The application of the Appel-Vozlinsky theorem on the stability or instability conditions for bifurcation points of conservative elastic systems with a symmetric bifurcation diagram to evaluate restabilization possibility of structures under loads substantially larger than the first critical force. It is shown that restabilization is possible if the first eigenvalue of the Hesse matrix is a continuous alternating function of the load parameter, and the remaining eigenvalues are sign-definite quantities. The examples of the systems with restabilization are given: a high Mises girder and an elastic system composed of compressible rods.

While the literature has characterized balance control during quasi-static and/or dynamic tasks, comparatively few studies have examined relationships across paradigms. This study investigated whether quiet-stance postural steadiness metrics were associated with reactive control parameters (during both stepping and restabilization phases) following a lean-and-release perturbation. A total of 40 older adults participated. Postural steadiness (center of the pressure range, root mean square, velocity, and frequency) was evaluated in “feet together” and “tandem stance” positions. During the reactive control trials, the step length, step width, movement time, and reaction time were measured, in addition to the postural steadiness variables measured during the restabilization phase following the stepping response. Out of 64 comparisons, only 10 moderate correlations were observed between postural steadiness and reactive spatio-temporal stepping parameters (P ≤ .05, r = −.312 to −.534). However, postural steadiness metrics were associated with the center of pressure velocity and frequency during the restabilization phase of the reactive control trials (P ≤ .02, r = .383 to .775 for velocity and P ≤ .01, r = .386 to .550 for frequency). Although some elements of quasi-static center of pressure control demonstrated moderate associations with dynamic stepping responses, relationships were stronger for restabilization phase dynamics after foot-contact. Future work should examine the potential association between restabilization phase control and older adult fall-risk.

Although instabilities and large oscillations are traditionally considered as conditions to be avoided in structures, a new design philosophy based on their exploitation towards the achievement of innovative mechanical features has been initiated in the last decade. In this spirit, instabilities are exploited towards the development of systems that can yield designed responses in the post-critical state. Further, the presence of oscillating constraints may allow for a stabilization of the dynamic response. These subjects entail a rich number of phenomena due to the non-linearity, so that the study of such mechanical systems becomes particularly complex, from both points of view of the mechanical modeling and of the computational tools. Two elastic structures are studied. The first consists of a flexible and extensible rod that is clamped at one end and constrained to slide along a given profile at the other. This feature allows one to study the effect of the axial stiffness of the rod on the tensile buckling of the system and on the compressive restabilization. A very interesting effect is that in a region of parameters double restabilization is found to occur, involving four critical compressive loads. Also, the mechanical system is shown to work as a novel force limiter that does not depend on sacrificial mechanical elements. Further, it is shown that the system can be designed to be multi-stable and suitable for integration in metamaterials. The second analyzed structure is a flexible but inextensible rod that is partially inserted into a movable rigid sliding sleeve which is kept vertical in a gravitational field. The system is analytically solved and numerically and experimentally investigated, when a horizontal sinusoidal input is prescribed at the sliding sleeve. In order to model the system, novel computational tools are developed, implementing the fully nonlinear inextensibility and kinematic constraints. It is shown that the mathematical model of the system agrees with the experimental data. Further, a study of the inclusion of dissipative terms is developed, to show that a steady motion of the rod can be accomplished by tuning the amplitude or the frequency of the sliding sleeve motion, in contrast with the situation in which a complete injection of the rod inside the sleeve occurs. A special discovery is that by slowly decreasing the frequency of the sleeve motion, the length of the rod outside the sleeve can be increased significantly, paving the way to control the rod’s end trajectory through frequency modulation.

Abstract The present paper presents experimental tests investigating flow-induced vibration and possible fluidelastic instability (FEI) in a rotated square geometry tube array. The pitch spacing ratio of approximately P/D = 1.64 is somewhat larger than that found in typical array geometries. Experiments were conducted in water flow. The stability of a single flexible tube as well as multiple flexible tubes was investigated. The tubes were free to vibrate purely in the streamwise direction or the transverse direction relative to the upstream flow. A single flexible tube, in the otherwise rigid tube array, was found to undergo large amplitude vibrations (up to 40% D) in the transverse direction. Tube vibration response PSDs indicated the presence of two frequency components related to vorticity shedding in the array. This potential vorticity-induced-vibrations (VIV) and potential coupling between VIV and FEI is discussed in the paper. Test results for streamwise flow-induced vibrations are also presented. Results in water flow show a possible effect related to VIV at low velocity. At significantly high flow velocity, the tubes are found to fully restabilize. This restabilization after VIV locking has not been previously reported as an unlocking result. The present results suggest that flow-induced vibration of tubes in a rotated square array configuration is significantly more complex than in other geometries, particularly for the streamwise vibration case.
