The study is devoted to improving the quality of life in Siberian medium and small settlements through a range of noise control solutions. Field studies carried out in 2019 and 2020 revealed a problem of noise pollution in these settlements caused by highways cutting through their planning structure and industrial facilities set up in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings. Modern methods of protecting residential buildings against noise were considered and the noise control experiences of historical settlements were reviewed. The consideration of available engineering solutions along with cultural heritage restoration and reconstruction technologies suggested a range of actions to protect residential buildings located in the immediate vicinity of highways against noise.

A publication by G.N. Potanin, a well-known researcher of Siberia and, a prominent representative of Siberian regionalism is studied in the collection “Siberia, its current state and needs”, published in 1908 from the architectural view point. The purpose of this article is to analyze the architectural factor and comments from the contemporary of the urban planning processes in Siberia in the late in the 19th and early 20th centuries, which are interesting for studying the history of architecture in its regional aspect, relevant to the urban planning theory, practice and conservation of the regional architectural heritage. It is shown that G.N. Potanin described the Siberian towns, specifics of their urban construction, special cultural and educational role of public buildings in Siberian conditions of, and residential buildings of urban dwellers. The article presents Potanin‟s opinion on urban development in Tomsk and Irkutsk. Potanin‟s observations associated with the use of solar energy by Siberians in winter time are described including street glazing and a low spacing between large windows on façades and the interiors of residential buildings which experienced a kind of greenhouse effect in winter. The historical architectural materials presented herein are relevant for the modern urban planning theory and practice and can assist in preserving the urban planning heritage of the region. The analysis of Potanin‟s publications related directly to the architectural and town-planning themes, is published for the first time and can be used in the related teaching courses.

The assessment of the ‘quality’ of built heritage is a complex transdisciplinary issue, which both public administrations and real estate developers need to carefully consider when making any interventions. Recent international climate regulations underline that currently around 75% of buildings in the EU are not energy efficient. In Italy, those inefficient buildings are more than 50 years old and, if subjected to retrofit interventions, risk being totally transformed and losing their historical value in favor of a more contemporary use. This work aimed to study the residential heritage of the second half of the 20th century in the real estate market and to understand if, how, and in what measure the building and architectonical qualities are recognized and monetized by buyers. The city of Turin was chosen as a study area, and residential building qualities were analyzed using two quality indicators to perform a GWR on market POIs. The results highlighted that housing historical qualities are not homogeneously recognized by the real estate market, in favor of green ones. This work can help both public and private bodies to identify which ‘invisible’ quality residential buildings are immediately exploitable for enhancement strategies, with more respectful retrofitting interventions and a modern protection policy.

his broad understanding of style as a social and study of distinctiveness has some precedents in sociology, architecture, language, art and many other works which provide a framework that accommodates theories among other semiotic forms. Architectural style is a by-product of the understanding of artifacts that distinguish products or period in to distinct, and consequently, people perceived it as a unique or popular tendency. Glapsides contemporary individual-built area in Famagusta district is characterized by outstanding appearance of architectural styles in a contextual manner within the post-modern cycles. The representation of the diverse architectural styles creates an avenue for reach post-modern settlement that even the environmental values, history and a culture can be read easily. Thus, contemporary residential buildings with stylistic architectural appearances displayed some qualities of classical models as well contained traditional heritage. This research aimed at discussing the significances of architectural styles in contemporary residential buildings of Glapsides in Famagusta district. The paper focused its scopes on single-family residential buildings, with regard to the physical categories of their architectural fashions (façade). It will further explore the general contributions of architectural styles as means of creating contextual continuity, from the neighborhood to the district as a whole. In this research, the significance of architectural style will be evaluated based on their historic references, aesthetics and design characteristics as well as the visual contextual manners in the categories. In order to succeed and achieve this aim, twelve (12) case studies was selected within Glapsides area (region) and it was divided categorically based on their architectural styles. However, based on the selected cases a personal observation, effective site survey studies, and related literatures are the techniques adapted to source supportive data. The paper focused on the physical appearances only, plan scheme and measurement of component will not be discussed.

Abstract This study examines the influence of modernity on residential buildings as a new form of expansion built during the Jordanian Rule (1948–1967) outside the Old City of East Jerusalem. Through investigating a sample of houses, the study shows how building typologies, layouts and architectural characteristics depict and inform reinterpretations and adaptations of modernity. Unlike the modernity that emerged out of the western locus, these buildings do not ignore their vernacular roots but adapt to the Palestinian socio-cultural lifestyle, and at the same time borrow from the aesthetic and ideological characteristics of the modern idiom. Based on architectural documentation and ethnographic research, the analyses show that the peasants (Fallahin) made an important contribution to the adaptive modernity of residential buildings in East Jerusalem. The designs were influenced by some aspects of modernity but were also subject to local and cultural determinants. The study contributes to the literature on ‘other modernities’ outside the west, and to an architectural history that is informed by people’s private and individual experience rather than by those working in the profession. This is considered to be a neglected heritage that this article aims to redress.

With the development of technology mankind seeks to know its past, to preserve all that remains of the ancestors. In all countries of the world there are so-called objects of cultural heritage (hereinafter - OCH), which are valuable from the point of view of history, architecture, culture, and art. In some of them, people still live. As with other housing owners of OCH make transactions, conclude contracts of sale. But one of the most controversial topics, is the question of assessing the value of such housing. The apartment in a monument house cannot cost the same as in a modern house. The question of market value of such objects is voluminous, as it requires considering several factors: maintenance and restoration costs. There is no unified methodology of valuation of houses which are recognized as OCH. But there is no a database for simple search for similar objects. Undoubtedly there are open data of the objects of analogues, but it's not always possible to find the necessary one. As an object of exploitation, OCN has a peculiarity - it does not presuppose demolition. According to the international standards all OCH in the "ideal" representation should be preserved forever. This is the peculiarity of assessment and work with OCH, inside which there is residential real estate. In this regard, special approaches to solving these problems are required. The article offers mechanisms and managerial solutions to create a methodology for the valuation of such objects.

Suleymaniye and Zeyrek areas in the Historical Peninsula containing a combination of the architectural works of different religions, different cultures and communities are two districts which were entitled to be included in UNESCO world heritage list from Istanbul in 1985. Traditional architectural texture in Zeyrek and Suleymaniye among some unique districts of Istanbul, which brings neighborhood-centered lifestyle of Ottoman period in the past to the present, basically consists of wooden houses. Diverging process has affected on these two unique residential areas having their own hierarchical and political characteristics by planned development activities in time and it was forced to sacrifice many works belonging to Ottoman period within the borders. Another modern building obtained as a result of the competition in the Republican Period practically undertakes the task of combining these two estranged areas. Characteristics of the said two protected areas, diverging process and modern heritage acting as a buffer shall be examined in this study.

This chapter examines how, in Nizwa, socioeconomic instabilities and their effects are powerfully shaped by the felt gap between national historical narratives and the utopian aspirations and civic values that are intimately associated with them. Memories of life during the imamate and the violence that followed were managed and contained by the sultanic state through the concrete practices of heritage discursive practices, tourism, and historic preservation acts that made the last physical traces of the imamate and tribal histories meaningful through a national-modernist temporality. But this new sense of time, the history and imagery it conveys, assumes a performative dimension. Among laypeople, the language of heritage becomes a discursive medium and a practical enterprise for economic and political claims making through such ethical principles as social solidarity, generosity, and interpersonal consultation, which are continually undermined by the state's restructuring of the urban fabric of the city. Through tracking people's relationships to the old residential quarters, the fort, and the souq of Nizwa, the chapter considers how this contradictory state of affairs has opened a space for alternative memory practices that invoke the Ibadi Imamate, while acting as a broader critique of the sultanate's governance practices.

It cannot be said that the creative biography of the artist-architect Stefan Narębski (1892–1966) remains a completely unknown page in the history of art, but everything that has been written and published so far about the life and work of Stefan Narębski is only the top of the iceberg which is his complete biography. The author restores many forgotten and unknown facts of this biography, mainly based on the materials of the Archive of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, first of all, the artist’s own notes (“Diaries”), which had never been published before. Discoveries of this kind relate primarily to the childhood and adolescence of Narębski, held in the Caucasus and Vilnius; his participation in the 1905 revolution; his educational and creative activities in Włocławek in the 1920s; his connections with Stephen Batory University; as well as the repressions that he faced both during the years of the Nazi occupation of Lithuania and during the restoration of Soviet power here, in 1944–45. In the artistic heritage of Narębski, a close-up is highlighted by the types of residential buildings developed by him, educational institutions (museum, school, university department), modern churches, projects for the artistic transformation and decoration of public interiors (the residence of the archbishop; town halls in Vilnius and Torun). The theoretical development of the artistic training program for masters of architectural design (design and decoration of interiors), carried out by Narębski, and the practical implementation of this program at the Nicolaus Copernicus University contained an innovative beginning and provided the most important breakthrough of Polish post-war artistic pedagogy towards a modern, progressive methodology. Of great importance is the international aspect of the work of Narębski, whose personal biography is connected not only with Poland and the strongest impulses of Polish patriotism, but also with Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine (with the places where he studied, lived, worked, built and planned the construction of new objects). His contribution to the development of art and artistic pedagogy is subject to measurement on the scale of not only national but also Eastern European culture.

After a half century of ditching, diking, and draining the swamplands of southern Florida, a major effort to undo some of the ecological damage of those activities is now under way. In what is perhaps the largest ecological restoration effort of its kind anywhere, the federal and state governments are buying up large parcels of private land, changing dramatically the timing and quantity of freshwater flows to the huge “river of grass” that comprises the Florida Everglades, and even restoring the meanders and backwaters to the same Kissimmee River that an earlier generation of engineers “improved” by straightening and channelizing so as to eliminate its meanders and backwaters. Hundreds of millions of public dollars will be spent in this effort. If it succeeds, the steady degradation of one of the most biologically diverse and distinctive environments of the United States will be halted, and its recovery will have begun. The wood stork (Mycteria americana), snail kite (Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus), and Florida panther (Felis concolor coryi) are among the endangered species that this effort may ultimately benefit. Several hundred miles to the north, in the sandhills of North Carolina, a more modest but no less noteworthy conservation effort is under way. There, private owners of woodlots, horse farms, resorts, and even residential property are actively managing their longleaf pines to encourage the presence on their own land of another endangered species, the red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis). After a quarter century in which many private landowners came to fear the presence of endangered species on their land, sandhills landowners are now inviting them. The state and federal governments are spending few public dollars in this effort, and its scale is much smaller than that of the Everglades restoration. What drives the novel effort in North Carolina is a creative and flexible use of the provisions of the Endangered Species Act to encourage the sort of positive land stewardship that many landowners are willing to embrace. As the Florida and North Carolina examples illustrate, the challenge of effectively conserving the natural biological diversity of the nation requires the use of a flexible and diverse array of strategies.

The “aging” world implies a rethinking of housing models, to meet the needs of the elderly for physical and mental well-being, independence, social interaction, safety, and accessibility. “Aging in place” is recognized by experts and international literature as a fundamental strategy for maintaining conditions of well-being and reducing public spending on health care. However, often the houses do not have the requirements to easily adapt to the needs that change with aging and possible downsizing of the family unit. For the elderly, maintaining their own home can become unsustainable due to problems of costs, oversizing, physical and perceptual accessibility, and safety. The contribution, taking as a case study the residential building heritage of Turin (Italy), illustrates and critically compares scenarios of adaptive recovery of homes to make them suitable for the needs of the elderly, intending to promote “aging in place” and housing adaptive refurbishment as a sustainable strategy.

A methodology of investigation and diagnosis on the built patrimony of historic centres in seismic areas is presented with the aim of collecting an extensive knowledge on the structural typologies and behaviour of historic masonry buildings. This investigation is also the base for the prevention and/or repair of damages caused by earthquakes. Small historic centres or residential buildings in larger centres have been considered for long time as “minor architecture”, but they are meaningful testimonies of the local cultural heritage and express the evolution of a society and of its cultural identity. The results of the investigation carried out on different Italian historic centers, allowed also a critical review of the reliability of the analytical models and of the effectiveness of the repair techniques applied in the past decades. The guidelines emerging from the research results are here presented. A “minimal” diagnostic investigation program is also suggested, in order to support the designers in their projects and to set up appropriate mathematical models to study the vulnerability of the structures.

The high complexity of the planning and construction task results from the many constraints caused by the tight inner-city situation. The Granfonte district is the oldest part of the town of Leonforte; its loss of attractiveness has led to serious urban imbalances with adverse effects on local people's perception of the district. Indeed, its marginalisation has protected a part of the historical urban fabric from modern and radical transformations and has contributed to preserve its vernacular facies. On the one hand, the increasing abandonment of houses is jeopardising not only the material preservation of the historical fabric, but also the safety of its inhabitants; on the other hand, the ongoing demolitions are often associated with careless operations of significant building transformation or replacement. This rather unsettling scenario highlights the fragility of this heritage and calls for reflection on the future of vernacular architecture. Is it still possible to reinhabit these places, or must we accept their gradual dissolution? What contribution can knowledge of these architectures offer in terms of recovering an affection for historical heritage? The paper presents the main results of the research extended to the whole district and then illustrates the methodological approach for the definition of intervention strategies through the application on a small block considered representative of the typological and constructive characteristics of the place. The project process starts from the knowledge of the geometric and structural configuration of the block, its historical development, and the state of conservation with the aim of understanding its criticalities and potentials. The project outlines two alternative scenarios: the safety measures to accompany the process of becoming a ruin and the recovery of residential use. The two proposals can be conceived a two-step process of the same project, as well as two alternatives to the radical demolitions – currently ongoing – that continue to represent the main response to the challenges of living in this place.

Downstream of the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, the countryside records the flourishing of communities based on agricultural economies that have been facilitated, since the early modern history, by the fertility of the land, the mildness of the climate and the favourable location with respect to the natural routes of communication. The adaptation and dialogue between this territory and man led to the realization of the so-called “masserie”, the articulated rural artefacts, mostly developed on a primitive compositional structure at court, in which residential and working functions seamlessly coexist. The paper discusses the sustainable and bioclimatic solutions for building and running evidence of this volcanic vernacular system, to inquire how the constructive knowledge, based on the awareness of the properties of local materials, has given solutions to various needs. Indeed, the peasants used the different characteristics of the various igneous rocks, exploited to their maximum performance capabilities, to realize rubble masonry, light vaults, outdoor flooring, and even fixed furniture. In the same functional and “green” resource use, the plan layout follows a distribution corresponding to the best use of the sun and its effects on environmental optimization, and the rainwater collection system connects multiple wells to the underground tank whose position, spatial conformation and materials are expertly engineered. The study finally deepens a case study (the masseria of the Duke of Salza) representing the application of local building tradition in terms of construction features and typological aspects, and the evidence of the history and vulnerabilities of the Vesuvian land. In addition, the specificities of the masseria sample allow mastering the functioning of the whole building organism and the quality of the finishes, which demonstrate how, in their formal simplicity, these vernacular “monuments” were soberly embellished and complexly designed.

In 1968, the Housing Commission, Victoria, built a series of high-rise towers in response to an identified metropolitan planning issue: urban sprawl and the outward growth of metropolitan Melbourne. This “solution” precipitated a crisis in urban identity. The construction of the first of a series of these modern high-rise towers at Debney Park Estate, Carlton and Park Towers, South Melbourne displaced significant immigrant communities. This became the impetus for the formation of Residential Associations who perceived this project a major threat to existing cultural values pertaining to social and built heritage. This paper examines the extremely polarising events and the positions of both the Housing Commission and the Residential Associations over the course of fifteen years from 1968. The research is grounded in an historical review of government papers and statements surrounding the social housing towers, as well as scholarly articles, including information gathered by Renate Howe and the Urban Activists Project (UAP, 2003-2004). The historical review contextualises the dramatically vocal and well-publicised positions of the Residential Associations and the Housing Commission by reference to the wider social circumstances and the views of displaced community groups. Looking beyond the drama of the heated debate sparked by this crisis, the paper exposes nuances within the positions, investigates the specifics of the lesser known opinions of displaced residents and seeks to re-evaluate the influence of the towers on the establishment of an inner urban community identity.
