A PhD thesis "on the job" is a bridge between the academic and the economic world. In this thesis, these two worlds came together to provide solutions to Swiss companies that want to create virtual power plants (VPP). In order to be able to tackle the subject, I started the thesis by analysing the legislative aspects that have allowed the development of this technology, where the most important element is the "Winter pack" of the European Commission which define common rules to open the energy market. Then I focused on the explanations of the technical developments for the VPP, which are linked to the developments of the "Smart Grid" concept. The end of the introduction of my thesis is a short view on economic theories, which allows the reader to understand the structure of the financial markets where the VPP valuation is possible. After this introduction, which will enable the readers to become familiar with the subject, there are three scientific articles where I have analysed problems that companies are facing in this sector. The forecasting of energy demand, production, and secondary market prices. The articles have helped to address the issues by providing efficient forecasting methodologies in comparison with the literature; in addition, companies use some of these models. The methodologies to answer these issues come from the world of finance (ARMA, SETAR, Var) and machine learning (LSTM, GRU), but also from contributions from other disciplines such as marketing (MCA) and geostatistics (IWD)

In the field of electricity distribution, some grids are more and more frequently exporters due to the gradual arrival of decentralized generation. Some grid investments are required to allow the evacuation of the power generated. As more and more information about decentralized production are available for the DSO, the question of integrating them into the planning processes arises. From data of energy production, it appears that the current situations tested for sizing the grid are likely to be reached on a several years basis. If consumption or production flexibilities are used, these can be integrated into the planning process. A technical and economic study is needed and methods are proposed to estimate the frequencies of high production and possible dispersion for one or more producers. Simple models of joint distribution are proposed. The practical case of curtailing production has been tested on networks with realistic scenarios of producers arrival. From actual data and previous models, curtailment and reinforcement are compared on a technico-economic basis. A abacus is plotted as a simple decision tool for the DSO. The question of using curtailment to defer or avoid intra-grid investment has also been investigated ; a calculation method of probabilistic load flow is proposed; it gives a quick and accurate estimation of the energy to curtail in order to avoid a constraint

Because of their specific characteristics (externalities, ladder economies, costs set up students), the network industries are natural monopolies. Traditionally, the public monopoly allowed also protecting the public service falling to a government, financially stronger than the private sector while the financial market was non-existent. Currently, the public private partnerships (liberalization) allow compensating for the financial lacks of the State and to establish a harshness of management which is necessary to promote the technical progress. Public-private partnerships thus became the new options of exploitation of network industries. The economic theories of contracts, of competition and of regulation constitute the theoretical centring of the liberalizations. They offer the theoretical tools and the support necessary for the setting up of a well-balanced competition and the definition of an adequate contractual frame between the government and his private partners. The efficiency of the liberalization depends on regulation which is an emanation of the global institutional supervision. In Senegal, the liberalization of electricity and telecommunications sectors and the corresponding institutional changes were begun only from 1996. However, it is possible to make a mid-term analysis to draw up a normative approach of the perspectives in terms of regulation and institutional frame (supervision)

In recent years, the use of electricity routed from batteries of plug-in electric vehicles (BEVs: battery electric vehicles and PHEVs: plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) to the power grid for resale purposes, a concept commonly referred to as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), has been the subject of numerous studies. With manufacturers opting more frequently for lithium-ion batteries in the production of such plug-in electric vehicles, the profitability in terms of resale price of such V2G-produced energy is put into question. Indeed, Li-ion batteries are rather expensive given their lifespan of approximately 1000 charge-discharge cycles. The ultimate purpose of this Master’s essay is to determine a set of principles to allow for the establishment of an equally lucrative and technologically-economic plan regarding the resale of V2G-produced electrical energy as the result of BEVs and PHEVs equipped with Li-ion batteries supplied by grade 1 and 2 bidirectional chargers. In order to successfully accomplish this feat, numerous factors must be taken into consideration: the cost of such batteries and their durability relative to their maximum attainable number of charge-discharge cycles; the return value of bidirectional chargers; the expenses incurred by the power network in purchasing such electricity; the maximum permissible quantity of electric energy that can be exchanged with the electric grid per year. Initially, the topology of a chosen bidirectional charger undergoes a mathematical analysis of its performance output with regard to its overall cost. Subsequently, multiple charge-discharge cycles are conducted on the lithium-ion batteries at varying discharge intensities in order to evaluate the cells’ deterioration. The former results, combined with the development of a formula for the financial break-even point, demonstrates the effects of a bidirectional charger’s expense and performance, along with the degeneration of Li-ion batteries, on the resale price of V2G-produced electrical energy.

Our approach is interdisciplinary by using in turn law, geography, statistics and physics to quantify the wind power resource in Reunion Island, then economics to cost the mining of this deposit and to formulate public policies to support wind power generation. The first part of the thesis assesses the impact of land regulatory framework on the wind power resource defined in terms of installable peak power. This regulatory framework is defined in terms of scenarios depicting the social and environmental challenges associated with wind power generation in Reunion Island. A methodology based on Geographic Information Systems is developed to identify the spatial distribution of installable wind farms and to assess the impact of an evolution of land legal framework in Reunion. The second part of the thesis aims at quantifying the wind power on sites accessible from a regulatory point of view. The thesis presents a methodology to study the joint distribution of horizontal wind speed and direction based on the analysis of its seasonal and daily variations, and identifies the different wind regimes in force in Reunion. The thesis supports the use of Weibull distribution model on ground of probability theory, and provides evidence of superiority of using a mixture of Weibull distributions conditional on wind direction to quantify the wind power resource of an accessible site with respect to the use of the conventional marginal two parameters Weibull model. The thesis also provides a methodology to construct the geographical information regarding ground obstacles necessary for profiling the vertical wind shear profile in Reunion. Then, the thesis proposes two spatial prediction methods to assess the spatial distribution of wind resource allowing its estimation from the observations recorded at the available weather stations, and uses these methods to model the spatial evolution of the wind speed mean and variation coefficient. The last part of the thesis provides a method to cross assess the regulatory public policy and the public subsidy policy for wind power generation through feed-in-tariff schemes. For each regulatory scenario, we identify the wind power plants which are profitable under existing feed-in-tariff schemes. For each regulatory scenario, we also evaluate the level at which the feed-in-tariff must be set to reach public objectives of wind power development in Reunion, which allows to assess the amount of public subsidy needed to achieve these objectives

The development of the neighborhood as a scale of a more sustainable urban development takes part in a period of awareness linked to climate change for which the European Union has implemented an energy transition policy. In this context, the eco-neighborhoods are structured around two key points in terms of energy: energy efficiency and energy supply. Energy efficiency, which encompasses the energy performance of buildings and the control of energy demand, is the spearhead of existing local energy transition policies. In contrast, the low-carbon energy supply does not seem to have reached sufficient maturity to be fully implemented at the neighborhood level. Nevertheless, the analysis of eco-district projects shows the growing interest in the creation of a low carbon energy supply using local resources. This interest reflects, in particular, the willingness of some local actors to reach a degree of energy autonomy. In order to consider the neighborhood as a relevant scale for low-carbon energy supply, it is necessary to analyze the technical-economic and institutional conditions to be implemented. It reveals the need for a paradigm shift in the structuring of energy systems from centralized to decentralized systems. However, this new paradigm is conditioned by the technical and economic maturity of the infrastructures that can be installed in the district and by the ability to find a viable business model making the investment profitable on this scale. For the institutional part, it causes a modification of the relations between the actors using the energetic vectors studied (electricity and heat). The rise of new production profiles with the development of renewable energies and the emergence of new consumer profiles becoming producers, alters the energy value chain and makes it necessary to guarantee the flexibility of energy systems to ensure their correct functioning. To plan a different pathway that these relationships might take, a methodological approach based on the construction of the ideal-type was carried out. It shows the need for a new player, the energy manager, to ensure the proper functioning of the energy systems installed in the neighborhoods

The power system is facing a major shift with the large-scale development of variable renewable energy sources (VRES). This vertical and centralized architecture helped the system to be robust and reliable. However, VRES production is intermittent and less predictable. As a result, the system needs to add more flexibility with new options such as Demand Side Management, storage technologies and VREs curtailment. But renewable energies potentials are unevenly distributed in Europe and, with high shares of VREs, power flows exchanges will increase between specific regions. As a result, the existing transmission grid would face congestions and these flexibility options might not be sufficient to alleviate these bottlenecks. To analyse these impacts, the work carried in this thesis uses the long-term energy model POLES (Prospective Outlook on Long-term Energy Systems) coupled with the new European power sector module EUTGRID (EUropean – Transmission Grid Investment and Dispatch). It includes a detailed transmission grid and more realistic power flows with a DC-OPF. A grid investment mechanism is also incorporated to determine the grid investments based on nodal prices. This new coupling permits to get a dynamic evolution of the transmission grid. The role of the transmission grid is being assessed and compared with other flexibility options. The grid investments increase largely with important development of VRES while other flexibility options cannot completely replace them. Finally, an exploratory work is being carried with the introduction of generic distribution grids (urban, semi-urban and urban) in EUTGRID. The results show that the reinforcements are slightly delayed with a greater use of back-up technologies which increases the total emissions

Offshore wind power is quickly developing. Its cost-effectiveness, measured with the LCOE (Levelized cost of Energy) has not reached the one of onshore wind power yet. The cost of electrical connection impacts this cost-effectiveness. Depending on the distance to the onshore grid, many possibilities of architectures and associated technologies can be considered for this connection network (AC, DC etc.). The goal of this research is to provide a decision support framework for the assessment and the planning of architectures for electrical connecting networks. The architecture assessment relies on the calculations of the annual energy dissipated through the network, of the investment costs and of the annual energy curtailed due to the network unavailability. To compute these quantities, models and methods are proposed. It appears that to compare architectures, these must be have near optimal designs? Thus, a formulation of the electrical network design optimization is proposed. The formulation is generic in regard to the various architectures which are considered. A quick heuristic solving approach which gives near optimal solutions is proposed and implemented. The decision support framework makes it possible the design and the assessment of an architecture and is applied to two very different architectures. Finally, a probabilistic analytical method is proposed to take into account the models uncertainties and to study their propagation to the decision criteria
