Abstract Robert Frost and Jesse Stuart are both known as regional artists.In fact, Frost’s use of his New England region was pointed out to Stuart as a model by a literary mentor at Vanderbilt shortly after the publication of the Southern Agrarian manifesto I’ll Take My Stand. Indeed, there are many similarities between the two men: both were farmers and nature writers, teachers and educators, and above all, regional writers who captured the flora and fauna and character of their respective regions.Despite their different regions, both men take an honest and authentic look at the unsettling and sometimes cruel ironies of nature and the human condition: the appearance of rustic simplicity that the Yankee and the Appalachian artist tease us into taking at face value nevertheless provokes the Truth of deep probing into the meaning of life. As successful regional artists, Appalachian Stuart and New England Frost claim their place not only in geography, but more importantly, in American literary tradition as each one uses his intimate knowledge of place and character to spin a wonderfully entertaining read, whether it be in prose or verse. Most similar when they are linked by the jarring effect of final lines (Frost) and the ironic disjunction between content and title (Stuart), both writers ultimately, often surprisingly, strike the reader with the hard edge of universal truth about what it means to be human.

This essay argues that Stuart fairy poetry, rooted in Shakespeare's innovative representation of tiny, consumeristic fairies, attempts to indigenize new forms of elite material display. Rather than the fairies of popular tradition or courtly mythography, Stuart poets depict miniaturized Mabs and Oberons who are notable for their wardrobes, banquets, coaches, and the decor of their palaces. The fairy poetry of William Browne, Michael Drayton, and Robert Herrick must be interpreted not as playful escapism, but as a self-consciously politicized literary mode which reveals these writers’ deep ambivalence toward elite culture — and toward their own artistic role within that culture.

John Cusacke, an Irish gentleman who was educated on the continent and worked on the fringes of the court of wards, constructed a striking re-reading of kingship, law, colonial government, and parliament in a series of tracts written between 1615 and 1647. His writings provide insight both into seventeenth-century colonial theory and early Stuart political thought. Shaped in the cauldron of Irish land struggles and continental political thought, Cusacke rejected Old English constitutionalism, arguing instead that Ireland was a colonial dependency of England. Further, to gain royal favour for various projects, Cusacke recast contemporary conceptions of parliament and common law, rejecting the centrality of custom, insisting that the king was the law maker and vigorously attacking Sir Edward Coke. Cusacke's writings reached the libraries of James I and Charles I, and their officials Sir Robert Naunton, master of the court of wards, and attorney-general Sir Robert Bankes. Cusacke's tracts graphically demonstrate the existence of an absolutist political discourse in early Stuart Britain applied not to issues of theology or of international law but to domestic politics.

This study reads the Semitic discourse in five modern Irish novels – Francis Stuart's Black List Section H (1971), Robert MacLiam Wilson's Manfred's Pain (1992), Robert Welch's Groundwork (1997), Jennifer Johnston's This is Not a Novel (2002), and John Banville's Shroud (2002) – for what it tells us about the cultural identity of modern Ireland, and for what it reveals of the psychohistory, and even the psychopathology, of Irishness hidden in these representations. The span of five novels allows some demonstration, first, of the ambivalence, rather than overt hostility or unqualified identification, which characterises this writing; and, second, of the striking variety and heterogeneity in the representation of ‘the Jew’ in contemporary Irish writing. Such unpredictability and contradictoriness in the construction of Jewish racial difference challenges or threatens both the national discourse which seeks to exert control over the unmanageable ‘reality’ of Ireland in terms of fixity, certainty, centredness, homogeneity, and the transcendent discourse of liberal universalism. That is, these novelists, in demonstrating the impossibility of fixing the indeterminate Jew as one thing or the other, reflect a more general crisis of representation, not only for the nation (Welch, Johnston), and the individual (Wilson, Stuart), but for epistemology itself (Banville).

General Cadogan, who had succeeded the Duke of Marlborough as commander-in-chief of the Army asked for an increase of 10,000 men in the armed forces, after the discovery of the Atterbury Plot in 1722. Robert Walpole knew that additional taxation for the standing army was unpopular in Parliament and in the country at large. He, therefore, decided to impose a tax of £100,000 on Catholics to pay for it. This was over and above the double land tax which Catholics and Protestant Nonjurors had paid since 1689. The land tax at the time stood at 4s in the pound. The Atterbury Plot was a Tory Anglican plot, not a Catholic plot, as Walpole well knew. Walpole suspected, probably rightly, that Catholics were generous in sending money to the Stuart Court in Rome. He could not prove it and neither can we for the receipts of money in the Stuart papers in Windsor Castle do not reveal the names of the donors.

Robert Albert Stuart, the High Sheriff of Charlotte County, deserves credit for establishing the black granite monument industry in New Brunswick. In the late 19th to early 20th centuries, he opened three quarries in mafic plutonic rocks in the vicinity of the Chickahominy Mountain, north of St. Andrews: the Bocabec black granite quarry (1893), the Steen Lake black granite quarry (1895), and the Glenelg porphyry quarry (1906). Much of the information in brief articles in local newspapers lacks sufficient detail to gain a full understanding of the historical development of these quarries. To obtain a clearer timeline for production of stone from the quarries, the rock type in each was examined and compared to black granite monuments in nearby cemeteries known to be sourced from these specific quarries. Previous investigations did not entirely rule out the possibility that the Stuart quarries may have been a source for the headstones placed in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to mark the graves of some of those who were lost when the Titanic sank in 1912. Our detailed analysis of rock textures and production histories leads us to conclude that none of the Stuart quarries could have been a source for the Titanic headstones and supports the previous assessment that they came from Charles Hanson quarry.

Abstract: In 1874, Prannath Dutta published the satirical periodical Basantak to undermine obscenity laws and caricature the rational, militant masculinity of British administrators by depicting them as venal and incompetent to administer British India. Basantak 's farces draw on various Indian literary and visual forms and genres. The jester-like omniscient narrator called Basantak—modeled after the cultivated iconoclast, Mr. Punch—displays an all-consuming cynicism. This article examines various imagetextual narratives, caricatures, and cartoons of British officials Stuart Hogg, Richard Temple, and Robert Phayre through which Basantak lampoons not only the childlike Englishmen but also their inane laws.

This article offers a novel interpretation of Robert Filmer’s political thought. I argue that, rather than identifying kings with biological fathers, Filmer bases his theory on a distinctive conception of fatherhood as a right of dominium and on a distinction between ordinary and ‘supreme’ fatherhood. I show that he only fully develops this theory in the second manuscript version of Patriarcha through an engagement with Grotius and Selden and that these ideas distinguish him from other early Stuart patriarchal thinkers. The article also analyses how his views on tyranny, usurpation, and forms of government evolve in relevant ways over time, identifying a shift in his position from a de facto theory of authority to a de facto theory of obedience.

Makalah ini merupakan ringkasan penelitian yang dilakukan penulis bersama dua rekan lain sekitar tahun 2009. Meskipun demikian isu literasi media dan pemberdayaan audiens rasanya masih relevan, apalagi melihat trend tayangan televisi dan film saat ini yang sedikit sekali cocok untuk anak-anak. Subyek penelitian adalah seorang siswi SD berusia 11 tahun High School Musical (HSM). Namun berbeda dengan teman-temannya, Alia tidak ikut tergila-gila mengumpulkan pernak-pernik bertema HSM, tidak pula ikut sampai Metode dan strategi dalam penelitian yang melandasi penulisan makalah ini adalah studi kasus intrinsik dari Robert E. Stake. Pemilihan informan dilakukan secara purposif, selaras dengan karakter model studi kasus yang digunakan. Peneliti melihat fenomena melalui sudut pandang paradigma konstruktivis. Sementara itu teori utama yang menjadi pisau analisis adalah teori resepsi model encoding-decoding dari Stuart Hall. Selain berisi ringkasan penelitian, penulis menambahkan data yang berkenaan dengan peran mediasi orang tua dalam membentuk resistensi anak terhadap tayangan media, khususnya televisi. Melalui makalah ini kita dapat melihat bagaimana model encoding-decoding Stuart Hall digunakan untuk menganalisis resepsi aktif tayangan film dan bagaimana faktor ekstrateks berperan dalam penentuan posisi pembacaan subyek terhadap isi teks. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa faktor ekstrateks disekitar Alia menghasilkan konsep diri yang kuat, keterbukaan pikiran, dan toleransi terhadap perbedaan, sehingga Alia dapat menempatkan diri sebagai pembaca aktif. Temuan penelitian diharapkan dapat bermanfaat sebagai panduan untuk mereplikasi faktor ekstrateks yang dibutuhkan dalam rangka membentuk perilaku kritis anak-anak ketika mengonsumsi media. Tentu saja ini penting mengingat televisi dan film sebagai bagian dari media massa merupakan perangkat yang cukup vital bagi penyebarluasan nilai-nilai budaya dan anak-anak sering kali dianggap sangat rentan terhadap pengaruh televisi dan film. A identidade surgiu como uma categoria que definiria o lugar psicossocial das pessoas pela adaptação a uma estrutura sociolaboral hegemônica predefinida (outro generalizado). Com as mudanças gradativas da contemporaneidade geradoras de estruturas sociolaborais mais instáveis e flexíveis (outros generalizados), a identidade deixou de ser somente um processo de adaptação para se tornar um processo de construção contínua. Tomando como base a dimensão do trabalho, o presente ensaio teórico teve como objetivo organizar as alternativas atuais de construções identitárias por aproximações conceituais possíveis entre cinco pensadores (Alain Touraine, Claude Dubar, Manuel Castells, Robert Castel e Stuart Hall), resultando em quatro categorias: nostalgia, fechamento, instrumentalidade e possibilidade. Concluindo, o momento atual é de transição, pois estruturaria dois caminhos identitários distintos: um baseado num processo mais definido e estável de adaptação (categorias do fechamento e da nostalgia) e outro baseado num processo de construção relacional contínua (categorias da possibilidade e da instrumentalidade).

The subject of his article reflects what Robert Crawford has called ‘a growing wariness of notions of an essentialist Scotland’ (1994, p. 57). The article has been written partly as a contribution to the critique of ‘essentialist’ notions of national identity in gerneral and ‘Scottishness’ in particular. I share the concern of Stuart Hall (1990; 1995) and others (Massey 1991; Rose 1995) to challenge ideas which reproduce notions of the ‘boundedness’ or ‘purity’ of territorial and national identities; whilst recognising that such identities are, by definition, only likely to change slowly (Therborn 1995). My approach to the analysis of national identity is to try to follow the ‘social construction of reality’ thinking which informs much current writing on the relationships between ethnicity, place and identity (Jackson and Penrose 1993). Abstract: This paper reviews the debate between William Thompson and John Stuart Mill that happened at the London Co-operative Society in 1825 over the advantages of cooperation as against free competition. The general context of the controversy is provided by some historical background on British debating tradition within the working people. Next, the philosophical doctrines of Jeremy Bentham and Robert Owen are outlined as the main forces of social change in the 1820s, both of which would collide during the faceoff at the Co-operative Society. Following that, we examine William Thompson’s ideas on income distribution and the moral evils of competition. Lastly, we present John Mill’s approach to these same issues, showing that his basic conception of individual liberty did not change throughout his life, despite his late agreement with the economic benefits of cooperation. The final remarks stress the originality of the theoretical elements put forth in the debate.

AbstractThis paper affords a complete analysis of the construction of the original Northampton (later Northumberland) House in the Strand (demolished in 1874), which has never been fully investigated. It begins with an examination of the little-known architectural patronage of its builder, Lord Henry Howard, 1st Earl of Northampton from 1603, one of the most interesting figures of the early Stuart era. With reference to the building of the contemporary Salisbury House by Sir Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, the only other Strand palace to be built in the early seventeenth century, textual and visual evidence are closely investigated. A rediscovered elevational drawing of the original front of Northampton House is also discussed. By associating it with other sources, such as the first inventory of the house (transcribed in the Appendix), the inside and outside of Northampton House as Henry Howard left it in 1614 are re-configured for the first time.

MUCH recent research has examined Catholicism in early Stuart England and some has discussed the contribution of anti-Catholicism to the outbreak of the Civil War—but how well-founded were the fears underlying the rhetoric which surfaced in parliament? This paper1 addresses one aspect of that question by looking at certain financial features of Catholic non-conformity (as demonstrated by absence from Anglican services and/or refusal of the oath of allegiance) in the first half of James I’s reign, chiefly between 1606 and 1612. The significance of this period is that it begins just after the attempt to blow up king and parliament and ends with the death of Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury who, during his term of office as Lord Treasurer from 1608 onwards, was grappling with an intractable royal indebtedness which he managed to curtail but not to cure and whose own effectiveness waned following the failure of the Great Contract in 1610.2

Abstract The Emerald site, also known as the Emerald Acropolis, was an early Mississippian pilgrimage center key to Cahokia’s development. This paper presents the hitherto unpublished results of two archaeological projects conducted at the site, one led by Howard Winters and Stuart Struever in 1961 and the other by Robert Hall in 1964. These investigations produced the most comprehensive information on Emerald’s Moorehead phase (1200–1300 CE) occupation, during which two of its mounds were capped, a secondary mound was constructed on the central mound, and a mound-top structure was erected on this secondary mound. Similar activities took place throughout the region during the thirteenth century, a time marked by dramatic social, political, and religious change in Greater Cahokia. Based on these data, we argue that people returned to Emerald to memorialize or draw on the powers inherent there and thus reincorporate this place into the newly imagined thirteenth century Cahokian world.

O objetivo deste trabalho, além de diagnosticar o perfil de comportamento do empreendedor, buscou nos demais pormenores desenvolveres, abordar as origens e as concepções iniciais do empreendedorismo e suas vertentes. Identificar as percepções de pensadores importantes para o empreendedorismo e a economia: David McClelland, Joseph Alois Schumpeter, Peter Drucker, Adam Smith, Idalberto Chiaventato, Thomas Robert Malthus, Richard Cantillon, Jean Baptiste-Say, e Jean Stuart Mill. A metodologia utilizada neste artigo possui, método dedutivo, abordagem qualitativa e o instrumento utilizado para a pesquisa foi a metodologia de Pôncio (2017), adaptado de McClelland. Além disso, a metodologia foi baseada em literaturas de autores e artigos teóricos de caráter científico. Obteve-se, por meio deste artigo, o perfil de comportamento do empreendedor, se é motivado por realizações, por afiliação ou poder.

At the time of his death, in 1704, the library of John Locke held 269 volumes of philosophy—but 275 volumes of geography and travel. Works of geography drew on discoveries related in books of travel, but Locke did nevertheless see them as distinct genres. In both, his holdings were extensive. He owned several volumes of maps; the great recent surveys of Africa, America, and Japan printed by John Ogilby; and the descriptions of the world by Abbot, Purchas, Morden, and Moll. It was in books of travel, though, of which Locke owned 195, where his holdings were most remarkable. He owned the massive collections of Ramusio (in Italian), de Bry (in Latin), Thévenot (in French), and Hakluyt and Purchas (in English). He owned accounts of the well-known voy- ages of Hariot to Virginia, de Léry to Brazil, Sandys to the Ottoman Empire, Gage to the West Indies, and Choisy to Siam. He owned as well accounts of dozens of more minor voyages, such as those of Blount to the Levant, Monconys to Syria, Ray to the Continent, Josselyn to New England, and Fryke to the East Indies. No student of Locke’s library has failed to remark upon what Harrison and Laslett, its modern editors, have called its ‘great strength’ in these areas. This is to understate the matter, for it seems that among libraries of its size in late Stuart England, only the library of Robert Hooke (and perhaps that of Robert Boyle) rivalled Locke’s in works of geography and travel.
