time and ,the priest’s name; she was on time to every Mass, litany, novena, and septenary; she never missed a Via-Sacra procession or sermon. In short, she kept her time so deployed and the schedules so organized that she never arrived at church to find Mass already at the altar. She began at dawn with the Mass at Our Lady of the Lapa; no sooner had it concluded than she was on her way to 8:oo Mass at the Se; and leaving it she caught the 9:00 at the Church of Santo Antonio.

Abstract This chapter is a brief account of the archaeological evidence from Rome from the early sixth to the early fifth centuries. The evidence is arranged in four sections. The first attempts to show the evidence for Rome’s settlement pattern. The second is concerned with the religious buildings and sites in Rome; the social and political implications of religion are the subject of a later chapter. The third section focuses on the Forum area, and then on the Via Sacra leading out of the Forum, and the other roads in Rome. The final section is an account of the Forum Boarium. A concluding section summarizes the evidence for the unity of Rome, the main focus and purpose of the building activity, and the extent of non-Latin influence on the settlement.

Abstract The site of Fellini’s Rome is, mostly, studio 5 at Cinecitta`—just as its sight is, mostly, Fellini’s. Even the Colosseum and the jammed autostradawhich surrounds it in Roma(1972) are sets created for Fellini—so are the Baths of Caracalla, the Via Veneto, and, even, the dome of St Peter’s in La Dolce Vita(1960). In Fellini Satyricon(1969), classical Rome is mostly absent, or else unrecognizable. In this sense, Fellini’s Rome is artiWcial and constructed—it is also spectacular, and dream-like. It is Xooded with memories, both personal and collective. It is diYcult to Wnd cohesive routes and vistas through it—and it is diYcult to distinguish past, present, and future—let alone fact and Wction. Ruin and decay permeate it as much as energy and vitality. It is impossible to categorize generically: the Satyriconis history and science Wction, Romais documentary and Wction, La Dolce Vitais narrative and non-narrative. Rome is both home and exile (in Satyricon), maternal and sexual (in Roma), welcoming and alienating (in La Dolce Vita). Like many of the sites and sights discussed in this volume, Fellini’s cinematic Rome is a city of the imagination, in which past and * I owe thanks to Diana Spencer and David Larmour, and to OUP’s reader, for their generous and insightful comments on the Wrst draft of this piece, and to Susanna Binelli for helping me with translating Italian.

Abstract A number of recurring themes dominate the archaeology of Latin sites in the sixth and early fifth centuries; domestic architecture, temple buildings, and votive deposits. There is a notable absence of any secure evidence concerning land use, and it is quite obvious that the houses of which we know represent no more than a small part of the habitations on the various sites. One presumes that they represent the houses of the aristocrats because of their size and permanence, in which case we are ignorant, as so often, of how and where the rest of the populace lived. We may begin with the three sites on the Via Salaria to the north of Rome. Antemnae has a large number of roof-tiles, ceramic ware, copper, and bronze, which seems to represent an increase in the number of buildings and an intense occupation, perhaps the most flourishing period of the city. In addition to the large numbers of buildings seen by Lanciani before the construction of the nineteenth-century fort, some of which may have had upper storeys in clay or rough bricks, there were found cisterns, wells, and a drainage system, which inspire comparison with the drainage of the centre of Rome at a similar period. There may also have been an internal road, part of the network joining the site to Rome. A wall and ditch protected the settlement; the wall may have encircled the site though possibly not of a regular height. An antefix of the Juno Lanuvina type has been attributed to the site and seems to date from the early fifth century, indicating a sanctuary preceding the Hellenistic phase, which is the earliest we know from other evidence.

Abstract In a very perceptive paper, John North (1992) has identified the growth of voluntary religious systems, i.e. groups or beliefs to which an individual might adhere independently of civic circumstances, as one of the most significant religious developments of the imperial period. The reasons for this development are numerous and complex, but I would argue that one important factor was the fact that religious identity had ceased to be politically charged. As a result, the institution of a new public cult had much less significance for the or do of Carthage than it had had for the Senate in republican Rome. More importantly, the élite had less reason to interfere with the private religious activities of those who lived in their city. As I suggested in the introduction, however, people in a cosmopolitan society, unless they are subject to some external restraints, inevitably define their own religious identities in increasingly diverse ways. As a major port city in the Roman empire, Carthage was very cosmopolitan, and not surprisingly its inhabitants engaged in an extremely broad range of private religious activities. The ordo did virtually nothing to restrict these activities, and the imperial government did little more. Consequently, individuals were to a large extent able to define their own religious identities as they pleased. This is not to say that the collective identity shaped by the sacra publica of Carthage was of no importance, or that cults which symbolically linked the participants to the emperor and the empire were meaningless. Both phenomena were indeed significant. It is rather to say that ultimately there was no control of religious identity in the empire, and that in its absence there was nothing that we can truly describe as official religion.

The provinces of Epirus and Macedonia, although divided into distinct regions by their mountains, were important for the Roman Empire, particularly because they were crossed by the via Egnatia which snaked its way eastwards, serving as the vital link between Rome and Constantinople at a time when insecurity was increasing along the Danubian frontier. From the middle of the third century, cities in this part of the Empire were under threat and their fortifications were reinforced in the fifth (Thessalonika) and sixth centuries (Byllis under Justininian). There was prosperity in the fourth century and beginning of the fifth. During the fifth century, the houses of Philippi were partly transformed into workshops. The sixth century was difficult and the second half was especially bleak. However, contacts between east and west were still maintained, along with local production. From 540–550, however, barbarian invasions and plague worsened the general situation. Graves appeared inside the city walls. Archaeology (Slav pottery and fibulae) and texts (Miracula Sancti Demetrii) all demonstrate how hard times were from the 580s to the 630s.

The Editors of this Book Requested a study of an individual city to contrast with the broader regional surveys. This contribution attempts to demonstrate the advantages of a fuller exploration of the specific context of a civic coinage by focusing on selected issues from the coinage of Pergamum— alongside Ephesus and Smyrna one of the three largest cities in the Western part of Asia Minor. In the Julio-Claudian period Pergamum’s coin designs were dominated by the imperial succession and the city’s first neocorate temple (17 BC–AD 59). In AD 59 Pergamum’s coinage stopped for more than two decades. When it resumed under Domitian (AD 83) new topics were continuously introduced until the reign of Caracalla (AD 211–17). These included gods, cults, heroes, personifications, architecture, sculpture, games, and civic titles. After Caracalla the city concentrated on a few key images, such as Asclepius or the emperor. At the same time, coin legends— especially civic titles—gained greater importance. This trend continued until the city’s coinage came to an end under Gallienus (AD 253–68). The overall range of Pergamum’s coin iconography was broadly similar to that of other cities in the East of the Roman empire. Coins of Pergamum from the imperial period fall into (at least) sixty-four issues, the most diverse of which employed twenty different coin types. In all, around 340 different types are currently known. They provide a solid base from which to explore various relationships. These include the relationship between coin obverses and reverses, as well as the place of an individual coin type within its own issue, and within the city’s coinage as a whole. Coin designs could allude to objects and events within Pergamum itself, or focus on the city’s connections with the outside world: with small neighbouring cities, with the other great cities within the province of Asia, or with Rome and the imperial family. Communication via the medium of civic coinage was in the first instance presumably directed towards the citizens of Pergamum. At the same time coinage also reflected developments outside the city. Social and geographical mobility was encouraged by an imperial system which allowed distinguished members of local elites access to the highest military and administrative posts.

E-mail: giancarlo.salamone@uniroma1.it Keywords (3-5): Restructuring, Rome, Trastevere, process, reading method, tools, analysis in urban morphology Conference topics and scale: Tools of analysis in urban morphology Trastevere, the only area of the historic center of Rome (together with the Vatican / Borgo complex) located on the right side of the Tiber river, shows a morphological structure that depends on the pre-existing substrate, both road that typological, which was modified during the post-unity period by the establishment of the Tiber fronts and, above all, by the opening of Viale Trastevere. In the way of thinking about urban morphology as a scalar product of the factors that influence each other, in particular building typology, local structure, overall structure and territory, and that contribute together to generate an organism, it is therefore possible to read this part of the historical center as the last product, but not definitive, of a "process". The reading method on the consolidated structure, later renovated in a post-unification era, is based on the analysis of the most abundant building typology and on the permanence and derivations of local typological processes that led to the formulation of the “line house” in nineteenth-century line, the predominant building type of roman expansion in nineteenth-twentieth century. The reading of the restructuring, understood as synchronic action on the historical center, has been implemented instead by the analysis of synchronic variations at “line house” through the research of all projects registered for the edification of each block. Thus we can see how the blocks resulting from the transformation, in the logic of a restructuring "contromaglia" like the one for the opening of Viale Trastevere, will be the result of the disconnection of the existing blocks in which the building type adopted has had to adapt to a lower return situations: a reading of a synchronic action on a diachronic process that gives us the modern morphological apparatus. At the time of its establishing, Rome was a city – state with not such a large number of citizens and of restricted territory. Thanks to historical circumstances, as well as to skills and pragmatism of the ancient Romans, the city was soon turned into a powerful empire. During the reign of the Emperor Augustos, Rome became a city with over one million inhabitants and with around hundred public baths and other numerous public buildings and parks, while the Coloseum itself could accommodate 55 000 spectators. All of this attracted people from other places to come to Rome, just for a visit, or to seek jobs and remain there. Whatever was the purpose of their comings and goings, this required organized transportation via well built roads or established sea routes. Also, it was necessary to organize the provision of food and other basic supplies. Certain Roman provinces specialized in the production of certain crops and goods they mutually exchanged – which, again, required an organized road and sea transportation. In one word, vivacious trading and exchanging of goods resulted in developed transportation system without which Rome could never have reached such an extent of expansion.

This analysis, carried out within the Lettura e Progetto Laboratory of "Sapienza" University of Rome and based on the “processual” method, proposes the reconstruction, through the reading and interpretation of the formative process, of the urban settlement of Fiumicino, on the east coast of Rome . The area was formed by a set of fragmented interventions developed in different phases, with heterogeneous destinations and, apparently, no relation of necessity. The site appears mainly linked to the development of illegal buildings that date back to the second postwar period. However, a deeper analysis based on the reading and interpretation of the character of the building fabric, shows the existence of a clear relation of historical continuity between the today town and the territorial structures developed starting from the ancient city of Portus. Through this reading emerges the plan of a town connected to the activities of Porto Canale (Channel Port) in function since XVI Century. From the analysis of the historical cartography appears as a matrix route based on the continuation of the ancient via Portuense was formed in time and developed on the building routes that have resulted. We believe that this is a remarkable case study that exemplifies the formation of local identity at the edge of the metropolis as over time the area has developed a complex structure, connected to port activities, that is now forming its own urban character and individuality, so that recently it was constituted in autonomous municipality. This paper shows the results of 3 years of research developped on a urban area of priority importance in the formation of the city of Rome, too often overlooked by the sector’s studies because of its not barycentric position in comparison to the actual historical center. The area is an excerpt of the Rione Monti, historically known with the toponym Suburra; in detail that Rione portion included among via Panisperna, via Cavour and via dei Fori Imperiali, which has preserved the original historic fabric characteristics. The research has then enabled a process of knowledge of the city meant as analysis of urban transformation through the historical-archival investigation, the maps and documents reading, the typological study, the architecture's structural control, all correlated to the geomorphological conformation of the territory and the urban farbic transformations. With the simultaneous application and the collected data examination through the survey and the graphic systematization. To make the reading of this process more accessible and immediate it has been chosen to use the 3D modeling to communicate and facilitate the comparison between the successive eras in order to receive and give a innovative response to the instances required by the application of ICT in the documentation of Cultural Heritage (Horizon 2020 - ICT for digital content and creativity). Modeling, possible by the integration of the data produced from the sources with the direct relief, was extended to the entire studied area and it’s been focused on the reconstruction of certain moments of the timeline.

This negletc state produces a serious problem related to a wider phenomenon of abandonment of entire portions of italian territories. Realities that differ form the city because of their morphology: Does urban shape represent an urban limit? or is it an alternative testimony to the city? Research purpose is to understand how relationship, between these cases and the territory, works; in particular during the absence of the main component: the human one. The case study Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an ancient village in the center of Italy, inhabited until 90's, shows how the examination of urban shape represents the potentiality of his own revitalization. By relating his historical identity to the scattered hotel projectual approach, it contributes to combine conservation, valorization and sustainability of the existing building fabric, in order to claim the authenticity of these villages declaring their own autonomy and dimension to major urban centers polarization. In this example transformation is meant as conscious project that grow up from the built reality not from the project itself, transformation as knowledge of urban facts, tool to approach to the structure of this reality. In recent years much has been written and exhibited regarding Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian/Brazilian architect (1914-1992). This paper aims to look at the phenomenon of cultural displacement and the dissemination of her design thinking as a major female figure in a male dominated profession. This investigation is distinguished from others in that it addresses the importance of regional and cultural influences that formed Lina’s design philosophy in her early years in Italy. Cultural displacement has long played a significant role in the creative process for artists. Often major innovators in literature are immigrants as elements of strangeness, distance, and alienation all contribute to their creativity. The premise is that critical distance is paramount for reflection as a change of context unfolds unforeseen possibilities. Displacement was a consistent element throughout the trajectory of Lina’s architectural career as she moved from Rome to Milan, from Milan to Sao Paolo from Sao Paolo to Bahia and back to Sao Paolo. Viewing this form of detachment and dislocation permits insight into her career and body of work as displacement mediates the paradoxical relationship between time and space. The paper will examine three distinct periods in her career. The first period is set in Rome, where she assimilated the city, showed artistic aptitude and spent her university years studying under Piacentiniand Giovannoni. The second period is set in Milan, where she developed impressive editorial and layout skills in publications work with Gio Ponti and BrunoZevi. and was influenced by Antonio Gramsci’s writings. The third is set in Brazil, where she builds and evolves as an architect via what she absorbed in Rome, wrote in Milan, and finally realized in Brazil. After Italy’s collapse in WWII Lina writes, draws, edits, critiques the plight of the Italians in need of better housing and circumstances. She leaves Milan with her new husband, PM Bardi (a prominent journalist, art critic) for Brazil. In Sao Paolo she absorbs the optimism and positive direction of Brazil. Her early design work in Brazil echoes European modernism, but when she travels to Bahia and becomes aware of the social conditions, she draws from her Italian experiences of and ideas of transforming lives through craft. Her architectural projects become directly responsive to the culture of Bahia and the politics of poverty. Lina’s design thinking evolves and parallels George Kubler’s study, The Shape of Time, and the history of man-made objects by bridging the divide between art and material culture.
