Although ethnography has been a methodology used for years by anthropologists and sociologists, few researchers have entered the homes of children for extended periods of time in order to observe childhood and childrearing practices. The methodology discussed in this article notably permits the researcher to observe child socialization among family members first-hand. Based on seven-months of ethnographic observations among four families from differing social backgrounds in the Ile-de-France region of France, the article discusses how this recorded participant ethnography was set up. The article shows that the researcher held different roles in the families and that these roles varied according to social milieu. Through first analyzing the conditions of these observations among the families, the article provides empirical evidence of the social differentiation of children's daily lives.

In this article, the author reflects on how complementing an interview-based methodological approach with participation may be conducive to creating nuanced knowledges about processes of identification, belonging and marginalization. The thoughts he elaborates on emerge from two experiences of fieldwork conducted with gender and sexual minority migrants in the UK and France. He dwells on the uses that social researchers make of some well-established methods when doing research fieldwork: participant observation, researcher’s distance, and positionality. In so doing, the author activates the queer signifier to help us think through how the words researchers use, and where they are situated, influence their sensibilities as investigators of the social.

This paper presents the findings of a survey on popularization activities by 1700 scientists in Argentina. The tool used for this research was a questionnaire containing 21 questions on discipline, age, status in hierarchy, intensity of popularization activity, motives, difficulties and opinions on public issues and science policy. Our analysis of the data shows that patterns of public popularization in Argentina do not substantially differ from those found in two advanced countries, namely France and the United Kingdom. This situation contrasts with the strong differences found in research practices in “central” and “peripheral” countries.

The paper focuses on the rather pressing topic in France for the last decades — the spread of radical Islamism, in its most dangerous form for society — extremism. The author examines the main ways of spreading radical Islamism on the basis of French research institutes’ reports, as well as academic works of French authors studying this topic. Special attention is paid to correctional institutions where radical Islamic and jihadist ideas are most developed. In this regard, the analysis of prison chaplains and their work becomes important for understanding the radicalization features of French Muslims.

Without seeking to be exhaustive, this paper offers an overview of the different ways in which workers’ autobiographies have been analysed in France in the human sciences. In the first phase, a social and political approach was dominant. Through workers’ autobiographies written in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, researchers have attempted to grasp the relationship to politics, and especially in the twentieth century the acceptance or rejection of the communist model in the reconstruction of their political and trade union trajectories. At the same time, in a cultural approach, they have tried to understand the educational and literary influences which marked these self-taught workers who, unusually in the workers’ world, crossed over from practices of reading to practices of writing. Over the last ten years, workers’ autobiographies have become sources particularly used in the framework of labour history and workers’ history. Indeed they make it possible to grasp how men and women articulate their working conditions: the atmosphere in the workshop, gestures in work and relations between the body and the work, perception of noises and smells, relationships with hierarchy and trade-unions. These autobiographies can be considered as constituting real “political acts” which contribute to class struggle. Finally, at the intersection of anthropological researches about “ordinary writings” and literary studies about the writing of work and writing at work, they pose a question about the means and the meaning of writing experiences by paying more attention to the form of the writings and to the workers’ literary ambitions, which are often revealed in interviews.

The article deals with the current state of the French emigration from France. It specifies the definition of this category of persons, in particular, the possibility of considering them “the French Diaspora”. It is emphasized that the distinctive feature of the French presence abroad is a developed network of cultural and educational institutions, “export” of the image of “brilliant France”, certain cultural and ideological values, lifestyle, “the art of living in French”, French products. Statistics on the number of French expatriates abroad and their distribution by country are provided. The reasons for moving of French people abroad are considered in detail: economic, professional, family. There are analyzed the features of “educational”, “professional” emigration, in particular to the USA. The characteristics of the “typical” French expatriate and his living conditions outside France are given. There are considered the measures that could contribute to the return of French researchers and young specialists to their homeland and get them interested in their work in France. First of all, this refers to formation of policies that would ensure mobility of scientists, researchers and teachers. It is planned to develop special contracts and programs aimed at returning postdoctoral students. The idea of creating an open data Bank on the French scientific and academic community, including in the United States, to establish closer ties and establish cooperation between the communities of scientists and specialists is popular. There is also a clear need to address the lack of statistics on the exact number of French researchers, scientists and information on their further employment. The article shows why strengthening ties with French expatriates should be one of the priorities of the French foreign policy.

It is well known that the school subject “philosophy” has a long tradition in French high schools. However, there is – which is less well known – also a French tradition of didactics of philosophy. Unfortunately, didactical research in France has so far been published for the most part in French only. Since we see great potential in engaging with the didactical research done in France, we took the opportunity to invite one of the leading French researchers, Michel Tozzi, to publish a translation of his article Une approche par compétences en philosophie? (2011). In this introduction, we give a very brief historical overview about the development of the didactics of philosophy in France and then some information about Tozzi’s work.

found in parts of France, but also in non-French speaking areas (Francophone). French literature that developed outside of France occurred due to several factors, one of which was the colonization that occurred in the nineteenth century. This research would like to investigate myth in a poem, tittle Poème à mon frère blanc, written by Leopold Sedar Senghor. In this research, the researchers will not discuss the structure of the poem, but they are interested in the hidden meaning behind the poem. This research uses the theory of Roland Barthes to analyze the hidden meaning (myth) that the speaker wants to tell. The search for the hidden meaning (myth) is carried out, because the researchers understand, in a poem, what is written is not necessarily the true meaning. This research uses qualitative and descriptive methods with reading and understanding techniques.

In the geopolitical area of Eastern and Central Europe 20th century was a period of unwilling and un- planned migration of huge numbers of individuals, groups of people, societies or even whole nations, and the displace- ment of borders and states. Two destructive wars, two totalitarian systems fighting against each other forced millions of human beings to change the place of living. Especially the experience of the World War II settled the fate of many people in the region and caused several waves of political emigration. The author uses the term ‘old literature’ in broad sense, including also 19th century literary output, as for the big number of young researchers this period of history seems to be a very old one. Among the Polish refugees fleeing the country in various times and circumstances there were also politicians, soldiers, artist, writers, people of culture and scholars. The article presents and reminds of some Polish researchers of literature who had to change their country of living by political reasons, but did not abandon their research. The first group of emigrants formed those who left Poland short before or during the world war II. Some of them worked as professors at west European universities, an decided not to returned into the country occupied by Germans or emigrated with Polish Government, others get in Western Europe leaving Soviet Union with the Polish army formed by general Anders. They continued scholar work abroad and took part in formation of several new generations of researchers in Slavonic litera- ture. Another wave of emigration took place after the war, in late 40. and included mainly Polish citizens of Jewish origin who in spite of surviving the holocaust and returning home decided to leave Poland for fear of communism. A numerous emigration of Polish Jews was also provoked by communist government of Poland in march 1968. The author presents briefly the silhouettes of such scholars as Stanisław Kot, Wacław Lednicki, Józef Trypućko, Wiktor Weintraub, Jadwiga Maurer, Rachmiel Brandwajn and Jan Kott. The situation of 20th century Polish emigrants seems very similar to that of 19th and also represents the common experience of many Eastern and Central European countries and societies. Losing the homeland scholars of these countries also lost the close contact with their cultural roots, but on the other hand they gained a wider glance, distanced outlook of national literature and art and common platform of dialog and confrontation. Many times the foreign Universities, where they found the possibility to provide their research and meet the representative émigrés of other nations, became for them such places as Collège de France for Adam Mickiewicz and constitute the space where they all could meet together without mutual distrust and give lectures about Slavonic literature and culture for German, British of American students, inspiring them to pursue studies in Slavonic philology.

This paper reviews French concepts of fatigue syn dromes, with a special emphasis on a reputedly unique ly French diagnosis: spasmophilia. Neurasthenia has virtually no place in contemporary French nosology of fatigue states, and chronic fatigue syndrome has not been accepted by all French researchers. The contro versies on neurasthenia and spasmophilia illustrate some of the social uses of diagnostic categories (e.g., legitimation of symptoms) and the ambivalence of physicians toward diagnostic labels based on clinical criteria.

Following the I st congress in Besancon in 1992, the 2nd Japan-France Congress on Mechatronics was held at Takamatsu City in Japan from November 1 to 3, 1994. The congress was co-sponsored by Kagawa University, the Japan Society for Precision Engineering, and l'Institut des Microtechniques de Franche-Comte. A total of 282 persons participated in the congress, 49 from France, 209 from Japan, and 24 from other countries including China, U.S., Turkey, Korea, and Switzerland. Researchers and engineers from a total of 15 countries participated in the congress. The congress continues to become more international and exciting. There are six sessions at the congress. The session names and the number of the papers belonging to each are as follows: (1) Mechatronics, 33 papers; (2) Robotics, 53 papers; (3) Sensors, 26 papers; (4) Vision, 33 papers; (5) Microelectro Mechanical Systems, 20 papers; and (6) CIM & Systems, 21 papers. The total number of papers 186. Additionally, three keynote speakers discussed the current status and future of the mechatronics technologies. The papers were presented at the oral sessions and the poster sessions. In this special issue, 11 papers from these fields are presented to describe the current technological status in Japan. Takamatsu is charming old city near Osaka. The congress was held at the exhibition center in Intelligent Park in Takamatsu, which was newly developed as the technological center of the area. The congress was held at such a location so that participants from abroad could gain a feel for ordinary life in Japan. In addition to the congress, there were two technical tours before and after the congress. The technical tour to the industries in Takamatsu showed the vivid medium size manufacturers in Japan. It is the another viewpoint contrary to the huge companies of Japan. During the congress, there were warm and friendly technological interactions between Japan and Europe. This should be further encouraged, and more countries should be included in the congress. The 3rd French-Japanese Congress on Mechatronics will be held at Besancon, France in 1996. It will also be the first European-Asia Congress. I hope that many researchers and engineers from all over the world, will participate in the congress and that the warm and friendly atmosphere of the past congress is provided at the next congress.

The events of May 1968 in France are controversial both in public discussions and in the scientific literature. The article analyzes key publications in foreign literature devoted to the analysis of the conflict of narratives about the May protests in order to systematize the idea of a “conflict of memory”. The article demonstrates that already in 1968 one can see the lack of a common perception of the protests and the narratives about the May events differed significantly. The author analyzes key publications that investigate different sides of the problem of “narrative conflict”. The analysis of the works of R. Aron, K. Reeder, K. Ross, M. Seidman and K. Reynolds concludes that the publications problematize two dimensions of the conflict: the inconsistency of memory with reality and the contradiction between different memories of May. The author concludes that it is fundamentally impossible to find a consensus on the May events not only in public discourse, but also in the scientific literature.

Education researchers often cite a statement from Anatole France: "An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't." In this paper, we show how this statement can be transformed into an exact theorem.

The immediate post–Second World War period saw women gain equal political rights in a number of countries, including France and India. Political participation researchers began to consider women's involvement in politics. However, because they focused on state institutions and political parties as the most important sites of political participation, and because the presence of women within these sites was insignificant, the conclusions drawn were either that women were uninterested in and/or uninformed about politics or that their interest and knowledge derived from the male head of household. Moreover, when women's political participation was considered, the preferred location of study was the Western liberal democratic nation–state (Dogan, 1955; Duverger, 1955).

Purpose – This paper aims to deal with the issue of researchers’ responsibility for the dissemination of ideologies which have led to the cultural marginalisation and categorisation of minority social groups into a dominant/dominated relationship in France. One telling example is the way ethnic segmentation – as now used in marketing – finds its roots in the colonial paradigm. Design/methodology/approach – A critical and analytical review of the literature on ethnic marketing. Findings – The current paradigm which splits the world into centre and periphery or dominant and dominated, in the French context, is not the only existing one. In the framework of postcolonial studies, researchers in marketing now approach the ethnic market by being as close to consumers as possible and by adapting their methodology to the Consumer Culture Theory. Originality/value – Some researchers have become aware that the feeling of ethnic self-identification would not exist without the involvement of the dominant group who imposes their view on minorities. As to multicultural individuals, minorities have to adjust to a great variety of social situations by drawing from a set of available cultural identities. It is therefore more a question of multiple selves than ethnic identity. Multicultural individuals create their own identity and co-create new social categories from the grey area between dominant and dominated groups. The postcolonial approach raises the question as to whether ethnicity is a mere ideological construct with no underlying reality but the actual domination of minorities.

The article analyzes Ilya Ehrenbourg’s novel “The Fall of Paris&8j1; (1942) against the background of synchronic and diachronic cultural contexts. The author pays special attention to the mythologization of Paris from the middle of the 19th century and to the ideological consequences of the country’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The work reconstructs the system of Ehrenbourg’s “eschatological journalism&8j1; during the First World War and shows the connection of the writer’s novel with the cultural background of France “between two wars&8j1;. The novelist’s polemical dialogue with Jean Giraudoux on the Franco-German value-cultural collisions is demonstrated. It is concluded that for Ehrenbourg, as for a number of his Western brethren and recent researchers, the fall of Paris in 1940 was a sign of the end of the entire traditional West of Modern Times, and more specifically, the era of Modernism.

Abstract. An educational program focusing on seismological activities for school and university students that trains in observational sciences and raises citizen awareness of natural hazards has been active in France since 1995. Over this quarter century, different generations of students have learned various lessons concerning instrument installation, data recording, and analysis. These actions have led them into the field of scientific interrogation and interpretation, making them better prepared for our modern technological societies. We describe these student commitments that have been motivated by the installation of the first educational broadband seismometer in southern France. Analysis of regional earthquakes has generated a greater awareness of the seismic hazards where students live, while records of strong earthquakes all around the world have led to interaction between students, especially after the deployment of additional seismometers in schools. The natural extension of such an educational seismic network, first at the national level in France in 2006 and later in many countries through various collaborations, has enriched the pedagogical practices of teachers, increasing their skills in seismology and natural sciences among various other disciplines and complementing standard educational resources. We describe the necessary and sustainable relations between teachers and researchers over time. Combining students' motivation, teachers' experience and researchers' expertise has led to different hosting structures over the years. We conclude by presenting the feedback from a survey carried out in 2019 among all the teachers involved, highlighting the strong and weak points of such a long-term adventure. Recent integration into the official syllabus of the new Geosciences high school curricula in France illustrates the impact of such an exceptional experience.

In biology, last names have been used as proxy for genetic relatedness in pioneering studies of neutral theory and human migrations. More recently, analyzing the last name distribution of Italian academics has raised the suspicion of nepotism, with faculty hiring their relatives for academic posts. Here, we analyze three large datasets containing the last names of all academics in Italy, researchers from France, and those working at top public institutions in the United States. Through simple randomizations, we show that the US academic system is geographically well-mixed, whereas Italian academics tend to work in their native region. By contrasting maiden and married names, we can detect academic couples in France. Finally, we detect the signature of nepotism in the Italian system, with a declining trend. The claim that our tests detect nepotism as opposed to other effects is supported by the fact that we obtain different results for the researchers hired after 2010, when an antinepotism law was in effect.

Recent email exchange through INSNA listserv (Borgatti 1998) points to Hanifan as the first author to use explicitly the term 'social capital' in 1920. He saw it as an essential feature of social groups. Jacobs in 1961 and Hannerz in 1969 follow. Then we find more contemporary researchers such as Loury (1977), Coleman (1988), Fukuyama (1995) and Putnam (1995). They underscore the collective facet of social capital. It is an clement of the group culture, with a broad definition that entitles it to cover even entire societies, because it is closely related to trust and reciprocity norms among members.

This article introduces the special issue on ‘Islamophobia, Racialisation and the “Muslim Problem” in France’. Islamophobia is here understood as (anti-Muslim) racism, with structural and historical dimensions beyond those of individual acts of discrimination or prejudice, and whereby those perceived to be Muslim are systematically racialised as if they are ‘a race’ and as a ‘problem’ to be debated (primarily by the White non-Muslim majority). The issue brings together researchers from France and beyond, in French and in English, and from several disciplines, to demonstrate the diversity of international academic research on the topic as well as the relative consensus among specialist scholars on how to theorise and critique such phenomena.

Purpose – This paper aims to present a concise history of the main action research (AR) contribution in France. The authors discuss the role of AR in the organizational research field in general and compare it with intervention research (IR) and presented Institute of Socio-Economy of Enterprises and Organizations’s specific contributions and its presence on the international stage through review publications and wider works. Design/methodology/approach – A narrative approach was used to analyze this history. Findings – AR is considered as a research family. The authors define and compare AR with other qualitative methods. They analyze AR and IR principles, which include interaction with practitioners, negotiation with them, focusing in the third part on the case of ISEOR research team. Social implications – AR and IR permit to bridge the gap between researchers and practitioners, to develop useful research. At the same time, they permit to develop new researchers' competencies and to fund research, in a context of reduced public research funds. Originality/value – This article permits to understand the reality of what is and how to develop an IR, and the difficulties for researchers to insert them in the academic community, although France seems to be more permissive than others’ contexts. It permits also to better know the French IR and AR research in management.

During the past decade, political researchers have devoted growing attention to women's political involvement and, to a somewhat lesser extent, their political attitudes in Western cultures. This interest has been a response in part to contemporary feminist movements and, more specifically, to the increasingly visible role of women as social activists, partisan elites and governmental decision makers in Western European and North American society.

“Health psychology” is a newer sub-discipline whose research methodologies, theories, and practices were borrowed from diverse areas of psychology. It appeared later in France than in the United States or United Kingdom. In 1966, I adopted a perspective between anthropology and psycho-sociology of medicine. I never have self-identified as a “Health Psychologist”, continuing to work outside of disciplinary boundary constraints, but studied health questions moving first from psychology (and anthropology), through social psychology to sociology. By the 1980s, I adopted an even broader multi-disciplinary approach to health, as the HIV/AIDS epidemic urgently challenged health researchers/practitioners, in France and worldwide.

Among the modern researchers conducting studies on the 18th century, there is a widespread belief that research on Polish theatre of that era did not develop until the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. It is only part of the truth. The apogee of theatrical research coincided with those years, resulting from the 200th anniversary of the National Theatre, which was widely promoted by the authorities. However, the first diagnoses of Polish theatre scientists dealing with the 18th century are much earlier. Suffice it to recall Ludwik Bernacki’s monumental work, “Theatre, Drama and Music under Stanislaw August”, which the researcher published in Lviv in 1925. Bernacki’s research was closely related to the work of French theatre scientists, who conducted research on the scene and drama of the 18th century before the First World War. This article analyses and chronologically presents the last century of theatrical research and its methodological changes on the example of Polish and French history of 18th-century theatre.

This article presents recent initiatives in the fields of Digital Heritage and digital mapping by researchers attached the Centre d'études supérieures de la Renaissance (CESR) in Tours, France. During the fifteenth and early sixteenth century the city of Tours, situated in the heart of France in the valley of the river Loire, was one of the main residences of the French kings and this had important consequences for the nature of artistic production and for social aspects of urban life. Making use of the latest developments in Digital and Spatial Humanities, researchers attached to the CESR have created an interactive digital map of historical Tours; several crosslinked databases of artworks and archival sources from Tours; an enriched 3D model of an artistic masterpiece, the funeral monument of deceased royal children; an interactive historical graphic novel; and a GPS-led app with an historical guided tour of the city. These digital projects all have in common that they bring together the outcomes of scientific historical and art historical research with digital applications, as a starting point for further research, and for public outreach activities.
