Establishing the coupling between the different inelastic phenomena, usually appearing together during the cyclic loading history, is an open issue to be addressed. The Phd report is divided into two parts. The first part is focused on filled rubbers. The effects of pre-stretch and filler content on the history-dependent cyclic response of a representative carbon-filled synthetic rubber (SBR) are qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed by using the internal state variable theory. An interpretation of the underlying physical mechanisms is proposed in which two types of dissipative network rearrangements are considered, i.e. recoverable rearrangements inducing viscoelasticity and unrecoverable rearrangements inducing damage. In order to predict the main set of inelastic fatigue effects (fatigue-induced stress-softening and hysteresis along with dissipative heating), we formulate a new thermo-viscoelastic-damage constitutive model based on the internal state variable theory. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into a finite element program and numerical applications on rubber structures are performed. The predictive capabilities of the model are verified by comparisons with our experimental observations. The second part is focused on stretch-induced crystallizable rubbers. We develop a new micro-mechanism inspired molecular chain model to describe the progressive evolution of the crystallinity degree in rubbers and the history-dependent thermo-mechanical response within the context of the thermodynamic framework. In this model, the molecular configuration of the partially crystallized single chain is analyzed and calculated by means of some statistical mechanical methods. Our approach is implemented into the micro-sphere model in the aim to introduce the crystallization-induced anisotropy and dissipation. The proposed constitutive model is then used to discuss some important aspects of the micro-mechanism and the macro-response under the equilibrium state and the non-equilibrium state involved during stretching/recovery/continuous relaxation. The model simulations are also compared to experimental data at different stretch levels and temperatures. Local fields in terms of anisotropy and dissipation are presented on illustrative numerical examples

This PhD dissertation deals with the large-strain mechanical response of polyethylene. In a first part, experimental observations are reported on the time-dependent mechanical response of polyethylene materials containing a wide range of crystal fractions. In a second part, a large-strain viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model is developed to capture the progressive transition from thermoplastic-like to elastomeric-like mechanical response of polyethylene materials, as the crystal content changes. In order to identify the model parameters, an analytical deterministic scheme and a practical, “engineering-like”, numerical tool, based on a genetic algorithm are developed. In a third part, the proposed constitutive model is implemented into a finite element code and used to predict the response of multi-layered polyethylene specimens with different crystal fractions. Comparisons between the simulations and the experimental data (in terms of mechanical response and necking evolution) point out the model predictive capabilities

Geotechnical engineering is a crucial field in the design and construction of foundations, embankments, tunnels, and other structures interacting with soil and rock. However, the description of the elastoplastic response of soil, with preponderant non-linear and non-reversible deformations together with a non-associative flow rule, is complex. The difficulty is even higher in the case of non-monotonous loading paths where phenomenological constitutive relations require ad-hoc history parameters and advanced experimental tests for their calibration.Discrete element method has been proved to be an effective method in predicting quantitatively the constitutive response of soils, even in the case of complex loadings (with rotation of principal stress directions, or loading/unloading cycles) where conventional elastoplastic constitutive relations may fail to simulate realistic responses. For granular soils with a narrow grading, a direct representation of soil grains by polyhedral particles or with the level set method is possible, whereas for finer soils, or soils with a wider grading, alternative solutions should be considered. Spherical particles with enriched contact laws (e.g. by introducing rolling resistance at the contact) or rather simplified clumps of spheres can be used to keep the model relatively light to tackle further boundary value problems with limited computational cost. However, even if the models provide satisfying results for direct shear tests or drained triaxial compression loading paths compared to experimental measurements, their validation with respect to more complex loading paths as the isochoric compression or the path at constant stress deviator still present difficulties, in particular for initially loose granular assemblies.First, this study aims to compare such different approaches in terms of the prediction abilities at the macroscopic scale of the constitutive responses of soils, particularly for complex loading paths. Two kinds of discrete models are considered: (i) spherical particles with rolling resistance, (ii) simple clumps made of 2 to 6 spheres. The models are calibrated from two drained triaxial compressions on dense and loose Hostun sand. They are then assessed, according to the macroscopic response, on loading paths significantly different from the calibration loading paths (isochoric compressions, circular stress paths in the deviatoric plane, constant deviatoric stress path, etc.).Then, we investigate the importance of the description of the anisotropy of the initial fabric and of the inter-particle friction law in the simulated responses of loose granular assembly to different kinds of loading paths. It shows how the combination of both can modify importantly the simulated responses to some kinds of loading paths. This investigation is carried out for a numerical discrete model made of spheres by comparison with experimental results on sand. Finally, the model is used to simulate the nonlinear interaction between a shallow foundation of building structure and the supporting soil during strong seismic loadings, as tested experimentally for the TRISEE project with a full scale physical model. An adaptative discretization technique is implemented to limit the number of particles in such a boundary value problem and make the computation possible with a conventional desktop computer. Numerical results are benchmarked against experimental measurements from the TRISEE project, and FEM numerical simulations or macro-element models
Imamovic, Ismar. "Ultimate load limit analysis of steel structures accounting for nonlinear behaviour of connections." Thesis, Compiègne, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017COMP2373/document.
This thesis deals with the ultimate load limit analysis of steel frame structures. The steel frame structure has a very ductile response and a large potential to dissipate energy, which is crucial in the case of earthquakes. The ductility in the response of the structure comes from the behavior of the material itself and the behavior of the semi-rigid structural connections. The semi-rigid connections between beams and columns can significantly influence the response of the structure, sometimes up to 30%. In this thesis, we propose a methodology for modeling steel frame structures with included connection behavior. The idea is to model the behavior of the structural connections by the beam elements positioned in the corners of the steel frame structure. Other members of the steel frame structure, steel beams, and columns, will be modeled with nonlinear beam elements. This research consists of two parts. The first part deals with the behavior of the structural steel connections. In the second part, we present the development of the nonlinear beam element capable of representing the ductile behavior of steel structural elements, beams and columns. In the first part of the thesis, we define constitutive parameters identification procedure for the coupled plasticity-damage model with eighteen unknowns. This constitutive model is very robust and capable of representing a wide range of problems. The identification procedure was used in the preparation of experimental tests for three different types of structural steel connections. The experimental tests have been performed for two load cases. In the first, the load was applied in one direction with both the loading and unloading cycles. From the experimental measurements, we have concluded that the response of the experimental structure can be represented by the plasticity model only because no significant change in the elastic response throughout the loading program was observed. Therefore, we have chosen an elastoplastic geometrically exact beam to describe connection behavior. The hardening response of the beam is governed by bilinear law, and the softening response is governed by nonlinear exponential law. The identification of the parameters has been successfully done with fifteen unknown parameters identified. The two types of the experimental structures were also exposed to the cyclic loading. Measured experimental data shows complex connection behavior that cannot be described by the plasticity model alone. Namely, after changing load direction stiffness of the connection decreases. This suggests that the damage model should be incorporated in the constitutive law for the connections behavior as well. Therefore, we propose a new coupled plasticity-damage model capable of representing the loss in the stiffness of the connection with the changing of the load direction. At the end of this part, we also give the constitutive parameters identification for the proposed model. The second part of the thesis deals with the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of the elastoplastic geometrically exact beam. The hardening response of the beam includes interaction between stress resultant section forces (N, T and M), and the softening response of the beam, which is governed by the nonlinear law. This type of the beam element is capable of representing the ductile behavior of a steel frame structure, and it takes into account second order theory effects. Performed numerical simulations show that the proposed geometrically nonlinear beam element is very robust and is able to provide a more precise limit load analysis of steel frame structures. By using proposed methodology for modeling steel structures, we are able to obtain the real distribution of section forces, including their redistribution caused by forming of the hinges and the connections behavior

In the beginning and in general, I here propose a construction of the concept of autocensorship. In the sense in which I employ the term, however, the concept of auto-censorship cannot be grasped without the simultaneous elaboration of another concept, namely, the subject and the political subject in particular. Beginning with the notions of repression and sublimation in Freud before reconstituting the relations between body and world necessary for the transformation of the body into a subject, I propose an understanding of the strict relation between a historico-political subjectification (care of the self and asceticism in Michel Foucault) and an auto-censorship, that is to say, an auto-constitution of the subject in history by an endless symbolic interpretation of the human and a complex of technologies (knowledge or expertise, truths, powers). These technologies constitute the underpinning of responses that the subject, engaged in history, returns to itself in order to become a political subject

The intervertebral disc is probably the most extraordinary tissue that the nature produces, mainly for its unusual time-dependent properties strongly influenced by the biochemical environment and the applied mechanical loading. Establishing accurate structure-property relationships for intervertebral disc annulus fibrosus tissue is a fundamental task for a reliable computer simulation of the human spine. The difficulty emanates from the multi-axiality and the anisotropy of the tissue response along with regional dependency of a complex hierarchic structure interacting with the biochemical environment. In addition, the annulus fibrosus exhibits an unusual time-dependent transversal behavior for which a complete constitutive representation is not yet developed. A physically-based chemo-viscoelastic constitutive model that takes into account an accurate disc annulus structure in relation with the biochemical environment is proposed. Numerical models of annulus specimens and lumbar functional spinal units (one disc and the adjacent vertebrae) are designed while taking into consideration the interlamellar matrix connecting the fibers-reinforced lamellae. At the specimen scale, the model capabilities are verified by experimental comparisons under various conditions in terms of osmolarity, strain-rate and multi-axiality while considering the regional dependency. Our results highlight the determinant role of the interlamellar matrix in the disc multi-axial response. The different scenarios applied to lumbar units show encouraging multi-axial predictive capabilities of our approach making it a promising tool for human spine behavior long-term prediction including age-dependency
