This chapter explores the cultural work that feminist critics performed in “inventing” the genre of the woman's film, and how genre impacts on feminist cinema practices in the current postmodern moment. It argues first that historically, genre was important in providing a useful pathway through which feminist film theorists could assert a critical position vis-à-vis dominant cinematic and critical strategies. That is, feminist critics used genre as a concept to invent a new genre—the women's picture or woman's film—thereby drawing attention to aspects of Hollywood melodrama that had been neglected by (largely male) critics. Secondly, through the examples Sister My Sister (Nancy Meckler, 1994) and Memsahib Rita (Pratibha Parmar, 1994), the chapter shows how some female directors have drawn on traditional Hollywood genres for feminist ends.

An examination of the symbiotic relationship that existed between the Hollywood film community and horse racing, primarily between 1930 and 1960, Hollywood at the Races explores the extraordinary participation of producers, directors, and actors in the sport of kings. All three of Southern California’s major racetracks were founded in part or in whole by Hollywood luminaries: Hal Roach was cofounder of SantaAnita; Bing Crosby founded Del Mar with help from Pat O’Brien; and the Warner brother founded Hollywood Park with assistance from dozens of people in the film community. Moreover, people like Crosby, Betty Grable, Mervyn LeRoy, and Don Ameche owned racehorses, while MGM’s chief of production, Louis B. Mayer, was one of the nation’s leading owner-breeders. Racing also had an interest in Hollywood, as evidenced by the exploits of breeder-owner Jock Whitney, who helped finance David O. Selznick’s productions of GonewiththeWind and Rebecca. A horse owned by Rita Hayworth (aka the Princess Aly Khan) nearly won Europe’smost important race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and screenwriter- producer Gene Markey became the co-owner of Calumet Farm when he married his fourth wife.During this period, Hollywood produced at least 120 racing-themed films, among them A Day at the Races, National Velvet, and Thoroughbreds Don’t Cry. Thelast two starred Mickey Rooney, an inveterate horseplayer who, like Chico Marx and Jimmy Durante, lost a fortune at the track.The book concludes with an analysis of the twin declines of racing and cinema in America in recent decades.

With this book, Rachel Afi Quinn makes the case for a transnational feminist cultural studies lens of analysis and an ethnographic approach to the study of race, gender, and visual culture in the Dominican Republic. This book provides a new window into contemporary life in Santo Domingo through which surrealist cultural productions reflect the social climate. Quinn theorizes the ways that the racial meaning of Dominican women’s mixed-race bodies “see/saw” in the viewing moment, as they are read visually in relation to others and informed by particular narratives of identity. Drawing on some forty interviews conducted by the author, this text centers these voices as it reveals the ways that the mixed-race bodies of Dominican women and girls signify within a racial schema tied to an economy in which they are commodified. Queer identities and fluid sexualities intersect with racial ambiguity and Dominican whiteness, Quinn argues, while incorporating public art, digital images, and Dominican film and music videos that are circulated transnationally, including performances by Rita Indiana Hernández and Michelle Rodriguez. Numerous other works by Dominican women artists and activists including print and online publications, documented live performances, photographic images, and social media discourse compose this text. Transnational political organizing is also considered here as part of a legacy of Dominican feminist activism against patriarchal oppression

Jayne Mansfield (1933−1967) was driven not just to be an actress but to be a star. One of the most influential sex symbols of her time, she was known for her platinum blonde hair, hourglass figure, outrageously low necklines, and flamboyant lifestyle. She capitalized on that popularity through in-person and TV appearances, nightclub appearances, and stage productions. Her larger-than-life life ended sadly when she passed away at age thirty-four in a car accident. Golden looks beyond Mansfield's flashy public image and tragic death to fully explore her life and legacy. She discusses Mansfield's childhood, her many loves -- including her famous on-again, off-again relationship with Miklós "Mickey" Hargitay -- her struggles with alcohol, and her sometimes tumultuous family relationships. She also considers Mansfield's enduring contributions to American popular culture and celebrity culture. This funny, engaging biography offers a nuanced portrait of a fascinating woman who loved every minute of life and lived each one to the fullest.

Table Lands: Food in Children's Literature surveys food’s function in children’s texts, showing how the socio-cultural contexts of food reveal children’s agency through examining texts that vary from historical to contemporary, non-canonical to classics, the Anglo-American to multicultural traditions, including a variety of genres, formats, and audiences: realism, fantasy, cookbooks, picture books, chapter books, YA novels, and film. The first chapter tracks children’s cookbooks over 150 years to show how adults’ expectations change based on shifting ideologies of child capability. Subsequent chapters survey canonical authors. Social work theory, British rural and urban cultures, and poverty inform the analysis of the foodways that underlie Beatrix Potter’s animal tales. Investigating Jewish immigration and foodways, food manufacturing, and roadside/programmatic architecture reveals Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen as an immigrant Jewish and natively American work. A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh books work as a künstlerroman; Mary Douglas’s semiotic analysis and the history of honey and bees show Pooh as a poet who celebrates food. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books contrast with Louise Erdrich’s Birchbark series: differing foodways showcase competing cultural and environmental values. Começamos o livro com um capítulo que traz um dos maiores desafios do judiciário atualmente: O enorme número de processos que comprometem a rapidez da solução dos litígios judiciais. Esse desafio trouxe ao legislador a necessidade de buscar formas de resolução consensual de conflitos. Em 1996 por meio da lei 9307, denominada lei da arbitragem, o legislador já buscava mecanismos de solução extrajudicial. A reforma do Código de Processo Civil de 2015, também privilegiou essa solução. São Paulo, o estado mais populoso e mais rico do Brasil, nos enriquece com o Capítulo da Doutoranda, Professora e Advogada Valquíria Ortiz Tavares Costa que nos apresenta o enorme desafio de alcançar a cidadania. Em seu APRESENTAÇÃO capítulo intitulado: EDUCAÇÃO EM DIREITOS HUMANOS: CAMINHO PARA A CIDADANIA, ela nos lembra que a cidadania é condição imprescindível para que se forme um elo entre o indivíduo e o Estado, mas o seu exercício só pode ser viabilizado pela educação que municia a pessoa com o conhecimento necessário para lutar pelos seus direitos e cumprir com os seus deveres. Faço coro com seus argumentos, pois a educação é o único caminho que transforma a vida das pessoas e seu meio. Minas Gerais nos presenteia com o trabalho dos mestres em Direito Jefferson Prado Sifuentes e Paulo Henrique Loyola Vianna de Andrade que nos brindam com brilhante viagem que os meandros constitucionais guardam quanto ao aparente conflito de preceitos fundamentais entre a autonomia da vontade e o respeito do estado por essa autonomia frente à obrigação estatal de preservar garantias fundamentais. Por meio do capítulo: AUTONOMIA PRIVADA FRENTE À GARANTIA DE DIREITOS FUNDAMENTAIS E A PERPLEXIDADE DA RENÚNCIA E SEUS LIMITES CONSTITUCIONAIS eles nos esclarecem, afinal, pode um titular de direito, exercê-lo de forma infinita, desmedida? E o estado, pode limitar o direito de renúncia do titular de um direito? A balança, símbolo da justiça não representa apenas a busca do equilíbrio, do justo. Busca principalmente, e sempre ponderar dois direitos em aparente conflito. Nos idos de 1920 Ruy Barbosa já nos ensinava: “A justiça atrasada não é justiça, senão injustiça qualificada e manifesta”, mas foi somente em 2015 que nosso Código de Ritos, abarcou o princípio da razoável duração do processo, já integrado ao mundo jurídico por meio da Emenda Constitucional 45 de 2004. E como enfrentar a questão da dilação devida e natural, que concerne ao próprio rito, a fim de respeitar o princípio do devido processo legal? Os ventos ditatoriais que sopraram por todo o mundo no século passado também chegaram aqui. Feridas foram deixadas e algumas histórias nunca foram esclarecidas. Àqueles que injustamente sofreram registro aqui o meu respeito e o desejo de que encontrem na reparação dos danos sofridos o conforto para a dor vivida. O avião recentemente completou um século de seu primeiro voo e o direito aeronáutico já alça voos bem altos. Transmutado de meio de transporte idílico em arma de guerra, normatizações internacionais se fizeram urgentes. A Doutoranda do Curso de ciências aeroespaciais da Força aérea e professora da academia da Força aérea desde 2010, do Campo Fontenelle, em Pirassununga, interior de São Paulo, Érika Rigotti Furtado, nos apresenta por meio do seu capítulo: AS HIPÓTESES LEGAIS DE EMPREGO DO PODER AÉREO BRASILEIRO E O TRIBUNAL PENAL INTERNACIONAL, como o Direito é indispensável quando está posto um embate entre a soberania nacional, objeto de proteção do Poder aéreo e a defesa da dignidade humana, valor defendido pelo Tribunal Penal Internacional. A recente reforma do código de processo civil (2015) externou uma preocupação há muito existente: o enorme número de processos nos tribunais a espera de julgamento. O Paraná, novamente presente por meio do Mestre e Procurador da Fazenda Nacional Elon Kaleb Ribas Volpi, do Doutor e advogado Albino Gabriel Turbay Junior e de seu colega Fabio Caldas Araújo nos demonstram, por meio de minuciosa pesquisa, realizada em seu capítulo: IRDR E OS REGULAMENTOS DOS TRIBUNAIS REGIONAIS FEDERAIS: IMPORTÂNCIA DA ISONOMIA DAS REGRAS, a importância do instituto do Incidente de Resolução de Demandas Repetitivas e de como ele pode evitar decisões contraditórias e diminuir a morosidade da justiça, mas principalmente investigam como os Tribunais Regionais Federais regulam tão importante tema, defendendo a importância de uma isonomia nas regras. Por fim, do Espírito Santo, apresento-lhes o trabalho desta advogada e servidora pública que subscreve esta apresentação, uma capixaba por hereditariedade e por escolha. O saneamento básico é um dos grandes desafios do nosso país e disso ninguém tem dúvida. Mas como gerir tão delicada questão quando se vive numa Região Metropolitana? Rios que se dividem, lixões que se multiplicam, águas que se cruzam, poderes que ora se repelem, ora convergem.
