The study of the textile sector has always been central to economic history: from reconstructions of the dynamic growth in the medieval wool industry, to the rise of silk and light and mixed fabrics in the modern era, to the driving role of cotton in the industrialisation process. Although the dynamics of textile manufacturing are closely linked to the transformations of fashion, economic history has long neglected its role as a factor in economic change, treating it primarily as a kind of exogenous catalyst. This book makes a decisive contribution to the understanding of a fundamental transformation, the consequences of which are projected into contemporary society, but which matured in pre-industrial times: the advent of fashion.

In the book in the form of questions and answers considerable attention is paid to data on the needs of all types of poultry in nutritional, mineral and biologically active substances, taking into account age of poultry. The characteristic of the main feed products is given, and the rational norms for including them in mixed feed for poultry are indicated. The role of vitamins, macro- and microelements, enzyme preparations, probiotics, prebiotics, antibiotics, organic acids, antioxidants, emulsifiers and other sources of biologically active substances in poultry nutrition is shown. Both nutritional factors that reduce the immune system and the causes of major feed diseases, which are related to the quality of feed, with violations in the rationing of nutrients and minerals, are indicated, and also biologically active substances, technologies for feeding and keeping poultry, methods of their prevention are given.
It is addressed to specialists and managers of poultry farms, feed industry enterprises, researchers, postgraduates and students.

During the Late Middle Ages a unique type of ‘mixed media’ recycled and remnant art arose in houses of religious women in the Low Countries: enclosed gardens. They date from the time of Emperor Charles V and are unique examples of ‘anonymous’ female art, devotion and spirituality. A hortus conclusus (or enclosed garden) represents an ideal, paradisiacal world. Enclosed Gardens are retables, sometimes with painted side panels, the central section filled not only with narrative sculpture, but also with all sorts of trinkets and hand-worked textiles.Adornments include relics, wax medallions, gemstones set in silver, pilgrimage souvenirs, parchment banderoles, flowers made from textiles with silk thread, semi-precious stones, pearls and quilling (a decorative technique using rolled paper). The ensemble is an impressive and one-of-a-kind display and presents as an intoxicating garden. The sixteenth-century horti conclusi of the Mechelen Hospital sisters are recognized Masterpieces and are extremely rare, not alone at a Belgian but even at a global level. They are of international significance as they provide evidence of devotion and spirituality in convent communities in the Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth century. They are an extraordinary tangible expression of a devotional tradition. The highly individual visual language of the enclosed gardens contributes to our understanding of what life was like in cloistered communities. They testify to a cultural identity closely linked with mystical traditions allowing us to enter a lost world very much part of the culture of the Southern Netherlands. This book is the first full survey of the enclosed gardens and is the result of year-long academic research.

Recently, public policies of urban regeneration have intensified and multiplied. They are being promoted with the aim to start social and economic dynamics within the local context which is subject to intervention. From the empirical analysis, we realise that such activities are mainly implemented by three subjects or by mixed coalitions (public institutions, actors of the third sector and companies). Within them, each player is moved by a multiplicity of interests and goals that go beyond their own nature – public interest, market and mutualism – and tend to redefine themselves, thus becoming hybrid forms of production of value (social, economic, cultural). By studying a number Italian and Catalan cases, this essay deals with the theory that, under specific conditions and configurations, a collaborative direction – of organization, production and design – would give life to successful procedures, even without the identification of a one-best-way. The collaboration is not simply a choice of operation, but a real production method which mobilises social resources to create hybrid solutions – between state, market and society – to complex issues that could not be faced solely with the use of the rationale of action of one among the three actors. In this framework, the systems of relations and interactions between players and shared capital become an essential condition for the success of every initiative of urban redevelopment, or failure thereof. Such initiatives are brought to life by the strategic role of individuals who foster connections as well as the dissemination of non-redundant information between social networks, and collective and individual actors which would otherwise be separated and barely able to communicate and collaborate with each other. In addition to the functions carried out by knowledge brokers, that have been extensively described in organisational studies and economic sociology, the aforementioned figures act as real social enzymes, that is to say, they handle the available information and function as catalysts of social processes of production of knowledge. Moreover, they increase the reaction speed, working on mechanisms which control the spontaneity.

Focusing on language and media in Asian Russia, particularly in Buryat territories, this book engages debates about the role of minority media in society, alternative visions of modernity, and the impact of media on everyday language use. The book demonstrates that language and the production, circulation, and consumption of media are practices by which residents of the region perform and negotiate competing possible identities. What languages should be used in newspapers, magazines, or radio and television broadcasts? Who should produce them? What kinds of publics are and are not possible through media? How exactly do discourses move into, out of, and through the media to affect everyday social practices? The book addresses these questions through a rich ethnography of the Russian Federation's Buryat territories, a multilingual and multiethnic region on the Mongolian border with a complex relationship to both Europe and Asia. The book shows that belonging in Asian Russia is a dynamic process that one cannot capture analytically by using straightforward categories of ethnolinguistic identity.

How did engagement with the new printed book reshape early modern disciplines? This chapter considers the rapidly changing area of Renaissance mathematics, focusing on two ‘mixed’ mathematical disciplines, cosmography and music. In cosmography, the new paratexts transformed a medieval standby, Sacrobosco’s Sphere, into a cutting-edge handbook that taught students the procedures of calculation. In music, Lefèvre’s sensory experience of sound prompted him to adopt new geometrical tools to solve old arithmetical problems. In both cases, a close attention to the roles of visualization, touch, and hearing in mathematical practice prompted a distinctive approach to the printed page, shifting the very structures of the mathematical disciplines. The underlying mental habits such books were intended to inculcate can be traced through the margins of Beatus Rhenanus’ mathematical books.

Neuronal and mixed neuronal-glial tumours are rare tumours of the central nervous system that occur more commonly in children. Despite a generally benign course, most tumours cause medically intractable seizures, and have been denominated as ‘long-term epilepsy-associated tumours’. The World Health Organization classification distinguishes nine histological variants: dysplastic gangliocytoma of the cerebellum/Lhermitte–Duclos disease, desmoplastic infantile astrocytoma and ganglioglioma, dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour, gangliocytoma and ganglioglioma, central neurocytoma and extraventricular neurocytoma, cerebellar liponeurocytoma, papillary glioneuronal tumour, rosette-forming glioneuronal tumour of the fourth ventricle, and spinal paraganglioma. Early surgery with complete resection may significantly improve the likelihood of postoperative epilepsy freedom. Conformal radiotherapy can be considered in case of patients with incompletely resected symptomatic tumours, atypical or high-grade tumours, or in the case of multiple recurrences despite resections. The role of chemotherapy in these lesions remains poorly defined, while targeted therapies are now available to impact some molecular alterations.

Integrating organizational and individual perspectives, this chapter discusses the mixed consequences of workplace flexibility taking into account that each type can be understood from varying employment relationship vantages, outcomes, and implementation challenges. Dances and balls appear throughout literature as a place for young people to meet, flirt, and form relationships: as any reader of Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace, or Romeo and Juliet can attest, dance scenes provide an opportunity for writers to criticize societal expectations about courtship and partner choice, while simultaneously entertaining their readers. In this book, Sonia Gollance examines Jewish mixed-gender dancing in German and Yiddish literature, arguing that dance provides a powerful lens for understanding Jewish acculturation, secularization, and modernization. Gollance examines the specific literary qualities of dance scenes, such as the parallels between dance figures and plot structures, while also paying close attention to the broader social implications of Jewish engagement with dance during in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While traditional Jewish dance was among men only (or women only), mixed-sex dancing was the very sign of modernity, and thus a charged and complex arena for understanding the limits of acculturation, the dangers of class mixing, and the role of erotic engagement in modernization. Gollance’s book is organized around the spaces in which mixed dancing would take place: the tavern, the ballroom, the wedding, and the dance hall. Gollance also draws connections between the cultural history of social dance and contemporary popular culture, illustrating how mixed-sex dancing continues to function as a flexible metaphor for the concerns of Jewish communities in the face of cultural transitions.

The three basic parameters controlling electron transfer are presented: electronic interaction, structural change and interelectronic repulsion. Then electron transfer in discrete molecular systems is considered, with cases of inter- and intramolecular transfers. The semi-classical (Marcus—Hush) and quantum models are developed, and the properties of mixed valence systems are described. Double exchange in magnetic mixed valence entities is introduced. Biological electron transfer in proteins is briefly presented. The conductivity in extended molecular solids (in particular organic conductors) is tackled starting from band theory, with examples such as KCP, polyacetylene and TTF-TCNQ. It is shown that electron–phonon interaction can change the geometrical structure and alter conductivity through Peierls distortion. Another important effect occurs in narrow-band systems where the interelectronic repulsion plays a leading role, for instance in Mott insulators.

This article focuses on the potential therapeutic uses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in movement disorders. The brain can be stimulated with low levels of direct electrical current, called direct current polarization (tDCS). High-frequency repetitive TMS might increase brain excitability and be used for therapy in Parkinson's disease. Single sessions with TMS, however, have not proven to be very effective. Treatment with tDCS has been performed in some open studies with some success, but these results need confirmation. Physiological findings in dystonia reveal a decrease in intracortical inhibition. There have been a few studies of patients with Tourette's syndrome with mixed results. To date, clinical results with TMS in movement disorders have been mixed, and more work will be needed to clarify the potential clinical role of TMS.

The conclusion builds upon the content of the book to reflect on contemporary policing and crime control in its historical context, and on the politics of agency in social history. It argues that Victorian crime control is best characterized as a mixed economy, in which governance was shared between the police and the public. The modernization of crime control was marked less by a transition in governance from communities to the state, than by subtle shifts within this mixed economy. Furthermore, the chapter critiques accounts of late modern policing, which emphasize stark shifts (responsibilization, pluralization, etc.) in contemporary governance, and suggests instead that the Victorian era presents compelling antecedents of contemporary crime control strategies. Finally, given the role of ordinary people in responding to crime, the chapter reflects critically on conventional modes of thinking about power and agency in social history.

In 1923, Greece and Turkey entered into the Treaty of Lausanne to regulate the orderly transfer of Greek and Turkish populations displaced by the First World War. The treaty established a Mixed Arbitral Tribunal and a Mixed Commission to deal with property issues ensuing from the transfer of populations. However, a dispute arose in the implementation of the treaty which was ultimately referred to the Permanent Court of International Justice (PCIJ) for an advisory opinion. In its decision, the PCIJ sketched some of the main features of the international legal personality of international organizations and articulated the basic elements of the implied powers doctrine, thereby initiating the path towards consolidating the role of international organizations as international actors in their own right with powers beyond those strictly attributed to them by their establishing treaties. Some authors have assessed the performance of the Court in critical terms.

This chapter explores family lives of couples who migrate from a less gender-egalitarian (i.e., Poland) to a more egalitarian nation (i.e., Norway). The authors present selected results from a large-scale mixed-methods study drawing from interviews conducted longitudinally with couples in Poland and in Norway, interviews with public-sector servants and employers in Norway, and surveys on attitudes toward gender equality and men’s and women’s practices concerning division of parental roles and household duties in both Poland and Norway. The chapter examines the distribution of domestic responsibilities and potential change within cultural norms and practices in the context of migration and highlights cultural and psychological factors that facilitate social change from gender inequality to equality and from nonegalitarianism to egalitarianism among Polish migrant couples in Norway. The evolution of new, de-gendered family roles is discussed, with attention on factors enabling men to be more active in family life.

Although it did not set about to do so, the ICTY played a key role in catalyzing the creation of Serbia’s war crimes chamber (SWCC) and position of war crimes prosecutor. Once this happened, the ICTY Prosecutor seized the opportunity that emerged, devoting substantial attention to capacity-building initiatives. The record of Serbia’s war crimes institutions is decidedly mixed, as this chapter elucidates. Serbia has gone farther in prosecuting wartime atrocities than would have been the case without the ICTY. Yet recent years have brought a significant reversal of early progress in the context of heightened political pressure on the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor (OWCP).

This chapter discusses the role of the media in the formation and mobilization of the protest campaign under the concept of the partially censored public monitor. Embedded in the dominant political economic structure, the mainstream media were on the whole negative toward the Umbrella Movement. However, (self)-censorship was only partial, and the media system continued to play the role of the public monitor. The media played an important role in generating mediated instant grievances among the public when the police fired tear gas into the protesting crowd at the beginning of the occupation. They also helped monitor police violence throughout the protest campaign. Digital media strengthened the public monitor function of the media system as a whole by facilitating wider flows of media materials. As a result, the impact of the media on public opinion toward the Umbrella Movement was mixed and contradictory.

This article traces the long history of legal regulations around interracial sex and marriage as tied to important changes in the territorial consolidation and political formation of the American nation and its polity. These regulations stabilized ambiguous racial categories and gender roles as well as patriarchy and heteronormativity. The article begins in the colonial era to survey the range of local practices of interracial sex, marriage, and family formation that took place across different imperial contexts across the North American continent and moves into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the United States spanned the continent and pursued its own imperial ambitions globally. In addition, the article chronicles histories of resistance and mixed-race family formation that both challenged and worked within the limits of the law.

The notion of assimilation by immigrant groups remains beset by conceptual confusion. An examination of the way that assimilation developed in the American past, especially in the period after World War II, provides a way of cutting through the conceptual fog. Key features of historical assimilation are captured by the definition of the concept in neo-assimilation theory. However, debate over the present-day role of mainstream assimilation has been renewed by the advent of segmented assimilation. Both theories can point to evidence about the second generations issuing from contemporary immigrant groups to support their claims. A mixed picture is also found in the fundamental economic and demographic trends that are prognostic about assimilation.

By 1850 Crispus Attucks began playing a significant role in African Americans’ affirmation of their essential Americanness. Black abolitionists muted his mixed racial background in favor of a fully African American one, and his possible reasons for being part of the Boston mob were left unscrutinized. Attucks emerged as a black patriot and Founder. During and immediately after the Civil War, for African Americans, Attucks remained a symbol of black patriotism and military valor. But some whites began to emphasize his Native American background and to question his status as a hero. The new men’s role in Henry VII’s regime must be set amid the contribution made to his reign by other royal councillors and servants, bishops, lesser clerics, peers, and courtiers. Yet their efforts did much to give his government its distinctive flavour. Their careers as upwardly mobile agents of royal power were not unprecedented, but were notable in their impact, paralleled those of their contemporaries in other European polities, and foreshadowed those of later sixteenth-century statesmen. Their importance was evident to those interpreting Henry’s reign in the decades that followed, into the generations of Holinshed and Stow, Shakespeare, and Bacon. Critical contemporaries were right that they mixed self-help liberally with public service, but they were central to the making of Tudor England.

This chapter demonstrates how Florida attempted to address the problem of runaways but achieved mixed success at best. The legislative council and legislature passed numerous laws. Many reflected those of other southern states, although Florida offered lower rewards for the capture of runaways. The same laws anticipated that most white male Floridians would play a role in catching runaways. Private citizens, professional slave catchers, and others pursued and apprehended fugitives. Few owners and overseers pursued runaways personally because of the time involved away from plantations and farms. Slave patrols sometimes operated during times of crisis but proved, for the most part, ineffective in capturing runaways. Privately posted rewards generally brought better results, especially when combined with published notices that provided accurate information.

Toward the end of World War II, the three democracies faced a common choice: return to the civic order of prewar normalcy or embark instead on a path of progressive transformation. This book assesses the progressive agendas that crystallized in each of the allied democracies: their roots in the interwar decades, their development during wartime, the struggles to enact them in the early postwar years, and the mixed outcomes in each country. The book examines three progressive postwar manifestos that reveal a common agenda in the three nations. The issues at stake included priorities for reconstruction or reconversion; “full employment” via economic planning; price controls; the roles of trade unions; expansion of social security; national health care; public housing; and educational reform. The book persuasively adds the United States to a discussion that is usually focused solely on Europe.

The evening star and its counterpart, the morning star, play important roles as generic markers in wedding poetry and love poetry. Poetic appearances of the stars commonly allude to at least one previous example, creating a chain of literary references across antiquity. These stars exert a powerful influence on human activities. In weddings, the evening star brings the bride to the groom, separates her from her family, and arouses mixed emotions of delight and fear. In love poetry, the evening star may unite lovers, but they are unavoidably separated by the morning star, herald of the dawn. The cyclical return of the stars is echoed by the tradition of refrains in wedding and love poetry. More commonly found in nuptial poetry, they can indicate allusions to the wedding song in erotic compositions and contain overtones of magic spells, particularly in the Latin tradition.

This chapter explores the role of the woman addressee in lyric poetry, the most intersubjective and inter-gendered of genres. I look at the ways in which early Italian poets construct their beloveds as agents, rather than passive elements, of poetry: as addressees, respondents, interlocutors, readers, editors, and commissioners. After an analysis of the figure of the incipitarian ‘Donna’ of many early poems, I explore the vocal figure of the woman-as-critic, and the ways in which she is ventriloquized by the male poet to give voice to a ‘more earnest’ outlook on courtly poetry. I then move on to Dante’s serial stagings of the invention of women interlocutors in the Vita Nuova, and explore them as part of Dante’s engaging reinvention of the ‘mixed vernacular audience’ of courtly poetry.

Feminist struggles for better jobs and rights at work shaped women’s labor history, a project that proclaimed that the history of work and workers was incomplete without understanding the relationship between unpaid domestic labor and employment. Despite the uneven trajectory of women’s labor in a diverse nation, three major themes characterize the history of gender, work, and capitalist development. First, the persistent power of gender on the structure of work meant that employers and policymakers classified women’s labor as unskilled, supplemental, and an extension of women’s “natural” roles as wives and mothers. Second, women’s calls for dignity and improved wages and working conditions included ethnic associations, women’s clubs, and mixed-sex and women-only unions. Third, state policies offered some women protection but made few strides toward equity, which would require acknowledging women’s differential family responsibilities and establishing decent standards for all workers, including those employed in households and in agriculture.

African Americans played pivotal roles in the adoptions of Korean black children in the first two decades following the Korean War. Beginning with the efforts of black soldiers who devised short-term and long-term strategies to aid Korean children displaced or orphaned by the war, African Americans developed a race-conscious approach to their rescue of Korean black children. However, the families that adopted and the families that attempted to adopt Korean black children faced challenges because racial inequality influenced both US and transnational adoption policies. The child welfare professionals, nonprofessionals, and adoptive families that endeavored to transform adoption policies and practices to increase African Americans’ adoptions had inconsistent results. Some were able to transform standards that had upheld rigid ideas about adoptive couples’ performance of the gender roles associated with the nuclear family. Some demonstrated the benefits of interracial families and interracial communities for mixed-race Korean children. Both Cold War anxieties and civil rights ideals made many of these changes possible. Paradoxically, the rhetoric and ideals of Cold War civil rights also facilitated the expansion of transracial and transnational adoptions involving white couples and nonwhite children in the United States and abroad.

Adopting for God focuses on the role of adoption evangelists in the transnational adoption movement between the United States and East Asia. It argues that both evangelical and ecumenical Christians challenged Americans to redefine traditional familial values and rethink race matters. Evangelical social awareness, ecumenical missionaries’ active anti-racist propaganda, and the latter’s increasing interest in global friendship all contributed to the inauguration and spread of transnational adoptions from East Asia. By challenging the perspective that equates missionary humanitarianism with unmitigated cultural imperialism, this book offers a more complete and nuanced picture of the rise of an important twentieth-century movement. Adopting for God adds to the growing body of literature about how missionary cosmopolitanism changed America by underlining the ways adoption evangelists’ campaign for the adoption of mixed-race children challenged American perceptions of race and family.

By examining his writings, speeches, poetry and actions, as well as those of his contemporaries involved with the Liverpool Muslim community, this chapter explores Abdullah Quilliam’s relationship with gender roles and constructs. It considers his creative self-fashioning, for which he drew from both "Eastern" and "Western" influences in order to present a version of British Muslim masculinity characterized by sensitivity, chivalry, reverence for motherhood, and the pursuit of social justice. Quilliam believed that the limited polygamy, or more accurately polygyny, as sanctioned by the Qur’an, which he, in fact, practiced, not only benefited individuals and family life, but also strengthened nation and empire by encouraging population growth and thereby preventing degeneration and decay. In addition, Quilliam’s belief in the benefits of racial and cultural “miscegenation” became an issue of no small importance during a time when his critics and even officials in the British Home and Foreign Offices expressed concern that his willingness to perform “mixed marriages” posed a threat to national security.

Orwell had mixed views on happiness. He cast it as the fundamental goal of socialism, but he also denied that socialism had anything to do with happiness. This chapter studies the grounds for such ambivalence. The misgivings stemmed in part from the basic psychology of happiness—in Orwell’s mind, at least, it often appeared to be too subjective, too ephemeral, and too contingent to serve as a viable public end. He believed, moreover, that its pursuit was self-undermining: the best means of eroding happiness was to make it the be-all and end-all of everything. Orwell also worried that happiness was incompatible with virtue. The chapter explores his moral and political criticisms of hedonism, but it also considers his conviction that pleasure had a key role to play in the good life. How these theories may have shaped his own colourful life is the concluding concern of the chapter.

This article reviews comparative research on electoral systems and voting behavior, identifying analytical gaps in the tactical voting literature. It starts by examining the core assumptions underpinning the classic approach to tactical voting. It then displays some empirical data about the estimates of this behavior reported in the literature. Contrasting experiences of theoretical and methodological issues in majoritarian and non-majoritarian systems are discussed. Focusing on some difficulties in the application of the “avoiding wasted vote” motivations under PR and mixed-member rules, the article furthers the consolidation of research on tactical voting beyond FPTP systems. The last section suggests that future scholarship in this field should move beyond the “wasted vote” approach to tactical voting and distinguish between instrumental and expressive motivations, consider the long-term consequences of tactical voting, and stress the endogenous nature of tactical voting and the role of parties and media in spreading it.

After the defeat of the PRI’s presidential candidate in 2000, the party experienced several dangerous trends: politicians began to leave the party in greater numbers and the party continued to lose gubernatorial and mayoral elections where it had never been defeated. The two strongest political factions battled over the future of the party and the takeover of the national party office. Yet, the PRI did not suffer terrible fractures and voters did not desert the label. Political institutions play a critical role in explaining why the PRI survived the difficult transition to democracy. Federalism promotes strong state political arenas; thus, the party’s governors became one of the important bases of party survival. The nation’s unique set of electoral rules—the mixed electoral system, generous public funding for parties, and single-term limits—allowed the national party to remain strong, while the governors minded the municipal and state political arenas.

The final chapter applies the argument based on the Mexican experience to other authoritarian regimes with strong parties that transitioned to democracy: Kenya and Taiwan. Kenya African National Union (KANU) practically disappeared because electoral rules allowed politicians to win elections without strong labels. In Taiwan, the Kuomintang survived and returned to power after two terms out of executive power, in large part because its divisions did not lead to fragmentation and because voters continued to support the label. Thus, the work’s argument: that party leaders must learn to garner electoral victories under democratic circumstances while avoiding the pressures to fragment, holds. Federalism, the mixed-member electoral system, and generous party financing all play a role in determining how electoral competition creates winners and losers within the party organization. These institutions also reduce the impact of the electoral opening on the party’s tendency to fragment.

From the New Deal era through the Great Society the U.S. welfare state underwent a period of expansion, but from the mid-1970s onward the ideas underpinning welfare-state growth came under attack from conservative commentators and political actors. In addition, the assumption that the resources were available to finance further expansion of the state’s social welfare role was challenged. This essay looks at what happened to foster this mood of doubt about the benefits of the welfare state. In addition it asks whether there was significant retrenchment of welfare-state programs. The essay argues that the story is a mixed one. Some welfare programs were scaled back but others survived and were even incrementally expanded. If, however, one function of the welfare state is to reduce the inequality that arises from market outcomes, then U.S. social policy performed that task with diminishing effectiveness in the decades after 1970.

This chapter draws upon books, articles, podcasts, TED talks, and other sources to demonstrate how these new applications of mindfulness are touted to enhance the sex act, delivering greater pleasure or effectively managing dysfunction. Key concepts include analysis of the economics involved in the appropriation of Buddhist practices, the role of gender in the “secular” use of meditation (almost all books recommend mindful sex for women, but few focus on men), the mixed Asian and Western frameworks for understanding the body and the meaning of sex, and the alternate uses to which elements of Buddhism may be put in different cultural settings. A specific genre of the use of meditation serves as a means to explore secular developments that draw upon Buddhist sources in a sometimes uneasy relationship.

This chapter examines the principle of parsimony (PP) as it applies to the sentencing of multiple offenders. It first explains what the PP means and challenges its basic assumptions as an independent, substantive sentencing principle. It then recasts the PP as a second-order principle, that is, as a principle designed to help us better ensure that the traditional aims of sentencing are more fully realized. It also distinguishes crime reduction and retributivism versions of the PP as a second-order principle and considers how they might be integrated into a mixed theory of sentencing. Finally, it explores whether and to what extent the PP as a second-order principle is useful in thinking about multiple-offense sentencing. It argues that the PP might play a role in determining sentence ranges for crime types, as well as in formulating broader penal and social policies.

Dazzle camouflage is a putative anti-predator adaptation that works to reduce predation by camouflaging movement itself, comprising coloration that interferes with predator perception of prey speed and trajectory. Accurately estimating speed and trajectory is essential for any predator that needs to know where its prey is likely to be in the near future so that it can position itself to intercept. The dazzle hypothesis is that prey coloration can interfere with these judgements. Experimental support for dazzle camouflage is currently very mixed, and we are not yet clear whether dazzle effects occur in natural systems. Here we first discuss illustrative examples of putative disruptive effects in biological and military design. Then we identify where firm and less firm conclusions can be made on the role of pattern contrast, pattern orientation, and internal object motion, before moving on to consider the evolution and ecology of dazzle camouflage.
